First Impressions of Animorphs!

I'm listening to the Animorphs series while I work, through Animorphs Aloud - a fan made reading of the series. Here are my first impressions/random thoughts about them! Spoilers below if you haven't read them.

Book 11: The Forgotten

Been a while since I done one of these huh? I caught up with all the recorded books so pace is gonna slow down considerably.

Advantage of having smooth brain -> no place for yeerk to hide

We gonna have monkey morph in this book? In a jungle? How are they gonna get to a bloody jungle

Hm interesting that we're being given a specific time. I'm guessing there's going to be time travel in this book, which is always a tricky subject

The fly and cockroach morphs definitely feel over-represented. Could have been a seagull or a pigeon. Then the cars and rain would be no problem.

Do you guys ever wonder what things are too big to have meaning with our human perception?

Serious doubts that Ax can drive this thing. I smell hubris.

The sound effects of this audiobook are delightful I must say

Having two dracon beams hitting one another is a pretty easy feat to achieve if you put your mind to it. I wonder why sario rips aren't more of a problem. Or do they happen all the time and there's protocol.

There's been a lot of emphasis on Jake making decisions in this book so far. And all of them seem to be the wrong one

Pfff piranhas?? I've worked with piranhas they're absolute cowards, takes them ages to approach a dead bit of meat. You guys are fine. I guess they were a big trope back in the day, still kind of funny to see though knowing what they're really like.

Oooooh. Ax is the space cadet monkey. I legitimately got confused when this was said in the earlier flashback. Thought we were gonna meet some new alien that looked like a monkey ha.

I wish humans had evolved to keep more of our climbing capabilities instead of being so ground based. We're not even very good on the ground except with stamina.

Sudden jungle natives! They might not be able to tackle a Hork-Bajir head on but I bet those guys are susceptible to venom/poison. Also really lucky that a monkey spirit is something good to them and not some horrible demon.

Jaguars eat bloody crocodiles man. Funny how piranhas are hyped up as super scary but not the jaguar which is honestly the most badass of the big cats. They can bite through SKULLS.

Wait so the way to get out of the sario rip was straight up dying. That's...dark. But what would an animorph book be without a little bit of trauma?

okay so hear me out: what if the rules of the Sario Rip, for reasons unknown, were bent just a little and Jake had died in the jungle (think it was #11 the forgotten? idk the one with the jaguar on the cover) but everyone else snapped back to the present. like do you think the other animorphs would have been able to hold their own at that point? assuming that jake doesnt just snap back with them ofc

Hmmm. So we see Jake taken out of commission a few times, in #29, in MM3, and in #37.

MM3 is probably the closest to the scenario you're describing, since Jake dies for real and stays dead for a while. The Animorphs then splinter into mini-groups, each focused on their own agenda. Rachel and Ax, in true Rachel-and-Ax fashion, start killing everything that moves (Hessians, French sailors, Nazi tanks) and only stop to think too late. Cassie and Tobias focus on information gathering, first in the English Channel, then in Princeton textbooks, then among German defenders. Marco, in true Marco fashion, rage-quits the war even though the war isn't done with him. The three groups aren't opposing each other, per se, but they do get in each other's way.

In #29 and #37, the situation isn't as dire — Jake's sick, or traveling. Then it comes down to spats between Rachel and Marco about who's in charge. In #29 it's resolved in the span of Rachel declaring she's team lead, Marco objecting, them both biting each other, and Cassie shouting that He-llo, they have bigger problems here! In #37 the spat lasts the whole book, although Marco acknowledges at the end that Rachel's leadership style is best for emergency situations and his is best for long-term planning.

So, a permanently Jake-less team as of #11 could go either way. Tobias is always one bad day away from going rogue, and Marco will take any excuse to stop Animorphing, so the team could splinter. If Rachel and Ax aren't on a rampage together, then it seems more natural for Ax and Tobias to make one mini-team while Rachel and Cassie make another. I could see Ax and Tobias carrying out some kind of mass-casualty Alloran-worthy plan like we see them contemplating in #46. Rachel and Cassie might end up distracted on a bunch of side quests if Cassie's focus on the little guy combines badly with Rachel's short-sightedness, and they end up becoming straight ecoterrorists who forget about the yeerks in their eagerness to smash oil fields. Marco meanwhile is catching up on all those PowerPuff Girls reruns he whines about missing, and pressing his own face into a pillow so hard he can barely even hear the guilty thoughts anymore.

If the team instead keeps it together, their best chance of success would be if a compromise between Rachel and Marco could hold long-term. It's less ideal than having a single person in charge, but the only ones who would be halfway effective at leading (Ax, maybe Tobias) are the ones least willing to take up the job. Maybe Rachel and Marco could learn to trust each other over time. Maybe the team would get captured or killed. Maybe Ax could be talked into leading if the other four forcibly elect him as prince, and Ax would probably be better suited to lead the team alone. Hard to say.

For the anon who asked about Bernadette Brady’s 1995 article on eclipse Saros cycles, I went ahead and read it this morning. It’s kind of interesting. Perhaps it’s useful in western astrology, but I feel like her article has some problems. Such as, can you spot the glaring error in this section from page 13:

Or on another level dealing with English history, SS 6 North seems to occur in important years of expansion in English history. It started in 850 ce. with the birth of Alfred the Great and then produced eclipses which aspected the Battle of Hastings chart in the following years:

1066 - William the Conqueror invades England. 1174 - England claims Scotland (William the Lion of Scotland captured). 1210 - England succeeds in taking over Wales and Ireland. 1409 - England takes Harleech the last of the Welsh rebellions. 1643 - Civil War under Cromwell. 1733 - Foundation of Georgia USA - first English settlement. 1751 - Clive of India takes Arcot - beginning of English rule in India. 1770 - James Cook claims the east coast of Australia for England. 1788 - First English settlement in Australia.

I’m not an expert on English or British history, but as an American, there is a GLARING and very obvious error in that time line. Specifically, listing Georgia as the first English settlement in the USA. WTF?! She’s only off by more than a hundred years and has selected the wrong location because Jamestown, Virginia, was the first permanent English settlement in the USA in 1607! 

When I was reading and saw that tremendous error I was quite shocked. I remember in 1995 there was a famous Disney movie that came out that summer, which referenced the Jamestown settlement. The movie was called Pocahontas. Yes, it’s not a factual retelling of history, but you’d think that if a big movie being released with trailers starting months beforehand that there would have been some awareness by the author when you publish an article like this with a major factual error, which does not seem to have been corrected in the last twenty-five years.

Prior to that, on pages 11 and 12, she started talking about the British royal family: 

The British royal family and The Battle of Hastings seem to have a very strong connections Sarios Series 18 North, commenced 4th Feb 1060 o.s. which is a Pluto Mercury combination linked with a Uranus to the Saturn Mars midpoint. It is defined as causing accidents and as a very physical eclipse and considered to be one of the more violent and difficult eclipse families. (Eagle and the Lark page 232 as well as Appendix 6) This Saros Series has now tragically touched the current British royal family twice. In Aug 22nd 1979 the Saros Series produced an eclipse at 20 Virgo, which conjunct the Jupiter of the Hastings chart. On the 27th August 1979 Mountbatten was assassinated by the IRA. 18 years later the same Saros Series of eclipses has struck again, this time it has formed a conjunction to the Hastings chart Saturn and Princess Dianna has been killed in a car accident.

Okay, interesting. This article was published in 1995, the Diana portion was added later, but she does not make it clear in her writing that she’s adding it after the publication. (At least not that I can tell from the pdf available from her website.) Anyhow, that’s two incidents in a series dating back to 1060 AD/CE. I’m kind of meh on the stats on this because in more than 800 years she only demonstrated any kind of effect twice. One of which was after this article was published, since the text available doesn’t demonstrate or infer that she suspected something would happen to a significant member of the BRF (or BRF-adjacent since Diana was divorced) prior to Diana’s death. This section has a stopped-clock is right twice a day aspect to it. 

Now we come to the part where she talks about Prince William on pages 12-13.

The knowledge of Saros Cycles also gives the astrologer an insight into the client who is born on an eclipse. If a person is born a day either side of a solar eclipse, then in a sense they become part of that Saros Series with their life interwoven with the meaning of the Series. A note-worthy example of this occurred on the 21st June 1982. The heir to the British throne, Prince William, was born. This was also the date of a solar eclipse. The Saros Series which provided the eclipse was 2 Old North. Saros Series 2 Old North is finishing. It is in its last stages and only has a few more tiny partial eclipses around the South Pole. It started its life in 792 ce and completes in July 2036. This completion will occur when the Prince is 54 years old. The planetary energy of this series is: New Moon conjunct Jupiter on the Mars/Uranus midpoint Mercury = Venus/Saturn This talks of endings and separation of unions. Serious decisions about separation which eventually lead to better outcomes. To have Prince William involved in this series implies quite strongly that he is going to change the face of the monarchy or walk away from it, as his great uncle did. What lends further weight to this unfolding drama is that this Series started in the same period of history as the British monarchy itself. The first recognised King of England who could truly claim that title was the Anglo Saxon Ecgberht and he came to power in 802 ce. The series ends in 2036 with the heir containing this eclipse in his natal chart. I will leave it to you to draw your own conclusions.

My own conclusion is that what she’s talking about doesn’t work. The timeline math she has chosen is, um, interesting. She cites an eclipse for 792 AD/CE for an event that doesn’t take place until 10 YEARS LATER in 802 AD/CE. Um, what? Why is she skipping over eclipses in the years immediately prior to the event? It’s not as if 801 or 802 AD/CE were bereft of eclipses so that she had to use one ten years prior. This makes no sense whatsoever. This reeks of grand-scale cherry picking. 

Unless you consider that this article was written in 1995 during the War of the Waleses when all sorts of shit was being bandied about in the UK press between Charles and Diana. I suspect this article predates Diana’s Panorama interview, which might be saying a lot given what I just quoted. 

The most interesting example she had in this article was her personal client. I remain unconvinced by her cherry picking that anything she talked about will actually affect the BRF. Even in her better examples regarding the BRF, which was the assassination of Louis Mountbatten and the death of Diana, neither of those two incidents affected the line of succession. 

So don’t you worry about this article. Don’t lose a wink of sleep over it. Ever. William isn’t going to suddenly renounce the throne. William isn’t going to suddenly abdicate. This was written during the height of the press war between Charles & Diana. People throwing their weird emotions at William regarding him becoming king while he was a teenager is exactly why William is such a guarded person today. Can’t say I blame him.

Megamorphs #2:

Kinda freaky how the most effective survival tactic against getting eaten is to morph something bigger so you can explode out of the throat of whatever is trying to eat you. This happens way too often for my liking. (Or for the liking of any of these characters, I am sure.)

They've met a couple of new races (another hive-mind alien, hell ya) and I'm curious to see how awful they get devestated so that they don't leave a trace for humans to find in the future... hopefully they just... pack up and leave...? >_>

Also I wonder if the comet would be a powerful enough explosion for a Sario Rip.

Do you have OCs from other fandoms?

Well, why YES! A bit waaaay too much and even some old ones from long ago! Fandoms I like to explore are mostly games like TF2, Resident Evil, Dying Light, Legacy of Kain, Darkest Dungeon, and a few animations like Steven Universe (but mostly games). Some OCs, I’ve really worked alot on them and even have wrote/am writing fanfictions just like Sario Effect with my two Animorphs OCs. Others, well, they’ve been one-shot or haitus but were still memorable.

In all, I don’t often make OCs on the whim like a lot of artists do and THOSE PEOPLE ARE AWESOME to have such a vast collection than mine! It’s more like I create OCs if I see the world can be explorable and there’s much more to create the creators never took or didn’t think of. It becomes FUN for me at how far I can push in character design and world building, and it really helps a lot in creating my OCs be more likeable and relatable (additionally I’ve had one Mary Sue OC in the past and I never even knew about the term till later so I actually decided to avoid bad overpowerfully-character tropes…unless it’s for a joke character XD )

The Sario Effect - Beta Reading Link

Summary: It was supposed to be a normal Saturday afternoon. We deserved a break after everything we’ve been through. Then out of the blue, a kid bumped into us with a strange device. A Yeerk device. And the Yeerks want it back from her. We don’t know what’s going on. What that device is. Or how this Controller is connected to everything. The only thing Rachel, Tobias, Cassie, Ax, Marco and I do know is that she might have the answers we need. And she might actually be more dangerous than Visser Three himself…

Since my note regarding my fanfiction writing, I’ve re-evaluated what I wanted for my story idea: a disabled Host with a Yeerk, and reedited the entire story of the Sario Effect thanks to several peoples’ help. I do wanna give a small apology that “here we go again! Another version of this one fic I’ve made” and honestly, I feel the same as you do. This is like the fifth version and I’ve been pulling my hair wondering why on Earth did I not just make this version from the beginning. 

So considering this has gone through versions, by all means, wreck this piece with all the constructive criticism to the ground. I want your harshest, honest feedback to make up for it. A simpler explanation might be that 1) intersecting beams in space is less likely than it seems, especially when you think about the width of beams relative to the actual size of space etc etc 2) that only high-powered beams have the capability to cause rips so the chances of two intersecting goes down even further 3) that the angle and duration of the intersection matters as well so the odds are even lower. Or something like that.

I like this theory... but the problem is that MM2 also features human weaponry kicking off a sario rip and nesk weaponry collapsing it.  Admittedly these are nuclear fucking bombs that get the rip going, so not the kind of thing you can get at a corner store.  But it still suggests that any explosion of sufficient magnitude — or, I don’t know, weirdness? — will cause timey-wimey shit to go down.  So in the Animorphs ‘verse there are apparently loads of people from Micronesia and Japan and possibly anywhere a sufficiently large volcano has gone off who are just... lost in the timestream.

And unless they figure out another way to set off an equivalently-large explosion (which apparently has the effect of flinging people back into the time they left, if I read MM2 correctly) they’re just... stuck there.  Statistically speaking, before the existence of humanity.  For the rest of their lives.

Jesus, why did I go down this rabbit hole.  The fridge horror is unending.

I'd really like an Animorphs series that had a decent special effects budget that got to be as weird as the books got.

Not, like, Atlantis Taxidermy weird, but more like the Oatmeal book, Sario Rips and "hey we're gonna have a book in the cretaceous because we can and have Ax fight a t.Rex because it's awesome"

Now that we’re on the topic of book to screen adaptations, what book/book series do you guys want to see adapted?

I would kill for The Secret Series book series by Pseudonymous Bosch (aka Raphael Simon) to get a screen adaptation (preferably as a TV show). I just want to see my children Cass, Max-Ernest, and Yo-Yoji on screen.

Growers urge Sindh to revitalise old canals, improve water governance

HYDERABAD: The old irrigation system built in 1932 is no longer suitable in 2017 due to the many changes, both manmade and natural, that have taken place. Hence, it should be revived to address the problems of growers, rural communities, and livestock to maintain the ecosystem.

This came under discussion at a dialogue with Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority (SIDA) and stakeholders on 'Water Management Challenges and Remedies', which attracted leading growers, agriculture extension department officials, researchers, and civil society members.

The programme was organised late Thursday evening by Strengthening Participatory Organisation (SPO). SPO is collaborating with SIDA, growers, relevant government departments and local communities residing on Akram Wah (canal) to improve water distribution system and avoid the loss of soil fertility.

The canal, which was designed and built in 1962 with 4,100 cusecs capacity, travels 80 kilometres from Kotri Barrage to irrigate 0.4 million acres located in Badin district's tail-end area, where the government had leased out pieces of lands to communities five decades ago.

The beneficiaries were brought from different areas to settle them at the new destination, where they established small villages and started cultivating the lands. However, after some years, people with political backing also starting claiming share from Akram Wah in Hyderabad and Tando Muhammad Khan districts.

Though initially there were 137 watercourses registered with the irrigation department on Akram Wah, now hardly 82 watercourses are functional, and the rest neither have proper share nor the government’s attention.

Communities residing on both sides of Akram Wah from Hyderabad, Tando Muhammad Khan, to Badin, are crying for drinking water and also demanding the government to build channels to drain out saline water and save the fertile lands.

Speakers pointed out that the British government, while designing huge irrigation systems had set rules to use 60 percent lands for summer crops and 40 percent for winter crops. This helped maintain soil fertility naturally. “We have violated the set rules and are cultivating the entire land with multiple crops, which has created problems,” they said.

They emphasised on conducting studies on each canal to see possibilities to save lands, lives and livelihoods of communities.

Zahid Bhurgari, representing Sindh Chamber of Agriculture, the major grower body and member Nara Canal Area Water Board, said, “When we say 70 percent of the population is associated with agriculture, we must realise that presently their lives and livelihoods are at risk because of water shortage, unequal water distribution, increasing contamination in water, and carelessness on the side of the government."

He pointed out to the seepage in canals which resulted in mixing saline water and contamination of ponds, hand pumps and wells.

"I have already given a detailed presentation before Sindh chief minister to resolve the issues faced by growers. I can show evidences of manipulation of funds in the name of development and renovation of canals and water systems," Bhurgari said.

Earlier, community women from Hyderabad district expressed concerns over how seepage in canals has destroyed their family lands, effected crop yield, and polluted water sources.

Rizwana Halepoto, a land owner, said, "In monsoon and during winter rainfalls we lose communication with rest of the world, because of standing water all around."

Omar Farooq Chairman Left Bank Canal Area Water Board (Akram Wah and Phuleli canal system) said apart from the local population, at least 20 million livestock also depended on Akram Wah for drinking water.

He said constant neglect of the authorities might cause colossal loss to agriculture and widespread displacement of communities.

Mustafa Baloch, head of SPO Hyderabad region, said they wanted the provincial government to ensure equal water distribution under SIDA Act 1997 and Sindh Water Management Ordinance 2002. He said they were mobilizing tail-end communities, especially women to play a role in decision-making.

He said the consultation of rural farmers must be ensured while designing policies and legislation, giving priority to their suggestions.

He said activation of farmers organisations on canals could bring change and ensure water governance. The SIDA is working on three canals out of the total 14 canals in Sindh. They have formed farmers’ organisations (FOs) to resolve issues on their own while respecting each other to take equal share of water.

Philippe Floch, representing UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) participated as an observer. SIDA managing director Muhammad Khan Nizamani, Abdul Ikhlas of Agriculture Extension Department, Nazir Essani, M Perkash Advocate, peasant rights activist Punhal Sario, Pervez Banbhan and others also spoke on the occasion.

MY TWO OCS from my fic, the Sario Effect: V’trix (Orekor 8517) the Werch, ex-scientist, outcast and El, an Asian-Amercian (part Taiwanese) human girl born with half a brain.

This is a different take unlike my Marco sheet but I decided to not go for clean lineart because that takes too long. X’D For now, sketches are the best!

So few things: They’ve been friends for four years, El earning the title, “x’yta”. Because of El’s disability, V’trix doesn’t have that much control like any Yeerk but the two have cooperated to move as one. Because of this El can overcome difficulties she’s had and V’trix can be her own person rather than have to hide it because of this war. V’trix is known to anyone other than El as a penpal from New Zealand as a coverup and only in secret, do these two talk normally to each other. And that purple Yeerk up there is V’trix.

The idea there is Yeerks used to be colorful, but because of how cramped and unhealthy Yeerk Pools are, the Yeerks have grown dull and green. V’trix’ Werch status has made it that she’s not often allowed to the pools that she’s resorted to illegal methods (her own minor pool called a Compact) thus she’s gained what Yeerks used to look like.

And yes, she’s tiny. BABY LITTLE SQUISHY YEERK! AHAHAHAHAHA! -gets punched by V’trix-
