This is actually the 3rd Cookie Run 3rd Anniversary that Meringue’s been through. And if you think my count’s off, think again. Puzzle World’s also more than 3 years old, but that anniversary (and their 4th) went silent because essentially nobody but me talks about that game. But since we’re all here, why not make a month out of it?!

Cookie & Gacha Features
❔ White Lily Cookie - Light of Freedom Nether Gacha
A theory deemed impossible because of the witnessed events from the Tower of Sweet Chaos, the fact that this skill was teased in the TUTORIAL said otherwise. Her skill does area damage that increases with every buff she has, and ensnares enemies in immobilizing vines with bonus aftereffects and extra damage once dispelled or if the target is immune. Her passive can heal and purify her entire team after getting enough debuffs, although activating the buffs gained with this passive is linked with using her skill.
🌷🏹 Silverbell Cookie - Featured Banner
One of the Faeries of the forest. His skill provides DMG Resist and healing over time that scales with buffs held by his teammates while also providing a DPS/stun debuff on enemies damaged by his skill.
Activates bonus passives when Mercurial Knight Cookie is on the same team.
🧚‍♂️🥄 Mercurial Knight Cookie - Featured Banner (Ends 3/13)
The Commander of the Silver Tree Knights. Gains new powers when using his skill. While his skill is active, he heals extra damage (plus damage relative to Max HP for Cookies) and inflicts Mercury Poisoning with each attack. His Final Strike at the end of his skill deals big damage that increases based on his targets’ stacks of Mercury Poisoning (this is damage relative to Max HP for Cookies).
His passive gives him a stack of Amalgamation every second and whenever he gets a debuff. After gaining 60 stacks, he dispels all his debuffs and enters Mercury Storm mode for temporarily increased ATK, ATK SPD, and Max HP. He can’t gain Amalgamation stacks while Mercury Storm is active.
Activates bonus passives when Silverbell Cookie is on the same team.
3rd Anniversary Deluxe Gacha
Anniversary gacha with increased odds for Super Epic+ Cookies and a guaranteed Super Epic+ Cookie every 150 pulls. Only accessible with special gacha tickets found in events and the shop.

👻 Blackberry Cookie - Buffed
Blackberry Cookie’s skill now grants an ATK SPD buff and HP Shield in addition to her existing CRIT% buff. This further cements her status as one of the best Rare Cookies in the game!
Major Update Features (Includes Part 1)
Beascuits - Adds extra bonuses to your Cookies
Today’s Bounties - Updated and organized to include new rewards.
Each boss now has a different reward… Skill Powders now stand solely with the Labyrinth Tactician!

New/Returning players have an extra, temporary bonus on top of the existing bonuses
Added 2.5x Game Speed to standard and arena battles
Cookie and Skill max level increased to 80
Level cap is reachable after achieving Kingdom level 45

Added Cancel button for Balloon Expeditions
You won’t get your Stamina Jellies back if you cancel an expedition

chasing dumb ideas from work lol

Ren’s Palace takes the form of a video game world, bright and zany.  The Shadows have their silhouettes color-coded according to difficulty, the cognitions are NPCs repeating stock dialogue--Mona pops up surprisingly often, considering he and Ren haven’t really hung out since May--and some of the logic used to progress is worthy of a click-and-point game.  Which means it’s lucky they have Futaba with them, since she’s the only Phantom Thief who understands the logic of click-and-point games.  Still, it’s such a breeze that it takes only three hours to reach the center of the stage, and Oracle complains they never even left the hand-holding tutorial.
Ren’s shadow smiles at them when they arrive, and hands Ryuji a controller for the P4Storm his parents took away from him and sold after his arrest.  “Wait--is this the Treasure?” Ryuji blurts.  “We didn’t give you a calling card, though.”
“Hmm...we did talk with him about what he thought the distortion might be, though,” Futaba muses.  “He’s the NPC who knows the most about our methods, so that might have accidentally triggered the effect.  Good thing we moved fast.”
The shadow nods at Futaba’s explanation.  “I didn’t want to give you guys too much trouble.  You’re my friends, after all.”
“Dude, you gave us no trouble at all,” Ryuji says with a laugh.  “You’re way too nice for your own good!”  Still, in this case, he’s relieved it’s not coming to a fight.  Ren’s a friend, and he hasn’t seemed all there lately--they might have curbstomped his shadow if it’d come to that, and wouldn’t that feel awful.
Ren’s shadow smiles shyly, and waves them off before disappearing in bright light.  The PT make their usual escape.  The Palace crumbles.
So does the controller in Ryuji’s hands.
-
Despite the alarm the crumbling treasure causes for the entire group, Ren seems to take his change of heart just fine, doesn’t even throw himself a week-long slumber party like Futaba did.  He stays home from school one day, Futaba reporting that he seems a bit sleepy but nothing too serious, and then the next day, Ren gives Ryuji a fist-bump and smile outside Shujin.  Ryuji grins and tackles him into a headlock.  He’s so glad the change of heart didn’t hurt Ren.  Ren’s his best friend.  The Phantom Thieves might have given Ryuji a reason to stay at Shujin and not drop out, but Ren’s pretty much an honorary Thief anyway, and he’s been running with Ryuji, and helping him deal with the track team’s problems, and he’s just so good at knowing exactly what to say to make people feel better.  Ryuji’s thrilled he could help Ren for once.
And then, days later, he gets a text from Makoto during class, which he knows is urgent because Makoto texting during class: “Ren is still logged in the MetaNav on my phone for some reason.  The location and distortion have been erased, but his name is still there.  Is anyone else seeing this?”
Yusuke starts typing.  Futaba and Ann chime in well before him that yes, they see it too.  Ryuji opens the Metanav on his phone.  Ren’s name is glaring on the screen, a partially-complete entry that shouldn’t be there at all.
“Class was that bad?” Ren asks when Ryuji trudges out of his classroom, prompting the blond to immediately shove the phone in his pocket.
“Uh, yeah,” Ryuji mutters.  “Hey, Ren, can we talk about the--uh--you-know-what?”
“The completely unsuspicious you-know-what, yes, what about it?” Ren answers, because oh good the change of heart gave him his sarcasm back.  Actually--that would be good news.  It means the change of heart worked and the Metanav’s got some random glitch.  “Let’s get off school grounds first.”
Ryuji manages to only jump a little when his phone buzzes.
When he checks, the Metanav has accepted “school” as the distortion’s location, even though the Palace was actually at the scramble in Shibuya and, more importantly, doesn’t exist any longer.
They go to Leblanc, where Shiho and Futaba are both waiting to talk to Ren as well, which helps Ryuji with the conversation ahead.  It’s...kind of hard to muddle through ‘hey, we were trying to help you with your heart, but something might have gone wrong and we don’t know what’.  It both helps and doesn’t that Ren stays calm the entire time, doesn’t get worried or pissed off that they might have screwed up.  Wouldn’t a distorted person get mad?  Wouldn’t a normal person at least be nervous?
Then again, Ren’s always had nerves of steel underneath the nerdy glasses.  It never made sense to Ryuji why he didn’t awaken to a Persona when Ryuji and Ann and Shiho all could, not until they found his Palace.  He’s got the guts for it.
Futaba openly prods Ren on how he views the school, and he shakes his head.  “This must be a glitch.  You guys have already helped me.  I feel better, and everyone else has only needed their heart changed once.  Why would I be different?”
Shiho purses her lips but then agrees.  Ryuji feels a little antsy, wants to push but also wants to trust Ren, and even if the change of heart didn’t work for some reason, his friend is pushing back now.  Ren’s not hurting anyone.  His heart is his call just like Futaba’s was hers, and even the hacker, for all her curiosity, respects that.  They gotta drop it.
But it stays on the back of Ryuji’s mind for weeks as the entry stays in place, 2/3s complete, and everyone else is worried too because they all like Ren and something does seem a little off about him--like he’s trying too hard to be normal, to convince them everything is fine--and then apparently one morning, right before class starts, Ren startles Ann by leaning over her shoulder and drily reciting: “Ren Amamiya, Shujin Academy, theater”.
The keywords work, Ren supplying them is taken as an implicit request, and there’s a good chance their calling card timer is already running just like the first time, since Ren knows how they work after tagging along for most of the first Palace and helping them with supplies for later ones.  So they go.
-
Ren’s second Palace is a theater.  It’s completely different from the video game world, with dark, muted, traditional colors, yet unmistakably Ren’s, and Makoto has to get their navigators back on task several times because Morgana and Futaba are going nuts theorizing (because who has a second Palace to begin with?).  Luckily Shiho doesn’t have much trouble leading the group through anyway.  Once again, Ren’s Palace is weirdly easy.  The Shadows aren’t color-coded any longer, but they also don’t seem to care about the Thieves as long as they don’t interrupt the show on stage.  It’s...an improv show, Ryuji thinks?  Yusuke says it might be an avant garde direction on a play.  (Ryuji has no idea what the difference would be.)  What happens is Ren’s shadow is always acting, and sometimes a cognitive audience member will leave their seat and join him.  All of the Thieves are there, even Morgana, which the cat seems touched by, plus Mishima, and Ms. Kawakami, and Ms. Chouno, and Ryuji is about to question why Ren has the hots for so many teachers when Ushimaru gets up and that thought becomes cursed, and the newspaper club girl, and that cute gardening club girl, and actually, Ryuji still thinks Ren has some kind of bias for hot girls going on here.  Even if the (former) stalker girl is pushing it.
That’s probably nothing to do with the Palace distortion though, since Ren’s interactions are always a simple back-and-forth with the cognition: they request something of him, even if it’s just to talk, and Ren obliges them admirably, or sometimes he acts as though he’s ignoring them at first, only to swoop in at the last second and give them something even better than they asked for.  It’s interesting maybe the first couple times?  Morgana stands out again because his cognition nags Ren to study and make infiltration tools, something Morgana says he’s never done, which makes sense because Ren is one of those aggravating people who never needs to study to ace exams and Shiho’s always made the infiltration tools just fine.   After Morgana, though, it just falls into a predictable pattern, and the only reason to keep watching is to see who else comes up to stage.  And once cognitive guest stars start repeating, the Thieves are out.  Every improv act has been slightly different, but the flow is so obvious that it’s become mind-numbingly repetitive anyway.
They sneak past security into the back halls and find a dressing room.  Futaba and Morgana both detect the Treasure inside.  There’s a white-and-black domino mask sitting on a vanity in a dark corner of the room that both navigators swear up and down has to be the Treasure.  It almost seems appropriate for a Thief mask.  Maybe because Ren’s seen most of the team’s?  It fits the theater setting, at least, but...
“Are we just...taking this?” Ann questions, with an uncertain look around the dressing room.  “Seriously?  His Shadow’s not even going to talk to us?”
“I would not complain about us being proper thieves and going undetected for once,” Yusuke points out.
“Okay, point, but it just...feels like I understand Ren less than I did before the video game place.”  Ann sighs.  “I thought he was just a quiet guy, but he saw part of Tokyo as a game?  Now he’s acting with everyone at school?  I wish I got what it actually meant...”
“We can ask him about it later,” Shiho reassures her.  “Right now we just have to take the Treasure.”
That suits Ryuji.  They take it.  The Palace collapses.
The mask crumbles in Shiho’s hands as soon as they reach the real world, and she makes a small noise of distress.  Morgana and Ryuji spit out the same curse in a rare moment of heartfelt unity.  Futaba, on the other hand, just whips out her phone.  “Hey-hey,” their navigator says, “Guess who doesn’t want to leave the Metanav?”
-
Ren is sympathetic with his thief friends not being able to steal a Treasure, which feels wildly inappropriate to Ryuji because it’s Ren’s heart in question here.  Ryuji thinks in his shoes, he’d be losing his mind.  Ryuji’s in his own shoes and he’s still losing his mind a little, because the only answer the group can come up with for what’s going on is that Ren’s somehow got three distortions.
No, sorry.  It’s that he has at least three.  Three may not be the magic number.  Ren doesn’t seem to think it is, anyway, because now he puts down his foot.  “I’m not hurting anyone.  I’m fine.”
“Yeah, you weren’t even down for a day like last time,” Futaba mutters, giving him such a suspicious look that Shiho nudges the girl.  Ren is their friend, and he’s been helping them be Phantom Thieves.  They’ve got no good reason to antagonize him.
Ren gives her a long, silent look before shaking his head.  “You guys should be figuring out your next target.”
They should be.
They do.
Ren helps them less with supplies this time.  Ryuji wonders if it’s because of the distortion, and then he catches himself and realizes he’s been wondering if everything with Ren is because of a distortion or not.  It’s probably not even Ren’s fault.  They’re just not talking to him about Thief business as much, since...yeah.  The only upshot might be that Morgana has been making some effort to get to know Ren better.  Because Morgana was a jerk when they first found him--he’s still a jerk sometimes, but even Ryuji would say he’s gotten a lot better--and he pretty much brushed Ren off in favor of people who were actually awakening to Personas, like everyone else.  They never really argued or anything, though, and apparently judging by Ren’s Palace...s, Ren’s fond of him, and Morgana seems to have finally realized that sometimes, making friends is its own reward, even if they can’t wield kickass Personas.  So that’s a thing, now, Shiho passing Morgana off to Ren so they can trot off and do whatever people do together when one of them is a cat (apparently watch movies, get food, fish, and just talk).
And that’s why when Morgana says “I think I know Ren’s keywords” at the start of a Phantom Thieves meeting, Ryuji blurts out “I thought you stopped being an asshole” with a disappointment so deep that it kind of surprises him, because, wow, he really had been expecting that Morgana was just trying to be nice and not obsessed about Palaces and Treasures for once, huh?
Morgana blinks at him across the table.  “I have never been an asshole,” he says, outright lying.  “Though there are a few things I could say about you--”
“Morgana,” Shiho says, heading off that argument.  She looks upset, too.  “We don’t have any reason to pursue Ren’s Treasure.  He’s not hurting anyone.  He...seems to be doing all right,” though the hesitation is audible in her voice, and quickly followed with, “and even if he isn’t, it’s his heart.  You’re not getting a unanimous vote here, and if this is why you’ve been friendlier to him lately, I... don’t know what to say, except that I thought you were better than that.”
There are two Phantom Thieves who can scold Morgana and actually make him feel ashamed: Ann and Shiho.  Sure enough, she lands a critical hit; Morgana’s ears pin back, and he nearly ducks down under the table to escape her stare before stopping himself.  “I’m not asking for a vote,” Morgana says.  “If we took his treasure it’d probably just crumble again.  But I want to check if I’m right about the keywords.  It could be critical information.”
There is a long moment of silence.   As much as Ryuji’s still pissed off at Morgana, he can’t deny being curious.  If they at least knew the keywords, even if they didn’t go in, they’d understand Ren better, right?  Though...after how the last two distortions went...
As it turns in, they go in anyway, because Makoto taps on her phone to open the Metanav, places it in front of Morgana, and when he utters “Tokyo, Metaverse,” the app responds “beginning navigation”, and--
“Fascinating,” Yusuke says.
“That’s not the f-word I’d use,” Ryuji says.
“Huh, Kaneshiro’s Palace is here,” Morgana notes, because that is indeed an effing bank flying through the sky, narrowly avoiding a blimp.  The cat continues getting down to business despite the absurdity of the situation he just launched everyone into.  “That means both that he’s seen it, and that his mental map of the Metaverse isn’t accurate.  It might be based on his most recent memory?  We never brought him in the bank, though.  What do you think, Or--”  He stops when he actually turns to Futaba and sees her face.  She’s paler than usual.  “...Oracle?  Are you okay?”
“My Palace is there,” she says, pointing in the direction where Yongen Jaya would lie.  The golden tip of a pyramid gleams over dozens of other riotously colorful, stylistically mishmashed buildings.  “How does he know what my Palace looked like?  How does he know about any of these?  There’s at least two hundred--maybe three!”
Three hundred palaces is a stupid number of Palaces for anyone to personally remember, but it’s especially stupid for a guy who doesn’t even have the Nav on his phone.
-
the idea: “if persona users simultaneously having a Palace can be justified with wildcards having multiple personas (for one to turn into a shadow while the others remain to use), what kind of shitshow would Ren create if all his Personas just--” and then ng+ shenanigans wandered in

Also I saw a review of balan wonderworld yesterday, and I haven't played the game cuz I'm poor, but like
What if, balan wonderland
What if only like 7 levels with 1 or 2 power up costumes per level
Idk if there's a tutorial level, but wouldn't it be cool if the tutorial was the hub, and at the end the boss is balan, but then that shadow the hedgehog lookin dude showed up to try and make ya player the big depressed, and balen like dances with ya to dodge ya outta the way of the dudes tendrils, n then like hugs ya before spinning ya into level one as he takes the blow
Also I seen that the game has dance sequences, and it's a missed opportunity to make Princess tutu the video game ngl
Or having more obvious theater or stage play sorta stuff, like levels behind closed curtains, the tutorial being referred to as a rehearsal, etc
Idk, I just think that'd be neat, and it's sad to hear that the game fell flat

Talentswap Tuesday is today! Please keep your eyes peeled, or she just might jump out from the shadows to give you an impromptu makeover! It’s Myth, the Former Ultimate Makeup Artist!
————————-——————————
BACKSTORY AND TALENT
When you first of her talent, you would assume Myth to be some kind of Marylin Monroe-esque social media influencer. But despite Myth’s skill in standard makeup application, Myth’s speciality lies in horror and special effects. Able to turn a person from a beauty to a beast, Myth’s makeup skills are praised by both the horror fanatic crowd and the beautician crowd. As the third daughter to an American horror movie actor and a Ukrainian beautician, Myth’s talent manages to consist of the best of both worlds. Starting out as a humble assistant at some of her father‘s movie shoots, eventually Myth garnered internet fame for her tutorials on how to give yourself extra eyes or how to turn into a vampire. She still hasn’t lost any of her spooky and impish charm, even as an adult and chaperone of Hope’s Peak’s annual Kibo-Con field trip.
——————————————————-
RELATIONSHIP
Wyre Anon, Former Ultimate Storyteller
Folks come far and wide to hear Wyre’s macabre tales that can leave even the strongest of bodyguards shaking in their boots. Myth and Wyre knew each other ever since they were little, having bonded over their shared love of horror and the macabre. And you can bet your bottom dollar that their relationship is still going strong to this very day. Myth regularly helps Wyre with their makeup to up the horror factor, usually making Wyre resemble an oni or a dragon. This fearsome duo just love teaming up to scare the other Anons.
Outfit: White face paint with black circles around their eyes and cracks painted into their face, a large purple cape held together with a skull design, a black vest and red ascot over a white dress shirt, brown pants, black heeled boots.
Anon Scar, Ultimate Jazz Singer
With her proficient skill at both vocals and instruments, Anon Scar, also known by her stage name “Guardian of Soul”, managed to revitalize the jazz genre. You’d think that with her whole demon motif along with her cool and calm behavior on stage, Scar would be able to handle Myth’s horror. But all of that talk of demons and curses is merely a facade, concealing an easily-frazzled and heavily concerned mom friend. Myth loves drawing wounds on herself and pretending to be hurt around Scar, just to see Scar’s facade break.
Outfit: A black vest with a white music note design on the back over a white tank top, black pants, black fingerless gloves, a microphone around her right ear, the scarf and boots from her original design.
Fusion Anon, Ultimate Forensic Sociologist
An expert on human behaviors, body language and social interactions, Fusion possesses an uncanny intuition and can read people like a book, making him a tough nut to crack for the more deceptive and manipulative students. Despite his creepy intuition, Fusion remains a kind-hearted, almost paternal, young man. Myth was thinking that if Fusion wasn’t so kind-hearted and she touched up on his makeup, his freakish intuition and his freakishly thin and tall body would make him the perfect horror movie monster.
Outfit: An oversized dark blue trench coat, an equally large red scarf that covers his mouth, the pants, shoes and glasses from his original design.
Fusion Anon II, Ultimate Beatboxer
Conquering rap battles after rap battles, Fusion II is famous for both her epic beatboxing skills and the equally epic roasts of her opponents. But similar to Scar, Fusion II‘s sarcastic and flippant demeanour is merely a facade. Deep down, Fusion II is a massive nerd, particularly for literature and poetry. This love for the written word can be found in many lyrics of her rap songs. Myth finds Fusion II to be a fun person to scare, especially when the beatboxer is in the middle of one of her breakdancing sessions.
Outfit: A white jumpsuit that is undone at her waist revealing her red tanktop and fake gold heart necklace underneath, blue and white sneakers, black fingerless gloves, a couple of piercings in her ears, a red cap worn backwards, sunglasses from her original design.
Just Anon, Ultimate Seer
Ever since he was little, Janon has been having weird prophetic dreams and Janon felt the urge to draw them in his dream journal. Sleeping and drawing are about the only two things that Janon really puts effort into. Janon sleeps a lot to maximize the number of prophecies he can see, and he can get really grouchy if someone wakes him up in the middle of his dreams. As much as Janon tries to put up the image of a stoic emo, his ridiculous fashion sense and adorable appearance makes Janon Myth‘s number one teasing target.
Outfit: Back-length hair that he didn’t bother to cut with a couples of pencils stuck in, a pink ski cap with bunny ears, a white mask with a cat mouth and whiskers on them, a yellow raincoat, galaxy leggings, nothing on his feet.
Sparkle Anon, Former Ultimate Linguist
Coming from an influential family known for their international branches, Sparkle has a penchant for traveling and managed to pick up languages left and right. Currently speaking 14 languages at a native level, Sparkle has a loud, bombastic and dramatic personality. And that loud, bombastic and dramatic personality makes really great reactions to Myth’s jumpscares, along with the added bonus of hearing Sparkle curse in different languages. Sparkle would let Myth touch up on her makeup as long as Myth promises not to put gory details on the linguist’s face.
Outfit: A brown vest over a long-sleeved blue dress shirt, a brown skirt, grey nylons, black heels, a large cape with a map of the word on it, blue pauldrons.
Egg Anon, Former Ultimate Barista, and Wet Sock Anon, Former Ultimate Perfumer
With the twin’s love for the cursed and macabre, Myth got along with them like a house on fire. Myth regularly hangs out with Egg at their coffee house and exchange their regular cursed inside jokes over a nice cup of joe. Wet Sock, despite their bitter personality, produces some of the best-smelling and luxurious perfume in the known world. Wet Sock’s and Myth’s shared love of cosmetics makes them quite the cursed duo. Both of them may have growing feelings for Myth and they usually fight over her, much to Myth’s amusement.
Egg’s Outfit: A white polo shirt, a green apron, black pants and brown loafers.
Wet Sock’s Outfit: A white polo shirt, a black vest, black pants and brown loafers.
Curious Anon, Jr. Ultimate Fencer
Being raised by a prestigious family of fencers, Curious managed to dominate fencing tournaments despite their height and age. Curious is loyal, stalwart and above all else, chivalrous. Said chivalry earned them tons of admirers in their old private school. Similar to Fusion, Curious is also a tough nut to crack, for Curious just has this constant poker face, no matter what horrifying imagery Myth throws at them. But Myth is a determined little lass and will find a way to scare Curious, or she will die trying.
Outfit: Hair in a small ponytail, red and white jacket over a red vest and green tie over a white dress shirt, cream pants, black boots and gloves, always has their trusty rapier on their person.
Anon Nerd, Former Ultimate Lucky Student
Having been admitted to Hope’s Peak via a mere lottery, Anon Nerd has a foul mouth and an equally foul temper, which very clearly came from the poor hand in life that his bad luck gave him. Nerd doesn’t really have anything to his name apart from being part of his school‘s debate club and getting into screaming matches against 13 year olds online. Because of Nerd’s easily-enraged and overreacting personality, Myth finds Nerd in particular to be a fascinating subject to scare. Nerd’s blushy face is just so darn adorable!
Outfit: A black hoodie hood-up, black sweatpants, white socks, grey flip flops.
Eldritch Anon, Ultimate Crime Novelist
Famous for both his graphic and suspenseful novels and his general evasiveness about his personal information, it truly was a wonder that Myth‘s favorite crime novels were written by not only a Hope’s Peak student, but also someone who is 5 years her junior. Myth regularly tries to socialize with her hero in literature, but despite writing graphic crime novels, Eldritch is cowardly and runs away screaming at the slightest chance of danger. Myth’s generally creepy behavior and interests doesn’t really help matters.
Outfit: Longer hair in a ponytail, a dark purple vest with an orange question mark on the lapel over a long white dress shirt, an orange cravat, grey pants, black socks, black slip-on shoes.
Dream Anon, Ultimate Lighting Designer
Dream has become famous for catapulting her school’s theater club to stardom with her amazing light displays. Dream and Myth both have careers centered around show business, they both admire Eldritch Anon and his novels, and they both have outgoing and childish personalities. But a certain quality about Dream prevents Myth from putting her on her list of friends: Dream is a fashion disaster! Myth always tries to give Dream a makeover and a tirade about how crocs are evil, but everything goes in one ear and comes out the other.
Outfit: A blue headband, part of her hair is put into a small sidetail with a green scrunchie, her hair is dyed a rainbow of colors, a black tanktop, a black, white, and pink jacket draped over her shoulders, various fake gold jewelry, orange headphones, white jorts, a blue and purple stocking on her left leg and a green and yellow stocking on her right leg, red crocs.
Iris Anon, Ultimate Jack-Of-All-Trades
Unlike other Ultimates with a clear-cut talent, Iris has mastered a ton of talents but not to the point of Ultimate status. Iris’s unorthodox Ultimate makes her an enigma amongst the other Ultimates. Despite not knowing what her plans are for the future, Iris is determined to make the most of the vast array of skills she mastered. Iris is very optimistic, able to see the good in even the worst and cursed of monsters. Myth admires Iris’s determination and Myth regularly uses Iris as her pranking accomplice.
Outfit: A grey beanie cap with a dark blue star design, a green flannel jacket over a white t-shirt, a gold coin necklace, light blue jorts, white socks and green loafers with white soles, glasses and bandages from her original design.
Purple Anon, Ultimate Toxicologist
As the scion of an influential family in the science field, Purple Anon is hailed as a prodigy in the field of toxicology. Because of Purple’s upbringing, her vocabulary is both old-fashioned and heavily uses scientific jargon, which makes her speech very hard to decipher by the Anons, with a couple of exceptions. Purple has a timid and easy-to-startle personality, usually hiding behind her good friend, Fusion. Myth regularly consults Purple on any new makeup products, to make sure that the makeup isn’t toxic or an allergen.
This series centers around the gremlin make-up artist trying her best to scare her conmates, but eventually, she opens up to others and proves to be a bit of a cinnamon roll.
——————————————————-
PERSONALITY
Having been surrounded by horror for the majority of her life, MakeupArtist!Myth is unfazed at the prospect of horror and revels in the macabre and unnerving. Despite regularly getting kicks from scaring her fellow Anons, MakeupArtist!Myth has a surprisingly kind-hearted personality despite her impish and devious first impression, and can dial back her horror for people like Eldritch and Purple. MakeupArtist!Myth is a massive fashion police towards the other Anons, particularly towards LightingDesigner!Dream.  ——————————————————-
APPEARANCE
MakeupArtist!Myth wears her dyed purple hair in two space buns that she keeps up with blue scrunchies with yellow stars on them. She also wears an oversized grey and black sweater, dark blue short overalls, white gyaru-style socks, and black Mary Janes. Holding up her shorts is a belt that holds a bunch of makeup supplies. MakeupArtist!Myth has the same glasses from her original design, which frame her adorable dot eyes with elaborately designed eyeshadow.  ——————————————————-
I hope you like this Tuesday’s Talentswap! I can’t wait to hear what you think of it! By the way, I’d totally recommend “Danganronpa: The Wolf’s Game”, if you want to see another Killing Game with an Ultimate Linguist as the protagonist! I wonder how Wolf Game’s Ultimate Linguist would interact with your Ultimate Linguist!
-Fusion Anon
Dang I would so like to be this good at makeup XD Wyre and I actually have a friend who’s super good with horror makeup

Glow Up Rumbelle prompt I want to see--with side helping of Swanfire cuz that’s how I roll:
Belle French, a young woman who dreams of working in special effect and prosthetic makeups. She has a very small YouTube channel that doesn’t have many subscribers--but caught the attention of Mr. Gold, who asked her to compete on the show.
Mr. Gold, an icon in prosthetic makeups.  Pioneered new prosthetics for especially gruesome and revolting film characters.  Is bemused and intrigued that Belle’s channel slightly fangirls over them and finds his creations attractive.
Emma Swan, a young woman who has a background in theater makeup.  She’s known for bold, rebellious makeup looks.  She sucks at prosthetics but excels at precision.
Ruby Lucas, another YouTuber and close friend of Belle’s, who has a much more popular YouTube channel.  She is supportive of Belle.  Her makeup talents focuses on artistry; elaborate paintings on the eyelids, textured fur-like contouring, 3D illusions.  She can do the bare minimum at prosthetics.
Zelena/Zelda, a professional makeup artist that wants to strike out on her own.  She has a background in classical theater and disdains “YouTube makeup tutorial” culture.  She has a thing for Gold and despises these newcomers.
Can’t decide if I want Neal as an up and coming actor/model for the artists to work on or another makeup artist who refuses to compete because he wants to get out from under his father’s shadow.  Maybe both...
Hey @thestraggletag I want this thing.

Eighth Grade (2018)
Before I get into how I felt about Eighth Grade, I wanted to leave a message for you from the writer and director Bo Burnham. I can’t find the link to it anymore, though luckily, I saved it in my photos because I enjoyed it so much.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Source: landmarktheatres.com)
I spoke, in an earlier post, about my feelings that we were going through some sort of film renaissance. I’ve been feeling like we are being exposed to more stories we have not seen yet, especially from minority groups and newcomers in film. Eighth Grade has certainly kept that trend alive for me, being that, as Bo Burnham said in his letter, we don’t have movies that explore middle school like this does, let alone from a girl’s point of view. I would agree that middle school is when we actually become self-aware, and no one really talks about that. Eighth Grade has a special place in the coming of age genre. This movie wasn’t afraid to step up and have those conversations about the awkward parts of growing up during early adolescence--for the child and the parent. It was relatable and at the same time, surprising. It was genuine.
This movie is rated R for language and some sexual material. There will be spoilers beyond this point. Thank you for reading!

The Adolescent Experience
There were so many things in the movie that I related to at Kayla’s age, like using YouTube tutorials to get ready, making my own YouTube videos (vlogging just started becoming a big thing around my time in middle school and high school), bargaining with God for things I wanted or wanted to have happen, and finding confidence. Eighth Grade brings up those aspects of growing up that we don’t necessarily want to talk about and some that we need to talk about.
We especially do not want to talk about how we prepare ourselves for our first romantic and sexual experiences, but Eighth Grade makes us face it anyway! I was in shock, first, when Kayla put her hand to her mouth to practice kissing, and second, when she grabbed that banana from her kitchen. I thought, ‘Are we really going there?’ I experienced such secondhand embarrassment during those moments. I had to figure Kayla’s dad would walk in on her, but thankfully, I guess, they were just close calls!
Kayla practicing conversations is something you could group in with practices we don’t commonly bring up. It was a lot easier to watch compared to those other two moments, of course, though I imagine it would have been just as embarrassing for her to have been caught talking to herself. We see a lot of that in film, actually--characters preparing themselves for interactions--though I appreciated seeing it here more than anywhere else. Because of this journey we had been on with Kayla up until that point, and surely because of her age, it was an especially endearing part of the movie to see her working on getting out of her shell--to not be the ‘quietest’ anymore.
In bringing up first romantic and sexual experiences, Eighth Grade also brought up the topic of unwanted sexual advances.
I have seen this movie twice and one thing I found the most interesting as far as audience reaction, was the response to the scene where Kayla is alone with Riley in his car. For me, it was the most suspenseful scene in the movie, and you don’t normally expect to feel that in coming of age movies, not to that level on par with a horror film.
After going to the mall with Olivia, the high school-er Kayla shadowed, and Olivia’s friends, it was decided Olivia would be dropped off first, leaving Kayla alone with Riley, a high school boy she had just met. I immediately felt an uneasiness. A girl sitting behind me in the theater felt the same. I heard her sigh, “Oh God, no.” In contrast, during my second viewing, everyone was completely silent during that scene with the exception of two men in the theater. One sat further up and the other further down, and they both laughed a few times throughout the scene in the car. I can’t say exactly why they laughed. I wasn’t sure how anyone could find that scene anything but distressing.
Consent and pointing out predatory behavior are topics we are becoming more concerned with and I’m thankful to Bo Burnham for including that in his film. Riley took advantage of Kayla’s young age and lack of sexual experience, and when she stood up for herself, he turned everything around on her. He shamed her and yelled at her like she was the one who was wrong, and that’s how it goes. What was more emotional and heartbreaking was seeing how that experience affected her. She stopped making her videos and if you notice, she stopped wearing makeup to school, and she was feeling generally down. Those experiences can take everything from you. I hope that sharing Kayla’s experience--which is, unfortunately, a very common one and can happen early on in life as it did for her--encourages parents to have that conversation about consent with their kids.
During that video where Kayla decides to quit YouTube, she opens up about her nervousness. I found her roller coaster analogy to be one of the more beautifully written and truest parts of the movie, especially when she says that she tries really hard not to feel that way. As an audience, we know about it the whole time. We saw how she freaked out in Kennedy’s restroom earlier in the movie during the pool party. It’s Kayla opening up about it to us that let’s us know that the moment in the bathroom wasn’t a unique occurrence. In addition to consent, our society is also becoming more aware of how common anxiety and depression is and we are becoming more okay with having that conversation. One thing that gets pointed out a lot is how parents don’t seem to take warning signs in their children seriously enough. With that, I appreciated seeing how patient Kayla’s father was with her and how he genuinely cared to understand her and help her.

Score
My favorite movies are the ones that ‘make me feel something,’ and one thing that most, if not all of those movies have in common, to me, is that they have great music. The music should really anchor me down to a moment and inform me, but not force me, and I should be able to revisit that feeling when I listen to the song again. Anna Meredith’s score for Eighth Grade has easily become one of my all-time favorites. Her songs really awaken an introspectiveness, especially in “Being Yourself,” the “How To Be Confident” songs, “Honeyed Words,” “MGMS Class of 2017,” and “REDBLUEGREEN.” Truly, all of them are so wonderful on their own.
Additionally, I must say that next to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Eighth Grade includes my favorite use of “Orinoco Flow” by Enya in a movie. It plays while we see Kayla dive deep into her social media routine, and it makes the scene in itself feel like a time capsule that screams, “This is growing up today!” It’s like watching it is watching a grand encapsulation of growing up in this moment in history, like it’s somehow educational, and in the moment, I’m entranced by it enough to believe that it could one day be included in a video about human evolution.

Different Directions
Eighth Grade surprised me in a really positive way.
In Ladybird, another A24 movie, Saoirse Ronan’s character, who has the titular role (if you understand the reference), wanted a change. She made friends with the ‘cool kids’ and ditches her best friend in that pursuit only to come back to her when it doesn’t work out. There were ingredients included in Eighth Grade that could have resulted in a similar situation. Kayla could have made friends with Gabe earlier on (who I love), then she could have been welcomed into Kennedy’s friend circle, or something could have transpired between her and Aiden, and she could have ditched Gabe as a friend. I started to expect the storyline to unfold that way early on, because I am so used to that sort of thing, and I’m glad it didn’t.
Granted, Kayla was still ugly to her father, but my inclination is to chalk that up to Kayla feeling misunderstood and unsatisfied with herself and her social life, which can be particularly difficult at that stage in life. Admittedly, it was very hard for me to watch the first conversation shown between Kayla and her dad because I felt she was being so rude, but I also think it was important to include. It made me reflect on my siblings’ and my own preference for technology over person-to-person interaction, especially with our parents. It reminded me a lot of my own days as a teenager wanting to be left alone with my phone. There is no doubt that scene looked familiar to many.
Another way I was surprised was I feared Olivia, the high school student Kayla befriends, would not actually end up being the kind person she was presented as. Again, at least that is what I have been conditioned to believe in film--that things or people may not be as they seem. First, I was afraid that Olivia would ignore Kayla’s phone call and that Kayla would be upset over that. I was happy to see Olivia picked up and not only that, invited Kayla to hang out. When that happened, I was met with a new fear, that their hangout would consist of drugs or something she shouldn’t take part in. We know how that turned out in the end with Riley, though that was certainly not Olivia’s intention. Nonetheless, I was satisfied with the fact that Olivia’s character was written as being so welcoming toward Kayla without any surprises and that Kayla was also consistently herself throughout, only trying to better her confidence.
I’ve always loved going to the movies. I’m told that when I was little, I’d sigh, “This is the life,” in my seat. Every now and then, a movie grabs hold of my heart so strongly, it feels like it’s swelling and then I’m left with tears in my eyes and a feeling like I’ll explode with love. Ang Lee calls this “juice.” That feeling reminds me why I love film. Eighth Grade has juice.

Learn the Art of Drawing and Make Great Decisions!
The field of graphic art is an ever-expanding discipline that has been very much influenced by the changing needs of society. In the modern era graphic art has emerged as one of the most popular forms of art. It can be defined as a pictorial representation that makes use of several artistic mediums to communicate a message. A group of these visual art forms are commonly known as abstract art.
A discipline of visual artistic expression, graphic art encompasses a wide range of creative visual expression, normally two-dimensional, that is not dependent on any particular medium. The diversity in graphic art extends to advertising, photography, printmaking, illustrations, motion graphics, and computer graphics. Some of the more popular areas of graphic art include children's book illustrations, fashion magazine illustrations, magazine layouts, logo design, and children's book cover designs. However, graphic art has other areas as well such as film, television, and theater. In the twentieth century, graphic art became widely accepted as a socially and economically progressive art form.
One of the most important components of graphic art is the creation of imagery. Images can be comprised of photographs, paintings, drawings, 3D computer animation, and computer-generated imagery. One of the most popular areas of visual arts that employ pictures and images is children's book illustration. Many fine arts colleges concentrate on producing fine artists, who will one day become graphic artists.
While not everyone is cut out for this highly competitive field, anyone who has a true love of painting or sketching can easily find success with it. You do not necessarily have to be extremely accomplished in this area in order to succeed, but you do need to be an artistically talented individual with a true eye for color and the ability to see the world in a fresh and creative way. There are many different classes that are offered through art colleges and universities. There are also countless books, magazines, and websites that offer detailed instructions and tutorials on various aspects of graphic art.
Illustration is one of the most basic and important components of graphic art. Illustrators create beautiful images that can communicate a message to those who look at them. Students who are just beginning with illustration may choose to study photography, painting, printmaking, and sculpture before moving forward in their illustrative career. Today, more than ever, people need to have an illustrator on their side to help communicate messages that are vital to them.
Color is the key component in creating fine graphic works. When creating drawings and illustrations, artists use primary and secondary colors, as well as shades and hues. Many different applications exist for these primary and secondary colors. Artists use primary colors to draw scenes and characters, and secondary colors to make them appear in different hues, such as black and white. Some artists even use multiple hues of one color.
The process of drawing comes before the actual creation of the final piece. One of the greatest things about this art form is that the process is continuous. An artist can begin by sketching out his or her idea and then build on it. A perfect example of this is a child's rendering. Once the basic sketches are complete, the artist will add in details like shadowing, adding in highlights, or shading to bring forth the nuances of the subject.
Graphic design and illustration for graphic art and design courses are offered online. These programs allow students to learn the art of making wonderful drawings while working at their own pace. Students learn the basics of drawing and then develop their skills according to their own interests. This means working with colors and textures and then working on technicalities, such as creating a layout. Learning this art form allows students to express themselves creatively, while earning their degree and starting to build a career for themselves.

Statement of Intent :
“A look behind cast shadows”
My FMP proposal is to look primarily into shadows, and the connotations that accompany them; the anonymity, the coldness, the ‘mysticalness’ they possess.
In terms of looking ahead at my ‘aim to produce’, I like the idea of it being interactive and a big space where imaginations can run wild, and the audience can be actively involved.
Shadows do have a link with mystical/ fae folk ideology; another link to the Greek mythology I looked at during the mirror saga.
This ‘Shadows’ project pushes me creatively in the sense that I am now working in a completely different medium. Shadows are unique in the way that they themselves are not tactile, but you can fabricate them either with yourself or using objects, which can have weird textures that can be shown through the use of the shadow or kept to yourself and made personal.
The idea of using shadows first came to me when I was filming Why Waste 3. I saw that ‘Barry the Turtle’ was casting some interesting shadows due to his unusual texture and semi- transparent features.
I have researched books and news articles pertinent to ‘Shadows’, specifically the book “play with light and shadows: the art and techniques of shadow theatre” by Herta Schönewolf which could prove pivotal if it pushes me down the more theatrical route. However, Chris Knight’s book also focuses on portrait photography incorporating shadows and crafting light which really interests me and could take my work down that route instead.
Already I was thinking in the ballpark of mystical anonymity, and from that I started thinking about the feelings we often associate with shadows, they can be cold, dark and gloomy – I’m interested in incorporating these emotions and what they inherently represent.
I would love to make this an interactive piece to really draw in the audience and allow their imaginations to run and give them the opportunity to be a part of this.
I also want to look into lino printing with the imprint/ mark it leaves on transparent/ lucent materials- see if I can make it temporary and shift/ move like a shadow would. Or perhaps layer the lino print with different variations of ink atop a pane of glass held over a light source, I could manufacture my own shadows.
I like the idea of a performative piece incorporated within my Shadow saga. That’s not to say drawings/ sketches and painting won’t become relevant at some point. In my practise they prove a tangible starting point and from that my ideas progress. I’d like to focus more perhaps on the surfaces and how light would react.
Evaluation Methods:
Tutorials with peers and tutors.
Stepping back and reassessing my work.
Making experiments and working onwards from the failed attempts.
Sketching out initial ideas, more specifically if it’s to be a performance/ moving image.
Instead of both a blog and a sketchbook, I have opted for solely sketchbook based.
To continue reading mythological and mystical literature and making annotations of relevant points.
The library on campus.
Reading relevant artists work/ processes
Watching/ listening to relevant documentaries/ podcasts.

Year 2 Weekly Summaries - Week 4
Tumblr media
Day 1- Film language Lecture 14th October 2019
Horizontal lines are the calmest type of composition.
Vertical lines give height and dimension being more active.
Diagonal lines are the most active and show perspective.
Wide shots establish the setting.Helps understand depth and three dimensional space.
Two shot - When two people are in the shot. Used in dialogue
Eye line helps to show the focus of the scene.
 Draws people attention:
-movement
-Brightness
-eyes
-Vanishing point
-contrasting in any visual component
Camera Movement
-Pan
-Tilt
Camera moves with motivation of the story. The camera can have its own voice by being un motivated. For example:
Slow push in creeps towards the subject makes people to look harder. This starts from a still frame but slowly moves towards the subject.
The creep out -Makes the figure look smaller almost abandoning the subject. Gives depth to the scene and can show lack of compassion, intimacy etc.
Camera turns away - the Camera move leaves no hope for escape. Shows the trauma is too much to view.
The distracted , the wandering Camera- explores other parts of the world. Doesn’t focus on the story but moves to other subjects. Isn’t the subjective camera and becomes its own character, telling its own story.
The Yelling Camera- Shows what too look at and when to look at it. Immediately grabs the attention of the viewer.
Tracking shot is on tracks. Shows the movement of travelling with the character through their story.
Dolly Shot - similar to a tracking shot
Crane shot is a shot taken by a camera on a moving crane or jib. Most cranes accommodate both the camera and an operator, but some can be moved by remote control.
Crossing the line , the 180 degree rule : The 180-degree rule is a cinematography guideline that states that two characters in a scene should maintain the same left/right relationship to one another. When the camera passes over the invisible axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line and the shot becomes what is called a reverse angle.

Essay -
Find two pieces of film that demonstrate an aspect of film language and compare the two. For example a film that uses colour and a film that doesn’t use colour. A film that uses a lot of camera movement and a film that uses limited camera movement. Focus on a specific aspect of the film as well , fight sequences. Choose a sequence that isn’t very long.Talk about the mechanics and don’t sound like a film reviewer.
Fight scenes in the Dark knight vs Fight scene in creed.

Day 3 - sound induction
Today I was introduced to implementing and cutting sound in adobe. For this induction we had to cut clips of sound and rearrange them on a timeline as well as add effects to them . I found this to be a very easy process and can see how this will be implemented in the future for the project. I also liked how we can change the pitch and increase the volume of the audio with the program. This allows human conversation to be understood and clear with other factors playing underneath.
Day 3- Media lab Session
In todays session I continued to iron out the rest of the animation. I began to focus on the movement of the ball and introduced the use of a blend shape. Blend shapes allow me to transform the shape of an object, for instance I changed the shape of the grape so that it appeared to be squashed on impact with the toaster. To do this I had to duplicate the shape the change the properties of the duplicated shape to resemble a splat. I then used the blend shapes tab to create the transition, finally I removed the visibility of the ball on the specific frames were I wanted the impact to occur.
I also began to model the rest of the kitchen, for this I created a fridge that  would be placed behind the toaster. I added the same material as the spoon to have a metallic texture. I then also extended the countertop downward so it adds better depth to the scene.
The next part of the process in todays session was to figure out the issues I was having with lighting. I found that my scene overall wasn’t very well lit so to counter this I added three more lights. These lights resembled the style frames I am currently creating to give the night time aesthetic. The light colours are a soft muted red and a brighter yellow. The yellow helps enhance the light that is not casted by the shadow of the utensils and the red is supposed to help add depth to the shadows themselves. However, then I went to render the frame the lights do not seem to appear. So I will have to ask for help from Adam or John to understand the full process of lighting the scene.
Day 4- Life drawing
In todays life drawing session we focused on using the medium of paint to help establish light and tone within a piece. The first exercise was to create two paintings using an olive green background as the mid tone , a flesh tone and a dark. I Initially misjudged the proportion of the figure for the first attempt due to me believing that we were not doing the painting on the same side of the canvas. I was disappointed with my outcome as a result of this as I had to cram the second painting into the corner. Although I achieved a likeness I believe that on a bigger scale I would have been able to show more of the tones within the piece. The second exercise was to create a painting focused on a specific area of the model. For this I chose to paint the face of the model. Initially I found that starting out the painting was the most difficult. This was due to me having to use paint as a guide layer instead of a pencil. I was disappointed with some of the scale and proportion used within the face especially as the nose is too large in comparison to the rest of the features in the face. I also struggled with the detail around the eye as it seemed to become lost as I added more layers of paint. I want to improve my use of paint but feel like it is a medium that I will continue to avoid as I prefer to use pencil or even work digitally.
Day 4- Group tutorial with John
In todays group tutorial I was able to gain feedback on my current work in progress. The feedback was that the acting overall in the piece was good and clearly showed the direction I wanted to take the piece in. However, I need to improve both the camera movements and the curve of the ball. John suggested that I add more of a curl to the ball as it would offset the straight line created from the run up of the character. This intern would make the piece more visually appealing by having the ball come on and off screen. The camera critique was that there needs to be more holds introduced to fully show the movement, although it flows introducing cuts would greatly increase the effectiveness of the camera as a whole. Personally ,  feel like the run up of the character to the ball needs work as it I one paced and to do this I will start off slowly and then increase the speed of the character as he kicks the ball. I am looking forward to fine tuning my animation over the course of the next few weeks.

Beauty Basics - What are things for my face? Part 2
In the first post I wrote on this topic, I focused primarily on the products that exist for the overall face, or “base makeup”. While the purpose of base makeup is to create a blank canvas (that is, even out the complexion, make the texture of the skin ready for additional makeup), the products I’ll cover in this article are meant to bring color and dimension to the face.
Blush
One of the OG cosmetics that’s been around for thousands of years, blush’s general purpose is to mimic a healthy, youthful flush on the cheeks, as well as accentuate cheek-bones. Also known as “blusher” across the pond, or “rouge”, blush these days comes in a variety of shades that are traditionally in the pink, orange and purple families, from light pastels to bright, vibrant colors, all the way to deep, wine-colored shades.
Formulas range from the typical pressed-powder variety, to liquid or creamy formulas, stick or crayon/pencil form, stains, cushion and even mineral-based. Blush may have a matte finish on the skin, or an iridescent, shimmer effect.
Bronzer
Whereas makeup trends of yesteryear generally seemed to sway between super pale and porcelain to super tan and beachy, these days bronzer seems to be the product of choice for adding a touch of tan to the face for dimension, without having to expose your skin to the sun’s harmful rays. It’s the best of both worlds, so to speak, and can be applied as sparingly or liberally as your heart desires.
Typically, bronzer is said to be applied to areas of the face that would naturally be exposed to sun. However, my observations of the makeup community find that bronzer is more often applied to the contours of the face in order to emphasize structure and shadow, such as the jawline, temples, and hollows of the cheeks. Bronzer runs the gamut of formulas and applications from powder to liquid, with pressed powder being the most popular. The finish may be matte or shimmery.
Contour/Contouring
Quite simply, contouring is the act of accentuating your facial structure using light and shadow. As I understand it, contouring became popular first in theater, where actors would use light and dark colors to strongly emphasize facial features so their expressions could be seen and comprehended from even the nosebleed section. This of course transferred to film, and has been a mainstay in makeup in one form or another for a good long time.
These days, it is popular to use a product that is a few shades darker than your skin tone to emphasize the shadows of your facial structure for a slimmer, more flattering effect. This usually means under the cheekbone (the “hollows” of the cheeks), the jaw-line, and the sides of the nose.
You can also use makeup a few shades lighter than your skin tone to brighten things up elsewhere, such as under the eyes, along the top of the nose and cheekbones, and the cupid’s bow. This is also called “highlighting” the face, which is a general concept that can be taken a step further with shimmery, highly reflective ingredients, which I’ll cover next. Most often you’ll find makeup meant for contouring in a pressed powder or cream formula. Contouring makeup meant for shadowing is almost always matte, as putting a reflective product in an area meant to be a shadow kind of defeats the purpose.
Highlight/Highlighter
This is the sparkly, iridescent offshoot of contouring. If you’re new to makeup, highlight is going to seem like the crack-cocaine of the beauty world. Rarely has a product elicited such child-like glee out of so many glamorous people. I’m pretty sure it’s one of our most primal instincts to covet that which is shiny. This product is meant to emphasize, often with intensity, the highest-raised areas of the face such as the tops of the cheekbones, top of the nose, right under (and sometimes right above) the eyebrow and even the cupid’s bow of the upper lip. This can often extend to the tops of the shoulders and the collar bone, especially in the summertime when more skin is on display.
Pressed powder once again is the popular choice, but like most face makeup it also comes in liquid and cream form. Finishes are almost always reflective in some way, whether it be shimmery, pearly, metallic or glittery (for the bold).
To clarify, there exists both the general concept of highlighting the areas of the face most exposed to light, as explained in the last section, and there is a product specifically called “highlight” or “highlighter” that is used to make some of these areas more reflective. Think of highlighter as the snow at the very top of the mountain.
Now that we (hopefully) have a better idea about things that are for your face in the world of makeup, we’ll get into some lessons and tutorials about how things for your face should be used on your face for a flattering effect. In the end though, makeup is playful. While I may share what I’ve learned, this article and all that I write about can only go as far as my experience and observations. Do what you want, there are no true “rules”, even if there are trends and general concepts.
