Thank you Sally!! 💚 I’ll uncharacteristically pop in since this is such a nice tag.
Hi OP and whoever is lurking in the notes of this post :)
If you’d like to know more about “Chuck won” from pretty much every angle, I’ve got you!
You can find meta on AO3 here
I promise you that all of it is very easy to read. You can read as much or as little as you want to because it has sections.
And yes, that little monkey statue is my nemesis. The finale production details like that are under part 2, “THE BASICS: Foreshadowing and Evidence that Chuck Won.”
Here’s the section/chapter list 👁👁
chuck won truthing cause I can't stop thinking about it:
• all the times dean says this + the one time he said this directly to chucks face + in the future chuck showed sam they got turned during a vamp hunt:
• dean in the "new and perfect" heaven living down the road from john
• "bobby" telling dean how cas is out of the empty and helped rebuild "heaven"
• talking of bobby they put him in a rocking chair...
• dean is once again on the road. alone.
if anyone wants to add stuff it's more than welcome and I'm ready to rage 😌
#the vamp hunt future from 15x09 is also discussed at length in here#anyway this meta is like ‘choose your adventure level’#how deep do you wanna go? how big of a picture do you wanna see? YOU DECIDE 🤠 I merely provide#now… society if I get my shit together and add a coda about the things the prequel has been telling us since then.... especially 1x09.#anyway. pinned post has link to physical copies if that’s more accessible for anyone!#I’m not selling them. it’s just production costs

What makes Kirk and Spock's relationship so compelling is that they cannot be together. Even in a society that would accept not only two men but two men of different species in a relationship, they cannot be together.
Spock knows that Kirk's first love and responsibility must be to the Enterprise and her crew. Kirk holds everybody's lives in his hands and if he is ever distracted, things could go terribly wrong and Kirk would never be able to live with himself. If the needs of the many out weight the needs of the few, then the needs of the many sure as hell out weight the wants of a few, even if that want is theost powerful thing Spock has ever felt.
And Kirk relies on Spock and his unwavering logic to help him protect the Enterprise and it's crew. Being in a relationship would jeopardize that. As Tuvok points out to Janeway in 1x09, his logic was sound, but his emotions and connection to Janeway clouded his application of the logic. Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the Enterprise crew cannot afford that and Kirk knows that and so he keeps his feelings to himself.
Spock also struggles with the fact that he is half Vulcan, half human. He prides himself in adhering to his Vulcan half when it comes to emotion and logic. If his and Kirk's feelings were added to the mix, that would seriously jeopardize the balance he has found, and Kirk loves Spock so much, he would rather remain silent than cause the love of his life any pain.
And so they both remain silent and love from afar. And you watch as these two men that love each other so deeply and so powerfully that others can recognize that their souls are irrevocably inertwined continue to love each other even when they can't act on it, and it's one of the most compelling relationships you've ever seen.

I know I said I wasn't going to regular post for Shogun, but spoilers for 1x09 below the cut:
"But our fathers were enemies. Their misery was ours. Wars raged, even in our castle. But I had Mariko. She was my happiness.
John Blackthorne who? THIS is the tragic romance and no one is going to convince me of two things:
1) Mariko was both/either in denial about and/or not wanting to tell John about the true romantic feelings going between her and Ochiba via "translating" to him the two growing up "like sisters". Rather than deep diving into the clearly romantic feelings they have for each other. And ftr this wouldn't be the first, second, third, or up to like double digits time that she's picked and chosen how to present info to him based on her preferences.
2) Mariko is bi and these two either were or are in love, which the tea house already set up in my mind.
You can't convince me that the "playing games" bit isn't Ochiba moving around stating that Mariko is bi and the two are doing a "she's my enemy" "she's my love" tango. Give me the Ochiba x Mariko spinoff AU, two women stuck in societies that try to tell them how to be and who to be with; that rebel against it to be together w/ some gaynst mixed in = gold. Even the mind trick they have to distance themselves from situations fits in-line with LGBT+ that weren't allowed to be their true selves.
I came into this series with the "okay so MC is totally going to get with translator girl cause 'appeal of different worlds'", which tbf IS the idea but UGH now there's the potential of Mariko and Ochiba.
Also gotta say, going to be really annoyed if Mariko actually dies.

What do you make of the brothel scene in 1x09? The one with Aemond and Sir Criston?
Honestly my thoughts are that it hurt to see Gaemon Palehair, knowing what Aegon will then do to his mother and what will happen to that poor child. (Okay, we don't have confirmation that was Gaemon, but the books make it pretty obvious).
Okay, okay, I'll discuss the actual scene. It highlights one of the main themes: of seeing people--loved ones--as objects rather than as people, which is an overall theme in George's entire series.
Criston: every woman is an image of the Mother, to be spoken of with reverence.
Of course, the hypocrisy of this coming from a man who has referred to Rhaenyra as a "spoiled cunt" and hates her for his own decision to have sex with her is... beyond the pale, and obviously intended to make us sideeye. But it also underlies another problem with Criston, and with society:
He doesn't see women as people.
It does not matter if he's speaking of them with reverence or disdain. He sees them as images of something else, as objects, not as human beings who think, feel, want, and lust like himself and like everyone else. Speaking down to them or speaking highly of them is ultimately two sides to the same coin: they aren't people.
It reminds me of modern-day religions who argue that women are equal to men, but just different, you see, and hence their roles are different. They can't preach because they're more spiritual, so it's a good thing that they can't do something, after all! (It's just misogyny.)
Along these lines... Aemond's claims to want to be king are fair. He actually like, wants to do it, but his whole claim rests on Aegon, so. Again, it's seeing Aegon as a thing, a stepping stone. Aegon knows this and has always chafed against ruling because of it. To be fair, they should have listened to Aegon. He's not suited to rule. Like, I really find the whole "Team Green/Team Black" argument in fandom ludicrous and almost a hilarious parody, but the argument that Rhaenyra was unsuited to rule but the king himself sobbing and causing a public brawl while screaming "I'm not fit!" is... is, well, illogical. Let's go with that.
Anyways, patriarchy hurts men too, feudalism and monarchies are institutions of patriarchy, and all attempts to keep the family together because "duty" just wind up hurting all of them.
Throughout this scene, Arryk and Erryk Cargyll, identical twins, are present to actually stand in contrast to the tragedy and flaws of Criston, Aemond, and Aegon. While they will eventually kill each other fighting on opposite sides, they retain their view of each other's humanity--a view they apply to all, as demonstrated with their comments about the children in the brothel. They see them as people. No one else does. Their presence is actually quite a brilliant inclusion to emphasize themes. Please lean more into this in Season 2 :)))

Aemond is quite similar to Alicent in personality. They have both internalized the “duty above all” value, and both look down on those who prefer to do what they want instead of suffering by doing their duty. It’s possible that Aemond was written to be naive like Alicent as well. Alicent supposedly secretly still cares about Rhaenyra, but spends years turning her kids against Rhaenyra’s and has been plotting to usurp her since 1x05. Yet still, Alicent thinks that Rhaenyra will somehow still be safe if she is usurped by Aegon, given by her surprised expression when Otto wants to have Rhaenyra killed in 1x09.
Therefore, it’s possible that although Aemond agrees with usurping Rhaenyra, he does not realize or think that Rhaenyra and her kids will have to be killed, and therefore still desires to be friends with his nephews. Aemond is clever but he is still a child and maybe he had not realized the gravity of usurping Rhaenyra. So it may be possible that Aemond is just naive like his mother, in that respect. Maybe it isn’t a flaw of the writing after all.
Anon could be referring to what I said in this POST.
I agree that they are similar in the ways you listed, anon. I do not think that what we are seeing from them is neither real or excusable naivete. Or successful depictions of naivete.
1)
Usurpations mostly end with killing the competition. Because killing someone is a good way of making sure they aren’t going to reappear as a problem.
Any and all major aristocratic/royal people know this or they get to know this way after they become teens.
They learn their histories, they learn of the rises and falls of states and dynasties (which end mostly with the rulers’ and their families’ deaths) -- we see in episode 1 that Rhaenyra and Alicent read about Nymeria and in the last episode Alicent sends Rhaenyra a page form the same book. So we know that they had a history education of sorts. We know that they know that people kill each other for power. This is a feudal society, a pre”modern” world.
2)
If Alicent truly believes that the lords outside of the keep will want to kill Rhaenyra and if she really believes that Rhaenyra will have to kill her children to remove the options for the other lords and secure her own rule.....
Then as a thinking and so-educated person -- like how the writers are trying to get us to see Alicent as -- she should/would have immediately understood that the persons on the green side--inside the Keep--would want to and are willing to kill Rhaenyra to limit the options to just Alicent’s children.
So to claim that she doesn’t understand is disrespectful not only to her original character, but to human intelligence. Thus against her own intelligence, to emphasize the problem.
3)
Aemond is about 16 the age of majority for his society. He would be an "adult" by episode 8.
Even thought 16 year olds are 16 year olds with their specific brain chemistry, Westerosi 16 year olds are not exactly the same in "maturity" as a real, modern 16 year old because they are given much more power and responsibilities. We are also told he reads philosophy, yet he can't reason the most basic of things, like I just described?
And while he was a child in episode 6 and 7, he is old enough (12-13) to have known about some Westerosi lords' ancestors and their petty king wars where some kings and queens were definitely usurped and killed afterwards. The education of Rhaneyra and Alicent that I mention still applies to him. 12 year old boys aren't excluded, since these people so not look at 12 year old boys like we do. Remember, they become legal adults at 16.
Other than that, why would her kids, including Ameond -- after she has been telling them that they needed to usurp Rhaenyra to survive? Again, go back to episode 6 where screams into Aegon’s face that he is the “challenge, just by living and breathing”.
Aemond believed Alicent when she said to him that the lords will definitely force Rhaenyra to target them if we are to believe that Alicent told him what she told Aegon about challenges.
Why? Because a younger brother’s duty to his future king is to support him and deal with his enemies -- just as Daemon felt he must do for Viserys before the Great Council of 102 A.C. in the book. And again, they all plan to usurp Rhaenyra. Who they’d have to kill most likely.
Not just because the lords will definitely come after her, but because they are determined to go after her.
In All
The writers do not successfully separate and clarify whether it is Alicent’s envy of Rhaenyra’s willingness/ability to see and enact compromises and create space for her own autonomy & contentment, or if it is her fear for her kids that motivates Alicent. It is certainly about her feeling like she has more power, but it's muddled in the bad writing when these other two motivations haven't been properly shown or developed.
Because it can’t be both in terms of equal weight.
It can’t be both because once you add children into the murder game, nothing else matters more (or should if you claim yourself to be a responsible and caring parent of some level).
This is why Alicent and Aemond’s “naivete” and the claims of their want to be friendly with the blacks is not convincing and not real.

Hi so I'm here with history that piqued my interest (and probably only my interest)
1x09 showed us Abigail playing pool (or billiards) with Tom and Shane. I wanted to look into it because I knew a little of the history of the game from my dad and I wasn't sure how accurate the set up was.
Answer: Not really
The table has red felt. Green is- and has always been- the most popular color for billiards tables. While other colors have been used, especially in modern times, I can't find any source on when those colors were introduced aside from blue felt being used in the 1970s for colorized television tournaments. I think it's safe to say that it would've been far more likely for a seedy bar in the middle of nowhere to get their hands on a standard green table than some other color.
It looks like they were playing 8-ball Pool, which wouldn't come into popularity for a few more decades in the 1910s. 15-ball pool, which uses the same number of balls but doesn't involve any fouls around the 8-ball and only scores based on points, was on the rise in the 1870s and had tournaments in the 1880s. The balls also would've been all one color (typically red).
3. Abigail learning to play (and being good at it) wouldn't be entirely impossible, especially for someone who rejected the trappings of finer Boston society. Women typically weren't allowed to play and it would've been terribly inappropriate for her to be seen in a pool hall. But women did learn and play and have done so since the game was first invented.
I can understand the inaccuracies from a Doylist perspective and this is not at all a knock on the show. It's just something that got stuck in my brain and wouldn't rest until I got answers.

like through s1 his antagonist status slowly increases and increases and increases until it boils over in his little speech in 1x10. like in 1x02, I'd say izzy is less of an antagonist than stede's own mental issues. The Antagonist of that episode is "the ghost of nigel," aka, stede's insecurities, with izzy in a minor, external role. izzy is there to fail, which helps stede overcome his internal struggles. through 1x03 and 1x04 he continues to be antagonistic in a very minor way. 1x05 is when the climb really starts to begin, with his treatment of lucius. he's not even the antagonist in the A plot! The Antagonist of that episode, the thing countering our protagonists (stede and ed), is society, personified by the rich partygoers.
1x06 is when izzy stops waiting around for ed to kill him already, and steps into the antagonist role in the A plot. he tries to convince ed to kill him, and manipulates stede into creating the environment he thinks the ship needs to get ed to kill him. when all of that doesn't work, he tries to kill stede himself, and gets booted off the ship to go do arguably the most evil thing he does in the series.
and then he's gone for most of 1x07. The Antagonist of that episode is ed's insecurities. at the end of that episode, we see izzy setting up his big final plan to finally for real kill stede bonnet.
and then he's not in 1x08 at all. one could argue he's still The Antagonist of this episode, because he sent jack (the boots-on-the-ground antagonist) to cause a rift between ed and stede, get the boat to blind man's cove, and then get ed off of it.
and then we have 1x09. where obviously he's done something evil, but for the first half of the story, before ed and stede get sent to the privateering academy, he's portrayed as just kind of sad. like little seeds are being planted at the back of his mind that will grow a plant called Hmm I Think This Was Too Far (but he doesn't quite get there yet). He seems to genuinely think the punch was called for, and his voice is just so emotive in the first half of this episode. This characterization doesn't really jive with how he acts as soon as he gets the Revenge, or in 1x10.
Other people have already discussed how Con imbued Izzy with humanity that the writing didn't. I know some people disagree with me about this, but izzy's always been more human than the badmintons to me, mainly because of the difference in the choices between Rory and Con. Rory played nigel and chauncey as over-the-top disney villains, and it was great! I love how he played them (who doesn't??). but Con was always trying to make izzy a person, which didn't always jive with some of izzy's choices in s1. I wish it had jived better, especially with the route they took with him in s2, because if you're going to redeem a character they do need to have some humanity in them from the start. Anyways, my point is, izzy's just done something terrible, but while ed's still around he doesn't seem very happy with his victory at all. maybe on some level he recognizes that he has lost control of ed by this point, and that makes him sad. oohhhhhh now that's a good thought and makes his emotive choices actually work bang on. because that's a terrible horrible thing to be sad about but izzy is genuinely sad nonetheless. disgusting. ahh! I love figuring shit out in the process of writing meta.
and then he gets the ship. and all his sadness turns into overinflated confidence and happiness of finally getting a ship of his own. and then he gets mutinied, and he he starts begging and bargaining for his life, and ed saves him.
and then we have 1x10. which izzy spends being confused and rather annoyed up until it all comes out and he says "I should've let the english kill you" etc etc. it is incredibly easy, especially with the context of season 2, to see how this is all about restoring control over ed. "his name is blackbeard or captain" during the song bit was trying to do the same thing, trying to get the rest of the crew to call him blackbeard, so ed will see himself as blackbeard. izzy was sad because he lost control. at the end of episode 10, he's happy, but in a shaken and unnerved way, because he's regained control (but those seeds in the back of his mind cannot be shaken).
and in 2x01 he's sad again, because he realizes how out of control things got.
me every goddamn time I watch ofmd s1: wow izzy is so much less there and so much less evil than I thought he was.
