(not really) poorly explaining every single rhymix character's backstory (to the best of my ability) (part 1)

1. Ars Cantate

prince who gets gem that has been passed down from generations to generations by his parents. experiences torture through his evil shadow self. suffers from there.

2. Lucas

really wants to get out of his home nation for god knows how long but can't because the people around him are holding him back so he turns to his best friend (who is still unnamed for now fuck) to help him. ends up getting betrayed by said best friend but manages to escape by himself.

3. Ana

gets backstabbed and used multiple times by others so she decided that, "if they dug her grave, then she'll dig up theirs too."

4. Fate

doesn't have an interesting enough backstory she's just there.

5. Testify/Eternity

was jealous of amazing mighty so she wished that she could have her own nation so that she can finally know what it feels like to be a leader. her wish somehow came true and memoria was a thing lol. also many many centuries later she has beef with tempestissimo and kills him and then regrets it and revives him and becomes eternity. i will elaborate this in detail one day for i am Still fleshing this one out lmao.

6. Galactic

was really upbeat and was besties with spinel but then spinel went missing and then she went cold ooooooooo so so sadddddd

7. Destonio

HOW DID I NEARLY FORGET HIM I'M CRYING. anyways he experiences pain and agony for a few years and gets revealed of The Horrors Of The World™ and grows to hate it. met lumine and was starting to slowly heal but then lumine fucking killed herself and then he became miserable again. ends up killing himself too and then amazing mighty made him a god. good fucking lord.

8. Felicia

no real backstory nothing interesting about her other than she met dahlia and experiences what it feels like to feel Yurious.

9. Dahlia

attempted to off herself but then got stopped/saved by felicia. she then experiences what it feels like to feel Yurious.

10. Dawn

girl finds out about hikaru (who was a popular idol at the time) and then idolizes him and swears to be just like him one day. ends up achieving her goal in the end, but by the time that happened hikaru was already "dead" (or...yk, became a god).

11. Raven

i can't think of one for her yet. i'll think of something eventually. next.

12. Risa

was an angel but then certain events that i have not fleshed out on happened and then she was sentenced to not be an angel any longer and then ends up on rhymix with zero recollection of what happened prior and zero memory of who she is.

13. Unknown Levels

some guy created him but then deemed him unworthy so he just left UL in his old workshop and fucked off to elsewhere. unknown levels was only left with a note saying "main objective of creation: destroy" or something like that idfk.

14. Abstruse Dilemma

raised to be the perfect ruler to the kingdom his parents ruled over at the time, but that gave him pressure and even more depression and anxiety oooooooo. arghena then comes into memoria and snatches him lmao. but don't worry he comes back eventually.

15. Primeval Texture

a bunch of scientists made an experiment using a bunch of elemental pieces of various textures and then conjoined them together to become one. but then those pieces became primeval and she wasn't the result they had hoped for (for whatever reason????) so they discarded her and then she was found by a family and then she got adopted into it yayayayayayaayayayaya

16. Technicolour

used to be such a cheerful kid who loved his family and friends so much. lived in a relatively small neighbourhood that eventually got fucking destroyed in an accident involving the higher ups. before that happened tho techni got sealed away in his protection cube that's in some sort of realm by his father and then boom. he's stuck there for most of his childhood and teenage years. sad. but he gets out thanks to primeval and stasis eventually so yayyyyy

17. Logos

lives in a rich and wealthy family but thinks it isn't worth it since she felt like this isn't the life she sought out for. eventually went on a walk during the rain and found abstruse drenched and alone like a sopping wet cat lmao. eventually becomes friends with him :)

18. Ego Eimi

was a normal angel in heaven until she accidentally did something that she didn't know would be considered a sin. proceeds to get kicked out of heaven and becomes a fallen angel and then she swears she'll get back there eventually.

19. Arghena

random ass bitch from another universe that is NOT rhymix who tries her hardest to appeal to other people in many ways possible, especially at school back then. but nobody noticed her efforts and she then felt like a loser nobody who no one gives a shit about. she then found out she has the ability to look into other universes and then sees abstruse and immediately gets jealous of him because he is everything that she is not. so she travels from universe to universe to find him. eventually comes into rhymix, fucking KIDNAPS ABSTRUSE, AND THEN SETS UP A NEW OBJECTIVE FOR HERSELF: "i'm gonna dethrone amazing mighty lmaooooooo"

20. Transient Space

doesn't have an interesting backstory. youch.

21. Nameless Passion

born from arghena's really weird desires. lmao.

22. TeraVolt

nothing interesting about her she's a FUCKING THUNDER GODDESS FOR FUCK'S SAKE.

23. Tempo

his life is so boring lmao. he made shifta because he wanted to test his coding and building up a robot skills.

24. Shifta

created by tempo so that he can test his coding and building up a robot skills. oh and also so that she can aid and help others and do combat and shit i guess. look i scrapped the thunderriders okay what do you want me to do with their backstories now.

25. Trojan

MALWARE VIRUS TURNED HUMAN WHO CAN GLITCH IN AND OUT OF REALITY AND IS REALLY GAY AND KIND OF TWO FACED. OH MY GOD THIS SOUNDS MORE LIKE ME POORLY DESCRIBING HIS CHARACTER THAN HIS BACKSTORY BUT SHHHHH MOVING ON.

26. Callima Karma

nothing much to say about her. L.

27. Pamolia

shy and timid girl who keeps getting bullied at school no matter if it's middle school or high school. eventually met pupa one day and was really freaked out at first but then accepts him either way. more will be elaborated and shown in side story 4.

28. Pupa/Larva

guardian spirit for pamolia who was originally a normal girl who liked bugs just as much as pamolia did but then got MURDERED BY MANTIS BECAUSE HE HAD TO. FUCK. anyways more of his whole relationship with pamolia will be elaborates and shown in side story 4.

29. Tempestissimo/Momento

was a devil from hell who then did a good deed which is Not what devils were supposed to do so he gets kicked out. ends up in memoria and is scared shitless because he keeps seeing memories of conflict reflected on the glass butterflies and then grows cold and hostile and needs to hurt someone NOW. eventually has beef with testify and then gets killed by her but then she regrets it so then she revived him and then he becomes momento. also now he goes by he/she good for her.

30. Conflict

nothing interesting she's just there i guess whoops.

31. (Jak)Arta

was friends with hikaru but then had to move away and then had slight beef with hikaru about it and then ends up moving away either way but then felt guilty about it. weeks later he finds out hikaru's dead and immediately blames himself for it. he learned to Sort Of move on from it over the years tho and managed to become a train conductor and learn how to like. make his own little robot friend oh my god wow!!!!!!!!!!!

32. Miracle

suffered through abuse by her mother for years on end and when she finally gets out from that situation the damage is already done. eventually gains magical girl powers and is tasked to guard the miracle forest in phi central.

33. Ether Strike

lived a life filled with happiness and good memories but eventually got bored of it. the memories he made gets stored in glass butterflies that flutter around behind him and then one day they all hover over him and trapped him within them to the point where he nearly lost his mind over how bright it is in the glass butterfly seal lmao. gets rescued by ray afterwards. hasn't realized One Thing about him yet tho.

34. Axium Crisis and Lady

axium took lady to the vicious labyrinth in the lost world area because he has been curious about it for god knows how long. gets in, tries to collect all of the conflict glass butterflies with lady, and then he decided to play the hero and literally destroy the labyrinth to the best of his ability to the point where it goes BOOM POUSH KACHOW onto the ground. axium was safe but then lady saw an anomaly and was traumatized ever since. axium felt bad since lady blamed it all on him and then he just. lost his old self and became more hostile and constantly blaming himself for hurting lady.

35. Aegleseeker

tries to find lost light in the area in memoria he lives in, ends up getting into an entirely different universe that's just pitch black, has a panic attack about it, but then saw overwhelm and she was like "hey i'm here to help you lol" and then they ventured thru the weird mirror dimension together. eventually they found myriad and far away light—memoria's source of light that aegle has been looking for. aegle fights myriad, defeats her, and then they all come back to rhymix where the light is restored in aegle's home area yippeeeeee

36. Crave Wave

nothing much about him for now. meh.

37. Chariot

was alone for some time and felt miserable until destonio and retribution took her in as a member of team destruction lmao. woooo

38. Retribution

had history with destonio but desto didn't felt too much of a connection with him. eventually years later they reunite and destonio offers to take retribution in to become a member of team destruction. retri agrees, and then boom. it's like as if he was a loyal dog and destonio was his owner (good god that's a really awful comparison but it's accurate enough. retri's dickriding is crazy.)

39. Lumine

saw The Horrors Of The World™ just like destonio lol. met destonio, became friends with him, only to kill herself a little while after. she then accidentally gets revived by fate when fate was trying to hijack the project destruction simulation lmao.

40. Ad Astra

NOTHING ABOUT HIM. LITERALLY 97% OF THE GODS DON'T HAVE BACKSTORIES BECAUSE THEY JUST SPAWN INTO EXISTENCE LMAOOOOOO. got married to moonlight tho i guess. horray

41. Moonlight

nothing either. got married to ad astra tho i guess. horray

42. RGB

can't think of anything for her yet lmaoooo.

43. Dynikitos

saw a lake when he was like. middle school aged and then dipped his hands into it out of curiosity. eventually gets jumpscared by a bunch of slimey vines coming out of it and crawling onto his arms and then boom. he gets the ability to control them since then.

44. Amekagura

nothing interesting about her sorry girlie :/

45. Spinel

was friends with galactic but also faced pressure back at home. gets sick of it and then runs away. eventually she joins some organization that promised to make her life better or WHATEVER. galactic then found her, confronted her, fought her, cried onto her, and then spinel decides to leave and come back to galactic :)

46. Clarith and Chase

they both went to school once but then some terrorist attack happened with killed nearly all of their classmates AND their homeroom teacher. are both traumatized ever since.

47. Glory Road

nothing special here.

48. Lightning Screw

didn't got much attention as a kid so he acts high and mighty to feel special and superior to other kids and to make himself feel less lonely. grows up with that attitude and only glory road can really make him stop acting like that for a short period of time lmao.

49. Felis

explores memoria unaware of his origins with his companion who i don't have a name for yet fuck. a few things happened which then led to felis finding out that this companion of his is a replica of HIM. AND THAT HE ISN'T REAL. AND FELIS IS THE REAL ONE. felis then has an existential crisis that has never stopped until now.

50. Arcahv

she lives a normal life, though since she has to finish college in astria (the nation ars' family rules over) she had to go back and forth between astria and memoria (she usually visits memoria for summer/winter breaks anyways). one time she was at memoria for winter break she met tempestissimo, and the two constantly meet each other at random times each day. eventually tempest makes an attempt to fucking murder her but that got backfired once testify and the rest of her Allies™ came in. also did i forget to mention that she knows tessi personally? yeah. that.

51. World Ender

wasn't originally a god, but rather a leader to the devils in hell. eventually has a change of heart and wants to do good instead, so they cut off their wings, horns, and tail and went to amazing mighty for guidance and then WOOSH. they're a god now yippeeeeeee

52. Overdose

high school drop out, does drugs, blah blah blah. eventually struggles financially so she turned to streaming to get income.

53. Yamero

depressed, filled with anxiety and self hatred, blah blah blah. eventually found out about streaming and decided to try it out for herself.

54. Spasmodic

all i'm gonna say is that she had history with lea. ok moving on.

55. Kumo

has literally suffered for most of her life and has had enough of it. went batshit insane and killed her abuser and then ran away with a new identity.

56. Temptation

she was made specifically to compliment with aleph i guess. that's all.

57. Equilibrium

became the cantate family's royal guard at the young age of 19. got underestimated at first but then he managed to prove his worth.

58. Ringed Genesis

he's not an angel nor is he a god......and he's not a bird either. sorry genesis. either way nothing too interesting about this man other than the fact that he knows both tessi and arcahv personally and he first met edel when edel was injured. he's so high and mighty when really....he's just some guy 🥲

59. Amazing Mighty

oh mighty.

isn't actually truly a god. he originally was a human being who just suffered a lot back then and wanted some worth but never got it back then. during pandora's whole outrage on making the world "perfect again" he dies. at the same time pandora gets put in a prison realm similar to felys' prison realm to atone to her....uh. sins, i guess????? anyways because pandora—the literal ruler of rhymix at the time—was just. some prisoner now, amazing mighty then took her place and he was just SO CONFUSED AT FIRST. initially acted like his usual pathetic self from when he was a human around the other gods but then they didn't see him as a worthy leader so he had to put on an act. do you see the furina genshin impact inspiration yet. anyways yeah that's all. mighty's is lengthy for a reason lmao.

60. Satellite, Terabyte, and Opia

lumping them all together because all of their backstories takes place in the same place. i would've put perfect here too but i'm gonna be honest, she has a whole other thing going on with her that's separate from these three so yeah. anyways they were science experiments in a lab since they were little. eventually tera got fed up so she and the other kids set up a plan to run away from the lab. plan becomes success, they run away and live freely in the end. sate and tera keep in touch, but since they weren't That close with opia, they don't know how he's doing now either. okay yeah this is also long but ywah

Thanks for the in-depth explanation on symbiotes, here's the answer to your ask.

Can't say the skeletons are all too thrilled about her, whether she's the host or the symbiote itself. The main thing they're most worried about being the whole brain eating part.

That's not to say that they would hate her though, nor that some of them wouldn't be willing to find her hosts if they're attached to her enough.

The more science minded skeletons (Sans, Red, Aster, G, and Briar) would want to run some experiments and possibly work on finding an alternative non-human host for her, so she isn't taking over someone else's body/mind. But something that would fit all her needs and everything. Papyrus and Blue would be all for this too, but more with the encouragement. Though they, and Edge, Brick, Birch, Stone, and Lunar, could help with building a skeleton/body for her. If this method even works.

Sans, Papyrus, Blue, Stretch, Lilac, Charmed, G, and Aster would all be the most unnerved by her parasitic bond with others, even if she does need it to survive. They'd be the least accepting of it as well, just unable to really separate their morals from the situation. After all, that's a person she's hurting, that's someone else's body she's using and someone else's mind she's manipulating. Child or not, whether she needs it to survive or not, that's not right. And this carries over whether Mc intends to hurt her host or not, or even if she tries to be as good as possible.

The only thing that calms them a little is if she has a willing host, but that's just barely since it's still a parasitic bond.

Red, Edge, Black, Mutt, Brick, Birch, Pitch, Wolf, and Briar would be most interested in the abilities she has though, and the abilities that gives the host. With a steady food supply and their strength back up, Birch and Briar would have no problems becoming her host just to test it out. Both have strong wills themselves, and figure or theorize that may help some of the side effects of the bond. Whether it does or not is really irrelevant here and no one's really happy with the set up, especially Brick and Sunny. Since they don't like their brothers using themselves as guinea pigs. But they are able to find out more about Symbiote Mc that way, both her abilities and makeup.

They're also quite surprised that she can absorb and adapt to use their magic. They're also very disturbed by this fact and wonder exactly how she did it, if she just copied the magic or actually stole it directly from them.

The Horrors all together aren't that unnerved by her honestly, and the most accepting. They really understand the whole "you gotta do what you gotta do to survive" thing. And they can't really blame her for choosing her life over that of a stranger's, they'd be a hypocrite if they did since they have made the same exact choice. Red, Edge, Black, and Mutt get this on some degree too, but they're still disturbed by it and slightly repulsed. So the Horrors would be the most accepting of her, even if some are slightly up off for their own reasons (Stone, Silence, Grey, Lunar, Poppy, Rose, Pass, and Button).

But if the Horrors are attached to Mc enough, they won't have any problems finding her more hosts. The Fell Horrors and Horrormob brothers especially.

I'll admit I know about Venom and symbiotes from Spiderman, but I don't know how they work. Please send another ask explaining the concept more and then I can answer better.

Titans 3.04

just under the wire! ... i hope.

like with the previous review, i’m typing this up as i see the episode. here we go!

spoilers ahead.

1. ... well. that was an interesting cold open.

1.25. i don’t know whether to admire this show’s restraint when it comes to gotham and its excesses, particularly arkham asylum. it’d be easy to go hammer and tongs, like suicide squad (2016) did, or any number of bat media did, at a tropey, colourful~~insanity~~ that can be quite damaging, casting mental illness in strangeness and criminality. it definitely shows gotham as... separate from the rest of the country, its own ecosystem of heroes and villains, a sort of rogue state.

but that ecosystem is still human, with its heroes needing to clip parts of themselves away just to survive, growing old and needing to be recycled, its villains languishing in the same kinds of systems that fail everybody else who needs to be helped. it’s a quieter, tenser sort of wrongness: not strange enough that you can dissociate, but not close enough that you can completely empathise. gotham is its own creature.

1.5. i know that the reasoning behind this is more doylist than anything, but i’m so glad that joker was killed off with little fanfare right at the start of the season. he is the one man in the batverse that’s transcended its confines as this sort of ethereal boogeyman/eternal edgelord and to justify his presence in the series would mean giving him this tired, overblown importance and too much of a stab at colourful, tropey “madness” in this otherwise-subdued series. i wish all batmedia would follow suit and get rid of this fucker.

1.75. so jason is bucking scarecrow’s control! or reminding him of who exactly holds all the cards right now. circling back to what i talked about in the last review, it’s remarkable just how little time it’s been since jason’s “death” and he’s already got ‘minions’ and elaborately set up plans to track, break and kill the titans. just how long has he been planning this? when did he first look at WE weapons prototypes and think that’s something i can use to blow somebody up? and the most unsettling question: did he plan his own death at the hands of the joker just so that he could break batman?

at this point it’s obvious that the scarecrow at least started jason down this path, but it’s frightening just how far he’s travelled already.

1.8. aaagh, less than one minute in! i’ll shut up.

2. conner washing his hands at the sink reminds me that he was directly in the line of explosion when hank got blown up and he’s probably got atomised hank-bits all over his skin that he’s desperately trying to wash off.

... you’re welcome.

2.25. conner, don’t you speak to gar fucking logan like that, sir, no!

2.3. if anything it’s the lex part of him that gave him the knowhow to recognise the weapon and build a de-activator for it.

anyway, for that ‘half-breed’ and ‘talking tiger’ comment?

(i wish, tho, that we actually see conner more interested in the superman part of his legacy, like maybe listening to stories from gar, or even better, dick, so we get a better idea of the pressure he’s feeling to live up to that part of him and not the part that’s lex.)

((i talked about conner’s stages of moral development in his introductory episode last season, but i wonder if the next stage of his self-actualisation would be to further integrate the parts of himself and realise that they are only parts and he, conner, is an entirely different person unto himself that can make decisions on how to use what he has and what he knows. his superman abilities can be used to destroy. his lex knowledge can be used to save.))

3. oh dawn :((

3.25. is this the last we see of dawn and hank? i mean, we know donna is coming back; would it be a stretch to think they’ll try to have a go at resurrecting hank as well?

3.5. “deathstroke didn’t make us into killers.” good, because deathstroke didn’t make jason a killer either. there’s a missing step there you need to be looking for, dick.

3.75. dick did try to break the cycle, step away from gotham, run from the possibility that he could turn into batman. it didn’t help; he couldn’t fully withdraw from his vigilante persona the same time he loathed it, and batman literally haunted him both asleep and awake. but maybe gotham doesn’t have to turn anybody into anything. maybe gotham has nothing to do with it at all. it’s about taking responsibility, realising some sacrifices are pure bullshit, and building an actual family instead of merely a team.

anyway: hugs!

(oh, also? mr “i hate flying”? i mean, there’s perfectly valid reasons to hate flying that’s not related to childhood trauma, but then again, this guy was literally a ‘flying grayson’ once. also also, remember that he also gets sea-sick. must’ve a lot of fun stories to tell.)

4. ooh that gar/kory confrontation was brief but cool!

listen, i have never seen a psychiatrist with that extravagant an office and SIR I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW--

4.5. kory’s so unused to reaching out for help and it’s breaking my heart that HPG likely is some kind of impostor that’s maybe causing her symptoms in the first place.

kory and dick have mostly been apart this season but it’s remarkable how their journeys have paralleled each other; kory processes her grief, isolation and existential dread into a determination to take care of this new family she has, no matter what it takes; dick does much the same, forging ahead with plans and solutions until he has no fuel left in him and spirals into a massive breakdown.

4.25. listen titans this really is a TERRIBLE continuity error. we aren’t goldfish; we can clearly remember that two minutes ago it was gar’s upper arm that was burned, not his forearm. COME ON.

“sensory deprivation tank” *SNORT*

anyway, gar is the BEST

4.5. i wonder where these visions of experimentation took place. was it on tamaran, or on earth, after she came to hunt down rachel/trigon and before she lost all her memories? is HPG a part of the scientist group that experimented on her? ... god, i hope not. i mean, i think he is, but it would be cool to have some positive therapist representation in media.

5. you’d think the van transporting a dangerous supervillain that only batman could catch would be more secure but... i’m also not entirely surprised.

5.15. i love dick gives ZERO shits about hiding himself or even ensuring scarecrow is adequately contained. just turns away after kidnapping him in BROAD DAYLIGHT and says ‘let’s go’. I LOVE THIS DUMBASS

6. lmao gar is having a really really shitty day SOMEONE GIVE THIS MAN A BREAK or just a goddamn story arc of his own

6.5. i’m really confused about the timeline here. so... sometime ago, kory came down to earth to hunt down trigon, yeah? at some further point down the line she and her sister were kidnapped and experimented on. THEN she somehow escapes but... loses her memory? a few months pass and then we see blackfire alive and well and free; she kills faddei, can impersonate other people, and is clearly seeking out kory. but now she’s still in the experiment facility...? what’s going on?

i’m not entirely surprised about the facility being mostly deserted. either the biggest investors in this project gave up on it and it was left to the most fanatic to carry on, or they were deliberately trying to lure kory and get her to free blackfire--expand the environs of the experiment, so to speak.

7. hopefully barbara is going to get something to do other than listen to various men give her Attitude

8. how do you terrorise a terrorist? well:

i love when dick is a scary-competent motherfucker.

8.25. ooooh, the attack on crane at arkham a ploy to get crane to blackgate? nice one dick, i didn’t even think of that. but why though? to protect crane from the titans? to intercept the van to blackgate and “rescue” him? seems likely--red hood was there, except dick got to crane quicker.

9. still reeeallly unclear about the komand’r situation. was komand’r captured after s2? is this all A TRAP?? if so, why are you stepping into the only thing that can contain you, kory????

9.25. so... definite parallels between dick/jason and kory/kom here. i’m just. i’m still. really confused. i’ll shut up now.

10. this may be my favourite dick look yet:

woodsman!dick in a beanie.

10.5. i unironically love how titans has made this bizarrely-devoted-to-his-moniker, toxin-spewing supervillain into a tamer version of hannibal, psychoanalysing his victims into submission. it’s of a piece with how inward looking titans is, the way all of its villains are obsessed with how our protagonists’ minds work, to the point where they would actually spend time inside of them.

there are no big plots to end the world. no apocalypses or endgames here. these villains collect the titans’ insecurities like infinity stones. the way the titans defeat them is by achieving character growth--literally winning by the power of love. literally “the real superpower is the friends we made along the way”!

10.7. anyway, i’m betting dick is used to this bullshit from crane and is humouring him in the service of getting more information. the story about the wolf? an implicit threat, not to mention dick getting to control what crane knows about him and what methods he would use to manipulate him.

am i giving dick too much credit here? i don’t think so. he’s really impressed me so far this season.

10.75. like. there’s a real unreliable narrator vibe coming off with every person that talks about bruce (much like how the various members of the titans talked about jason’s motivations) and to buy into crane’s talk about bruce being a psychopath is to fall for the same manipulation that jason fell for. dick is the only person who hasn’t really psychoanalysed bruce this season, and i think some part of his detective brain is piecing things together into a bigger picture.

11. i’m glad kory rescued kom but did she have to kill the scientist?

(i mean, yeah, probably - the less people know that kom escaped the less likely they’re going to have the fucking govt on their doorstep, but still.)

Growing Up is Hard; It’s Hard and Nobody Understands

So I noticed netflix has Neon Genesis Evangelion up last week and started watching it front to back for the first time ever(this happens to have coincided with me being in a down-mood for your edification, dear readers u_u), finished it today, REALLY liked it, and I wanted to try my hand at explaining what the hell is even going on in NGE cuz it actl seemed super-clear to me(a person who has been consuming NGE analysis and post-NGE media for literally 25 years) u_u

Surface Plot; Or NERV: What the Hell Is It?

I’ll try to make this as brief as possible: An organization of super-wealthy individuals calling itself Seele(looking this up, it means soul in german) wants to possess the power of God. The final third or so of the series is clear on this; it’s all about power. Ikari Yui, a geneticist, is recruited by this organization, and her husband Gendo(having taken her name which says a LOT given typical Japanese practice) comes with her. In seeking out this power, they discover a hollow sphere underneath Antarctica(”The White Moon”), send an expedition there under the guise of the UN, encounter an entity with this power which they label an “Angel”, and do SOMETHING which prompts it to explode the continent flooding the earth and killing half the population(that Gendo left beforehand implies this may have been intentional, or that a bad outcome to Seele’s approach was easy to predict, tho in typical Gendo fashion, his is the only ass he cared to save).

Afterwards Seele blame the scientists for this outcome and send Gendo on a salvage mission which recovers both remains of the Angel, now dubbed “Adam”, and a device they dub “the spear of Longinus”. Seele creates Gehirn to study these remains for practical use; they clone “Adam” and dub the result Evas(Eves). Having cloned them, they now need a way to use and control them as the Evas are non-responsive. They hit on the idea of injecting people into them via the Entry Plug system, presumably to act as a brain. The first person to try this, Ikari Yui, was absorbed by the Eva(Unit 01); the second(Soryu Kyoko Zeppelin; Asuka’s mother) was partially psychologically absorbed by Unit 02, psychologically and mentally injured by this, institutionalized, abandoned by her shit USian husband Langley who remarried to her LEAD DOCTOR, and eventual kills herself in a hanging which Asuka either is the first to discover or, given her memories of promising to die with her/begging her not to do it, was present for. An important thing to note about this: Shinji and Asuka’s ability to sync with their Evas comes from the fact that their mothers are PART of their Eva’s identity, and all of their classmates are potential pilot-candidates. The implication here is that Seele KNEW this happened when you put adults into an Angel, and they KEPT DOING IT ANYWAY to create more pilots, but there’s no confirmation of that in series.

After the attempt at human adult control fails, Gendo combines Yui’s DNA with Adam’s and creates Rei. At the same time he is doing this another team, under Akagi Naoko, is developing Magi, a biomechanical computer for simulating the human mind(again: certain implication to this re: Evas though the series never says anything). Naoko is romantically interested in Gendo, and they start getting together(Gendo’s too much of an asshole to be said to date, I think). After Rei, a toddler, tells her Gendo calls her an “old woman” in private, not realizing this is insulting, Naoko kills her, then kills herself out of shame over having MURDERED A CHILD, and Gehirn is folded into a new organization, NERV, which Gendo is put in charge of. Rei forms the basis of the second attempt at controlling the Evas; child-pilots.

How they use Rei for this I’m not exactly sure. It could be because Rei is cloned from Yui(she easily syncs with Unit 01 before Shinji bonds with it completely), or because she’s part Angel via her Adam element(Kaworu says Angels merge with one another easily and naturally), or it could be they did something with Rei I’s corpse and Unit 00(I dont see how as it seems to require a LIVE pilot). Regardless, she is raised to be the pilot for 00, the prototype. MUCH later, when the rest of the Angels finally decide to come looking for Adam, Shinji is called in, and after his success Asuka(who like Rei and unlike Shinji has been training to pilot her whole life) is called to Nerv headquarters(under Japan, in the “Black Moon”; a second spherical hollow where they found another Angel they call Lilith) too.

Regardless the child-pilots are only a step in Nerv and Seele’s plans, as Rei is ALSO the template for the Dummy Plug system, the final step in complete control of Eva units. To put it simply, the Dummy Plugs are Rei-clones without her personality or memories, and will just do whatever the heck they’re ordered to. At least once during the series(and I’d argue two, possibly three times) Rei dies and is replaced by one of these clones through some process, which involves what looks like a pre 00 Eva’s spine and probably a Magi-like backup, which transfers her personality and memories into the new body.

So what is Nerv? Well it’s hard to say EXACTLY because Gendo is in some sort of conflict with Seele(and I want to keep my watches of End of Evangelion out of this post; to focus entirely on JUST NGE itself) and Nerv IS Gendo, but as the series states repeatedly it’s an attempt to control the future of humanity by controlling what they call “the power of god” which, given that it’s what most distinguishes the “Angels”, is the AT, or “Absolute Terror”, Field. What is the AT Field? It’s a field that can make or unmake any kind of matter or energy from basically nothing, and it also seems to have a strong tie to what you could call the Ego; to desires and sense-of-self. An AT Field gets stronger when the person generating it is experiencing powerful emotions; Confidence, sure, but also Fear, Abandonment, the Will to Live, and Anger.

That last bit is very important. Why? Strong AT Field effects require a powerful emotional motivation in the pilot combined with high sync-rates with the Eva(basically a lobotomized Angel-clone) generating the Field. The three pilots we meet, the Strongest candidates, are all exceedingly traumatized people, and Gendo is the direct cause of the trauma of two of them. At no point in the series is Gendo ever a good father to Shinji, he is CONSTANTLY unreasonable, neglectful, and cruel to him; he’s kinder to Rei but at the same time her loneliness, the state of her “home”, and her lack of self worth shows that he rarely interacts with her outside of missions or explains what’s going on beyond bald facts; and he COMPLETELY ignores Asuka, a deeply lonely child with a history of abandonment and close brushes with death; he even delegates bumping her from the program. This point is important because it’s important to recognize that Gendo is a bad dad on PURPOSE; that he instrumentalizes his bad dadness to traumatize Shinji(and Rei and Asuka, though sadly the series doesn’t focus on them enough for us to see much) as much as he can, because he thinks that trauma, that emotional instability and anger, MAKES SHINJI A MORE USEFUL PILOT; ie lets him generate more powerful AT Fields. This is never said clearly, but it’s clearly what’s going on as forcing Unit 01(and thus Shinji) into awful, heartbreaking, life-threatening situations is vital to his plan. Gendo’s a piece of shit, and I want ppl to recognize just HOW BIG a piece of shit he is, because I feel this powerfully.

And for what? For Power. To be “God”. To get the highest numbers. To generate the MOST Invincible Invincibility Shield. For Ridiculous, Absurd, Childish reasons. For, you know, the same reasons rich and powerful people do all the fucked up shit they do in the real world where giant magic robots thankfully DONT exist.

And how do they plan to do this? Through “Human Instrumentation”, which will literally kill everyone by turning them all into goo.

Metaplot; Or “SHINJI! Don’t Get in that Robot!!”

So, maybe this is just because(as said previously) I’ve been reading NGE Analysis and consuming media which NGE heavily inspired for ~25 years, but I think it’s old hat at this point to note that Neon Genesis Evangelion is ALSO an allegory for becoming an adult, centered on Shinji. However, it’s just really SO on the nose in this, so PERFECT as such a narrative, that I want to run through it real quick. Also: A Cruel Angel’s Thesis is basically a thesis-statement for this series; please check out the lyrics.

So Shinji is living under the guardianship of a teacher(yup: this series even takes a swing at how our society uses schools to warehouse kids so their parents can waste their lives producing “Value” instead of raising them), when the shitty dad that abandoned him decides he has a use for him after all and calls him up.

On meeting with a child he has not seen SINCE HE WAS A TODDLER LITERALLY ABANDONED HIM ON THE STREET WHEN HIS MOTHER DIED he immediately ambushes him with the command that he get in a huge body(that he grow up) to do what? Whatever Gendo tells him to, but specifically: commit acts of violence for Gendo and Seele’s profit. He tells him this will protect people; meanwhile doing it destroys those peoples’ literal homes. The rest of the series is a series of monotonous, incomprehensible “Tests” judging his, and his peers, worthiness for approval and affection on the basis of how well they can use those giant bodies to do what Gendo tells them(so: capitalist work), punctuated by unpredictable, brutal, traumatizing, and physically dangerous events(so: capitalist work). Every friend, and the one lover, he meets, he is placed in unnecessary, destructive competition with and, when they are male, forced to attack and(in the case of the one lover, Kaworu) kill them; this last comment on homophobia is so stark and obvs I don’t even feel like you can CALL it subtext, even IF it plays out over mostly a single episode(honestly this plotline should have been given more time). And all the time they’re doing this, they must ALSO continue going to school and maintaining the front that they’re happy smiley Heroes, completely normal and not traumatized at all, and Nerv and the government that lets them run this city is a great and wonderful organization. Is this not what becoming an adult, over your teens and 20s, feels like?

And then there’s Seele and Nerv. Able to move state governments as they wish, Seele CAUSED Second Impact(Global Warming). By not returning Adam’s remains, they’re CAUSING the Angel attacks on Nerv meant to retrieve them(the threat of Human extinction). The Angels eventually begin trying to communicate and Nerv’s response? Destroy them before they can; blow up the Evas(and their pilots) if they succeed. And to top it all off Seele and Nerv are actually trying to CAUSE the very extinction(Third Impact) they claim to be preventing! Seele and Nerv are just SUCH good metaphors for capitalism in our modern day.

The transwoman reading of Shinji also seems pretty dang strong to me, though I’ll only deal with it shallowly. Shinji is the only “male” of all the pilots. Outside of command and security, most Nerv staff are women. Being an Eva pilot, being Nerv staff, is marked as “feminine”, and Shinji is an Eva pilot; is a Nerv staffer. The body he gets into, Unit 01, acts as a metaphor for the large, imposing, masculine body he’s expected to have as an adult “man”, yet it’s also spiritually his mom -feminine- and his ability to use it is tied DIRECTLY with his ability to “Sync” with that spirit; with his ease and comfort being feminine. Even at the level of mere aesthetics, Shinji’s plugsuit makes him appear to have breasts! Going a bit deeper, he initially relates to the women around him by relating to their gender. He’s most at ease with Rei because of the personality traits she shares with him which, we know from his gender-policing of Misato from earlier in the series, are traits he considers feminine(ie: he doesn’t feel like Misato has them, so he thinks she’s being a woman “wrong” and gets oddly offended by this in a way that really feels more about him than her). Asuka is constantly expressing her frustration with him for not “being a man”, ie, for being “feminine” in her eyes, and he isn’t really bothered by it(her calling him an idiot seems to stick much more firmly). Misato and Shinji establish a modus vevendi when she accepts him as he is, allowing him to do the household chores and to cook; he’s comfortable and happy when accepted into roles his culture considers feminine, while most of the series is him bucking AGAINST the masculinity forced on him by Nerv, his father, and others. Again: this is a very surface-level engagement with the subject, but even at that shallow level I feel like the case for reading Shinji as a transwoman is pretty solid.

Dislikes

It’s not a perfect series by any means of course.

There’s allot of dialogue that’s pure 90s nonsense, though the series mostly includes it only to shoot it down.

Like I said above, I don’t think Rei and Asuka really get the time or attention they deserve. In general the series treatment of women is ...Weird... especially around the issue of sex. It’s really strange; in many ways it’s far better than most anime(spcl from that period) on this. Women are ACTUAL PEOPLE with psychology, opinions, and pasts; they’re allowed to have emotions of their own, and struggles, and to be damn competent; they are independent and their own selves rather than accessories or “prizes” to men. But on the issue of feminine sexuality it just gets suddenly so weird in this very particular old-school misogynist way. Like: it treats women’s attraction and reactions TO relationships as something devoid of and impenetrable to reason, without belittling the emotions(the desire and hurt) behind those reactions. That’s the only way I can describe it, and it’s so strange to see something that is both so insulting and sympathetic at once. Oh, and the Akagis in particular are done super-dirty for seemingly no reason I can see, tho I can guess, and Akagi Ritsuki is CLEARLY a lesbian(possibly bi lesbian) and also Rose Lalonde(srsl; her Deal should have been an unrequited, unspoken crush on Misato. They openly dealt with queerness re: Kaworu and Shinji they could have done it here too).

The Kaworu storyline should have been a series of episodes or even developed from the start with him as another pilot(maybe replace Toji with him), though they’d have to tone down his weirdness, at least at the start. A deeper dive on Shinji’s sexuality(honestly his attraction to Kaworu is SO much more immediate and believable than anything we see with him and Asuka, which there is basically nothing of beyond the ep where they had to do choreography for a fight, and that’s not developed on) would have really been appreciated, and having Kaworu be a bigger part of the series would have facilitated that.

Also honestly the whole series feels a bit rushed? Spcl the second half. Like I said: I haven’t done any followup reading lately, but I remember there being some budget problems or something, so maybe that’s the cause. Ironically it might actl also be why it’s as GOOD as it is; having to keep it short forces you to write concise and lean, and that’s probably why its themes and message are so clear. But, I’d have liked more rambling for character development, and more time spent on seeing Rei and Asuka react to the stresses we saw Shinji face(also they never really get moments to shine like he does; another negative common to the medium and genre). Asuka in particular, as a Japanese German with a USian temperament abandoned by her parents, already an outsider in SO many ways, coming to live in an entirely different culture where she’s even MORE of an outsider; forced to live with people(Misato and Shinji) she finds it impossible to relate to or connect with; who has literally NO ONE beside a single adult guardian who totally blows her off THE WHOLE SERIES after delivering her; PLUS her awful past: there’s just SO MUCH material I’d have loved to see explored more slowly and with greater depth, detail, and sympathy even if what IS there already is pretty powerful and effecting. She’s SUCH a good Vriska(so I’d also have loved to see her break more shit too >:>)

Conclusion

So Anyway: I really liked this series. It had its problems, there are things I’d have liked to see, but it absolutely deserves the reputation it has. I might write more about this, I might do a watch through INCLUDING End of Evangelion(which actl makes much more sense having watched the series, though having done so makes Shinji’s masturbation scene comPLETELY out of left-field like where the hell did THAT come from); we’ll see.

today in the Andromeda Galaxy, GLITCHES TRIED TO KILL ME BUT I MADE IT WORK. or, well. Helen made it work, actually, and I was very grateful. (Elaaden, what do you have against my triangle button working? and wtf was that Nomad bug where suddenly I could see through time and the world contracted and my hair turned white????)

anyway.

this morning I joked to Helen that I was feeling very “I love all of my crew equally”/“I don’t care for Cora” so today I made a concerted effort to get to know her better--and tried a few Nomad combos where she wouldn’t sound like the fun police. (turns out, she and Vetra get along great! and also when I put her with Peebee she gets very self-conscious about how she’s totes not appropriating asari culture and it’s v embarrassing. on the OTHER hand, she makes fun of Peebee for peeping on Jaal and like, again, wtf, let me have my ot3.)

I started out finishing up that Morda drive core mission that glitched, and of course I gave the krogan the drive core in exchange for the outpost because I LOVE KROGAN and also RYDER LOVES OUTPOSTS. win/win tbh. but honestly the best part was getting to pick the dialogue option talking to Addison “fuck Tann” and Ryder actually getting to say fuck! it’s the little things.

after closing out Elaaden I decided to try and finish up a few errand-y missions like scanning plants, etc. in doing so, I got to play soccer with my very best friend Liam which was a heartwarming lot of fun, and fought TWO architects because just one was not enough. Peebee’s ex stole our beloved Proof Of Concept (I know the bot is called Poc, but honestly I think full-naming it is much cuter) and I was all “of course I’m gonna help you we’re in this together” which threw Peebee off her game because she’s still thrown every time someone cares about her. I AM, AGAIN, CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH, GENUINELY SAD I’M GOING TO HAVE TO CHOOSE AMONG ROMANCE OPTIONS. this experience could not be more different from the main trilogy, where I romanced Liara out of a sense of obligation/curiosity faaaaaar more than any genuine interest or investment, and wasn’t tempted* to deviate from that by anyone else along the way. there are a thousand mechanical reasons why I think romance works much, much better in Andromeda than it ever did in the main series--among them the very pointed focus on found family throughout, the more nuanced ability to craft a unique Ryder by doing away with paragon/renegade and instead having the more robust conversation trees, and the overworld chatting on the Nomad giving EVERYONE the amount of personality off the bat that my OG crew had to like bite and claw for for two and a half games-- but like. I’m not gonna lie a big part of it is just that I just think more of these people are more interesting as potential partners. I THINK I AM AN ANDROMEDA GIRL.

* well that’s a lie I would have romanced Tali in a heartbeat if I weren’t playing fem!Shep and that was illegal. and I’ll probably romance Sam Traynor after that. so. it’s not a total bust.

but I digress.

saved that scientist’s baby on Voeld, and afterwards had my first ACTUAL, HUMAN conversation with Addison about--shockingly--the nature of friendship. I was genuinely surprised and pleased! look at us go! I also did some spying for that STG agent, and got the world’s most badly delivered “gee, are you really going to believe that old coot?” speech out of my main suspect, which was hilariously insulting.

and then, partly due to Helen’s advice and partly because, again, today was Learn To Appreciate Cora Day, I finished out her loyalty mission! I was shocked to find Sarissa alive after all the build-up-- I was certain that after that long a drum roll for how key she’d be in the Initiative’s growth that we’d find her mega-dead-- but as Helen pointed out to me, the trope is Don’t Meet Your Heroes, not Your Hero Is Probably Dead, Actually. her whole “be calm, soldier” routine @ Vedaria was kind of grating in the moment but is very cute after the fact, so fine. the whole muted sounds and gravity tricks of that final fight were super fun, even though I did accidentally jump into space once or twice. the big biotics lightshow was v impressive, but after I took a pretty hardline stance on Sarissa: come clean and shut up, and you’re fired. I did get a little offended when the asari captain was like “you could have killed us all, it was only dumb luck that Ryder found us” bc EXCUSE ME, SOME OF IT WAS DUMB SKILL, but still. it was good to get that all settled, and very good to hear Cora say what was immediately obvious to everyone but her, which is that her compulsion towards mentors and plans would have made her a poor Pathfinder but makes her a perfect XO.

then I hit level 50 and spent a lot of time upgrading my gear, and like-- a kind god would have put the loadout console next to R&D and the buy/sell screen so I wouldn’t have to run up and down the Tempest corridor like an idiot. but whatever. Baby’s Fourth Beam Gun TM (an Avenger with a beam emitter) is working out splendidly, I’m slicing and dicing with my asari sword, and I’ve just put seeking plasma bolts on my Eagle which delights me. still shopping around for my ideal sniper before I commit but we’re getting there!

then I went to start the new planet, but then realized Ark Natanus was right there, and ended up backtracking twice. First I ran back to the Nexus thinking there’d be another fun homecoming cut scene for the asari like there’d been for the salarians that I didn’t want to muddy with adding turians, too, only that didn’t happen. boo! I did remember to check on my mom, tho, so that was nice and emotional. then I went back to Netanus to start that up, only to realize I was wearing a very ugly and entirely face-obscuring helmet-- and once it was clear the entirety of the mission was going to be me emoting at Rix, I restarted the mission with a different armor loudout. yes, I am that vain, but only because opportunities for mlm/wlw solidarity are rare in this game (Gil’s been quiet lately, lol) and Rix deserved my best. though after doing all this, I am wondering: why do all the SAMs have different voices? surely making even one AI as smart and unique as SAM is difficult; then making each Ark’s SAM unique feels like an unnecessary burden? but whatever.

H-whateverthefuck is by far my favorite planet to Nomad around on. I’ve been complaining about the lack of low gravity mechanics since the Mako in ME1 (WE WENT TO THE MOON, THE LITERAL MOON, OUR MOON, AND NOT EVEN THAT HAD LOW GRAVITY?) and so this felt like pure vindication. (also, in general but very aggressively NOT for this planet because of the radiation, shout out to the Nomad for letting me get out no matter how poorly or vertically it’s parked, because lord knows I glitched the Mako many times trying to pause and get out in ‘impossible’ places the Nomad handles with ease.) anyway. the concept of a broken-up planet is terrifying, and the reality of it was eerie as all get-out. what neat execution!

and speaking of a neat execution, I’m so relieved going with the interrupt and firing at Meriwether while she held Sid worked, because I was again legit scared I might get Sid killed. as you’ll recall re: my Jaal loyalty mission, that’s the second time I was genuinely quite nervous there would be real consequences to screwing this up! I give the game a lot of credit for building a world where it feels like I really could screw up that badly. I’m very proud/fond of Sid, and the whole security camera mechanic was delightful-- a more fun version of the kind of stuff KOTOR always made me do. back on the Tempest, I decided to flirt with Vetra while the flirting’s still good, but tbh her flirt option (“I care about Sid bc I care about you”) wasn’t even all that romantically valanced, if you ask me! but also I love that Sid’s idea of justice is fast-tracking having cats in Heleus.

phew! with so many big things now out of the way, I’m not sure how much dithering I can/should do before continuing with the main mission. but that’s a decision for future me.

Also since Nat is especially chemically castrated won't it affect her effectiveness as a seductress and assassin? (No pressure to answer, I love everything you write tho)

It doesn’t actually change Steve’s Alphaness at all. I made so many mistakes by making all my central characters deviate from the norm of the system I established, but uh, yeah, Steve is another illustration about how regulated “Assignment” and Lineage testing is garbage. As a kid, having so many respiratory illnesses seriously damaged Steve’s ability to smell and stunted his growth. Because of that, he isn’t particularly responsive to the signals of other people / has trouble connecting with them as a kid and isn’t as capable of engaging in Alpha-typical behaviours, leading him to be classified as a Weak Alpha. His impact factor, re: ability to influence others (particularly with fight-y feelings), is really REALLY strong (re: Bucky calling him a little Alpha with a big voice) and should’ve made it clear that he’s a Strong Alpha, but pack-mentality in the States lead most of their testing to be directed by an individual’s responses to others. It’s only obvious that he’s having difficulties when you spend a lot of time with him, as the Howlies will pick up on later when he changes their entire dynamic. The scientists who developed the serum advertise him as having increased in Lineage Strength when nothing of the sort has happened, because that’s what they believe. There’s a reason he was Bucky’s Prime from the very beginning.

As for Nat, the chemical reassignment (or unassignment) of the Red Room girls makes them appear as Betas at first glance. They move like Betas, read the room like Betas, and don’t spend a lot of time with their targets - the Red Room gets you over time, making you THINK you’ve spent time with the girls when every conversation has been fleeting, they’re always just out of reach, and they never EVER scent you. It takes awhile for their blankness to become eerie, even up close, since they were essentially halted pheromonally at puberty. They’re almost like children in that they give off weak signals that aren’t very distinct - most of the other characters would describe them as “clean” or, in more sinister cases, “scrubbed”. Really Strong Lineages might pick up on the weirdness in them immediately, but it’ll read to them instinctually as “child” first before it becomes creepy, which can be worked to the Red Room’s advantage. This post got long, and got away from me, so I’ll tl;dr it

1. dark magic is a metaphor for consumption and materialism and is ultimately bad because it harms others unnecessarily and is not a sustainable resource

2. the elves were dicks for banishing humans but (especially if humans sucked all the magic out of the land themselves) they were kind of justified, even if it was an extreme measure

3. Eating meat is not the same as dark magic if you’re looking at things from an animistic point of view, which the elves likely do

4. it’s okay to like problematic characters and you don’t have to portray Ezran as a monstrous enfant terrible to feel okay about thinking Viren is justified in what he does. In fact, pretty please stop doing this, everyone in all fandoms. It’s fine if you don’t like the protags but that doesn’t mean you get to say Ezran or Rayla or whoever is EVIL. It’s called Ron the Death Eater and it’s a fandom trope that has pissed me off for going on fifteen years. Deliberately misreading the text isn’t cute. Stop doing it.

5. The show isn’t over, be patient, you’ll probably get to see some comeuppance for stuff anyway. And if you don’t, there’s always fanfiction.

Ugh I don’t want to start a big ol’ argument with people because I’m still on vacation and don’t want to spend the rest of today arguing about cartoons on the internet, but this has been on the kettle for a while and I feel QUITE STRONGLY about some of these things, so just... let me express my views here and don’t come for me because I’m about to talk about religion and sociology.

Dark Magic is a metaphor for unchecked consumption and capitalism. 1. The theory i’m seeing floating around that got my dander up is that the elves and dragons drained the western half of the continent of magic to keep magic away from humans. I think that, based on what we’ve learned from canon, this is highly unlikely and would be weaker writing than what I think actually happened. Instead, Dark magic was going on for a good solid 800 years (Rise of Elarion is 2000 years before canon) before Sol Regem faced off with Viard (1200 years before canon). The division of Xadia was another 200 years after that. Humans had a solid honking millennium of unchecked dark magic. It is quite likely that the reason the west is entirely devoid of magic, and that humans were banished there, is because they sucked all the magic out of that half themselves. Poor innocent baby humans nothing. They got a taste of power and progress and, like real world humans, let that get WAY out of control.

2. “But Lujanne eats bugs, she’s a hypocrite for saying Claudia can’t squish bugs for pancakes” I want you to go down to your local new-age/witchy bookstore and find yourself an animist that eats meat. You are going to get glared at SO HARD if you whip out the “you think animals have souls but you eat meat!” chestnut. Because here’s the thing.

Eating meat/animal products is an act of life, necessary to sustain the life of someone else. We don’t vilify wolves for eating deer. You gotta eat to live your life, and the human (or, we can assume, bipedal humanoid) diet includes a need for complex protein chains, quite often found in animal meat.

But the reason that we find cannibalism repulsive in western society is because it’s eating another human, despite the fact that humans are made of meat. It’s eating something that we consider sentient, dignified and possessed of a soul. Of course, the taboo also derives from the fact that you can contract prion disease from consuming human meat, but people in 11th century Normandy didn’t know that. It is quite likely, especially given what we’ve seen of magical creatures and Ezran’s ability to talk to animals, that elves view non-human/elf creatures as sentient and possessed of a soul. If that’s the case, then OF COURSE they would see dark magic as horrific.

But eating meat is not on the same level because, as we see from the assassins, death is a part of life, and sometimes necessary. I imagine that hunting and taking a creature’s life for food is an act that is done with respect. The creatures are honored or thanked before they’re eaten or turned into leather. Highly ritualized to dignify that creature’s life. Dark magic doesn’t do that. Dark magic sucks the whole life out, without so much of a how do you do. It’s treating a person like a thing. It’s sucking all the life and essence out of someone so you can shoot fireballs or make fluffy pancakes. Lets be real - you don’t need to do either of those things, so the creature thus died in vain. 3. “The elves are selfish bastards for hogging all the magic.” I agree. Granted, their attitudes may have cooled in the ensuing centuries. It’s a new dawn, the era of Zubeia. We might see elves getting over their uppity selves and working to help teach humans magic. We might also see the show explore that kind of prejudice as Callum learns more magic. In fact, I hope we do. However, two wrongs dont make a right. If Japan bombs the absolute fuckshit out of Hawaii, that does not make it okay to flash-fry Nagasaki with a weapon that blights the land and its people for years and years afterward.

To the elves (who are magical creatures and therefore totally usable as spell components), that’s what dark magic is. Suddenly, haha oh fuck, the humans have a fucking NUKE that every elf and dragon in Xadia is vulnerable to. If a weapon was devised that ONLY a certain portion of the population was affected by, you better bet your sweet bippy that people would panic and make it forbidden and illegal, and severely punish the people who created it. ESPECIALLY if those people were already marginalized. Sucks, don’t it? Doesn’t mean the writing is bad for portraying people having a realistic reaction to something that is harmful to them. The elves aren’t justified in hogging the magic, and I hope future chapters will explore that. But the elves ARE a liiiiiittle bit justified in freaking out. I hold they could’ve come up with a better solution than BANISH HUMANS, but they didn’t. Makes for interesting story conflict, doesn’t it? 4. “Humans NEED dark magic!” / “Calling dark magic a shortcut is dumb” Did they tho? Did they really? Really really? We, modern day humans, don’t NEED smart phones (which rely on several rare earth minerals and are causing untold ecological disaster in areas where they’re miend). We, modern day humans, don’t NEED coal power (which is controlled by coal companies, who keep telling us that we totally do, despite many scientists saying that renewable energy is ready to go whenever). We don’t NEED blackberries from Mexico year-round, or a whole hell of a lot of the things we have come to rely on and consider part of our every day lives. All of these things are unnecessary and shortcuts to progress.

The only - ONLY! - good, necessary thing we’ve seen in canon that dark magic was required for was using the magma titan’s heart for saving people from famine.

A lot of the complaints about sustainable energy and efforts to heal the planet as climate change become increasingly a crisis stem from the fact that doing things RIGHT, in a way that is sustainable and doesn’t strip every last resource out of our home, is that it takes time. It takes SO MUCH TIME to do things properly. Yeah, we can keep going with our coal and our gas-guzzler cars and our fracking and our rare-earth metals... but we ARE going to run out. And then what? Dark magic is the same principle. Eventually, you’re going to run out of resources.

5. Where I think the show is going My main beef with those (and there’s a lot of ya, so I’m not intending to single anyone out) who say that the writing is lazy for dark magic bad elfs good is that the show is not over. Wonderstorm is doing their damndest to give us the saga. And they’ve said, out right, that there WILL be books, if nothing else.

You can’t judge a story’s merits when it’s only been half told. Right now, what the show has done is it has shown us the worst and best of the elves (for example, Khessa’s purity test vs Rayla refusing to kill Ez so she doesn’t perpetuate a cycle of violence) and the worst and best of the humans (ex: Viren forcibly turning thousands of people into monsters against their will vs Viren risking his life in order to save thousands of people from famine). The show has done well to demonstrate that there is good and bad in everyone, and it’s the choices you make and the respect you show others’ autonomy that makes you a good or bad person. The dominoes are in place. The saga has only begun. Being mad that Ezran burned an army (that he likely knew from Soren was invulnerable to fire) or that Aanya shot Kasef in the face (when Opeli would have told her that Kasef conspired behind Ezran’s back to usurp the throne, which is AN ACT OF WAR btw) means you aren’t looking at the big picture. There WILL be consequences for those actions in later seasons, mark my words.

I’m sorry if you’re a Viren or Claudia stan, but they have made choices that hurt other people, and it is in no way shape or form Ezran or Callum or Rayla or ANYONE ELSE’S fault that they made the choices they did. Instead of being mad at the show for not portraying your fav as an innocent victim, be glad that you got such a wonderfully complex set of villains who, quite likely, will get a bomb-ass redemption arc. In fact, I’ll bet you anything that Viren’s walk back from the edge has already begun. The dude fucking DIED, and he’s not going to be eager to get in there and get all grabby with the power any time soon.

That’s what good writing IS - conflict. Tension. People making morally questionable choices. We like it because every day people are hypocrites and morally questionable. You, and I, and everyone we know. Nobody’s perfect and getting cranky and painting the protagonists with the broad villain brush so you can feel good about liking a problematic fave is... some peak tumblr bullshit, tbh. It’s okay to like characters who aren’t perfect. How fucking boring fiction would be if everyone was perfect.

Now if I can ask my mutuals to please tag their criticisms of the show that go in the vein of “the writing is bad because dark magic is portrayed so negatively/they don’t hold the protags accountable/elves good humans bad” with “TDP critical” I would greatly appreciate it. miss oleana! the plot rehaul for her is obvi making it look like shes connected or the real Big Bad, like oh she writes all his speeches and is like on your ass all the time and hes just a himbo figure head, when you beat early low level grunts theyll be like dont tell the boss i lost, she'd be soo mad! with midtiers ones being like please dont tell miss o-----!!! and high tier ones actually name dropping like miss oleana wont like this

POKEMON DOODLES. BETCHA DIDNT SEE THAT COMING.

These mediocre doodles are mostly for Omi. Theyre not even real characters from the games/show... its just... dont worry about it. Since im lazy its all just sketchy doodles. ((A shit ton of them under the cut!))

Hugo (Nat- ):

Candy (Nat- Naive): A not all together newbie. Im sure she was delighted to get he codename... and then less delighted that there was someone already called ‘Candyman‘.

Scarecrow or just ‘Crow’ (Nat- Modest): A spooky man who’ll fit whatever roll he needed for. Very flexible. Has an easy personality to deal with though hes not very forthcoming about himself personally... might be better in a job like this.

Lock (Nat- Quiet):

Doc (Nat- Careful): He has a lot of information on almost everyone... aside from Sickle whos doctor is Emanuel. Hes not a fighter and refuses to evolve because his tail was mutilated and he can be a Slowbro anymore. Hes somehow gained a weirdly dark organ harvester rep... maybe because hes rarely seen and peoples imagination go wild... but to the people under his care hes just a nice, tiny guy who does a good job of patching them up quickly. He will smuggle drugs however because now he gets to work in better conditions under Sickle... hes also got a strange morbid sense of humor.

Wisp (Nat- Hasty): An ice queen type, kinda haughty and smug but shes got the skills to back that up so no one can talk shit. Like ‘sure shes an asshole... but shes not wrong‘. She tries to work WITH people just so she can get them the fuck away from her as quickly as possible. She doesnt appreciate people overstaying their welcome and prefers to go solo. If she needs a partner she prefers another woman or at least a pretty man... but someone like Link or Skim would be better.

Skim (Nat- Sassy): Honestly just a nod to Catwoman in general.

Father (Nat- Serious): A very religious man, mute, demands perfection. If you work for him and fuck up and embarrass him youre in for a world of hurt. No matter how fond he may seem to be towards someone this is true. He doesnt play favorites and he doesnt want anyone under him to stagnate. You push yourself or HE’LL PUSH YOU. The operatives working under him are jokingly referred to as his ‘kids‘. Toward his equals he can be respectful... or maybe just tolerant.

Perma (Nat- Adamant): A cruel efficient lady. Has a thing for blades which is possibly why she has no trouble working for a guy like Sickle. The fact hes not interested piques her interest in him even more.

Gadget (Nat- Rash): Tries to be a fun gamer girl but her short temper makes it hard. Some suggest her codename should be ‘Tripwire‘ because of how unpredictably dangerous she can be... but she disagrees BECAUSE SHES A FUCKING DELIGHT. Can be a bit of a troll... and not the goofy fun kind (the malicious I’ll ruin your life if you cross me kind).

Blink (Nat- Calm) A Very obedient and very smart. Has a really droning dull voice and never loses his temper. Hes good at calming a certain Luxray down.

Mele (IDK)

Wool (Nat- Sassy) Plays dumb and pretty but hes rather clever and is a fun loving fella. Has a French accent. Master of disguise!

Wreckingball (Nat- Hardy): Has no real talent or skill. Hes just a tough bastard you call in if you need to fuck some shit up. Hes probably one of the more pleasant agents in Sickles crew and is chummy... probably not the greatest idea considering his coworkers are a bunch of shady assholes.

Mittens (Nat- Jolly): Hes another rather nice agent of Sickles. But hes not a dumbass like Wreckingball and has become of the head of the Sigma divison. He is a bit reckless tho. He can shoot his arms off and use them as weapons so he occasionally wears prosthetic arms and spends a lot of time with Doc.

Prick (Nat- Impish) Hes a smarmy lad who enjoys talking vaguely and annoying people. HIS NAME IS APPROPRIATE AND HE LOVES IT.

River (Nat- Naughty): Flirty and dangerous. Hes a killer but hes quick and efficient doesnt draw out anyones death. Not because hes nicer or squeamish or anything its because torture isnt in his job description. Hes great at getting people to think he honestly cares and like using built trust to crush his victims. He also like cucumbers! He somehow gets along well with Madam even though theyre both just being fake bitches.

Madam (Nat- Mild): Looks very dainty and delicate and uses peoples desire to please a pretty woman to take advantage of them. Shes not shy about minor edits to peoples memories to help her get away even though its illegal.

Cleo (Nat- Docile):

Cresent the Shiny Lycanroc (dusk form. Nat- relaxed)

Link the Golisopod (Nat- Quiet)-

Methuselah the Drampa (Nat- Mild)

Viola the Chatot (Nat- Naughty)

Sandstorm the Flygon (Nat- Adamant)... Her personality is like that of a strict teacher dont let her have a ruler unless you wanna get spanked. Shes neat and detail oriented and because shes so outwardly respectable... no one would ever suspect shes a fucking thief. Shes a collector of rare and valuable books and of course prefers original copies. Her social skills arent grea unless shes pretending to be someone shes not and gets embarrassed if she reveals too much about herself to anyone.

Cavendish the Tropius (Nat- Lax). Her personality is like shes on autopilot, she gets shit done but shes sorta checked out. Shed much rather just stay home but she also got expensive tastes and shes not rich.

Alkaloid (Nat- Lonely): A gloomy lass that craves companionship. Shes not great at making connections to people which is fine for her position but really wants to have someone to click with. After she lost her eye she became even more distant with people. Shes rather fond of Doc though their relationship is rather one sided... her projecting some strange friendship on him because he cares for her and keeps her secrets... but hes a doctor and its kind of his job.

Blanco (Nat- Quirky): A vain dramatic ladies man. Is a skilled in his job (of course) but he hates when hes gotta tone back his extravagant life. After a long job he likes to surround himself with lively people and have some fun. He thinks he works VERY well with others and thinks himself a perfect partner.... most find him obnoxious and a lot have told him so... he just takes all criticism as jokes and lets it roll off him. If nothing else hes very positive!

Mistletoe (Nat- Serious): He seems cold and scary but hes a man of honor (for a guy who tortures people for a living anyway). He refuses to harm anyone weaker than him and is very caring of children and will step in if he sees some injustice if he can. Rouge agents, traitors,and shit like that though... hes ruthless and is very good at prying information out of them. His hobby of developing new and dangerous poisons/chemicals are often tested on whoever hes toying with. ((He should have spots on the light red parts of his jacket... I forgot them IDK how OH WELL. I wanna tweak his costume a bit anyways. Vileplume colors are so bleh.))

Dust (Nat- Calm): Outwardly very charming but theyre not as sweet as they seem on the inside. Dust doesnt need to bring their victims in any kind of room to do their dirty work and prefers using their dust and psychic abilities to just mind fuck their victims into submission.

The Candyman the Alolan Muk (Nat- Quiet) is an annoyingly patient man and the perfect guy to call if you need to teach someone a lesson. If no one else can do it... THE CANDYMAN CAN. IDK what that Mr Mime did but he pissed Sickle off... Candyman has one weak point and thats his poor eyesight... and he’ll get very annoyed if you touch his glasses.

Doc gets a penpal.

BB Sparky helps Boat be a Pichu with the clever use of feathers and a pink marker.

Lees a hit with his mommas work friends.

Lee and his kids. (Sam and Sparky are his kids occasionally.) Hes a stronk boy but his health isnt the best... even Sam can feel a little guilty and worried when he causes trouble for his friend.

Alex is not an easy man to anger and hes very dangerous when hes angry but no matter how pissed off he is... just seeing Lee can sweep that all away. Alex can get away with a lot... but Lee still wont let him wear his preferred fighting attire. QQ so mean.

I revamped Boats friend Arcane. Hes a cop. ...he mostly hangs out with other dogs but also Boat. Nice guy, very righteous but also kind of a prideful asshole sometimes.

DSC 2x05 [SPOILERS]

This one was a real mixed bag for me. I really enjoyed watching it! And I thought that certain parts of it were really well done. It had a unified plot in the way that 2x03 “Point of Light” didn’t, but it did have the same over-stuffed feeling that episode gave me.

1) Resurrections are tricky, particularly in Sci Fi (vs. say Fantasy where it’s often easier to pull that off via magic or whatever) and I was happy about Hugh’s return but also I wondered if they could pull it off well. And they did! The technobabble around what happened to him made sense because it had character heart: Stamets’ behavior in the face of loss that brought about this situation, in his messed up/inbetween state in S1, felt emotionally authentic and the way Hugh navigated his impossible/terrible half-life felt true to him too. Like, discovering and using the bark felt very ic for him as a scientist and doctor.

It works because it fits within the science/ecology themes of Stamets’ overall arc. During wartime he did what so many scientists have done, which is let his research be weaponized. But it was also an earnest reaching for the sublime too - and out of that comes both destruction and creation. And the necessity of respecting nature - which doesn’t mean rejecting scientific inquiry, it means also recognizing the importance of limits to our ability to instrumentalize nature and bend it to our will.

IMO Stamets’ is going to be the one who advocates for shutting down the whole spore drive thing and burying the tech ultimately. NOT in a denial of science and the beauty of exploration, but out of respect for the balance of nature and the worth of natural phenomenon separate from how we can make them into tools to enact our will.

2) I liked the Spore!May/Tilly stuff. My monsterfucker senses were tingling at their comments about the kind of union they experience together and how they’re both into it... but, otoh, last episode the emphasis was on Tilly’s feelings about human!May and her regrets there. So it was weird to totally switch tracks and have no echos of that: here it was like spore!May didn’t carry that baggage of memory and regret? I’m not sure. I feel like they must have more planned for this storyline, to wrap it up. Particularly since IMO it’s going to connect to the final closing of the spore drive/burying of the tech in Stamets’ plot. I liked what we got, but I am also on a “wait and see” footing re: whether the components of Tilly’s story will come together well and fit with the overall themes.

It’s definitely about reaching out and risking connection/having faith even against the evidence: Tilly choosing to have faith in Spore!May, Spore!May choosing to trust Tilly and let Hugh live. So... components are strong. But I want the two different things May represents (human and spore) to be handled more.

3) I’m fascinated by what they’re doing with Philippa. Like... I thought they’d skipped over her development but now I see that they want us, the audience, to be with Michael in her uncertainty about what Philippa’s deal is. What does she intend? What’s her bigger plan?

Sometimes faith and trust can heal past damage (like with spore!May) as much as it can be healed. But sometimes you’re the frog trusting a scorpion. How do you decide?

All the super obvious Biblical imagery - the apple, the “snake” stuff - was really... on the nose, but in a fun way? Philippa is Satan tempting our St. Michael?

I mean, last season we had the good and bad angels (Gabriel and Michael) warring over the soul of the Discovery (and then Michael warring with Philippa for the soul of the Federation), so... /spreads hands/ IMO the end of S1 will prove to have only been the first battle in a war over the soul of the Federation potentially; depending on how they take Section 31.

And I speculate that Philippa is going to offer some kind of very real temptation to Michael at some point. (And not just in the sexy scenarios playing themselves out in my brain lol). IDK how that is going to go, but it’s being set up and it’s looking VERY interesting.

I’m happy for them to keep Philippa’s game under wraps if we can have this shared tension/uncertainty with Michael as this plot plays out.

4) It was so nice to have Ash back... I feel like he’s going to get used as a cat’s paw/honeypot by Philippa and/or Section 31 though. He very much feels like a smaller piece in a much, much bigger game with the way he was reintroduced as a connection to Section 31 and the power conflict between Philippa and Leland going on there. (By which I mean Philippa is basically running that show, for better or worse; bald-y does not have half her talent for maneuvering) I don’t think the “tra la la all the misfits together!” thing is exactly as advertised. Poor guy. He is Looking Good tho damn... His hair is just luscious. And the beard even works for me now? A++ work, stylists! Thank you svm :)

I thought the interactions with Michael were well handled - they still care about each other but a lot of stuff has gone down and they need to get to know each other all over again. And this time maybe take things slow? Since the first time they did things really fast.

5) I liked the opening voice over but the one at the end felt like too much? Too on the nose? And not exactly what I got out of the episode.... like, it seemed to be about the open question of faith/trust in *other people* not in some kind of a supreme being guiding your path. So there was this strange disjuncture between what I felt like the episode was getting at and where the voice over took it.

Also sometimes the religious references here just felt sort of thrown at the wall to see what would stick? Though I DO love Philippa as the snake tempting Michael. But it seemed a little fuzzy to me at times.

I would say Percy has natural abilities for cooking and keeping things organized from her past life. Everything she has know has been worked for so it isn’t really a ‘natural’ ability.

2. what activities have they participated in?

I mean they practice their magic, help in the shop, hang out with her friends.

3. what abilities do they have that they’ve worked for?

Anything involving experimenting on magical theory and magical practice. Percy didn’t have a lot of knowledge with magic, so this is something she worked heavily for and is proud of.

4. what things are they bad at?

Socializing. She may have a charisma of 19, but she will only use it when she needs to.

B: Basics1. what is their hair color?

Dark brown, borderline black

2. what is their eye color?

Completely silver (even the whites of her eyes. She has no pupil; tieflings)

Uhhhhhh Percy is made with light weight metal enough to appear human. So I would say roughly 150lbs,

Like a proper lady. Legs really tightly crossed and sitting up straight.

She sits in a chair and leans on her hand. Her legs are loosely crossed. She looks like she is pondering something.

3. what is their ideal comfort day?

Sitting in her little nook at the shop, reading a book and drinking tea.

4. what is their major comfort food? why?

Strawberry shortcakes with some sort of tea (pref pink). Percy associates tea with Midnight where she feels safe and the strawberry sweets with the happiness from the shop (since she always gets that treat on her way there).

5. who is the best at comforting them when down?

Basically everyone. I would honestly say Val.

D: Decoration1. how would they decorate a house if they had one under their name?

Lots of pastels and lots of pink. Dark wood would be the accenting furniture.

Her child is grown, they can decorate it how they want it.

3. how do they decorate their own room?

Pink pastel walls with large bookcases. Honestly books stacked on the floor, with lots of comfy chairs.

Percy wears vests and pants, sometimes she wears a bustle. She tries to keep her attire in trend with the latest fashion, but she doesn’t want to spend too much money on it.

She makes sure she looks presentable, but she won’t waste time on extra added details.

She restrains herself a bit, not to appear childish in her curiosity. But sometimes it slips out when she is talking to others she is interested in.

Her fashion and appearance does but her personality does not. Her whole existence is against the norm so like she embraces that.

If the trends are interesting, she follows them.

I mean she reads them when she gets around to it. She might be a little behind on the times, because she has her old magic books to read!

I would say her personality is pretty much out there. Like she doesn’t have deep dark secrets.

Read, experiment, or hang out with her friends!

Wren!

I don’t really know? I guess her loyalty and drive is pretty great.

Well, Percy is always talking excitedly about new things. She is also extremely loyal to the friends she made. She would probably drop everything to help a friend in need.

Percy likes a lot about herself, however she always feels like there is another person inside of her. She is afraid of her dark self and her past self Faith and how those personalities influence her behavior in the present.

Their sociability and their true memories.

Could you tell me about your new oc Joanna?

Ok so this is gonna be hella long tho. Under the cut are spoilers so if you don’t wanna know, don’t read it. Her faceclaim is Phoebe Tonkin!

Joanna Michaels is a S.H.I.E.L.D Agent with a high ranking but nobody truly know her story which lead to a lot of rumors. Joanna is truly one of the best and is really devoted to her job. Like, she had basically zero life because she’s living for it. Joanna pretty much want to help and protect and using her abilities for good, althought she can uses nasty/dirty/bad way to get her way. Jo’s very loyal to her friends and her ideals which can be hard cause she’s hella stubborn. Joanna is also overconfident and guarded to people. You can’t make her talk unless you can her trust or even when you do, you’ve fifty percent of chances to not having an answer. Joanna’s mentor is Nick Fury, kinda. He was one of the first to believe in her enough to shake her up. Basically, he’s the only one who tell Jo straight to her that she did some shits without being royally ignored. She believes in Fury more than anyone so his disappearance is kinda shaking her. Tony’s also one of his friend and they’re very alike althought Jo’s way wiser in some way. Tony trust Joanna and believes in her judgment cause he feels like she’s always been more altruist than him (which she don’t believe). Most of people are ?? in front of them cause she looks like a kiddo compared to him amd yet he actually listen to her??? Joanna’s other main relationship is with another ocs although not all details are decided. Sharon and Joanna are basically a bombass duo. Sharon is more a follower of the rules whereas Jo doesn’t mind to not follow all of them when necessary. Sharon stop Joanna’s stupid decision on mission (cause in the rush, Jo’s basically can act like a Tony tho) whereas Sharon is pushed by Joanna to take some independence. They’re like sisters, having each other back, and Sharon is actually the one who know Jo’s by heart and a strong support system. They’re basically besties as well partner. Joanna and Clint also are close. Both of them are sarcastic, sassy and a little bit stubborn so they’re like cat and dog. They bicker all the time but push the other to be better out of competition. Apart from Sharon (they’re rarely go to mission together in fact), Joanna is Clint’s partner since Natasha mostly go alone. They’re very strong together and efficient which is why SHIELD forgot about the damage they did. In the end of the die, Joanna and Clint are a duo, althought they don’t talk about everything, they trust each other and know they can count on each other. (She knows about the Bartons family and Clint gave her daughter the middle name of Joanna after she saved him from an ennemy allowing him to see his daughter at the hospital). Then there Steve Rogers which is little bit more complicated as well her family (more under the cut).

As for her love interest, I thought of Bucky cause I love him but also Joanna knows what it is to be in War, to risk her life. I think that she might suffer from PTSD (maybe after one of the Avengers, idk yet) so she get him. Joanna has this warm and relentless side for people she loves where she can offers them everything she had. I think that Bucky need that kind relationship where he’a got support and love but no pressure. Bucky could be the kind of guy to support Joanna, to help her to carry the weight on her shoulders but also how to deal with grief. Their relationship would have a rocky start but with CA:CW, they’ll start to see each other in another light. I also thought Joanna/Sam as a pairing. Joanna can be very pressured and tensed, as if she carried the world on her shoulder. Jo’s practically never rest for a very specific reason, Sam could honestly be amazed by how badass Joanna is but also his loyalty and faith in her belief. Sam could help her to loose a little, accept that she can’t do everything alone and be a support system/partner she wanted. They’d be the kind of couple to jokes around, goofing and being dork to help each other to loose a little. But they would also be confident and trustworthy of each other. (I’m biased cause I love Sam Wilson). Then there’s Thor but it would be a guilty pleasure tho.

Younger, Joanna already had abilities such as high stamina, agility, strength a little bit enhanced but scientist did other experiences which lead her to have new abilities. Joanna first star in the first Avengers as a member but also to check on different people since she knew few of them and how to deal with them. Like, Nick wants her to be the Glue tbh.

Now the spoilers! Joanna’s real name is Joanna Michaela Sarah Carter and later Rogers and she’s the daughter to Steve and Peggy. Her mother used to call her Joanie or Mica, her dad will call Jo, Joan or even Joanie. Stark, Clint and Sharon calls her Joey/Jo (little headcanon tbh) She inherited her middle name from her uncle, Michael and third name for Steve’s Mom.

Joanna was born months after Steve crashed and it was hard at first but soon enough accepted it. Joanna always admired her mom and the latter always told who her real father was. But she kept it secret cause her mother asked it (only SHIELD and Stark family knew it). She was raised by her Mom who taught her how to fight, her legacy, the SHIELD and her ideals but also her step-father who were pretty cool with her tbh. Like, he legit taught her a bunch of things and always supported even when she wanted to be in the SHIELD. Jo also have brothers she loves, kept her secret even now and they just loves each other more than anything (even if they’re old now). Joanna was practically trained all her life to be in SHIELD so when she was 21, Jo took her chances but it wasn’t easy at first. Either people would suck her boots because of her lineage or on the contrary being rude/unfair (especially from men/mysoginist) so when she had the chance, she participated in an unauthorised experience with a bunch of Agent. Thanks to her biology, she survives as well another on and became enhanced. At first, ppl weren’t happy but when they saw the benefit, they accepted Joanna fully but she always had a pressure/weight of legacy on her shoulders. But it didn’t meant she tried to be perfect, she tried her best but always noticed the eyes. So over the years, she created another person. Joanna Michaels, a regular Agent and Nick helped to hide the evidence.

Joanna and Peggy have this incredible bond tbh. Peggy always been proud of Joanna and the women she came to be. She knew she did well, she didn’t raised a perfect soldier but a woman ready to fight for those she loves. You’ll never find someone loving and admiring Peggy than Joanna Michael Sarah Carter and isn’t afraid to show it. So when Peggy developed Alzheimer, Joanna felt like she lost her mother and hated to see her like this. Peggy even forgot about Joanna sometimes, or Steve’s sacrifices or her sons which made Joanna sick cause she felt like Peggy Carter died and was lost. Her real death totally shake her up and Joanna loose it and channeling everything into chasing Zemo.

Joanna and Steve are also a piece of cake. All her life, Joanna admired Steve, she heard all those stories and he was basically a Knight for her. It was odd and it was surreal for her to know that Steve was her Dad. Steve never thought of having a child, and she knew it. So when he emerged, Joanna didn’t told him the truth and instead tried to distance herself for a lot of reasons. 1) She was afraid he didn’t want. He had a lot to assimilate, and having a kid — a grown kid — never were in his plans so ave was afraid of rejection. 2) She was afraid it would a disrespect of her adoptive father. 3) She was afraid to be disappointed. But when he learnt it, Steve is shaken, shocked and amazed by Joanna cause he could see Peggy in her but also himself. Honestly, they just have a natural relationship where they’re start learn about each other, getting closer and bonding. In the end, Joanna felt herself lucky because she had the chance to have two amazing fathers and that people she knew started to die so she should take every chances to not be alone/having a family. At the end, Steve had father instinct to her wanting to protect her, he love(d)s her more than anything and trust her more than anybody. They have these healthy relationship where they believed in each other, respect boundaries, wants to protect each but step up when the other is in real danger. Joanna and Steve’s pretty much aren’t afraid to call each other or disagree but still respect each other (and ofc, still oves each other)

Discovery: What’s Past is Prologue

That was GREAT! This is Long :| :| :|

Ok, so this episode managed to be both a mile-a-minute, actioned-packed THRILLAGANZA and a This-is-why-we-love-Trek Federation Lovefest, which is Quite A Feat owo

For any new Dear, Dear Readers thinking about venturing below the Cut: Over time I’ve found that writing conventional reviews for fan-media usually leads to me producing 10k word dissertations on them, so I do bullet-point reviews instead, sticking to core-reactions. This is STILL almost 3k words though, so, just be aware: when I say something is Long I ain’t kidding :| :| Also my reaction to stuff like Trek tends to be much more Ecstatic that my TSoW review, so expect... Informality o_o o__o o___o

Ok, so Discovery’s Landry was Fed!Landry afterall.

Looks like the Terrans have some sort of Holographic camouflage? Maybe it’s just something Stamets worked out on his own, tho, given how the Terran Empire works.

So Lorca got to the Fediverse the same way Kirk originally arrived in the Mirrorverse! I wonder if that means Fed!Lorca was transported to the Mirrorverse and died? Lorca’s ultimate Mirrorverse-fate was never explained so it’s difficult to say.

This ep’s mutiny/innership fight easily ranks up there with the best from DS9 and Voyager(the only two series with genuinely interesting/exciting examples). The battle over this city-sized planet-killing spacewarpalace is well-paced, tense, and both tactically and emotionally satisfying ouo

It also makes good use of the Terrans. We get to see some examples of their more aggression-oriented tech(like interior defense turrets and the like), examples of how powerful individuals hoard tech to themselves ala Mirror!Kirk’s Tantalus Field(Georgiou’s secret emergency transport, her bracelet, and the Stamets-designed fungal-tech integrated into the ship. Though I kept hoping she’d deploy that murderdisk from last ep again; no joy :T), and some examples of major philosophies within their society(a warrior-ethic in Georgiou’s appreciation for Burnham’s plan and fighting-ability, and her willingness to die fighting to buy Burnham time and display the ideals of her social station near the end, and Lorca’s “Man of Destiny” nonsense throughout).

“...he preyed on my Sentiment, my Weakness for your Face; It will NOT happen again.” Mirror!Georgiou is just so deliciously campy uwu uwu I like how the showrunners chose to make melodrama one of the distinguishing characteristics of the Mirrorverse :> :> :>

“...The Terrans are egotistical enough to believe they can replenish this resource before it collapses.” HMMMMM WHERE COULD THESE MIRRORVERSIAN HUMANS POSSIBLY HAVE GOTTEN THAT TRAIT FROM???? Tho, as far as they go, this is probably one of the subtler Global Warming/Carbon Economy analogies to ever pop up in SFF media.

“Make the Empire Glorious Again!” We all, of course, See What You Did There :| :| Though again: much less hamfisted that the usual “Make America Great Again” references media’s filled up with over the last year.

Anyone else notice the gigantic gold frieze of Georgiou over the Imperial Throne??

Saru: “I will Not Consider leaving you Behind.” SARU IS SUCH A GOOD CAPTAIN }:| }:|

It’s a small thing, but Lorca’s continued and varied use of psychology as a weapon and tool of manipulation, something which goes back to the beginning of the series and his use of that distress signal to “motivate” Discovery’s crew, continues to impress me with the showrunners concern for consistent characterization, and their understanding of how complex characters and stories can be built from reiterating simple concepts and character notes in different situations.

Destiny’s not a thing, of course, it’s a fallacy of ego to believe that 1)occurrences involving you are about you and 2)that, because they involve you, they were meant to happen and play out as they did. Fundamentally, it’s self-narration; a recontextualization that, simultaneously, places oneself as the author of one’s life(since you are deciding what it means) and apotheosizes one’s life(and thus oneself) by declaring that narrative the product of divine will. That Lorca’s primary dislike for Stamets seems to arise not from his betrayal but from his rationalist rejection of Fatalism tells you a lot about his narcissism, and how central it is to his worldview.

There’s an interesting metacommentary about how “grittiness” is treated as serious, masculine, and realistic while optimism is treated as frivolous, feminine, and fantastical begged by Lorca’s conversation with Burnham here, and his assertions that the Mirrorverse is “the real world” and the Fed a “failed social experiment”. It’s also a good reminder of his nature as a scientist, and says much of how he thinks and justifies his behavior, that he would choose scientific metaphor for denying the reality of the Fediverse(though obvsl he’d need SOME way to do it to keep himself motivated to return, given that he’s way too egotistical, and too chauvinistically Terran, to just accept that both are equally real).

It also reveals that he REALLY doesn’t understand Burnham at all. She’s a culturally Vulcan Human, for Pete’s Sake; how deluded do you have to be to think that this sort of essentialist argument about biological “Superiority” and sociogenetic Eugenical(“Social Darwinism” in common parlance but, given this thinking predated Darwin and his theory, and other things, I don’t like the term) rhapsodizing would appeal to her, when her whole existence disproves it?

“...that’s why we have duty to lead”? That seems like a bit of a non-sequitur, but I couldn’t get captions to work on this ep so I can’t say for sure that this is what he said. If it is, that’s a really twisted conception of “Duty”, to cast it as the driving concept behind species-segregation and Eugenic Hierarchy. Also, he really doesn’t understand why she did what she did at the battle of the binary stars, or what that fight was about. He seems to think 1)she caused the fight, and 2)it was a conflict about preserving Federation “cultural purity” from some kind of Klingon “corruption”.

Lorca’s comment about Burnham’s “gifts”… taken in hand with the last ep’s “someone better came along, you know how it is” comment, suggest Lorca is incapable of conceiving of people in non-instrumental terms, especially in a romantic context.

Burnham’s explication of the existentialism and affirmation at the heart of the Federation is Pure and Good u_u

Stamets: “We’ll have to use all our Spores. We won’t be able to jump back home” Ensign Rhys: “We’ll need to be close to make that shot |:T” The Federation! ^u^

Ensign Detmer: “I don’t think we can avoid the blast”, Cadet Tilly: “our shields can’t repel the blast and we’ll all die” Saru: shakes head and clicks: *Inspiring Motherfucking Shakespearean Goddamn Speech*[1] THE FEDERATION! THE FEDERAAATION!!!! PEOPLE LOOK IT IS THE FEH-EH-EHDERAH-AH-AH-TIONNN!!!!!!!! :’D :’‘D :’‘‘D

But Seriously, THIS is probably one of, if not The, best Star Trek Captain’s speech ever.

The speech, the action, the at-turns practical, sappy, and optimistic Fed dialogue, the explication of Federation ideals in the face of true danger, challenge, and Doubt: THIS ep is just such a summation of everything that makes people Love Star Trek.

That their writing staff is aware enough to give Burnham the line, “But know this: I’m offering you my Mind; nothing more.” when making her faux-offer to sacrifice herself for her crew is one of the many reason I love this series uwu uwu

As always, Science and Tilly saves the days! I like how simple the solution is, though it’d have been more believably Physicist of Stamets to say not “but not just an explosion” but rather, “but an explosion is a Shockwave!” Also: Trek ships do Quite a Bit of cosmic surfing, don’t they? This sort of thing’s been the solution to dire situations rather frequently o.o

The warp bubble technobabble is equally simple(as opposed to TNG’s frequent reliance on nonsensical verbiage), but I don’t like the solution they went with. A Warp Bubble Warps space. The Mycelial shockwave produces an energetic wave(an explosion) in space, but it also ripples through levels of subspace(including the mycelial network). So theoretically, the Warp Bubble could be attuned in such a way as to interact with these subspace waves in a fashion which would allow Discovery to “ride” them into and through the Network. That’s how I’d have written it, at least.

I’d also like to reiterate, yet again, how well Discovery has integrated respect for Tilly, a mere Cadet, into the Federation ethos. They’ve handled this way better than TNG did with Wesley.

Lorca: “I truly admire you all. You proved such Excellent Clay for my genius leadership” Like I said “Instrumental” >:T Such good, consistent characterization!

Also: Lorca: *Melodramatic Villain Speech* Saru: “Whatever, Napoleon, show me my crewman!” SUCH A GOOD CAPTAIN.

Also Also: Federation pragmatic optimism vs the gothic egotism of Terra

Saru yelling “FIRE!” was SOOOOOO Satisfying owo

Shit Fuck-Uping Commences

Trek-talk will inevitably focus on things other than combat because, philosophically, that’s not really what the show’s about or what draws most fans to it(see above), but Discovery really does have, hands down, the Best fight choreography I’ve ever seen in a Trek series, and most of the movies too. It probably helps that they have Actresses and Actors, like Michelle Yeoh and Jason Issacs, with substantive experience in stage-fighting, but everyone’s performance in these melees is just so excellent, and the flow of them is so fluid and sure, that it HAS to be their fight crew. Also: have I ever seen a mace and its use portrayed with reasonable accuracy in a screen fight before? No; but here’s Burnham, just absolutely TRASHING people with that scepter like a Goddamn Boss :> :> :>

Though there’s an obvs level of unreality to this: you clock someone anywhere around the head, neck, or shoulders with a steel mace and they ain’t keeping fighting you. They’re going Down; they’re DONE

Georgiou’s fighting here is just so brutal and clean. The way she just turns around and slashes that guy’s throat. Her meaty-stabs to that other guy’s gut. Her throw into Lorca’s shoulder. Her KICKING HER OWN KNIFE OUT OF THE AIR WHEN LORCA THROWS IT BACK!!! Magnificent u_u Beautiful u_u u_u Majestic u_u u_u u_u

Lorca Egotism Watch: Unceremoniously Cuts down Landry for having the gall to fight Burnham. Yup |:T |:T She just can’t catch a break, but that’s what you get for loyalty to a person who only sees other people as means to an end.

One particular thing I like about the choreography is how they allow Yeoh to use her smaller size and stabler center of gravity to her advantage. Having her roll, dodge, duck under Lorca’s slashes, use throws and grab, attack Lorca’s feet; such excellent choices, especially given industry standard which is to ignore physical differences and have everyone fight like they’re a 6ft+ muscular man.

The mutual face-punch was a nice injection of comedy into this fight sequence(always a good idea, I think, to give the audience a bit of release from tension). Looks like Lorca gets in one of the trophic Star Trek double-fist hammer strikes in at the end. An utterly useless attack irl, but it’s Star Trek and the Forms must be Honored u_u

Lorca: “Don’t make me have to kill you!” Burnham: “You Won’t.” Bad. ASS. Badass. It is a natural byproduct of Vulcan Logic that their dialogue be the Tightest Shit at all times u_u u_u

Burnham’s fight with Lorca is Astounding, but I don’t know enough about fight choreography to really talk about it. Wow it’s cool to watch, though.

“We would have helped you get home, if you had asked” THE FEDERATION!!!!!!!! And more than that; hell, without the war, they’d have probably helped you kick the crap out of the Terran Empire.

Georgiou running Lorca through was Extreme Satisfying owo owo

Looks like my theory of TylerVoq undermining Lorca’s plans is nixed. I’m not upset though, as there’s something satisfying in allowing plots to be separate, rather than tying them all together in one big resolution.

Burnham running out of cover to telesnatch Mirror!Georgiou out of the fight as she energizes THE FEDERATION! THE FEDERATI- Ok, you know my reaction to this stuf. THE IDEALS! THE IDEALS!! This raw concentration of Ideals and Sentiment will Physically Killing me isttg u_u u_u u_u

They tied the science part of the escape to the action of the shipboard fight so seamlessly, and continue the tension of those scenes into the escape so excellently!

Another Little Thing that’s actually a Big Thing which I’m only now just noticing, probably because Oladejo(Ensign Owosekun) gets so much more screentime in this ep, is how good a job Discovery does at lighting and filming non-white skin and particularly dark skin, even when not a main character. I’m thinking of it particular in comparison to Agents of SHIELD which is absolutely atrocious on this point. At no point, even when they are in a dark area, or in red light, do Martin or Oladejo or any of the Black cast look washed out or obscured, as Henry Simmons almost always does as Mac even in some well-lit scenes. Just really excellent.

I REALLY HOPE that “Thanks Hugh” and aria isn’t the last of Culber. I continue to wish they’ll rez him, somehow. That was an objectively Romantic scene, though u_u

The ending revelation that they’re 9 months in the future and the Klingons have won the war is certainly surprising, but none of that’s official Fed history, so I’m pretty confident we’ll be seeing some time travel in the final eps. I’m a bit trepidation as to what Mirror!Discovery’s been up to since they’ve been gone <:[

Condensed Marvel Movies

I’ve talked to a few people who were planning on watching infinity war without having seen a bunch of the other marvel movies, and they said they had nerdy friends pushing them to watch every single marvel movie that came out before Infinity War, which is frankly ridiculous. I made this kind of helpful guide to help out said people.

Iron Man * A man named Tony Stark owns Stark Industries, he’s very rich and very smart * Has a friend named Colonel Rhodes and an assistant named Pepper * There is a government agency called S.H.I.E.L.D. * Tony Stark built a robot suit to escape from terrorists and became iron man and has some energy thingy in the middle of his chest bc there is shrapnel in there

Iron Man 2 * Tony Stark is officially Iron Man but oh no his chest thing is killing him * He briefly gets a new assistant but she's actually an assassin who works for shield * He makes more suits gets a new chest thing gives one of his suits to his friend Colonel Rhodes and gets together with his assistant yay everyone is happy

Thor * Norse gods * Thor is the god of thunder and he has a kick ass hammer * His brother is Loki * There is a lot of tension there Loki does some messed up shit and basically Thor ends up on earth for a bit but then he goes back * S.H.I.E.L.D. shows up just long enough to meet Thor and then peace out * Oh also shield has another assassin but this one is male and has a bow

Captain America: The First Avenger * Boring, vanilla, skinny white dude named Steve wants to join the army in WW2 * He can’t so instead he gets injected with a super serum that makes him very fit * Also apparently he doesn’t age anymore hooray * A Nazi scientist tries to steal a very powerful cube called the tesseract and hitler almost wins but instead the scientist dies and the cube goes somewhere in the ocean * Captain America drowns and wakes up 80 years later and meets S.H.I.E.L.D. (specifically there is a man with an eye patch his name is Nick Fury he’s only there for like 2 seconds tho) * This one is long bc it’s sole purpose was to set up for the avengers movie * Also Captain America had a best friend named Bucky but he fell off a train * Also also Tony stark’s grandfather actually found the super powerful cube its not in the water anymore

Marvel’s The Avengers * There are two assassin-type people named Black Widow and Hawk Eye we have literally never met them b4 but apparently they work for SHIELD ok sure * Loki tries to steal the very powerful cube in order to become Earth’s ruler so SHIELD gets Iron Man, Captain America, and the Hulk (or Dr. Banner) to help them defeat him, then Thor falls out of the sky and joins the crew * Agent Coulson, the og SHIELD guy, dies at some point whoops #neverforget * Turns out Loki teamed up with some aliens, they attack New York with giant centipedes but Iron Man throws a nuke at them and they win * Thor takes the powerful cube to the Norse gods’ floating castle * Also it turns out that the aliens’ master had another master oohoohoo what a reveal didn’t see that one coming

Iron Man 3 * Iron Man can control his suit with his watch now * I think his girlfriend can shoot fire out of her arms??? * He gets surgery so he doesn’t need the chest thing but I don’t think that matters anyway * He destroys a lot of his Iron Man suits but I don’t think that matters either

Thor: The Dark World * Thor’s girlfriend discovers a new super powerful stone, but this one is red * A bunch of elves try to steal it so Thor has to take Loki out of prison so they can fight the elves together * They win but Loki dies but actually not really he pretends to be their father and Thor leaves so Loki gets to fake being king yay * Also there is a guy collecting stones he takes the red one but the blue cube (yes its part of the stones) is still with the Norse gods but actually there are 5 stones * There’s an ice monster in London not sure why he’s important though

Captain America: Winter Soldier * Captain America is a vanilla goody-two-shoes obviously he’s the only guy who hung around with the government agency * While out running he makes a new friend and when they’re on the run from said government agency later on he gets metal wings * Oh hey look his best friend Bucky is back! Not dead, just an immortal Russian spy with amnesia and no arm * SHIELD was infiltrated by Nazis whoops how did that happen its ok though Captain America saved everyone not before almost dying though * Russian Spy Bucky pulls him out of the water after almost killing him and Steve takes that as a sign that he wants to be friends again so he goes looking for him * There are two x-men mutants in a lab somewhere idk

Guardians of the Galaxy * Ok this one is really complicated and annoying and has way too many main characters but whatever * So a smol goofy human child named Peter is stolen by aliens and taken to space and some shit goes down I honestly can’t remember * He finds a glowing orb which turns out to be ANOTHER super powerful stone yay but not before its stolen by an evil person working for a big purple guy who was actually in charge of attacking New York with aliens that one time * He teams up with a raccoon, a tree, a blue alien, and a sexy green alien (she and peter get together later I think) who happens to be the adoptive daughter of the purple guy and they try to defeat the evil guy and succeed * The tree dies and creates a baby tree who’s honestly so much better also the smol goofy human child is actually only half human * The super powerful stone hangs out on some rando planet but its a super powerful stone so u know its coming back

Avengers: Age of Ultron * The Avengers crew is back together! They’re rounding up all the left over Nazis who are still just kinda there and they eventually find the x-men twins but they’re x-men twins so obviously they run away * Turns out the left-over nazis also had a super powerful stone and Iron Man uses it to build an A.I. which surprise surprise turns out to be evil and tries to kill all the humans buy dropping a city from the sky but that’s really not important * In Korea someone is building a fake body around the super powerful stone for the evil robot but the Avengers steal it and put Iron Man’s digital assistant in there instead * They defeat the evil robot and now they have a British red man floating around in a cape which is pretty cool also the male mutant twin dies * The larger-than-average purple man is getting annoyed by his inability to find the super powerful stones and puts on a big glove

Ant-Man * Literally nothing useful is revealed in this film except for like 3 things * Over the past four years, Paul Rudd has somehow managed to age -2 * There is now a hero with the frankly useless ability to become very, very small * Captain America found his best friend!

Captain America: Civil War * For a movie centered around one guy, this has way too many characters. Also, this is the official time to start shipping stucky (Steve and Bucky a.k.a. immortal boyfriends) * So basically the Avengers (who are now a mix of some og members and other less interesting new members) accidentally destroy a building that kills a few ppl and the UN is not pleased * They propose that the government should have more control over the crew and Tony (Iron Man) agrees bc he’s still feeling guilty about his killer robot but Steve doesn’t like that idea and the Avengers (old and new) split into democrats and libertarians * The democrats (led by Tony Stark) get a couple new members and now the teams are as follows: democrats - iron man, spider man, ant man, a panther super hero, iron man’s bff, the red British AI guy, and black widow (aka one of the assassins who’s been hanging around for a while) vs the libertarians - Steve, his boyfriend Bucky, his new friend with wings, the living mutant twin, ant man (why), and the other assassin who’s been hanging around for a while * Basically shit goes down and Steve and Tony are no longer friends, then Bucky runs away to hang out with the panther hero, and spider man is kinda part of the crew yay * Also Steve loses this really cool shield that’s stuck with him for a while now which isn’t important but it’s a bit sad #neverforget

Doctor Strange * Benedict Cumberbatch is an American (ew) doctor with an extremely stupid last name who injures his hands in a car accident so he can’t operate anymore * In search of a cure he finds some pretty dank wizard monks who teach him their wizard monk ways and give him a sentient cape and another super powerful stone except this is literally the only important one because it controls time * Doctor Strange (seriously wtf) defeats some evil person—but honestly who even gives a shit anymore—and then he meets up with for some reason Thor and Loki

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 * This movie is honestly completely unrelated to anything so I’ll be brief * Sexy green alien aka Gamora has an estranged droid sister with whom she reconciles but her sister leaves again to try and kill their purple dad * Peter finds his real father but it turns out he’s evil and he fucked a lot of animals which is pretty gross but it’s ok because peter kills him in the end * They find this bug-like alien who also looks kinda like a female human and she starts tagging along with their crew and they go off to kill the purple guy

Spider-Man: Homecoming * This is another relatively useless movie but we do learn a few interesting things * Spider-man is a goofy, relatable high school kid with a questionable taste in women and a really beautiful father-son relationship with Tony Stark * He’s also low key not part of the crew but he really really wants to be * Unrelated but Zendaya plays a really hot nerd girl who I refuse to believe isn’t gay to some degree

Thor: Ragnorok * Thor gets fucking hot ngl also his relationship with Loki is sibling goals * So it turns out Thor has a super evil sister and she comes back in order to kill a lot of people, so Thor and Loki end up on some planet where people have to fight each other for the entertainment of the rich people gladiator style, except Loki obviously befriends the rich people and Thor has to stay a gladiator. Also for some reason the hulk is there * They meet a super hot lady goddess and all of them go to the floating Norse god castle and kill the evil sister and get on a ship but then they run into a big most likely evil ship oh no

Black Panther * Really this is the only one that you should actually watch like every single character is both awesome and attractive I would date all of them but u know Shuri is my soulmate * Seriously just watch the movie I’m not summarizing this one
