a zero escape ficlet

Your name is Aoi Kurashiki. Ten years ago, your sister died. You tried to fix that one year ago but something went wrong. You lost and she's still dead. On a whim—a snail stops in your path—you visit this science symposium in America—you never went back to Japan because it hurt too much to go home without her—and see this brick shithouse man—or he would be if he didn't look like he hadn't been eating or sleeping, his face drawn and scarecrow thin, his clothes hanging off of him, his eyes as dead as yours—standing next to your sister.

He calls them GAULEMS. He says he based her—not your sister, Echo, model GTF-AM-E-305—off of someone he knew. You ask him how, when, at what point. He looks like you struck him. He says "She and I cohabited together" which is a lie. He says "I didn't know she was dead until I woke up here" which makes no sense. He says "Forty-five years from now, in a timeline that will not happen, she and I will have hosted a game on the moon" which hurts to hear. He says "Do you know who Zero is?" and you do.

Its not fair. "No," he says, "it's not". She was supposed to live. "And the world was supposed to end. or," he adds, "I was supposed to help stop it from ending." Why are you alive when she isn't? "I don't know," and something in his voice makes you believe he's just like you. "Her name is Phi," he says, "and she didn't make the jump with me. or maybe I made the wrong jump." Wrong turn at Albuquerque. "That would be my luck." His laugh feels empty.

Echo hurts to be around and he knows this so she isn't nearby when you talk with him (you talk a lot). You tell him about the Nonary Game and Hongou and Light and Clover. You tell him about Junpei ("Tenmyouji?" and you're more sad than surprised he's been—will be?—in more than one. Nobody deserves that, not even you) and Hazuki and Seven and losing. You tell him about fire and nine years of your life. He tells you about forty-five and the moon and a pandemic.

You grieve together for other timelines.

ah. so. this is a little ficlet for Sheep's (@natsukishinomiyaswife) fic series Into the Yumeverse! i know i already drew art for it but the idea couldn't leave my head and i didn't think i could execute it as well with art. hope this is okay dhgfjgjjfjg

Lysander would love it if the universe would stop putting him in situations. He has had enough situations for all his days. There must be people out there who felt that their lives were boring and nothing interesting ever happened to them — Lysander would gladly donate some of his situations to their cause! 

His current situation was this: he was sitting on the grass in the courtyard with Rook, which wouldn't be out of the ordinary if not for the fact that the universe Lysander currently resided in was some weird version of Twisted Wonderland moved slightly to the left (Twister Wonderland? No. That was awful). 

A version with a completely different magicless human girl thrown into the chaos (Lydia, who by all accounts seemed like a sweetheart), without Lysander’s beloved Ramshackle or even more beloved awful cat-beast-son.

Now the first chaos seemed to settle down a bit and so, with a lot of blushing and stumbling around, Lysander had explained to Rook the gist of the relationship the two of them had back in Lysander’s universe.

Rook seemed to react to the information the same way he reacted to every other curiosity that caught his attention; he asked questions and listened intently, and waxed poetically about whatever Lysander had said.

“Ah, what a beautiful tale. I hardly ever imagined somebody would be able to capture my heart,” Rook said. He was looking at Lysander with the same burning curiosity as back when they had first started talking — he was assessing Lysander, almost trying to see through him.

Maybe Rook really couldn’t imagine how he could ever end up with somebody like Lysander. Maybe—

Lysander stopped the thought before he could ever properly formulate it. It was too silly to even entertain, an echo of insecurities that Lysander should’ve been long past. If there was one thing that he had learned from their relationship, it was that Rook never did anything if he didn’t want to. If they were together, that was only because for Rook, it was the most right thing to do.

“I know,” Lysander replied, smiling. Suddenly, he became pointedly aware of the strangeness of their situation. Just this once, it was Lysander who knew so much about Rook, while Rook was still trying to make a judgment call on Lysander.

Lysander’s smile grew bigger. Oh, it seemed like such a silly thing to do — he really shouldn’t be playing tricks on people or mess with their reactions. But… Rook was always teasing him, maybe it was time to finally take revenge.

Maybe the saying was true — when in Rome, you had no other choice but to do as Romans did.

Heart pounding in his ribcage, Lysander raised his head. “You know what else I know?” he asked, and before Rook could reply, he went on: “You named your first arrow Salamander because it was the first animal you’ve caught.”

As stupid as Lysander felt at that moment, he couldn’t deny the sense of satisfaction that curled up in his chest seeing Rook’s eyes widen in surprise

“And,” Lysander continued. “You used to eat poisonous plants as a kid so you would get immune to them. Your biggest scar is on your left hip; you tried to sew the wound by yourself, but it went badly. You used to not be able to fall asleep without a plush lion.”

He watched Rook’s expression slowly turn from surprise to curiosity to delight.

“My! What a curious little flower you are! Maybe I can see how you have managed to ensnare my affections. But, Monsieur Fleur, you should know that it is dangerous to show all your knowledge so freely. You never know how somebody could take it.”

Lysander’s cheeks turned pink. “Who said that’s all my knowledge?” he replied, with more bravado than he expected of himself. “And I trust you, even in a different universe.”

No— Wait— Why did he even say that?! That was… bad. Way too forward. Way too… everything. Regret washed over Lysander immediately.

Overcome with a profound feeling of shame and embarrassment, Lysander hid his face in his hands — he could feel just how hot his cheeks were.

“Non, Monsieur Fleur, don’t curl up your petals now! As foolish as it might be, I am honoured to have your trust.”

Lysander hid his face even more, his hair falling to the sides like curtains. “No! I am not talking about this anymore! One more word and I’m running away!”

He could hear Rook’s laughter. “Ah, then I will just have to chase after you. Shouldn’t you know I don’t give up so easily?”

Ah. Well. Lysander just couldn’t win, could he?

Jeff is one of my favorite characters and I think we should start a post of all our favorite Jeff headcanons. He and Freak get left out in almost every Eddie-centric fic I read, with his "best friend" being either Gareth or Chrissy, and I'm tired of it. Jeff is wonderful. Here's my hc's:

- Jeff and Eddie have been best friends since middle school. They started CC and Hellfire together.

- they went to the Snowball together and rigged the bubble machine to spew bubbles during the slow dance songs. The dance had to end early and Jeff and Eddie never got caught

- Jeff's parents loves Eddie. They used to have sleepovers at each other's place almost every weekend.

- Jeff was the first person Eddie came out to. Jeff tried to be surprised and "that's great, man, thanks for telling me!" But Eddie saw right through that.

- Eddie is afraid of geese and spiders. Jeff thinks this is fucking hilarious.

- post-Vecna, Jeff is the one Eddie reconnects with first. Eddie tells him everything, despite the NDAs and Steve's warnings. Jeff believes him, because he knows there's wacky shit going on in Hawkins, and he's seen Eddie's wounds.

- they have that kind of friendship that nothing can break. Even if they don't see or talk to each other for years, because Life Happens and people lose touch, they'll always have part of themselves carved out for their best friend.

Ok, that's all I got for now, and sorry for the long ask! I just love Jeff so much and he (and Freak, too, because Freak gets ignored because of fatphobia) deserves just as much love and attention as Gareth gets.

I think with Unnamed Freak things are a bit different bc, yaknow, he doesn't have a name. For me at least that makes me hesitant to write about him so I don't wanna go as far as to say it's all bc he's fat (even though I'm not gonna deny that that probably also plays a part in how popular he is in this fandom urgh). Anyway, yes this fandom certainly does Jeff dirty. I think it's this gross combination of racism and people copying a lot from already existing stories, characterizations and headcanons without much critical thinking of their own (which baffles me, if you're creative enough to write a story please use that creativity for some originality ffs). Anyway, this is gonna turn into a rant again can you tell I'm still annoyed? so let's turn to something more positive now, like my headcanons for our beloved Jeff:

He was the first person in Hawkins (after Wayne obviously) that Eddie got close to. For Jeff it was kinda the same, being a black, nerdy boy in this town had been very isolating for him and Eddie was his first real friend.

Unnamed Freak made their duo into a trio a bit later. All the others in the group (including Gareth) were Eddie's "lost little sheepies" who he sought out to protect. This means that Jeff and Unnamed Freak are the only people who don't borderline worship Eddie but see him (and love him) for who he is including all his flaws. They're also the only ones not afraid to call him out on his bullshit.

Jeff's mom is really cool. Her name is Pauline and she's not like Jeff at all (she was a cheerleader in high school). Despite their differences they love each other a lot. (Jeff's mom is actually heavily featured in one of the fics I wrote so I got her all fleshed out lmao)

He has two little twin sisters. They're friends with Erica, one of them is one of her friends we meet in the mall in s3. He has this typical hate-love relationship with his sisters: they fight a lot, but at the end of the day, he would die for them.

HE'S BISEXUAL

While he can't wait to get out of Hawkins and to a place that'll be more accepting of him, he doesn't want to move too far away from his family.

He's the most loyal friend in the world, 100% a ride-or-die kinda guy

While he does love metal a lot, his guilty pleasure is Tina Turner

6. Who were the first people to find out about the engagement? How did they react?

I actually have a whole fic about how daiggie got engaged (I will post it sometime on my other account), so I think I have it kinda figured out (even if I didn't write the part where they tell people)! The first person to know they were engaged was Ruggie's grandmother bc when Ruggie proposed Daisy was visiting their house 😭😭 so they told her right away<3 I feel like Daisy would video chat (Ruggie helped she still sucks at technology) Ace, Deuce and Grim (don't ask me how that last one went idk) and told them too🥺🥺🥺 ofc Trein also was one of the first people to know bc at the time Trein let Daisy stay at his house since she was without anywhere to go after NRC, and he's basically a father to her already! All of them were super happy about the engagement and Deuce and Ace kept bugging Daisy to make them her 'best men' even though she's a lady😭 but who cares!!! Grim was the flower cat and he was super duper happy<33 also Trein gave Ruggie the "if u hurt my daughter I'm breaking ur neck talk as a father should" /j

19. What was the ceremony like? Any highlights?

BRO I THINK ABOUT THIS WAYYYY TOO MUCH IM UNFORTUNATELY INSANE– if u wanna have a visual representation of how daiggie's wedding went. Here. That's it.

Basically it was all super fun and cute and then when they were getting out of the church it just😭 started getting super windy and super rainy😭 it was a disaster all the decorations flew away the clothes were ruined they were soaking wet and had to get inside a building to continue the festivities but daiggie were having A LOT OT FUN. It was great for them they loved it– Daisy's dress and Ruggie's suit was thankfully saved bc of Daisy's great friend Malleus Draconia (maybe) but it was insaneeee but hey!!! They were having fun<3 also my friend @selfinserttothestars told me that when it rains during weddings it's a sign of good luck😭😭 so😭😭

Hi! You seem quite knowledgeable in this, so I though you might be the right person to ask: I'm trying to find some nice heart pirates fics with them as family doing shenanigans/general stuff. Most of the fics I've found in the Heart Pirates tag in ao3 revolve around a ship involving law and the hearts are just background characters who barely do anything, which isn't what I'm looking for. Do you have any recommendations? (I've already read some of your works, but if you want to recommend those that's good too!)

Platonic Heart Pirates Fics Rec List

Wow! huge compliment.

Yeah, I wouldn't classify myself as a Hearts Pirates writer, but I do write them. I think my best characterisations of them are in my multi-chaptered works, but they're super dark, and the Hearts aren't the focus (but boy do they shine when they get the chance!).

You've probably come across my Bepo's one shots and drabble collection. There's a few shippy pieces in there, but they're clearly marked. Most are just the crew, although focus on the main four. This was also done for the Hearts' Pirates Week, so covers all named crew members (up to that point). This one shot is surprisingly popular: Dark like the North Blue Sea (aka The Sea-Hill you Die On), and you might have come across the Straw Hat and Heart Pirates crews intermingling in this fic featuring Bepo and Chopper. I'm also guessing that you probably saw the piece I wrote for the op summer festival zine: Sun Path Ozoni. An earlier version of that is in Bepo's collection! There's also Bepo's Beptober, which features everyone, but I wouldn't really say explores them in depth!

Dragon_in_a_Cypress_swamp has 6 amazing Hearts & Trafalgar Law fics too. Really good (I haven't read all, but what I have read just blows me away).

This is not a place of honor by Hyperbolic Reverie (I'm not guaranteeing that all the fics are sweet). And you've probably come across

the devil knows how to row by fab_ia, is set in Law Novel land, but with flashbacks to Law's time with the Donquixote Family. It's a work in progress. But very good. The author is keats on twitter, and I think one of the guest writers for the up coming Hearts zine. Their AO3 actually has a few Hearts' fics I want to pick through.

Dunno if this counts, but the Scrubs AU with Penguin and Shachi as Law's interns, and Bepo as a trusty nurse is both hilarious and poignant. @thegrimshapeofyoursmile

Cal14's recently been uploading some of their tumblr pieces.

@slashseeker (not getting their blog come up) has some platonic stuff on their AO3 page (their slash is pretty good too though!).

You know it kind of sucks that we as a fandom have gotten so caught up in Mike being a brat that he often doesn't really get to have adult mentors the way others do because he's "mean" to Steve/Will/Max/whoever.

Like, arguably Eddie should be a mentor to Mike as well as Dustin, even if they aren't as close - Mike obviously respects him a lot and looks up to him, modelling himself and his style after him. (Which is significant! Because historically Mike is probably the Party member aside from El who most looks like his parents dictate what he wears.) But instead we get fic after fic of Mike being "Eddie's least favorite" or him straight up disliking him because Mike lashed out at Steve.

I'm not going to deny that Mike is a brat and can be insensitive at times, particularly with Will. (Though some of that insensitivity does just come from the fact that he isn't aware of the crush Will has on him? Idk why people expect him to know that.) But he's also severely traumatized. He still obviously cares about his friends, and despite his issues with keeping properly in contact with Will (and in a different way, El) still makes efforts to reach out to them when they are in the same place.

Idk when writing the tags for my lrb I was just thinking about the fact that arguably more fics should have Eddie at least more sympathetic Mike considering he is one of his "sheepies" and also how much Mike clearly looks up to him. Makes me sad because you know Mike probably wants his approval more badly than he's wanted approval from an older teen/adult figure in a long time!

What's your favorite personality traits of Eddie and Chrissy as characters? Do u think their actors brought out something special while playing them?

So Eddie and Chrissy--part of what makes them such an engaging ship is they both fill 80's tropes and simultaneously subvert them.

Chrissy is a popular cheerleader, yes, but she is also kind. Grace said that one of the reasons the Duffer brothers cast her was she was the only actress to play Chrissy as "sweet", which is a really interesting choice. Chrissy is soft-spoken, she's nervous, but once Eddie is able to crack open her shell, she's not afraid to let loose open-mouthed giggles. She is vulnerable with him, which intrigues Eddie. So to have the popular cheerleader character be popular and quiet and haunted is just a really interesting angle to take.

When we first meet Eddie, he is bombastic and loud and frankly aggressive. When I was first introduced to him, I remember being worried he would beat up Dustin and Mike if they did not find a sub for Lucas (watch how Eddie kind of manhandles them--Dustin and Mike are very clearly intimidated by him too). And we're supposed to feel that way about Eddie.

Because in the forest scene, it is revealed that oh wait, actually Eddie is a giant fucking DORK. Yeah, he deals drugs and is head of the Hellfire Club and wears leather and chains and shreds on guitar--but he's also a goddamn dork who will fling himself off a picnic table to make a nervous girl giggle, who will pretend to be concerned if there are leaves in his hair because she's laughing, finally, she's no longer scared of him--deep down, Eddie doesn't want her to be scared of him. I don't think he wants anyone to be scared of him, except perhaps the jocks, so he can protect his sheepies effectively.

So this twist on the bad-boy/sweet girl and loser/cheerleader so common in 80's films is really wonderful to watch and draw and write fic about!

i was rereading light my way and i'm just curious about how you decided to write eddie as having difficulty forming closer bonds that go beyond doing shared activities together. also in your rockie fic you mentioned eddie never having plans except on certain days. i keep seeing ppl portray the cc boys/older hellfire members as being v close w eddie, and ppl mentioning the list of eddie's friends dustin and max were calling when they were trying to find him as proof that eddie is a social butterfly/v extroverted. i don't disagree but i'm curious about how you decided to characterize him that way.

so i know i'm like the odd man out in this and it's entirely just like my own opinion/creative choice like i don't think i'm any more Right than other people. just like to preface my justification. so anyway there are a few different reasons why i went that route!

personally i had a lot of good friends in high school who i literally only hung out with during theatre classes and rehearsals. while we spent a lot of time together and considered each other good friends, we didn't often hang out outside of those activities, and i think that's pretty common as a teenager in school, you know? eddie in particular seems to self-identify as an outsider and he emphasizes hellfire club as a place for "lost little sheepies," which makes me think that maybe he started/joined corroded coffin and/or hellfire specifically to find and keep friends because he struggled to do so otherwise. also, being a DM requires a lot of planning time alone, and so does learning sick-ass guitar solos almost immediately after an album drops, so i think eddie probably spends most of his non-club time either by himself or dealing.

the sheer number of friends they check on when searching for eddie makes me think that eddie is the kind of guy who's outgoing and has a lot of casual friendly acquaintances, but very few people who are actually close to him. in episode one we primarily see eddie with hellfire/corroded coffin, and he is just flat-out performing the whole time. he isn't just having lunch with his buddies in the cafeteria scene, he's holding court. he's putting on a show! it's quite a stark contrast to how he behaves when the group finds him in the boathouse and for the rest of s4, and later in the season we see a far more self-deprecating and unsure eddie. while i do think eddie and the hellfire guys are friends who genuinely like each other, i just don't think they're like... super close. i personally get the impression that eddie is always performing around them, probably because he thinks that being funny and outrageous is What Makes Them Like Him and that he's gotta keep it up or he'll lose them. the fact that he chose to hide out alone in the boathouse indicates to me that he doesn't feel safe enough with any of his friends to have gone to them for help. he didn't think that any of his friends would believe him or have his back, and i think that if he were really close with the hellfire guys, he probably would have gone to one of them first, because i think he was very freaked out by being alone after chrissy's death.

also, on a more practical level, in light my way that just served the story far better. i had zero desire to make up personalities for eddie's friends and write them interacting with the rest of the gang, especially because it would limit my ability to let el just exist as el and let the characters potentially reference Strange Things if they wanted. but of course if they're really close friends of eddie's it would make sense for them to be at his birthday party. so it was just easier to go with the idea that they typically hang out at school and predetermined meetings for hellfire/corroded coffin and that their friendship is relatively surface-level. it also served the emotional arc of the story about eddie finding a sense of belonging! in the rockie fic i put less thought into it, but eddie's hardass nature about lucas missing hellfire in episode one makes me think he's very big on sticking to plans and schedules, and in the rockie fic universe he's become quite good friends with steve and robin, so they can assume with relative certainty that if he's not doing hellfire or with his band he'll be down to hang with them. i imagine they hang out most of the time anyway.

Phoenix gave the man on the witness stand a dry, cutting smile and began to speak, prompting Maya to continue to echo him.

"Those names and more are all on record in the Fey & Co. Law Office. There's also clearly recorded links between scandals, sudden loss in funds, suicides, and Bluecorp's sudden influence in their lives."

"How—?!"

"You might have taken and destroyed the evidence in the Thinker—the ones with your name directly on them—but you didn't get everything. Mia had been building this case for years. She had more evidence than you could have expected."

He looked like an insect pinned to a board. "Please—!"

"I won't release these names to the press because I don't have to. The court stenographer has already noted them down. The public gallery has heard me speak them out loud. Everyone saw you fold like a bad hand of poker. You can't hide that from anyone now."

"I'll do anything—how much?!"

"For what?" Maya asked, the first thing she said herself since Phoenix began listing the names he'd memorized.

"Defend me. You're clever, you've proven it today. Defend me in court when—"

She cut him off. "And you'll give me anything I want?"

"Anything!" The world seemed to narrow in, focusing on her and him and no one else in the world. No Prosecutor Edgeworth, no judge, no Phoenix, no gallery. Just Maya Fey and Redd White.

Just Maya Fey and her justice.

I love how in your fic, Next Tume I Fall, you kept everyone alive after the events of S4. I will cherish that forever.

I also love chrissy and el's relationship. It brings warmness to my heart how supportive she is to el. I never would've thought of them interacting, but it works so well.

I really wanted El to have a) girlfriends besides Max, and b) more of a support system than she seemed to get from her parents in canon. And I could picture Chrissy taking one look at Max and El and immediately adopting them as her own little sheepies, determined to guide them safely through high school and not let their confidence suffer the way hers did. She’d be such a great big sister!

Next chapter we’ll get to see Eddie being a great big brother, too. 😄

“You’re in a club called Hellfire,” Jeff said.
