THE ROSES OF HELIOGABALUS

Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1888)

The painting depicts Roman emperor Elagabalus hosting a banquet. There’s a group of Romans dining, being swamped by pink rose petals falling from above. The young Elagabalus, who is wearing a silk robe and tiara is watching from behind with his guests. He buries his guests in flowers and some of them are smothered to death and are unable to crawl to the top.
