I finally got to writing down my thoughts/feelings/notes/reactions on S2E1 of HOTD. Under cut because spoilers.

Thie episode – but really just this show – had pacing issues, which was one of its biggest problems, very reminiscent of what entirely killed of the seeds of good or at least decent plot points in GoT S8. IDK what genius decided to cut the number of eps to 8 – or why, given that this show is very popular – but then they had this issue somewhat last season too. We are also starting to see how recklessly cutting characters comes back to bite you in the ass, at it’s just the start here.

With the episode/season paced as it is, there was no time to spend on Jace’s diplomatic endeavors. Were they strictly necessary? No, I guess, but they could have been…interesting? And helped him grow/develop/showcase to the audience as a character. Like, I actually want Jace to be a character this season, yk?

So given that, as much as I am sad that they cut my girl Sara Snow, I can’t be too mad about it because they just kinda…cut all of it for the most part.

The North intro was kinda funny tho. For a second I was so confused because I was like “is the KIT narrating this?” Cregan is very Northy-North lol. Is that sword Ice? “You, at least, have the mercy not to threaten me with your dragon.” – lol, I’m glad Cregan got this little snipe in at Jace for his Targ revisionism. Like, yea, sure “treated” aha. Also, I liked the little Decimation reference, complete with the white/black stones.

The Daemon and Rhaenys scene was good. I like that she takes no shit from his ass. Also liked her little monologue about how hearing of Laena’s death made her go into denial and she couldn’t start grieving until she actually saw her body. It feels very realistic.

This is not what I ever envisioned Alyn to look like lmao. He feels kinda too old? But on the other hand, I guess it maybe makes sense if he’s meant to be Corly’s son. Another question though: why are we getting introduced to him and not Addam first, given who the dragonrider will be? Are they…for some reason…merging the two brothers but keeping Alyn of the two???

AEGON this ep/season! Wow, this show is truly bipolar. First, they character assassinate him in S1 and now he’s so…idk, likeable isn’t really the word. But, compounded by TGC’s charm, he really, really has the potential to be a kind of sympathetic or at least fascinating character here. Excited to see this develop.

Loved seeing him as a father. Really, we needed more interaction between Aegon, Heleana and the twins, but you know. Pacing issues. The council scene with  Jaehaerys was adorable – that Aegon cares to bring his son into council, even if he’s a bit young for it now, but you can really see him trying to be the father he never got to have in Viserys. And you can see how much he adores this kid.

Really, Aegon, for all his impatience and lack of true competence is so clearly trying. He’s impatient to go to war, but brashness of youth of course, plus it’s not like Aemond is not chomping at the bit as well. But Aegon can be restrained (for now) and does listen to his councilors. You can say that’s a sign of his weak will, and yea in part it probably is, but it’s not a terrible trait really? For a young, inexperienced king to listen to more seasoned counsel.

AND THE PETITIONS SCENE. He genuinely wants to be a good king to the smallfolk, acknowledges them as a necessary backbone. No, he has no idea what he’s doing, but really who’s fault was that? (Looking at you, Vizzy.) It was a great bit of comic relief, especially with TGC’s acting, but also just a great portrayal of what an idealistic but really inexperienced, naïve, and not naturally-suited young king might be like. “He came all this way.” Awww. He tried lol.

Aegon and his buddies! I love seeing him have friends. Will be interested if they play any more significant roles (like during the war) than just background chatter. The banter was cute. Very dumbass teenage boys vibes.

Dalton Greyjoy mention!

Aegon and Helaena’s conversation njglgjls. He really has not way how to communicate with her and she doesn’t really know how to convey her thoughts/feelings in general. But of course she’s afraid, poor girl :( But as estranged/kinda awkward their relationship is it doesn’t seem…terrible, yk?

The Alicent and Otta scene was nice. It felt like they found some understanding and a way to work together. But I do get the sense that yea, Otto is not completely satisfied with it (maybe Alicent’s definition of “victory” seemed lacking to him, which he’s not…entirely wrong there).

Luke’s funeral montage was very touching – the music was gorgeous. (I can only hope they allow Jae the same respect next ep…) Speaking of that montage, ahhhh Alicent in the sept praying for the dead… The fact this girl prays for Vizzy ffs. And also Luke. She recognizes that he was just a teenager and even though it pains her, she affords him his respect. As Criston says, “she has a gentle heart.”

Criston and Aemond’s conversation was so great on several levels!

First, of course, Aemond and his father-that-stepped-up making battle plans was great! They really do just have such a great camaraderie and dynamic of trust. Aemond believes in Criston’s excellence; they trust each other with secretive plans and vulnerable conversation. Loved the bit of Criston putting his hand on Aemond’s shoulder briefly before leaving the room.

The “that makes her a fool” line actually comes across better in context than it did in the tailer. (Although, still, who calls their mother by her name??) For one, Aemond’s frustration is understandable, he feels misunderstood and unfairly so (given that Alicent and the small council did start this whole thing, as he points out) but also he’s probably hurt, given his history with Luke. Remember how he had wanted to make a present of Luke’s eye to Alicent? He thought she was on the same page with him on this and she’s…not. Second, Aemond actually doesn’t realize this is what might be going on with Alicent – he seems kind of surprised after Criston’s explanation, the way that line is delivered. He’s having his realization out loud but he’s also not had time to digest it yet.

Ok SO I am in no way one of those weirdos who thinks that Alicent and Criston’s relationship is all about Rhaenyra (lol). BUT she is a point of common trauma for them. What Criston describes – Rhaenyra being a “cunning spider” and having an emotional influence over Alicent and Alicent capitulating to her because of her “gentle heart” is, yes, a description of Alicent, but it’s also a description of his own relationship with Rhaenyra, at least how it had felt from his POV. He understands Alicent’s feelings here so well and can empathize with her and defend her to Aemond because he loves her, yes, but also because he’s been there too.

OK, now ALICOLE.

I mean…Am I glad it’s canon? Well, yea, I’ve been shipping it super hard. Do they deserve to have consensual sex that brings them joy? Yes! Do I think it’s “hypocrisy”? Nope, lol, not matter now much TB screech that it is, it just isn’t. I’m pretty sure I’ve rebloged posts explaining why not.

That all said…man did they not handle this well, or at least certainly not in the best, most compelling way they could have. Now, I understand that my love for asexual/courtly love romance is not something most people share, so this relationship was going get physical if it was to be canon at all. Also, this show isn’t really the right genre for a drawn out slow burn romance, necessarily. But. It IS quite a big leap to suddenly go from “implied” and “romantic tension” to…fucking on a regular basis, just because Vizzy has finally kicked the bucket. Especially with these two characters.

Now, Alicent, I can get. She’s a widow, her marital vows no longer bind her. She has also completed her duty as a wife, mother and queen (re: providing heirs). Social interest in her private life is as low as it could ever be for a woman in that society. (So, not low enough really lol but historically, widows had a lot of freedom, compared to unmarried girls and wives.) But Criston? How does this work for him? His vows are still in place and he had been so heartbroken about having broken them the first time. I mean, yes, this is a very different situation and relationship. He’s older, he’s already broken those vows once so it’s like…how much he got to lose there? He can’t go back ever to NOT being an oathbreaker. But I really would have wanted to see some more set up. We should have seen them fight their irresistible pull toward each other, until they finally broke.

I did love her putting the cloak back on him afterward. A nice little anti-parallel to how he takes it off during the sex scene with Rhaenyra.

There really, really was no need to have Helaena walk in on them having sex after B&C. There had to be better ways to establish that this was a regular thing for them now and that the whole “we can’t do this again” is just Alicent/them being in denial. A way that didn’t take away from a moment that is/was supposed to be so horrific and impactful.

I do love the contrast of Alicent and Viserys always doing it missionary style and now with Criston she’s on top!

Blood & Cheese. Oh god. I have spent the last few days so angry about this. I’ve rebloged do many posts about this that I’m not sure I want to spend to much time on it. It’s just depressing at this point. But I will say a couple of things:

Helaena’s reaction does make sense to me. I’ve seen a lot of people, including TG people, saying that it was bad, and she should have been more frantic. But, frankly, she did seem pretty panicked and frantic to me. It’s just this Helaena does not emote/externalize much. At some point it seems like she almost dissociates from the situation. It’s understandable that she picks up her daughter and runs – she can’t save her son but while the assassins are distracted, of course she takes the chance to try to save her daughter. Even the necklace thing kind of makes sense. In the books, she asks them to kill her in part because she can’t stand to make the awful choice between her two boys – she’s rather die than choose. But here she hears them talk about her being a son; when they reject her necklace they also repeat how “that’s not a son.” Only a son will do, so offering her life is pointless, but trying to outbid the person who hired them might not be.

 The people (TB, lbr) shrieking about how this was Alicent and Criston’s fault are just willfully dense. If Alicent wasn’t having sex, she might have been sleeping or reading in her room or preying. There is literally nothing that implies that she would have been with Helaena if she wasn’t having sex, ffs. Also, Criston is not the only fucking kingsguard or guard. Wtf were there like no other guards idk. That’s just a plot hole/devise that looks ridiculous. But nonetheless, he 1) isn’t on duty 24/7, that’s unrealistic, and 2) is Alicent’s sworn shield, so he wouldn’t have been guarding Helaena or the kids anyway.

This is where we see that cutting Maelor was a BAD IDEA. It’s going to potentially create even more problems down the line. Who would have thought that cutting characters left and right might be an issue? /s It really diminishes the horror of Helaen’s situation and sets up this kind of unrealistic replacement choice which makes no sense because like…why would they even need her to tell them which one is the boy? It’s not that hard to feel the kids up and see which one has the right genitals, yk? I’ve seen people try to do some interesting analysis for how this scene is Thematically Relevant but nah. That’s just cope the way I used to cope with things in GoT that went wrong in the last seasons by doing metal gymnastics to try to spin them in a more palatable way for me.

But even if they fucked up on the foresight and found themselves with a situation where they needed to play this without Maelor…They could have still tried harder. For example: framing it less from the assassins’ POV and more from Helena’s, having the scene be longer, maybe in these circumstances have her try to offer her life/emote more like in the book, have Alicent actually be present too, have the rape threat against Jaehaera, have Daemon actually order Jae’s murder or at fucking least have him say “a son for a son” on screen because you KNOW the rabid part of this fanbase will act willfully blind and dumb to pretend he’s not at fault. I really think it’s that last one that makes me the most angry in the end, as the murder of a toddler is awful and horrific even without the Sophie’s choice.

And to piggy-back off that last, it’s the diminishing of the horror for TG and the whitewashing of TB as much as possible that gets to me the most, I think. They made this horrific, impactful event almost a par for the course (for the GoT/ASOIAF universe) sort of thing and with as little responsibility and plausible deniability given to TB as they could. The blatant bias (that they then have the audacity to pretend isn’t there) is infuriating.

In conclusion: there were plenty of nice things, but the disappointments really overshadowed them.

Regarding your post about the retcons to your au, what does that mean for some aspects of the story?

Joy's manic episode, which happens to be like a giant flash grenade.

The idea of Joy leaving headquarters out of guilt and shame for unintentionally hurting Riley (Which was an idea i made a few months back)

The sense of self (Specifically, the new one joy makes after the old one was thrown out by Anxiety)

her relationship with Fear.

her transformation (Since joy is not longer considered to be a disorder, how will it work now)

her takeover of Riley's mind (Especially Imagination land)

now that's just scratching the surface, but I feel like these questions are good enough for what I'm genuinely curious about.

Before I start I would like to say that My hyperfixations are the main reason i have gotten tumblr, therefore Its incredibly difficult to initiate more content for the silly au on top of school being in. That being said i will not create or work on the au content after the hyperfixation has passed. if your in the mood for me to come up with something new you can always give me a writing prompt(like maybe the intro, a oneshot or middle. It would get me out of a creative slump, practice writing, and feed the three people who enjoy this. ;)

I've been thinking about the scene at the final credits of the first film; where we get a view into the bus drivers mind.

The fact that the emotions themselves can somehow shift into different forms leaves so much room for creative uses or wonderful phycological symbolism and all that junk. Since the Headquarters and the rest of the brain being a personification, I would like to toy with how the emotions shift, warp, change along with the landscape itself. Yumi nikki and Omori type shit, that I like. Theirs so much to explore with the mind!

maybe after a while, joy produces a memory that's orange instead, they wouldn't notice and maybe along with joy the forms of the other emotions start to shift too. maybe in another timeline fear grows more eyes to keep a watch on all, anxiety's hair turns into worms that infect everything. sadness grows warts full of salty tears, for every tear riley refuses to spread. can you tell i love horror :). I would like to make parallels between anxiety and joy if i do write something.

I image they try to replicate the sense of self to an unhealthy extent, every orb from the old has to have its equivalent. They problem sent some mind workers to go find them. Although I'd imagine that the old sense of self would be long barried under the memory pile at the back of the mind. The goal of Anxiety and co would be the same as the second one maybe, they would try to find the old sense of self in a panic, and they travel though different locations along the way then in the second movie, like the scarped puppetry park and dream productions! like the emotions the sense of self warps. Its alive, all of the brain is after all. It pulses with life, cry's when it needs. neat stuff man.

Her relationship with the emotions is still something i need to explore. I want to do anger next, maybe he is pressured to do "right" and ends up being the straw that breaks the camels back for riley when she looses her patience with her friends, why don't they want to hang out with her??????

Joy would unnaturally become a figure akin to anxiety without realizing it. She projects to riley good memories yet she doesn't allow her to grieve, Instead its almost a primal rage of fear of what she once had, this creating a sort of compulsion to keep her friends. (sadness, realizing that she has been cast aside once again, she begins to grow.... bitter,)

Form and Void... Hands and Hearts.

Dean and Crowley's relationship is not fun.

Full disclosure here: I have no problems in terms of shipping and having fun with the characters outside of what's canon but I personally don't see Dean's canon relationship with Crowley as "fun", it's not something that I particularly enjoy watching. Like, the actors are great etc. but the actual story makes me feel... uncomfortable. I actually find it sad that Dean's still attached to Crowley because, as much as I like him as a character, the King of Hell acts like a total predator towards Dean and this episode highlights this side of their relationship in uncomfortable ways. So be warned that things get a little ugly from here.

Let's see how food is treated in the episode: Crowley is presented as "Father Crowley" while he puts sugar in his tea and calls Dean "a rather scrumptious altar boy". The image I get from this is both that of the sugar daddy and, because of the religious references, of the scandals surrounding the Vatican and its priests (I'm trying to be as sensitive as I can but the show is really not and Crowley literally makes a reference to these events later on in the episode).

Father Crowley is a piece of shit.

He will later pull up in a van and kidnap young Amara with this line:

My, haven't you grown into a sweet young thing? Want some candy, little girl?

If we consider that Amara and Dean are connected (by the mark that's above Amara's heart and that was on Dean's right arm) Dean and Crowley's past relationship doesn't look so much fun anymore (well, it never was fun to begin with as I've written although the show did its best to make it look like it was fun with the karaoke, the cowboy hats and the sex. I mean, on paper it does look like fun if we can just forget that Dean was very much Crowley's guinea pig).

In case you were wondering, Dean and Amara are bound, guys.

Crowley here is the preacher/hunter of "The Night of the Hunter". He dresses like a priest but he's hunting for demons (yeah, I know, it's a clear reference to "The Exorcist" too). He happens to find "the child that eats the souls" and proceed to kidnap her. I mean, brrrrr.

And how does Dean feel about it? He still loves him! Poor, poor, poor Dean.

While Sam went for the heart of Poor Guy with the electrocution device, the angels went for Cas' heart (and other parts too) with the angel blades, Dean goes for Crowley's heart with Ruby's knife. Unlike Sam and the angels, he doesn't finish what he had set up to do.

Dean's knife is pointed at Crowley's heart but I'm bad at taking screenshots so this is what you get.

Instead, he pins Crowley's to the wall by stabbing his left hand (the hand of love and receiving) with an angel blade. Visually, it's quite similar (not the same, similar) thing that happened to Cas at the end of S10. It couldn't be more sexual (angels blades are the dicks, also interesting choice of weapon to stab Crowley: Cas' ghost in their relationship is ever present) and more problematic: in a heartbeat Dean goes from prey to predator.

They re-used this very explicit image in S12.

Just like Dean is bound to Amara, he's still bound to his former abuser Crowley. And, I mean, from a storytelling pov it tracks because Amara is very much Crowley's and Dean's baby ("You're very maternal, Dean"). Yeah, I can hear your "ewwww" from here knowing where they went with Dean and Amara but I didn't write the show, they did and I'm picking up the things they've put down. Anyway, Dean and Crowley's relationship will be over only once Dean's not bound to Amara anymore. Or, at least, it should be but like any love triangle writers liked to milk it unti it was dry, i.e. one of the three permadied. This is why, I think, we had the echoes of the same trite trope in S12 too and if you enjoyed it good for you. For me it was torture.

Demons would be the perfect angels. Sam too.

A SPN-related theory of mine is that demons would make perfect angels. Both demons and angels are cursed with the "I get what I want" mentality. Abbadon said it, Crowley says it again in this episode. It's a very angel-like mentality, however demons are unironically more likely to put in the effort, follow the guidelines, work behind the curtains. They would be perfect angels for Chuck.

Ironically this time, angels and demons have hardly ever gotten what they wanted (hello Castiel!). They all tend to work in a certain direction only for the result to backfire in the end or leave them dead. Which reminds of a certain character named Sam Winchester.

"Form and Void" is an episode that explicity parallels Sam to the angels and to Crowley. Sam and Crowley's parallels are my everything. Up until s8 they were quite obvious while after that they're in the story's backbone rather than clearly on screen. If you care, this is one of the reasons why Crowley and Lucifer's power struggle could've been way more interesting if they had thrown in Sam in some capacity instead of doing whatever they did with Sam in s12. *breathes and calms down*

The End (of this rambling post).

"Form and Void" foreshadows how S11 would end: dark and light becoming One. It's something that US tv shows (tended to) do a lot when they deal with Christian themes: when they're going a little over the edge and very close to blasphemy they pull a "Eastern Mysticism" card to signal that they were just kidding! In SPN they did the same thing to Jack in s15. When they deal with God they use buddhist concepts as a cop-out to avoid doing things that may upset Christian believers (and no, canon bisexual God is less of a threat than canon God's older sister who's more powerful, female-presenting and holding a huuuuge grudge or than having a world with no God, no Hell and no Heaven).

Hands and hearts are a huge motifs and they signal what the characters will be doing and/or their true intention/identity. In order to see this, though, one must pay appention to the scene shown at the very beginning of the episode, a scene from the movie "The Night of the Hunter". This specific scene tells us that what we see is the opposite of what the writers mean and that the core theme of S11 is not so much God vs The Darkness but rather love. This love, however, lies in cages protected by keys and it's secret and forbidden but, as that scene tells us, love's a-winnin'. To save the day and let Love still win we've got a giant plot-twist in the form of maternal love and the resurrection of Mary Winchester. The heart's needs are met, its wants are still unknown. You can't always get what you want... SPN really did believe that.

Anyways, yeah, actually this one had a whole backstory (kinda) around it, remember like two years ago being on a walk and listening to the song and thinking "I guess this one could work as an amv- but nah amv's are emberassing, I would never make one" - guess history is funny like that. Still wonder if people got pissed of and left the iceberg video before ever coming to the part cause I kinda shittalked amv makers, guess I had to do it, it is what it is. Still, dunno think it turned quite well for basically the first amv I ever really made (think the closest I did before was cutting the Hey Arnold intro to Uptown funk when my brother asked me as a request 7 years ago lol, that shit got lost forever and only went up to the first 20 seconds or something anyways) But yeah, if I'm already rambling, guess this will probably be my last post for some time, will try to abstaine from just posting bullshit and spaming tags on here, hopefully for good but worst case atleast like for a month and a half. Sorry this is a bit late, I had some events to attend the past few days..! And thanks!! It makes me happy to hear that you like my rambling :)

As for my thoughts on the other characters, I love most of them actually!! I love love love Sakura!!! I especially love how well her character is structured: through design, through her backstory, through daily life and relations and even how well her name suits her lmao. I really like how she has a background where she was really sick as a child (till we meet her), and how her being a miko, nurse and counsellor (she has three fucking jobs and I love it) has her help others since she knows how it's like to have problems (physically or psychologically). Sakura counselling might be my favorite bit though, just seeing how she helps guide mostly the students is really nice and I wish it was appreciated more. And don't get me started on how she is the perfect straight man to the craziness of the others. She was part of the craziness at first (from her intro to her earliest nurse days, Ataru straight manned instead), but it seemed like RT thought Sakura straight manning was much better while Ataru was cemented as the funny man in their dynamic and it suits them so well. The sane Sakura having to deal with everyone's BS (esp Ataru's) is my favourite thing lol. I also really like her relationship with Tsubame, him being the dumb to her smarts.(The remake plays down Tsubame's idiocy btw and it disappoints me so so much) They're that one couple we all ship without knowing it lmao. The chapters which focus on them are really nice, esp that one with the ghost girl who interfered with them and Sakura got super jealous lmao, it we interesting side to see from her and it was really fun :)

Oh shit, I rambled so much about Sakura, I forgor this ask wasn't just about her, I'm so sorry lmao, she is in my top three UY gals for a reason XD

I think up next in UY blorboism to me (who aren't main characters) would be Asuka. Idk, I just love her, she is so cute and so silly. I think what put her in the blorbo category specifically were these panels: one where Asuka made her own armor from a military tank or something idk and she looked so cute while wearing it!!!! And the second is from the arc where Asuka goes to school and she wears a pair of broken glasses in the final panel of the arc which looks super funny and silly XD

Asides from that, I love her voices, both of them!! They sound so soft and sweet!! And her shtick is very entertaining and chaotic, I love all her chapters!!

I think up next in terms underrated characters I love would be Benten and Oyuki. They both have personalities which bounce off well on other characters and especially each other. They're like my #1 Yuri ship in the series, but even in a platonic sense, they're dynamic is really good!! I need to draw them more, lol.

Ran and Ryu are two characters who I feel are really popular which is why I didn't mention them above. Ran's bipolar nature is so good and funny while her growing understanding and reconciling with Lum slowly is really sweet. Ryu is one of those characters who I wish was treated better because I feel like she deserves everything she wanted but her stupid father comes in the way. Ryunosuke's character is one of those things I wished was done better. Give her all the sailor suits, bras, swimsuits, skirts, etc. she wants!!

Cherry is really funny, like in a way he's basically Ryunosuke's dad but done so much better. The amount of moments where I've wheezed laughing cause of him is way too many too count. I like Kotatsu neko, he's cute and it's funny how he's one of the strongest characters!! Ryoko is another one I like because of how insane she is lmao and Inaba is so so sweet!! Meanwhile, Rei is hilarious and his cow form is so silly XD

I also really like Rupa and Carla too, Idk, the way they're supposed to mirror AtaLum and their crazy dynamic captivates me.

very early on in OP I was kind of fascinated by the idea of a pre-series Nami and Zoro meeting up, specifically when Zoro's just getting lost starting his career as a pirate hunter, while nami's been on the cat burglar bit for a good while.

there's something really fun about the contrast there-- Nami being a jaded and clever but seeing herself as somewhat powerless, while Zoro's determined, comparatively strong, but has no clue what he's doing.

the contrast is fun, the set up was fun (nami gets caught at a marine base, zoro's swords get locked at same base, nami catches him badly sneaking around in a marine uniform that's on the wrong way, nami bullies him into breaking out together), but I could never figure out a nice emotional conclusion for it

...haha, not being able to figure out a conclusion to something; sometimes I start an intro to a fic with the idea that writing down the scene in my mind I'll figure out the ending, but sometimes it doesn't happen

i'm Thinking Again and i really think SNW needs to Do Something Different with spock's character arc instead of just trying to retread old ground.

we already know spock has a hard time dealing with his mixed-race identity and how he tries to be As Logically Vulcan As Possible even though other vulcans see him as inherently less logical because of his human heritage. and being ashamed of himself for his own humanity and emotional responses and such. we've already seen him slowly work through that in TOS and the movies and that he eventually does come to a place where he's comfortable with who he is and comfortable acting emotionally as well as logically.

the tension between emotion and logic is a key part of what makes spock as a character so compelling so i get that part of it is always gonna be there. but the way SNW does it is so reductive and surface level that it's just boring. first of all, its so stupid to tie a deeply complex personal issue like that to a love triangle. it feels like its just "do i need to be more like a human (for christine) or more like a vulcan (for t'pring)" and the whole thing is approached in a really bioessentialist way. treating the vulcan logic thing as an irrefutable result of their biology rather than a learned cultural practice. there's also no real tension to it?? because we already know that it takes YEARS for spock to resolve his inner conflict (and that he doesn't end up with either of the people in the love triangle lol). so it just feels like build up that never goes anywhere.

it's interesting to me that this seems to be a uniquely SNW problem, because AOS and Discovery both did something different with spock's character within the context of his long term identity issues.

AOS takes place in an alternate timeline, so it's literally Not The Same Spock and there's aspects of his character that are completely different. the flashback scenes in star trek 2009 definitely seem to follow the same arc as TOS spock, but there's Way More than that going on. i mean, in AOS, vulcan gets destroyed and spock ends up watching his mother fucking die. that's an extra layer of trauma right there and it's arguably a bigger part of his character than his identity issues. and another big difference is that AOS spock is dating uhura and was initially super hostile towards kirk, so that kinda shakes up the dynamics between him and the rest of the crew a little. old TOS spock also encourages AOS spock to consider looking beyond logic and going by what he feels, so AOS spock seems a bit more at ease with that part of himself.

when AOS did go into the logic/emotion/identity plotline, it was usually done through the idea of duty and divided loyalties. the big one that comes to mind is in star trek beyond. logically, it seems best for him to drop out of starfleet and help work to rebuild vulcan culture instead, but emotionally he wants to stay where he is. there's also the intro scene in into darkness where he's insisting that the others leave him to die (based on his sense of duty to starfleet regulations) while internally being terrified of y'know. dying in a fuckin volcano. and how that whole mindset kinda flips when kirk dies and spock has a complete breakdown, despite knowing that what kirk did was logically the best choice for the sake of the ship. basically being caught between his professional/cultural duty and his friendship for the enterprise crew.

discovery is a bit different, because now we're getting the same spock as TOS, but younger. what's interesting to me about this iteration of trek is that the conflict between logic and emotion is playing out around spock through his family. when we first see disco spock, he's completely incoherent and delusional after mind melding with the red angel and getting his brain fried by the experience of nonlinear time. you know, shit that happens in star trek. as his condition gets worse and worse, amanda and sarek have opposing ideas about how to help him, with amanda having the more emotion-based approach and sarek having the logical approach. in the end, neither of them are right and it's michael, who is also kinda caught between human and vulcan cultures, who is able to help spock.

aside from his complicated family situation, discovery shows spock wrestling with his identity from a totally different angle. he's furious with himself because he can't make sense of the red angel situation logically or emotionally. basically, he feels like he's failed BOTH parts of his heritage, which is different from TOS, where he was mostly just trying to be the ideal vulcan and looking disdainfully at his humanity. michael points this out when the two of them are fighting and spock yells back "RIGHT NOW I FEEL THAT FAILURE IS LIBERATING!" which is a really fucking interesting statement that i never see people bringing up. in a way, it's like spock feels that failure has given him permission to reject human/vulcan cultural expectations and live more in the in-between spaces, even if it takes him a long time to fully embrace that.

the other big thing from discovery is that it adds new things that enhance spock's arc from TOS. for instance, spock's dyslexia adds a whole other layer to his ongoing identity issues. not only is he an outcast for being half human, but he's also got a learning disability in a society that values academic achievement so highly. there's also michael's final bit of advice and how TOS shows that spock really took it to heart. so like, disco shows spock moving towards who he will eventually become in TOS, even if he's not quite there yet. i guess you could argue that SNW spock's relationships with christine and t'pring are doing something similar in terms of adding to TOS canon? but imo in that case its more like, underscoring things that were already present in TOS instead of really trying something new. and none of it really moves spock towards where he is in TOS. so spock in SNW feels almost like a regression rather than building off what happened to him in discovery and moving forward.

ANYWAY ive gone on for way too fuckin long so what im trying to say is there are clearly ways to work within spock's ongoing character arc without just doing the same thing as TOS. and since SNW isn't trying new things, its portrayal of spock really falls flat.

Normally She-Ra settles for punches or self-defense--her goal isn't hurting Catra per se but trying to stop the harm she's doing.

Honestly, as a new Raicass shipper, a lot of these points make sense to me. I also figured that an age difference might be why some people would be turned off by this ship, but like you said, we only ever see Cassie as an adult, and she also acts like an adult. And besides, if this is a problem for Raicass, why wouldn't it be a problem for other ships that pair Raiden with one of the other mortal characters? Raiden existed for literally a millennia, there's really no point in getting upset over shipping him with any mortal adult character. Especially the Raiden x OC shippers, why do they get a free pass, but not Raicass? Whoops, I didn't mean to rhyme 🤣

It might also help to interpret their story as Raiden not actually being a constant presence in Cassie's life as she was growing up, as I always figured that he was only prominent when she first joined SF to fight for Earthrealm, which she did AFTER she left high school. Cassie even referred to Raiden as a mentor in one of her MKX intros with him, so that might be a clue that they started seeing each other often once Cassie joined SF.

Of course, this doesn't mean I imagine them becoming a couple during MKX because I feel like that would be too early for them, and they do have a shit ton of other things to worry about first lol. Maybe during a version of MK11 where Dark Raiden was able to come back to the light instead of getting written out of existence, or if Past Raiden stuck around (whether he stayed a god or became mortal) - either of those could have been a good time for them to start considering feelings.

Also, I'm glad you included a gif of that scene at the end of MKX because when I saw that after I started shipping Raicass, I thought to myself, "Whoa, Cassie? Why are you reaching out to him like that? Why do you suddenly want him to come back to you?" And things like Cassie speaking for Raiden in MK11 when she tells Jacqui and Past Jax that he has a mission for them despite Raiden himself not saying it really does put it all into a new perspective 🤔

Anyway, all this is to say, Raicass deserves some love, and I'm happy I'm not alone in this rarepair ship! 💖

Raiden is seriously and strict, he not like Fujin: yeah, Raiden feels affection for mortals, but he lost so many people, his warriors are dead so many times — it was his fault, and he just tired of losing someone he’s cares about… That why Raiden distanced and cold, maybe. His task defend earthrealm — and thunder god does his duty.

And Cassandra… She is young mortal woman, she is full of life. Cassie sees her duty to follow in the footsteps of her parents and defend earthrealm. It’s hard, but she tries. She kicks shinnok’s ass and she really strong young warrior.

♡I think Cassandra be a light for Raiden, she will show the tired god how mortal life is beautiful. She can breathe new life into him, new bright colors in his gray days.

I have a headcanon, that Raiden could leave his immortality for Cassie and live with her an ordinary mortal life. Well, why not, he became a mortal in mk11, so 🤷🏼‍♀️

♡Raiden can give Cassandra a safe relationship, because he is a serious and adult man — god, after all! And Cassie will definitely be looking for a man similar to her daddy — a man, who can will love her as much as her father loved her mother.

After all, father is always very important in the life of a daughter.

♡Well, of course, problems will be in the relationship between Raiden and Cassandra, because Raiden is a complex, proud character and he is not the one, who will allow himself to fall in love and accept it so easily — he will rather deny feelings and reject them in order to eventually accept them.

Its FINE if you want to make a fan dlc thats fuckign awesome but saying its meant to be something that the devs wouldve made and then fucking. immediately saying youre going to rewrite some of the lore is so- what. why. and in the guys intro video too it he shares some of the precursor concept art and i- 0oooooghh i swear to god if he decides that actually THATS what they look like im going to explode we HAVE canon architects they ALREADY EXIST. i dont fucking understnad subnautica fans theres so much more to this game than"oouughh beeg feesh" and its so IRRITATING that nobody seems to engage with the lore. like. ugh i feel like so much of the fandom just REJECTED all of the architect lore that was given in BZ just cus the game wasnt recieved well. i cannot understate how angry it makes me to hear youtubers still call them precursers. thats not what theyre CALLED anymore.

Void exploration is a HUGE gold mine of ideas and its SUCH a WASTE to tack it on to the origional story. it makes no FUCKING SENSE for Riley to want to go into the void they just want to go HOME. they want OFF THE PLANET. thats the point of the game. and it UNDERMINES the game to add void exploration just for the Gameplay part of things.

Alterra has MULTIPLE research facilities built by Below Zero. it would make a lot more sense to make a WHOLE NEW STORYLINE for your big project. That way you can add all your new submarines and give them a reason for being available instead of just "uuhh the fragments of this sub are on these tiny floating islands waay out in the void" that makes no SENSE the fragments for the other subs are FROM THE AROURA CRASH. ough my god i hate it im so angry. the concept doesnt even engage with the void!!!!!! its all just a decending staircase of chunks of rock,,,

it would make a lot more sense for alterra to create a dedicated void research mission, that way you can have a whole game set in the void, with specialized equipment, a new protag, etc without encroaching on what made the first game so special.

i have to say that you're not the first anon who's disgruntled that, out of aegon & aemond, they chose aemond as the character to make more sympathetic. i think you are right in that aemond was given some of daeron's traits; it is very likely that they did not intend to include daeron at all, so they preferred to mesh these two characters as a compromise. in any case, they must have fought over it; perhaps it is one of the reasons miguel sapochnik left - grrm even gave a public declaration that daeron WILL be included and when the time came to design the intro, they DID include 4 rivulets of blood streaming out of alicent to signify her 4 children, as they did with helaegon's 3 children, even though only the twins appear in S1.

so, yeah, it's fair to say mewmond came about as a result of a compromise. that being said, i'd be lying if i said i didn't love what they did with his character. i'd even go so far as to say that it was the right decision to make commercially as well, because he became vv popular with v little screen time. even team black stans keep trying to steal him from us. i don't have a problem with making characters more sympathetic - team black included - what bothers me is the ridiculous bias. generally-speaking, i always like it a lot more when they make the characters out to be more human and understandable, even when they're antagonistic.

there is also the fact that, from a geographical POV, they couldn't really focus on daeron in S1 either, bc he's canonically in oldtown and they couldn't have brought him to KL without performing significant changes to the plot and complicating themselves. SO, taking into account the whitewashing of team black as it is, if they would have made aemond less sympathetic, the two sides would have ended up even more imbalanced.

anyway, what i actually wanted to say is that the characterization they did give aemond makes a lot of sense even in book-context. the maester writing FB is clearly not interested in fleshing out aemond as a person, this is a history textbook, but it is believable to me that aemond would have incurred a lot of psychological and physical damage as a result of his eye being slashed out. and idk it's just more interesting to lean into that side instead of making him a terrorist child from the get-go. this absolutely does not contradict any of the fucked up shit he'll do later on in the series, it's more about progression and descent into madness

 We also rated our survivability in all of our collective games, since Mars isn't an author! Fun stuff! Spoilers, though: it’s really not looking so great for me (Dani) but that’s fine!!!  😌

1. I’m a photographer as well as a graphic artist (but not like. A painter/drawer kind of artist!) and, on a general level, a maker and a tinkerer!

2. Fountain pens! I only write with ink, and only with fountain pens, and I use bottled inks/converters!

3. I’m pretty eclectic with music, but my top genres are alt rock, indie, indie pop, etc, as well as top 40s and some rap.

4. I feel like this is the hardest one for me to answer? Favorite movies/shows? Avatar: the Last Airbender has been a favorite show of mine since I was a little kid, but I have a harder time thinking of shows I would call a favorite in recent years. There are shows I’ve liked, and a lot of shows I’ve watched. But I’m picky! And demanding! It takes a lot to earn a place in Dani’s Trophy Case of Favorites. 😌 I would say I quite liked A Quite Place (movie), and I liked Us (movie). When it comes to TV shows, I have a hard time being pleased with them if they don’t end well. As a result, I have a penchant for a good limited series/miniseries (because they’re stories that have an end in mind and the plot reflects that, dagnabbit).

In The Goodfellows? I think I stand I chance. I can exercise my sparkling wit and lovable personality to the best effect. I’m gonna give myself an 8/10 survivability rating. Even if I don’t have the right skills, I can go crying to the person who does and they’ll save me. Maybe.

In Creatures’ Cradle? I’m super $**!%d. 😌 1/10 survivability rating. And that 1 is me being nice to myself. The day the apocalypse breaks out I would probably be patient 0. I am self-aware. I would not do well in an apocalypse. Zombies care not for aforementioned sparkling wit and lovable personality, and I have all the muscle of a boiled spaghetti noodle. So it’s a no go.

Greater Than Gods (Cruz): Well. I’m going to be optimistic. And say that I have the wisdom not to do things I shouldn’t do and not to rock boats I shouldn’t rock. I’m going to give myself a 7/10 based on insider information, but also based on reckless optimism!

Vardir (Cruz): Cruz says this is a lighthearted game, so 10/10 LOL.

When it Hungers (Roast): I’m giving myself a nice, mediocre 5/10. I think I could put my mind to work here; I joke that I’m the village idiot, but I’m actually pretty smart! Unfortunately, I’m also curious, and maybe a little bad with authorities who won’t answer my questions. So I knocked off a lot of points due to the fact that I’d probably poke the metaphorical bear. So it’s a real coin flip as to whether I’d really make it or not.

Orthall Bay (Nines): Considering the genre is “horror” and the game intro includes the words “monster” and “maim,” I’m giving myself a whooping, enthusiastic 3/10. Yes, folks, I am that confident in myself! Once again, I can’t charm the socks off a monster (or can I?), so one of my greatest weapons is snatched from beneath my feet. Alas!

1. Beloved I’m a college student in the middle of a pandemic... i can hardly even write LOL i do draw at times which u can see in my personal blog (nothing too good really) and i used to do karate before things went to shit <3

I'm gonna give myself a solid 5/10 in all other WIPs because y'all aren't writing lighthearted stories either. I feel like as long as I avoid the role of the MC I will be mostly fine. I hope. But as Dani said I'm also prone to fight the wrong person and dig my own grave so 😌

1. Well, writing is a very, very, very, distant hobby since Words Hard, but I like to crochet and sculpt a little! Anything to do with fiddling with my hands and I’m good to go. And like, debatable but graphic design is my passion [insert clown emoji here since Tumblr said No]

2. Oh yeah a bunch! DnD yelling at people, thinking of arson, crocheting, rock climbing and simply vibing. I got into podcasts a few years ago and I’m always looking for more recs, so if you have some, hmu 😤

3. Pls,,,,my music taste is,,,so weird do not let me expose myself with lack of consistency but uhh. Current songs that are stuck in my head include; Cult of Dionysus , Achilles Come Down and The Last Shanty  

4. If you’ve ever spoken to me before, I probably yelled about Pacific Rim to you or at you. Plus I love all The Mummy films and really enjoyed Castlevania (s3 excluded, we do not perceive that) as well!

The Goodfellows: I wanna say a solid 7/10 because I’d hardcore vibe with the Traveler and probably instigate so much nonsense. I can also bribe with blueberry cake so maybe. 

Creature’s Cradle: maybe a 4/10 and only because of pure spite keeping me alive long enough to smack someone. I’ve prepared for hypothetical  zombie apolcapyses and I won’t hesitate to bap, but will be bapped back because I’m weak as hell. 

Greater Than Gods: a toss up between 2/10 and 7/10! I can vibe and be chill but I also have terrible impulse control so... 

Vardir: hm....I think pretty good survival rates all around? If you ask me to fight then like, okay sure, your knees are mine. So maybe a 8/10? 

When it Hungers: .......8/10 just because I’d refuse to die if I can be a cool creature. Living for the aesthetic can and will drag me outta hell. But I’m also clumsy as hell so I’d probably crash as a porcelain or hold a rooster and perish (aka, real rating is a good 3/10) 

Orthall Bay: 2/10, nope. Nope I’d be taken out in a heartbeat. Monsters can go pspsps and I’d head straight into the dark creepy forest like a fool if someone comes @ me. Half the time I’ll just assume it’s sfx makeup and vibe until it’s too late.

1. If I'm not writing, I'm usually watching video essays on Youtube. My go-to channels as of right now is Disrupt and Aperture! I just really like their videos. Aside from that, I recently got into podcasts. Currently going through Hello From The Hallowoods and Shelter and Warning, which are made by queer creators!

2. Oh oof, there's quite a bit so I'm just gonna put down one thing. For some reason, I really got into collecting tiny astronaut things? I recently bought this astronaut desk light, and I've got a package coming in for the miniatures I ordered. No purpose for them other than I think they're neat <3

3. I'm a bit private with my music taste (even tho I have Spotify connected on Discord lmao), but there's 5 songs that I'm currently obsessed with. I keep replaying them over and over again. Just squeezing all the serotonin I could get outta them.

4. I can't really say I have a fave TV show or movie because I can't really just pick one, but my current fave is 9-1-1 and Resident Alien. 9-1-1 because I just really love the found-family dynamics and how the show tackles sensitive topics, and Resident Alien because it's lighthearted comedy. My all-time fave movie is Flipped! I have the book too and I like rereading from time to time <3

Then again, it's a vast environment change and while I can adapt pretty quick, I wouldn't like the lack of control in the unknown.

Going off what Cruz said, Vardir is lighthearted and focused on personal growth so I think I'll be okay! Self-growth here I come, babey!

Maybe I'm overestimating myself, but I think I'll be able to survive in a supernatural post-apocalyptic world! Ah, but it depends on the motivation though. I like the idea of rebuilding communities and eventually societies, but the survival turmoil would be a constant battle I'd have to overcome. If we're talking survival itself though, I think I'll do well.

When it Hungers: 8/10

That's probably my wishful thinking but I think I'll be fine. Maybe. Possibly. Don't like the idea of being regulated by an organization so if I was a non-human creature that could pose a problem but I can roll with it <3

Orthall Bay: 6/10

Assuming I'm not playing as MC, my chances of survival uhhh changes quite drastically. Not enough to guarantee an untimely demise, but certainly enough that it would constantly keep me on my toes. I think that's the safest answer I can get without spoiling anything lmao

1. Too many :'D I knit, I sew, I do carpentry (well, learning), I bake, I'm hammering away at HTML and CSS, my job kind of encourages learning new things and I take that to picking up new hobbies!

2. My time is kind of consumed with school work and work work and WIP work so not a lot of time to pursue niche interests right now. I've been watching a lot of horror game playthroughs, true crime youtubers, and an adorable show on Netflix called the Repair Shop <3
