Be More Chill
Be More Chill is a disappointing and repetitive play that leans too much on its ability to provide good music to develop any sort of character or original plot. Based on the 2004 novel of the same name by Ned Vizzini, it tells the tale of an average boy going through the troubles of high school when he encounters the Japanese supercomputer nanotechnology called the S.Q.U.I.P. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really do anything with that idea. Instead it uses old overused high school cliches that any casual reader of anything can recognize. Everything you think that will happen, happens. And not even in an original fashion, either. It felt more like going through the motions. We need a strong independent love interest, but she has to fall in love with him in the end, so, in the very last scene, with no prior interest in the main character, she will tell him she loves him and kiss him.
There are also a lot of plot points that are mentioned once - as if to set up conflict or problem, and then is never addressed again. In one scene, the rich kid’s house gets set on fire, and even though it triggers a song and one of the characters walks in crutches, nobody else seems to actually be affected by it. The whole deal is dropped after the song - even the crutches in the next few scenes. There’s also a moment when the SQUIP tells Jeremy that he isn’t going to be cool, he’s going to be chill, while never providing a distinction, even in the story. Other scenes are similarly disjointed, even though they happen within a few days of Jeremy’s life.
None of the characters have any dimension to them, simply given a single characteristic from the beginning that stays with them through the end - a wikipedia one word description, one could say. In addition, the plot itself is flawed, wherein the villain ultimately made everything better and not being yourself is the answer - completely contradicting their attempt at a moral. It is also unclear is Christine, the love interest, was ever interested in Jeremy, making the last scene, where she suddenly proclaims her love to him, a little suspicious. However, I feel like that problem stems from the director not allowing the actors to flesh out their own role, as the first act has a very good base for interesting characters, if not good ones.
If that were the only bad part, I would think it was a pretty okay musical. It fails terribly as a storytelling medium, but at least it would have had good music and songs. And while individually, each song and dance number is reasonably good, when you listen to all of it one after the other, it gets boring. The sound of the people singing feels especially artificial next to the techno style instrumentals, and it is just loud enough that eventually it stops being a song and just becomes word vomit with a catchy beat. When I listened to the playlist of songs on Spotify, I was shocked at the difference in quality. Maybe the problem here is that it was only previews and the issue will be fixed in the real performance, maybe not. Who knows.
The best part of the play, hands down, was the set design and the lighting. With screens lining the front of the stage, and the whole techno vibe, it was absolutely beautiful. The only time it got in the way was when there were lights flashing in the audience, and the balcony was just at the right level to have spotlights flashed right into unsuspecting eyes. Luckily, it was only done once.
In reading reviews of the 2015 off-broadway version, most critics agree with my thoughts, that the story on its own is pretty shallow, so if you don’t particularly like the music, it doesn’t provide much else in the way of entertainment. So, my suggestion is to listen to the Spotify Be More Chill Original cast recording, and if you really like that, like really love it, then sure, go ahead, there’s nothing wrong with enjoying it.

(Photo by Mark Rosengarten, License: CC BY-SA 4.0, Wikimedia Commons

(Photo by Jonathon Simister, License: CC BY 4.0, Wikimedia Commons

(Photo by Dan Hershman, License: CC BY 2.0, 圖片來源)

(Photo by Eric Riback, License: CC BY 2.0, 圖片來源)

(Photo by John Fowler from Placitas, NM, USA, License: CC BY 2.0, 圖片來源)

(Photo by Dan Hershman, License: CC BY 2.0, 圖片來源)

(Photo by Leonard^Bloom at the English language Wikipedia, License: CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia Commons

(Photo by Pbjamesphoto, License: CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia Commons

(Photo by Brian Lenihan from Vashon Island, US, License: CC BY 2.0, 圖片來源)

(Photo by Another Believer, License: CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia Commons提供)

(Photo by loggedout, License: CC BY 3.0, 圖片來源)

(Photo by Mark Rosengarten, License: CC BY-SA 4.0, Wikimedia Commons

(Photo by Dicklyon, License: CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia Commons

(Photo by petitebettie, License: CC BY-SA 4.0, Wikimedia Commons

(Photo by Khürt Williams, License: CC BY-SA 4.0, Wikimedia Commons

(Photo by ypell (Yves Pelletier), License: CC BY-SA 3.0,

(Photo by Lorne Kelly, License: CC BY-SA 3.0,

(Photo by Tangerinehistry, License: CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia Commons
至於還有什麼「特權」或套裝行程,更多內容都在官網:westpointharmony.ca/inn_and_museum中。

(Photo by Kai-sandner, License: CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia Commons

(Photo by Mike Dodman, License: CC BY-SA 2.0,

(Photo by Alexander Reuss, License: CC BY 3.0, 圖片來源)

Today in Strangeness:
On this date in 1923, the Hollywood Sign was dedicated in Los Angeles. Originally built as an advertisement for the "Hollywoodland" housing community, the landmark has since become an icon of the entertainment industry. Over the years, the sign was subject to a conspiracy to steal its letters, the deterioration and loss of the "H" and two "O's", and, ultimately, adoption by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which dropped the "land" portion of the sign.
An Exciting Week of New Shows:
George Noory kicks off the weekend on Friday night, with the return of Lionel Fanthorpe, talking about some of the world's greatest mysteries. Connie Willis is at the helm on Saturday night, looking at Remote Viewing, Sasquatch, and crop circles. George Knapp hosts on Sunday evening with a UFO special. During the week, George Noory's fascinating guests include Dr. Jonathan Quick, Jim Steinmeyer, Mike Bara, Hugh Simpson, and Arthur Rosengarten. Read/print the full schedule here.

1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer Named Best of Show at 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
Just a week ago, Bruce R. McCaw’s 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer emerged from the restoration shop of Steve Babinsky in Lebanon, New Jersey. Today, having crossed the country, the boattailed beauty captured the top prize at the prestigious 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
“This Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer is a combination of speed, style and power,” said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “Somehow these three elements—along with those fantastic torpedo running boards—become the very definition of elegance.”
The car, a sporting tourer, was first delivered to a Captain Miller on behalf of Earl Howe, who founded the British Racing Drivers’ Club.
“We’ve had the car for several years,” said McCaw, of Bellevue, Washington. “The question was whether or not to restore it. I always hate to restore something that doesn’t need it. But we finally found enough pictures that we knew the car needed to be restored.”
The car retains its original Marchal lighting equipment and chrome-plated wheels; these are complemented by low-cut doors and unusual torpedo-style running boards containing tools and other ancillary equipment. The rich blue color was a dress inspired by a dress made of peacock feathers in the 1850s.
In the final circle, Bruce was up against his brother John McCaw who, with wife Gwen McCaw, competed for Best of Show with their 1957 Ferrari 315 S Scaglietti Spyder. Also in the Winner’s Circle was a 1932 Packard 906 Twin Six Dietrich Convertible Victoria owned by William E. (Chip) Connor of Reno, Nevada.
The 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, held on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, drew 204 cars from 15 countries and 31 states—and the total included 54 first-time entrants.
This Pebble Beach Concours also raised more than $1.6 million to help people in need. Through the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, the primary charitable partner of the Concours, these charitable funds will benefit over 80 local charities.
Celebrity guests who were in attendance included comedian Jay Leno, former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, media personality and former defensive end for the New York Giants Michael Strahan, actor Jerry Seinfeld, and Chief Creative Officer of Pixar John Lasseter.
The 68th Pebble Beach Concours will be held on Sunday, August 26 (the fourth rather than the third Sunday in contrast to the norm). For more information on the Pebble Beach Concours, please visit http://ift.tt/12i7tyI.

For more information on the Pebble Beach Concours, please visit http://ift.tt/12i7tyI.

i dont think i will EVER be over the pipe night video of the bar song.....
danielle gimbal, will, mike rosengarten, and lauren standing in the background smiling at jason as he starts the song
joe pausing, looking, and pointing at jason when it gets to the chorus
everyone laughing at “lord we’re gettin’ old”
seth eliser and joe’s harmony in comparison to usually matt hinkley and jason’s
amanda flynn and rob rokicki’s line together!!!!! adorable!!!!!
the camera pan to jared weiss, who got up on that bannister and is pointing dramatically, singing my Favorite Fucking Line in the song (we boycott speaking in the future tense, we vow to just allow the here and now ‘cause it makes sense)
will immediately following That up with the Amount He Smiles while singing his line :)
camera pan, ewm coming in from behind and lorinda lisitza immediately fucking up the line they’re harmonizing on lol
camera pan AGAIN, jeremy morse!! then the transition from him to lauren!!
THAT FINAL HARMONY with everyone singing!!!!!!! incredible!!!!!
everyone staring at jason with the biggest smiles during the final oohs of the chorus
everyone raising their drinks at the very end :)
in conclusion the video of the bar song at pipe night owns me forever. thanks for coming to my ted talk.
#teresa talks#iaf#catch me thinking about this performance Forever#also that version of penny dreadfuls... i love it#danielle's solo in it her expressions and body language.... love it!!!!!!!!!#this post made for the 288 people who watched this video#except im probably legitimately 40 of those views#also wrol being the incredibly loud person he is#means you can hear him so well in the harmony part for penny dreadfuls

part two to this post! aka i overanalyse act 2 from both recordings in the most concise way as i can manage, which is Not Very.
HALLOWEEN
Oh I like the very beginning better in the obcr… the way it fades in with the staticky noise? Love that. The ocr version is nice but the obcr version took it to another level man this song was already a banger and now its even more so. Orchestration? Fuck yeah! New verse? Yes!! The transition to the 'break a vase' bit was kind of jarring at first but I've gotten used to it? And I love the new verse and Rich being the most audible on "gasoline" and the harmonies on the "Halloween! Wooah! Yeaah!"
DO YOU WANNA HANG
Oh okay this goes to obcr too just because it's less uncomfy. Like obvs I can understand why people still don't like it and that's totally valid but I'm not going to get into anything potentially discourse-y wrt Chloe. I do prefer the Broadway version tho because it's (kind of) more focused on Chloe's insecurities and she sounds waaaay more wasted which. Props to Katlyn. AND MIKE ROSENGARTEN! HES STRINGS, RIGHT? GO. OFF. I LOVE THE STRINGS IN THIS. HES BASS I THINK? HIM? YEAH!!!!!!!
MICHAEL IN THE BATHROOM
They are. The same. They sound basically the same to me. Obcr is slower though I think? I do like how it picks up speed at the end, because that feels more representative of how my panic attacks generally feel? Like the whole ramping up speed thing? Other than that I genuinely can't really tell the difference.
A GUY THAT I'D KINDA BE INTO REPRISE
This isn't technically in the ocr but it IS still in the 2015 show so I'm gonna go find an audio of Two River and listen to it after the obcr version which, by the way, I'm in love with. I hear the opening notes and burst into tears immediately! The harmony on "agree"?? Is that a third? I think it might be? Are they singing in thirds? Their voices just compliment each other's so well and it's so cute and I know Christine rejects him at the end (which…. ouch) but like its such a cute, fun song and I love Will R's "Christiiiiiine"s in this. Okay, the Two River version is SO much faster and the slower tempo WORKS because it's like. A respite from the crazy fast-paced-ness of the rest of the part? And they don't have the harmony/Will C's "Christiiiine"s are all the same and kinda boring now that we've got Will R's :(
THE SMARTPHONE HOUR
TIFFANY!!!! KILLING IT!! I get why they changed it to "Jake's house" and like. It isn't actually that bad but it still takes me by surprise ngl. But Tiffany Mann….. damn…… love her. Lauren's "ignore" sounds so much more pissed off in the obcr skdjsks. Also, I am not a fan of whatever they did to Chloe's "Everybody was screaming" but the new melody during her "Rich set a fire and he…. etc" is good! I like it! It's just weird and came out of left field lmao. But god Tiffany's riffs and the new harmonies are GOLD and I am in LOVE. AND LAUREN'S SCREAM! But I do miss the ad-libbed part right before her scream where you can pretty clearly hear Jake Boyd yell "I hope Jake's okay!!!!" :(
THE PANTS SONG
Yes I'm doing this in Broadway order and yes I prefer the obcr because Jason Sweettooth Williams has such a distinct ~well-meaning white dad doing his best~ energy that it like. Reminds me of my own dad lmao. Plus the "NOOOOOOO sergeant? i don't know-" is so fucking funny to me skdjsjs. Also that last "put your pants on"?? Jason Sweettooth does that little run (does that count as a run? Is that a run?) and I love it. I do like it faster (ocr tempo > obcr tempo) though.
THE PITIFUL CHILDREN
I'll say this as many times as I need to but obcr Pitiful Children serves the plot SO much better by keeping the Squip as the villain and allowing us to see that no, it wasn't all Jeremy's fault and no, you cannot demonize him for what he did because he's being manipulated SO much more obviously in the obcr version! Also Jason Tam's riffs are god tier I'd give my life for this man and his voice! And Tiffany??? God they really just said Tiffany Mann rights, huh? They were like "oh we're a show with a pretty pop-rock focused score but ur an opera singer? cool, we can use that!" and damn did it pay off!!!! Also, the lyrics may have changed a bunch but it's still got the same energy and the same driving beat and stuff (I think? Imo, at least.) I miss EWM rolling his r's after the instrumental break though. And like, I don't know what's up with the 'ahhhh' at the end of the bway version? Is it supposed to parallel the end of BMC pt 2? I'm kind of neutral on that.
THE PLAY
I'm gonna be honest, this song is too long for me to actively pay attention to the whole thing. BUT I think obcr has more content in it? The MDR fight and stuff with Will R's glitchy vocals which are. God tier. I miss Jake's longer solo :( I prefer the obcr for most of it though? Brooke and Chloe's lines have improved and I like that they aren't as focused on who slept with who (although Michael's "ugh" was legendary…..) and instead setting themselves up for a possible reconciliation arc. And CHRISTINE!!!! Love her. The 'Jeremyyyy's sounding almost more dissonant with the Squip speaking in between each one??? God!!! I'm in love!!!!! The Squip is generally just more malicious in this. I think the ocr starts the track at a better time though? Like. The start of The Play in the obcr is kind of weird if you don’t have the context of Jeremy offering Christine a Squip and getting rejected.
VOICES IN MY HEAD
Oh I love both versions of this song but Michael’s line being taken higher and Rich’s lisp being included in the recording and that harmony at the “listen and ohhhh” is SO pretty so THANK YOU obcr for my LIFE. Also, I don’t really know why they changed the popular kids’ lines to Jeremy but I’m digging the new ones (but also I am Very Glad that they didn’t change Jake’s) and the squad line is so good….. and him and Christine’s conversation!!! Bowling alley performance art instead of just lunch to show that Jeremy listened to her and is willing to step out of his comfort zone but in a positive way to help her fulfill her wish! With the LGW tune playing in the bg!!! Will R and Stephanie are so so cute and they have SUCH good onstage chemistry and I just. Adore them so much. Jeremy’s little “woohoo!!” when she agrees to go out with him?? God!!!! They’re both good but ocr has a calmer energy? Which is good but I personally just prefer the more upbeat, over-the-top-ness of the obcr in general!Anyway tl;dr I love both albums but ultimately prefer the obcr even though they’re like. Pretty close. Very close. Love them both.
#bmc#be more chill#if ur reading all of this.... thank u and good on u because it is So Long im so sorry#i have SO MUCH to say and i got carried away so easily but no turning back now!!! all of it is Necessary.#tada!!!#was gonna stagger posting these but. decided against it.
