When did you realize you felt differently about love than what people expected of you?

Oh god uhm... I didn't think I could for awhile. While I was Author actually, uhm...

Hooo, okay. Uhm. When I was the Author. I thought myself incapable of love at all. I had accepted that- it was a whole... thing. About him. But becoming the Host, I simply started to think I wasn't worthy of it. The one... singular shift was Mal. Before and after I became Host. I knew him as the Author for awhile, and sometimes I think Mal could have actually changed him, if he had only had more of a chance to.

I see why you needed a second, Quill, damn.

Hah- Yeah uhm... When I finally started letting myself feel things like that again, I never really thought about it being weird, not caring what gender the person I would maybe end up with would be. Besides- it had always been Mal. Always.

When did you realize you weren't the gender you were assigned at birth?

Oh very very early on. I was quite young- the Jims were easy help in that. I was... god I can't remember, it was so long ago now. I was ten I think. Don't quote me on that.

How long ago would that be for you now?

Oh easily 100 years now. I'm old as fuck.

How do you feel about coming out so publicly, through a TV interview?

I don't mind it honestly- I talk often upon my experiences as trans on the radio show, so it's not like it's unknown in our fan base. If it is... how did you miss it? I'm not subtle. There's an entire episode from last year's pride where I went in depth on my transition journey and what my plan was.

Have you made any special bonds with other LGBTQIA+ members of the production team?

Absolutely! I'm married, for one, I got my siblings back, I have Zaza now... It's a lot, and it's all through the studio and Dark... I was given this chance again, and I love them all. Every single one of them are important to me, and I'm so happy to be here.

Is there anything you'd like to say to any LGBTQIA+ viewers watching this?

If what you think you are changes- that is perfectly fine. I thought I was aroace for genuinely years. Clearly, I was wrong. Or, rather, I wasn't wrong, but it just stopped being right. Scary, yes, but it will be okay. CJ will probably have more on this once you guys get to doing your own.

Knife of Dreams new reader thoughts: Chapters 16-20

Overall thoughts followed by favorite moment except the first two chapters were too boring to have a favorite moment.

Chapter 16 (The New Follower): Real talk I almost fell asleep reading this chapter and the next one. I was listening to the audiobook and absorbed maybe 50% so I had to reread 💀 I'm sorry Elayne but your plot is really boring right now.

Chapter 17 (A Bronze Bear): There are TOO MANY FUCKING NAMES in this chapter sorry I DO NOT CARE! Forgor immediately. I do think Arymilla not getting Nasin's support in writing is going to bite her in the ass.

Chapter 18 (News for the Dragon): I forgot the news already so I guess it wasn't very exciting. I'm happy to see Cadsuane again. Less happy about all the alliances being made with the Seanchan but I understand the logic behind the strategy to ally with them until the Last Battle. I don't like it but I understand it.

Chapter 19 (Vows): Listen I usually love romantic plotlines but the Loial/Erith relationship just doesn't do it for me. I was 0% invested. Second half of this chapter with the Trolloc attack was really good, very tense with LTT taking over and going to town on a hundred thousand Trollocs holy shit. Maybe we should have let this guy take the wheel earlier. He and Rand have a tentative balance/suicide pact now so that's... good?

Chapter 20 (The Golden Crane): When I saw this chapter title, I assumed it would be the "Will he ride alone?" Lan moment I've seen quoted a million times but I didn't know the specifics. I was correct but wow this was a weird situation. Nynaeve's like "hey suicidal husband would you like to go on a suicide mission" and when he says yes, dumps him on the opposite side of the continent. It annoyed me that Nynaeve isn't accompanying him because protecting Alivia from Rand feels like... not the most useful thing she could be doing, but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense for Nynaeve "I hate Aes Sedai" "I need to protect my loved ones" al'Meara.

If you follow this blog I HOPE you know how attached I am to Lan, and clearly this is a big turning point for him and I'm emotional about it. I feel like a lot of this plotline is going to be off page though since we don't have POVs from him and I am not getting my hopes up after the way RJ has treated him for the last however many books, but I'm excited he finally has something to do in the story that isn't just "be depressed in the background and be Nynaeve's husband."

Also while I'm being emotional about blorbos we got a Moiraine mention in this chapter from Lan. [starts crying] He said she used to get headaches when she channeled too much. I'm unwell. I MISS THEM I MISS THEIR BOND I WANT THEM BACK.

There is a yellow meter above Silly’s head at all times. It slowly fills up throughout the round. With an empty panic meter, Gwen’s base/sprint speed and stamina are 10/21 and 120. At a full panic meter, these stats become 15/27 and 80. This is why aer speed and stamina are like that on the stat thing above.

Gwen can summon a shield. The shield’s properties depends on how high or low the panic meter is. If the meter is low, they get a small shield that materializes in front of them. The shield may be small, but it is pretty durable, having 75 health (if a killer dealt 25 damage per hit, only 3 hits until the shield breaks). If the panic meter is high, a large bubble shield forms around them, pushing away anyone near and stunning them for 0.5 seconds. However, one strong hit will easily break the force field.

Supplies — 25 sec cooldown

Gwen can throw whatever item is on hand at the killer, stunning them for 1 second and dealing 5 damage. Whether it disappears or becomes unusable upon using the ability depends on the item. A cola? It stays. You can simply retrieve it after. A medkit? Yeah, no, because I’m evil, the medkit breaks and you can’t retrieve it after using this ability. I might change this but ehhhhhhhh.

Gwen can ‘encourage’ the others, the encouragement varying based on how panicked she is. On below 50% panic, they can boost others’ speed by 4% and give them 15 more stamina. But on more than 50%, ae quickly yell out to them, only giving 9 stamina, but giving 8.5% more speed.

ngl i think that if steve cobs had a tragic backstory it could've made ii so much better. i'm not saying he should be redeemed, i'm saying that among the sea of frenetic antithetic little iconoclasts, having one just straight-up be irredeemable would be nice to see. a tragic backstory is meant to make the audience sympathise with a character and possibly even justify everything that character does. but with cobs? hell nah, there is NOTHING justifiable about him. he is a shitty person on countless levels, he refuses to change, and giving him a sob story would give his character a moral for the audience: that it doesn't matter what someone's past is, if they refuse to change and continue to be shitty without even apologizing then they're a shit person.

if cobs had a tragic origin or something, it could also highlight the differences between (possibly) being a narcissist (taco, someone who COULD'VE been a shit person but she realized she was hurting the people around her and wanted to change) and just being a shit person (cobs) (also i know a lot of people dislike AE for how they treated gender and disability rep in the past, and this could be another way of them showing "we've changed from when we were 14")

also yes i do believe taco is a narcissist, not because "guys she's evil" but because my god does she have an inferiority complex and a black-and-white view of things not to mention this quote from mic: "you don't say sorry to make it better, you say sorry because it's the right thing to do." also because she is relatable as hell

number one. koh ae ri from the eighth sense

she is for real one of my favourite secondary characters of all time. she is so funny and i absolutely love the way she teases her friends, bullying IS a love language yes. i also love how confident and slightly over-the-top she is, she can really stand up for herself and other people as well, which is an admirable quality. also, i am side-eyeing her and her bestie. 🫵🏳️‍🌈⁉️ ykwim

number two. ink from bad buddy

we all know what i think about bad buddy but that doesn't mean there aren't any characters in that series who i still cherish, and ink is definitely one of them! i feel like everything in the world has already been said about her and i don't even have to explain myself. we all love her.

number three. hashimoto mio from kieta hatsukoi

she is an icon, she is a legend, etc. etc. she is so so sweet and wonderful but can also hit you across the face so hard that you fly away if you deserve it. i don't even think that's like dramatic effect exaggeration, she will kick your ass if you're acting like a fucking idiot and i love that about her.

number one. brienne of tarth from game of thrones (tv show)

ok yeah yeah horrible tv show. ANYWAY. i am fucking obsessed with brienne. she is SO!!!! KDGJDFJGDFJGKDF. sorry. what am i even supposed to say. she is a warrior both metaphorically and literally. she is the most knight-coded character of all time. no man can compare to her in knightly qualities. she is noble, she is loyal, she is fair. she is fucking iconic.

number two. clementine from the walking dead games (video game series)

i grew up with clem, actually. i was just a couple of years older than her when i first watched a playthrough of twdg. i suppose we have to make some space for the fact that she is a protagonist in 2.5/4 games, meaning that every player kind of decides what kind of a person she is on their own. but i think overall, no matter what choices you make, she always remains a very strong and resilient person. despite everything she's lost, she doesn't lose her humanity and manages to take great care of her found family (and her adopted younger brother, shout out to our murder baby aj <3). i am very proud of her, almost like she is a literal person who grew up in front of my eyes.

number three. lae'zel from baldur's gate 3 (video game)

ok, now this one was hard. not because i don't love lae'zel so much, but because there is an insanely long list of female characters from bg3 that i absolutely adore, and choosing just one was hard. in lae'zel's place, there could have been shadowheart or karlach or jaheira or either isobel or aylin from everyone's favourite divine lesbian duo or nine-fingers or or or. i can go on forever. but i picked lae'zel for this post. so, first thing you should know about her is that she can step on you and you will be thanking her for it if she does. she is just 21 years old, yet she goes through a completely worldview-shattering experience and comes out the other side not just alive, but with her head held high. her quote "what good this heart of stone, for it to be shattered?" absolutely kills me every time. i'm gonna stop here, but i could go on forever actually yes.

number four. josephine montilyet from dragon age inquisition (video game)

very similar situation with the dragon age games and the amount of characters i could choose. morrigan, isabela, and sera in particular were very strong contenders for this space. but i ended up choosing josie for this post. she is a very sweet and romantic character. she used to be a spy (and she actually got into it because she thought it sounded romantic - she's whimsical like that), but then she ended up killing someone she knew and that experience changed her forever. she is now a very successful diplomat, determined to deal with world's problems through any means other than violence. she is very open-minded, understanding, and just an absolutely lovely person overall.

number five. anne elliot from persuasion by jane austen (novel)

choosing a favourite jane austen herione is like choosing a favourite child, but here we are. the photos are from two different adaptations, and i appreciate both of them in different ways, though i don't think we have a 10/10 adaptation of persuasion just yet. anyway, anne is naturally a rather timid and people-pleasing person, which i think a lot of us can relate to, but throughout the book she really finds her own voice and stands her ground, while simultaneously not having to completely change her personality, which i really appreciate. not everyone can be sarcastic or witty or strong-willed and that's ok. she also definitely shines as the undeniably smartest austen herione, as she figures out all the secrets, decidedly does not trust clearly untrustworthy albeit charming gentlemen, and is overall incredibly sensible, which means it's very easy to read her inner dialogue, because you never find yourself sighing at how blind she is at something that's happening. she sees everything. being inside her head is a great time.

Who did what?

AE: I wrote the story after two years of heavy world-building with Sheep. Actually, I made the graphics first. I wrote the story almost all in one go because it was Nanowrimo and I was fed up with my actual Nano project and needed a palate cleanser. And then it went through like three more drafts after that with comments and edits from Sheep. Except The Lighthouse and The Signal chapters, which easily went through five drafts. God, that chapter was such a pain.

SL: I don’t want to speak for the both of us, but I think this is the most “refining through reiteration” project I’ve ever been a part of. I don’t know if it was because we hadn’t set out with the express goal of writing this Turn Supernatural Universe in mind or because the world-building was so interwoven with our regular correspondence or what, but the process felt incredibly organic, like the pressure was off; in a way, it was rather freeing. Maybe that’s just because Apfel did all the writing. [laughs]

AE: I see what you mean. On the one hand, writing multiple drafts and really polishing up the ideas that go into the story–including scrapping some wholesale or tweaking them and then rewriting other sections to make them fit–is very much how I write any of my fics. It’s a familiar, if time-consuming process. But also, it was such a relief to have someone else in my corner [laughs]. Pulling in ideas that weren’t mine and responding to things I never would have thought of made the whole thing richer and more interesting. And if you came up with something that was in contrast to something I had already written it was actually very freeing to abandon my idea and try to incorporate yours instead. I never thought I would enjoy sharing creative control like that.

Why didn't you include Hewlett? There's at least one moment in the show where he appears very feral and entirely suited to the Frontier concept.

AE: That's a really good question. Sheep, do you remember? I thought it was just because we didn't think his core personality was aligned with what the Frontier draws out of people.

SL: Oof. Did we actively decide to exclude him? It’s true that he’s difficult to picture in this setting; I don’t think I ever found myself doing so. Maybe there’s your answer. He is very much an adherent of “civilisation” throughout much of the show, I suppose - which is of course an incredibly destructive construct in its own right. It would be interesting to explore how the Hewlett of late season four would fare in the Frontier. I’m just thinking of his monologue to Simcoe on the hospital ship, where he decides that instead of continuing the cycle of destruction, he is making the conscious choice to commit himself to a path of creation, of regeneration - which means abjuring not only the violence of war but also that of English colonial civilisation, although I might be giving him too much credit with that one. In any case, he not only commits himself to that path, but Simcoe, too, which is god-tier writing, if you ask me.

Why didn't you include Abe? A spy seems like a good fit for a liminal realm.

AE: I actually have the Telegram messages in front of me, here, I'll quote:

🐑: Abe also doesn't appear at all skdfkfl is that intentional? XD 🍎: Well XD I dunno, is he part of the Frontier? His spywork depends on civilization and the information gleaned there 🐑: That's fair. It would be understandable and hilarious if you just didn't want to deal with him for a change XD 🍎: I confess I find him difficult to deal with in any story XD 🐑: Like I said: Fair XD We don't need to shoe-horn him in on my account.

AE: ...Poor Abe, we've maligned him so much.

SL: It comes from a place of love!

AE: And honestly, I think he dodged a bullet here. Though I'm happy to take suggestions as to what his undead persona would be.

Do you have any other hidden lore?

AE: Yes. One of the fonts I use in the promotional graphics is called ��Glacial Indifference”. I thought that was very fitting.

Any chance of a continuation?

SL: Well, never say never, right? I think this ‘verse harbours immense capacity for further exploration. But like I said, this whole endeavour feels more like a companion than a bounded work. I couldn’t say if that makes us more or less likely to keep working on it, or to keep coming back to it in the future.

The songstress pauses. It feels strange to try to hype herself up through words rather than actions, but she’s all too familiar with tabloids, press circuits, the quotes they run - and so she keeps it simple.

“I’d say I’m determined. My brother says I can be headstrong at times, and I can’t say I disagree. When I set my mind to something… I just go. I’ve been this way since I was a little girl.”

Her lips purse together. She hates these kinds of questions. They never let her be vulnerable in the way she wants. They spend all of their time answering it for her, anyway. Comments about her weight, how she has a penchant for sweets; she can answer this the same way she always does, but… She reflects on another answer she gave to another interviewer before returning to Penacony. How freeing it was to speak the truth, her truth.

“My voice, strangely enough. The meaning of why I sing. Is it to cover up the hardship of the world, or is it to try to spread Harmony through the cosmos?”

She thinks about all of the smiles of the children she’s taught to sing, in and out of her disguise. How each one of them fuels her, pushes her forward even when she feels like she might struggle to take another step forward.

I hadn’t even realized it was Robin at first. The Robin, sitting right in front of me. I’d just been sitting, drinking a delicious glass of SoulGlad™ when a woman asked if she could share the table with me. I said yes, of course, since it’s the Land of Dreams, and I’d hate to be a nightmare and turn away someone from something so simple. In time, we got to talking, and I asked her where she was from.

She seemed… hesitant, at first. From behind the dark shade of her sunglasses, I could see the longing in her eyes. Initially, she seemed reticent to share this with a stranger, but I promised I would be happy to listen; I realized I greatly needed the companionship at the time, so it was only fair to listen intently. After some time, she told me that when she was young, a great disaster befell her homeland. How she remembers praying to any God that would listen through grief, lamentation, and prayer. How she remembers her mother singing to her and her brother, trying to help ease their fears however she could. But to her, she could never make out the song – something I could tell still bothers her to this day – and soon her mother vanished into the Memory Zone, never to be seen again.

Despite all of this, or perhaps in spite of all of it, she still had a smile on her face. Even as she recounted something that would cause me to break down in tears if it happened to me, she was still smiling. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that.

She turned the conversation onto me, but I’m not really an interesting sort. It pittered out pretty quick, and I asked her what she does in the Land of Dreams; is she here to chase the sweet dream like I was? That smile still remained on her face, as she simply said: “I sing.”

I thought a lot about that as I heard her song – I think it was Hope Is the Thing With Feathers – ring out throughout Penacony. How I saw her dive after a figure without hesitation.

No matter what any tabloid rumor says, I will always think of that Robin - the one that helped break us free from the false dream, who chased after someone she clearly cares about without so much as a beat of hesitation.
