TotK Link

Okay, I know not everyone has played Tears of the Kingdom, nevertheless finished (I know I haven't), but I just have brainrot that I need to spread.

And I now have the platform to do so >:)

So, of course, Spoilers under the cut!

CW: Yandere, TotK spoilers!

・❥・So, this can go two ways. One, TotK Link is Wild who was taken mid-adventure with the other Links. Or, two, this is an entirely different Link, kind of like Calamity (AoC Link-- there are some great headcanons about him -> Here! Go check them out they are so, so good.).

・❥・I like both ideas! But, let's talk about the second option.

・❥・So, imagine, the chain and Reader are coming through a portal to this new Hyrule. Or, well, they think it's new. It's oddly reminiscent of Wild's Hyrule only...bigger. There are islands in the sky, holes covered in what appears to be malice in the ground. People are more abundant, there are towers standing, glowing a welcoming red rather than the golden towers in Wild's Hyrule.

・❥・It's so different, but yet so familiar.

・❥・Now, it's evident that this Link is a little more...Feral. Look at his hair and tell me otherwise, you can't. This man had won. He had won, gotten his victory over the Calamity and was supposed to have the rest of his life to settle down. But he didn't. It was ripped away from him once more. Not only that, but he was thrown back to square one. Gloom now riddled his veins making him feel like he was newborn fawn stumbling out of the Shrine once more. So he's probably livid. Angry with Hylia and fate, and Ganon and and and-

・❥・He has no patience left to offer.

・❥・Zelda was supposed to have unlocked her sealing powers, no? And she did nothing. Actually, that's a lie. She used them to save herself. He was left dying again and she saved herself. After he destroyed the Master Sword, the only thing that made him anyone, protecting her. Destroyed his arm. Destroyed himself. And she saved herself. Rauru had to protect him. Had to save his life before Zelda did.

・❥・So, yeah, he's a little less...companionable. He had to save someone who wouldn't give two shits about him again. He thought they had improved their relationship, but he guesses not. Betrayal runs deep in his gut, igniting a fiery inferno that burns on spite.

・❥・And the worst part about it? Everyone around him is praising that damned Princess. For the bare minimum. Showing them a recipe, building a school that should've been there years ago, hell, even just having a horse got her praise out the ass.

・❥・He was tired of it.

・❥・People stay out of his way a lot more. He wears a look that promises some form of harm should someone cross him, and he's more than willing to deliver. Because now, it's not just the one land of Hyrule. Now he has to deal with the Sky Islands and the Zonai creations. Now he has to deal with the depths and all of those creatures which just bring back the gloom he dispels. And he's so over it.

・❥・Now, picture if you will, Reader falling through the portal, separated from the chain, scared and alone. Reader thinking they're in Wild's Hyrule, but his doesn't quite look like this, does it? Reader thinking that, hey, at least they're hidden and in a forest, only Oh Sweet Goddess Above-- THE TREES ARE MOVING-

・❥・Reader doesn't know what to do because THE TREES ARE COMING AFTER THEM, they were forbidden from having a weapon (Because why would they be separated ever? They were there to protect their sweet reader? why would they need to burden themselves with a weapon when the Links could fight for their honor?), and THE TREES WERE ATTACKING THEM-

・❥・But, here comes their knight in shining armor- or some sort of blue tunic. Honestly, the tunic was styling if we're being honest; the open back and split sides along the hips? (Iykyk)

・❥・The trees are taken care of easily and the blond is turning to look at reader.

・❥・Reader just knows. "...I'm gonna guess your name is Link?"

・❥・And while on the outside, all he gives is a simple nod, it's anything but simple. You, this gorgeous being that he just so happened upon, recognized him. It seemed that without Zelda parading him about like some show dog for all of Hyrule, people didn't know who he was. but you? You did? You knew who he was? And the way you were staring at him was like you knew what he had done. The sacrifices he had given. And you were thankful and appreciative. Which was all he asked for.

・❥・You then thank him (You THANKED him) for saving your life and explain that you had been separated from your group. (Group? You had a group? And they just...let you out of their sight?) He offers to help you look for them and you eagerly accept.

・❥・Now, he latches onto you pretty quickly. Your already used to all the Link-isms so he isn't much different. The silence, the constantly guarded exterior, your used to all of it. And it just convinces him further that you're perfect for him.

・❥・Eventually the rest of the chain do pop up. But this Link isn't convinced their safe, after all, Ganon could make puppets out of everyone. Whose to say their not puppets or Yiga? It's better to stay with him, can't you see that?

・❥・The chain obviously have a different opinion on the matter, Legend all but Demanding you back. Hyrule and Four try to placate this Link, while Wild, Wind and even Twilight are trying to think of way of just scooping you up and running. Sky and Warriors are trying to barter with this Link (What does he want? Fairies? Potions? Money? They could have it all should he just give you back). Time is the only one to recognize that this is still a Link. He still wants what's best for you. That doesn't mean he trusts him.

・❥・If Fierce Deity and First are int he group at this point, they too are probably either trying to manipulate explain to this Link that they are in fact your aforementioned group or are just barely holding onto the shred of sanity left thats stopping them from simply doing away with this obstacle.

・❥・But this Link, like all Links, is stubborn. Not just a regular stubborn either. He has learned the hard way that if he wants something, he's going to have to fucking cling to it to keep it. And he's not losing you. Eventually they explain the situation after a bit of your pestering and he loosens up, just the slightest, to take in their words. That doesn't mean he lets go though. Oh no, he just lets them meander closer without threatening a flame throwing at them.

・❥・He's sort of indifferent to Wild, I would think, since they're kind of the same person. He was just dealt the shittier hand.

・❥・When asked where Zelda is, he simply points up (Maybe her name is Natura? Idk, I'm uncreative). He does not elaborate. They don't ask him to.

・❥・Now, it's obvious you have just claimed this Link. He's yours. Sorry not sorry. It's just a matter of taking him with you. He's insistent on not leaving your side. The Demon King isn't actually doing anything, other than unleash monsters the people of his land are already familiar with. This is obviously a new threat and he's a Link isn't he?

・❥・In terms of names? Maybe he's the hero of the Zonai because Tears of the Kingdom doesn't really give us much to work with. Maybe they call him both Zonai and Sage. I like Sage, so I'm going with that.

・❥・The way he fights is fast and brutal, delivering hits that dissipate his enemies own mobility before delivering a fatal last hit. He's a unit of a man, probably like Twilight, if not a little smaller. (Have you seen the shit he has to lug around? Mans is built.) Same height as Wild though, just more built.

・❥・As for the type of Yandere he is? He's on you. Constantly. He is hovering over you because anything and everything can be ripped away from him in an instant, as Hylia as so helpfully shown. He is making sure nothing gets the chance to get closer to you. And he's using his new abilities to do so. Wild is probably interested in the abilities and the arm and the tech, since his Hyrule, after Sage's, is the most technologically advanced.

・❥・He's inspecting your food, checking your person every time you disappear out of his sight for a second, snarling at people who attempt to talk to you.

・❥・The group have to keep him in check like an untrained puppy.

・❥・Oh, but how he laps up the attention Reader bestows upon him. He is such a cuddle hog and he knows it, smirking smugly at the others while you hold him close because oh how his arm hurts so badly, didn't you know? Oh, how the gloom has him feeling absolutely rotten, please can he just lay with you for a while? Just until he settles back once more? Pretty please?

Anyway, those are my thoughts for now, feel free to add your own!

okay okay okay, so! I will (until someone comes for me, but no one will ‘cuz y’all are cowards, I say, knowing my childhood nostalgia is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in my affection for Next Mutation but also i love camp) acknowledge and self-impose the title of Next Mutation trash lover as a disclaimer for why I’m gonna do another quick run down of Venus’ origin again. but a quick skim because a bitch is losing against her insomnia demon rn. 

now, a lot of the kids know that Venus = magic, in general. however, at least to me, intentionally or not Venus was more portrayed like a daoist... ‘magician’ of sorts, but less in a real world daoist sense and more of a cultivator in the xianxia genre sort of way. granted she wears the taijitu (yin yang symbol) and literally showed the boys her box of herbal medicine (and one dessicated vampire heart lololol). and now that I mentioned all of that, I can segue into why I gave her “White Snake” as a code name-- in that I chose it after Bai Suzhen/Bai Shejing which now that my insomnia riddled mind  is typing it out... my reasoning is actually pretty shallow, they both cultivate technically speaking, both work with herbal medicine and they just wanna help people. also just ‘cuz IDW has Venus wearing white now.

Finding Her - Chapter 19

Link makes notes, takes photos and keeps time on his quest across Hyrule, in the hopes of finding Zelda and staying sane until he does. [ Previous | Next | First | AO3 ]

Log date: 17:35. 9th month, 18th day 104AC Location: Lookout Landing, Emergency Shelter  Weather: Overcast, drizzle 

Arm hurts, really hurts. A Yiga got me there. In a bad way, but getting better. 

Don’t know where to start or where to end. It’s Autumn already, but it was Summer yesterday. Talk of a Blood Moon soon. Or did that already happen? Head’s swimming. Losing my grip a little and then suddenly I’m

Upstairs, in the loft, dozing. Zelda’s downstairs. Where’s the flour? she asks, I want to bake something. It’s been over a hundred years! So we try but I’m a better cook than a baker and she’s a culinary mad scientist. No measuring cups, no recipes, just vibes. We’re sitting on the floor waiting for the cake to bake, flour everywhere, and then she’s on my lap, then her lips are on mine, then her apron is gone along with the rest of our clothes, and when I wake up in bed next to her, there’s still flour in her hair. 

Was that yesterday or the day before? Trying to hold on. Time flowing through me like air out a window. If I reach out I can catch moments in my palm: Standing with Scorpis under a sunshade, waiting for the rain to pass. He’s telling me it’s a family legend that his great-grandfather was a Knight, like me. Then I’m with Jerrin, getting my bandages changed. She says it’s a miracle I survived, or perhaps the Goddess’ idea of a joke. Then Muzu is insisting we train the soldiers harder, but Slergo and Offrak say people are already working their guts off. Gralens hands me the latest edition of the Lucky Clover Gazette. Buliara and Harth take inventory of my gear and weapons. Mubs reads me a letter from Garini, who says hi. 

I’m here. I’m trying to be here. They’re saying the Sages are on their way to Lookout Landing. They say victory is near. But all I wanted was her, and that future only half-dreamed. The one where we have a house on a hill and it’s being renovated to add a library. Zelda’s downstairs, reviewing the plans over a cup of tea, and I’m upstairs, in the loft, checking on the baby. He was a winter-born child, like me, so he’s strong. There’s a cake in the oven. And it’s a good one.

Log date: 19:34. 9th month, 21st day 104AC Location: Passeri Greenbelt, Hyrule Field   Weather: Partly cloudy 

Cool morning. Trees are going red now. Rode out with the Monster Control Crew at noon. There’s a camp nearby that they hit once every few weeks, but each time it gets rebuilt a little closer to Lookout Landing. We prayed at the Goddess Statue before we left. Paya is here now, leading the services. As the hours tick down, all round the clock, people pray. 

The Sages arrived two days ago. Impa and Robbie not long after that. Here to give every last Message Medallion a service, Robbie said, while Impa handed Josha a stack of ancient texts to translate. Then, an emergency meeting with the Sages. They’re fidgeting, they’ve heard the rumours. Purah starts saying something but I stop her. They won’t believe the truth from anyone but me. Don’t know what I said, only that I tried to think of how Zelda would tell them, if she were in my place. 

Felt like all hell broke loose after. Gasps, cries, bowed heads, furious tears and vows of vengeance. All that anger and grief is a torch to a powder keg. Suddenly Purah is saying we march at dawn, tomorrow we avenge our Princess and destroy the Demon King! And I’m standing there unable to breathe because I realise I'm not ready. I can’t face him yet and I don’t know why. And I’m trying to think of how to say that without freaking everyone out, because your hero isn’t exactly meant to have second thoughts… when it’s Josha who saves me one final time. 

‘You can’t go!’ she cries. She grabs some ancient book and flips through the pages, pointing to what looks like a lunar chart, with a bright red circle at its centre. ‘There is a Blood Moon tomorrow! If it happens while you’re down in the Depths, it could be a disaster!’ 

More whispers. A bit of back and forth. Purah brushes her off as paranoid, but then the Sheikah gather around a couple calendars and do a few calculations, and in the end, the attack is called off. 

So Ganondorf got himself another day, and so did I. Can’t delay forever but… there’s just something not settled in me yet. When we win this, everyone else’s lives go back to normal. 

But what about mine?

Log date: 10:00. 9th month, 22nd day 104AC Location: Sanidin Park Ruins, Hyrule Ridge Weather: Fine 

They’ll have realised I left by now. I put a note on my pillow promising to come back by sun-down. Have to keep moving in case they send scouts after me. 

Not abandoning them. Would never dream of it. But I promised myself to chase every lead and this last one is for me. 

Read through the Lucky Clover Gazette this morning and a headline on page 8 caught my eye. WINGED WRITER HANGS UP HIS FLYING GOGGLES. Penn? He’s leaving the Gazette? He told me that Traysi loved his work. I have a great all-weather climbing set to show for it. 

Might be stalling. Might not. Just want to figure this one out. Penn was looking for Zelda too, after all. And maybe searching for something else along the way – a reason to wake up each morning, get back on the trail, and soar long… 

He deserves to know what happened, or at least for someone to thank him for his hard work. Or maybe I just want to see a friendly face, before the end of it all.

Log date: 15:50. 9th month, 22nd day 104AC Location: Great Sky Island, Central Hyrule Archipelago  Weather: Clear

I found Penn on Washa’s Bluff, in a gazebo where an old friend and I sat once. Kass would sing until the sun went down, and as thanks I’d make us both dinner. His songs still carry on the wind if you know how to listen. They’re the songs of the land, after all. 

We talked for a long time. I told Penn we made a great team, that his leads were invaluable, and that chasing them down kept me on my toes. Sure, we didn’t find Zelda, but we told the stories of her people and should be proud of that. He said he’s still leaving the paper no matter my flattery. Spoke about having lost his touch, that his instincts were gone. A reporter without instincts is like a Knight without a sword. It didn’t help when he noticed that I did, in fact, have my sword back. 

‘Don’t worry about me, partner,’ Penn said. ‘I’ll get back in the air, someday.’

But I was worried. I didn’t want Penn to lose hope… I didn’t want to lose hope. And in that moment, it felt like waking up. Like surfacing from beneath deep waters. I wanted to be alive. I wanted to live a good life. I knew I still did, even without her, even with all the pain.

So I said to him that maybe wanting to be better is its own instinct. Maybe trying to find something or someone or some meaning to it all is what keeps us going. And maybe we don’t have to do any of that alone. Penn sat with that for a long time, and then pulled out his notebook.

‘Would you want to write a column for the Gazette?’ he asked. ‘Our readers would love it. I’ll edit it, of course.’ How could I say no? We shook on it then and there. So much for his sabbatical.

It’s nearly time. I bid Penn farewell, then came here. Wondered — if I could choose how to spend one last afternoon, what would I do? The answer was easy, though it took a little while to coax Zelda to join me. But now we’re here and we’re ready: for a nap, with the sun on our backs, and nothing else but us and the quiet moments we can still share. 

I miss you, Zelda, even though you’re right here. I miss you more than I could ever say. But I’m going to keep on living. I’m going to live enough life for the both of us. I think it’s what you might have wanted. 

If nothing else, I consider it a duty. What is a Knight, if not a devotee to his lady?

The Dionysos gallery (3)

We continue our journey down the gallery put together by the Museum of Wine to explore the depictions of Dionysos and his cohorts through the art... Previous item of the gallery was here. Today... Dionysos' entourage. And we begin with...

The Triumphal Cortege of Dionysos, by Maerten van Heemskerck

A) The Procession of Dionysos

(As usual all text here is loosely translated from the website)

The motif of the Procession of Dionysos, or Cortege of Bacchus, tends to be heavily inspired by Ovid's description of this triumphal parade within his Metamorphoses - but it is the culmination of Dionysos' entire earthly life.

To shield baby Dionysos from Hera's wrath, Zeus took him far away from Greece, into the land of Nisa, where he was entrusted to nymphs that raised him. Once adult, Dionysos discovered the grapevine and how to make wine. But Hera struck him with madness, and he wandered throughout Egypt and Syria, before finally reaching Phrygia where the goddess Cybele welcomed him, healed him, purified him and initiated him to her mystery cult. Now sane, he returned to Thrace where the ruling king, Lycurgus, proved himself hostile to the young man and tried to imprison him. Dionysos escaped Lycurgus by fleeing to the Nereid Thetis who welcomed him under the sea. But Lycurgus captured the Bacchants that were with Dionysos - before the god rescued them and struck Lycurgus with madness, making him cut his own leg and kill his son with an axe as he believed he was cutting Dionysos' plant, the grapevine. When Lycurgus regained his sanity, the land was cursed with sterility and the oracle announced only the king's death would return fertility to the soil: he was torn apart by four horses.

Dionysos then left Thrace to go to India. With a magical and supernatural army, he managed to wage war and conquer the land - and this is where the "triumphal procession" motif comes from, as he paraded in a (typically Roman way, since Ovid was the source of descriptions) chariot in a chariot pulled by panthers, decorated with ivy and vine, and followed by Silenos, satyrs, centaurs and Maenads.

Here, Bacchus' chariot is a large barrel of wine pulled by two angry panthers. The cohorts of Dionysos are joyful and merry, drinking a lot of wine - but a few details have to be caught. To the right, there is a satyr vomitting. Behind him, there is a knight all in armor, and a sick old man visibly suffering from the gout. The painter was thus trying to warn the audience about the negative consequences of alcohol abuse: near Bacchus' procession, war and disease lurk.

This painting depicts Dionysos' triumphal return after his victories in India. At the bottom right you can see a river-god: he symbolizes the river Indus, and by extension the entire Indian subcontinent. The Oriental nature of the journey is also shown by how a Maenad riding a horse is wearing a leopard's skin. Silenos has a vine in his hand, and while Bacchus holds a thyrsus, his traditional attribute, all the other symbols are however typical of a Roman general and of the "triumphs" of the military of Ancient Rome - for example the red cloak typical of triumphing Roman generals and Roman emperors.

B) Silenos

Silenos is both the teacher and adoptive father of Dionysos, and as such he follows him everywhere. But Silenos is also the personifiction of Drunkenness, and as such he is at the same level as the other minor deities present in Dionysos' parade, such as Comos (merriment/festivity) or Coros (Satiety). From Renaissance onward Silenos became a recurring pictural motif. Tradition depicts him as a joyful and pot-bellied old man, as ugly as he is lustful, his drunk state making him grotesque. "Silenus" also became a generic term to designate an old or elderly satyr.

The Misadventures of Silenus, by Piero di Cosimo

In this painting, Silenos actually appears three times. In chronological order, we first see him at the center of the picture. hile still riding his donkey, he tries to get honey from a hive in a hollow tree, only to be attacked by the bees. On the left we can see him being healed with berry juice, while on the right people are trying to put him back onto his feet.

Here Silenos appears as an obese human. The one that holds his head is his father, the god Pan.

C) Satyrs

The satyrs are ambiguous creatures, half-goat half-man, who lived in the wilderness. Associated with the Maenads, they formed together the "Dionysian cortege" that paraded with the god. They are also associated with the god Pan. They are frequently hanging out or flirting with nymphs, minor deities renowned for their youth and beauty. Nymphs are female spirits that inhabit most places within the landscapes: they are found within woods and forests, in valleys and meadows, by streams and rivers, in mountains and grottos... They are also typically associated with various major deities - including Dionysos.

D) Maenads and Bacchants

The Maenads are the female followers of Dionysos, who escort him in all of his adventures, including his journey to India. They are his servants, not his priestesses, but they do have an important role in his religion and in his worship. They participate to all the mysteries and all the festivals in honor of the god. They are dressed with lion skins, their chest bare, and they hold the thyrsus, a lance surrounded by ivy. They personify the orgiastic spirits of nature, and are renowned for their frenetical dances that place them in a mystical ecstasy. Some heroes fell victim to their inhuman strength - the Bacchants (Roman name of the Maenads) were known to act like ferocious and savage beasts.

E) Centaurs

The centaurs are creatures appearing as half-men half-horses. They are part of the Dionysian procession, and for the Ancient Greek they symbolized all of the bestial appetites (drunkenness and lechery). Their fight against the Lapiths was an allegory for the fight between civilization and savagery.

These three paintings depict the same legend. Pirithoos married Hippodamia and invited all the Olympian gods to his wedding. However, since there were most guests than the palace could contain, Pirithoos had to place several of them within a cavern nearby - a fresh and shadowy, very pleasant grotto. Within this cavern were Nestor, Caeneus and several Thessalian princes, alongside Pirithoos' cousin the Centaurs. The Centaurs were not used to drinking wine. Upon sensing its smell, they rejected the fermented milk they had been offered, and swallowed all the wine. But in their ignorance, they took the wine without cutting it with water as it was tradition - as such, they took pure alcohol, and became so drunk that when the bride arrived with her handmaidens to salute them, a centaur named Eurytion broke all the furniture and took her by the hair to drag her away. All the other Centaurs imitated him, snatching away all the women and girls (and young boys) they could find, and trying to rape them all. Pirithoos, with the help of Theseus, went to rescue Hippodamia - he cut off Eurytion's nose and ears and, with the help of the other Lapiths, he threw the mutilated Centaur outside of the grotto.

A battle ensued that lasted all night, and during which Caeneus the Lapith was killed. This was the start of a very long war that would forever oppose the Centaurs and their neighbors the Lapiths.

André Lhote's "Bacchant"

The character of the Bacchant reappeared within the art of the 19th century, all the way to the beginning of the 20th. Originally, the Bacchant attracted the artists in its role of member of the procession of Bacchus, the thiasis - the Bacchant (or Maenad) is primarily the priestess of Bacchus/Dionysos, and has specific attributes: a skin belonging to a wild animal (usually a panther), a cup of wine, a crown of ivy or vine, a thyrsus... But the Bacchant of the 19th century, entirely devoted to the service of the god of wine, becomes a being of flesh. She listens and obeys to her impulses, she shows a savage sensuality, she offers to the artists the possibility to depict an ecstatic, equivocal nudity - not to say licentious. Slowly, painters and sculptors will use the myth as an excuse to depict the eroticism of a body arching and rearing. The bacchant loses her mythological attributes, and becomes simply a naked woman, free from all constraints. However, the idea of drunkenness and sensuality is well-kept.

The Bacchant of André Lhote is an exemple of this new Bacchant: she is a naked and fleshy woman with generous curves. In a posture of lascivity and complete abandon, she eats grapes in honor of Bacchus within a rural landscape. She celebrates the sensuality of the pleasures of life. Rodin created on the same motif erotic drawings that he called "Bacchant". Indeed, to call a naked, sexual model a "Bacchant" was a way to avoid the fury of the numerous "Leagues of Virtue". This results in the ambiguity of the title, since the modern Bacchant is very different from her Antic sister, even though they are united by the presence of wine and grapes.

MASTER HAND: Next, the flightless angel that serves as “The Captain of the Goddess of Light’s Guard”, having taken down entire armies, as well as several gods, a crew of space pirates, an alien race, and the embodiment of chaos itself. Meet number 28, Pit!

MASTER HAND: The next fighter is the galaxy’s most feared bounty hunter. Oh, you’ve already been introduced to this one. Well, what if she didn’t have her Power Suit? You get “The Warrior Within”, number 29, Zero Suit Samus!

MASTER HAND: Next is the self-proclaimed king of Dream Land, a greedy and gluttonous penguin, but has helped Kirby save Dream Land many times against many powerful foes. He is “The Self-Made King”, number 39, King Dedede!

MASTER HAND: Next is the metafictional savior of the Nintendo Entertainment System, and possibly video games in general, helped the Nintendo Entertainment System get off the ground during the tail end of The Great Video Game Crash of 1983. He is “The Last of his Kind”, number 42, R.O.B.!

CRAZY HAND: While he initially debuted as a toy as his full name, the Robotic Operating Buddy, in 1985, his first in-game appearance is “Stack-Up” for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

MASTER HAND: Next is the Hero of Hyrule taking a cartoony look and hailing from Outset Island, a small location on the Great Sea, and set out on a quest to rescue his sister Aryll from the clutches of the Helmaroc King. Welcome “The Wind-Waking Warrior”, number 43, Toon Link!

CRAZY HAND: While the “Toon” design for Link technically appeared first in “The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords”, the character here unambiguously represents the character debuting in “The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker” for the Nintendo GameCube.

MASTER HAND: Next, Fox’s rival and the leader of the bounty hunter force known as Star Wolf, “The Silver Space Wolf”, number 44, Wolf O’Donnell!

Slave Knight Gael as a Fate Servant

Backstory:

Gael was only in the Throne of Heroes for a moment. His deeds never recorded, his victories awarded to his owners, all in a time forgotten by most of the gods. A slave knight, fodder for the battlefield. His red hood, the only reward for his service, was gifted to him by fellow slaves in gratitude for their lives he had saved. So he died a hero, leading a rebellion of slaves, and for the briefest of moments was a Servant. But he faded from the Throne of Heroes as quickly as he died, for his old hateful masters wiped away all that spoke his name.

And so he fell into the embrace of the Painted Goddess. As all forgotten heroes do. It is not know what connection this deity has to the Throne of Heroes, that simply a servant that loses their place in the Throne of Heroes finds themself in her realm. A cold place that welcomes those lost to the uncaring march of time or the malicious actions of the living. Living a life of servitude, it was the only way Gael knew how to repay the Painted Goddess for this place of acceptance and entered her service.

Over uncountable time he served, keeping the peace of this gentle realm. There were many of the Forgotten spiteful of what had happened to them. Jealous of those remembered, bitterly clinging to past glory, or hateful of humanity that had erased them. And when they sought to inflict their envy, spite, and anger upon others, they would soon face him.

One would think this a one sided fight, a simple slave knight against the greatest and worst humanity had forgotten. But their avarice waned against his will. Pride shattered by his duty. Fury snuffed out by his persistence. He had made an oath to the Painted Goddess and nothing would break it.

One day, the Painted Goddess brought a strange girl to the realm. All knew she was different. And almost all the Forgotten servants. When they looked upon her, they were reminded of what had been lost. Their place in history. She was Remembered. They could all feel she had some place in the Throne of Heroes. She was the daughter of the Painted Goddess, the Painter. She entrusted her to Gael and weeped, knowing why her daughter was remember by the Throne of Heroes.

Gael did his best to raise the child, protect her from those that sought her harm, make her feel safe and welcome in a place she did not belong in. Against his protests, she would call him Uncle Gael and so a bond of family was forged over time. A bond he had not had in many, many years. Not since he was alive. Not since he had received his red hood. A bond that could challenge his oath.

Sometime later, the child learned of the Holy Grail and sought it out. She wished to use it to make a new world, where no one had to be forgotten. While she could leave easily, Gael could not. He was Forgotten, so he was bound to the Painted Goddess's realm. To overcome this, the Painter preformed a ritual. She somehow sacrificed her place in the Throne of Heroes and placed Gael in her stead.

After coming to an understanding the Master of Chaldea, the Painter left believing they would make a better world for those remembered and forgotten. She would request Gael aid Chaldea, and so he joined the organization. However, even though he is a Servant, the Command Seal has no power over him. He is only loyal to Chaldea till the Painter says otherwise.

Class: Berserker

Abilities:

Noble Phantasm: The Oldest Sword. Gael's blade has no storied history, no grand origins. It was always a crude slave sword, and any deeds committed were never recorded. But there is one fact the echoes through Chaldea and the Throne of Heroes. One truth that can grant it power. No other weapon is older. And Gael can strike with that weight of time. Effect: Damages enemy and times out all Buffs, Debuffs, and DOTs on the target. All remaining damage in DOTs is added to Gael's attack.

The Forgotten's Blessing: Even though Gael has been granted remembrance through the Throne of Heroes, it is merely borrowed and his status as Forgotten still clings to him. He can use this to make people temporarily forget he is there. Effect: An autododge or makes him unable to be targetable for a turn.

The Forgotten's Curses: Many have been forgotten, and Gael carries their hate for those that are remembered in his cloak. Their hateful faces can sometimes be seen in the folds of it, trying to break free and strike. Effect: A multi hit (maybe multi target) attack. Deals bonus damage to Servants.

Favoured Drink: Gael carries a yellow flask on his belt. The elixir inside is quite rejuvenating and those that have tried it say it tastes like warm sunlight. Effect: Self Heal.

This is the Buddy for March 25th. It's Surfing Buddy.

Everyone knows our friend the Silver Surfer. That's a fun character, and a Jack Kirby creation on top of that. It seems like Silver Surfer was a character close to Jack's heart, and a beloved design all around.

Kirby tried to reinvent the character with no success a few times, too.

First, with Orion, of the New Gods, and his astral-glider thing. That's an interesting character, and I quite like his mode of transportation gizmo, but he was never that popular. In fact, he turned out to be something of an appendix in the DC universe. His father, Darkseid, is this big powerful villain who can trash Superman around, but Orion himself is there in the corner, despite all the prophecies that say he'll be the one to beat Darkseid. It's like if Luke Skywalker ended up being a forgotten character and we saw the final battle between Darth Vader and Lando Calrissian.

Then, there was the Black Racer. Everything about that character screams badass. An avatar of death, a Vietnam war vet trapped in a coma, coming out to collect souls, a superhero grim reaper. But, the design, woof. One of the worst, if not the worst, designs Jack Kirby ever did. Red and blue tights, a yellow collared cape, and a cartoonish knight's helmet. If that wasn't bad enough, he's got flying skis.

I know the norse goddess Skädi would use skis, so that might've been an inspiration, but skiing will never be as badass as surfing, I'm sorry. And it doesn't really match a character that's supposed to represent the ultimate fear.

DC comics have tried its hardest to make the Black Racer look cooler. He's supposed to be an important character on par with Darkseid himself, but he's always felt like a cut-rate Silver surfer. They tried making his skiing poles look like scythes, make his costume all black, turned the skis into alien looking animal paws...

A lot of people who don't know better assume the Black Racer wasn't created by the same guy who created Silver Surfer. It does look like a ripoff, after all.

There were some other Silver Surfer-ish characters in Kirby's later work, in Captain Victory and Phantom Force, but those are way too obscure to be remembered.

HSH Febuwhump Day 23 - “You’ll Have to go Through Me”

Continuation of Days 8 & 9 & 21

The figure is imposing. Draped in simple black waist garb, the man’s fiery red hair and eyes stand out, nearly glow in the dark of the cavern. He’s tall and broad, made of pure muscle. His arms and chest are covered in black ink made to look like dragon scales, and his nails are sharpened into wicked points. An ‘x’ shaped scar covers his forehead and his face is twisted into blatantly cruelty and hatred. He holds a massive great sword in one hand, displaying his pure power.

Sky doesn’t feel an ounce of fear. 

The knight raises his own blade, his personal sword that he helped craft and forge, and meets the man’s heated stare with an equally icy glare. 

Behind the man, the bodies of his men are strewn along the floor, having been killed in their sleep. 

Between them, Ghirahims fresh corpse lay cooling. 

Behind Sky, Sun cradles her broken hand to her chest, watching the two stand off. 

“So… you would stand before obliteration to defend your Goddess?” The man’s voice was timeless, neither young nor old. But it was strong and deep and echoed off the walls of the stone chamber. 

“How interesting.” The man mused, lips curling up at the edges. He’s amused at the guardsman’s unwavering stare. Not many can meet his eyes without flinching. “The last chosen heroes I faced were nothing more than sniveling, cowardly worms who tucked tail and ran at the mere sight of me. They were hardly worth even chasing down.”

The man examined his blade, seemingly captivated with the obsidian-black metal. “I had thought back then that the Goddess had chosen her protectors poorly.”

His eyes raise to the princesses, gaze burning. “But it was I who had chosen poorly. The woman I killed was not the one who holds the Goddesses soul. She was nothing more than the bearer of the true Goddess.”

Sky hears Sun inhale sharply behind him. Not in fear. Anger. 

The man points his sword at her, eyes glittering. “It’s you. Finally, Hylia Incarnate, we meet! How I’ve waited for this day! I thought it would be another rotation before we clashed, but what is a single day when I can feel my destiny before me? Quake in fear, little Goddess, as you stand before Demise!”

He laughed, all delight and anticipation. He bore his teeth savagely, a deep hunger clear on his face. Animalistic in his blatant desire. “I shall take your soul for sustenance and ascend tonight! Your power will be mine!“

“The hell you will!” Sky snarled, blade raised. “You’ll have to go through me!”

Demise grinned. “Of course, hero. There would be no victory if I don’t first tear the meat off your bones. As is foretold, the path to eradication of this pathetic world is through the broken bodies of the Goddess and her chosen one. Only after they lay dead at my feet will I finally gain the power to reshape the world into my vision.”

The man flourished his blade, showing off the clear skill he possessed. With one vicious slice, Demise severed the body of his underling in half. He kicked Ghirahim's pieces to the side, clearing the main floor of the circular room. Sun gasped when the top half of Ghirahim's body flew to the side of her, splattering both her and Sky in his blood. His bottom half went the other way, rolling down a small stone slope with legs twisted limply. 

Sky didn’t blink or flinch. He just held his sword at the ready. He was not feeling the exhaustion of the days of searching, nor the pain of injuries from his fight with the Demon Lord just minutes prior. He only felt Sun’s eyes on his back, her anxious gaze tracing the tears in his armor and the blood staining through his uniform.

He felt her fear for him.

But also her trust.

He tightened his grip on his blade. He would not fail her again.

“Make this interesting for me, Hero.” Demise rumbled, taking his stance. “And know that when you fall, everyone and everything you love falls with you.”

Skyward Sword, my beloved

Clearly Sky did something to be worthy of his title as “Godslayer” and this is my version of it. Sun in HSH is the leader of the church and some people think she’s the actual incarnate of Hylia. So I took Demise and made him into some insane religious figure who believes that he’s the incarnate of the Demon God, who needs to absorb Sun’s soul to properly ascend. Thus, when Sky kills him he’d be known as Godslayer.

Also i threw in that “Demise killed the last queen” to give a lil weight to his threat level.
