I've been in the bsd fandom since...2018/2019 I think. I started with the anime. I remember being so early that at that time, almost all the bsd reviews were negative. I went to reddit, I think I went to my-anime-list too, and other websites and it was full of negative reviews. So I went into bsd with a rather "eh" mindset 😅 but I was bored that time and had nothing else to watch and I saw it on Netflix so yeah 👍

Hihi 🤭🤭🤭🤭 if you stalk me long enough, you may find that my bsd blorbo 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 is non other than Oda Sakunosuke. I love that man to pieces fr 💖 I love the fictional version I made of him in my head even more 🤭

#72 is I Am Not A Robot by Marina and the Diamonds. I realize the obvious answer is a cyborg AU for either character, but several of those already exist (for Stu, first and foremost) and I don't think it would really play to my strengths or preferences, just given the dynamic usually featured. So we're improvising here!

I actually think it works in quite a straightforward way with pretty minimal canon divergence; if I were writing it, I'd probably pull my favourite hat-trick of exploring the unglamorous pre-band startup days, or a burgeoning musical relationship under different meeting circumstances. I think I'd particularly focus on these lines, which serve dual purposes for Murdoc and Stuart both:

You've been hanging with the unloved kids Who you never really liked and you never trusted But you are so magnetic, you pick up all the pins

Never committing to anything You don't pick up the phone when it ring, ring, rings Don't be so pathetic, just open up and sing

Murdoc's bandmates and criminal compatriots are an anchor he attaches blame for his failures to, but they are in truth a hindrance to his ambitions. He paradoxically hungers for life beyond bars and alleyways yet chews his own leg to keep staggering. As they enter one another's lives, Murdoc becomes the unliked and untrustworthy anchor to Stuart, kept in his orbit by Stuart's own magnetism. Stu by contrast has no ambitions, but does have a partially untapped appetite for adoration; he's complacent and self-gratifying, but does not know gratification on the scale he could if he bites the Murdoc bullet. I think I'd simply approach it in much the same way I've speculated about their early days on the blog, and would maybe reimagine their initial meeting just to bring it down to earth. Maybe rather than the literal car-meeting-face and ensuing coma, Murdoc injures Stuart worse than intended in a burglary, enough so that he does lasting cosmetic damage to one or both eyes. Stuart perhaps withholds from telling the truth of the encounter and jailing Murdoc because the incident happens while he's up to illicit activities after hours, and Murdoc suggests he'll likely be implicated when the story is observed as a deal gone wrong. Their relationship is incredibly fraught from that time on, but with or without such a rewriting, their shared sideways-development would be the same. Murdoc begins hanging a heavier and heavier weight on the idea of Stuart and of fame both as pathways to escape, but the crookedness he's grown into the shape of makes him desperate and cruel; Stuart is resentful of Murdoc, yet increasingly othered from his fairweather social circle and unsatisfied with his life of no shape at all.

I guess that doesn't sound hyperspecific to the song, haha. It's definitely an understandable lyrical fit to Murdoc overall, you could absolutely reflect on his inability to express genuine vulnerability, but it perhaps plays a bit too sympathetic for me. I also think Murdoc's strongest asset is his willingness to show a weakness that he benefits from and weaponizing his class, his family dynamics, his sexual dysfunction, and his physical or psychological "shortcomings" as a boon to the jagged little raft he stays afloat on, so the strong façade portrayed in the song is not quite the same as what I see in Murdoc. Again, just my take if I was specifically setting out to write a fic!

It looks like we're going to see some Splatoon 2 specials return, since I believe there was an Inkjet in there! It makes sense lorewise, because the reason all the specials were replaced was because of some kind of weapons recall where they had to be overhauled. So I'm expecting a mix of brand new, Splatoon 2, and Splatoon 1 but remixed specials.

Anyway all that aside

STORYMODE

Fuzzy Octarians are kind of horrifying but at the same time I would 100% buy that plush

What would a mammalified Octoling look like? Are we going to see that? Obviously Octolings are now within Inkling society, but that doesn't mean all of them have reached the surface yet...

Clearly there's some genetic fuckery going on. The question is, to what end? Gonna come back to that bc first...

CALLIE, MARIE, AND AGENT 3!!

I'm so happy to see all of them back, I missed them. It's good to see them together! But also...

Agent 3 is dressed VERY SIMILARLY to Splatoon 1 Captain Cuttlefish! And considering Cap'n is shown to be dressed in a Hawaiian shirt and khakis... I think he's retired, and passed on the mantle to Agent 3!

If that really is the case, then we'll be serving under the very protagonist we played as in the first game... god what a narratively interesting decision. I'm so excited.

Of course, this brings up the question of Agents 4 and 8, as well as Pearl and Marina. Personally? I think we'll be seeing another Octo-Expansion-esque addition at some point to Splatoon 3, and our other characters will make a comeback. I don't think they'd drop them, since they didn't drop Agent 3 and everyone agreed that was a cool as hell choice!

What's the deal with Octavio?

Because, to me anyway, it really doesn't seem like he's been set up as the "Final Boss" this time around. We see him in the trailer, in that big robot! And also, he's not... fuzzified? Not sure what that means, but I don't think he's our main antagonist this time.

I kind of wonder if maybe he's no longer an antagonist, like, at all. After all, what would he gain by making Octos... mammals? Plus, we've done that song and dance twice now. Maybe this is a twist, a sort of "enemy of my enemy id my friend, let's join forces" thing? Maybe not, but there's some food for thought.

So if it isn't Octavio, who is the main antagonist? I'll tell you

Ruins of Arc Polaris

Aside from being the best Salmon Run map, the Ruins are notable because they are the standing remnant of humanity's last ditch attempt at survival. A sort of space age Noah's Arc, filled with some of the last of the age of mammals, hoping to find refuge among the stars. Signs still remain that say "Beware of Bears"

Bears, you say? Grizzly bears, maybe?

I know a lot of other people don't like the idea of Grizz being an actual bear. Maybe he is, maybe he isn't. He could be a bear, preserved, even immortalized, like Judd. He could be an AI, like Tartar. What's important is the idea that he is a remnant of Humanity. Of Mammals. Something that would see benefit in bringing back mammals...

...and something that may, for unclear reasons, try and recreate the Arc.

The Arc was a massive spaceship. Now I'm sure I don't need to remind you what was centerstage in the final seconds of the trailer.

It gives a reason for Grizz to have all those eggs. It gives a reasonable connection to mammals. How it all ties together? Well, we'll just have to wait and see

okay so there’s a song by marina and the diamonds called “i am not a robot” and i remember hearing it play during a commercial when I was young

i’m pretty sure it was a bullying psa thing. there was a little black girl and she was wearing a robot costume made out of cardboard. it showed her in multiple places around a school i think and she was being left out of a bunch of activities with other kids just ignoring her. when the music swells towards the end i think a teacher or other adult helped her get the costume off and the other kids may have let her join in on whatever they were doing? prior to this i think the colors were kinda washed out like it was overcast or something

i was born in 2002 so it was more than likely produced after that year, it probably was somewhere around the late 2000s / early 2010s? i also live in the detroit area in the suburbs if that means anything, it may have been a regional ad

Song 55: I Am Not A Robot by Marina And The Diamonds (oddly fitting)

Billy is tough. He acts like nothing ever bothers him and he hurts anyone who’s willing to cross him. He needs to constantly feel like the most dominant person in the room. He needs power, and he needs to be feared. He needs to be lusted after, and seen as cool and edgy, and he needs to see himself as that too. Most importantly, sometimes he needs to be reminded that he is not a robot. 

When he hung out with Max, he was definitely reminded that he wasn’t a robot. He didn’t need to act cool around his little sister, because she’d think he’s a dork no matter what. The two of them could just hang out without Billy having to worry about how he looked or how he was acting. 

When Billy and Max hung out, the two of them could do whatever they wanted, except cheat of course. And yet, Max was doing it anyways. The two of them were playing cards and Max was acting as if she wasn’t hiding aces under the table, but Billy had noticed every single time she had slipped her hand beneath the table. 

Billy acted like he was stretching his legs, extending his arms beneath the table, and he grabbed a tiny stack from Max’s side that appeared to be the high cards from the deck. 

When Max reached again, a look of shock caught her eyes when she realized she had been found out, but she tried to play it off. 

“Looking for something, Max?” Max looked up and sputtered out and excuse, but it was too late, Billy had already caught her cheating. “Do you know what I do to cheaters?”

Max got up and started to run, she knew exactly what Billy does to cheaters, and she didn’t want any of that. To her dismay, Billy was quickly scooping her up and dumping her onto the couch.

“You brought this on yourself, Max. Cheating doesn’t show integrity,” Billy’s fingers launched at Max’s sides, squirming up and down them as fast as they could. Max threw her head back, giggling loudly and limply batting at Billy’s hands. 

Billy couldn’t help but laugh along with his sister, giggling as she did. He wiggled his fingers upwards and hit a spot between two of Max’s ribs that he knew got her bad, and her response was immediate.

“Ihihi’m sorry Bihihilly!” Max screamed, squirming every which way to avoid Billy.

Laughing, Billy stopped, offering Max a hand up. “C’mon Max, I still need to beat you at cards.”

journal: do you ever write just so you can enjoy something to read?

Oh heck yes! I really do write mostly to entertain myself, even if it does mean…a lot of work, but it does mean my enthusiasm for what I’m writing comes through when other people read it. As far as my fics go, my FenHawke fics are the best example of that: they really are huge wish-fulfillment pieces, where I can linger on the exact moments I want for as long as possible. My original fiction is even more indulgent, because there I’m not constrained by existing canon (though ALID does make a convincing argument I’m not particularly concerned with DA lore either, ha!) – I just gleefully write whatever I want to read, and chuck out all the bits that don’t appeal to me. 

This is why Vam Lin is such a giddy combination of pining, found family, magic, and ass-kicking.

I’ve definitely written things inspired by songs, but mostly by the emotional state they inspire, not the subject matter. The closest I can think of is “Auld Lang Syne”, which is part of my TMNT GaVG-verse and is about the moment April realized she was in love with Donnie. I had Zedd’s “Stay the Night” come up on a shuffle and as I listened to it, the whole fic played out on the inside of my head. And now it exists! 

Ghost was also definitely inspired/influenced (and also named after) Neutral Milk Hotel’s “Ghost” (”And when her spirit left her body, how it split the sun/I know that she will live forever, all goes on and on”), and in the back of my head I have a Trevor Belmont-centric fic based on Marina’s “I Am Not A Robot”, but we’ll see if it ever gets written.
