I'm working on a fanfiction that needs a lot of gods named, and it has me pondering the canon god names a lot. I was wondering what your process was for naming the Silt Verses dieties? Not to yoink it for my own purposes, they're all just such bangers and I want to know where they came from.
I wish it was more scientific than this, but I usually assemble a big pile of synonyms, interesting words, Latin or ancient Greek translations, proverbs, concealable or obvious puns* and turns of phrase around the subject, and then I mash stuff together until I have a shortlist of options (usually with my hand being forced by what already exists or what has a similar sound, or if I have too many alliterative names in circulation, etc). I pare those down to a single preferred choice, and if what I end up with is naff and stupid, I make that part of the fiction and pretend it was deliberate all along.
*for instance, the Saint Electric is a buried pun on the Light Fantastic which is a Milton / Terry Pratchett reference.

No but okay I am fully losing my mind here
I have been ranting to my friends, family, and coworkers about how good the Silt Verses is, how tight the narrative flows, how everything feels inevitable and yet utterly surprising
So maybe I should have known it would blow my socks off with the finale, just not in the way I expected
I've been saying that I have no inspiration to write fanfic because the story is just SO GOOD (I have the same feeling about The Good Place)-- I am so much happier not touching the characters and being told what they do, I don't want to wreck it
I don't know if that ending is just a MUTHAFUCKIN PLOY TO GET FANFICTION AFTER THREE SEASONS BUT BY GOLLY IT SURE IS FUCKING WITH ME
Not a single tied up loose end. NOT A SINGLE. TIED UP. LOOSE END.
THOSE ENDS ARE DANGLING ALL THE HELL OVER THE PLACE
And I KNOW it's on purpose, because they knew they were ending with season 3 and everything else has been so tight!!!
SO THEY SET EVERYTHING UP FOR A HUGE INSANE "HOW ARE THEY GONNA FIX THIS" ENDING AND THEN JUST... DON'T?!?
HELP. HELP
I am so angry. I am furious. And I know that's the POINT and it is not making it better alsjalak
HOW DARE
I fully expected to be weeping at work as I finished the last episode and instead I was just confused and frantically googling to see if I'd missed an episode or a season 4 or SOMETHING
i'm in shock. How dare you, Mr. Ware and Ms. Hussan. How dare
I was expecting a song or somethibg?!? Anything?!? Like...a finality?!?!
Ahhhhhhhhhh
Alright I'm just going to
Continue to lose it over here
I
I have so many emotions right now
I get the shrimp emotions thing I have it I see the colors I'm losing my goddamned mind

Fandom Wrap-Up 2024
thank you @moistvonlipwig for tagging!!! :D
Total words of fanfiction published: 60,028
Fandoms written/created for: Just Angel for fic (curls up and dies), but I did some pretty major art projects for Oklahoma, The Silt Verses, Echo, and Little Women!!!
Events participated in: February Fangfest 2024, the cowboy themed Zine Bash event, and AAW 2024
Fanfic I’m proudest of: Feels weird saying origin of species considering it's less than half finished but like. come on. what else is it gonna be. it's already the longest thing I've ever written, it's the first plotty fic I've made this much progress on, it's the most serious in terms of subject matter, it's the most... god calling it "experimental" feels so annoying. but you know what I mean. I have many more fun dream sequences in the same vein as the play one planned. and it's just. something i've had an insane amount of fun writing! hopefully it will continue to be something I'm crazy proud of as it goes on
Other fanworks I’m proudest of: I'm really proud of the Angel and Darla piece I did for February Fangfest, it was the first proper illustration I'd done in a while at that point, and even almost a full year on I still think it looks really really good and working on it made me feel a lot more confident doing illustrations like that! On that note, I also really like how the two vaguely-horror-podcast-inspired Cordy season 4 illustrations both turned out, and I think they were both very successful experiments with different art styles than I'm used to. The Oklahoma! zine I did for zine bash I think is maybe the best zine I've ever made, even if it was just for a tiny fandom! And fuck it, I'm kind of proud of the buffy and angel divorce fancam, even if I did make it kind of as a joke! I think it's still pretty great!
Events I’m looking forward to next year: Uhhhh it's not necessarily gonna end up being a fan thing but I do want to contribute something for the Zine Bash event that's currently running (I have like two weeks left to make something for it it's fiiiiiine). Other than that I'm living in the moment baybeeee
Projects for next year: Finish origin of species jesus christ. That's obviously the biggie, but I also have a couple other cordy fics in the works that I'd like to finish, as well as a couple of buffyverse zines and comics I've had planned out for aaaages and would really like to actually make or finish making in the new year!
thanks so much again for tagging and giving me an excuse to ramble and look back on all the Stuff i've done this year! I'm gonna tag @discocaptain @fatherramiro @the-sparkling-diamond-satine @spaghettisaurusrex @somekindofadeviant @jennycalendar and anyone else who wants to do it! feel free to talk about any types of things you've made or written yahoo!!

fictober prompt 16 “no, im not ok”
fandom: The Silt Verses
fanfiction/oc writing
characters: Pippa Strider (OC) & Lyra Christopher (OC)
“Are you ok?” Pippa took a second to evaluate her work of re-wrapping one of the travelers' many wounds.
“No, I'm not “ok”.” They said this with a dead annoyance that made sense considering this was the 3rd rewrap she had to do today and the pain medication was the only reason they were conscious.
They hadn't taken their eyes off Pippa for the entire time he had been there since waking up, save for when the sleeping medication took him.
The traveler was doing better than they were before when they arrived, nearly comatose at the door of the parish, but still had a long way to recover and a long way to go before he trusted her.
“You know sibling, if you keep glaring at me like that your neck is going to get stuck like that.” She said, sounding just like Oxbow when telling her to quit smoking “If you keep smoking you're going to dissolve into a pile of ash! Just wait”
“You try being held captive in a place you didn’t know with no idea how you got there.” The traveler didn’t move his gaze.
“First of all: not captive, you quite literally have a broken leg,” (amongst the several wounds that rendered him incapable of walking, let alone sitting up) “and two: how do you think I got here? Not like I remember either.”
(Nothing like an allusion to a mysterious backstory to break the ice right?)
Even the traveler’s hardened gaze couldn’t hide his confusion.
“Yep, washed up on the bank when I was, oh I don’t know, 7? 8? Been here ever since.”
“...oh.”
“Yep, no memories, nothing, well I guess some memories but nothing clear, so just the scars.”
The traveler thought about this, taking a moment's pause before prying, tentatively,
“..What about your family?”
“No memories, remember? besides I have this place, and Cabbage of course.”
“…Cabbage?” (Sure veggies were important but.. more than family??)
Pippa looked around the dingy room, searching for something, before settling her gaze on the table to her right, and pointed.
A big fluffy tabby cat, “Cabbage” apparently, stretched and yawned wide, showing off his claws and teeth, before curling back up.
“Oh!”
There was an awkward silence as Pippa turned around to get more bandages. But she no longer felt the travelers piercing stare at the back of her head, she took that as a good sign turning back to fact him,
“Let's get that bruise on your head shall we?”

My StoryGraph charts are so delightful and hilarious to me this year! I'm making it a goal to read more print books in 2025 but honestly, I am thrilled to have read this many books this year. Some personal observations below the cut if you're curious.
For anyone who uses Goodreads, I super encourage you to make the switch to StoryGraph! They have tons of fantastic free features in addition to their super fun graphs, and also aren't owned by Amazon. Plus they make it really easy to import your Goodreads data so you don't lose a thing.
I read so much more this year than I have in a very long time! The perks of being out of school and of having a job where I can listen to lots of audiobooks. There are many advantages to being a marine biologist... including apparently 200+ hours of audiobook time at work lol. Also, so delightful to see the times when I was in the lab a LOT, when I switched from audiobooks to The Silt Verses podcast (late Sept through Oct), when I got hooked back on Homestuck and fanfiction (Nov & Dec).

Hello!
I'm Lo; i use any and all pronouns but default to they/them :)
My current main interests are fiction horror podcasts (currently The Magnus Protocol/Archives and The Silt Verses), Hermitcraft, fantasy YA books, fanfiction for fandoms I am not a part of, and creative writing of all sorts. Feel free to recommend fiction podcasts or books/fanfics of any kind, I always have space for more!
I have a ever-growing pile of fiction WIPs, including a partial first draft of a queer romance sci-fi novel I've been writing since last march. Who knows, maybe I'll get around to sharing drabbles from it.
i think that's everything for now, I hope you have a wonderful day/night, stranger!

The Silt Verses always makes me think of this fanfiction tag I saw once that said "found family, not family of choice".
really i think one of my favorite character dynamics is “i don’t actually like you but we’ve been through so much together that i’d trust you with my life and know that we will always back each others calls. but i still wouldn’t trust you with my car keys.” like “we aren’t really friends but we’ve been thrust into an intense situation where you are the only other person i know so now we’re besties.” and “if it weren’t for our years of history i would have literally nothing to talk to you about at this work dinner.” Enemies to lovers has NOTHING on general disinterest to begrudging acknowledgment to discovering that this person is now an inextricable part of your life

Adjudicator Shrue thinks hiring deicide contractors will help him win re-election. Historically, that hasn't worked.
Devlin rose to political prominence by regulating religious practice. But Shrue is electorally weakest in the Lower Delta – precisely where public opinion on god-hunting is most polarized.
By Miranda Booker and Gregory Costner
It’s an off-year for the election cycle in the Linger Straits, but our neighbors to the south are preparing to hold what might be the most consequential election of the last 50 years this spring. In fact, this race is shaping up to be the time an adjudicatorial incumbent has failed to win re-election in the Peninsula since the Religious Wars – and boy, does Adjudicator Shrue know it. Local polling – though notoriously unreliable due to highly eroded social trust endemic to the Peninsula – shows Shrue down by 3.2 points (see our weighted average as well as the reasoning behind our weighting), and as much as 5.4 points in suburban swing districts of the capitol city of Glottage. But a recently-leaked internal poll from the Shrue campaign showed even weaker performance in the Lower Delta and the Whisper Plains, where one 500-person live-caller poll showed Shrue down by as much as 6.7 points among non-college Saint Electric likely voters, the largest voting bloc in that region. This poll almost certainly came as a nasty surprise to the Shrue campaign – and as an unexpected blessing to his opponent, Fidelitas candidate Legislator Miriam Knight – as no candidate for adjudicator has lost both the Lower Delta and the Whisper Plains and won the general election.
To counteract this disappointing showing in the outlying territories, Adjudicator Shrue is pursuing a strategy straight out of the Devlin playbook: overwhelming force exercised against religious dissidents and radicals. Following an incident of religious terrorism which sanctified a military base, along with the town that housed it, Shrue has hired a team of private deicidists to conduct operations in and around the White Gull River, tasked with rooting out the false faith worship of the Trawler-man, a local river god whose cult is considered extreme even by the more laissez-faire, permissive standards of the Linger Straits. Shrue claims that two disciples of this outlawed faith, aided and abetted by a Linger Straits citizen who is currently the subject of a heated diplomatic disputed between our nation and theirs. His strategy appears to be twofold: 1) a show of force will allow him to project strength, and 2) the specter of false-faith renegades wreaking havoc gives him the chance to align himself with High Adjudicator Devlin, a national hero of the Peninsula and champion of the Ordinem Party, of which Shrue is also a member.
More recent reporting has complicated the narrative further (including some recent reports of evidence that Bellwethers Abomination occurred several weeks or even months prior to the supposed rampage of the Trawler-man duo, the fact one renegade was arrested but managed to escape police custody and both of their whereabouts are currently unknown, and the fact that the only sworn officer of the Cloak to have conducted an interrogation during the first renegade’s brief stint in police custody has himself gone missing under mysterious circumstances), but, even assuming that Adjudicator Shrue’s version of events is correct, god-hunting may not create the rally-round-the-altar effect that he seems to be counting on. While the turbine-rich Whisper Plains are one of the most religiously-homogenous regions of the Peninsula, with over 93% adherence to the church of the Saint Electric, the Lower Delta is much more religiously diverse. Not only does it have one of the highest concentration of licensed faiths anywhere in the outlying territories, it also has a number historical of gray-market deities and outright banned belief systems. If sub-rosa radio broadcasts are any indication (as reported last year by the researchers for Transparency-Is-Godliness), many of these unlicensed faiths still boast a hard core of underground followers. Most of these non-legitimized believers are not aligned with the cult of the Trawler-man, who is widely hated in that part of the country, but they may well be left to ask: is my church next? Even among Lower Delta voters without loyalties to gray-space deities, anti-regulation sentiment is stronger here than anywhere else in the Peninsula. It remains to be seen if Lower Delta voters’ hatred for the Parish of Tides and Flesh is stronger than their dislike for government interference, making Shrue’s surgical deicide play a risky bet indeed.
The process of religious regulation is a contentious one, and nowhere has that been more true than on the Peninsula. From the time of Devlin, regulation of faith has been loosened considerably: new faiths are being added to the canon on a daily basis with nothing more than the approval of a panel of judges (though the vast majority of the applicants are corporate entities, rather than citizen petition, and some anti-regulationist cults actively prohibit their members from seeking formal approval for their faith.) The Fidelitas Party offers a different approach: instead of regulating undesirable or simply unpopular faiths, they suggest making worship of the most prominent and important gods of the Peninsula (the Saint Electric, the Petropater, the Slag King, and other industrial gods) an incentivized practice, or perhaps even compulsory. They’ve also floated trial balloons for the creation of a federal god, to encourage national cohesion, although in a country as fragmented, sectarian, and territorialized as the Peninsula, the idea of federal divinities are still too progressive for most.
With the wolves of Fidelitas howling at Shrue’s door, he may be inclined to try high-risk/high-reward gambits to win over voters in the outlying territories. Certainly, Fidelitas policy platform is widely unpopular in the Lower Delta. But whether or not a little Devlin-style scapegoating is enough to drum up support for him among Lower Delta voters remains to be seen. Born and bred in Glottage, Shrue has been criticized for being out of touch with the outlying territories even by judges and legislators of his own party. The deicide gambit is a risky bet: one that could win him re-election – or prove to be just the kind of fatal miscalculation that could only have been made by the first Adjudicator to lose as an incumbent.

both fanfiction and podcasts give me a lot of feelings about the potential ephemerality of online media. obviously, no one plans for these things to vanish, but they do, and that lack of permanence gives me feelings. anyway, the silt verses was my first candidate for binding podcast transcripts, because even when you don’t have the audio, the prose is just fantastic.
i half-chose the cover paper because i wanted to nod to the birdwatcher’s book that carpenter disguises her copy as, and half because it’s just really nice paper and feels appropriate even though i’m pretty sure those are seaside birds
formatted in two columns and smaller font both as a space-saving measure (this came out to about 300 pages) and to evoke a biblical style.
(my ideal vision for a bookbound silt verses was: softcover in faux-leather with gilded text, transcripts printed on thin bible paper, and a dustcover designed to look like a birdwatcher’s book, with a publishing emblem inspired by the waxen scrivener. but there are many aspects of that i have neither the skills nor resources for, and i’m very happy with how this turned out!)

i’m not quite sure how but the past few days i’ve fallen back into reading magnus archives fanfiction and thus thinking about them (jon and martin my beloveds)…getting the urge to relisten SO bad but i currently have a bunch of audiobooks i’m working my way through so i doubt anything will come of it
listen i feel u. i have like. so many podcasts i want to catch up on (the silt verses, mabel, taz, etc) and so many podcasts i want to Start and i still want to relisten to the magnus archives but now that i'm done with school my main Podcast Listening Time (the hour long bus ride to and from school) has been taken from me so i'm just like sitting here twirling my hair at the concept of podcasts in general
thinking about them (jonathan sims and martin blackwood and tim stoker and georgie barker etc etc etc) tho. they can live in our brains for right now

Eskew Discord
Ok so since there are now at least 2 discord servers for Eskew I’m writing a server review to make it easier for you to decide which one of them to join.
1. Quality of the name: Both are called We Are in Eskew*, I cannot tell you how much I love that (spoilers: a lot). To make it easier to tell them apart I’ll call them Eskew 1 and Eskew 2 in this list (the numbers are no indication of quality btw the servers are not rivals and if people make this post into a dividing point I’ll scream)
2. How nice are the people there?
The people in Eskew 1 and Eskew 2 are very nice and welcoming. They like to talk about theories, their excitement for the Silt Verses and occasionally fanfiction, Dungeons and Dragons, memes or parallels.
3. How good is the content there?
Easy answer: VERY good. I will not elaborate, this applies to both servers
4. Activity: Both servers are about the same size and have similar levels of activity
5. Other: Both servers love talking about Eskew (obviously)
Conclusion: Join both servers! If you are on Discord that is. I fell in love with both servers and I’m just so happy to have people to talk to about Eskew. Anyway this is mostly just promo for both servers if you read to this point: <3 And if you have another Eskew server please tell me and I’ll post that one too!
*this isn’t meant to be mean btw sometimes I can’t tell if I come across this way. If this didn’t sound mean to you just ignore this footnote <3
**Links to Eskew 1 (look, yes I am a mod there but I just became one the other day so who cares, this doesn’ t influence my opinion) https://discord.gg/pUvygCMbnv
and Eskew 2: https://discord.gg/U6A7RyueRV (made by @skyberia)
#i am in eskew#eskew#this js just promo lololol#and only for people who aren't members in any#both discords are so good and I'm just 🥺#anyway i love podcast servers too much#everyone there is so nice and lovely#and also just in case: YES both servers are amazing no i don't have a preference like both aren't the same and both are good#you know like tma has 5million servers this podcast deserves a high number of servers too?#ok i think it's actually clear in the post and i don't have to clarify as much but I've got anxiety so i have to

fictober 2024 prompt 6 “im not giving up”
fanfiction
fandom: the silt verses
word count: 406
characters: Sister Pippa Strider (OC) & Lyra Christopher (OC)
tags: disabled character, tree climbing, fluff, original characters
“Look, Pippa, I appreciate this very much but I think it’s a lost cause.” Lyra looked up with an affectionate, if a bit concerned smile, at Pippa who was struggling to get good footing up the tree.
“Hey I've already made it this far and I'm not giving up.” She said as she hoisted herself up to the next branch.
“See? Not so hard!” Pippa said, gasping for breath as she reached for another branch. “Be careful!” Lyra was beginning to lose sight of her through the branches and leaves.
For a tense few minutes Lyra waited, half expecting Pippa to fall out of the tree any minute.
“Pippa?” Lyra made their around the tree, trying to see some sign of her and not seeing anything.
They scouted to base of the tree for another few minutes, holding the handle of his cane so tight his knuckles were turning white.
“Pippa, I swear to whatever God is listening, if you get hurt trying get some stupid-“
There was a crack followed by a gasp and Pippa’s leg appeared through the thicket and a small branch came tumbling down.
“Damn it Pippa! Be careful!”
They were not in the mood to watch their best friend fall face first out of a tree he had made the mistake of mentioning was home to one if his favorite plants.
Pippa’a face appeared next out of the top of the tree, grinning like a madman, a bright purple flower held between her teeth, and jumped from a branch just high enough to make Lyra uneasy.
“For you, sir” Pippa said through wheezes and a smile as she held out the flower, “the last one I could find.”
Lyra took the flower, giving Pippa a peck on the cheek in return,
“Thank you.”
“Anything for you.”
Lyra had begun picking out the stray leaves and branches from Pippa’s hair
“Sap, But don't you go doing anything reckless again- you remember the last time you-“
“Yes yes yes,.”
“I love you but Id rather not have another heart attack over your antics again.” they teased, detangling a burr from her coils.
“Love you too” Pippa’s smile just about made their near panic attack worth it.
The sun was setting as they made their way back to the parish. With their free hand holding Pippa’s and their favorite flower sitting delicately in their breast pocket, Lyra was sure no greater happiness could exist.
