This is really helpful for my fic, thank you! Does anyone know what nicknames were used for Grand Duke Dimitri Pavlovich and Grand Duke Andrei Vladimirovich? By any of the Romanovs or Felix Yusupov, I'm not picky.
If not, going with a common diminutive will probably work well enough. I might find one for Dimitri if I had the energy to read Yusupov's memoir Lost Splendor...
Grand Duke Nicholas Mikhailovich was apparently called Uncle Bimbo. A friend in discord told me it was used by his Romanov family too, but I don't have any other sources.
Oh also I have heard that Felix Yusupov's nickname was Malenkiy, meaning Little One. Though in his memoir it seems to be translated as Baby. The Romanovs and Rasputin called him that too. This letter he ends with "Feli" though

Nicknames of Otma and their nicknames for other people (taken from their correspondence and diaries)

Thor not so subtly about to knock tony out with his hammer so he can keep his poptarts

I know there are only so many ways to phrase the insight "Tsar Nicholas II has no idea what he was doing" in a way that makes it interesting, but I do wonder what the endgame of Nicholas and the reactionaries really was in Russia in the 1900s and 1910s. Let's say he's right about everything: let's say orthodoxy, autocracy, and nationality can work as an ideology, that the Tsarist state isn't a creaking old half-rotted machine that has embarrassingly poor capacity (and stops abruptly above the local level relevant to 75% of the population), let's say all your loyal-but-reformist-ministers like Witte and Stolypin are wrong, conditions are fine, this agitation really is the pernicious influence of foreigners and Jews, and "true Russians" (whatever that means) really do love you.
You still got your ass kicked by the Japanese, you still rule a country which is embarrassingly poor given its size and population, your tiny middle class still has very little capital to invest in industry because all the surplus is getting hoovered up by your nobles and you, personally. Russia, as a military and economic engine to which your family's fortunes are irrevocably yoked (unless you abdicate and go into exile, which we all know you won't), is still well behind other European great powers, and the next big war you fight against a peer nation is going to go even worse than the one with Japan, if it happens in your backyard--which is inevitable, because you are playing great power politics like you are the German Kaiser, and not the Russian Tsar.
So what is your endgame? Stagnate forever? I guess this is demanding too much from a man who genuinely thought God was on his side, who was totally out of touch with the events of the day, and whose interest in the affairs of state far outstripped his understanding of those affairs. But there were a lot of reactionaries in Russia in those days, who seemed to share Nicholas's passion for stasis and autocracy. And no matter how many anti-semitic conspiracies you fund in occupied Poland, it's not gonna keep the Prussians at bay come 1914! And it's not like he didn't have a ton of loyal ministers who were 1000% on board with a strong monarchy and who also had clever ideas on how to improve state capacity and expand industry.

The photos mostly originate from the meetings of the Romanov family with their Hessian relatives: the Tsarina’s brother Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, his wife Grand Duchess Eleonore, and their children, Georg Donatus and Ludwig. Photographs include the family on the Standart yacht, in the Livadia Palace dining hall, and at events greeting the public, from around 1910 to 1912.

Taken pr. 2 | Mom!Natasha Romanoff x fem!reader
Pairings: Natasha x Melina (half family)
Type of fic: Tension
Warnings: None
Parts -> 1 -> 3 -> 4 -> 5 -> 6 -> 7 -> 8 -> 9 -> 10
Summary: After your abduction Natasha is determined to get you back even if it means seeking help from someone she hasn’t been wanting to talk to in years. But for you she’d do anything.
——————————
The cold night air bit at Natasha’s skin as she stood outside Melina’s isolated home, waiting. The phone call had been brief, but Melina owed her, and Natasha was counting on that debt to come through. She knocked twice, the sound sharp against the quiet wilderness.
The door creaked open, and Melina’s sharp gaze met Natasha’s. There was a flicker of surprise in her expression, but she quickly masked it. “Natasha,” she said, stepping aside to let her in.
“Melina,” Natasha replied curtly, wasting no time.
Once inside, Natasha paced the room, the tension rolling off her in waves. Melina watched her carefully, arms crossed. “What’s this about?”
Natasha stopped, taking a deep breath. “Someone close to me was taken.”
Melina raised an eyebrow. “Taken?”
“By the Red Room,” Natasha said bluntly.
That caught Melina’s attention. She straightened, her expression hardening. “And you think I can help?”
“I know you can,” Natasha said, her voice firm. “You still have ties. I need information—anything that can help me find them.”
Melina narrowed her eyes, her mind clearly racing. “Who is this someone?”
Natasha hesitated, her jaw tightening. She had been careful not to mention your name, knowing how many questions it would raise. But as Melina’s expectant gaze bore into her, Natasha realized there was no avoiding it.
“She’s…” Natasha faltered, her voice softer now. “Her name is Y/N Romanoff.”
For the first time in the conversation, Melina’s composed demeanor cracked. “Romanoff?” she repeated, her confusion evident. “Who—”
“It doesn’t matter,” Natasha cut in sharply, her voice firm. “What matters is finding her before it’s too late. Can you help me or not?”
Melina’s brows furrowed, clearly wanting to press further, but she knew better than to argue with Natasha when she was like this. With a small nod, she moved toward her desk, powering up a laptop.
“I still have some access,” Melina admitted, her fingers flying across the keyboard. “Not much, but enough to get into the system.”
Natasha stood behind her, every muscle in her body taut with anticipation as Melina worked. Minutes passed in tense silence, broken only by the occasional tap of keys.
Finally, Melina spoke. “I found her. She’s been registered for Widow training—just starting.”
Natasha’s breath hitched, her stomach twisting. She leaned closer to the screen, her sharp eyes scanning the information Melina pulled up. “Where is she?”
Melina hesitated. “I can give you coordinates, but they’re fragmented. The Red Room doesn’t keep all their information in one place anymore. They’ve learned from the past.”
“Give me what you’ve got,” Natasha demanded.
Melina jotted down a series of coordinates on a scrap of paper, handing it to Natasha. “It’s not much, but it’s a starting point.”
Natasha grabbed the paper, her grip tight. “Thank you,” she said, turning to leave.
“Natasha,” Melina called after her.
Natasha paused, her hand on the door.
“Who is she?” Melina pressed, her tone softer this time.
Natasha didn’t look back. “She’s my daughter,” she said simply before walking out the door.
Hours later, Natasha sat in the dimly lit cabin of a private jet, the coordinates clutched tightly in her hand. The roar of the engines barely registered as she stared out the window, her mind racing with plans, contingencies, and possibilities.
She didn’t know what she’d find when she reached her destination, but one thing was certain—she wasn’t stopping until she brought you home.
No matter what it took.

did y'all know that mikhail romanov, brother of nicholas ii, after revolution complied with bolsheviks and was promised soviet citizenship to live like regular person from then on. when interventionists attacked and overall country's material conditions worsened in 1918 he was relocated from petrograd to perm to stay low but otherwise he was free to move in town as he wished. but among mass hunger triggered by wwi and hatred his ruling family inspired in people he didn't realize he probably shouldn't flaut his riches at such times and continued to live lavishly in the open. so this arrogant dumbass ended up being murdered by a bunch of local workers, lol. play stupid games win stupid prizes.
#liz.txt#he probably would be executed later anyway like all other extended romanov family was after the main lines execution but still lol
