Something must be in the water because our friends at the Seattle Aquarium were out and about.
One of the keyhole limpets was stretching its shell all the way back to reveal its adorable puppy face, the crescent gunnel was ready to pick a fight and was slithering all over the place, the sea anemones have been as perky as I’ve ever seen them, and the new resident octopus, Queso, was putting on quite the show dancing about her tank changing colors and texture.
Something new I learnt about today is the Seafood Watch guide which can help inform us to make more sustainable decisions when eating fish and other marine life. Something worth checking out.

i think you're allowed to be into gay baby shit as long as you're not annoying and depraved about it. But watch out bc it's a fine line
#like unfortunately i've realized that the OG life is strange is like. incredibly important and meaningful to me but not for any reason that#the general populace would understand. i just like pacific northwest media and it's trying soooo so so hard to be diet twin peaks#dark kind of shitty media that takes place in the PNW is so special to me. this is also why i can never dislike the twilight movies#i don't even live in the PNW but. idk it is mythical to me#anyway my back has hurt all day i feel like a retired dad who groans everytime he gets outta his creaky fucking recliner to get another beer

hi! i’m a recently awakened therian and i’m having some trouble dealing with species dysphoria (some of it is helped by my mask and the tail i have) do you have any tips on dealing with it?
from your local pnw raccoon 🦝
hiya! thanks for the ask! i’d be more than happy to share tips!!
i’m not at all the first person to come up with these tips, but they are things i use as well have heard of others using.
try experimenting with eye shadow! playing around with makeup, especially with raccoons, can help you visually appear similar to your kintype. darker eyeshadow around your eyes and nose can help you have the raccoon mask look without needing to wear an actual mask! plus in some spaces, bold makeup is more socially acceptable than masks.
along with that, you can make or buy headband or clip on ears that resemble raccoon ears, so you can see yourself with ears without needing to wear a mask :)
adjust your diet! now, raccoons are pretty omnivorous so the change doesn’t have to be drastic, but eat foods similarly to what they eat. there’s a family of raccoons that constantly steals from our grape vine. fruits, grain, nuts, invertebrates (think shellfish and insects) and small animals.
some other things i do is nest and have things in my room or nest that either resemble my kintype or what they’d have in a nest.
find clothing that helps you feel connected to your kintype! if you were to think “if a raccoon were a person, what would it wear?” and go from there!
i think nature sounds could help as well! i leave my window open when birds are chirping but there’s also TONS of audios on youtube!
while this isn’t a super extensive list, i hope this helps with your dysphoria!!
sincerely, your local PNW coydog ^^

new seagull buddy complete!
check out my new seagull buddy! I based him on the north American herring gull. Check out his lil pink webbed feeties, and his multi tone wing coloration <3
He is seen with a common staple of the PNW coast herring gull's diet, a piece of pizza stolen from a tourist. He can hold it in his mouth with magnets, otherwise he can save it for later. He weighs about 8 lbs with heavy pellets added to his body yet he remains astonishingly squishable and soft for holding. the perfect lap buddy
Really happy with how he came out. this one was a test of some new skills for me. Gonna try a detailed quadruped next with textured minky. Found a cool company that sends me the leftover scrap fabric from fursuitters so I can have all sorts of fun textures and colors in the tiny fabric cuts that are fine for making small toys vs large clothes.

Ancient Roots: Overview of Food Culture
This is 100% inspired by @bonefall. Credit where credit is due!
A basic overview of this guide:
Why????
Regions
Foods
List of "recipes" and foods
Notes
Why additional food? Aren't cats carnivores??
Yep! Cats are carnivores, however, in a society of cats that can tunnel, use and make tools, medicine, religion, and all that, what is really limiting me from giving them special foods and recipes? In my AU, clan cats (and my fanclan cats) aren't limited to a full meat diet. HOWEVER! MEAT STILL MAKES UP THE MAJORITY OF THEIR DIET TO KEEP SOMEWHAT WITH REAL BIOLOGY.
Clan cats will eat berries and plants for energy, a snack, and for health reasons. They do not eat them for their main source of food, simply as a food supplement. In leaf-fall, when most berries are ripe, they are eaten off the bush, but regardless, some are still brought back to the clan to share and preserve for later use.
Regions
As stated previously, I am only really using plants that can be found here in the Pacific Northwest (PNW in this AU is defined as: British Columbia in Canada; Washington State, Oregon, and Northern California in the United States. All of these regions being referenced are limited to being on the WEST side of the Cascade Mountain Range. Technically, the PNW is larger than is in this AU). These plants may be native or naturalized, and I will generally try my best to keep away from names and plants that are garden-grown (or, in other words, are unlikely to be found in the "wild" that Clans live in).
Foods
In this AU, most foods are dried, but some are cooked either as an alternative or as a way of final preparation.
Cooking is dangerous and was almost never done in the past, but became more common after the move to the lake territories. Clan Cats can't efficiently create fire, so they do try their best to keep flames going (or at the very least, have some coals or embers to create a new flame). Fires are originally created opportunistically (lightning strikes, twoleg fires/camps, and small wildfires) because of the struggle it takes to get a fire started on their own. I don't know how many of you have ever tried to start a fire with two sticks, but it's a pain in the ass for me, with two functioning thumbs. I think it would be much more frustrating for cats with no functioning thumbs. If one clan loses their flames, they may get new ones from a neighboring clan, but it is often traded for rather than freely given.
Foods by clan [recipes and ideas!]
To be added

This is your daily PSA to NOT feed what I create in my MIND to cats. Please. These "recipes" are created for FICTIONAL cats in a FICTIONAL setting, even if they are based on reality. Please. I beg of you. Do not feed your cat fictional food that I, who is NOT a food scientist, have created. I am a marine biology major. I am not a culinary or animal health sciences major. Please, for the love of all that is holy, do not feed your cats what I create.

Well I'm in a creative slump so it's time to refill the tanks -
Anyway I'm looking for some book recs! Ideally they're available on Libby, and I'm open to all genres, POV, style & themes - hell I'm even kind of in the mood for some trash, so feel free to pitch some guilty pleasure reads, I just really need to diversify my literary diet but am awful at setting my own direction lmao
I am particularly* looking for:
Shorter reads
Vampires?
I would really like to check out some stuff set in western Washington state/PNW as a whole
Or Ohio
Anything with a transmasc protagonist or major character would be rad
(*absolutely do not fear pitching a read if it doesn't fit though these are just some current wants)

-20 years old

-A major Film nerd (seriously, drop any movie recommendations you have in my asks)
⚠️!Blog Content Warnings!⚠️
This blog is mainly a repost bin for stuff I find hot. Some of this will include content that some may find upsetting, and while this isn’t a comprehensive list, these are the major ones to be aware of, and let me know if there is anything you think I should add to this list:
Extreme WG
Forced Feminization (mainly in a cis guy way rather than a trans guy way if that makes any sense?)
Pregnancy/Breeding
CNC
Degradation/Humiliation
Forced Feeding
Pig/Cow Play
Remember to engage in kinks and fetishes responsibly, and heres a link that briefly explains different consent & risk awareness models.
Anyways,
⛔️Do Not Interact If:⛔️

You are a TERF or SWERF/Generally Anti-Sexwork
A MAP, Pedo, or anything of that sort
Pro-ana/pro diet culture
📣One more thing📣:
I personally enjoy degradation and teasing a lot, and so I give consent to:
Random messages/Asks/Replies teasing and degrading me about my weight and desire to gain
Being called greedy, a pig, a cow
Light references to health issues (wheezing, mobility issues, lower stamina, etc)
Please don’t bring up in relation to me and my gain:
More severe health issues (heart complications, “clogged arteries”, diabetes, etc)
Hygiene issues
Extreme/Long term slob
Everyone has different boundaries on this stuff, so remember to treat everyones limits with respect, regardless of what they are. If you enjoy the stuff I listed, you’re still welcome to interact with my blog (so long as You’re not on the DNI list), I just ask that you don’t bring it up in relation to me.
🍔Anyways, Happy Gaining!🍰

Stop using 'from the dawn of humanity' when talking abt things like sexism and wealth disparity and, just a lot of things. Start saying 'since the invention of agriculture' since thats when a lot of that shit became the norm
#wealth did not (or almost always did not) exist in pre agriculture cultures#there are some exceptions like in the PNW where some groups were sedentary while being totally foragers#but in almost all forager societies wealth was and is not a thing#and for the most part sexism wasnt rlly a thing either#ppl act like 'men hunt and women are just forced to go gather whatever they find until the men come back with the Real Meal' like#in a lot of forager societies the gathering was most of the diet#this is less the case in colder climates like probably in pleistocene europe#but it wasnt useless or a shameful job#and it wasnt because they thought women too weak to hunt! it was because women were too valuable to the continuation of the group#to risk with a dangerous task like hunting#i cannot stress enough how different life was before agriculture stop lumping them in with those conversations#AND stop using that term to lump all humans together! is this thing youre talking about intrinsic to every human ever?

The classic vampire and werewolf lovestory is always adorable 🥺❤️ BUT ALSO THINK OF THE THE ENEMIES TO LOVERS POTENTIAL!!!!
Ooo this is interesting. Vampire!reader like, "Twilight got one thing right, the near-constant cloud cover and rain in the PNW is better than the sun. Plus no one looks at you weird when you tell them you're on an organic, all-liquid diet…." She'd probably meet Jake and be like, "What is that wet dog smell???
I don't really have a vision for this story except for some vauge concepts and tropes. I mostly want the reader thrust into the unknown world of wolves and their protocols and maybe Jake having to claim her to protect her.
Damsel in distress mixed in with some snark and over protective Jake.

Okay so this will be long because i get very very excited because BIRDS. enjoy my infodump lol (this will also be a post just covering the basics about barred owls, i can get more in depth in another post if you guys want)
Today's bird is the barred owl! Barred owls are true owls, one of the two groups of owls, being the true owls and barn owls. The largest distinction between true owls and barn owls is the facial disc. True owls have a round facial disc, while barn owls are known for their heart shaped facial disc. Barn owls are also nocturnal owls, while not all true owls are nocturnal. Barred owls are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk. An important note about nocturnal owls is that it doesn't mean they necessarily sleep for the entirety of the day, terms like nocturnal, diurnal, and crepuscular are moreso to indicate when they are most active, it doesn't strictly dictate their sleep schedule.
Barred owls are marshland and forest inhabiting owls, and their diet reflects that. Unlike most other owls, they will hunt fish and crayfish. They are one of the best examples of a generalist hunter in the raptor world, catching anything from rodents to frogs to lizards to fish.
The range that barred owls inhabit has been expanding, they used to be an eastern species, but have moved westward through Canada and to the Pacific Northwest. With their expansion, the northern spotted owl, native to the PNW and fairly closely resembling a barred owl, but with more of a brown coloration and different barring on the chest, has been threatened due to competition with the barred owl. Although the barred owl has had an impact on the northern spotted owl, the barred owl has been unfairly given most of the blame, rather than focusing on the habitat destruction that the northern spotted owl faces because of humans.
Though birds of prey are often referred to as apex predators, many do face threats from other animals, including other birds of prey. Barred owls are often threatened by great horned owls, especially young barred owls. That's one of the many things to keep in mind when releasing a rehabilitated bird like the barred owl, always being mindful of what other birds are commonly seen in the area you are releasing the bird into; barred owls should not be released into great horned owl territory, and vice versa.
A common misconception about owls is that they all hoot. In Florida, we have five species of owls (barred, great horned, barn, eastern screech, burrowing), and only two of those are hooting owls: the barred owls and the great horned owls. The hoot of a barred owl is very distinct, the most common hoot being an 8 note call, known as "who cooks for you, who cooks for you all!" (which I absolutely love saying). No disrespect to the great horned, but their hoot is much more boring in my opinion, consisting of a standard hoo-hoo-hoo.
I was planning on getting more into the biology of the barred owl (the usage of the proventriculus for the formation of pellets, their muscoskeletal system, their body temperature, BPM, etc) but I'll save all that medical stuff for another post that is more broadly about bird of prey biology and I'll leave you with this adorable barred owl couple pic. Feel free to either put questions in my inbox or in the comments :)

I've already shared my thoughts on the cover and repeat recipes. The book is finally here and overall I am happy with it.
3/4 of the recipes are sweet rather than savory. Each character is given a "meet" page, including popular foods from their time or place (even the GOTY). The chapters are not by character as I originally thought they might be. They are divided by: sweet snacks, savory sharables, cookies & bars, and cakes & pies.
Under the cut I put what recipes don't make sense to me and what I wish they'd included. A number of these actually showed up in the "popular foods" blurbs.
For example, Rebecca's are all things I would have wanted if she had her own cookbook (maybe minus the pickled herring):
Kaya: Dairy was not part of the Nez Perce's diet and she wouldn't have known about yogurt. I'm fairly certain that apples didn't come to the PNW until missionaries started planting orchards, which would have been at the tail end of Kaya's life. Mostly - where's the salmon? If Joss can have fish tacos, Kaya can have salmon in some form. That was as much a staple to Kaya's diet as it is to the PNW today.
Felicity: Since the first presidential election wasn't until more than a decade after her story ends, I don't know why she needs an election cake.
Josefina: There's plenty of ways to prepare dulce de leche and I feel like crepes (a French dessert) are not the most appropriate way for a New Mexican character. I'd also like to see a recipe using melon, which was her birthday gift from Mariana.
Kirsten: Even though both would be repeats of her previous cookbook, it should have St. Lucia buns and pepparkakor cookies.
Rebecca: New York cheesecake is a thing, but not really that relevant to Rebecca. The sandwich cookies don't make sense to me (though Oreos were invented in her decade). They also gave Luciana a sandwich cookie recipe. I'd rather have rugelach and egg creams.
Kit: Since I don't think she grew sweet potatoes in her garden, they could have used a recipe with different vegetables.
Nanea: Where's the guava bars? Portuguese sausage?
Molly: Should be ice cream sundaes instead of sandwiches. Maybe a British treat in honor of Emily.
Maryellen: Pardon me for being stereotypical about Florida, but why not have something with oranges? Maybe an orange Jell-O salad, since that was a popular 50s food.
Melody: Triple-layer chocolate cake, her favorite dessert.
Julie: Could have included a Chinese treat in honor of Ivy and San Francisco's Chinatown in general.
Courtney: Guacamole. Her family grew avocados.
