one of the things i love most about arc 2, i think, is the breaking down of "this action is always bad" from arc 1 into "this action is always circumstantial" in arc 2. not that arc 1 is devoid of morality complexity and ambiguity, but there's definitely more examinations of said things and said unforeseen consequences in arc 2.

in arc 1, Claudia doesn't break away from her father (isn't familial morality good?) and Rayla does (becoming the first real traitor in the series in a lot of ways). In arc 1, Nyx is our primary (bad) thief who steals for self-centred (monetary) reasons, but in S5 we see both Ezran and Rayla engage in thievery with good intentions, even if for Rayla it is also for 'monetary' reasons (ha!) and Callum spares/helps her much the way Rayla spared/helped Nyx, even after being 'tricked' and certainly lied to. Nyx's thievery has the least consequence with Ezran's having the most, but their intentions (to return a baby creature for money / to save baby creatures from a truly terrible fate and existence) is what divvies up the actions accordingly.

Soren and Terry are both crestfallen and wracked with guilt upon killing someone - for Soren, his father, which is extra complicated given that Viren clearly paid quite a steep price to keep his son alive; for Terry, a relative stranger - but both murders affect them in similar ways. For Terry, it was something he'd never been trained to do and wholly in defense of someone he loves; for Soren, it was fulfilling his purpose as a knight and a crownguard for someone he loves, but also reflective of the strength it took to stand up against his father for what was right.

When Callum breaks away from Aaravos in future seasons, he will be retreading Viren's path in 5x09. Claudia and Rayla continue to parallel each other quite strongly, particularly with 6x01 in mind. Callum, like Viren and Claudia, has used dark magic two times now for Good reasons, yet is clearly still worried by what path it may set him on, while Viren is forced to recognize his own agency (much like Callum did in S2).

IDK if this makes sense but I really like the way TDP takes intention, circumstance, and consequence into account, and doesn't let any character off the hook for their choices within those circumstances, but also doesn't demonize any of them for their choices either

This image pretty much confirms that we will be seeing the gang visit the Starscraper in Season 6. It makes sense since they most likely need star magic to free Rayla’s family (because the coins have a symbol associated with star magic on them).

My friend @not-an-actual-attack-helicopter pointed out that perhaps when they said “explosive start” they meant it literally. Maybe Book 6 will start with Aaravos exploding out of his prison.

As for this “new startouch elf”, I am guessing it’s the Merciful One. Or Leola…….or Laurelion……..or someone else entirely but probably one of those.

Going by the number of asks they got, it would seem like some people outside of that discord had something to say, but it would not surprise me if some of the 4 incredibly entitled rude/wrong anons came from y'all, who all wanna act like liking Aaravos makes you somehow oppressed compared to rayllum shippers like what the Fuck (he's always been popular, any tdp merch at cons is of Aaravos, he just isn't a protag, whatever), and then for y'all to gang up on someone on anon is like. Really.

Yesterday and seeing what came out of it sucked for me because now I don't think I can trust/want to be around the main Aaravos corner anymore when you have people saying shit like this on anon to someone they have no relationship to and about a post y'all 1. took the wrong way and 2. wasn't even in the fandom tags

See now that's a valid and good question. Unfortunately, I am definatelllllly not the one to answer that. I think that's the only TDP post I've reblogged. I don't actually follow that fandom/series (hence the 'I don't go here') BUT several of the people I follow do! So - from what I glean from what's come across my dash recently - the gifs in that set are from a trailer for season four that was released at.... Comicon, I think? So season 4 isn't out yet but they've announced its soon-to-be-release I'm guessing? I'm not sure if they put down a solid date yet but dash chatter indicates its upcoming. Sorry I can't be more help; I just support the dark/light haired girl's grabby hands.

prologue - part 1

“Ah y/n, there you are. Did you get the message to Viper?” Lightning Bolt Zolt asked you as you entered their hideout. You nodded, you’d been recruited by the triad a couple of days after the incident that resulted in your parents death which had been at least a year ago. They were surprisingly welcoming and the leader had taken a small liking to you but he’d never say that out loud. You had sworn your allegiance to the Triple Threats meaning you got full protection from the triad, a place to live and even bending instructors. 

The current hideout where you lived was situated under an earth kingdom inspired bar and was dimly lit by a couple of lamps hanging from the ceiling that shone a light in a small circle. The rest of the room was lit by candles that firebenders turned on and off. One of the black lamps sat right on top of a table where elder members gambled and played cards, it illuminated the table just enough for the people that played but barely affected the younger members around who were oh so desperately trying to see what was going on.

Near the back of the room that you first saw as you came down the stairs was a small bar counter where the majority of the alcohol and food sat. Lightning Bolt Zolt also had a velvet seat in front of said counter where he had a clear view of the entire common room. A lamp also hung above the bar counter but he had a couple of candles lit around him in order to seem more menacing.

Once you came down the stairs from the staff room of the bar, a couple of steps into the common room, there was a corridor that lead to a few rooms that only the higher ranked members could use but they had given you the smallest one in order to keep you safe as well as keep an eye on you. The senior members weren’t always there, they sometimes switched from hideout to hideout or lived in their own houses but always had a room in the basement in case they needed to hide from the cops or lay low for a while. Someone in the higher ranks was always on thin ice with the law so you usually had someone like Zolt, Zhen or even Shady Shin sleeping in a room across from you.

“Wanna take a go at firebending?” The leader asked before you exited the room. They were aware of your bending abilities but had noticed that you seemed very reluctant to even use your gift. They usually had a strict bending only policy but they made an exception for you as you were great at relaying messages between members, deep down though, they hoped you’d start firebending again because you showed so much promise in your hand to hand combat training.Occasionally puffs of fire would come out when you really got into your sparring sessions but refused to make anymore than that.

Much to Zolt’s dismay you shook your head. With a sigh, Zolt grabbed an apple that had been freshly bought that sat on the bar counter and extended it to you with a small smile. “No problem, remember Zhen is always available for more hand to hand combat. Isn't that right Zhen?” Zolt turned his head to make eye contact with the older member who nodded slightly before returning to his card game.

You shook your head but gladly took the apple out of his hand, only realising then that you hadn’t eaten since that small bowl of rice you had for breakfast. He excused you with a curt nod. You took that as your cue to leave the room infested with the criminals that had served as your family for the past year and head to the privacy of your room. Your room was quite small, just big enough for a bed and a small sort of hopper widow that gave you a small view of the bustling streets of Republic city. Thousands of people walked by you and the bar everyday and had no idea that the eldest triad were hidden there. You adored people watching even though you could barely see people’s feet. Next to your bed was a small bedside table with a candle that had been turned on by some firebender while you were gone. You only had a select choice of clothing notably three pairs of red pants to honour your fire nation heritage, two plain shirts, a white tank top and a beautiful blue dress that Shady Shin had gotten for your birthday not too long ago so you’d have something fancy in case you ever needed one. A few female members had promised to take you on shopping sprees when you got older so you’d blend in better as you grew. 

You also had a small stack of books that meant the world to you near your bed. They were your parent’s and one of them was your favorite book of Fire Nation legends and you reread whenever you missed them. You had no idea what you’d do if you lost it and you could never buy it again as your mother had even written little notes in it and doodled in it, she had even included a family picture. She had planned on keeping the book when you grew out of it so she could give it to you as a 16th birthday present but unfortunately, that’ll never happen.

An hour or so after you had finished your apple, Zolt called for you. His voice carried all the way to your room so you jumped up and quickly made your way to the common room. You noticed that the majority of the newer members had left and only select senior members like Zhen were still gambling. You made it to the leader’s side when you finally noticed that Shady Shin stood in front of the lightning bender with two boys next to him. One looked to be around your age, you would’ve guessed 14 at the most. He had jet black unkempt hair and sharp tangerine eyes, making you believe that he must’ve had some sort of fire nation heritage. The boy next to him was shorter and looked 10, maybe 11 and looked way too innocent to be anywhere near a triad but then again, so did you. The younger one had similar black hair but instead had green puppy eyes.

“Meet your new teammates, they’ll be living on and off around here but we’ll mostly help you with messages and accounting.” Zolt introduced them, extending a hand to show the two brothers. “Now y/n darling, why don't you give them a small tour of the place while I talk with Shady Shin over here.”

You nodded and indicated the brothers to follow you down a hallway opposite to the stairs as opposed to the rooms that lay adjacent to them.

‘I’m y/n, what about you two?” You asked as soon as Shady Shin and Zolt were out of ear shot. Whenever Zolt asked you to not listen to a conversation you obeyed, he was still after all a powerful and dangerous man. The taller boy spoke for the both of them.

“I’m Mako and this is my brother Bolin.”

Now, this would be really really fun because of the whole father-daughter thing in ToA this time around instead of master-servant turned friendship/siblinghood and it would probably be ten times angstier because Meg can't get Claimed “officially” until Apollo becomes a god again… and if he completely forgets fathering her like with Georgina, it would be so effing angsty it would make Melpomene sob.

Meg would probably have one of those powers perceived to be “rare” among Apollo kids - according to the fandom, lightbending, plague, etc. And guess what? That would be really really fun if she is the one to control the nosoi in THO… very fun indeed. And if she escaped the guards in TDP by making a flash of light to temporarily blind them and then making her escape- also foreshadowing the Apollo-Commodus showdown at the end of the book-

Idk if this is asking to much but can you give quick thoughts on each of the headcanons tdp dropped on reddit? I love your analysis and opinions on the matter so much!

Well, I screenshotted all these thinking I’d use them eventually, but… sure, since I’ve made this so easy for myself, here you go.

I just did a theory post on this one about primal stones. Also Viren didn’t make his Sky primal stone. Ibis has one in his staff, and so does the Moonshadow elf from the intro. I’m guessing there’s one cool staff for each elven race, and its leader/most powerful mage controls it.

This one reaffirms that dark magic is complicated, but that it can accomplish good things with bad means. Which we been knew, but it’s always good to be reminded that everything has a cost, even good things.

Elven language comes in different forms that descend form a mother tongue, but it has a Common tongue, too, and the writing is all similar enough that elves can generally read each others’ languages. This is probably to do with why Ethari’s forge sleeves and Janai’s sheath have the same heat-protection rune on them, but in very different script. One is Sunfire script and the other is Moonshadow script. Headcanon confirmed!

Annika and Neha seem to be Aanya’s biological parents, because love finds a way. Guys, the fics this will create.

It’s apparently unlikely that half-elves currently exist, since it’s been many centuries since anyone explored whether humans and elves can have kids together. *eyes the above post* But love finds a way, so…?

Sunfire elves can live a really long time–which fits with the fact that Khessa’s grandma was alive 300 years ago–and Crow Lord is just trying to relax, okay.

Who wants to sign up for advanced Magical Genetics at XCC with me? Because that’s how we’ll learn what happens if two elves of different races have kids.

Also, “Callum’s Spellbook” will have more info about Earthblood and Tidebound elves, and it comes out early next year.

Claudia’s resurrection spell is not well known and it has a high cost, and we’ll learn more about that in S4.

There’s backstory to Soren’s relationship with Viren. I’m guessing it’ll be in that first book? 

Rayla may not know yet exactly what Viren meant when he taunted her with the coins in his pouch. Reason is her least favorite negotiation tactic, after all. Come on, Rayla. Just mention it to Callum, and he’ll piece it together for you. Then you can kiss him and the two of you can fly off to tell Ethari.

Did anyone else notice this, because yeah, magic rivers. I bet it’s the Tidebound elves’ work.

Horn cuffs = marriage. I’m betting each elf makes or designs their partner’s cuffs for them. That’s why Runaan’s are covered in swirlies and Ethari’s are pointy with Runaan’s eye color in them. Meanwhile, Lain’s and Tiadrin’s each have two raised bands on them, because they’re very alike.

Callum’s going to “obsess and work to connect with another arcanum.” That doesn’t mean he’ll succeed. But I bet it’ll be Moon.

Hello and welcome to another episode of “Everyone Hates Aaravos.” Archdragons and elves (with primal stone staffs, I’m hc’ing) ganged up to yeet him into the mirror. (Possibly because Queen Aditi tried it alone, failed, got turned human, ran off to Katolis, and everyone else panicked when she disappeared, so they posse’d up.)

Claudia’s not done casting big dark magic spells! Rut roh.

S4 will show us Viren without Aaravos to guide him. I’m guessing that could be because Aaravos has chosen Claudia instead, but we’ll see.

Soren and Claudia’s mom is in the first book, where we’ll get her name and the nature of her relationship with her husband.

We almost got full-Moonshadow Rayla there at the S3 finale. And powerful Moonshadows can shift into full Moonshadow form without the full moon! *braces for even more fics*

Other human kingdoms have dark mages, but they’re rare. Jelly tarts are based on hamantaschen.

Rayla had a lead role in High School Moonsical her senior year.

Some human kingdoms have a lot of religion and mythology, but Katolis isn’t heavy into it. There may be super secret plans for a tabletop/RPG set in Katolis. Earth arcanum stuff is druidic in nature.

I think that some people get redemption confused with forgiveness. There is a difference between the two. Redemption means this antagonist is realizing what they did was wrong, is working to become a better person, and/or is trying to make amends for their deeds. But forgiveness is an entirely different thing. A character can have a redemption arc but still have to work tirelessly in order to achieve forgiveness, and may never achieve it.

Even if you are trying to do better and be better, you are not entitled to anyone’s forgiveness, especially if it’s a person who you have hurt due to your actions. Just like no one is obligated to grant someone forgiveness if they have hurt them. They can let someone back into their lives who has hurt them and still not have forgiven them. The same goes for that the antagonist can be a better person than they were previously and genuinely be trying to make up for they hurt that person, and it is completely understandable if they choose not to forgive or let them back in. Sometimes, there’s just too much was done in the past and too much hurt was caused to forgive and forget another person for, and that’s completely okay.

And yes, this is about some people saying Viren does not deserve a redemption arc. If they do give him a redemption arc and have him on the “good” side, I am completely okay if it takes a while, or even never, for the rest of the gang, especially Soren, to forgive him. Soren may love him but besides all that happened, it is implied Viren emotionally abused him (emotional abusers often don’t see what they do as abuse because as long as they don’t hit their child, they don’t think what they’ve done is bad. I live with one and I know the signs when I see it), and it would be reasonable if it takes a while to let him in or look at him the same way again. So I guess what I am saying is, if they decide to give Viren a redemption arc in tdp, I don’t want them to have this done over with and quick but, you know, draw it out and not have everything be a-okay with everyone else in only an episode or two.
