You know what I find super charming about long running actual play shows? When one player's characters across different campaigns follow one, small theme, like Emily's love for multiclassing or Liam's characters having fancy magical boots (Boots of Haste in C1, Stormrider Boots in C2 and now Boots of Striding and Springing that Orym has)

Reading @sugarfey, @venndaai and @the-roci’s thoughts about Fred’s death in 5x04 made me think about the political implications of him being gone. I was always a little conflicted about his character because on the one hand, he’s always seemed the most reasonable among the Belter leaders, and I like Chad Coleman in the role. But on the other, he’s so obviously a person from a priviledged group allying himself with an oppressed group because of guilt that even though the character is not white, he comes across very much like the stereotypical white savior, come to teach the natives how international politics is done properly to offset his own guilt. What reconciled me with the character somewhat was that until this season, he at least had some self-awareness regarding his positionality, although that seems to have been lost somewhere between seasons 4 and 5, what with him hiring an obviously racist Earther to boss around his Belter employees. But now that he’s gone, as sad as that is, it also got me thinking how it also leaves space for other characters (read: Drummer) to take over his role and do better.
Looking at the show (and to a lesser extend the books) from the perspective of the narrative, it’s clear that there’s just not a lot of space for different Belter leaders who fill the same niche in the ecosystem, if you want to look at it like that. There is a limited amount of screen time dedicated to Belter politics to go around, so the political landscape is broken down to a handful of types of leadership, each embodied by one person. There’s Anderson Dawes, who is basically a mob boss who managed to get an entire asteroid under his control. His leadership style is highly personalized, his authority is derived from a networked system of command resembling a pyramid scheme, he commands a mix of loyalty and fear from his people (both those working for him and those living in his territory) and he has a symbiotic relationship with the official government of Ceres - pulling the strings from the shadows.
While he is semi-legitimate (as in recognized by others in power, not, you know, morally), there are also the fully underground leaders: Marco in season 5, and (to a lesser extend) Ashford in seasons 3 and 4. Marco also has a very personalized leadership style, people who feel fear and loyalty towards him to the same extend, and he’s building a networked system of command (although it’s probably smaller since he hasn’t been in the game as long as Dawes). What he doesn’t have (or want), however, is ties to official sources of authority, simply because he wants to gain that position for himself. He wants to be the puppet ripping itself free of its strings, not the puppetmaster, so to speak, which ties in neatly with his desire to be feared/adored and his narcissistic streak (both of which haven’t been as prominent in the show so far as they are in the books, but I’m sure it’s coming). Another difference is that he embraces romantic fantasies of the heroic freedom fighter much more than Dawes, lending him a specific sort of charisma or mystique that basically begs for him to be the hero of the stories that Belter children get told when their community got humiliated/threatened by Earth or Mars once again. Based on the accounts we hear about him, I imagine that Ashford was similar to Marco in some ways when he was younger, even though by the time we meet him, he has mellowed out a little and does so further when being placed in an official position of authority, thereby getting closer to the sort of leadership that Fred represents.
Which brings me to the third type beside the mob boss and the heroic guerilla: the elder statesman, which Fred embodies to a T. He is the official authority, and while he also relies on contacts with semi-legitimate and underground actors to some extend, his leadership and command structure are a lot more formalized. He derives his authority from sources external to himself, specifically his job as the boss of a Belter powerhouse in terms of economic growth and innovation plus his legitimacy in the eyes of Earther (and maybe Martian?) politicians. Of course said legitimacy is derived mainly from his past as an Earther colonel and the contacts and know-how he still has from back then, but he’s probably learned the hard way that that doesn’t get anything done when negotiating with Belter leaders, so he frames it in terms of playing by international rules and appealing to universal values, which comes with less baggage. This framing of his perspectives is what makes him bearable for many Belters, while the success story that is Tycho makes him attractive.
Long story short, three leaders (and types of leadership) is already quite a lot when you consider the limitations of both screen time and the capacity of more casual viewers to remember characters and names - in comparison, Earth and Mars are presented as much more unified. Putting aside the pragmatic explanation, it also makes sense from an in-universe perspective - of course there would be more people claiming authority than we’re shown, but you still need to distinguish yourself from your rivals in order to get people to recognize your authority. Being a cheap imitation of Fred makes you one of his higher-ranked employees; being a cheap imitation of Dawes makes you one of his subordinates; and being a cheap imitation of Marco probably makes you dead, if you scratch his ego enough. And what’s more, not only are the roles limited, but they were all quite definitely taken - until 5x04.
Now the spot of the person who is able to work for the greater good instead of their own ego (Marco) or territorial ambitions (Dawes) is open again, and Drummer is by far the best candidate for it. In one of his last conversations with Holden, Fred seemed to encourage him to follow his path (stopping to fight and starting to build), but seeing how Fred met his end, it’s obvious why Holden taking over would not be a good idea. Drummer, on the other hand, is definitely not there yet, but she distinctly dislikes Dawes’ way of doing things, and she doesn’t have the self-aggrandizing streak that’s necessary for the heroic guerilla role (as a side note: as much as I enjoyed her I am Camina Drummer moment this season, and her speech in season 3, both of those were an act to get things done, not an innate desire for other people’s adoration). What she does have is: an eye for the shifting political landscape (not only in Marco’s trial in season 4, which obviously backfired, but also much earlier in season 2 when they were discussing what to do with Earth’s torpedoes); a growing capability of planning ahead (like how she acts as the captain of the Dewalt), and a willingness to set aside personal wishes and aversions for the greater good (like when she teamed up with Holden, of all people, to save the day in season 3). Fred had all of those as well (some more than others), but he was a bit too captivated with the story about himself that he told to others, and in the end he couldn’t offset the implications of his position as an ex-Earther soldier who decided to save the Belt. Drummer doesn’t have any of those handicaps. Her sense of responsibility for people other than her family needs to be reawakened, but we know it’s there from past seasons, and the next few episodes are probably going to have her struggle with her tendency for revenge over caution even more, but I’m convinced that she can take all of Fred’s best qualities and surpass him (and Dawes, and Ashford, and Marco), and that will be very satisfying to watch.

Cosmo interview
Tell us Macarena, who is Barbara? She's a very chill person, she has an exceptional sense of humor that surprised me since we met, also she has a lot of swag and style and that's something i really appreciate. I like that she's very transparent
Barbara, who is Macarena? A person that really knows what she wants. She's always creating conections with people in general and with her family, organizing everything to hold on to them. She's very smart, sensitive and so beautiful
Macarena, what would yo like to see on Valentina's life? For her to not need approbation from others
And you Barbara, what would you like for Juliana? For her to fulfill her dreams and show everyone that all that matters is believing in yourself to get what you want
Macarena, what's a normal day without cameras? So normal. Generally i'd wake up early in the morning, even if i don't like it very much, but as i travel a lot i have to. I do excercise every day because i realized that it really grounds me; it's not to look good but to feel good, i like to be strong. I always try to give myself a moment during the day to talk to someone i love, maybe a friend or family, i like human contact and i try to do it everyday. I do everything in my power to work and then go to dance or have a cup of wine, or to a music festival or travel... everything that's living life it's very important, because we never know when will be our last day.
And you Barbara, what's a normal day without cameras? I love to spend time with my family and i try to cherish my friendships, so i go from place to place around the city to give everyone a little bit of my time. I love music, it gives me the chance to imagine a lot of stuff. I like to even go eat by myself, is one of the things that i enjoy the most in my free time.
Macarena, what do you admire about Barbara? A lot of things. I'm a person that really has to concentrate in something, because i can't do a lot of things at the same time, and she has that ability to be present here, make laugh the person in front of her and say hi to another person without forgeting that she's working. She does a lot of things at the same time, and all of them are well done, i admire that so much.
Barbi, what do you admire about Maca?
I admire her honesty, how transparent and clear she is about what she wants and her way to do that, because it's easy to get things cheating in this business, but she knows how to get what she wants, while me, i'm a little more scared about going for it. That's something i need to learn.
What did Maca feel when Valentina came out?
I think that's the scene where she really is aware of what she's going through. When she tells her brother it's the first time she says it out loud, because she hasn't even shared it with Juliana yet. She can finally express how much in love she's with a girl without knowing what she's gonna do next or what everyone will think, which desicions to make or how to react.
We did that scene in one take and the guy i did it with is Barbara's boyfriend, he's my brother in the story, so it was nice because i was talking to him about her real life girlfriend. It was a very tender moment, very moving and we both lived that nervousness and really teared up, we lived it on the flesh, we connected. Valentina felt free and a lot of clarity; the tricky thing is that the world ask us to label something that we're not even sure about, it's so unfair because everyone has the right to not know. For the first time she did it without the obligation of thinking before she spoke and that's when she asks herself, "did that really went out of my mouth?" she was thankful for being able to feel so free at last.
And what did Barbara feel when Juliana came out?
I felt so relieved; the situation was a lot more complicated with Juliana because she didn't have that much family or knowledge about her surroundings, for her it was very difficult to talk to someone... how do you come out in that situation? i felt really proud as Barbara, you need great courage to do something like that when you know you don't have those loving arms to protect you at the end, because it's only your mom and you, and it's very possible that she wont accept you. Juliana felt like that woman that she wanted to be, that woman that was trapped and couldn't come out and there's nothing more beautiful than that kind of freedom.
What makes you different from your characters?
B: the maturity and a bunch of things that now, as Barbara. i can understand and that Juliana still have to live through, but i identify a lot with her.
M: the same.
what's the biggest change in your acting for both of you?
M: i think everyone struggles with saying "no". We are taught since very little to never dismiss any oportunity even when you don't agree with what you're doing, we have to please everyone, and since i've met Barbara i've seen that clarity in her, about what she wants to do and move foward, she has this sweetness and capacity to say and execute things, that in a way empowers her because now she's always sure of what she wants. We were saying minutes ago, there's no place for half truths and not being transparent, life it's already so complicated for us to be pretending something we're not, so i think that's the most significative change. I know that for her this is really important.
B: I don't know, i thought more about our relationship, now we have a lot of trust in each other... now she's a lot more open with me.
Where do you want to direct your careers?
B: i'm not sure. Personally i look foward to challenge myself every day and do the things that i'm more afraid of, i love that... for now that'd be my dream.
M: I've never liked to set limits for myself, i always say that our imagination it's so little compared to the universe, what i look in my own career is to be able to follow my intuiton, that's the reason that brought me here. i want to be able to really feel my projects, to say yes "if i feel it" even if everyone else is saying "do this instead", We have to be a little cold blooded -in a good way-, have that kind of serenity and ask myself "what do i really want?", and keep having that priviledge of choosing where i'm going.
For both of you, what is love?
M: Love is to be present *very tricky translation btw*
B: Love is to put you on a test, is loving on good or bad times, is fighting and changing over time.
What do you look for in that special person to know you're in love and feel fully happy?
M: Hijo! *express surprise* i think we are wrong since the thought that the other person has the responsibility to make us happy, because i think that the first person that you've to fall in love with is yourself. If you let that be someone else’s responsibility, i'd hit you hard, because the day you stop being happy, then what? are you going to blame the other? For starters, i think you have to be responsable for yourself before you engage in a relationship with someone else and build a team. I always say, the “other half” thing i dont get it, i think we're both full oranges that complement each other. But first you have to be okay with yourself, because if you aren't, thet it gets really complicated.
B: i think being in love all the time doesnt exist, it's imposible, then for me love is just that. You're not always going to be 100 percent with that person but you still know they will be there for you, It's loving them like they're and them loving you like you're and pushing for a better version of yourselves.
How do you prepare for your roles?
B: As an actor you have a set of tips or skills, like writting, imagine about that person and in my case, i tought "what do i want to do now?" I know the character is written but besides that, i want to discover what i want to put from me in it. It's very difficult for me to describe, i feel that in the moment we're recording i'm really in their shoes, their life, and that's the moment when the magic starts.
M: When you find the place for you in the universe and understand your own human relationships that exist around you, your family and your fictional loved one, it gives you a lot of perspective. I mean, what the other person thinks and what they feel always affects you.
We broke it down lots of times, do you remember? The firsts episodes were really complex, beacuse a lot was happening. untill we kind of found our own flow. We broke down all the episodes and that's when we knew where the climax was coming and we build the story backwards with that knowledge, which made the process very interesting.
What does ir means for you to be representatives of the LGBT community?
B: It's an honor. I think that in life we have to do important statements, what you're pasionate about you have to take it beyond and do good for the world. I know this story has been so important for so many people and they put their trust in us, so definitely it's a great honor.
M: I think it brings sense to it all. I have a lot of ideals and most of the time it's hard to know how to approach them witout jugdement from outsiders; with this it all made sense, i found a way to support genuine people and it was a team effort, so to speak. It's okay not to be sure, it's okay if you regret it, it's okay to ask for forgiveness, things that are so simple but yet so hard.
I was saying earlier, for me this mesage was important because this are things i really belive in and are values that i have thet i want to shere with people out there. Our responsibility as spokespersons is not only with the LGBT community but with all the women out there fighting for their rights. It's very important to raise our voices, it doesn't matter if you define yourself or not.
B: i agree and also the important thing it's give support from the heterosexual side, no?
Someone close to you had a not expected reaction to your roles?
M: it's amazing the love this generated, you realize the need for comunication and acceptance, because every single one of us belongs to a minority. We just want to say, let's love each other!
Any woman has stopped to say pick up lines to you?
M: yeah and it's amazing, i'm very impressed, they even asked us to marry them!
B: That's the biggest accomplishment, Yeah it has happened, they didn0t sto us to say pick up lines, but yeah they have done that, they're very respectful
According to Juliana and Valentina, where does the strength of a woman resides?
B: in believing in yourself, because anything can happen if you belive, it's true.
M: Yeah and Barbara and Macarena also think the same. Also live with intention and not with expectations, because you can get very disappointed and that's not the case. Dreams are built not fulfilled.
At last, what resposibility does the media have with these kind of roles?
B: just to portray it as it is, we have to see things as they are and talk about them as we normally talk to each other. It's just another love story, with no labels.
M: its pretty amazing the message that's geting out there but the responsibility is mutual, because we can't share this without your help, or the producer or the writer. We are just the face and voice but behind - and also foward- there's a bunch of people. We have to thank you for this space because that's what makes the difference.
What does it means for you to do COSMO?
B: the triumph of love, no matter the gender
M: this is the triumph of the Juliantinas! of us, the team, because we also believe in this.
PSA: Maca is very tricky to translate, she speaks in riddles, even in spanish haha, if something doesn't make sense point it out, just did this at work trying to not get caught by my boss.
PSA2: Corrected a lot of stuff and also there was a first part of the interview that i added.

Obikin Week 1 - Darkness Calling
Summary: Obi-Wan picks up a strange but rich passenger in an attempt to pay off his debt to the Hutts, and gets much more than he bargained for.
A/N: Somewhat late, but I’ve been having to do fic at work while my home internet is broken (ssshhh, don’t tell my boss haha). This is for Obikin Week 2018, for the day one prompt “Never Found AU”. This is a quick idea for an AU where neither Anakin or Obi-Wan were found by the Jedi, and end up on very different paths...
The boy is strange; young, but self-assured, oozing confidence in a way Obi-Wan rarely sees even in those twice his age. He lounges across his chair, a drink cradled in one hand, and smiles at Obi-Wan through the dim light.
Obi-Wan feels a thrill of unease run through him.
"You can accommodate my request, then?" he asks, his voice low and smooth.
Obi-Wan nods. "So long as none of the terms have changed."
"They haven't."
"Then we have a deal."
A slow smile spreads across the young man's face. "Good."
There's a moment of tense silence, and Obi-Wan sips his drink, waiting for his companion to break it. When he doesn't, Obi-Wan asks carefully, "Will you give me a name, now we're doing business?"
"It's Anakin," the young man says.
/
Obi-Wan can't say he's happy  about the job; but he needs it, needs it desperately, so he doesn't really have much choice. Part of him is sure that's why Anakin approached him in particular; with a few whispers in the right ears, someone with half a brain could easily learn who owed a big enough debt to the Hutts that they'd be desperate enough to take Anakin's dubious job offer.
"Getting into this much debt was incredibly stupid," Obi-Wan says aloud, sitting in the Night Cat's cockpit.
If BT-9 had eyebrows, she would have been lifting one. "Did that realisation just come to you?"
"Ha ha, BT." Obi-Wan sighs, putting his face in his hands. "Have you received the coordinates yet?"
"Not yet. You should remind our passenger that we can't schedule a flight plan without them - and without a flight plan, we can't take off."
"I'm sure he knows," Obi-Wan says; still, he gets up and goes aft.
The Night Cat isn't a large ship, especially not in her crew quarters. Obi-Wan has optimised her to carry as much cargo as he can cram into the extended hold, and as a result the crew lounge, galley and cabin are incredibly small. There is only one bed, which Obi-Wan has given up for his passenger, settling for the thin, lumpy lounge sofa.
Anakin is sitting at the lounge table, scrolling through a datapad; he glances up when Obi-Wan walks into the room. "Problem?"
"Well, we've come to the somewhat sticky part of our little venture," Obi-Wan says, "We need to register a flight plan with space traffic control; consequently, we need a destination."
Anakin's mouth twists. "I'm afraid I can't have anyone following us."
Obi-Wan doesn't need any more than that to understand. A small pit of cold worry forms in his stomach, but he only says, "You need me to spoof the plan?"
Anakin smiles. "You've done it before."
"I work for the Hutts; it's not always entirely legitimate." Obi-Wan pauses, then ventures, "If you give me an idea what quadrant we're really going to, I could pick a false destination on the opposite side of the galaxy. Throw our pursuers off the scent, so to speak."
Anakin's smile grows a little wider. "I don't see the harm in that," he says. "We'll be heading to a planet in the galactic north-east."
Finally some information, even if only the tiniest sliver. "I'll log a flightplan to Bespin, then," Obi-Wan jokes, "Presuming you want to leave right away?"
"In three hours," Anakin says, "There's still one more contact I need to meet with; then we can be on our way."
"He's creepy," BT-9 says when Obi-Wan returns to the cockpit.
"You shouldn't pass judgements on people so quickly, BT," Obi-Wan says, sitting down in the pilot's chair.
"I know creepy when I see it," BT-9 huffs, turning to the ship's computer. Reluctantly she adds, "Logging a flightplan for Bespin, to leave in three hours."
/
Obi-Wan takes the Night Cat through a short jump first, making it look as if they're headed to Bespin; then he calls Anakin up to the cockpit.
"Something tells me you still don't want to give away our destination," he says as his passenger enters.
Anakin smiles; Obi-Wan would say he looks pleased. "You would be correct."
"I don't usually let anyone but BT touch our navicomputer, you know."
"I feel priviledged," Anakin smirks.
Everything in Obi-Wan's gut is screaming at him that this is a horrible idea, but the price tag of this job keeps flashing before his eyes. With that much money, he can pay off his entire debt to the Hutts in one hit, and still have something to spare. He motions for BT-9 to move away from the navicomputer.
She beeps and hums with irritation, but obligingly scoots away from the console, leaving the space free for Anakin to step up. "I promised you wouldn't be in direct danger, so long as you follow my instructions," he says as he sits down in front of it, "And I want to reconfirm that commitment."
"That's comforting," Obi-Wan says, watching Anakin's fingers begin to tap in a destination. "You're not going to read the coordinates off your datapad?"
Anakin smiles. "I could recite these coordinates asleep, drunk, beaten to hell..."
Obi-Wan snorts. "I get the picture."
The cockpit falls quiet for a minute as Anakin taps in more numbers, checks them over, and then hits enter on the console. "You should be good to go," he says, standing.
BT-9 jealously zips back into her place as soon as Anakin vacates it, which he allows with an amused grin. Cautiously, Obi-Wan turns to the controls. "Prepare for lightspeed," he tells BT-9. She hums a confirmation.
The navicomputer flashes up an estimated time of arrival, but doesn't show any information on planets at their destination point. Obi-Wan can only assume that wherever Anakin's aiming to go, it's not on your average galactic star chart.
Another shot of nerves twists through his stomach, but he pushes the joystick forward anyway, thrusting them into lightspeed.
/
Soon after he sets up the navicomputer, Anakin disappears into the lone crew cabin, leaving Obi-Wan with his thoughts.  It should take less than twelve hours for them to reach their destination - enough time to catch some sleep, have a meal, and prepare himself for whatever mystery lies ahead.
Blasters, Obi-Wan thinks, I’m going to take lots of blasters.
BT-9 whistles softly as he makes to leave the cockpit. "I'm going to try and figure out where we're going," she says.
He won't be able to stop her, so Obi-Wan just shrugs. "Go ahead."
Back in the crew lounge, everything is quiet, so Obi-Wan lies down on the lounge bench seat and tries to get comfortable. He's slept in alleyways, on street corners, in cargo holds, and just straight on the cold hard ground, so compared to that, this is luxury; but compared to his bed in the other room, it's cramped and lumpy.
Obi-Wan lies back and closes his eyes, willing himself not to feel the bumps sticking into his back. Thoughts swirl round his head and nerves churn in his gut, but he does his hardest to ignore those too. Keep focusing on the paycheck, Kenobi; that's why you're doing this.
He must have dropped off at some point, because when he comes to the ship's lights have been dimmed, probably a result of BT-9 putting her into night cycle. He checks the chrono on his wrist; about eight hours have passed. Good.
He potters around for a while, preparing a mealpack and eating it, hearing nothing from the crew cabin. Anakin is probably asleep.
After his meal he goes down into the cargo bay - depressingly empty at the moment - and over to the back wall, where a tall, locked cabinet of reinforced steel serves as his makeshift armoury. Inside, two rifles and several blasters compete for space with bags of grenades, flashbangs and smoke bombs, along with the huge Thrassian harpoon he got half off in a sale on Outlander Station three months ago. "That seemed like a much better deal at the time," Obi-Wan mutters to himself, removing it from the cabinet and setting it aside.
He slings one of the rifles over his back, straps two blasters to his hips and loads up with as many explosive devices as he can carry, then returns upstairs to the cockpit.
"We're nearing our destination," BT-9 informs him.
"So soon?" Obi-Wan asks, dropping down into the pilot's chair.
"Yes." If droids could scowl, BT-9 would be giving him a most ferocious glare. "If we crash into a planet, I'm blaming you."
"If we crash into a planet you won't have time to blame me; you'll just be space dust."
The opening cockpit door cuts off BT-9's sharp reply. "We must be close," Anakin says, slipping into the small space behind Obi-Wan's chair.
"We're coming up on our destination now." Even as he says it the navicomputer begins to beep, signalling that they're about to be automatically dropped from hyperspace.
Obi-Wan feels the familiar lurch-tug in his stomach, and the viewport displays the disorienting view of the starlines pinging back into their proper places as the ship slows down - and Obi-Wan spots their destination.
The planet hangs directly in front of them, a dusty red-orange ball, and to Obi-Wan's eye, completely unremarkable. It looks like it has a fifty/fifty chance of being habitable, though by its colour, it's probably a miserable dust bucket if it does have a breathable atmosphere. The reason why it might be important to the mysterious man behind him is not immediately apparent.
"This it?" he asks.
"This is it," Anakin breathes.
He sounds...reverent.
Obi-Wan feels a shiver go up his spine, but he suppresses it again. "Has it got a breathable atmosphere?"
"Yes." Anakin leans forward over Obi-Wan's shoulder, staring fixedly at the planet in the viewport. The look in his eyes makes something in Obi-Wan's stomach curdle. "Take us down there."
He can feel his fingers cringe away from the controls; but he forces the reaction down, forces down the sickness in his stomach, and brings them in closer to the planet.
They swoop in uncontested, no challenge from space traffic control or any other authority; when BT-9 scans the planet for communication signals she finds nothing, and a scan for lifeforms reveals very few.
"I'm surprised you've asked so few questions," Anakin says as they move closer to the planet's surface.
"A smart man knows when to keep his mouth shut," Obi-Wan says, quoting his father's favourite addage. Even now it makes him feel a twinge of nostalgia.
It makes Anakin laugh. "Land at these coordinates," he says, handing Obi-Wan a piece of flimsi; and then he disappears aft again.
"I don't need to tell you what I think," BT-9 mutters.
"That we should turn back?"
Her silence is answer enough.
Obi-Wan hesitates for just a second; but he knows what Jabba does to debtors who can't pay. He plugs the coordinates into the computer, and the Night Cat sets a course for him to follow.
The coordinates Anakin gave him lead to signs of civilisation. A small town carved from the rock; square, blocky buildings, and several lumps of concrete shaped like upturned bowls - long-abandoned hangars, designed to protect ships from the elements. The natural surface of the planet is uneven, rock-strewn and crisscrossed with cracks and holes, so Obi-Wan decides the hangars will be safer, no matter how ramshackle they are. He lowers the Night Cat down into the hangar entrance.
Anakin doesn't reappear until Obi-Wan has landed, powered down the engine, locked the controls and gone aft to the top of the ship's ramp. He's about to press the opening button when Anakin is suddenly beside him, silent, his stare intense. Obi-Wan tries to cover his startle with a question. "You are armed, aren't you?" he asks, his hand hesitating on the operating mechanism.
Anakin just nods, his eyes locked on Obi-Wan's hand. It's somewhat disturbing; uncomfortable, Obi-Wan depresses the button.
The air that rushes in from the opening door is stale and thick with dust. Obi-Wan grabs his dust scarf from the rack above the door and wraps it around his face, then eyes Anakin, who has started walking down the ramp while it's still descending. He presses the comm button to the cockpit and says, "Be on your guard, BT."
"Always, master," BT-9 replies.
With his fears only somewhat mollified, Obi-Wan follows Anakin down the ramp.
Outside, the air is close and still. The silence is absolute, not even broken by the sound of wind. The walls of the hangar rise above them, cracked, paint-peeling, dull permacrete. Empty crates and other random detritus litter the floor; a door stands half-open in one wall, leading into darkness.
Anakin is standing stock-still, eyes closed, just breathing in and out. Obi-Wan stands next to him, shifting awkwardly from foot to foot, wondering. Where the hell are they?
Eventually Anakin opens his eyes, and locks his gaze on the half-open door. "You've served your purpose," he tells Obi-Wan, then lifts his arm and taps on his wrist comm. "Your payment should have just transferred. You can go now, if you wish."
Obi-Wan blinks. "Then how will you get off the planet?"
Anakin just turns a smug, self-satisfied smile on him. "I have my ways."
They stand there silently for a few seconds, staring at each other. Obi-Wan doesn't know what makes him ask it, but he says, "And if I don't wish to leave?"
The corner of Anakin's mouth quirks. "I'm sure some use could be found for you." He nods towards the Night Cat. "You should probably wait on your ship, however. This is not a place for the uninitiated."
The uninitiated into what? Obi-Wan wonders, but Anakin has already turned and walked away, ghosting across the ground and slipping through the half-open hangar doors.
Well then.
All Obi-Wan's senses are saying leave. He has his money; he can pay Jabba back.
But Anakin's words intrigue him. If he paid this much for a job this easy, what might he pay for something more risky? How much might Obi-Wan be able to make?
And there's something more than that; something stirring in him, awakening, calling out in answer to something buried here on this strange planet. He's felt it growing ever since he stepped off the Night Cat's ramp.
This place feels dead; and yet, somehow, it is undeniably alive.
"This is stupid; absolutely non-sensical," Obi-Wan says to himself, shaking his head and turning to climb the ramp of the ship. He has what he came for; there's no need for more danger.
And yet his hand hesitates over the ramp button. He's always been curious, and now it's manifesting at the worst possible time, like a siren call trying to lead him back down the ramp and further into the strange mystery of this place.
"It's not worth it," he whispers to himself, but something deep inside whispers back, Oh, but it is. It is.
He hears BT-9 say something over the comms, but he ignores her; almost without thinking about it, his feet walk him back down the Night Cat's ramp.
/
The other hangars are all as empty as the one they landed in; the buildings have the look and smell of a town long abandoned, the miscellaneous goods left in dark corners so rotted and fallen apart as to be unrecognisable. Clearly many people once lived here; but there hasn't been anyone here for a long, long time.
There's no sign of Anakin.
Obi-Wan wanders through the deserted streets, peering into buildings, hand on the blaster at his waist. The streets are mostly enclosed on all sides, with only rare breaks to the air; the sky above is a poisonous yellow-orange, with small clouds scudding lazily across.
He searches without really knowing what he's looking for, finding old residential homes, shops, cantinas, but nothing to explain the curiosity, the calling he can feel like an itch under his skin.
Then he finds the doors; and outside, a long path of red rock, worn smooth under the passing of many feet.
The abandoned city sits atop one tall mesa; the path runs along the top of a ridge of rock, a natural formation linking one mesa to another. On the mesa opposite, Obi-Wan can see structures; a huge building that reminds him both of a temple and a fortress.
The path leads up to a set of massive, beautifully carved gates - and the gates lead inside the temple-fortress.
Without conscious decision, Obi-Wan lets his feet draw him along the path, down to the gates.
Invisible from a distance, when Obi-Wan gets close he can see that the gates stand a little open, just enough for someone to squeeze through. A burst of nerves spark in his gut when he touches the metal of the gate, but he can't stop now. Pushing through, he enters a dark passage.
The room it opens out onto is tall and dark and echoing. Some kind of audience chamber, or a main hall, illuminated by small shafts punctured through the thick rock, letting in weak sunlight from above. In the dim light, Obi-Wan can see many passages leading out of the room, away into shadows. The largest, directly opposite the passage he entered through, is the only one showing any sign of light, so he goes that way.
This corridor leads to another set of doors, through which Obi-Wan finds himself under the sky again. He knows this is the right path as soon as he steps onto it. The calling grows louder the further he steps along the path, growing until it feels like a physical ache in his chest. The passage he's in winds and curls under tall cliffs, punching straight through the rock, until it suddenly opens out.
He finds himself looking out over a wide valley, shaped as if someone had taken a rectangular chunk out of the edge of the mesa. On all sides, huge statues tower above him, shaped like humans swathed in robes, their hands clasped around the hilts of what might be vibroswords, their heads bowed as if praying. Tall carved plinths and columns, some collapsed or broken, litter the landscape around the statues' feet. In the distance, Obi-Wan can see stone ramps leading to dark openings in the valley's walls.
He knows it instantly. Years ago he'd taken a date to some carnival attraction, where they'd been shown "The Most Frightful Planets In The Galaxy". This had been one of them - he'd know those statues anywhere.
This is the Valley of the Dark Lords.
This is Korriban.
Hands land on his shoulders and tighten like steel vices. "I did say I might have some use for you," Anakin's voice breathes in his ear. "And now here you are. It was more than reckless curiosity that led you here, I'll bet."
Obi-Wan opens his mouth, but nothing comes out.
Back in the stupid carnival show, Korriban had seemed nothing more than a spooky story, the home of old ghosts and ancient evil, long lost to history.
Now, standing here with the Valley of the Dark Lords spread before him, real and in the flesh, it doesn't seem so funny.
"You see that opening there?" Anakin whispers, his breath brushing Obi-Wan's ear. A hand on his cheek turns Obi-Wan's head to the left, where he can see one of the dark openings he noticed before. "That's the tomb of Ajunta Pall. Incredible things are said to lie within." He can almost hear Anakin smile. "Perhaps you'd like to come tomb-raiding with me?"
There's no possible way he can say yes. This is madness. He should have run the second he recognised where he was.
But that call is still there inside him, a fire of curious longing that he can't suppress. "What's in there?" he asks, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Dreams," Anakin whispers, "And power."
Obi-Wan should not say yes.
Then again, he shouldn't have said yes at the beginning - but he did. He's here now.
It's calling to him. He has to know what's in that tomb.
"I'll come."
Anakin lets out a soft, breathy laugh. "How lucky I am," he murmurs, "that the Jedi didn't find you first."

Car insurance for family car?
My mum is learning to drive and my dad got her a small Vauxhall Corsa and the idea was to insure me on the car so I have access to it should I need it. The quote just come in at 1300 ish and well for a car I may or may not be driving that much I am not going to pay it. On my own if I owned the same car I have found insurance of around 700 which is more acceptable. The problem is I don't own the car and my dad is insured on it and my mum is insured on it as a learner, but could I then insure myself on that same car separately? Naturally I'd have to tell them who owns the car but other than that? The main problem is I'm 21, have not driven in three years since passing my test (due to insurance funnily enough) and a student, which is a potent mix for insurance companies ripping you off as much as possible.""

""Why do women get cheaper car insurance, that's stupid and totally discriminatory and plain our racist?""
In Europe the European courts have already ruled it unfair. google Cheaper insurance for women ruled unfair Wtf? Women are horrible drivers. I've only been in one accident my entire life of driving and it wasn't my fault, a WOMAN backed into me as I was passing a parking lot. Apparently that wasn't the first time she did that either. One other time a WOMAN almost crashed into me on the free way, she wanted to get into my lane but apparently she didn't see me and just without using a turn signal just decided to turn into my lane and luckily i was paying attention and was able to break soon enough and she probably came within inches of her back side smashing into my side. it caused me to break suddenly which made the car behind me break suddenly and honk his horn, i honked my horn and the lady in front of me was apparently clueless to the world. Anyways the reason if this is true because I don't believe it men might have more accidents is because they're more likely to become drunk. Men drink and drive more, not only that but they probably like to show off more. rates should be higher for people like them, not all men. Gender biases are unconstitutional because that's prejudice. Also it's a total lie that women make less money than men. when i waited tables, the women got all the good tips from men. while i generally just got the minimum tip. not only that but sometimes if i was dealing with another male, sometimes they didn't give me a tip at all especially if they were drunk or some scruffy looking truck driver trying to hit on the other girls. But if one of those hot girls waited on them, they would sometimes give them a tip that was more than the food that they ordered! I think it's all bs. and of course completely racist. Why does america allow this? You know in some countries they don't allow women to drive. MAYBE it's because they're bad drivers!!!""

""Car insurance question. Help desperately needed, please!?""
Here's the situation. Before I start here, I will say I have never sold a car/transferred insurance in my life until now (I'm 37) and I'm panicking. (Please don't laugh; I am somewhat mentally disabled and have a hard time understanding business side of things). Please bear with me: I have a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu with 178,000 miles on it. Last Friday, my husband's brother decided to give his 2005 Hyundai Elantra (53,000 miles) to us as a free gift. We decided to sell the Malibu to some friends of ours (with whom we have been friends for quite a few years). My friends have already paid us and they have a Bill of Sale and next week we are getting a duplicate of the Chevy title in the mail (because we lost ours), at which time we will transfer. Here is where the confusion begins: My mother-in-law (who is a retired State Farm insurance agent) drew up a Bill of Sale that indicated as its last sentence at the end, Buyer will show proof of liability insurance at the time the car is received (or something like that; I don't have the Bill of Sale in front of me). We saw our friends today to get the Bill of Sale notarized (they already paid for the car; we're just waiting for the title for the Malibu to arrive via mail, as mentioned above). Their insurance agent is about 90 miles away, I find out, and will need pictures of the car. Our friends insist that my mother-in-law is just being a mom since we're new at such a transaction (our friends have owned and sold boats, cars, etc., so they are experienced at this, too), meaning that she's being overcautious by saying they need to present proof of liability insurance at the exact time I give them the keys to the car. So, once I give them the title and the keys, are they responsible for when they get the car insurance? My Hyundai is covered through my insurance agent (my mother-in-law called them and got coverage on it already), but she insists that I am not to get insurance verification on the Hyundai until the friends show proof of their insurance on the Malibu after they get possession of it. Is that correct, or is my mother-in-law just being overcautious? (I would think that once I switch the Malibu title to my friends' name and give them the keys, that would relieve me of any responsibility any longer to the Malibu). Help me, please. I am so confused; I have my mother-in-law telling me one thing, and my friends telling me another. Both sound correct. So would I be right if I did these (in this exact order): 1) switch the title over to their name & give them the keys to the Malibu. 2) call my insurance agent and report that I sold my Malibu, and ask them to type insurance vertification for the Hyundai. (would I have to be present in person for them to type the verification for the Hyundai? Also, would my report of me selling the Malibu mean that they would cancel the insurance on it immediately?) I am sorry this is so lengthy; I tried to explain this the best as I could. I just want to do what is correct in the eyes of the law.""
Why has my car insurance gone up?
My question is about my car insurance renewal quote. I got my renewal quote from esure, last year I paid 357 with 7 years no claim discount, and with full uk licence held for just under 4 years. In whole year I haven't made any claim, same car, same address, still the new quote I got is 627. I am almost shocked. Last year also I had same problem, my renewal quote was about 40-50 pounds higher. I checked for new quote with different insurers but not getting anything cheaper than 460, still way above what I paid last year. Does anyone know why does it go up? I remember last time when I spoke to call centre guy, he told me that it depends on number of claims in your area etc. Is that true? Also somewhere I read the article that insurance companies are paying more than what they collect as a premium and they are raising premiums by up to 20% but still in my case the premium is almost double. If anyone has any knowledge on how this industry works please let me know. Any help is appreciated. Thanks""
""Families who live in America, how much is your health insurance per month?""
In an earlier question I mentioned that my boyfriend's parents are paying for his 24-year-old sister's health insurance after she got laid off and couldn't find another position and can't afford health care on her own, to the tune of $175 a month (and she's perfectly healthy) and was floored when someone said that was actually inexpensive. Btw, her parents insist on her having health care coverage for fear of her getting in an accident or whatever. I'm 17 and am quite obviously naive about the costs of health insurance, but I'm really curious about it, and would like to know how much it usually costs for a family to have health insurance in America. I'm in California. I don't know if it's more expensive depending on your state. If if you don't mind answering, how much do you pay per year, and how many people are in your family? Does it become more expensive as your kids get older? What kind of plan do you have? Through work or your own? Are you supportive of universal health coverage? Also: does anyone understand how Medicare / MediCal works and who decides who is covered and who isn't? Is it based on your yearly income? I'm asking because one of the reasons my boyfriend's parents want his sister to have insurance is that another family friend of ours broke her jaw in a roller blading accident when she was 26 and didn't have insurance because she was unemployed at the time, and not being able to pay the $15,000 hospital bill killed her credit score. Sorry for all the questions. I'm just really curious about all this.""

How do you try to buy or bid on totaled vehicles by car insurance companies?
Im interested in trying to find a vehicle like mine, but wrecked with a good engine and transmission and any other parts I can salvage to keep mine alive for a few more years . I would like to know in general how to search and bid on wrecked vehicles that have been totaled by insurance companies and are now up for bid. This would be kind of like what a wrecking yard must do to purchase vehicles for parts resale, or a used car dealer that would in turn repair the vehicle and resell with salvage title. Any leads on where to start would be appreciated""
Car Rental Insurance?
What happens if you rent a car and decline any coverage? I was told that if you were involed in an accident you would have to make a claim with your own insurance company. What if you don't own a car and thus don't have an insurance company? Are there limits to the amount of responsibility of the renter? I mean if the car is totaled does the renter really have to replace the entire cost of the car out of his pocket as well as damage to the other car and injury to it's occupants? I know i'm not alone in declining insurance. But if I got into an accident I always assumed I would just be responsible for a deductable and not the total amout of damage to the cars and injuries. Serious answers only. I really don't need to hear yes, you need insurance or you're screwed That tells me nothing.""

Will My Car Insurance Go Up?
I was Driving down a road going about 35-40 mph. ( Speed Limit was 45 mph ) I was going straight, and this woman coming the opposite direction decides to turn into a cut out, that goes into a shopping center, and as she turns in to the cut out she just keeps going, out into the street I slam as hard as I could, on my brakes but I still hit her, I hit her on the passengers side in between the 2 doors. There were 2 witnesses that I have never seen before in my life that witnessed it. I have back, and neck problems had someone call an ambulance because the pain was a lot worse. They took a CT SCAN and said nothing was wrong. My Neck and back is still hurting me a lot more, from the accident, I have too wear a sling on my left arm / shoulder because of the force of the seat belt. My nose is swollen do to the impact of the air bags, also affected my neck, and head pain. I have marks on my right arm, and stomach from this. Now the air bag deployed in my truck, and all of the air bags deployed in her car. My Truck looks like it will probably be totaled the bumper is ruined, the hood is ruined, the headlight is broken, The door I had to practically pry open because it was stuck, Smoke started coming out of the truck headlight broken Paint, I think the radiator broke, etc.... etc... Both Vehicles had to be towed away. I have good insurance on our cars, but since this isn't my fault the other woman's insurance will have to pay my medical bills, and to fix my truck, or give me blue book value on it right? I am 20 years old, I live in Las Vegas, Nevada. My insurance is Allstate, and the Other Woman's insurance is allstate also. I will be getting a lawyer.""

Why do so many people complain about Health Care and not as much Car Insurance?
Why do people complain about the health insurance system when the car insurance companies rip people off just as much as they do?? Where are all the protesters? Most people act like the car insurance companies are doing you a favor when they are really not. They try to use unrealistic worse case scenarios to SCARE you into buying an expensive full coverage plan you do NOT need. They prey on your fears. So how come nobody questions the practices of Auto Insurance companies like they question the health care providers?

25 & More Life
Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays!
Tumblr media
I took a break from writing over the holidays and to prepare myself for this move in a couple weeks and my vacation next week. While boxing up my things and reminiscing about the memories I’ve made in my first apartment,  I was inspired to write today’s blog.
With the new year comes many thoughts, resolutions, habits, and promises to yourself and those around you. Some want to lose weight, some want to find love, and others may want to find themselves. What're some things that you have set out to do this year? What are your resolutions? Personally, I am not one to make a plethora of resolutions I know I’m not going to keep, but I do like to make promises to myself. Being that I am a writer and a visual person, I love to write out the things that I vow to myself. For me, nothing will motivate me more than a physical list of things to do that I am able to confidently cross things off of.
Let’s get into it, shall we?
Tumblr media
I Promise...
...to keep making my voice heard. I’m black first baby.
Malcolm said it best: “I’m black first—my sympathies are black, my allegiance is black, my whole objectives are black. ...I’m not interested in being American, because America has never been interested in me.” I cannot and will not be silenced by people and their beliefs that seek to keep me and others like me oppressed. Though the world seeks to destroy every part of my blackness, I have to make it my duty to stand firm for the things that I believe in. You’ll see this black skin and watch in awe.  You’ll see this black priviledge and RESPECT IT. You’ll either hear these words and accept them with open arms as they consume you and change your colonized way of thinking OR you’ll swallow them in disdain like a shot of Jack straight at room temperature.
...to never stop learning
Ben Frank said: “we are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid.” I love learning new things. I love taking my view of a situation  and seeing it from a new perspective. Lately, I’ve felt very stagnant in life and felt as though this meant that I wasn’t learning, and I let the moronic monotany of day to day life was in fact make me feel less intelligent. This year, I promise to NEVER STOP LEARNING. It’s my duty to open my eyes and ears to the world; research and study the things that I am interested in. Become well versed in issues and topics that are important and not just idiocy. The transition from being a student in college to a student of the real world has not been easy, but then again, when has life ever been easy? Class is in session.
...to forgive myself
This one’s going to be tough. As I’ve said before, I’m my loudest critic and my worst enemy. Even so, I have to remember that I am human and the mistakes I make are merely lessons to be learned (even the ones that seem to happen repeatedly). I have to forgive myself for not being perfect and give myself time. Time to grow, time to learn, and time to figure out what it is that I am here for. I have to silence the myriad of negative thoughts that never stop on the hamster wheel that is my brain. I AM good enough and I am coming for everything that I deserve.
...to continue to hold others accountable
No days off this year. Just like there are outright wrong people, there are just as many latent racists, rapists and bigots out there. It’s time to call them out and bring them to the front of the congregation and “give them the respect they deserve for being stupid,” as Charlamagne would say. Not only that, but I can’t accept excuses for ignorance. It’s 2018 kids, information is literally at your fingertips. There’s NO excuse for you to keep being a sheep and believing in antiquated ideologies just because your granny said so or because no one else ever told you different. Be respectful, be informed, be accepting and be mindful of what you say. If not? Prepare to hear my mouth.
...to hold MYSELF accountable
Of course, I cannot go through life and call everyone else out while hiding my own indiscretions. Any negative things that I say and do can be just as damaging as the next person.  I must hold myself accountable for my own actions as well, and ensure that my words are without contradiction and are not perpetuating the beliefs and societal norms that work against me. I would rather die a hero than to live long enough to see myself become the villain.
...to let go & laugh more
Though I am a free spirit with hipster tendencies, I also have a tendency to be tethered to my fears and anxieties and allow them to keep me from truly soaring like I know I can.  I have to free myself of the people and things that serve no purpose in my life. I am doing myself a disservice by keeping them around. I want to laugh more than I cry this year. Laugh at myself and my mistakes and my bad decisions and not take myself too seriously. I want to make others laugh and bring them joy when they least expect it. I’m mad funny and others should get a taste of that too! Positive vibes only!
...to LIVE MORE LIFE
This past year, my best friend and I took trips we couldn’t afford, ate food that we loved, and made memories that will last a lifetime. I want to keep that same energy this year! I want to continue to eat, pray, and love my way through 2018. I want to live and not just exist; to experience and not just survive. More love, more laughs, more destinations, and MORE LIFE.
...to curate and concentrate on my craft
This one is the most important. I can’t be complacent in my art. I promise that this year I will only elevate and enhance my way with words and find better ways to get them out to a larger audience. I want more consistency and more dedication to doing what I love, which is writing. When I was younger I couldn’t put the pen down, but as I’ve gotten older, less things inspire me to write. That is not going to be my excuse ANYMORE. I am a creator, a writer, and an artist. Not only do I need to make the world hear what I have to say, but I have to keep them interested and keep them listening.
Of course, it’s important to set goals and challenge yourself with every new year, but that is the easy part. Anyone can SAY what they’re going to do, but the hard part comes into play when you have to put in the work. I often find it difficult to put in the work because I am the most critical of myself. Even as I write these blogs every week,  no matter how many people shower me with praises and compliments, I will only hear the negativity. Repeatedly reading and constantly find things that I could have written better. With that being said, I‘ve decided to make these promises to myself; promises that I must keep so that my 2018 will be greater than my 2017. If you read any of these and decide you want to do the same, please feel free to do so! I love knowing that I am making even that smallest of impacts on the lives of others.
Well, what are you waiting for? Ready, Set, GO!
