The Queen's Court: Rococo Extravaganza

The evening concluded with the big contests, best team coord, best crown and best solo coord. There were many astounding candidates, the best team sweepingly won by Mia and Ángel, wearing a matching Narnia inspired outfits representing Aslan and the White Witch, best crown won by Mina whose dress and accessories inspired by Anastasia the Russian princess made more than one girl among the crowd sigh and finally the best coord which was won by Ivette with a full goth outfit, second spot by Delly who sported a steampunk outfit and myself in the third place, personifying a saint guardian of the Queen.

Overall, the event was very good since it was held by two girls who had never organized one before. It did have a few things that made it less perfect but must of them were out of their hands and were dealt as best as possible. It is evident they put a lot of work and passion in La Corte de la Reina, for which I thank them immensely. I encourage these two brave girls to try again somewhere else and continue to perfect their event, whose soul was the over a hundred attendees who met and reunited there.

crazy to me that m3gan is higher on rotten tomatoes than barbie. i guess some probably had it out for barbie from the start (and its far from a perfect movie), but as far as feminine, doll-based satire goes, m3gan is so blunt and basic and really not as good as i was hoping.

This is just guesswork of course but what does Jaune and CInders first emotional bonding moment look like in your mind? Like how does Jaune first break through to her emotionally? Because I figure she has to let he walls down somehow and let the pain out before she can really heal.

I am going to assume that you don't read my fanfic, and in which case, my first assumption would be to point you in that direction. The lived-in world of feelings is better conveyed through that than my writing here.

But let's put that aside and consider from a canon perspective. We're not really thinking purely in terms of character writing here - if we're writing Knightfall in the show proper, then we've got scene and mood and music and set-up and dramatic pacing. The how matters. I can conceive of the why! I can say to you, oh this makes sense - but how does it happen? We know it should, but how do you get Jaune from point A to point B.

The point I keep circling back around to when it comes to this sort of question - perhaps the only guarantee I have - is that a confrontation over the Crown of Choice, the Beacon Relic, seems likely. The Indecisive King foreshadowing aside, it's Cinder's Relic, Jaune is the last survivor from the first Beacon Vault fight. It's asking to be reprised. Who would see it coming, though?

I can't help but think that's the perfect set-up to really, really, really touching her emotionally. To get there, Jaune has to start asking questions about the whole story, and why he's here, and what his purpose is. Like he's been set up for now.

It works on two levels: we, the audience, are expecting a fight, and Cinder's expecting a fight. They're inevitable enemies. It must be coming, right? She's got the Relic, she's used the Crown, she's seen something terrible and she doesn't know what to do. There's the slow-build up and tension...

Now imagine what happens if he doesn't fight her.

But it's a totally different tone of interaction. How can she be so broken inside?

I think it'd be very, very romantic, if you ask me. I've said this before, and I'll say it again, but if you know the Julie/Miller scene, imagine the Julie/Miller scene but even more transcendental and hopeful.

I think I draw the parallel because he believed in her when no one else did, and it paid off, and saved the world.

Like... this is not 'friendship saves the day' type intimacy, this is 'at the expense of possibly everything, I am laying down my arms at your feet to not fight you, I am asking you a question and I want an answer, I am answering the question you have in your eyes, I am not hurting you, I am staying here with you, and you don't have to run anymore' type business. This is a power you've never imagined.

So what would be her reaction? That's the thing, Jaune's superpower is compassion and vulnerability - she'd be disarmed by it. But would there be something more there? What if she's scared? What if she's alone? What if she's not anymore?

“i’ve got a feeling this year’s for me and you” | the 14th annual joe iconis christmas extravaganza night 2 early show and night 3 late show, 54 below, 12-14 and 12-15-2024 ***flashing light warning: slides 9, 12, and 14*** my second year of my favorite holiday tradition was a total blast!! i went to twice as many shows this year as i did last year, which meant double the chaos and double the fun, as if i’d expect anything less. it was so cool to see so many of my favorite iconis and family members between the two shows i went to, and especially so because i got to see some of them in different tracks than last year and some in different tracks on different nights, which was wild. there is always so much joy and silliness at joe’s shows but especially at the christmas shows, and i love that everyone onstage has just as much fun as everyone in the audience. 14th annual also marks the end of my sixth year of going to joe iconis’s musicals and cabarets, and i know i say this a lot, but i am so so very grateful for this incredible community and for all of the joy that i have in my life because of it. i got to go to eight of joe’s cabaret shows this year (one in pittsburgh, three over the summer, two halloween, and two christmas) with a bunch of my friends, and i feel like i’ve made my 2018 self very proud. my 2024 self definitely lived her best life this year :) thank you so much to every single person who made all of the joy and chaos of 14th annual possible - see y’all again at 15th annual, and may this tradition last forever!! Stuff I’m Looking Forward to in June

How is it already June? This is a fun month with Summer in full swing. In addition to LGBTQ+ Pride Month (June 1-30), Flag Day (June 14), Father’s Day (June 18), Juneteenth (June 19), first day of Summer (June 21) and Eid al-Adha (June 29), here is what’s on my radar for this month:

Movies:

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

I was a huge fan of the 2018 animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (I named it my #7 Movie of 2018) and am excited about the sequel opening 6/2. Watch for my review.

Asteroid City

A Wes Anderson movie, good or bad, is always a big screen cinematic experience. This one takes place in a desert town in 1955. Can’t wait! Opens 6/23.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny 

I out and out love Indiana Jones and in the 5th movie James Mangold took over directing duties. Don’t care what the buzz has been so far, I am excited to see Harrison Ford return to his iconic role. Opens 6/30.

Music:

Foo Fighters But Here We Are

The 11th album from the Foo Fighters is here. The band’s last album Medicine at Midnight was my #1 Album of 2021. This is their first album after the 2022 passing of drummer Taylor Hawkins. I was lucky enough to see the band at Boston Calling last week and can’t wait for the new album dropping 6/2.

Tommy Stinson’s Cowboys in the Campfire Wronger

Tommy Stinson is rock royalty! As if The Replacements weren’t enough, he also spent time in Guns N’ Roses and Soul Asylum, but he’s been laying low since Bash & Pop. Now he’s back with a new project with Chip Roberts. Their first album drops 6/2. Watch for my review.

Hollywood Vampires Live in Rio

The super group Hollywood Vampires do not tour as often as they should, mainly because the members are Alice Cooper, Joe Perry of Aerosmith, and some guy named Johnny Depp and it’s hard to coordinate their schedules. But when they do tour it’s quite impressive. I’ve been a fan of both of their albums. In 2015, they played in Rio for 100,000 fans for Rock In Rio and they’re joined by some guests too. Live album and blu-ray drops 6/2. Watch for my review.

Extreme Six

Extreme has not released a new album since 2008. I grew up a big fan of them and have seen them live in 1991, 1995, and 2009. I even got to interview former members Paul Geary and Hal LeBeaux for my documentary Life on the V: The Story of V66. Can’t wait for the new album, which drops 6/9.

Queens of the Stone Age In Times New Roman...

QOSTA’s first new album in six years is quite a welcome comeback. Their brand of stoner rock has accompanied me on my trips through the desert and Songs for the Deaf is one of the greatest albums of the 00s. New album drops 6/16.

Sir Paul’s upcoming photo book is a collection of photos he took during the peak of Beatle-mania. Color me curious! Book release on 6/13.
