Pre-Joseon Sageuks: a Biased and Incomplete List

So, as promised way earlier, a post on pre-Joseon sageuks that I’ve either watched or plan to watch so am aware of them. I am sure there are others but here is what I got. Obviously my takes on them are subjective blah blah blah.

Jumong - arguably the Daddy of all Traditional Sageuks, this one ran for over 80 episodes and had insane ratings. It follows the rise of the mythical founder of Gogureyo tho it takes fantastical elements of his story and changes them for historically plausible ones. It’s very long and very meaty and politics/battle heavy and has a large cast of complex characters (including pretty nifty women and a LGBTQ supporting OTP) but it is anchored by the incredible performance of Song Il Gook as the titular character as he slowly but believably grows from nothing to a hero if at the cost of losing his marriage.

The King of Tears Lee Bang Won - this is basically a half and half beast as (you can tell by the title), it’s set in the last days of Goryeo and early days of Joseon. The time period covered is the same as in My Country and Six Flying Dragons, but this is the most traditional take of them all, even more so than 6FD. Not a single pretty face in the cast (tho Joo Sang Wook is a mighty fine man, emphasis on “man”), this is for the real fans of traditional sageuks. I enjoyed it a lot but if you want to check out pre-Joseon sageuks but have mainly watched youth sageuk stuff before, you should probably start with another drama on this list.

The Great Seer - set in the reign of King Gongmin, the last proper king of Goryeo (his son King U is technically the very last but there are questions as to his status), this is for those of you who want to watch Ji Sang in a sageuk. It’s centered around seers but don’t expect mysticism, this knuckles down to politics.

Shin Don - hi there, another story set in the reign of King Gongmin! From the title, you can tel it centers heavily on the powerful monk who ruled for the King at one point. This has been on my to-watch list forever because this appears to devote a decent chunk of its time to Gongmin X Noguk and I am dying for a proper drama for those two. This is from 2005 so if you do watch, keep that in mind in terms of visuals etc. That cast is lit!

Bicheonmu - this is sort of cheating because it’s pretty much set in China but it involves Koreans so. It’s a drama take on the same story told in a pretty awesome movie. Tragic love, battles, young Joo Jin Moo etc. i am very fond of it. This said, find and watch the Chinese version, Korean one was shredded.

The Iron Empress/Empress Cheon Chu - set in Goryeo, this was another of women ruler centric dramas that had a mini popularity peak in late 00s/early 10s (a trend I wish continued.) it got overshadowed by Queen Seonduk but by all accounts is a solid drama. It’s on my list but I haven’t watched it yet.

The King’s Daughter, Soo Baek Hyang - by the writer of The Rebel and My Dearest. Have I got your attention? Another woman centric ruler tale set in Baekje. Yes, there is a love story. That cast is great, to boot. I have started and liked what I’ve seen but got sidetracked. Need to get back to it. Before you look at the ep number and faint seeing the number 108, keep in mind that the eps are half an hour long so it’s an equivalent of a normal 54 ep sageuk so if you can watch eg Empress Ki, you are good with this.

My Country: The New Age - Lee Bang Won but make it gay. OK, I kid, sort of (not really) but this is smart and passionate and heartbreaking. If you want a wide scope or lots of politics, probably not a take for you (Six Flying Dragons is RIGHT there), but if you want an intense, emotional tale, come right in!

Six Flying Dragons - to me, this is THE drama about Lee Bang Won. It’s smart and emotional, deals with politics and has heart. It has a large cast of characters I got invested in, OTPs that will blow your mind etc etc.

Faith/The Great Doctor - if you are a fan of old school shoujo like Red River, Basara or Fushigi Yuugi, this or Moon Lovers are your best bet on this list. A time traveling tale with other fantasy elements about a modern day plastic surgeon who ends up being kidnapped into Goryeo during the early days of King Gongmin’s (hi!) reign by a tormented, oath bound warrior played by Lee Min Ho at his hottest (and playing historical General Choi Young. Do RPS at your pleasure), this one is one of my all time favorites.

Seodonyo/Ballad of Seo Dong - I am actually currently watching this one tho I haven’t been posting about it. Set in both Baekje and Silla, this is an angsty love story with a side of politics. It’s filmed in 2005 and looks accordingly but if you don’t mind dated visuals, this is pretty great!

Emperor of the Sea - set in Silla and Tang, this was a huge hit and deservedly so. Our protag is a slave and gladiator and a great naval hero. This is grim and smart and epic. It’s from 2004 so once again, if dated visuals are no-go, skip, but if you want a great story and performances, this has your name on it.

The Kingdom of the Winds - an epic cursed prince narrative, our ML (Song Il Gook at his sexiest) rises from abandoned prince and slave and abused assassin to general, royal and king, sparing time for an angsty delicious love story with an enemy princess. This has serious sageuk bits AND the best shoujo tropes in the business, plus enough whump to keep anyone happy.

Gye Baek - Lee Seo Jin, another sageuk stalwart, stars as the title character in this tale of a Baekje commoner, war slave and general. This is grim but glorious.

Soldier/God of War - this is a traditional war-centric sageuk and grim as hell. Another slave to general tale.

King Geun Chu Go - this is on my watch list; it’s about a warrior king of Baekje. Haven’t seen it but heard good things.

Ja Myung Go - smart and unrelentingly tragic, featuring Jang Ryeo Won and Jung Kyung Ho as doomed lovers and Park Min Young in an evil role, this is great and has deeply flawed characters in the very definition of doomed by the narrative tale.

Arthdal Chronicles - this is obviously a fantasy but the tale of prophesied twins, magical priestess, wars and mysticism is clearly set in a pre-Joseon in terms of aesthetics world.

Alchemy of Souls - like Arthdal this is pure fantasy but also like Arthdal, a lot of its styling is pre-Joseon so on this list it goes.

Moon Lovers/Scarlet Heart Ryeo - ok I think if people have heard of only one drama on this very long list, it’s probably this one. Modern time traveling heroine ending up during the reign of Goryeo’s King Taejo, in the middle of his sons’ fight for the throne, having an epic but doomed romance with shoujo catnip tortured bad boy Lee Jun Ki.

Shine or Go Crazy - if you want a more historical take on Moon Lovers succession fight but still with plenty of hotness, angst and doomed romance, come right in. This baby stars Jang Hyuk, so you know it’s bound to be good. I actually started it and enjoyed it but got sidetracked. Need to get back to it. Fun fact: while Moon Lovers was hugely popular internationally, domestically Shine or Go Crazy (they aired around the same time), did much better.

The Legend/The First King’s Four Gods - for a long time this was my favorite kdrama of all time and is still probably in my top 10. Ignore the odd first episode, the rest is perfection. Expensive and wonderfully written, this was Bae Yong Joon’s last drama before he retired to rest on his pile of money (if you are young, you probably don’t remember what a big deal he was, bigger than all the Hallyu stars nowadays put together. He basically was singlehandedly supporting the kdrama industry at one point), but what a worthy way to go out. It’s an epic Goguryeo fantasy tale of a prophesied prince coming into his own, with such amazing characters and relationships and OTPs and battles and points about destiny versus free will. It is everything and I kinda want to rewatch now.

The Blade and The Petal/Sword and Flower - ostensibly a star-crossed Gogureyo love story, this really is more about politics. It’s a mixed bag. The visuals are insane but Uhm Tae Woong, while always solid in modern dramas, is out of place in a sageuk (in QSD Kim Nam Gil stole his thunder; there is nobody to do so here but that doesn’t help him.)

Queen Seon Duk - probably the most famous entrant into female power sageuks, this was a mad hit and centered on the titular character’s rise to power and fight for the same with her female nemesis Mishil. If you want love stories, angsty fighter Bidam propelled Kim Nam Gil to stardom as he stole the leading man mantle from Uhm Tae Woong.

Empress Ki - currently rewatching this. It’s set in the waning days of Goryeo but takes place mainly in Yuan. Still, the FL is Korean and a lot of the story revolves around one of her suitors’, a deposed Korean king, attempts to get his land back. As you can tell by my rabid posts, this is a great drama - politics, romance (I ship FL and the Yuan emperor like mad), murder, dysfunction and everything good.

Hwarang - it’s so brain dead it might as well be a brain-eating amoeba in drama form but it did give us both Park Hyung Sik and Park Seo Joon before they made it big in drama world. It’s terrible tho, stay away.

River where the Moon Rises - I have such a love/hate relationship with this drama - I loved the beginning, with our tormented assassin heroine slowly being warmed by the loyal rustic ML with his own trauma. And then Ji Soo’s bullying scandal happened and he was replaced by Na In Woo, aka the actor I like least from any country in all my close to two decades of watching dramas. I tried but I simply couldn’t and I am still mad. This said, if you don’t share my NIW allergy, it’s probably worth a watch.

The Great King’s Dream - if you liked QSD and can’t get enough of the period but want an even more traditional tale, you can do worse than this drama. I liked what I saw but this baby is 70 eps and lacks Bidam so I peaced out. Maybe I will get back to it sometime, but probably not.

Jeong Do Jeon - as you can tell by the title, centers on JDJ and the last days of Goryeo. Not really my bag (time period been done plenty in other dramas and I don’t have that much interest in JDJ) but supposed to be solid.

My Only Love Song - a short silly mess but still probably better than River (which tells the same story) because it doesn’t have NIW.

King Gwanggaeto the Great - 92 eps. I can’t!

The King Loves - delicious love triangle (that goes ALL ways), angst, prettiness, a side of bodyguard romance. What’s not to love in this Goryeo tale?

Healer and Seer by Victoria Henley (2000-2004)

Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones (1985)

The Medoran Chronicles by Lynette Noni (2015-2019)

The Girl With Silver Eyes by Willo Davis Roberts (1980)

The Song of Albion by Stephen R. Lawhead (1991-1991)

The World of Riverside by Ellen Kushner (1987-2002)

The Squire's Tales by Gerald Morris (1998-2010)

"Here Comes the Rain Again" by the Eurythmics is definitely such a Morgan song-- (kind of a song analysis below)

By being introduced to another Seer Obscura, I think Morgan has probably been thinking about how he was before he learned more about his powers, while explaining things to his listener, and reminding himself about the struggles- "Here comes the rain again; Falling on my head like a memory"

And then having the emotions of, possibly surprise, maybe a little excitement since there is someone else that he can relate to, as well as his new fondness towards them- "Falling on my head like a new emotion"

He mentioned how he likes to be in the fresh air and listen to the night sounds- "I want to walk in the open wind"

Since both of them can't learn of each other's futures and immediately know about each other, they get to interact like normal people and talk to each other- "So, baby, talk to me; like lovers do"

And if Morgan and the seer obscura listener get together, it'd be a cute slowburn song for them- "Tearing me apart like a new emotion; I want to breathe in the open wind; I want to kiss like lovers do; Want to dive into your ocean; Is it raining with you?"

The song also has a clear sound (at least to me), and Morgan also seems to like clarity, focus, and centered moments, especially since he uses his powers often (and seeing the future has been noted to be overwhelming.) ALSO the part with "Want to dive into your ocean; Is it raining with you?" is one of the more intimate toned sounding lyrics, and Morgan seems like a more intimate guy that likes the quiet moments.

(I literally was just imagining if they ever have a "confession" audio, then i'd like them to be on a date and then it starts raining, they go to find shelter and are soaked, but then one of them confesses and they kiss, and maybe dance in the rain idk. My brain seriously derailed as soon as I heard the song again and was like "omg that's so perfect")

(I also think it's funny to imagine the Spellsong sounding like an 80s song, instead of an orchestra or smthn. That part was so funny)

The Seer's Song: Echoes Through Middle Earth {Chapter 1}

A hundred years is a mere blink of an eye for an elf. Sixty years was nothing to the Oracle of Middle-Earth. It was merely a fleeting thought as she sat in Lord Elrond’s study with one of her specially made books in her lap. Feeling the raised scriptures of Sindarin, Sisílla’s fingers grazed over the thick parchment and enjoying the tales of old. Reading about the Ent’s that roamed across Fangorn Forest and dragons across the land. Memories of Erebor and her previous travels washed over her mind and a small smile graced upon her lips. The Company of Thorin Oakenshield, Bilbo Baggins, traveling with them from the Misty Mountains and through Mirkwood, falling for the dwarven king that was Thorin himself, and soon losing him from his injuries from Azog during the Battle of the Five Armies. 

But those memories were soon thrown away as a sharp pain raked across her forehead. The feeling was like a sharp and scalding hot blade carving into her skin.

Darkness spreading across Middle-Earth and Black Speech cursing the lands. Corruption and betrayal among kingdoms and neighboring lands. Fire and destruction. The Nazgul roamed the lands in search of a valuable relic for Sauron. But what it was, she couldn’t see as it hurt her mind's eye. Something that was made from the fires of Mount Doom. But, there was light. A company that would depart from Rivendell to stop the forces of Sauron. Men, Hobbit’s, a Dwarf, an Elf, and the Gray Wizard. But one man within the company was in the forefront for her. His garb was nothing familiar, nor was it her closest friend. But she could not hear his voice nor was she feeling comfortable to know who the man was. But as quick as the vision came, she was back to the present day and feeling her head sear in pain.

Her back feeling cold and her breath ragged, the grasp of warmth in her small hands as she heard voices call to her.

“Sisílla? Are cin eithel?”

She knew the voice all too well. It was Elrohir, and the presence of his twin brother, Elladan, was one she was not expecting to have before her. Her silvery blue eyes, reflecting no focus to either brother or one thing on the ceiling, Sisílla felt the brother’s help her sit upright and carefully help her into one of the high back chairs that was in their father’s study. “What… what happened?” Sisílla asked, her voice rasped as she settled into the chair.

Elladan spoke first, sitting to her right. “We heard someone wail within Ada’s study. Elrohir and I had found you thrashing on the floor and speaking in Quenya.”

“Then you went silent and relaxed. Your breath became barely a whisper…” Elrohir spoke, his voice holding a somber tone.

Sisílla swallowed a large lump that was lodged in her throat. Her head spun causing her to sway in her seat and close her eyes tight to stop the spinning sensation she felt. Elladan left the room to find their father while Elrohir stayed by Sisílla’s side. Soft reassuring words came from her adoptive elder brother, but it sounded as though she was underwater. Muffled and distorted. As her mind still was recovering from her vision, she could feel the presence of another elf kneel in front of her. Their presence commanded attention, something that Sisílla was very well attuned with.

“Thank you, my sons. You may leave.”

Lord Elrond spoke, his tone even and calm. Both Elladan and Elrohir left without rebuttal leaving Sisílla and Elrond alone in his study. Only silence filled the air with the distant sounds of birds chirping their songs within the elven kingdom. The spring air soon began to grow thick with tension. A type of tension that both the Elven Lord and the Oracle felt years before the quest to The Lonely Mountain.

“What did you see, my dear?” Elrond asked carefully as he stood and sat across from her in another high back chair.

As Sisílla began to recall what she had seen with as much detail as the vision would allow her to speak of, Lord Elrond could only listen and begin to think of what it could mean. Especially with Sauron coming into her vision. Elrond made sure she was hidden from the world. Even with her travels with the dwarves, she was not seen much by the White Orc nor for long as he was slain in battle. And Thranduil made sure that despite being a prisoner while in Mirkwood, she was still cared for and kept hidden from the dark forces.

But what made him question was another male was in the forefront of her vision. Her first true vision with a man was of Thorin Oakenshield, but he passed away from his injuries during battle. So why was there another man? From the race of Men of all races. For how that race had always fallen for desires of power and control on things that were out of their knowledge or grasp.

Clasping his hands in deep thought, Lord Elrond spoke. “What do you believe this vision is telling you, melon?”

“I… I do not know?” Sisílla shook her head.

She angled her head to face him in a general direction. Her silver eyes unfocused, but holding such anxiety and uncertainty with her most current vision. Sisílla wanted answers. This is the very first time she was unsure what her vision meant and it made her unsure of herself. Lord Elrond couldn’t help but feel a sense of empathy for her. Rising from his seat and striding to where she sat, he laid a hand on her shoulder which she rested her own on top of his which gave her a sense of semblance and security.

“Do not fret, my dear. We will get through this and solve what is to come for Middle Earth and you.” He reassured her in a calm tone.

Sisílla smiled and nodded, though faint, she felt a sense of relief to have Lord Elrond help her through these troubling times of uncertainty. Although he could see her visibly relax at his words, Elrond could only think of what is yet to come.

The Nazgul had been recently spotted by scouts. The darkness becomes more powerful as the supposed knowledge of the One Ring, and Gollum now in interrogation to find where the ring could be. It was something that the Elven Lord could not deny any further. Sauron was growing desperate in his search for the ring he had made to control all. And with Sisílla now able to see Sauron in a vision such as this only meant that she was not going to be safe any longer in Rivendell.

What will become of her, he didn’t know. But he had to hold onto faith that she would be safe in whatever her vision was entailing. For the Oracle is needing to stay within the light and help those to stop Sauron.

Only time will tell.

☆ nocturne in c-sharp minor - frédéric chopin (classical music is a way to quiet the noise. prefers piano, but most lyric-less music will work if it’s in a minor key and has a moving melody. as his outside world is messy and frantic, he uses the precision and accuracy of an artist’s fingers to simulate that solace in his mind. enjoys listening to it while writing or reading, both hobbies that he’s recently picked up on.)

☆ piano concerto no. 21 in c major, k. 467: II. andante - mozart (i imagine him wearing a black turtleneck, having dark hair and rounder glasses, and some grey plaid pajama pants with a warm cup of tea; caffeine free, of course. when he says Seeing is like music, this song is what comes to mind for him. it can truly be a gift, just as he’s said, but it can quickly tip-toe the line into tragedy if you’re not careful. it’s all about balance.)

☆ the heart - david celeste (strangely, i imagine that morgan looks similar to seokjin from bts…those are just the visuals i get when i hear this song? longer, slimmer face shape, full lips, broad shoulders, soft cheek bones and jawline, etc. etc. it’s not exactly him, there are some differences in his eyes and nose that i can’t place yet, but no matter what i try to change or picture differently, seokjin is my point of reference for what morgan looks like. this song just brought out his appearance for me and i have no clue why. i don’t even keep up with kpop anymore and haven’t for a while now. if you totally disagree with me then i am so sorry 😭)

☆ prelude in e minor, op. 28, no. 4 - frédéric chopin (plays mostly classical because it’s what he prefers. he partakes in playing the piano on occasion and understands music theory, which is why he uses music to refer to his Sight. it makes sense to him. he knows it; he’s comfortable in it. he believes that music is the closest thing that the unempowered will ever have to magic, and he believes that to be a beautiful tragedy.)

☆ catwoman - michael giacchino (he’s the type if person to pay acute attention to the soundtrack of a movie over the movie itself, though he’s not much of a movie person to begin with. he was interested in batman as a child and decided to go see its 2022 release—and he absolutely fell in love with the soundtrack. it pulled the right kinds of emotion from him at the right times, and it added a perfect effect to each scene. it’s one of the few movies that he actually watches back.)

☆ clair de lune - claude debussy (a simple, sweet, popular classic. he likes to pay attention to the rippling pattern of the right hand and allows it to envelope him in a comforting “brain hug.” it was one of the first pieces he heard when he was younger and it inspired him to delve deeper into music as a whole. his mother played piano, and he sits and recalls the amount of times that it’s lulled him to sleep in his younger years.)

this one was so relaxing omg. i feel like morgan is a super calming presence as a whole—i mean, he relaxed me really effectively in his recent audio. he’s a sweet, awkward music nerd (imo) that also happens to see the future. i’m so excited to see how his character is developed further in his story :).

as for his appearance being seokjin and associating him with the color purple, i have absolutely no clue. call it a vibe check. it just felt correct 😭 i will def be doing more of these when the inspo arises :p

The Freezing Wrath of a God

Nearly as soon as Vizerxa stepped foot into the main room of the Bright Palace, she froze, both afraid and furious.

Ezeri, her older adopted child, was huddled against the wall, sheltering a sobbing Xicuri, Vizerxa's younger child. Ezeri was looking up fearfully at Light Song, who was glaring down at them, growling.

It didn't take a genius to guess that Light Song had tried to hurt the children; she probably attempted to use them as test subjects to improve Deathclaw poison further. The commotion had attracted the attention of most of the major members of the Fallen; Star Seer was standing behind Light Song, hesitant and uncertain what to do, Amatus and Blood Moon were watching indifferently, Snow Sky and Aella seemed worried, and Path Changer was standing back, frowning.

The agonized screams of a dying child still haunted her thoughts. She wouldn't let it happen again.

Vizerxa strides over, shoving Light Song back and standing in front of her children protectively, hissing at the shorter Deity.

"Stand back, Mortem," Light Song ordered, eyes narrowing. She'd punish Vizerxa for this simple move either way.

Vizerxa had stood blocking the door to the lab and dungeons, watching silently as Light Song had slashed Lucidi's face for even questioning her after Genesis's murder.

Never again.

"Get away from my children," Vizerxa snapped back, standing protectively, her glare freezing cold.

"What?" Light Song stepped forward instead, raising her hand that had the Deathclaw syringe. Vizerxa knew how this would end, she may as well gain something from her own suffering.

"I said. Get. Back," Vizerxa commands, summoning a dagger and taking a defensive stance, her crystal wings curse forming again, the shattered purple 'wings' spread wide in protection of the children behind her.

Every one of the countless red 'threads' between the shattered, bloody crystals represented someone that died because of Vizerxa's actions. She'll only let one more person die because of her, and that person was right in front of her.

Light Song lunged forward, stabbing the needle of the syringe into Vizerxa's neck before she could dodge. Vizerxa hisses, slashing at Light Song, cutting through the tyrant's arm, enjoying the sight of Light Song's crimson blood spraying across the white floors. Amatus tries to run forward to defend Light Song, but Aella holds him back.

Almost as soon as the poison entered her blood stream, Vizerxa could feel the agony spreading. Burning yet freezing, slashing and stabbing. It made her want to tear her skin off, claw it out of her own blood, scream and thrash and just get it out.

She could feel her legs buckle and her vision blurring, the dagger in her hand clattering to the ground, crystalline wings falling and fading. All the sound around her becoming a dull ringing but she focused on Light Song. The electric ice blue eyes that haunted her nightmares. The snowy hair that made her despise her own corruption.

Instead of falling, Vizerxa grabbed Light Song's face with one hand and her shoulder with the other. She didn't even notice the tears falling down her face from her agony, or how labored her breathing got, or the crooked and pained grin that spread across her own face, or even how ice cracked and spread across the ground under her and across Light Song's skin, where Vizerxa's nails dug in hard enough to draw blood.

"*Stay the fuck away from my family. I'll be the one to kill you, I'll watch your blood spill across the snow and the light fade from your eyes. I swear to Merivu, you'll be dead by my hand and mine only,*" Vizerxa hisses, gaze fixed only on Light Song's eyes. Every breath was agony. She could feel her own skin frosting over from her powers going haywire, and she could feel Light Song's blood freezing on her fingers.

Before she could do or say anything else, Vizerxa's mind went fuzzy and sight her sight faded to black as she lost consciousness, losing to the poison in her system. She collapsed before she could notice the fear flickering in Light Song's eyes.

After a few long moments, Snow Sky stepped forward, carefully walking across the frozen floor, and picks up the unconscious deity. It was terrifying, really, to see someone, especially Vizerxa's, gaze so intense and hateful when she should have been unable to move or even think. Vizerxa was ice cold in Snow Sky's arms, and she winced slightly as she feels her own arms begin to rapidly frost over where she was in contact with Vizerxa.

"... I'll tend to Light Song, you take Vizerxa to her room, " Star Seer finally says, "Path Changer, take Ezeri and Xicuri to the Library."

Even Amatus had stopped struggling against Aella. It was shocking to see someone do what nearly all of them had thought of. Aella, Path Changer, and Snow Sky exchanged a glance, fearing what Vizerxa's fate will be once she wakes up.

Snow Sky turns away, walking down the crystalline hallway towards Vizerxa's room, while Path Changer coaxes the spooked children to follow her, and Star Seer guided Light Song to the infirmary to see how much damage Vizerxa had done.
