Curiositas aka sirens!AU

in which Lando is a siren with species dysphoria and Oscar is the defintion of Just Some Guy, who happens to get caught up in Lando's mess. and obviously they fall in love along the way etc etc

I first posted about this idea over 2 months ago and I'm happy to announce that there is now a fic in the works!!! which will likely take at least another 2 months because goddamn the concept outgrew itself (as you can tell by the fact charles and max also, like, exist now) it's sitting at ~8k words rn, which is by far the longest thing I've ever written in my life already, but story isn't even close to being finished, so yeah it'll take a while lmao

for now though I have some character designs and lots of thoughts, which I'd like to share :3

ramblings about their individual designs and details below the cut!!

and massive thank you to my dear partner @lailau7904 for not only holding my hand through writing the fic so far but somehow being even more insane about this whole AU than I am???

LANDO

main character (and POV holder) his design isn't based on any real fish, closest resemblance is to a fake fishing lure (reference provided)

very little scarring despite sirens' hunting culture, some tiny cuts and scratches around the top of his tail from smuggling pretty stones and shards of glass

absurdly bright green scales (I really could've made him fluorescent but I think that would be overkill) which is absurdly shit for stealth purposes but good for catching the attention of potential victims

vague triangle shape language but in a semi-elegant way

doesn't eat fish and would rather not eat human either

MAX

fills the position of a leader in his and Lando's colony, inherited the role in his late teens but grew up to it pretty quickly

shark motif, all sharp and angular shapes, visibly intimidating

lots of scars collected during hunts, wounds covered over by red scales from Charles

his scales are pretty dark but they shine blue when the light hits them just right (plus Charles' scales are a bright red lmao, which is a bit suboptimal for stealth but he thinks it's worth it)

CHARLES

koi fish motif, soft and round shapes

no scarring at all

has known Max since they were kids but actually didn't meet Lando until their 20s despite Max and Lando being childhood best friends

considered legally dead by monegasque officials (this has lore reasons which I'm not about to spoil)

GENERAL NOTES

the AU plays in a modern setting, altough sirens are very behind on human technology

their gills are on the side of their ribs! they can also all breathe with their lungs above water

funky scales patterns on their torsos around "modified" areas such as their gills and back fin

they have no hands but don't let that fool you! I was simply too lazy to draw any, what you would see if I did draw them tho would include:

webbing between fingers!! matches the colour of fins

longer, and more solid, claw-like nails

wrinkled palms and fingertips

I really wanted to make Max and Charles' torsos more life accurate but could not be arsed, they all have Lando's body type, aka I've accidentally twinkified Charles and Max lmao

by now you might have noticed that there's no design for Oscar, and as much as I really want to make a siren design for him that would have some pretty heavy lore implications so I'm... hesitant to do so

all throughout writing and drawing I couldn't help but think about another banger siren!Lando fic: Salt Skin by @strawberry-daiquiris! in which Lando has orange slash papaya scales, which I just had to draw honestly

a lot of my design process was also inspired by a piece by @dumbf1sketches (it's somewhere in the pile of other gorgeous art in that post)

Reading SVSSS: Chapter 9

For those who don't know, I am reading SVSSS for the first time and sharing my thoughts!

Jesus christ. the fact that in this moment SQQ hates Sha Hualing's nails- not because there is a kid about to get slice and diced, but because in the novel she uses them to tear up Luo BInghe's back when they fuck. I cannot with this man *face palm* p187

learning about how Luo Binghe's cultivation works with his need to basically dual cultivate to level himself out has me officially believing that the system basically allowed SQQ to build the ideal body for Luo Binghe. he definitely has the excess spiritual power LOL p190

This interaction with Sha Hualing and Liu Mingyan tho...I really love Liu Mingyan! Wait- oh no! Not her clawing her face!!! p194

This was definitely a needed pick up after we had that wretched death. But now I am so curious! I need to know how this turns into their weird but epic love story. When do these two collide??? What happens next???? (do not answer any of these questions LOL no spoilers, but I am very excited to read on).

I'm so tired of people roping Oscar Isaac into these overrated actor discussions just because he's a really popular actor rn. You could edit that man into Goncharov 1973 and it would be seamless. The vibes? Immaculate. The face? Just right. The acting? Exactly what we need. Florence Pugh is a charismatic and skilled actress but her face and mannerisms are simply too modern. Timothee has his use, but unless there's a young adult twink who writes poetry that I forgot about (NOT Andrey!!! Tumblr twinkifying that man is the worst thing to happen to this movie. "pre-canon" ok learn how to care about characters past the age of 25 please!!) I don't want to hear it. I'm still gonna go see it tho

no absolutely and that's why I didn't say anything against his casting & focused on Chalamet & Pugh instead. I actually kind of wish they'd go for more unknown actors in the casting in general, but that aside, couldn't agree more with everything you say here...including the "i'm still gonna go see it tho" like 😂 Goncharov remake? of course i'm there with bells on.

re: the evan discussion and specifically how you mentioned how good and chill the fandom writes him; its so infuriating to watch people woobify the murderous capitalist and see the sympathetic (of course, as you said, POC and women) characters paid dust or straight up turned evil, and its so good to see someone finally speak on it. though, i do remember before the archives (like 2016-17 DBD), his backstory was retconned like 3 times. maybe thats the reason for the discrepancy in how hes seen?

Yeah, I really feel you anon. I’m glad you were able to find some commiseration with me. It’s like, I still would still hate it on principle, but it wouldn’t be so grating to me if just either like everyone got the same treatment, or it was less wide spread, but it is so tiring and not fun to see the rich white estate owner sadistic serial killer get woobified or a weird blanket pass very constantly while at the same time like, actually never did a thing wrong Lisa Sherwood is sitting covered in cobwebs in the corner full of pre-existing potential no one is making bank on. 

According to a buddy of mine, it’s largely due to a fic that got popular that wrote him that way? But I know little of the old Trapper retcons so that could be a thing too. I’m like, a medium-old dbd fan, lol, I wasn’t here since the beginning, but I’ve been here a while now. Retcons and off the cuff comments made by disagreeing devs have def been behind wildly different takes before, although some heckn weird stuff like Entity Ace just seems to come out of the pitch black ether itself. (Also leave my boy Ace alone TuT he never did a thing wrong. Well. P much lol.) Sometimes huge things really can start with like, one joke a person tells, so who even knows with a lot of fan stuff. 

There are a lot of things like this that do grate on me though. Like for real, I know I’ve said this before, but uh, not super chill that when the OG fandom decided to arbitrarily assign an OG killer to ship with an OG survivor, Claudette Morel got the deformed & feral one? (& Jake just got no one back then. Didn’t even get Sally, when she was added 4th. We can all do that character math ourselves pretty easy I think, and it’s. Yeah.) To this day, it’s still one of the biggest and only ships for her that get any attention, despite her being an OG and a wildly popular character. Nothing against Max, I like him and am very sympathetic to his backstory and actually would enjoy writing him more, but that’s still not super chill. (Also poor heckn Max. He gets so infantilized in portrayals often, as if his disabilities give him the mind of a child? which is still one of the biggest stereotypes for disabled people in media. : / ).  And like, my good boy Joey has so much potential as a character, but appears in anything like maybe 1/20th as much as Frank (I like Frank, just where’s the justice in those #s?), and tho he’s chiller/nicer & like 2 or more years younger than Frank in canon, when he does get time, tends to get treated as more aggressive by far than his OG portrayal, while Frank often is jokey/light or woobified or twinkified. Joey also usually gets drawn super jacked and taller/bigger than his model, when he’s pretty close to the exact same size Frank is, and uh, neither of those trait interpretations alone but especially both together are not super chill. 

Side note to end on bc this makes it sound like all I do is stare at the parts of this fandom that annoy me, I get fired up, but I wouldn’t be here if that was true. There’s so much amazing stuff here too. And like, man, I really love and appreciate it when I see artists and writers and fans portraying or even just having a great/passionate time talking about the characters, who aren’t like that. Which does happen. A lot. With maybe not as many people, but I’ve been lucky enough to find some super cool ones on here and in other places. It’s such a breath of fresh air and always makes me feel really good after. : ) (Also like shoutout to people who loved Julie pre-archives-spotlight? Bc she mostly was totally ignored, and I was always so happy when I saw somone who was like “This is not fair” and loved her so she wasn’t forgotten.) I’ve seen some really great work and follow some amazing dbd blogs I have and will keep on appreciating so much. If you’re reading this, whenever amount later doesn’t matter, and you make dbd stuff--not just like artistic content but including just gushy posts about characters you like and have fun going off about thoughts and feelings too--for one of the more forgotten female/disabled/poc list, I appreciate you. They deserve it. You’re doin’ the lord’s work. It’s a very happy thing to see. <3

This has been a thing some people were thinking about since season 4 is coming out, what do you think of the updated style for the anime? It's a interesting because I'm loving half the characters while preferring the older styles for the other. But Furudate's a good artist (I especially appreciate the way they draw the girls in the series as they kind of just look like real people) so making it match closer to the manga isn't objectively bad. But what do you think? (They look squishier to me)

I think it’s normal to have different opinions on it since it’s a matter of personal tastes and as such very personal. There’s no right or wrong take on this. 

Personally, I definitely think they made the new season designs look... cuter...? if that makes sense? Idk, I immediately noticed the difference with Tadashi. He definitely looks... softer and rounder. It’s not a bad look on him. I don’t particularly think that the animators tried to match this new style more to Furudate’s, because Furudate has a pretty distinct way of drawing jaws in particular... He always uses squares as basic shapes instead of circles. It’s kinda noticeable. The anime tho makes everyone look... less sharp, in a way. 

Tho from the character design sheets that came out earlier this year, I did notice that the anime team significantly de-twinkified Bokuto and gave him a body shape that matches more that of his manga counterpart. That was definitely appreciated. 

I haven’t really paid that much attention to the new designs tho (and I’m not an artist so I don’t really pick up on this kind of details unless they’re... super in your face lmao). So idk what all the changes are. But I don’t dislike this new style, tho I also agree that some characters looked better how they were originally drawn, and others look better now. I’ll get used to it soon enough, I’m sure
