A Weighty Responsibility
14 And the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying, 15 “List the sons of Levi, by fathers’ houses and by clans; every male from a month old and upward you shall list.” 16 So Moses listed them according to the word of the Lord, as he was commanded. 17 And these were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon and Kohath and Merari. 18 And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by…

by the merit of me being the youngest and only one who hasnt had serious partner yet, my mom’s dreams for my future husband have gotten more obscure and impractical. obviously we got the basics of her hoping i marry a jewish guy. okay thats a normal hope for a jewish mother i guess. the other week she was saying i should marry someone with colored eyes so our children will have colored eyes. i was like well mother that is very odd and lowkey problematic and also i think the majority of jewish people have brown eyes so you’re honestly quite limiting the pool here. today she was (jokingly…i hope) saying i should only marry a cohen or levi so our children will have an affiliation, ideally a cohen for elevating their status. I was like well it is in fact the year 2024 and i dont think anyone on the entire earth will consider the ancient jewish priestly classes in the status of my children, but i’ll keep that in mind👍🏼.
#like ok she is joking but also#i honestly think she is completely serious about wanting my children to be cohanim or leviites#like she wouldnt want that to determine my spouse but she is the only person i have ever met who is sensitive about not being one#(tribe is carried patrilinearly so while im a levi it would depend on who i marry)#she recently found out that her ancestors were levis but lost it when female ancestor married a guy and i think my mom is so bitter about i#but its just like. absolutely does not matter and has not for many thousand years#growing up she wld always be like ‘its so great you kids are levis…im from the lost tribe’ so lowkey she might be serious

world building idea:
The origin story for a certain land involves siblings who founded the first kingdom together but then disagreed and broke up, and their descendants are separate peoples/kingdoms/factions now. Except there was another sibling who just wanted them to get along, and that sibling's descendants are forever recognized among both peoples as neutral. They have no place of their own but instead wander among the other kingdoms/factions. None are refused a safe place for the night or passage through a town, and though some take advantage of this or resent the loneliness that comes with not having a home of one's own, the majority continue their ancestor's legacy of peacekeeping and healing.

A Plea for Life

O LORD God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before Thee: Let my prayer come before Thee: incline Thine ear unto my cry; For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave. פריחת השקד 🌸
Almond blossoms 🌸
Took a lot of inspo from Alphonse Mucha for the framing!
Some cool Jewish almond facts:
Almonds (Shaked/שקד) signify zeal, speed, and faithfulness.
Almond trees are the first to bloom in Israel, which is why Chazal decided that that time would be the new year for trees (Tu B’Shvat).
Yirmiyahu is shown an almond tree as a sign that ה׳ carried out his word.
The cups of the menorah were shaped like almonds.
When Aharons position as Cohen Gadol was challenged, ה׳ ordered that each tribe took a staff with their name engraved in it and whichever staff bloomed signified the choice of ה׳. Aharons staff (levi) blossomed with ripe almonds! The staff was kept in the beit Hamikdash with a sample of Mahn and stayed in bloom for centuries!

Responsible for the Holiness of a Nation
40 And the Lord said to Moses, “List all the firstborn males of the people of Israel, from a month old and upward, taking the number of their names. 41 And you shall take the Levites for me—I am the Lord—instead of all the firstborn among the people of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the cattle of the people of Israel.” 42 So Moses listed all the firstborn…

Happy Hanukkah! Hope you're doing well
Would you say being a zionist or supporting zionism is "picking a side" in the war? Sorry if it's a silly question, but I've noticed a lot of Palestinian or people related to palestinians on this site are understandably antizionist, even when they aren't antisemitic. I've been told I'm being somewhat hypocritical by claiming to be neutral and supporting zionism(which btw i only meant in a non-extremist way) . So I just wanna clear it up, bc I am against Israel's actions too.
I would say it's complicated. Zionism itself must be defined before you can say you do or do not agree with that term as applied to you. So, in general, Zionism is very broad. Quite simply it boils down to the recognition of Jews as the indigenous people of Israel and the right of said people to self-determine in their communities within their native land.
With regard to the war, I actually do not view Zionism as taking a side for or against Palestinian self-determination, freedom and dignity. I am a Zionist because I am a Jew, a part of the indigenous tribe of people connected for thousands of years to this land and this place.
But I acknowledge that whilst Palestinians are a recent identity and whilst they didn't undergo ethnogenesis in Israel, they've lived there for a long time and it's silly to expect that they wouldn't consider it their homeland as well. And I support that, I think that's OK -- IF it's not being levied as a supercessionist attempt to claim Arabs are the real indigenous peoples of Israel and Jews are just European invaders.
But Palestinians are our neighbors, for better and for worse. And we must find a way to coexist and live in peace, because we want an ally by our side, not an enemy at the gates. And unfortunately, our conduct has been veering hard from the precepts that tie our people together since we accepted the Torah at Sinai.
Yes, "El" was originally the "God of Banners." There is a lot of rhetoric in the Torah that approves of "crushing your enemies." But, as a people, as we moved toward Rabbinic Judaism, we must follow the lead of our forefathers and shed the harmful impetus of vengeance. There are also many verses in the Torah that promote compassion and good-will even toward an enemy.
I don't view Palestinians as my enemy. I view them as my neighbors. And I want to be a good citizen and advocate for prosperity and wellbeing for all who live in and around Israel, Gaza and the West Bank, and indeed in every place on Earth.
There is plenty of room within the confines of Zionism to condemn the actions of the Israeli government. Zionism does not mean that we unconditionally support the government. Zionism is about all of us Jews, as a whole entire people. So bad actors like Netanyahu are fundamentally acting against the interests of Zionists and Jews everywhere by causing harm and suffering where it is not warranted.
And that, along with forced military conscription in general, is a searing wound that has been inflicted on us and continues to be inflicted. And we are feeling those reverberations. It's spiritually harmful. (And chag sameach to you and yours!!! Happy Honk!)

okay this is a bit of a random question, and please feel free to ignore it for whatever reason! and please forgive any clumsy wording, i promise i'm asking just from curiosity and without any malice.
i know in jewish culture the mother is the one who sort of 'transfers jewishness' to the children, so i was wondering what would happen if a jewish trans man had a baby? would the kids be considered jewish or, because he's a father, would it be different?
lastly, i just wanted to thank you for all of your posts. i learn so much from you, and it always makes me smile when i see one of your art or tree posts!
What a great ask!!!! Thank you so much for your kind words!!!! It makes the stressful parts worth it. 😊🩵🩵
So, first off, I’m no rabbi or even a religious scholar. I’m just a Jew who likes being a Jew.
But here is my take that other Jews are free to add onto or provide sources on.
But there is no Jewish High Authority. There’s no, like, Jewish pope to sit around and let Jews know they’ve Done Jewish Wrong. Judaism is a cultural of mutual acceptance based on the totality of shared cultural wisdom and understanding.
So, a person cannot just decide “I’m Jewish now” and be Jewish. Jews as a community must accept them into our tribe after they’ve demonstrated an understanding of and commitment to our broad understanding of life. Jews also don’t have sects. We have different branches or streams of belief ranging from humanist to ultraorthadox, but we are all equally Jewish. We don’t even all believe in G-d. Our core values revolve around how we treat one another and are nuanced, which is why becoming a Jew is a process.
With that in mind, with the exception of a few very strictly outlier cases, matrilineal passage of religion is more of a guideline than a hard and fast rule.
I could be wrong as it’s been awhile since I learned this and may have some details mixed up, but I believe that the matrilineal passage of culture was partially instituted due to the frequent rape of Jewish women. As a community, we consider a child born to a Jewish woman to be as much a part of our community as any other member of our community, regardless of who fathered that child. Likewise, we take communal responsibility and cultural claim to that child. Someone cannot rape a Jewish woman and the take her child from her to be raised as non-Jewish that is an affront to us.
Other reasons I’ve heard for why Jews pass religion through mothers is due to equality. Matrilineal passage of culture is only one part of passing Judaism across generations. Jews get the religion from their mother and their tribe from their father. There used to be 12 tribes named after all of Jacob’s sons. But those were mostly scattered/lost over persecution and diaspora. Now there are only three (depending on how you break it down. It gets complicated LOL): Yisrael, Levi, and Cohen. Most Jews are tribe of Yisrael. I am tribe of Yisrael because my father is tribe of Yisrael. When you convert to Judaism you also become tribe of Yisrael. My mother is a Levite (tribe of Levi) because her father was a Levite. Historically, Levites played an important role in the Old Temple in Jerusalem as well as other culturally distinct duties ranging from everything from maintaining the temple itself, education of the Jewish community, singing in the old temple, serving as judges, and serving as guards of the temple. In diaspora and in times of strife in the biblical era, Levites also helped keep Jewish communities together and safe.
The remaining tribe is Kohanim. This group is believed to be directly descended from Aaron, Moses’s brother and therefore descended from all the priests of the temple in the biblical era.
It is possible that the Levites and Kohanim were able to maintain their tribal lineage patrilineally due to their status as leaders in early diaspora and therefore being able to maintain their roles in diasporic Jewish communities longer. I simply don’t know. But I do know that the culture is what mothers traditionally pass down and the duties and history of the tribe is passed down via the fathers. When both parents are Jewish, what matters is that each parent passes an important aspect of cultural identity on to their children.
But none of this is compulsory or set in stone.
And I will again say that my understanding of it all may be fundamentally flawed in some way, because of how unimportant it is to me personally. I mean, I think it’s cool that my mom can trace our lineage back so far. And even some DNA tests done several years ago have confirmed that my mom is descended from an actual Talmudic scholar which is fun to know. I think it’s cool that my ancestors were biblical nerds and judges and that my grandfather was a lawyer and that my skill that benefits the Jewish community during times of strife in diaspora seems to be education and outreach. I like that I personally seem to excel at issues related to judgment and education and community cohesion, because it is so in line with the history of my ancestors as determined by cultural norms as well as DNA. It also makes me sad that diaspora has taken away some of that cultural heritage from other Jewish tribes.
But it doesn’t actually have anything to do with how Jewish we are OR how important or valid we are to or within the Jewish community. These are rules/guidelines that were developed with the goal of maintaining identity and culture despite immense hardship. These are rules/guidelines meant to strengthen our community. But they were never (as far as I understand it all) meant to EXCLUDE anyone.
And here’s the thing: a slang way Jews have of referring to one another is as “members of the tribe.” Because beyond Yisrael or Levi or Kohen, we are all JEWS. We are all a member of the same tribe, and that tribe is Judaism.
Is the trans man Jewish? Have he and his partner (if he chooses to have a partner) agreed to raise their child Jewish? Then congratulations to them and their Jewish baby!!!
If one parent is a Levite or a Kohen and the other is another tribe, I’ll let them and rabbi decide how to sort that out. But even then it wouldn’t likely be viewed as a matter of contention but more as a fun Talmudic riddle to explore.
TL;DR: Patrilineal Jews are just as Jewish as any other Jew. And trans men are men. Beyond that, everything else is Talmudic nuanced debate.

Is the site https://hebrewnations.com/ actually Jewish?
It’s giving me weird vibes.
(My jumblr is @tzipporahs-well.)
Rating: Not Jewish (and also extremely racist and bonkers)
You are right about the weird vibes, it is in the category of what we would call "Biblical pseudoscience". Hebrewnations.com is an offshoot of Brit-Am, an organization headed by Yair Davidiy. The sole mission of Brit-Am is to "prove" that different nations and ethnic groups around the world are actually part of the lost Ten Tribes, which also involves greatly misinterpreting other Indigineous groups' beliefs and origins. On his LinkedIn, Yair Davidiy lists absolutely no qualifications- he calls himself a Rabbi, and yet no Rabbinical school is listed. He calls himself an expert in biblical archaeology, and yet no program is listed, not even a BS or BA.
Yair Davidiy can also be found on Atlantipedia, a pseudoscience website that promotes archaeologicial misinformation, and that's a damning enough fact.
Among his many outlandish claims, Yair Davidiy identifies the French as the tribe of Reuven, the Celts as Shimon, the Italians as Levi (nevermind that Levites are still around today), the Finns as Yissachar, Holland as Zevulun, the Goths as Dan, the Norwegians as Naftali, the Swedes as Gad, the Vandals as Asher, the Scythians as Yosef, and the Normans as Binyamin. (Nevermind that Binyamin was not included in the lost Ten Tribes).
Davidiy also claims that Mashiach ben Yosef will actually be found among the Anglo-Saxons, which he uses interchangably with white USAmericans.
He claims:
There will be a future re-union of Judah and Joseph. Neither the MALBIM nor Rabbi Schneerson were consciously aware that JOSEPH is to be identified with the "Anglo-Saxon" related peoples, i.e. the British, North Americans, and their "colonial" cousins. Nevertheless, their description of the relationship between Judah and Joseph finds some parallels in recent times with that between the Jews and the "Anglo-Saxon" nations. As pointed out in our book “Ephraim” (1995, 2001), the "Anglo-Saxon" nations are really the only cultural-ethnic bloc that is capable (barring supernatural miracles) of physically fulfilling the role ascribed to "Joseph" in Jewish sources. They are the only ones capable of defeating the combined forces of Edom (Germany and Europe) and Ishmael (the Moslem peoples) in armed confrontation. They are also the only ones who unto now have actively assisted the Jews in settling the Land of Israel. They have taken this task upon themselves almost as part of an obligation springing from their own national heritage. This point holds true despite mistaken and negative stands often taken by certain politicians and national leaders in America and Britain against the Jewish-Israelis. There are some bad Israelites, some bad Jews, and some bad people of other origins in Israelite nations. The "Anglo-Saxon" nations in the past have proved themselves capable of successfully organizing the orderly and secure mass movement of their own peoples in settling them overseas, in new countries. Eventually a re-union between Joseph and Judah will take place. The sooner the better.
Essentially, he has created a pseudo-religion of his own, based in American exceptionalism. He has also allied himself with the American Evangelical Christians who only support Israel because they believe it will bring about the end of times that will purge any non-Christian from the earth (including Jews). He also frequently uses the (Christian) King James Bible translation of the 'Old Testament', which is of course concerning for someone who claims to promote Jewish ideas.
The only good thing is that he doesn't seem to have much of a following.
So, as far as we know, Yair Davidiy is a Jew, but his organization and ideas most certainly are not.

[[WANTED]]
[[MAKHALI DOTHARL]]
<<Exiled from the Khatayin tribe following the accidental death of her eldest brother during a pilgrimage to The Crooked Coin, Makhali was adopted by the Dotharl shortly before leaving the Steppe for good. Living amongst their numbers, her natural predisposition for combat only grew stronger, her anger at the injustice levied upon her magnified by peers more entranced by the brilliant flash of violent revenge than its reasoning or outcome. Still unable to face what remains of her family, she wanders Eorzea wholly according to her whims, rarely completely sober and always looking for a fight. When asked during murder investigations by the Adders, or the Maelstrom, or the Immortal Flames, witnesses always say the same thing:
[[5,000,000 GIL REWARD | DEAD OR ALIVE ]]
[CHARGED WITH: MURDER, MANSLAUGHTER, ASSAULT, PUBLIC INTOXICATION, VANDALISM
EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. DO NOT APPROACH ALONE.]
"it wasn't like the guy didn't have it coming, but even he didn't deserve that.">>
