you know i gotta admit i didnt expect stormlight to get more popular. or rather mainstream? as the page count increased
#this is not about my fellow nerds if you were reading 1000 pg books before than nothing was gonna stop you#but like idk i was at a party a few months ago and the series came up as being on a lot of ppl's tbrs who like#arent huge fantasy fans. and i was like hey when i started reading these the only person I knew who also read them was well#related to me.#but i mean ive been saying way of kings is still the best entry level book for non fantasy fans literally since 2018 so yeah#cant really rec the rest of the series bc of the sheer commitment you need to read the greater cosmere#but actually lol then again i know a guy who went into wat completely blind#like ONLY read stormlight and he had a great time but was also aware of how much he was missing

Why is it so difficult to sit down and just read these days? I used to read a book in a single sitting but now it's like I have no attention span.
*opens up a book with an engaging writing style, well-crafted characters, and a decent grasp of pacing*
*proceeds to tear through it*
Ok so maybe it's not entirely a me problem....
#I have been SLOGGING through a book a friend loaned me (like...a year and a half ago...)#she gave me the whole trilogy but I know I'll be lucky to get through book one but I want to try#(after this I'm removing the rest of this writer's stuff from my tbr I can't)#but then I picked up Emily Wilde over the weekend since I ended up with both the printed and audio versions#since I was at home and not work I sat down and read it with no problem#and now I'm poking at a Discworld book and I'm already like a quarter of the way through it#it's both frustrating and a relief lol#in related news I decided to sign up to judge the book contest I've judged the last couple of years#hadn't meant to but they're very short of judges and I got Kenzie to join me#so soon it'll be back to reading...some mediocre writing again#(in fairness this contest did introduce me to a couple of really good writers)#(one of whom has a sequel coming out next month)

weird thing about me is that I am so serious about new year's resolutions that the last week of december feels like I'm in one of those "preparing for war" montages (but in a good way)
#mine are always very easy to complete and i dont kick myself if i miss a day#like last year mine was to watch one new movie a week (bc i never ever watch movies despite wanting to) and i did it! mostly#and my one for this year is in three parts. a) read every day bc i fell out of that habit and even one page counts#b) finish my physical TBR shelf (i think its about 70 books? itll be tough but i think i can do it)#and c) read a nonfiction book at least once a month because as much as i love fiction there are a LOT of nonfics piling up#that i really want to read and i sort of neglect them in favor of my constant escapism. so.#ANYWAY i think about that statistic of how many people fail at their new years resolution and it makes me feel like i have rabies#but like. spite rabies#i made a list of interesting nyrs a few months ago and the amount of articles i had to read by smug wealthy men made me sick in the head#and only achieving my goals out of spite will heal me#anyway follow me on storygraph xoxo (ththalassocracy)#you can watch me in real time as i try once again to read a book popular at the library i work at and get disappointed almost every time#ignore the fact that ive been listening to an audiobook for almost a year now. dont look at me#ahh i love new years though. its such a fresh and clean start#2026 im thinking abt having a new resolution for each month so that i can sort of teach myself how to apply that Fresh Start feeling anytim#so that i dont have to wait for new years bc i have fleeting goals and hobbies all the time and its fun to commit to things#without the horror of failing (or consequences)#also next year i wanted to try my Shower Olympics resolution but that one would NOT last a full year lol#so maybe. but i dont actually want to start planning anything until at least june#AND THIS YEAR I HAVE 6 DAYS OFFFF right at new years!!! so i get to deep clean AND rest AND start off my resolution really strongly#im so fucking excited i might do that every year because the joy i feel at having those days off during new years is incredible

ive never had much meas on trans shapeshifter stories bcos i feel like they lack an internal conflict but one subset that i DO wicked jive with is trans bodyhopper stories. where either on purpose or accident you've ended up in this body you've always dreamed of but it's Stolen, it's Not Yours not because it's dissimilar from your lived reality but because IT IS NOT YOUR BODY and idk i just think it's interesting to see gender euphoria come at the cost of morality but not be invalidated. this trope almost certainly has Implications that i haven't stewed on enough to muddle together
#n also the fact that (in the stuff ive read) the bodyhopper is at the very least sympathetic to the reader#yes i Have read a manga by shuzo oshimi and have others by him on my tbr why do you ask?#but like particularly. im thinking abt this one kh fic centred on the transition from luxu to brain but luxu is transmasc#and it was interestingggggg#also being thought of is a danganfic where the thh cast get bodyswapped as a motive and egg!naegi ends up in celeste's body#and everyone gets swapped back after the trial but makoto's body was killed (with maizono in it)#so she's stuck in celeste's body for (presumably) the rest of her life#and i have a few issues w how it's written but some of the ideas in it r REEEALLY interesting 2 me
