Reblogging to say I enjoy MCSM life way more when I don't pour negative energy into seeing a ship I don't like (Petra x Lukas, Axel x Olivia, anyone in that little OG treehouse trio really, they give solely platonic for me because that's my headcanon and my opinion. Just because I see Petra and Lukas as siblings/cousins dynamic, it doesn't mean everyone else will.)

I think Romesse is a very interesting ship and can be explored in several dynamics and that's fun especially the fact that Romeo is fucking pathetic /lovingly

I'm also a multi shipper. I like Jesstra, I like Petra×Maya. Stella×Binta, Stella×Olivia, Stella×Jesse

I love Xaragaard, Xara×Binta, Xara×Romeo in the right circumstances, (XARA×ME/MY OC BC SHES MY WIFE AND I LOVE HER but that's besides the point.)

I like thinking about how they would play out. I like the stories, the scenes, the communication, the fights that either do or don't get worked through, everything that goes into a ship to make it special.

Other people might see a ship a certain way like how some people see Xara × Romeo dynamic as like "Im romeo im big boy pants grrr" and personally not my cup of tea for that ship (I also like exploring the idea of all 3 admins being a throuple just as much as I like exploring their friendship)

Also imagining Jesstra/Jetra starting out really rocky for a while but them working through it for a healthier relationship. The complexity makes daydreaming so much more fun and more personal. Some relationships can be near effortless but a lot of relationships can be rocky

Like Romesse is definitely A LOT of adjusting and communicating and working after all thats happened. A lot of Romeo making up and trying to get ahold of his feelings and mortality like ITS A LOT

In honor of the @rw-ship-showdown I wanted to write about Artihunter as someone who jokingly slapped them together pre-downpour and still thinks they are actually very compelling. Just not in the super soft love wins kinda way (Although I get why people like that more) And the only way I know how to do that is talking too much so heres a far too long slug essay-

Obviously the slugcats don't offer a ton of characterization but theres not nothing to work with. Their stories, whether by their roles in it or the overarching themes do provide a backbone to work with. Even gameplay itself can provide a bit. (for some more than others) Hunter, to me, is ultimately a story about selflessness. The goal is to revive Moon, which is very much an act of kindness from both Hunter and NSH. But the weight of that action is much more significant for Hunter- Hunter is deeply sick. They're on the clock, and for all their skill in combat none of that will ultimately help them to survive longer than their body can hold out. Moon is a close friend of NSH but that means little Hunter- Hunter really gets next to nothing out of helping them, and ultimately pays quiet a bit spending their limited time alive fighting to deliver that neuron so that someone else can live.

To spend ones limited days on helping another, in a game that very much stresses the unwavering cruelty of the world and nature- is pretty notable. (And you could even say that Hunter being the Hardmode of Rain World adds another layer to this)

And then we have Artificer. A storyline that very much stands out to people as more… villainous (so to speak) than the other slugcats. Artificer's story covers a lot of things. Trauma, violence, revenge, etc. Revenge is a bit of a selfish desire- That need to see someone hurt as they have hurt you. A punishment that ultimately does not fix whatever harm was done- but feels good to see because you were hurt and now those responsible share that pain.

Artificer's actions are founded in that need for revenge, their pups killed for overstepping boundaries they didn't know existed. Is it not fair for them to be angry at that, to punish the scavengers for their violence with their own? Why should the scavengers ever be forgiven when they and their pups were not? And that's how you get that loop- Harm for harm over and over.

The original action has been lost in a spiral of violence for violence. And here stands Artificer- their very spirit scarred. Not just because they sought revenge, but because they never ceased trying to scratch that itch for violence as an answer. Artificer only has two paths for their story- killing the scavenger king (Someone who, really, has little to do with the original 'crime' of the scavengers, but represents an important individual to them- as did the slugpups to Artificer), locking themselves as karma one for good and spending the rest of their life chasing creatures that no longer even fight back in a warped sense of closure- or to dissolve themselves in the acids of the void sea because they're too far gone to find any real peace.

They can't meaningfully recover from that state, not alone, twisting in on themselves. Even if they halt their actions, they've been using violence as a feeble defense against their own pain- violence that no longer has any real direction or basis. Artificer gets no real closure from killing the scavenger king. All they can do is continue the cycle, or try to scrub it away. No real peace in a prison of their own making. So you have a creature, who even with a strict timer on their life- a body that will crumble to disease, spends its last bit of time on saving another. And another who was so caught up in the pain of loss that were eaten alive by their own anger, poisoned their own soul on such a deep level even self-proclaimed gods have no solution for them. What peace can they offer each other? For Hunter, its only a fleeting moment of happiness- of selfish love, before their own body fails them. A bit of indulgence in something for themself. For Artificer, its a single, comforting thread to ground them again, something tangible to protect and care about again. But thats a thread that will ultimately be snapped under the cruel indifference of the world. Hunters timer will tick down regardless of if it takes another with it. Its a tragedy- its doomed to end badly. Whatever good it offers to either of them to find each other will only provide the fleeting comfort of a band-aid that will be ripped away too early. But all that can be worth indulging in anyway, if only for the moment. It doesn't change the ending, but the ending was never going to be happy. Its can so yuri

a severely overlooked aspect of the gang's dynamic is that charlie and dennis were best friends long before the start of the first season. there are multiple instances of the rest of the gang calling charlie their (collective) best friend, but charlie exclusively refers to dennis as his best friend. on the other hand, dennis only ever says that charlie is his friend up until the moment charlie refers to mac as his best friend something that evidently has not been the case previously, as evidenced by mac's reaction which of course prompts him to compete against mac. stacy remembers the two of them being close, to the point where she assumes that they must be a couple, and acts disbelieving when they deny this.

mac and charlie have been friends for the longest. dennis and mac have lived together for years. but charlie and dennis have considered each other best friends since they were in their teens.

(spoilers but not really since?? the show is technically historical fiction) when mary is set to die and just as the axe swings down, we cut to her in bed with francis, a glow over them as they talk and laugh, unaware of the horrors in between and later. they’re at peace.

anyway, i’m just thinking, what if that’s how it happens with rhaenyra and alicent when it’s their turn? rhaenyra dies and we see young!rhaenyra with young!alicent at the godswood, reading and happy before everything went wrong. when alicent goes, she might be back at dragonstone, asking rhaenyra to go with her and rhaenyra does. or perhaps she’s under that same heartree with her, reading about princess nymeria and talking about dragons and cake.

Is karkat going to go through a similar arc as peridot?

Karkat's arc is a bit of a mix between Amethyst and Peridot, but both sorts of flipped on their heads!

The idea with Karkat is that he's a Jasper who woke up too early. Unlike Amethyst who woke up too late, Karkat emerges from his hole some hundred years before he's supposed to. The planet is incubating and not being super closely monitored because everything's all set and they're just waiting for the gems to grow. This leaves Karkat pretty much alone on a desolate, dark, dying planet.

He wishes for nothing more than to go back to sleep, he tries to crawl back into his hole multiple times waiting for consciousness to slip, but he can't go back to "keep growing" after he's emerged.

The longer you wait, the more your mind fills. It’d be wrong to call them memories, you didn’t exist before, so they can’t be memories. 

Purpose. What your purpose should be. You’re a Jasper, you’re a Quartz, made for war. You’re a soldier, you’re a warrior for Homeworld. You’re supposed to be big and strong, ready to fight for your creators, for your Diamond.

You’re supposed to fit your hole. You can’t.

So he makes a life of wandering the planet. It's cold and boring, so fucking boring, and he thinks a lot about what he could do. He thinks about how he's a failure to the Diamonds, swapping between fear of being discovered here and wanting nothing more than to interact and talk with another sentient being.

Unbeknownst to Karkat, another group of gems nears the Kindergarten. The Alpha Kids are a small group of rebel gems who stole a ship off Homeworld. Upon needing to stock up on supplies, Roxy locates an incubating Kindergarten that is long enough in its cycle for no gems to inhabit the planet, but early enough that they can still retrieve what they need. They land on the Kindergarten and Karkat eavesdrops, stunned to be witnessing actual living real people.

But Karkat realizes what they are, when he listens in and realizes that they're traitors.

He sees this as an opportunity. If he can turn these rebels in, then the Diamonds won't shatter him! He won't be a failure!

So he boards the ship, sneaking on as a stowaway. Roxy almost immediately finds him and it turns into that little scene.

Jane and Roxy convince Dirk to let Karkat live and stay aboard, and Karkat stays locked up in one of the rooms. He's like a little hissy cat, but he's also completely overwhelmed and overstimulated just being around things that aren't the Kindergarten.

With a lot of time and a lot of slowly building trust, Karkat starts to warm up to the Alpha Kids and eventually becomes a proper part of their squad.

this might be a hot take but buck not dropping everything to be there for everyone (yes, including eddie and chris) and not trying to involve himself and trying to fix things he can't, and learning that he doesn't need to always be useful, is actually healthy and mature and character growth and not at all ooc

like, maybe sometimes we need to put ourselves first and have a nice relaxing evening after a hard day, especially when there's nothing we could really do? or do y'all like him only when he's useful to other characters?

(a reminder that buck almost lost his father figure: maybe he wasn't in a place emotionally to be there for eddie that evening, and weren't eddie's parents still there? why would he be there too when maybe eddie was talking things out with them? like I said before, we've really exaggerated buck's role in chris' life)

actually eddie asking buck to talk to chris about this situation was too much imo bc it's not buck's place (which he recognized and acknowledged and isn't this good for him?!)

eddie's storyline had little to nothing to do with buck, and buck still managed to be there for him like the best friend he is, without overstepping, and while recognizing that he can't really do anything to help aside from being there - and he doesn't need to physically be there 24/7 bc what for? to hold eddie's hand and tell him everything's gonna be okay? bffr rn
