this is not (y)our love story
read it on AO3 at https://archiveofourown.org/works/61182127 by LilyMaeFields He will never to this day understand what made him say it. He had no excuse, not even a bad one. “Dogs aren’t allowed on the beach until September. It’s illegal for him to be here.” Kate’s smile fell. He wasn’t wrong, but the way he said it made her feel a little small. “Anthony!” Hyacinth hissed and shot him a look to quiet him. “And he should be on a leash,” he muttered under his breath, annoyed at being chastised by his little sister. Kate’s first instinct was to apologize, but something about his tone had her squaring her shoulders. “Are you going to call the beach patrol? If so, tell Sam I said hello.” She didn’t know a soul there, but he didn’t need to know that. Before he could speak, Gregory shot Anthony a look and stepped in front of him, “Ignore my brother. He was raised by wolves.” Kate Sharma isn't really ready to be back home in North Carolina and Anthony Bridgerton isn't really ready for someone like Kate Sharma to enter his life. But here they are. “Sarcasm doesn’t become you, Miss Sheffield.”
“Nothing becomes you, Lord Bridgerton.”
Anthony leaned forward, his chin jutting out in a most menacing manner. “Women should not keep pets if they cannot control them.”
“And men should not take women with pets for a walk in the park if they cannot control either,” she shot back.
Anthony could actually feel the tips of his ears turning red with barely leashed rage.
“You, madam, are a menace to society.”
She opened her mouth as if to return the insult, but instead she just offered him an almost frighteningly devious smile and turned to the dog and said,
“Shake, Newton.”
Newton looked up at her finger, pointed right at Anthony, and obediently trotted a few steps closer to him before allowing himself a full-body shake, spraying pond water everywhere.
Anthony went for her throat. “I. . . am . . . going . . . to . . . KILL YOU!” he roared.
Kate ducked nimbly out of the way, dashing over to Edwina’s side. “Now, now, Lord Bridgerton,” she taunted, seeking safety behind her sister’s dripping form. “It would not do to lose your temper in front of the fair Edwina.”

❝ one step at a time, one hope, then another. who knows where this road may go? back to who i was, on to find my future. things my heart still needs to know. let this be a sign, let this road be mine. ❞
BASICS
NAME: edwina sharma NICKNAMES: bon (exclusively by kate) AGE: 18 GENDER: cis-female PRONOUNS: she/her ASTROLOGICAL SIGN: pisces MORAL ALIGNMENT: neutral good SKILLS: piano forte, sitar, maruli, reading HOMETOWN: bombay, india
BACKSTORY
edwina sharma was born into a family riddled with scandal as her mother, a debutante and a daughter of an earl, fell in love with and ran away with a man of a lower class, with a daughter of his own. despite this, edwina’s days were filled ceaseless love from both her parents and her sister, kate, until their father’s untimely end.
despite the tragic loss of her father, edwina found comfort in her mother and sister and they grew even closer as they learned to cope with the tragedy. with his death, came many different complications as there would be no financial support from her grandparents, lord and lady sheffield. however, kate was able to come to an agreement based on the condition of edwina marrying back into nobility.
frankly, edwina did not care much for marrying nobility as she rarely received kindness from her grandparents. she merely wanted to marry well, a true love match so she could spend her days in the love she has always imagined for herself, but with the deal with the sheffield’s now in place, she must find both.
with the guidance of her sister and mother, edwina has been able to become the picture of ultimate grace and elegance as she began the search for the right suitor to make her family and herself happy.
PERSONALITY
edwina is a warm, gentle and loving person. she thrives on learning new skills, discussing interesting literature and creating meaningful connections with the people and world around her. although generally unassuming due to her kindness and young age, edwina is thoughtful and determined to do what is in her best interests. however, this is not done without a consultation of her sister and mother as she trusts them implicitly.
CLOSE RELATIONSHIPS
kathani ‘kate’ sharma ・ kate is edwina’s guiding light. no matter what situation she finds herself in, she will always consult her sister about the best course of action to proceed. there isn’t a single question edwina would not ask kate about as she knows her sister has her best interest at heart. she taught her a great manner of skills to make sure that she stood out amongst the rest as she entered the marriage mart.
mary sharma ・ edwina is much like her mother — mild, kind, and generous with her affections. she has never doubted the love her mother has for her as she continuously chose the family she had created over the family she had been born into.
newton sharma ・ the sharma’s family dog, a source of comfort and companionship for edwina.
WANTED CONNECTIONS

love interest ・ an infatuation that cannot be helped by edwina. she thinks of them constantly. of any rank or nobility.
best friends ・ people outside of her immediate family that she trusts and enjoys the company of.
new friends ・ new people she has met upon arriving at the ton for her first season.

Hi, do you have any ideas about Newton and bees? Does he chase after bees and tries to catch them or eat them? How does Anthony feel about this?
Ahhh Newton. Have y’all guessed how much I love Newton Yet? Was it the username that gave it away? Or the fact that Newton is mentioned in literally every one of my fics? Even snuck him in there comforting Edwina in Goose which like... what a sweetheart. So here we go! Newton + The Summer time+ Bees + Anthony being in a panic
Kate had been sitting at Mary’s kitchen table, Her sister nudging her in the ribs every 35 seconds to look at something in a bridal magazine, when Anthony had called the first time, Dickhead💖 flashing across the screen. “Kate are you even paying attention?” Edwina said exasperatedly, sharing an irritated look with Mary. Kate sighed “Honestly, no, Eddie.” Edwina tutted, officiously flicking the pages of her magazine. “I’ve been engaged for 3 weeks I don’t think I need to pick out the centrepieces right this second.” Kate ignored a second of Anthony’s calls,
“Mum, please! She’s being ridiculous! Can you please tell her that she needs to start thinking about these things?” Edwina said turning to Mary who was eating her scone, trying to stay impassive, Edwina tutted again “Do you even want this wedding to be amazing?!” “No Edwina, I want my wedding to be drab and lifeless just like I pray my marriage will be.” Kate said dryly rolling her eyes as Mary chuckled Dickhead💖flashing across the screen again. “Can you please answer that, Kate?” Mary said peering at her phone, “Dickhead💖 has called 3 times now.” Her brow furrowing and then “Katharine Sheffield, please tell me you do not have your fiancé programmed in your phone as that?” Kate laughed “In my defence, I mean it very affectionately. His dickheadedness is one of the things I like most about him.” a soft smile coming to her face as she picked up the phone.
“Hey Honey, What’s-?” Kate started but Anthony’s frantic voice cut across her. “Kate, God, Kate I’m so sorry.” His breath was coming in short gasps and curse and then a car horn, Anthony yelling angrily at a passing car. Kate’s heart was in her throat “Kate, it’s Newton. I’m taking him to the vet’s please can you just come?!” Kate was out of her mother’s front door before she could explain.
____________
Kate burst through the door of the vet’s office 15 minutes later. Anthony looking up frantically, Newton sitting by his feet looking...
Kate burst out laughing, crouching in front of him, his little snout swollen. “Oh buddy... finally got to that bee’s nest in the yard huh?” She cooed sympathetically as Newton looked a little shame faced. Anthony took a deep breath. “Kate, I’m so sorry, I only let him out for a second and then I heard the buzzing and he yowled and I got him here as fast as I could.” He was panicking, his hand tearing through his hair a little manically as Kate stood, Wrapping her arms tightly around his waist, his arms slowly returning her embrace, his breathing slowing. “Honey, relax, It’s fine.” Kate said soothingly her hand rubbing circles on his back “He’s going to be fine. This isn’t the first time Newton’s chased bees and gotten too close. He loves the thrill I think.” She said chuckling against his chest. Anthony took a deep breath. “He’ll be fine.” He said as though he was convincing himself, another deep breath, and then more hesitantly, “And You’re not... mad?”
Kate stepped back, looking him in the eyes, her voice firm. “Of course I’m not mad. I’m actually a little touched you were so scared for him.” She said, a small smirk twitching at the corner of her mouth. Anthony scoffed, his voice muffled, “I wasn’t scared for Newton.” Kate opened her mouth to tease him, cut off by the veterinarian calling out “Newton Sheffield-Bridgerton?” Kate bit her lip to stop the smile at the sound of the name Anthony had quietly updated a few months ago. The vet sighed looking down at Newton whom Anthony was fussily pushing through the door to the exam room, avoiding Kate's eyes. “Oh Buddy, did we catch a bee again? Daddy couldn’t get to you in time huh?” The vet sighed and Kate couldn’t help the laughter that bubbled in the chest as Anthony’s ears turned red, mumbling “It all happened very quickly.” Absolutely no rejection of the moniker in sight.

Books and Looks
Story of:
credit: @gaybridgertonuniverse
"Miss Sheffield."
Edwina knew she was being called by the headmaster and repressed a sigh as she walked into his office. It seemed at St Paul's she had been registered using her grandparents' names, not her actual name.
"My name is Edwina Sharma, sir," Edwina politely corrected when she entered the office and he actually seemed sorry about it.
"Apologies. I knew your grandparents, I completely forgot that your mother married," The headmaster said, then indicated she sit down, which she did, "So, India, Somerset, now London. How are you?"
"I am well. Just excited to start my A-Levels." Edwina said, genuinely ready to start.
Moving around was never an issue for her, but she missed Somerset. The quiet of the countryside. London was busy and loud. It was nice though. She could still see Kate more often than she did when her sister was at Cambridge. Their new old house had a garden for Newton to run around in, but the puppy missed the vast countryside he was able to run in.
Her A Levels were a welcome distraction from any nerves.
"Good," He smiled, "Universities. What are your choices?" He began writing things down in her file.
"Cambridge is my first choice," Edwina said determinedly, "English and Philosophy. After that, Edinburgh, Bristol and Durham." She had decided this
"Okay. We can get you with our Cambridge prep program. More of our lot prefer Oxford. You and another girl." He smiled, "That would be nice."
....
Eloise thought everyone at school was a moron.
Not everyone at school was a moron. Not Penelope - they were good and sociable. She was on the school paper, so she ate lunch whilst writing about the goings ons at school.
Eloise noticed someone was sitting on the bench next to her and was about to tell her to go away.
She had not seen this girl before. She was pretty - really pretty - as one could be in the drab school uniform. Her long dark hair was down and her nose was in a book Eloise couldn't read.
"What are you reading?" Eloise blurted out and instantly regretted it, seeing the startled look on her face, "Sorry, I did not mean to startle you, it's just people don't tend to read at lunch. Aside from me."
"Oh, um, The Gypsy Goddess by Meena Kandasamy. It's written in Sanskrit," She indicated to the cover.
Eloise blinked, "Wow. You read in other languages."
"Yes. I've always been good at Languages. My parents and my sister; we all speak multiple and I grew up with them reading in various languages." Edwina explained, her face warming. She didn't mean to ramble.
"That's impressive," Eloise said, shuffling closer, "I'm Eloise Bridgerton."
"Edwina Sharma." They shook hands, "What are your A-Levels?"
"English Literature, politics and history." Eloise said, "You?"
"I'm also in English Literature!" Edwina was relieved at meeting someone else on the same course, "And Philosophy and Sociology."
...
Edwina joined Eloise and Penelope's little twosome. They had lunch together, talked. Edwina liked Penelope, even if she didn't engage in their conversations as much. But Eloise and Edwina just clicked.
At the weekend, Edwina and Eloise decided to go to Oxford Street to shop for interview outfits for Cambridge.
"What's wrong with liking pink?" Edwina asked. She clutched her pink purse close to her,
Eloise stopped, "I mean, nothing's wrong. I just think that it's a sign of traditional feminity and oppression."
"You are privileged, even being a woman." Edwina frowned.
Eloise scoffed, "Because I have a rich family? I know, but I'm still limited by expectations."
Edwina nodded, "Have you ever been followed around a store by someone who was not a personal shopper? I have, my sister and her friends have. Have you ever been confused with the only other person who is of the same ethnicity as you? I doubt it, considering every girl resembles you. You're not different, you are the norm."
"So, yes. Eloise. You are privileged. You can scorn parts of femininity because it has always been people who look like you who have defined it." Edwina said, "I like pink and flowers and girly things. I like those frilly dresses because my idea of feminity comes from multiple cultures. My elder sister taught me how to ride a horse in a dress because we liked the idea of it. Don't be one of those people who gatekeep feminism," Edwina finished.
"I'm sorry. I did not realise." Eloise said. She had felt rather stupid, "You are a lot smarter than me, I suppose."
"You should expand your reading list," Edwina recommended, "I can lend you some of the feminists my sister and I read?"
"I would like that." Eloise smiled and then, hesitantly asked, "Are we still friends?"
"Of course, we are." Edwina said, slipping her hand in hers, "Come on, let's find cute blazers."
Eloise hates shopping less after that day. Only with Edwina, however.
...
Eloise becomes unnecessarily angry with Benedict when he meets Edwina.
Benedict is Eloise's favourite brother. Her favourite person. He got her.
She wanted to throttle him.
"Hello, Edwina!" Benedict greeted her happily, "Why the sad face?" The girl was a human ray of sunshine, he had never seen her sad.
"I cannot get my head around poetry." Edwina pouted, "I don't want to fail this essay." They were sitting in the drawing-room of their house, working on homework.
"Let me see?" Benedict asked and she handed him her anthology, "Nice, Keats. But the Romantics can be tricky.
"Don't mansplain poetry," Eloise said, a little more edge in her tone than she usually did with him.
"I need him too!" Edwina joked and Eloise hated how her eyes shined with admiration every time Benedict explained something and how her brother laughed and encouraged her.
Yes, fine. She was jealous.
...
Edwina came over, so she and Eloise could go to the cinema. Penelope decided that they should go alone.
"Mum? We're going out." Eloise yelled, when Edwina came, wanting to leave before-
"Edwina!" Benedict smiled, seeing her.
Eloise held back a groan and she hated how Edwina smiled at him. Sure, Edwina smiled at everyone, even the pigeons.
"Thank you for your help with Keats' poems," Edwina said, smiling brightly at the artist.
"No problem. How did the essay go?" Benedict asked, genuinely interested.
"I got an A," Edwina said and she gave him a hug which he returned happily.
....
"Do you like Benedict?" Eloise blurted out when they were sitting on their bench at lunch.
"Yes. Your brother is very nice. I can see why he's your favourite," Edwina replied honestly.
"Well, he's not very good at relationships. He sleeps with someone new every week," Eloise said dismissively, "And he's old."
"That does not sound very healthy." Edwina frowned slightly, "Maybe he should get tested. My mother is always saying that."
But Eloise didn't laugh about that and Edwina frowned when she realised what Eloise was asking. But she also felt a little hope.
"Oh, El. Were you worried that he was trying to seduce me?" Edwina asked, nudging her playfully.
"I-" Eloise stuttered, "A little. I suppose I just am protective."
"You are like Kate in that respect," Edwina said, "But you do not have to worry. May I tell you a secret?"
"Yes,"
"I don't really like boys." Edwina said, quieter, "Um, not like that. I like Benedict, but that's because I would like to have a brother, that's all."
Eloise's heart fluttered and she gave her a small smile, "We can share him, I suppose. He also has a good book collection I steal from."
...
"Amma, how do you know if someone likes you?" Edwina asked over pizza one night. She curled up on the sofa, feeding the sausage to Newton.
Kate and Mary looked at one another. Edwina didn't talk about people she liked.
"Well, usually they say so. But they like spending time with you, say nice things, you share some interests," Mary explained.
"Is there someone you like, Ed?" Kate asked, teasingly.
"No, just...wondering." Then her phone rang and she saw it was Eloise and smiled, taking her plate and running upstairs.
"Do you think she and Eloise...?" Kate asked their mum who nodded.
Mary sighed, "My baby might get her first girlfriend. I'm not ready." She mockingly wiped a tear, making Kate laugh, "Give her time."
...
Eloise kisses Edwina on accident. Well, it's not an accident.
They decided to go for a picnic in the park, to read because the weather is unseasonably warm. But Eloise stopped reading to look at Edwina.
"Eloise?" Edwina called her, noticing her staring.
Eloise leaned in, kissing her quickly before pulling back.
"I'm sorry!" Eloise said, her cheeks red out of embarrassment. She had just ruined it.
Edwina blinked, "Well, I would have liked a warning. Or at least a really sweet way of asking, like in Pride and Prejudice."
"Everyone is straight in Pride and Prejudice?" Eloise frowned.
"El, you are no romantic," Edwina chuckled and leaned over to kiss her properly this time.
...
"If I have to go over every single law the Tudors made," Eloise groaned, lying back on her bed.
"I will kiss you every time you get one right," Edwina promised, holding up the cards.
"That's bribery!"
"It works," She then leaned down and pecked a kiss on her lips. But Eloise pulled her down further to deepen the kiss, the two giggling in between kisses.
"Eloise! Is-" Violet's cheerful voice interrupted and they both looked up at the door as she stuck her head in.
"Mum." Eloise stared back at Edwina and her mother, who had gone pale.
"Oh, um," Violet was hesitating about what to say.
"Edwina, I think it's time you went home, dear." Violet eventually said. The girl nodded and blinked, looking at Eloise sadly but picked up her bag and left the room.
Eloise scoffed and went downstairs after her, "Edwina, you don't have to go!"
"I should," Edwina said, squeezing her hand, "It will be okay. I'll text you later."
"Eloise, you are too young to be-!" Violet began, but her daughter turned to her, upset.
"No! You do not get to dictate this," Eloise argued, "You do not get to tell me that!"
"What's wrong?" Anthony had come out of the office, looking between the two, hearing the yelling.
"Eloise was kissing someone in her room-" Violet tried to explain, "She was kissing Edwina," Anthony raised his eyebrows at that, looking at his younger sister. He had not expected that.
"But Anthony can sleep around? Benedict?" Eloise scoffed, "But I'm too young to know what and who I like?"
"They don't do that in this house!" Violet argued back.
Eloise stormed out, with Violet on her heels, Anthony close behind, "Eloise, come back!"
"No!" Eloise ran down the street, practically sprinting.
...
Benedict was not expecting anyone that afternoon, so hearing the rapid knocking at his door startled him.
He went and was surprised to see Eloise.
"El?" Benedict saw she was sniffling, trying not to cry. Quickly, he pulled her inside and wrapped her in his arms. She just leaned in, crying.

OKAY! Alright! Time to gather my Bridgerton S2 thoughts...
This post will more than likely be a long one and kinda ramble-y, dive in below the cut at your own risk. 😉
Obviously there will be spoilers. This is your warning, hehe. And please feel free to share your thoughts and ideas with me, I'd love to chat!! (And let us hope I can remember all the things I want to say...)
Overall, I REALLY liked this season. I liked it better than S1, but that's no hate to Saphne and their story. I very much enjoyed both for their own reasons. Also, I wish I had known to bring tissues for this season because SO MANY THINGS MADE ME CRY!
General thoughts on what I liked/didn't like:
Liked:
I like how they interpreted Kate and Anthony's love story from the books. Meaning, I like how both characters in the show accepted/acknowledged that they loved the other - internally at least - but the reason they fought it so hard we due to a sense of duty. Versus in the book: Kate thinking she wasn't as pretty/desirable as her sister, and Anthony refusing to love because he was sure he was going to die young.
Going off of that, I liked the change that Anthony didn't want to marry for love because he didn't want to be the cause of the type of pain Violet went through if anything ever happened to him. This felt more real - in conjunction with the flash backs - rather than this arbitrary belief that he only had a few more years to live because he obviously wouldn't out live his father.
WOO! That sexual tension! Hot DAMN.
Anything and everything Benedict/Luke Thompson. He fucking SLAYED this season, and no one can say otherwise.
Also, I got to watch Luke dress down, and I am all for more Luke T skin in my life.
Pall Mall was AMAZING.
More Bridgerton brothers fencing!
The Bridgerton's failed ball, but watching Anthony bring the Bridgertons and Sharmas together with the country dance! OMG IT WAS THE BEST THING EVER. EVERYONE HAD SO MUCH FUN! Well for a moment at least.
Disliked:
I didn't like that they hurt Edwina in this story. I like how Edwina in the book cottoned on to how Kate and Anthony felt and helped bring them together. The only reason I am not in an absolute rage about it is because of the badass backbone she grew from the revelation. It hurt like hell to see her go through that when you kept wanting Kate to just talk to her, but Edwina grew so much from the situation and finally became her own person.
They didn't give me enough Newton. Newton is an agent of chaos. We got a few scenes of sass and one scene of chaos - fall in the river. Not nearly enough.
The Sheffields. They are assholes. (Good for the plot, but I just dislike them because they are assholes.)
The whole Jack/Prudence/Portia triangle thing. Like I know Jack wasn't actually involved with Pru, but as soon as he made moves on Portia I was uncomfortable. 🤢🤢🤢🪕🪕🪕
The Featherington mourning dresses. Those browns were rancid.
The fact there was no explanation for Frannie's "disappearance"
Character points:
Anthony:
I am surprised the man didn't have a heart attack in the beginning. Talk about your Type A personality. Granted the flashbacks gave us a lot of insight, so we know why he is the way he is, but holy fuck. I've never seen someone micromanage their life so much.
The fact that I heard him say the phrase "child baring hips" 😡😡😡. Fuck off.
The INTENSITY this man brings to his performance is AMAZING.
Also, he made me cry MULTIPLE times season. Watching Jonathan's face crack as he cries immediately makes me cry. I wasn't ready.
THE BEE SCENE! 1.) I need Jonny to never make that panic/emotional face ever again. That hurt. 2.) The feeling of the hearts!!! What I perfect way to reassure Anthony that she is okay, even if Kate didn't realize how poignant it was!!! BRILLIANT.
His whole speech when he says "I love you" to Kate at the end. BEAUTIFUL. Full heart on sleeve. A++++
Kate:
It was like watching Anthony from S1. Which I'm sure was the point, but woo! Major deja vu.
Watching the battle of wits between her and Anthony: *chef's kiss*
Watching her struggles was so beautifully acted.
Also, I loved her little chat with Eloise. They played it out that those two could become close in future seasons. I'm here for it because that also plays into Ben becoming close with Kate, which I 1000% want.
I like how Kate kinda ended up being the one to finally give in and take the initiative when they first had sex. She said "yes let us finally do something for ourselves."
I love Kate. She is amazing, especially after she recognizes and acknowledges her issues. Yay for accepting happiness!
Kathony:
How. HOW!? Is it possible to have so much chemistry and have the act of "dancing around each other's faces, nearly touching" be SO DAMN HOT!? What is this witchcraft!? It was hotter than any of the damn sex scenes in S1. Everyone, I give you: the "female gaze". You're welcome.
THE WRITERS REALLY SLOW BURNED THE HELL OUT OF THIS DIDN'T THEY!?!?!? 👀👀👀 Straight out of a gd fanfic.
Once they got together at the end, and seeing them so happy together was so beautiful. And I don't care that they made out in front of family. Those two idiots in love would so do that. And the family was happy for them, so 😛.
Benedict:
Everything.
The snark from the beginning. Me and my dark ass humor love him.
He fucking MOOED at Eloise. 🐮🐮🐮
Watching him dump a whole ass pouch of drugs into his tea, down it, and proceed to get high af. A++++ However, I thought he was going to do more during the dinner. That scene felt too short 😂.
I guess Benedict and windows are a thing: he yells out of them, gestures out of them, ... and eventually climbs out of them to run to a lake - while sick - to get rid of a boner. Windows. Who knew? 🤷🏻♀️
Not only an artist, but he makes up poetry on the spot!? Sophie's a goner. She won't be able to resist his romantic ass. (I certainly can't.)
I GOT TO WATCH THE MAN STRIP, AND I GOT TO SEE HIS ASS. Not mad about it. 😇 (Frankly, I thought the scene with him sleeping with the model was going to be more of a thing. Guess not.)
I can only imagine how the news about Anthony's monetary contribution killed any and all ideas about who he thought he was becoming. Bring on the "#2/second son" gloomy thoughts. However, I was pleasantly surprised by Anthony's praise at the end when Ben confronted his brother about leaving the school. I'm glad his family seem to appreciate his abilities.
Eloise:
Boy! Did this poor girl go through the emotional rollercoaster this season! Social season stress, almost uncovering Lady W, finding someone she's attracted to, being threatened by the Queen, pushing away the man she's attracted to, scandalized by Lady W and then finding out her best friend has been keeping a secret that she is Lady W. THAT IS SO MUCH.
I felt bad seeing her so uncomfortable and feeling like she can't live up to expectations. However, seeing her with the giant feather in her hair in the beginning was quite humorous.
She did manage to make the Queen laugh, which was unexpected, but I loved!
Bless her for always sticking to her beliefs and ideals. She's a badass.
That last scene with Penelope. Holy. Fuck. SO MUCH EMOTION. But so good. I hate that she's hurt though. I have no idea how they will find their friendship again.
Other characters:
I didn't expect the Colin storyline where he outs Jack and protects the Featherington women. But I liked it! And I also liked how natural his changing feelings towards Pen felt, especially after what Marina said to him. But of course they had to throw in that heartbreaking line at the end. 😬😬😬
Boy, did Pen's Lady W secret really come for her at multiple angles this season! I wasn't expecting how quickly that was all going to happen. And again that ending was devastating between her and Eloise.
Speaking of Marina. I'm glad they seem to be treating her story well. Book Marina's story is very tragic, and I hoped show Marina's story would be somewhat easier on her. The poor thing deserves it. But I have NO idea how the show is going to bring Phillip and Eloise together.
Phillip you big ass botany nerd. 🤓🤓🤓
Seeing how excited Hyacinth became when Anthony asked her to dance! My heart!!! Just being the best big brother 💙.
ANTHONY AND GREGORY'S SCENE ABSOLUTE DESTROYED ME! I WAS A SOBBING MESS. I CRIED SO MANY TIMES THIS SEASON. I WAS NOT OKAY.
Justice for Francesca!
I love seeing Lady D and Mama Bridgerton team up to play matchmaker. It makes me happy. Lady D has become this second Bridgerton parent and I'm here for it.
I will say, seeing Lady D RATTLED this year was a shock. I was not expecting that. HOWEVER, I think it made her more... human. Even those with that "fuck around and find out" attitude can hit bumps in the road.
The scene with Violet and Anthony after she tells him that Kate is awake also destroyed me. SOMEONE SHOULD HAVE WARNED ME I WOULD NEED TISSUES!
And Daphne!! I adored this more wise and mature Daphne. You can really see the growth from S1!!! 💙
Okay. My brain is shutting down. I don't think I can think of anything else right now. But PLEASE share your thoughts and feelings! I'd love to chat about this season 😊!!!

I finished season 2 of Bridgerton and I have thoughts™
The Viscount Who Loved Me is my favourite book of the series and I was a little worried what they’d do with it... because these screen adaptions are always changed for added DRAMA and stuff, but overall I liked the season.
- Kate and Anthony are 🔥🔥🔥 from the beginning. A+ casting, Simone and Jonathan have insane chemistry.
- Anthony is a hot mess all season and I love it!
- Kate wants to do right by everyone so bad, but my girl needs to go easy on herself and let herself love that hot mess of a man.
- Newton! The true star. And Kate and Anthony bickering over who he belongs to at the end is amazing. “He doesn’t listen to me.” “And I do?”
- Edwina is all sweet and naive all season... and I didn’t really like that. I think I like book!Edwina better. in the book she says she wants to marry a scholar, someone she can have intelligent conversation with... here she just lusts after Anthony and is blind to him and her sister blatantly eye fucking every time they’re in the same room.
- The whole Sheffield/Sharma backstory... meh. (was Anthony Head in the neighbourhood and needed something to do?) I still don’t understand why they changed their name to Sharma... They didn’t change Simon’s name even though they cast a man of colour to play him....
- I feel like they brushed over some things and just quickly added them because it’s such a big thing in the books and the fans were hyping it up. Like the bee sting and Kate’s trauma. The bee sting was barely a thing and the storm just “unsettled” her. Where was my Kate hiding under the desk because she’s that scared of the storm? Where was the Kate and Mary conversation about her mother?
- Penelope and the other Featheringtons were very unlikeable all season. I know Pen is only supposed to be 17 or 18 or something but god... i don’t want this Pen with Colin.
- Colin... I don’t know what to think of him. WTF was that whole Marina thing? And the twins are George’s kids now and not Philip’s? I suppose they did set up Sir Philip the botanist... but Marina seemed fine. Though I guess To Sir Philip with Love isn’t happening for a few more years.
- Benedict. The best Bridgerton brother - hands down. High!Benedict was hilarious and I love his relationship with Eloise and him constantly mocking/teasing Anthony. I can’t wait for his season.
- Eloise the feminist warrior... meh. I liked her little flirt with Theo. If they don’t do To Sir Philip With Love, I wouldn’t mind her eventually marrying him and have her cause another scandal of marrying below her station.
- Hyacinth and Gregory, my beloved children! they’re so precious. Anthony dancing with Hyacinth at the ball and telling Gregory about their dad - my heart!
- mama Bridgerton/Mary/Lady Danbury/Queen Charlotte these ladies are a force to be reckoned with! I loved them pulling together after the wedding that never was and Violet and Mary talking some sense into their idiot children at the end.
So Eloise knows Penelope is Lady Whistledown... how are they going to drag that out until the end of Romancing Mr Bridgerton? Madame Delacroix already knows too... how many more people are they going to involve? At this rate Colin is going to be the last to know rather than the first.
Also Eloise knows and hates her now (we’ll see if that lasts) why would she not tell Colin when she realises he’s into Penelope or when they’re engaged. Even if he goes “yeah, I know.” by then. They keep saying the Bridgerton fam is so close so wouldn’t it make sense for her to share this big secret about her brother’s fiancee with him?
And I feel like they used the running away to be with Philip thing with Theo now so they might not do that book... and they showed Philip and Marina “happy”.
Also Eloise has her hair down most of the time... when it’s such a thing in To Sir Philip with Love that she has her hair up all the time and he wants to take the pins out so see it not tied up in a bun at the base of her neck. And when they have sex and he finally gets her hair ‘loose’ she mentions it’s always up in a bun ever since she was 16. but again - TSPWL isn’t happening for a while yet.
Where was Francesca?? Has she already met John? Is she already married?
I was kind of disappointed they used the caught in a compromising position and are forced to marry with the Featheringtons instead of Kate and Anthony... but on the other hand I didn’t really like that part of the book where Anthony pretends he doesn’t love her and she’s miserable at home alone. So I'm kind of torn™ on that one.
Overall it was a good season, though certain choices were made.

My favourite quotes from The Viscount Who Loved Me..
1. “Of course I know. It’s just that when you agree to be mother to a child you haven’t borne, your responsibility is twice as great. You must work even harder to ensure that child’s happiness and welfare.”
Can we take a moment to appreciate how amazing of a person Mary is. She is every step child’s dream 😊
2. “Miss Sheffield,” he murmured unthinkingly, “you are as lovely as your sister.” “And you, Lord Bridgerton,” she replied in a tone that could have frozen champagne, “are almost as handsome as your brother.”
This was the moment that Anthony realised that he would never get to have the last word with her, or the upper hand in any sort of relationship he would have with her, for that matter 😂😂
3. “You should have a tulip,” he said matter-of-factly. “It isn’t right that Edwina receives all the flowers.”
I find it so ironic that he was constantly trying to charm kate while he was supposed to be winning over Edwina. Also, If someone can read this and not immediately swoon, they are probably dead inside 😂
4. “He wasn’t sure how it had come about, but her good opinion meant a great deal to him. Of course he needed her approval in his much-neglected suit of Edwina, but there was more to it than that. She’d insulted him, she’d nearly dunked him in The Serpentine, she’d humiliated him at Pall Mall, and yet he craved her good opinion.”
This man was whipped soo long before he realised it. I can literally picture him asking Kate’s opinion on the smallest things, after they get married 🥰
5. “A man with charm is an entertaining thing, and a man with looks is, of course, a sight to behold, but a man with honor—ah, he is the one, dear reader, to which the young ladies should flock.”
Is it just me, or is Lady Whilstledown so full of wisdom. You could’ve never guessed that she’s a teenager. If only she was there to tell me this when I was going through my teenage years 😅
6. “And then there was Kate Sheffield. The bane of his existence. And the object of his desires. All at once.”
This perfectly sumps up their relationship and how they fell about each other 😍
7. “And instead he couldn’t stop thinking about Kate. Kate, who, much as she infuriated him, couldn’t help but command his respect. How could he not admire one who clung so steadfastly to her convictions? And Anthony had to admit that the crux of her convictions—devotion to family—was the one principle he held above all else.”
They’re so alike. Both are equally stubborn and would die for their families. A match made in fictional heaven 🤩
8. “And it was stunning how much he wanted to be the one to make her feel better.”
“But she wished—oh, how she wished—that when he was ready to face his fears, she could be the one to help him.”
The fact that they were so invested in finding out more about each others fears, and helping the other overcome it, is why their relationship is so meaningful ❤️❤️
9. “It was that spark. That damnable spark that never seemed to dim between them. That awful prickle of awareness that burned every time she entered a room, or took a breath, or pointed a toe. That sinking feeling that he could, if he let himself, love her.”
I CAN’T. 😢 Anthony Bridgerton is a lovable idiot. But an idiot nonetheless 😂
10. “It was a bee,” Kate practically wailed. “Just a bee! Surely we can’t be forced to marry because of a bee!”
This is the funniest moment of the book. That bee died a heroic death. Anthony probably thanked it every night in his prayers, for creating the opportunity for him to marry kate 🤣🤣
10. “He wouldn’t, in a million years, have allowed himself to choose her as a wife. She was far, far too dangerous to his peace of mind.”
I’m certain that Anthony has the emotional intelligence of a toothbrush. Thank god Kate was there to knock some sense into him 😂
11. “But Anthony’s mutterings were cut short by a big, sloppy kiss from Newton.“I think he likes you,” Kate said, so amused by Anthony’s disgusted expression that she forgot to be self-conscious about her position on his lap.“Dog,” Anthony ordered, “get down on the floor this instant.” Newton hung his head and whined.“Now!”
We all know that Anthony ADORES Newton, he just doesn’t like to show it. Also, the fact that he addressed Newton as “dog”, will forever make me laugh 😂
12. “Anything in my power, I give to you.”
He says things like this, and continues to tell himself that he isn’t in love with her. Edmund is shaking in his grave because of his son’s stupidity 😑
13. “It was as if a certain side of her were visible only to him. He loved that her charms were hidden to the rest of the world. It made her seem more his.”
Anthony is the only man who truly recognises & admires Kate’s beauty (both external and internal), when she was always considered to be just ordinary by everyone else. AND the fact that he takes pride in it. 😭😭😭
14. “Listen to me,” he said, his voice even and intense, “and listen well, because I’m only going to say this once. I desire you. I burn for you. I can’t sleep at night for wanting you. Even when I didn’t like you, I lusted for you. It’s the most maddening, beguiling, damnable thing, but there it is.”
This is the most romantic quote in the book, and the moment we all realised that we were a little too obsessed with Anthony 😍😍
15. “This Author cannot fail to note that he always seems to be murmuring something in his lady’s ear, and that something always seems to make her smile and blush. Furthermore, he always dances with her one more time than is considered de rigueur.”
The fact that he was acting like a love-sick puppy, when he was supposed to be keeping his distance from Kate, is iconic. Seriously Anthony, you could’ve tried a little harder. Also, Penelope is a kanthony stan like the rest of us 🤗
16. “He cared about her. He cared about her far too much. He craved her company when they were apart, and he dreamed about her at night, even as he held her in his arms. He wasn’t ready to call it love, but it terrified him all the same. And whatever it was that burned between them, he didn’t want it to end.”
The part about him dreaming of her when she’s next to him. 😢 If my future husband doesn’t feel this way about me, I’d rather remain a spinster 😭
17. “He had fallen in love with his wife, and now the thought of dying, of leaving her, of knowing that their moments together would form a short poem and not a long and lusty novel—it was more than he could bear.”
I’m convinced that Anthony used up the last active brain cell he had trying and failing to manage his siblings. Though, I can’t help but find this sweet 😢
18. “But if she was destined to be alone, even with a husband at her side, then by God she’d be alone and strong.”
This right here, is the reason I love Kate. She doesn’t need a man to be strong. She’s an independent queen 👏👏
19. “When you two idiots find women gullible enough to actually marry you,” Anthony snapped, “Then you may presume to offer me advice. But until then…shut up.”
“Colin looked at Benedict. “Think he’s angry?”Benedict quirked a brow. “That or drunk.”Colin shook his head. “No, not drunk. Not anymore, at least. He’s clearly hungover.” “Which would explain,” Benedict said with a philosophical nod, “why he’s so angry.”
The fact that the two of them ended up marrying women who each has more intellect compared to that of the three of theirs combined, is ironic 🤣
Also, I love how Benedict and Colin ignore how distressed Anthony is, and continue to mock him, when he was supposed to be having an existential crisis. And how they were like, “just go tell your wife you love her, you drama queen” 😂😂
20. “It means that love isn’t about being afraid that it will all be snatched away. Love’s about finding the one person who makes your heart complete, who makes you a better person than you ever dreamed you could be. It’s about looking in the eyes of your wife and knowing, all the way to your bones, that she’s simply the best person you’ve ever known.”
Sighhhhh 😍😍
21. “It was the first time—even after all these years of expecting my own death—that I truly knew what it meant to die. Because with you gone…there was nothing left for me to live for.”
Why must he be so romantic? 😢❤️ Maybe one day technology will be so advanced that we can each have our very own Anthony Bridgerton artificially created for us 🤞 😂

24 Days of TVWLM // Day 5
March 5th: Chapter 4
Note: So obviously it is not March 5th. I saw the Batman that day and just didn't have time and then I got sick and so I'm 2 days behind now. But that's okay, this way I got to enjoy the Batman and also read 3 chapters all in a row! I'll still dedicate one post per chapter though, just to keep things organized (though I might just do two today and then two tomorrow. I am tired).
Edit: they've definitely changed this chapter a bit and I AM ALL FOR IT! Anthony getting full on submerged in the lake instead of Edwina? YES! Both sisters eyeing Anthony getting out and then Edwina noticing her sister eyeing Anthony?? YES!!
Thoughts:
Although I still loved this chapter, any chapter with Kate and Anthony is amazing, not much actually happens? Like sure you have the usual bantering between the love birds and the whole chasing Newton and Edwina falling into the Serpentine, but if you really think about it, none of that really hold any significance. It mostly just sets up for the next chapter to be honest. There is one thing that could be a bigger deal, but that honestly is just a theory of mine and never actually fleshed out in the book. Nonetheless, there's still some great dialogue and inner thoughts going on of course!
So does Mary see that Anthony and Kate are much better suited than Edwina and Anthony?? It's certainly hinted at that she's trying to play matchmaker for them and I can't for the life of me remember if JQ ever actually addressed that in the rest of the book? Like maybe the night before Anthony and Kate get married, but I seriously don't remember. Someone tell me if that happens. Or I guess I'll see once we finish the book. If I remember that I had this question.
Show scenes:
Honestly there's nothing in this chapter that I absolutely really want/need to see in the show? Again they have some great dialogue and scenes, but I honestly wouldn't be disappointed if this whole chapter was missing from the show. It was hilarious that Kate and Anthony were chasing after Newton, but honestly Anthony was a massive dick at the end of the chapter.
Especially thinking that Kate somehow orchestrated the whole thing because what? She was jealous of Edwina? This man's head must have filled up with water rescuing Edwina because clearly he had no brain if that's what he thought. And why was he so mad? I never got why that whole situation made him so angry. Sure okay Edwina fell in some water, but she was literally fine and it was an accident. I dunno, that whole end scene kind of ruined the chapter for me tbh.
Favorite parts/scenes:
I do love the part where Kate tilts her head to the sun and suddenly Anthony is like oh shit. And then he tries to help her with her bonnet so she can feel the sun more clearly?? It's so adorable and a much softer side to Anthony than we've scene so far. And it makes Kate get all flustered which is cute too.
Favorite quotes:
"'They don't,' Kate replied. 'Well, they do. Well they don't and they do.' 'That clears things up immeasurably,' he murmured." - I love sarcastic Anthony
"'You could never bore me, Mrs. Sheffield,' the viscount said, debonair rake that he was.'"
"Her sister was still young and impressionable. What if she couldn't resist one of his smiles? or his glib tongue?" - you mean like you can't seem to do Kate????
"'I'd be delighted,' he said with a wicked smile, and Kate had the distinct impression he was agreeing to go for the sole purpose of vexing her." - oh he so was, I love it
"'You,' Anthony said forcefully to the dog. 'Sit down and be quiet.' Much to Kate's surprise, Newton obeyed, settling his plump bottom onto the rug with almost comical alacrity." - okay I lied I definitely need Anthony talking to Newton and ordering him around. This is so funny.
"'Clearly.' he shot back, keeping his voice low to that Mary could not hear, 'they are not so very different from women. Both breeds hang on my every word.' Kate stepped on his hand as he knelt to fasten the lead to Newton's collar. 'Oops,' she said, rather insincerely. 'I'm so sorry.'" - as you should Kate! he was being a proper asshole
"She had her face tipped up to the sun and was basking in its warmth. And for one extremely disconcerting moment, Anthony felt a sharp stab of ... something." - oh Anthony you poor child. You never stood a chance
"She let out a little sigh, and a look of longing crossed her face, so intense that Anthony almost ached for her." - AHHHHHHH!!
"Her entire face lit up at the prospect, and that strange stab of something pierced his gut again.
"Kate held still, just as he'd gently ordered, but when his fingers accidentally brushed the skin on her temple she stopped breathing as well. He was so very close, and there was something very odd about it. She could feel the heat of his body, and smell the clean, soapy scent of him. And it sent a prickle of awareness straight through her." - Kate, you also never stood a chance.
"'Can you feel the sun any better?' he asked." - this line was so simple, but that's why I love it. I can almost see him moving her bonnet and then whispering this to her because he's just overwhelmed of her presence.
"'Sarcasm doesn't become you, Miss Sheffield.' 'Nothing becomes you, Lord Bridgerton.'" - seriously, put him in his place, he's being so annoying at the moment.
"'Shake, Newton.' Newton looked up at her finger, pointed right at Anthony, and obediently trotted a few steps closer to him before allowing himself a full-body shake, spraying pond water everywhere." - as you should. This is why we love Newton.
So while I loved their banter, this chapter really has no significance (I know Edwina gets sick, but I don't think that really impacts anything to be honest) and not something I absolutely need to see in the show. Great dialogue, but that's about it.
Use the tag or drop a comment/ask in my inbox to talk about it!

Bridgerton Recap: Mr. Duplicity
Satiated, Mr. Brookes has a stroke of genius: since Kate shares gloves with her sister, why don’t they use her to size the ring instead? Anthony and Kate both object big time, but once the ring’s on, they share a moment staring at it together. She comments on its beauty and he explains it’s the same ring his father offered his mother. He delicately holds her hand, using his thumb to graze the ring and runs it along her finger, but then Edwina and Lady Mary show up. Kate and Anthony separate abruptly, but it still feels notably awkward, especially as Kate struggles to pry the clingy ring off to give her sister.
Thankfully, Lady Danbury enters with a distraction, though it’s not exactly a positive one: the Sheffields — Lady Mary’s estranged parents — are in town and will be attending the upcoming engagement dinner. Awkward family dynamics aside, Kate’s especially thrown; she still hasn’t told Lady Mary and Edwina about the Sheffields’ financial arrangement.
Time to get some fresh air! Anthony takes Edwina on a promenade while Kate and Lady Danbury walk and talk behind them. A repentant Mr. Dorset appears, requesting a turn around the lake with Kate. Edwina comments on how good they look, suggesting Dorset might help convince Kate to remain in England after the wedding. Anthony simmers in a haze of jealousy, watching them get into a rowboat together.
Kate and Mr. Dorset have a very pleasant conversation with no arguments — if that’s the kind of thing you’re into. He mentions the tranquility he associates with India, and Kate admits she’s looking forward to going back, becoming a governess, and having an independent life. Dorset had assumed she would be staying in England with her sister, but then mentions he himself thought about making his way back to India to enhance his medical practice. Kate says she would be happy to show him around, and we should all be glad Anthony can’t hear any of this, because his beautiful head would probably explode.
In true teen girl fashion, Eloise has fed her family a lie about attending a lecture on flower arranging with Penelope. Instead, she drags a chaperone into the dodgy streets of Bloomsbury (and quickly ditches her) to catch an underground assembly on women’s rights. She spots Theo Sharpe, the printshop worker who provided — and even contributed to — the pamphlet that introduced Eloise to this world. They flirt and she mentions she has some notes for him.
But let’s get back to the lake! As Kate and Mr. Dorset finish their boat ride, Edwina and Anthony await them on land. The viscount shit-talks Dorset’s knot-tying skills and insists that Kate take his hand to get out of the boat. But when Anthony’s hand lingers too long, Kate pulls hers away, sending him flying backward. He trips over Newton (who’s a good boy?) and falls back into the lake, taking Dorset with him. It’s a delightful moment of physical comedy that ends with the Sharma girls ogling Anthony’s chest, his white shirt now see-through and clinging à la Colin Firth in 1995’s Pride and Prejudice miniseries. This is art! High art!
Before heading to Lady Danbury’s for dinner, Lady Bridgerton drops in on a much drier Anthony. Worried he’ll live to regret his decision, she urges him to pursue a love marriage instead. But Anthony says it doesn’t matter what he wants at this point; he can’t dishonor Edwina. His mother agrees that a gentleman cannot withdraw his proposal but offers the juicy tidbit that a young lady can. So you’re saying there’s a chance?
Kate tries to tell Edwina about her grandparents’ arrangement as they get ready, but Lord and Lady Sheffield arrive too soon. They gush over Edwina but pay little regard to their daughter, Lady Mary, or Kate. The pettiness carries into dinner and Lady Sheffield won’t let go of the grudge against her daughter. Lady Mary, who’s been pretty demure all season, speaks up and says she’s glad her daughters grew up away from people obsessed with money and titles. This, of course, tickles Lady Sheffield; she brings up the trust fund set up for Edwina should she marry a well-bred Englishman. Though this is news to Anthony, he jumps in as Lady Sheffield criticizes Kate for eluding the truth; he calls the Sheffields out on their bad manners and says the Sharma daughters are smart, kind, and loyal thanks to the upbringing of both their parents. He kicks them out — bye-bye, inheritance.

so i finished season 2 of bridgerton and had Thoughts
god are kate & edwina beautiful.
but the changes made to their personalities/relationship from the books is Not It
i loved edwina being a nerd in the book
they girlbossified kate :( where’s my girl who had a full on panic attack during thunderstorms “oh they unsettle me” no girl they’re supposed to bring back memories of ur mom dying
like kate’s memories of her mom dying vs anthony’s guilt over not being present when his dad died???
instead anthony gets to watch edmund die in violet’s arms.... yeah give him more trauma
like the whole idea of “i can’t be older than my dad was so i’m going to die young” is such an important part of anthony but they didn’t touch on it. like his great fear is his own mortality
the anthony/edwina going as far as a wedding... wtf no
they really heard “ove triangle w a viscount and two sisters” and took it way further than it ever went
kate and anthony’s whole thing was “everyone knows we’re in love except us” which is such a great trope
instead we get violet, mary, and edwina being full on shocked
the queen shouldn’t be a main character it just takes away from the story
also have the whole featherington plot was annoying
im just sad we only got like two scenes of married kanthony and no wedding
my fave scene was probs the races or even the last pall mall scene after they’re married
newton my beloved, you were not present enough
benedict’s whole art school thing... like i love that plot for my boy, but i’m really curious how it’s going to all pan out esp bc sophie seeing his art was him being vulnerable and the rest of the family were like “benedict does art???”
i’ve been reading penelope & colins book for forever and haven’t finished it yet bc i just dont like them so i can’t talk abour the rest of the series and how this season might affect it
the whole plot w the sheffields being mary’s parents and the stipulations about supporting mary & edwina’s dowry was just stupid like....
also kate keeping said stipulations from her sister
anyway kate & edwina’s relationship deserved better
edwina deserved better, she’s a real victim here
i loved kate in the book so much, but by taking away her motivations & her own trauma concerning parental death??
no sucking bee venom outta da titty :(((
like if i hadn’t gone in w knowledge of book kate clouding my judgement, edwina would have been my favourite character. girl is so sweet and kind and in the show she loved anthony and thought he loved her. actually edwina might be my fave this season.

Having a crush on your boss is embarrassing. Inappropriate. Wrong. Especially when your boss is Anthony Bridgerton, the most insufferable man on the planet whom you actively despise.
What does Kate have to say on the matter?
~
Kate doesn’t know how it started.
Kate Sheffield did not like her boss. She actively despised her boss, Anthony Bridgerton, and he despised her. It was like a hobby. Her hatred for him was like a pet, like Newton, her gorgeous corgi, that she tended to and nurtured by making Bridgerton’s life as difficult as possible.
Except, something had changed.
She still despised him, she hadn’t gone completely insane-expect, that loathing went from pure loathing to...loathing with a side of oh, Anthony Bridgerton looks good in that suit today.
She now noticed things like when he got a haircut. His chestnut hair had been cut sharp, there was still a bit of height on the top but it was shaven quite tight around his ears.
He looked good.
Really good.
She wasn’t a teenager anymore. She was an adult. A 29 year old adult with a degree. A nice apartment. She even had house plants she managed to keep alive.
She shouldn’t have crushes like this.
Especially on him.
She didn't. Nope. She couldn't. Kate Sheffield did not have a crush on Anthony Bridgerton.
It wasn't possible.
He was just on her mind a lot, she tended to stare at him quite a bit and she may have a new routine of stalking his social media on a daily basis.
So, to conclude, she definitely did not have a crush on Anthony Bridgerton.
It was probably some type of illness. She could have an underlying cold coming on that deluded her into thinking Anthony Bridgerton was good looking and looked really good in expensive suits and his gym gear when it came into the office late every Wednesday after a personal training session in the morning.
Oh God.
It had gotten to the point where it was affecting her work.
Like right now.
She should be working on her mountain of paperwork sitting on her desk, but instead, she was watching Bridgerton stretch through his office glass windows. His office was parallel to hers on the top floor of Bridgerton & Family group building. It was the headquarters of the decades old Bridgerton & Family hotel group. Kate was the head of finance for their United Kingdom group, specifically dealing with approving budgets and projects. She had qualified as an accountant when she was 24 and had moved up from there.
She could see his white shirt, which probably cost more than her rent and was never wrinkled, slowly rise above his waist as he stretched his arms. She could see the outline of his pelvis, and the tanned skin he must have got from his recent work trip to Barbados. His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, which showed off his forearms quite nicely. When did he get muscular?
The phone rang, making her jump and resulting in her reusable coffee cup spilling all down her white blouse.
“Shit!”
“All okay?” Sophie, her assistant, popped her head in.
“Just a coffee spill, thanks Sophie.” Kate said, sighing as she grabbed her blazer and buttoned it up, which covered the brown stain on her chest.
“I just sent you the proposal from Anthony!” Sophie called through the door. Sophie Beckett had been Kate’s incredible assistant for a year now. She was a few years younger than Kate, and she was working to put herself through university. Kate dreaded the day she lost her, but also signed her up for company funded courses as Sophie would go far in life and Kate couldn’t wait to see what she achieved.
“Cheers!” Kate shouted back, sitting down at her desk and opening up her email. Her eyes scanned the email and the proposal, and her stomach dropped as her chest filled with fury.
“That motherfucker,” Kate spat, shoving herself away from her desk as she stormed towards Anthony Bridgerton’s office, ready to commit murder.
Gregory, his assistant and younger brother, wasn’t at his desk. She had checked Bridgerton’s work calendar and it was clear, so he wasn’t with a client. She didn’t bother knocking.
That was her first mistake.
“Bridgerton, I don’t know if you were dropped on your head as a child-“
Her voice caught in her throat. His office was occupied by two other men, who had heard every single word she had just said.
That was her second mistake.
“Oh! I am so sorry," Her cheeks flushed with red mortification and she wanted the ground to swallow her whole. "I can come back-”
Anthony sat behind his desk, smugly beaming at her as she flushed in embarrassment. “Ah, Kate. Charming as always. I was waiting for you to storm in and annoy me today. Have you met my brothers? This is Benedict and Colin,” He gestured to the two men sitting in front of him.
“The famous Kate Sheffield,” Benedict extended his hand, grinning at her as he stood up. “It is an honour to meet you.”
“We’ve heard so many great things,” Kate raised an confused eyebrow at Colin as he stood up and spoke, shaking his hand as well. “From Gregory. We’re big fans of your daily torment of our dear older brother.”
“He definitely was dropped, by the way,” said Colin, grinning cheekily at Anthony who scowled at him. “Mother would never admit to it, but it would explain a lot.”
Kate laughed at him as Anthony scowled. “The chances of you getting the travel money you wanted are looking incredibly low, dearest brother,” said Anthony, narrowing his eyes at his Colin. “What did you want, Sheffield? I’m busy.”
There was a knock at the door just as Kate opened her mouth to retort, and Sophie popped her head in the doorway. “Excuse me for interrupting,” She said, looking at Kate. “Kate, there’s an important phone call waiting for you. Hi Anthony.”
"Hey, Sophie," said Anthony, pleasantly smiling at her which made Kate glare at him in disgust. Sophie and Bridgerton liked each other. Sophie had said on more than one occasion that he wasn't as bad as Kate made him out to be, and Kate usually threw a pen at her.
“Thank you, Sophie,” She smiled at her assistant, before turning around back to Bridgerton and putting the proposal on his desk with the word ‘DENIED’ scribbled across it in red sharpie. “I don’t want to see this proposal on my desk again. I don't feel like denying it for a fourth time.”
Benedict had turned around and was staring at Sophie, and Anthony rolled his eyes. This was one of their new arguments, that had been going on for a few weeks over a hotel design proposal that Anthony desperately wanted and Kate wouldn’t approve under any circumstances.
“Your wants aren’t really my concern, Sheffield,” Anthony said, his tone dismissive. “It’s an excellent proposal-”
Kate snorted. “It’s an obnoxious, reckless, extremely over the top hotel proposal that is not going to happen just to boost your ego. The Board would never agree to it and I certainly won’t.”
“We’ll see about that,” He smirked at her, but his eyes were glaring at her. “The Board are very fond of me. I can be very persuasive.”
“You need finance clearance and-oh. Who in finance has that authority?” She tilted her head slightly, before looking back at him to smirk right back at his smug face. “That’s right, me.”
“Who is CEO of the company and whose name is on the company?” Anthony retorted, furrowing his brows before smirking at her. “That’s right,” He mimicked her, “Me.”
“Does this happen often?” Benedict asked, amused as his head flicked between Kate and Anthony.
Gregory Bridgerton, who was eating a packet of crisps, appeared at the doorway and joined the conversation. “Everyday.”
“Every single day,” Sophie added in agreement, smirking slightly which faded as her cheeks turned crimson when she caught Benedict’s eye, quickly looking away.
“No it does not!” Both Kate and Anthony said at the same time.
Kate shook her head in frustration, “I have to go. If you email me that proposal again, I will stamp it once again with DENIED and hammer it onto your door until the message gets through your thick skull.”
“I am your boss, Sheffield,” said Anthony, his tone rather sharp. “You can’t talk to me like that.”
“Oh, forgive me,” Kate said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Should I write it down so you will actually understand what I’m saying?”
Anthony glared at her furiously, pushing himself up with his fists. “You can shove it up your-”
“So lovely to meet you both,” said Kate, interrupting Anthony’s insult loudly as she smiled at his laughing two brothers before walking out of the room, Sophie at her heels.
It was no way to talk to her boss, he was right, but they had long passed the proper etiquette of employer and employee relationships. They regularly insulted and shouted at each other, whether it was in person, over text or on the phone, and it just sort of became what they did. It somehow worked, as they worked well together and the company was making its highest profits to date.
Kate sat at her desk, her heart thumping in her chest. What was she thinking? She did not like that man. He infuriated her. She grabbed her jacket on the back of her chair and quietly screamed into it, then took a deep breath before answering the phone. “Edwina? Is everything okay? Is it Mary? Is it Newton?”
“Relax, Kate,” Her sister said, with amusement in her voice. “I had to say it was an emergency for you to answer during work. It is technically an emergency.”
“Not funny,” Kate mumbled, resting her cheek against her desk and putting the phone on speaker. “What’s wrong? Is everything okay?”
Kate heard her sister swallow before biting the bullet. “I need you to come to this charity gala tonight.”
“No.”
“Kate-”
“No!”
“My date just bailed on me for Paris fashion week. I can’t go alone. It would be so embarrassing. He’s already been photographed with some Russian model this morning,” Her sister’s voice broke slightly. “Please, Katie.”
Edwina was her younger sister by four years, and she was a famous supermodel. She had been scouted when they were walking down Oxford Street, and it had been runways, magazines and brand deals for Edwina ever since. Kate would do anything for her sister, especially when she pleaded with her, even if that thing made Kate want to set herself on fire.
Actually, she probably would prefer having a civilized conversation with Anthony Bridgerton than go to one of Edwina’s events. That’s how much Kate hated them.
She groaned. “Fine, but two hours top. I will choose what I wear and if you try to set me up, I will leave.”
“Thank you, thank you, thank you! “ Her sister squealed to the phone. “Be at mine at six! Do not be late! I love you.”
“I love you too, but I want you to know at this very moment, I really despise you,” Kate said as she heard her sister chuckle before hanging up. Excellent. She hated Edwina’s events. She had been to many of Edwina’s parties, galas and events, which involved Kate trailing behind her famous sister who everyone cooed and praised and only ever acknowledged Kate with a “Oh! I didn’t know you had a sister!” after Edwina introduced her.
As if her day couldn’t get any worse.
She heard a buzz, and then Sophie’s voice over the intercom. “Can I get you anything?”
Kate groaned. “The will to live.”
“How about a milkshake?”
She lifted her head off her desk slightly, perking up. “Please. Chocolate with extra crème. I’m feeling fragile.”
“Of course, I’ll go right away,” Sophie spoke, hesitating slightly before continuing. “Anthony has just sent an invite for the hotel proposal presentation with the Board in a few weeks. Talktoyoulaterbye!”
Kate’s head snapped up off her desk, “What?” She spat out, fury filling her veins and she twisted her neck towards his office. He was looking right at her, smirking like the devil himself, and he had the audacity to wave.
Kate’s middle finger waved right back.
