Sorry if it might seem silly thing to ask but I’ve been wondering about something… in ABO world, what is sexuality? I mean is it based on someone’s gender or subgender? Or is it mixed?

It's not silly. That's a very thought-provoking question.

Based on what I read (cough) in these years, it really depends on some factors:

1. If the author established the secondary genders like real-world sexuality and gender (cis and heterosexuality a majority and lgbtqia+ a minority and thus, an Omega x Omega or Alpha x Alpha pairings in that world a rarity.)

2. If the author established characteristics of secondary genders like real-world hierarchy (Omegas are supposed to be calm, when stressed needs a family member or lover to be at ease, good at stereotypical womenly things regardless of gender and on the other hand, Alphas who are leaders, aggressive, sometimes territorial, strong and good at stereotypical macho things regardless of gender and then we have Beta whjch are everyday people [I call them the working class])

3. If the author established some rules like normally, the Omegas in, let's say, 60%? Of fics are lower class or regarded distastefully while Alphas are sought and regarded highly (basically how some real world families try to have a son instead of a daughter to continue the correct?????? Bloodline???! 🙂) BUT the author be like "no no no, in this world, Omegas are the ones that are highly regarded while Alphas are looked at distastefully. So the author establishes the rules for those who normally read A/B/O and think it's the same as the other 60% of fics. (Like how in pit babe we have Alphas with superpowers)

But to answer your question regarding subgender, actual gender and sexuality..... nope! None of these matters. They aren't connected. Just because a man is an omega doesn't mean they are attracted to same-sex or alpha or have stereotypical characteristics of women. The author can build the A/B/O However they want and establish some rules that they like, but in general, none of these three matter.

It's weird to me that they don't put Way as one of Tony's victims 🧐 he was a pathetic idiot but he was a victim of trafficking just like the others. Putting Kenta and not Way in that category seems odd to me idk

this is a topic i have many feelings on but will speak carefully about because i'm pretty sure this was pit babe fandom discourse in january. it is odd to me as well but i understand where people are coming from (way DID try to rape his best friend).

there's an old post talking about this saying that it could also be because we don't actually SEE the impact of kenta's actions. we know how much way has hurt babe but we do not see how much damage kenta has had a hand in doing.

the series is also much more empathetic towards way than the novel so i think people who read the novel first might be influenced by how way is portrayed there which, fair, novel way is... something else lol. novel vs series way is something i can talk about for a loooong time because those changes are so interesting to me.

But yes. i understand both sides of it u_u there are fewer people who dislike way active in the fandom now though

Some Pit Babe 2 context for those wondering about the omegaverse (or lack thereof) news

The novel writer dropped the first 2 chapters of the second book (ID verification is required to access them ETA: google or meb login works to get around the ID requirement as per @gaiaxygang)

Release date for the novel hasn't been confirmed by the publisher yet

In what looks like the foreword, it's explained that the second book was written as a follow-up to the series and a basis for the s2 script, not as a sequel to the first book

As such, the omegaverse elements in the first book won't be present in the second

I haven't seen any Thai fans upset about the announcement, only interfans, so I think there's something we're missing?

I have seen Thai fans say that they're now less nervous and more excited for S2 after reading the first two chapters

Spoilers (mixed with speculation) will be floating around. I'd ask people to tag novel spoilers, but I know they'll go untagged anyways (just be aware you'll probably get blocked by part of the fandom for any untagged spoilers)

I’m hoping it’s just a mistranslation. Seems like some heavy company interference to basically gut what an entire series premise is about. They should not have introduced the omegaverse concept or made a s2 if they were not planning on delving deeper into the lore. You are satisfying nobody by doing this. Lots of companies have learned the hard way to not piss off fandoms in an effort to appeal to wider audiences. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. If they think anyone cared about the car racing they have rude awakening coming.

According to the author alittlebixtch (dude why did I not know this was her online handle!?!? So appropriate at this point) she actually tried to get the company to removed the A/B/O aspects before the first season aired but they didn’t, so it’s not company interference, it’s actually the author.

She’s taken to Twitter recently to talk about the uproar this announcement has caused, saying that she didn’t realize how problematic the tropes were when she started writing the first novels a couple years ago. Which just proves to me that this was someone who had absolutely no idea what she was writing about, she did like a 50 Shades of Grey level amount of research into what these terms actually meant and what the Omegaverse was. Seems like she just went for it, not actually knowing anything about it and now that she’s been met with a fandom that has expectations based on decades of lore and world building, she’s panicking.

A/B/O is not a new thing, it’s been around since the 1970’s. The omegaverse became a more flushed out and ‘mainstream’ thing in the 20-ish years of Supernatural’s existence when people started using it as a way to explain the biological differences between humans and angels, then with the rise of werewolf popularity thanks to tv shows like Teen Wolf, adding the wolf lore to the omegaverse, you ended up with an extremely rich fantasy world built on a solid foundation of lore and mythology.

Seems like the author dipped her toes into the pond, and then was surprised when she found out exactly how deep that pond was. I appreciated some of the ideas she brought to her work, like how not every person has heightened senses or special powers, and how there was an even rarer subgender—enigmas—but now that she’s realized that she’s been playing in someone else’s sandbox without a bucket, she’s getting angry that there’s sand on her.

If she didn’t want to write in a genre of romantic fantasy that she deems ‘problematic’ then she should’ve gone the sci-fi route and called them mutants or genetically engineered humans, both things have far more wiggle room to create your own world around them because those terms don’t have a step by step fantasy world prebuilt around them.

But it seems like—from what she says—that the second season is not being written by her, she has no control over what the second season of the series will hold, hell her second set of Pit Babe novels aren’t even written yet. So I doubt CHANGE2561 is going to gut their best selling show to date just because the author of the novels they bought the rights from suddenly has cold feet about knocking up Babe.

Pit Babe was CHANGE2561’s first ever BL, and they changed (excuse the pun) the landscape of the industry by taking on an omegaverse story, even if it wasn’t completely within the world and just dabbled on the edge of the well known lore. It was still new and exciting and it made them millions, made their actors superstars and gave them the opportunity to make QLs freely because they know they have a fan base around their actors now. I highly doubt that they are going to change much—if anything—because they own the rights to the series and can make the second season go wherever they want, regardless of what the author wants since she already signed the contract and has no control over what the screenwriters want to do going forward.

In fact, if you look at the screenwriting team that worked on Pit Babe season 1, you’ll find a team that has also worked on Petrichor, The Heart Killers, Dead Friends Forever, This Love Doesn’t Have Long Beans, The Gifted and Be My Favourite.

So I’m actually less concerned now that it seems like the author is just talking out of her arse, until CHANGE2561 comes out with an official statement—which I have a feeling they will be doing soon—I’m going to assume that the omegaverse aspects are still very much alive and well within the Pit Babe universe 👍

The last 2 weeks have provided me with amazing experiences from the BL series fan community. Moments when several series with very active fandoms are aired at the same time are very rare, and with the end of 2 series this week, I'm already mourning this wonderful, one-of-a-kind experience.

I have been camping in the following tags for many days and each one is different and unique: Love For Love's Sake I can't put into words what this show and fandom has given me. The number of absolutely insane analyses, meta, touching declarations of love to this series from moved viewers, and beautiful gifs is staggering. The series is excellent, the audience's reaction is also wonderful, it was such a great experience. Which doesn't surprise me, because it was people's reaction to real ART, which is always something special. The series itself is 10/10 for me in every category: love story, plot, actors, emotions, my investment in the story, quality, execution, even the "heat", because even though there were no love scenes, the guys were able to convey that they are very into each other 🥰

Dead Friend Forever I also enjoy the fandom experience immensely, the tag is full of great analysis and meta. The plot is so interesting and full of surprising twists and turns that there is always something new to discuss and come up with wild theories. The series is still ongoing, but for this moment it's also perfect for me and 10/10: love story (hehe), plot, actors, emotions, my investment in the story, quality, execution, also the "heat" (hehe).

Pit Babe I rate the fandom experience as *chef's kiss*. Tag is also full of interesting analyzes and meta, amazing gifs of Way. The fandom is generally very cheerful and unhinged, which is GREAT ✨ But what's most interesting is that if someone who didn't know Pit Babe checked the tag now, they would never guess who the main character and main couple of the series are (and this doesn't only apply to tumblr!). I find this incredibly funny 🤡 I'm not that interested in the series itself, so I won't rate it. I treat it as pure fun and entertainment, so I have zero expectations for the finale, especially since, of course, I've already stumbled upon possible spoilers. Personally, what I will take away from the entire series is my deepened love for Nut and a fascination with Way, whom I want like little girls want a new Barbie doll.

Last Twilight Another wild fandom experience lol I practically didn't visit the tag of this series at all, but I spent the last two episodes there in full camping mode, in a tent and cooking coffee after coffee over the fire 😄 Fans have once again soared to the heights of perfection, writing amazing analyzes and meta responses to the crap of the last episodes. The criticism was precise, justified, systematized, methodical and accurate 👩‍🎓 As with LFLS, it was an intellectual experience. The fans provided better entertainment than the series itself lol

The Sign hmm, for several weeks the tag has been dominated by BillyBabe, which is not strange because only this couple is responsible for BL aspect in this BL series 😄 I rate my fandom experience with The Sign in two categories: "until episode 7" full of amazing meta, analysis, beautiful gifs and enrichment for me as a fan, overall 10/10 and "after episode 7" which I spent mainly on… liking BillyBabe's photos and videos . Which is ok, because, well, I do like them a lot 😉

Two of the above series have already ended, although fans are still present, two more are ending this week. That's why I would like to take this opportunity and say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart to all the fans, those who wrote emotional entries, deep and thoughtful meta, funny posts, created beautiful gifs, analyzed endlessly the smallest details and posted photos and videos of their favorite actors. You all made these last few days so interesting and fun. I hope there will be more days like this in 2024! 🥰

First of all, I really loved that the Charliebabe reunion went like in the novel. No fighting, just relief the he is alright.

I was already jelling internally, when kenta handed that USB to Alan, but then he fucking stabbed Tony and I was screaming.

HE DID EXACTLY WHAT WE ALL WANTED HIM TO DO.

(On a side note, he's probably in prison for that now. For helping Tony for so long and literal murder. Sorry to all the people who want to see him all happy

On the other hand, I've read the novel before the series ended and knew that way was going to die, so i dont know why I was surprised when he did die in the series. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not mourning him.) Maybe I thought he wouldn't die, because of his popularity in the Fandom.

Day 51 - 15 Days BL Challenge (part 4)

Day 51 - Top 3 BLs that you'd never want to explain to your parents

I'd like to send a letter of complaint to whoever decided that this prompt was a top 3 (past me) because I'm really struggling with narrowing it down

Pit Babe

I already used ABO in my description for this prompt so why not keep it going with this show, because as much as the creators of the show wanted us to believe it wasn't ABO, this is drenched in omegaverse.

This show had such a crazy plot line and I do not want to explain the dynamics of this universe to my parents or really anyone outside of the fandom space. The show itself however committed to the bit and that made it easy to buy into the world of Pit Babe, the plot and the characters, which makes this a really good watch.

Utsukushii Kare (My Beautiful Man)

I find this show hard to explain and also if I do manage to explain the plot to someone, it's probably also going to sound weird to an outsider, so I'd rather not.

It is however one of my favourite Japanese shows and I'd highly recommend it to anyone within the fandom. It's not a dynamic for everyone but Japan does it soooo well in this show.

I'd highly recommend watching at least the full season 1 because a lot of context is given at the end of season 1, so don't give in to any knee-jerk un-comfortableness. Also the final confession is sooooooooo good!

Don't Say No

No denying that Mame likes to write about trauma and sexual assault and she usually leans into D/s dynamics. Don't Say No is no exception to this which makes it a hard one to explain to outsiders without getting into that.

Love In the Air is my favourite MeMindY show (which could also fit on this list) but Don't Say No is not far behind.

Most of the plot points during this show are wild, like two occasions of blackmail, an abusive mother and a lot trauma, but I really like the basis for this show: childhood best friends who get together after a long struggle, but then they have to figure out how to be boyfriends with all their baggage and assumptions, both of their own but also of the people around them.

It's a battle between what they want, what they think the other person wants and what they think they should want.

Part of that is them finding their roles in the D/s relationship they both want but are struggling to communicate which I find super interesting to watch.

Also I freaking love a Uke that's more sexually experienced than the Seme. No Blushing Maiden Ukes in this show!!

Honerable mentions

If you were wondering how I'd get around the 3 show limit I set for myself, this is it! Neither are full BL shows so I think I'm good

Innocent

This is Taiwanese mini-series about a relationship between a man who's main personality is 5 years old and the man who saved him from an assault.

The show revolves around how his two personalities interact with his partner and how they find themselves in a loving secure relationship

As with most shows out of Taiwan this topic is treated seriously and not used as comedic relief. Even if this is a realistic relationship and the series doesn't revolve around an outlandish plot, I'd still think twice before trying to explain this show to just any stranger.

Sweet Curse

Finally Sweet Curse is a Strongberry short that I have such a soft spot for. It's a horror comedy romance with high heat and a wild plot.

Let's just say: A friend of Ha Jun is jealous of him and decides to summon a demon(?) to haunt Ha Jun, but something is a little wrong (or right?) with Ha Jun so he isn't scared so easily.

The short is 30 min and it's on Gagaoolala (though not all locations but a VPN can fix that easily)

how many words have you published in 2024? 211,714 words which is WILD and definitely surpassed my goal that I'd set for the year, which was to post 100k.

what is your greatest achievement this year? Finishing my Mcspirk Big Bang (Jim Kirk’s Guide to Delivering the Goods), which ended up being my longest Star Trek fic yet at almost 60k! I was working on it for almost the entire year, and I'm just proud of myself for sticking to it and getting it done.

what are your top three fics you've written this year? My personal faves from this year: Just Relax (AOS spirk, explicit, 17.6k) Trying Something New (AOS spirk, explicit, 3k) drawing a blank (but not shooting ‘em) (TOS spones, explicit, 11.9k)

what was your biggest pit of despair moment? Man I feel like I sound like an ass here, but I had a pretty good year for writing and nothing stands out to me as a pit of despair moment. I've definitely had a lot of writer's block these past few weeks, but even that hasn't been as terrible as it's been in the past.

what have you learned? That 3rd-Person Omniscient POV is hard as hell for me to write lmao but I'm working on that! Definitely forcing myself to write in it more often to get a better feel for it

what ideas are percolating for next year? I'm gonna make 2025 about writing this angsty as hell Jim Kirk mpreg fic idea I've been sitting on for about 2 years now, taking place after Spock leaves for kolinahr. I've been thinking about Jim keeping the baby out of spite and out of hopes that it would bring Spock back to him--it'd be a fic that let's Jim kind of suck at times, which might not be for everyone as a reader but is exactly what I've been wanting to write and explore.

I think a lot about how we're still getting extremely like... milquetoast wholesome queer narratives (most of the time) in western m/m romance media (I have nothing against Heartstopper, but it's extremely 'all queer people are pure wholesome need-to-be-protected jellybeans' and like, cool, but I want more than that as well - like give me 20 shows that are 'all queer people' in 20 different genres, thanks. BL will give me that - BL will pay people to give me that.

The only way I can get that from western media is fanfiction, and sometimes - kind of - from published m/m, when it's not paint-by-numbers rapid release that isn't about telling stories from the heart and it's about telling stories from the bank account instead (which is a valid reason to write, it's just not what I'm looking for as a reader - most readers who end up loving and writing fanfiction aren't looking for this imho)).

Thomas Baudinette is actually doing incredible work in this area of Media Studies, where it's literally a known thing that BL - particularly in countries like Korea, Thailand and Taiwan - is actually taking huge strides ahead in the genre, comparatively, especially when up against western BL.

It almost feels like we're on a giant lag, buffering behind them, and about the only place we aren't is in fanfiction, which makes sense, because the cross-pollination between fandom and south-east Asian BL is incredible (literally, they got omegaverse and guide-verse from western fanfiction and western fandom, and imho are doing a lot more with it for money than we are, see: Pit Babe).

I've been reading up pretty heavily into Baudinette's work, and also a lot of the recent and up-to-date work in BL Studies (a thing), and like, it's just kind of fascinating the different interrogations of BL we have going on in different cultures and subcultures, and how different senses of place and culture and ethnicity and minority and belonging can influence our tales, along with many different manifestations of capitalisation, economy, influence etc.

And that isn't to say there aren't huge problematic areas for BL in all countries, not just western, I can critique western BL so easily because I am western, and it's been really interesting reading critiques of BL from academics who live within other countries from their perspectives too. But I do think if I want really great BL romances, turning to fanfiction and then turning to other cultures and what they're doing is often the first thing I do. I just don't have to search as hard to find what I'm looking for. And like, I'm lazy, lol, I don't want to search through 100 published works to find like 1-5 stories I might reread but not over my favourite manhwa or like fanfiction or whatever.

This has been my area of like... personal study for a few months now (literally reading Regimes of Desire: Young Gay Men, Media and Masculinity in Tokyo by Baudinette atm) and I have a lot of thoughts of which this is just a very generalised ramble and not actually anything of great meaning but like sadkljfas TL;DR yeah

Pick a Lane: Stop Trying to be Too Many Shows

I really have gotten burned out on the shows attempting too many concepts at once. My Dear Gangster Oppa is probably the biggest offender, but it's also my beef with Pit Babe and most of the BL I dropped this year.

Stop Wasting My Time

Thai BL was Too Long this Year. These shows have us here for 8-12 weeks of 45+ minute shows and they do not consistently use this time well. I'm over it.

Get and Editor

Multiple shows this year are an hour or longer. These series need to have tighter episodic structure if you're going to have people here for the length of a movie. Each episode should have a major conflict that gets resolved to set up for the next big conflict. Multiple shows airing right now are getting boring because they're muddling through the middle of their stories. This has always been one of the things Taiwan struggled with, but it's been especially bothersome with Thailand this year.

Narrow Your Scope

Please just execute a core theme well. Do not introduce side couples that have nothing to do thematically with the mains. I hate when side couples feel like they're either here to fill air time or they feel like a competing pitch going on in the show. ABAAB had that whole thing with Thyme and did nothing with it. I'd rather have had a shorter show better focused on Cher and Gun than the meandering that New always gets caught up in.

Stop Moralizing the Characters

Way too much hand wringing over the morality of the characters dragged down the discourse this year. It's like we've lost touch with genre storytelling altogether and keep treating the characters like real people and not as agents of the narrative. There is some value in examining who these characters might be if they were real, but not at the expense of losing touch with the nature of romance and the other genres blending into BL lately.

1) First experience, getting with @maplesamurai romantically, as I been in love with this handsome cutie since 2022 and now he's mine and I am so happy! ♥ Love you so much babe! You're the best!

2) My new job in retail! It's a delight and the costumers so far have been absolute sweethearts. Certainly nicer than working fast food, and I got a nifty bonus!

3) I have a fanclub now and while it runs more like a daycare it's been one if the most fun experiences I've ever had. Made loads of new friends and it's been a delight!

As for your question...I'll have to answer with two fics!

While it took from January to September since burnout ate me out, I had the time of my life writing A Court of Blaze & Sorrow. I still need to go back and kill em pesky typos but regardless I loved this fic so much! The family dynamics, the Nesta healing, the side characters finding happiness. It was a blast and while I'm taking a break from ACOTAR fics for now, I feel like this was a high note to end on. So eager to hear your thoughts since your feedback and friendship are a great part as to why I enjoy writing for this Fandom.

Second fic is Heart to Heart. It was just meant to be a one-shot when I thought Season 3 of Disventure Camp was still salvageable. But episodes 16 to 21 burnt that hope to the ground and it became a partial rewrite. Shit blew up and now I have a fanclub, a few of the voice actors read it and I'm beefing with a writer. Very promising if I say so myself 😂 Jokes aside, it was fun to give my favorite characters the ending they deserved and rescuing this fandom's Nesta from the bad writing pit. Got people to like my favorite villainous girl, that's all a writer wants. And most importantly I've made many new friends with this fic who are now very precious to me, as I'm now making a prequel and sequel I can say I owe that success and joy to this little fic and it makes me very happy.

Side note as we did the series rewatch on discord everyone agreed to stop the show before the fic starts and do live reading instead of watching the bad episodes. High praise right there!

The thing I struggle the most with is how Derek is criticised very harshly for his mistakes, while a character like Theo is absolved of everything, because he *checks notes* can be shipped with Liam.

Theo is everything that people say they hate about Derek. He's manipulative, he kidnaps people, killed his sister, and is actually pushing Stiles out of Scott's life. The initial feelings of jealousy Stiles have for Derek in season 1 bear out here, in that Derek never wanted to push Stiles away, while Theo absolutely does.

Not that Theo isn't an interesting character. I like him, it's just that I recognise that, yes, he is a foil for Derek. Everything Scott thought Derek was, Theo is.

I've seen people say that Theo was brainwashed by the Dread Doctors to kill his sister, and you know, that doesn't actually absolve him of that. If we're playing that game, then Derek and Allison can do absolutely nothing wrong, because they're abused and manipulated throughout the series.

I actually am convinced that a lot of Derek haters never actually watched the show and are consumed by fanon interpretations of him. Like, Derek is described as being violent and abusive, with no thought put into how he approaches humans vs werewolves.

Aside from one instance (the steering wheel, and lbr, I don't think that hurt all that much), Derek is gentle with Stiles. He doesn't throw Stiles around, he pushed him against one door (contrast that with how Scott and Chris push Stiles around). With Scott, it's different. Scott is a werewolf. Scott can heal, and also Scott started their first fight and Derek responded.

That is the exact opposite of abusive. Justice for my boy, Derek Hale, unfairly hated because he tried to save peoples lives.

i feel like the type of fan that favors theo like this skews younger and they either watched the show in the later seasons once a lot of the original fandom had departed or they've only participated in fandom via fic.

these things are fine but it does seem to lead to continued mischaracterization and derek often seems to be the one who gets the brunt of it.

allison too is still raked over the coals for being gaslit by her entire family and than manipulated by gerard. i think people don't think chris and victoria's treatment of allison wasn't abusive and miss that her entire season 3 arc was her atonement for what she did at the end of season 2 and she died in the end. it wasn't a happy ending for her.

it also never fails to make me laugh when i see people shipping thiam but while saying sterek is problematic because of the age gap. it's like babe the call is coming from inside the house.

and i've said this before and i'll keep saying it season 5 theo raeken does a lot of loading bearing in season 5 due being a dark reflection of stiles and a narrative mirror to both derek and scott.

it was done very purposefully and flipped the script on scott. i didn't realize it was something of a controversial take until i posted about it lol. theo's entire function as character in season 5 is to be a mirror.

theo is scott's attempt at course correcting what happened with derek. which to me fandom seems to misunderstand and mischaracterize derek and scott's relationship and continues to pit them against each other over various slights.

theo also exposes scott's failings as a leader and his self-righteousness but so much of fandom seems to think that scott is some how flawless and doesn't receive punishment by the narrative. he was manipulated, his pack broke up, he was unable to save barely anyone and he died. theo was scott's punishment.

tl; dr fandom be wild.

I read a lot as a child, but I don’t think I had a favorite. I remember Junie B. Jones and Geronimo Stilton the most but those were series so I read multiple of those. Twilight doesn’t count cause I was a teen by then.

Currently Reading:

I still read a lot, but I don’t read books anymore. I read fanfics on AO3 cause it’s easier access, they’re shorter stories, and I already know the characters. Sometimes when I finish a show I love the characters so much that I don’t want to let them go yet! Right now I’m eagerly awaiting every new chapter of “a glitch in the universe” by VishCount 😊

What’s not to love about this power bottom Alpha and his Gary Sue love interest? Seriously, I talk shit, mostly for fun because I’m an ass that way. But I really do like how they flipped the script on what is typically portrayed in QLs, with the larger more muscular guy being an aggressive top and the smaller more waifish one being this uwu super femme bottom. Nah, Pit Babe not only tossed out the whole idea of your baseline ABO story - which let’s be honest most people need before even understanding anything more complex about that genre unless having read/written it before - but the series also tossed out that toxic bigger dude is the ‘guy’ in the relationship and the smaller dude is the ‘girl’ in the relationship stupid ass trope and I’m all for it. Babe is totally mama and is gonna be the best mpreg protagonist that ever hit tv, Pavel is awesome and I live for the insanity that this show has thrown onto the internet and into the QL fandom in general. Seriously, BabeCharlie are trail blazers and I applaud them. Even though Charlie can be somewhat whiny on occasion, but who isn’t, ya know? Lol!
