"i had not expected it myself either, but the fete helped me see that there are many manners that are not simply black and white but grey. i believe a part of me already knew that prior to today, but it is definitely a nice reminder." edwina nods, chuckling softly. her mother's answer causes her smile to grow wider. edwina believes she can discern the difference between her mother's true smile and the smile she puts on to assuage any worries, and this smile felt genuine. "i am glad, for i long to see you happy. forgive me if i speak out of turn, mama ... regardless of the past, this is your home as well and you deserve to feel comforted by its surroundings."
❝ illuminating ? ❞ she questions softly, though the smile does not leave her face, simply curious at her youngests choice of words. ❝ i did very much so, my sweet. i've seemed to forget what events are like here. ❞

merely seeing the smile on her mother's face is enough to pull a smile onto her lips. although her initial hesitation in returning to london, her mother seemed to be settling in well and for that, edwina was ceaselessly happy. "i did, indeed," she replied. "it was illuminating, to say the least," she added before asking. "and you, mama? did you enjoy the day?"

the sweetest of smiles dusted over aged features, dark eyes warm as they gazed upon her youngest. ❝ and did you enjoy yourself at the fete, my sweet ? ❞ she questioned lightly, knowing that having given her daughters space to enjoy themselves, she lost knowledge on their doings but she trusted them explicitly and knew kate would keep a watchful eye on edwina.

"And I you." She replied with a smile. It was such a relief to finally discuss the matters that had plagued her. For a moment, Edwina feared that she had lost her friend, but now that they were here, she was confident that their friendship could weather any storm. "Thank you," she replied, genuinely touched by the statement. "I did not expect to grow so attached this quickly. It is truly wonderful." Although she and Friedrich were courting, there was no assurance that the prince would not fall for another during that time. His charm made the scenario all too likely, Edwina thought. "Indeed, it has been far too long since I have seen my sister this happy" she smiled, "though, I do dare say that she is still rather stubborn," she chuckled, head tilting slightly in thought, "stubbornly smitten, perhaps?"

Edwina considered what was said for a moment and nodded tentatively. “I do not believe it matters if that person is a gentleman or a lady,” she replied, only loud enough for Agnes to hear. “Love is the only thing that matters. It is so difficult to come across true, genuine love in this world and you may never know when it can be taken from you. To that end, it may be difficult but I hope that nothing prevents you from pursuing whoever your heart races for.” She concluded, reading from her friend’s expression that she was finished discussing the topic. Especially here and now. “You have?” She asked almost as if it were a reflex, her spirit lifting with the discussion. “I—” She began with a smile, suddenly feeling rather bashful as she thought of the prince. “—I believe I am. He is goodness and kindness itself. It is still strange to believe that he has chosen me.” She nodded eagerly at the mention of her sister’s upcoming nuptials. “Indeed, I will pass on your congratulations. I am exceedingly happy, as is she which is … all I have wished to see for years.”
She was eternally grateful for her friendship with Edwina. She was strong minded, and caring and it was something she needed. She needed someone who understood her, and in honesty, she appeared to understand her more than she did herself. “Thank you, Edwina, I truly appreciate you.” She reassured with a warm smile. She was happy for her, and the happiness she had found. She could not imagine courting a prince, or a princess for such matters -- it was royalty that required protocol, and she was not keen on such ideas. However, Prince Friedrich seemed kind and he made Edwina happy, that was all she ever wished for her. “I think you sound perfect for each other, both equally as kind.” She smiled, tilting her head. “Your sister appeared rather stubborn at first, but when in the company of the Viscount, she seems smitten.” She commented with a smile.

Edwina nodded. It seemed as though Agnes was struggling with her feelings and her understanding of what it all meant. She wished she could offer her help or advice on the matter but she had none to give. She only had reassurance and unwavering support, hopefully, it would soothe her a little. “If your heart races when they are near and you yearn for them when they are not,” she shrugged, “it sounds pretty common to me.” She offered her friend a soft smile, returning the gentle squeeze before withdrawing her hand. “Thank you, dear friend. I am ceaselessly thankful.” Her expression brightened considerably when the prince is mentioned. “I am exceptionally well, my sister will remain in London after all.” She replied, unable to stop herself from smiling. “And, the prince is quite the gentleman, indeed. We are enjoying each other’s company.” She chuckled softly. “I do hope Kate’s recent engagement means that she is kinder to him.”
Her advice was appreciated, and her warm tone was something in which Agnes had not realised she had needed. She had not spoken about it, not even with Callie, but yet her heart was struggling to come to terms with her new found feelings. “It is common, but not often with....another woman.” She swallowed hard, speaking in a hushed tone. She did not wish for passers by to overhear her. She was happy at the change of conversation, welcoming it. “It seems the prince is smitten with you, from what I have seen and heard.” She smirked, tilting her head at her. “Are you equally as smitten?” She added, brows raised in anticipation. “I hear congratulations are in order for her and the Viscount Bridgerton.” She mused with a pleased expression.

edwina smiled warmly and nodded. “i understand. feelings are complex matters, one never knows when they will appear.” although she was relieved to learn that agnes did not hold any negative feelings toward her, despite her blunder, edwina couldn’t help but note the sadness regarding the topic itself. it was difficult to discuss the matter in plain terms as they were surrounded by others who may not be as understanding, but she felt the need to make her own thoughts clear. “you did no such thing, sweet agnes,” she replied immediately to dissuade any guilt her friend felt. “you need not apologise for how you felt, for your heart is one of your greatest assets. i am certain whoever you allow into it will be endlessly grateful for the privilege.” she punctuated her sentence with a nod. “and you shall never lose me as a friend. you need not worry about that either.”
She was afraid, the perception of such feelings were often misconstrued. She felt confused, more so recently with Calliope in her life. She was thankful for good friendships such as this, whilst she tried to figure out who she truly is. “I know, but it is not your stereotypical feelings, and it’s something I am trying my best to understand.” She swallowed hard, shaking her head softly. “I am glad of that -- I am always here, if you ever need anything.” She took her hand gently, giving it a squeeze before letting it go. “How are you doing? I hear you and a certain Prince are close?”

a slight smile pulled at her lips as she moved forward to join agnes on the picnic blanket, sitting as elegantly as she could manage. “i could not pass up such an opportunity, it is an honour to have won your basket.” she took in a breath and turned to face agnes as her smile dimmed ever so slightly. “i fear that i have not been a good friend to you,” she began, “i was so consumed with my own goings on, i did not take a moment to appreciate the events happening in your life, nor did i treat your feelings witht he respect and dignity they deserved, and i would like to apologise.” she managed a soft smile, unsure if she could reach forward for agnes’ hand, “i do hope that you can forgive me, for i adore being your friend and i hope that we continue to be, for a very long time.”
she had almost forgotten about the latest issue of lady whistledown, and the revelations it had made. she was happy to have forgotten, for she may have dreaded such a reunion with edwina. she however, was thankful at the compassion the other showed to her. she did not know how she was kind about such things, something which was frowned upon, she took with grace. “my mind, is a complicated place.” she spoke honestly, hand moving to grip hers gently, a light squeeze in return, “i am not entirely sure where my head was at , that time was complex, and i want you to know you are of no fault.” she smiled warmly, tilting her head. “i am sorry for any discomfort i may have caused, and i would not wish to loose you as a friend.”

she had not expected the other to bid, and felt overly flattered that she had attracted her attention. she wished to see her again, knowing it had been some time since they had conversed, and she was sure there would be more to tell. she had noted the ladies previous attractions to a certain prince, and did not wish to pry. despite her initial infatuation with edwina, she wished her the best. she wanted her to know that she cared for her, and she hoped her bid proved she felt the same. in her basket she had a selection of pastries, some low alcohol champagne, and some fresh fruit. she only hoped this was to her liking.
"i was surprised to see you bidding." she smiled , a soft chuckle leaving her lips as she patted the blanket, signalling for her to sit beside her.

edwina’s smile more or less consumed her face upon seeing the new ring that sat on her sister’s finger. she was certain that she had not seen it before, she would have remembered such a remarkable ring had it been a part of kate’s jewellery collection. “didi—” emotions swelled as she thought of all of the different conversations that had inadvertently led to this moment. finally, it appeared that the viscount could no longer deny the absolute force of nature that was her sister. while edwina had her frustrations with the man, not even she could deny how happy he made kate and for that, she supposed she could forgive his not-so-gentlemanly actions. edwina glanced at daphne, who’s expression was much like her own, filled with glee before she turned her focus back to kate. “congratulations, i am—” she reached forward for her sister’s other hand. “there are no words to express how happy i am for you.”
since anthony's proposal , kate had been attempting to figure out a game plan in how to announce their engagement to their family . her future husband had rightfully so decided to leave the announcement in her hands and who was better than to test out their plan than with his sister and her sister ? as the eldest sharma entered the bridgerton home , a soft smile graced her lips as she nodded her head in greeting to her friend , " thank you for the invite , daphne . " it felt awfully formal for kate to refer to her friend by her last name than her first . as they took a seat in the drawing room , subconsciously , the dark haired woman begun to fiddle with the newest item that adjourned her finger . when was the best time to announce the news ? startled by edwina's words , kate gave a soft nod and a smile as she observed the other two women . " it most certainly is . it is also a lovely day to inform such friends of life changing news . " she attempted to play coy before a large grin graced her lips as she picked up the tea cup with her left hand . it was intentional as she knew both would see the ring .

"i do not see why we both cannot have a happy ending." she insisted with a smile. "even if our happy endings look different, all i wish for you is that you are happy in the end. wherever life takes you, i know that you will do well." the grin on primrose's features only made edwina's smile grow wider, if that were even possible. she was utterly giddy and there was no hiding it. however, when their conversation turned towards primrose's late father, her expression fell ever so slightly. "you are continuing his legacy in such an amazing and beautiful way." while she wished that neither one of them were acquainted with the pain of losing one's father, edwina felt that there was an unspoken understanding between the two of them, for they had both survived the unimaginable. "should you ever have cause or need for my help, please do not hesitate to ask for i am endlessly grateful to you and your store."
"well one of us has to have a happy ending, do we not?" primrose shot back kindly, "i am placing all my bets on you, little one." even standing here watching the blush spread upon the others cheeks, primrose couldn't keep her grin down. she was happy for the other truly, and if she had been in the marriage game she would have been jealous but there wasn't a jealous bone in her body. "thank you," her voice grew softer as she looked around, her heart longing to have her father walking around the corner once again. "it is quite satisfying, i thank my father everyday for starting it up and making it beautiful, it was his pride and joy and i intend to keep it going just for him," she rambled softly, "it helps to keep his memory alive."

she exhales slowly as the pressure she felt moments ago dissipates upon being pulled to her mother's side. she takes in a breath, unable to tear her gaze away from the serene night sky. "that appa would approve of prince friedrich ... he would think him a kind gentleman, one who will care for me as much as i care for him, and we will be happy for the rest of our days." she turns to face her mother and offers her a gentle smile. "—do i dare believe the stars?"
❝ oh my sweet girl. ❞ she coos softly, taking her daughters hand and pulling her into her side. it was quiet, the stars their only light tonight and she was quick to wrap an arm around her. ❝ and what do the stars tell you, my love. ❞ she questions curiously, turning her eyes on the younger girl, part of her still wishing for their home in the small moments.

amelie couldn’t contain her smile at the other woman’s response, a brightness lighting her eyes as she nodded, teeth scraping down on her lower lip. somehow it had seemingly missed the watchful eyes of lady whistledown, but that she was grateful for. “i have not.” she admitted, her smile fading slightly. “i….i have avoided him in all honesty. the social paper spoke of a woman he has been with since we last saw one another.” she admitted, her voice hesitant as he spoke. “it seems as though she is in the ton too…and i fear what that might mean.” she didn’t want to become some sort of conquest, and though arthur did not seem like the man to treat her as such, she had to be wary - for her familys sake.
edwina had been under the impression that all would be well between the pair, for they both seemed to have feelings for one another and an undeniable bond that could not be damaged by others. however, upon hearing that arthur had been involved with another woman of the ton, she isn’t sure how to respond. it was certainly a surprise. “people do all manner of strange things in their time of grief, dear amelie,” she began, a little less confidently as edwina attempted to come to terms with the fact that she may be out of her depths. she had always known the situation was complex, but she hadn’t imagined it being this complex. especially considering the pair still felt for each other. “it may not mean anything, but i understand your hesitation ... i was not aware that arthur— does this change anything for you? do you still wish that he will be your husband?”

the little amount of time edwina had spent in the presence of the bridgerton family is apparent to her now as she entered their home. there were many portraits of the family and while she had seen these faces around the ton, and had even spoken to a few on occasion, she couldn't help but feel as though she ought to make more of an effort to get to know them all. especially now that her sister was involved with the viscount. from her interactions with them, they seemed to be lovely and inviting people. she was certain that it would be no chore to be around them. "thank you for the invitation, miss bridgerton." she offered with a gentle nod upon entering the drawing room, arm linked with her sister. her eyes followed daphne's hand as she relinquished her sister's arm, moving forward to the seating area. she chuckled politely at the playful jab daphne made against her brother. "it is a wonderful selection," she turned to glance at her sister. although she seemed well enough, there was something different about kate, but edwina could not put her finger on what exactly. "it is such a lovely day to spend with friends, is it not?" she asked, her gaze moving between her sister and daphne.
after exchanging pleasantries and greetings, daphne led the sharma sisters into the drawing room for tea and conversation. when she turned around to face the pair once more, her gaze fell on the new ring that adorned miss kate sharma's finger. it was a ring she would recognise anywhere. she had spent many hours of her youth admiring the ring and begging to hear her parents' beautiful love story, despite having heard it many times previously. all conscious thought stopped, unable to think about anything except the ring. this could only mean one thing — her eldest brother had made his intentions with miss kate sharma clear before it was too late. finally. pride swelled in her chest at the mere thought of the conversations she shared with anthony regarding the eldest sharma. her predictions were right and now she would inherit two wonderful sisters. "please," she said, trying to contain her sheer excitement as she gestured towards the seating area and plates of food. "help yourself to whatever you like, i requested a selection but if colin returns home, we will require much more food."

@scandalsmade asked: ❛ you shouldn’t be out here by yourself. ❜
a soft smile tugs at her lips as she turns to face the familiar voice. "apologies, mama." she reaches forward for her mother's hand, "i do not wish to worry you." she takes in a breath and steps forward, feeling the chill of the night air for the first time tonight. "i wanted to consult the stars." with her appa on her mind, she redirects her glance back up to the sky. her mind is full of unanswered questions and while she sought comfort in the stars, it was not enough to satiate her curiosity.
