The real insult, Edgin thought, as the rest of his mind turned to jelly, was how fucking small the dragon was.
This was his first encounter with a faerie dragon, and he hadn't taken the whole thing very seriously. A bright green dragon no larger than a cat, cooped up in some miller's chimney? It barely felt worth the coin, not that he told the miller that.
The dragon, however, had other ideas. They'd managed to wrangle it outside thanks to some keen shapeshifting from Doric, but as soon as she'd gotten it through the front door and into Ed's arms it had hit him with an enormous blast of glittering fae magic.
Ed was no stranger to Euphoria Breath - there were bars in all the seedier spots of Neverwinter that sold a concentrated hit of the stuff for a reasonable fee - but he'd never had it straight from the source.
The last lucid thought that passed through his head before his knees hit the floor was oh, this is pretty good.
They gathered around the stricken bard, no one keen to get too close. No one had any idea what to do.
“I’m sure Xenk has something up his sleeve,” Simon said, pleadingly. “Right, Xenk?”
Xenk gave him a long look. “I assure you,” he said, “the only thing up my sleeves is my arms.”
From the floor, Ed made a choking noise.
“He speaks!” Xenk was beside him in a blink, grabbing his shoulders. “Speak to me, my dearest friend, or has some foul scourge taken thy tongue?”
Ed stared at him, unfocused. Behind Xenk’s shoulder, Holga rolled her eyes. Ed opened his mouth.
“Speak!” Xenk commanded.
“Wh—”
It was no more than a broken whisper. Xenk moved closer. “What is it, my friend?”
“Where—” Ed took a deep breath that collapsed in upon itself. His eyes had gone red, watering with the effort of speaking. “Where does— where— Xenk—”
“Yes, Edgin?”
Ed hauled himself to his elbows unsteadily. “Xenk…”
“I am with you.”
“Where…” he took another, gasping breath, like a man drowning. “Where does Xenk keep his armies?”
Xenk blinked at him. He had never had the honour of command, nor did he have the inclination.
“Your mind has been rattled by the scourge,” he said. “You must rest, and hope that you may—”
“Up his sleevies!”
Holga burst into snorting laughs. Ed looked thrilled, laughing until tears rolled down his cheeks. Even Doric began to giggle.
“I—” Xenk was lost. “I am not sure I understand your riddle, Edgin.”
Edgin clapped his shoulder, gripping tight. “Up his sleevies,” he breathed. When Xenk did not respond, he slumped back down with a groan.  “Fucking harp—”
And then he swooned clean away.

Storm Soldier (Monster)
Tumblr media
(Art by Anonynmous)
(I considered playing coy with my inspiration here, but let's be clear with it- this a fantasy 40k Space Marine, played not as protagonists but as tragic yet terrifying monsters for the more humanist playgroups most of my RPG experience belongs to. Statting them up as monsters, in my mind, helps distance players from the power fantasy of it; if you ever wanted a ragtag pack of underdogs to bring those marty stu marines down a peg, well, here's a monster to kill! And you if you want a sad little war machine your players can adopt and deprogram, it's the same deal.
By the way, I have them statted up as scattered force that can be dropped into any setting, but I'd love to use them as the terrifying enforcers of one of the more powerful political players in a world, like they are in 40k.)
CR8 LE Large Monstrous Humanoid
Also called storm marines, storm dragoons, and thunder warriors, storm soldiers are the result of painful fleshwarping techniques being used on young human soldiers, turning them into massive and obedient soldiers. Unlike with the creations of the drow, it is generally humans of a storm soldier's own culture who turn them into such monsters- leaders who value them more as weapons than as people. The process is traumatic and violent, and involves not only reshaping the flesh, but conditioning the mind to be loyal soldiers before all else. This leaves the storm soldier with a distant sense of her past life and a lot of buried trauma. They are functionally immortal, and often outlive the regime which created them. Storm soldiers are difficult to create, and those who do tend to spread their soldiers thin, with one or two storm soldiers assigned to a squad of mundane soldiers as linebreakers, guardians, and support.
This is not always the case, however. Centuries ago, a powerful shaman amassed a legion of these soldiers in a harebrained attempt to take over the world and unite it under his idea of order. His forces, however, became fractured- although sources differ on how, with some claiming the influence of a specific breed of fiend, and others believing it was a mundane power struggle. The result of this fracture was the death of the shaman, along with most of his generals, and the small remains of his forces scattered to the corners of the world. To this day they live in deadly xenophobic warbands; in particular, they have a hatred for elves, orks, and skeletons, although most still clash with each other in echoes of the original split.
Storm giants notably have a strong emotional reaction to storm soldiers; evil groups of giants typically do what they can to scourge them of the earth, but good-aligned storm giants tend to feel extreme pity and often attempt rehabilitation of storm soldiers. Younger storm soldiers (that is, less than a couple hundred years old) are often a success in this endeavor, but those as ancient as the shaman’s army are almost universally too far gone.
Some rulers believe that storm soldiers can only be created out of men, although this is generally considered to be a laughable falsehood.
This hulking woman wields a massive shield and weighty warhammer. She towers over her companions, and her eyes are leaking a glowing fluid. most of the established lore for the unicorn character is up in the air and very subject to change as i can't write nico's book until im finished mvf but i can talk about some details. the unicorn is a horse with notions of lording it over a beautiful territory with 10 spouses. in order to get those spouses he has tried his best over the years to be charming to random boaters on lough cánamac but mostly just succeeded in scaring them away. his personality is as slimy as his mane and fur, it's safe to say he is a creep who's compliments to strangers are always just a little bit off, maybe too sexual, or too personal, revealing information that the other person never publicly stated. so after years of failure, rotting away in the deep scourge of the lough's barrow, our unicorn hero chose another option. he was going to tempt away people instead, like the Púca would, and establish his new husbands and wives in his watery estate by force.
The major plot hook of the story - what Nico must investigate - is whether or not the unicorn exists, and whether the faery kidnapping people is the Púca or someone else (it's both)

Faerie Fort Week Day Seven -- Knight (I also went for the alt "Role Reversal" prompt as well.)
Only 'Til the Night is Over
The first time the King of the North sees the Shadow Knight, he is— he will admit— taken aback.
The reason they are even meeting in the first place is at his Hand's insistence. Martyn is from the Land of Faerie originally (some kind of wood sprite, if he recalls correctly), and with the Ender incursions growing in scale and severity, his silver-tongued Hand finally managed to convince him that it was at least worth entering into treaty negotiations with other lands in order to bolster their forces. Not to mention, Martyn had said, I have some family connections that may help.
Ren still thinks their army will be just fine for quite some time, but he is a reasonable man, and the less men his army loses, the better. They are on the front line, as his kingdom runs right up to the abyssal drop where the Ender invaders have been emerging in waves— the first and best bastion against the voidborn.
So a delegation from Faerie has been sent to the North. At their head is the infamous Shadow Knight, general of a hundred victories and scourge of the undead. Three pale wolves keep pace alongside her jet-black gelding, often disappearing among the snow drifts that cover his kingdom. Her banners fly high and flap merrily with the wind: a sigil of lilies in gold on a black field. But the thing that catches his attention, as he watches their arrival from the battlements, wrapped in his warmest fur-lined red cloak, is the Shadow Knight's hair: pink as the sunrise, and running down her back all the way to the saddle like a river. The polished steel of her armor catches the sun both shining down and reflecting off the snow, and the effect as a whole is dazzling. He stays out, watching, until the gate has shut behind the whole delegation, and then returns inside.
-o0o-
The second time the King of the North sees the Shadow Knight, he is once again surprised. This time it's because she is a good deal shorter than he expects. He wouldn't dare underestimate her, of course— her reputation speaks much too loudly for that— but he's sure he must be nearly half again her height. She's changed from her armor into an elegant blue dress, though she has an ornamental sword-belt— and sword— still buckled around her waist. Two of her retainers follow behind her: a man with a green streak in his dark brown hair and mage's robes, and a tall woman with a powerful build, pale, green-tinged skin, and hair as red as fire, who also has a sword-belt to accompany her navy blue dress.
"Lady Lizabet!" Martyn exclaims from his place at the foot of the dais that holds Ren's throne. He hurries forward to greet her. "It's been too long, dear cousin." He kisses her cheek and grins, and the Shadow Knight smiles, though she rolls her eyes as she does.
"It's good to see thee whole, cousin," she replies. "I see thou hast not frozen solid in this wasteland yet."
"Not yet," Martyn says, and Ren can't hold back his snort of laughter. It draws the two faeries' attention, and Martyn steps to the side, bowing. "Your Majesty," he says. "May I present to you Lady Lizabet of Faerie, the Shadow Knight, Scourge of the Undead and Guardian of the Realm; Lady Cleo of Faerie, the Twice-Lived; and Magister Beans of the College of Enchanters."
The Shadow Knight curtsies, and her two retainers follow suit.
"We welcome you all to our court," says the King of the North, and the delegation rises to their feet.
"So, Your Majesty," Lady Lizabet begins, her head held high and something like a challenge in her voice. "What is it the mighty Kingdom of the North could want from the Land of Faerie? One does not often hear of the Red King asking for help.”
Magister Beans winces behind Lady Lizabet. Lady Cleo grins, resting one hand on the hilt of her sword and the other on her hip.
Ren only looks down at her, one eyebrow raised. She’s taking an awfully confrontational stance for a delegation meant to be negotiating a treaty. He’ll keep calm, for now— though she may be antagonizing him, he can’t really afford to do the same to her. “Then you know it is important,” he says gravely, “since we do not often ask.”
Lady Lizabet inclines her head, and Ren feels as though he's passed some kind of test.
"We need aid. Military aid," he says, fingers drumming on the arm of his throne. "While our army stands strong against the voidborn for now, the Long Night grows ever closer, and soon they will be able to rally others to strike against us from the abyss. Our army may be good," he says, and meets Lady Lizabet's eyes directly, "but they are only human. And we prefer to avoid the loss of life when we can."
Lady Lizabet considers this. "And what could you give the Land of Faerie in return?"
He exchanges a glance with Martyn. They'd discussed this at length, both in private and with the privy council, and finally landed on something that the Hand said would certainly be tempting. "We will offer our netherwort to all merchants from the Land of Faerie at a steep discount. And of course, if you come to our aid, we also will come to yours, with the full might of the North." Assuming we survive the coming onslaught, he doesn't say aloud, but he's sure the Shadow Knight knows. Netherwort, though, grows exclusively in the North, and is a key ingredient in many popular potions. Surely she cannot turn down such a deal.
Magister Beans leans forward, whispering excitedly into Lady Lizabet's ear, and Ren presses his lips together to keep from smiling in triumph. He's got at least one of them hooked, and that's what he needs. The delegation confers for a few moments, and Ren waits patiently.
Finally, Lady Lizabet steps forward. "I have been granted by the King and Queen the ability to make treaties in their name. If we can have the terms in writing and witnessed, I will accept this deal," she pronounces.
"Then we will see it done," says Ren, and motions to Magister Bigbi, his chief scribe and notary, who he had prepare something in advance.
He presses his seal to the blood-red wax at the bottom of the treaty, then waits as all three faeries carefully read it over. Then Lady Lizabet presses her lily seal below his, and a courier is dispatched to the Land of Faerie.
"Now that that's settled," says Ren. "We offer you the opportunity to join us at our table this evening."
"Only this evening?" Lady Lizabet asks, raising an eyebrow.
"Aren't you leaving for Faerie as well?"
The Shadow Knight laughs, and just like out in the snow, her hair catches the light of the torches, sunset-pink and glorious as it spills over her shoulders. "Ah, Your Majesty, I think you have been under a misapprehension. We are the advance guard. We are here to fight for you."
Ren is taken aback once again. It's becoming something of a familiar experience, faced with the Shadow Knight. "Well, then, you are welcome as long as you are here," he says finally, and gestures for Martyn to lead the way to the Great Hall for the evening meal.
-o0o-
Ren encounters the Shadow Knight on the Wall overlooking the abyss one night, far past the hour any reasonable person should be awake.
"Lady Knight," he says, when he comes around the corner and nearly runs into her, his hands coming up automatically to steady her arms.
"Your Majesty," she replies. "And why are you wandering the Wall so late at night?"
"We could ask the same question of you," he says, raising an eyebrow.
"It's my duty to defend this Wall, I've a right to be on it when I like," she answers, lifting her chin. "And must you do that?"
"Do what?"
"It's just us, you know, Your Majesty. I should think we've done enough strategizing into the wee hours of the morning that you could be a little less formal, you know. I'm sure you don't go around saying We hereby proclaim such-and-such when you're speaking with my dear cousin."
The bark of laughter that leaves Ren's mouth is unexpected and much louder than he meant it to be— both he and Lady Lizabet peer into the abyss, searching for any sign that the noise has disturbed any Ender forces. When nothing happens, he lets the smile return to his face and crosses his arms. "If you continue to refer to us as Your Majesty, we are, of course, expected to reply in kind."
She looks unimpressed. "Sure. All right, Ren."
He feels his teasing smile soften into something a little sweeter. It's been a long time since anyone other than Martyn has called him by name. And she does have a point: they've both seen each other almost too tired for words but still trying to plan on multiple occasions over the past weeks now— occasions where the rest of the war council had already retired for the night, leaving only them to argue strategy.
He enjoys those discussions with the Shadow Knight— it is there he can see her terrifying reputation is well-founded. (Well, that and when she takes to the sparring ring with Lady Cleo.) Together they have managed to draw up a plan to withstand the coming siege, and it has given him— not optimism, necessarily, but at least some hope for the future.
"Lady Knight," he says now. "I'm still waiting for an answer to my question. Don't you sleep?"
Her smile, a pale flash in the darkness, is tired. "Not often."
"Yet another thing you and I have in common, I suppose," he comments, leaning on the outer edge of the Wall and peering down into the fathomless depths. "I'm pretty sure the guards out here have worked me into their rotation at this point."
"One can never be too alert, I always say," she says, stepping forward to join him. "Also if I'm calling you by name, I suppose it's only fair you call me by mine. It's Lizzie, among friends."
"Are we? Friends, I mean?" Ren asks, startled. Perhaps there will be a day the Shadow Knight doesn't surprise him, but that day has yet to come.
"I just said so, didn't I?" She crosses her arms. "Unless you'd rather—"
"No!" he blurts out, rather gracelessly. "I would be glad to be your friend— Lizzie." He trips over the name, stripped of all titles or formality, but the full force of her smile turned on him makes him forget all his hesitation.
They talk a little while longer— though if someone asked him to recall the conversation, Ren wouldn't have been able to tell them what they spoke of, only that it had happened. He'd paid more attention to Lizzie— her teasing smile, her steadfast belief that the North would survive the Long Night, the way she said his name, like it was nothing out of the ordinary.
When the sun begins to show her face over the high northern peaks, however, they both realize they ought to at least get some sleep.
"I'll let thee go," Ren says through a half-restrained yawn. "It's early— or late, rather."
Lizzie's eyes widen, though only for a moment, as Ren does his best to hold back another yawn. "Well, I hope thou find'st rest for at least a couple hours," she says, and curtsies once before she leaves.
It is only after she is long gone, and he is back in the comfort of his room for a few short hours, that what he said to her finally registers, and he slumps back against his pillows.
He's a fool— but she responded in kind, at least. She didn't take offense to his horrible lack of manners.
He'll have to apologize.
…After he gets some sleep.
-o0o-
The opportunity to apologize for running slipshod all over the bounds of propriety never seems to materialize, however, because word comes from the farthest guard towers that there is a storm brewing in the west, and it is rapidly approaching; it will arrive in the next few days, just before the Long Night. Now, Ren isn't worried about the weather (though it's certainly not good) so much as he is what the cloud cover will allow— he knows if he were the Ender commander, and he were mobilizing a force of night-bound creatures, he would jump on the opportunity to strike early immediately.
The army is readied as fast as they can manage, and Ren is grateful that Lizzie pushed hard against the King and Queen of Faerie's hesitation to send forces in the name of integrating and training together for better defense— if the original plan had been followed, the Faerie force would only just now be arriving, and he has a feeling their defenses would not be so solid as they are currently.
The howling of the oncoming snowstorm two days later is pierced by the shrieking of phantoms, and the entire fortress braces for what is coming. Ren stands at the top of the keep, armor on and battle-axe in hand. Martyn is down on the lower wall, he knows, though he cannot see him from here. Lady Cleo, the Twice-Lived, is down on the front lines with her infantrymen— Ren can just barely see her in her black armor, towering over everyone. Magister Beans is with the contingent of mages.
And the Shadow Knight is standing at his side, surveying the field.
"We ought to be down there," she says, scowling.
"I will not disagree," he says mildly. "But my Hand might."
"It's silly," she continues, as though he hasn't said anything.
"Sillier if we both get killed and leave the army leaderless," he points out.
She rounds on him, one eyebrow raised dangerously.
"Lizzie," he says, trying to keep his tone even. "I do not want to be up here away from the fight any more than you do." He glances at the sky again; the snow runs like waves, coming to crash on the shores of the abyss, and he can see the dark shapes of phantoms and their riders swooping in the clouds' shadow. "But I think we will have other things to worry about."
"Thou hast the right of it," she mutters, and reaches for her bow, leaning against her leg. She nocks, sights, and releases, and a phantom goes plummeting down from the sky.
"Did that mak'st thou feel better?" Ren says, a ghost of a teasing note in his voice.
"Well, Your Majesty, I did swear to protect thee," she says. "I can do that, at least."
"Only until the Long Night is over," he says, and he can't lie— there's a heaviness that settles over his heart at the thought. Even if they both survive this siege, she will go back to the Land of Faerie, back to her normal life, before he interrupted it. He's grown accustomed to her presence. He'll have to unlearn those habits.
Lizzie turns to look at him, lowering her bow, and she surprises him once again. "I'll stay as long as thou wilt have me, Ren," she says, and her voice is grave.
"And if I ask thee to never leave?"
"Then I won't," she says, simply. "To the death."
"To the death," he agrees.
And they turn to face the oncoming tide.
and that's all, folks! (only a couple days late haha) thank you @faeriefort-daily for organizing this event and putting up the prompt lists! it's been a ton of fun <3

Into the GuyLoboVerse: Day 17
Earth 1999: Neopets AU
A rowdy TYRANNIAN KRAWK by the name of GUY GARDNER has crossed paths with the feared WHITE GELERT, LOBO, scourge of NEOCOLA CENTRE. Will they be friends? Will they be foes? Will they cause enough havok to get the DEFENDERS of NEOPIA after them? Or will a quiet evening in the HAUNTED WOODS satisfy them? The whole of NEOPIA is at their disposal.
Author's Notes:
Not sure which of my AUs is the most self indulgent but this one is definitely in the running. Spawned from noticing that the Stealthy Gelert design had a hook on the end of its tail, I decided that I had to make a customization design for Lobo and it spiraled from there.
The clothes they're wearing are edited versions of actual in game clothing items. Realizing that the Battle Faerie Vest was similar to Guy's GL vest was especially nice.
I actually managed to make their customizations on my personal neopets account (minus two of the foreground items I wanted for Lobo's but that would take 13.5 million np to get)

Fate & Phantasms Viewers' Choice
it's that time once again, the time where we all gather to pick a build to show up next month! to help give the smaller name options a better chance, we'll be making a blurb for each of them before the actual poll.
first up is Riesbyfe Stridberg, from Melty Blood. She's a holy knight who cheated death thanks to her shield, Gamaliel, and as such she could be considered Mash's senpai in shielding. it also keeps her from aging, so that's a fun addition to add for no reason, and makes her much easier to build. thanks, nasu!
Edgar Figaro from Final Fantasy 6 is a master inventor and brother to the most jacked motherfucker in FF history. some of his inventions include an automatic crossbow, a medieval chainsaw, an "Air Anchor", which is some kind of explosive... grappling... arm... thing. he also decked his whole castle out with the ability to tunnel underground, but we won't cover that in the build. probably a caster.
Don Quixote, however, is a lancer. that we know for sure. he was completely delusional, thought himself a knight, and rode around the countryside helping people with problems they didn't have. and then FGO made his whole thing even weirder by making his sidekick and love interest his horse. Still, he's always willing to give his all, and that's what matters in the end.
Simo Hayha is from real life! as one of the most popular options from last month's poll I doubt he needs much introduction. a Finnish sniper from WW2, he became known as the White Death thanks to his incredible skills at camouflage and the fact that he killed roughly 500 enemy soldiers. over 100 days. in the Finnish winter. he is considered one of the greatest snipers of all time, and is more than qualified to be one of the few members of the Archer class from modern days.
Genghis Khan is also from history, though not quite as recent. I know Altera already exists, but tbf the real deal Scourge of God could easily qualify as most classes with or without the sci-fi overhaul he got in Fate. like, the number of people he killed had a measurable impact on global warming, he should probably have like, an Artoria of servant classes by now. (yes, that is what a group of servants is called)
Koyanskaya of Light is a weird one, in no small part due to the fact that her big story chapter hasn't shown up in NA yet. still, she's an arms dealer, and this one's focused more on hurting humans than her other side, so we should be able to manage fine. bullets and rifles and tanks, oh my!
and finally, we have Oberon. what is there to say about Oberon? he's totally Oberon. the very first Pretender is a faerie, so that alone would give him all sorts of fun nonsense to play with, but he specializes with putting people to sleep and messing with their heads.

𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 : asteria amell , dragon age: origins
overview: in the world of thedas, the darkspawn are orc-like creatures who dwell in an underground network of tunnels known as the deep roads. every few centuries, they rise to the surface in a hive-mind attack led by an archdemon. these apocalyptic scourges are known as the blight. out of the darkspawn's tainted essence, enhanced warriors known as the grey wardens were created to kill the archdemon and put a stop to the blight no matter the cost. it has been over 400 years since the last blight, but the fifth blight finally takes root in the country of ferelden. asteria is a newly initiated mage who was conscripted into the order at the eve of the first battle against the blight. political treachery lost them the battle and killed the king of ferelden, as well as nearly all the grey wardens. only asteria and alistair survived. with ferelden's borders closed and political ambitions still taking precedence, these two rookies and their motley crew of unlikely companions are thedas' last hope to stop the blight before it spreads beyond control.
CANON VERSES.
✧ origins : the events of the first game unfold and ultimately end with asteria being the warden who kills the archdemon. she survives the ordeal albeit changed, having incidentally absorbed the archdemon's soul unto her own, a fact that is evident to anyone who sees her violet eyes (as further explained here). [ alt. companion verse ] asteria can be picked up (or snuck out) during the circle tower crisis and join the warden's party. afterwards, she'd either live as an apostate mage or request to join the wardens as a new recruit during awakening. [ full bio ]
✧ awakening / da: 2 : asteria becomes the new warden commander of ferelden tasked with rebuilding the order. however, tensions are high as her survival and rumors of her absorbing the archdemon's soul brew resentment among the ranks. after she vanquishes the darkspawn threat in amaranthine, tensions begin to smooth over. she establishes the silver order and comes the new arlessa of amaranthine (although actively seeking a means to separate the two roles). when the mage-templar war starts, asteria receives an influx of mage and templar refugees alike seeking to join the order. she sets out looking for a cure for the taint so that those who chose this path in desperation could someday reverse it. ( a good crossover verse, since asta's search can take her to all sorts of places even outside of thedas )
✧ inquisition : my default is that asteria gave up her search for the cure and went straight to skyhold upon learning of the breach from a wisp in the fade. this happens sometime after warden commander clarel and the wardens of orlais are killed. after adamant, she becomes the temporary warden commander for the surviving orlesians and leads them in tandem with ferelden's warden forces against corypheus, should the inquisitor accept their aid.
AU VERSES.
✧ greek myth : asteria is the titan goddess of fallen stars and nocturnal oracles. she was a commander leading her father's northern celestial forces during the titanomachy, but was spared from being locked away in tartarus by her daughter, hekate's appeal. after being pursued by zeus, asteria fled to the underworld, and has been nyx's ward ever since. [ full bio ]
✧ dnd / critical role : asteria is the matron of ravens who presides over fate, winter, memories, and death. she was a mortal mage during the age of arcana, but ascended into her position after killing the previous death god. her name and her story has been wiped from historical memory. any remaining legends about her are varied and conflicting, but the one thing that is certain is that she has a disdain for orcus, the demon prince of undeath (or koschei if we decide to integrate his au here too). she actively seeks champions to defeat his undead forces and cult followers.
✧ fae verse : asteria is a faerie from the unseelie court and/or winter court. lots of flexibility here, but my default is affiliated with maeinade's unseelie queen, whom asteria assisted in usurping the previous monarch. she also has a proclivity for sorcery outside of faerie magic that she doesn't frequently employ in fear that it could raise suspicions that she isn't fully fae. [alt. acotar verse] also flexible. default is that asteria is illyrian, secretly a witch, and was one of the girls who joined the ranks in book 3. she fights in the battle against hybern, and uses her magic to save some but unfortunately not all of the illyrians who were caught in the cauldron blast.
DOSSIER
name. asteria amell diminutives. asta pronouns. she/her titles. champion of redcliffe, hero of ferelden, warden-commander of ferelden, arlessa of amaranthine (verse dependent) age. 19 (during origins), 31 (during da:i) origin. free marcher (w/avvar roots), identifies as ferelden etymology. human mage, spirit medium (spirit of command incarnate)* sexuality. bisexual alignment. chaotic good / neutral
relations. revka amell ( mother, presumed dead ), aerick ( biological father, presumed dead ), ethan amell ( father, deceased ), leticia amell ( half-sister, deceased ), diana amell ( half-sister, deceased ), apollonius amell ( half-brother, deceased ), hawke (cousin, alive)
height. 5'7" build. athletic & mesomorph hair. black & smooth as a river stone, usually kept back in a long braid. eyes. originally blue; now an unnatural violet scars. multiple faint scars, but the most prominent one is from the arrow she took at the tower of ishal. it sits right on her left shoulder, just below her collarbone, about the size of a coin and shaped like a gnarled silver star. there's an identical one on her left shoulder blade where the arrow pierced through. scents. rosemary, deathroot blossoms, & bergamot.
abilities / skillset .
entropy & necromancy specialization.  the school of entropy deals with spells that attack the life force of an enemy and includes: creating death clouds to drain life energy (which can be absorbed to heal herself & companions), drawing residual spirit energy from the surrounding dead to replenish mana, paralyzing, disorienting, spirit bombing etc. necromancy allows her to call on and bind spirits from the fade to dead corpses and command them to attack on her behalf.
spirit medium . not a specialization that can be learned, but one she was born with. mages can interact with spirits and demons in the fade in their dreams, by physically summoning them with spells, or through their possessed vehicles, but spirit mediums are mages who have one foot in each of the two worlds. they can see through the veil and communicate with the beings on the other side at any given moment.
grey warden abilities . wardens undergo a ritual (the joining) where they infuse darkspawn blood (the taint) with their own. this grants them: enhanced strength, durability, immunity to blighted illness, ability to sense when darkspawn are near, a connection to the darkspawn hivemind controlled by archdemons during a blight. typically, the archdemon can be seen & heard through dreams
archdemon soul absorption . after absorbing the archdemon's soul in the final boss battle, asteria essentially became an archmage, with an increased capacity for mana storage. she refuses to tap into that extra powerbank for a variety of reasons
restrictions .
other schools of magic . asteria was one of the top students of her class in the circle, and had to learn all the schools of magic at some capacity, but in the years since she's become a warden, she's been out of practice, and relies almost exclusively on entropy & necromancy if not her weapons.
high risk of possession. as a spirit medium, she can see through the veil in the waking word, but likewise those entities can see her. demons are often drawn to mediums like magnets and chisel away at their peace until their will is weak enough for a possession.
the calling . while the joining grants wardens increased abilities, it does not come without consequence. the taint is a poison which corrupts and overtime her mind will become more darkspawn than warden. this process is known as the calling. eventually through delusions it draws a warden to the deeproads where they are sure to meet their death or worse. it usually takes up to 30 years after a joining to hear the calling, but wardens, like asteria, who are active during a blight have this process accelerated, bringing it closer to 10 years.
archdemon soul absorption: although asteria has an increased mana powerbank to draw from, she still has a human body and to tap into that powerbank will take a massive toll on her physically. to draw on it completely might actually kill her.
themes. battle cry, imagine dragons / ezio's family, assassin's creed / to the stars, tyler bates / female robbery, the neighbourhood
