I always get a little annoyed at posts saying “btw did you know conservatives don’t know what they’re talking about? did you know that they’re incorrect about x?”. And it’s not because that’s wrong per se (conservatives don’t know what they’re talking about and they’re almost always factually incorrect, which is a significant part of why their politics are awful), but focusing on the factual substance of their claims tends to obscure the reason why they’re being incorrect in the first place. like yes they sound ridiculous when they say “I don’t believe in pronouns” but its not because they don’t understand how grammar works. The purpose of that statement is to argue that gender should not be negotiable through language, that to use “pronouns” is to attempt to alter someone’s god-given ontological gender and is therefore morally wrong. And because this discussion is dominated by English-speakers (gendered pronouns are not universal) living in imperial countries, a deeper claim is being made, that trans people are perverting the most enlightened language, the language of the West, the language that dominates all others. This also very neatly fits into right wing antisemitic conspiracies about the oncoming death of western civilisation, which is not an accident!

So conservatives are latching onto a word that has been recently infused with fresh political meaning in public discourse and using it as a rhetorical platform to be disgusting. They know how language works - language is contestable, it is both subject to constant change and a medium through which that change is negotiated. Trans people are making a claim (gender is partially mediated through language and therefore gender is reinforced and expressed linguistically) and conservatives are making a counter claim (no it isn’t). “I don’t believe in pronouns” is not an argument about the technical structure of language, it is an argument that trans people are so perverse that we infect and degrade the base components of language itself.

So yes, point out that they’re incorrect, but they aren’t incorrect because they’re stupid or ignorant, and being incorrect is not the primary problem with their rhetoric. That is a strategic statement which is deliberately inflammatory, can fit neatly inside both tweets and headlines, and makes a very grand conspiratorial claim about reality (any mention of pronouns is evidence of a transgender plot to destroy western civilisation and indoctrinate children), and this is all accomplished with a 5-word sentence that can be repeated ad nauseum. So the issue at hand isn’t a failure to observe the basic components of language, it’s a violent call to action to remove trans people from public discourse, and eventually public life entirely.

Conservatives are incorrect for a reason. They are incorrect on purpose because they don’t care what the truth is. They are politically savvy and incredibly successful at gaining and maintaining power. They know what they’re doing, and if your only critique of them is that they don’t have their facts straight, I think that’s just a really weak position to hold. What happens when they saying something factually correct? What happens when they know more than you? What happens when they’re well-spoken, well-read, and reasonable? What will you object to then?

3-4 of my posts regarding the Minecraft Movie have gone viral. And as someone who has never had a post go viral before I gotta say…

I do not like it.

Maybe on other websites it’s not a big deal, but here on tumblr it is a nightmare.

The biggest issue is that it’s really hard to filter the reblogs and be able to respond to things. If I’m like scrolling down through the reblogs to see what people are saying or writing, the SECOND a new reblog or like comes in tumblr INSTANTLY jumps me back up to the top. Because tumblr wants me to see that someone new is reblogging my posts.

And when you’re only dealing with 1 or 2 new reblogs or likes every few minutes or hours… not a problem.

But when it’s literally multiple times a SECOND? Omg… I can’t scroll down. I can’t keep up. It’s just CONSTANTLY snapping me back up to the top and I can’t scroll through anything and see what people are saying!!!

I was hoping after a few days it would slow down… BUT IT HASN’T. The only way I’ve been able to respond to anything lately is by manually finding the individual posts or reblogs themselves and scrolling through the comments there instead.

The second issue is that tumblr keeps your post as it was reblogged. Even if you edit the post later to fix a spelling or grammar mistake, tumblr keeps the incorrect version of the post if that was reblogged before you corrected things.

And for example, in one of the viral posts my phone auto corrected “Piglins” to “pigeons.” And I didn’t notice it at first until the post was well into being viral and someone pointed it out. But even after I corrected the mistake, it had been reblogged so many times now that the incorrect version is all anyone sees. So I’m still getting people telling me I wrote it wrong LONG after I already fixed it 😭

I post primarily about gay MCSM content. Specifically involving female Jessie and Petra. I don’t generally post about other Minecraft stuff, as I try to keep my blog focused on MCSM related content. I probably wouldn’t mind too much if going viral meant more people saw some of the gay MCSM content I reblog or talk about…

But none of the viral reblogging has transferred over into any of my other posts. Which is sad because one of the viral posts is about people talking about how good MCSM is. After nearly a decade of people talking down on MCSM it’s so fantastic to see so many people stepping up and defending it and saying it was good… but none of that positivity is spreading into any of my other posts about the game!

You guys actually liked MCSM? Please… come into the MCSM fandom! Inject your love of the game into this fandom! We NEED you here! We’ve felt so isolated and small! Where have you all been? Why won’t you join us here and create new art or talk about your favorite characters or moments?

Why hasn’t any of my viral success transferred into more fans of the game joining the MCSM community? 😭 It’s so gratifying to see the love of MCSM in the comments to the Minecraft Movie trailer… why isn’t that resulting in more people coming into the fandom on tumblr?

Don’t get me wrong… it’s nice that people liked some of my posts enough for them to go viral. But the way tumblr works makes going viral really difficult to deal with and I’m not seeing the cross pollination of MCSM fans into any of the OTHER posts I’ve made about MCSM!

FAQ

Is this a one-book story? Yes. I'm currently not planning any sequels. 

How many chapters will there be?  At the moment, I'm planning 10. 

What is the rating of the game? The finished version of the game will be rated adult only. This is not a Young Adult novel by any means, even if the prose seems fun and goofy in some places. The story will contain heavy and dark themes, mental health problems, violence, death, gore, strong language, and optional sexual content, to only mention a few. The whole list of triggering content can be found in the beginning of the game. READ THE CONTENT WARNINGS BEFORE PLAYING, and make sure to check it regularly because the list is constantly updated as I add more content.

Is the story historically correct? No.

Are you a historian? No, I'm not. This is only a passion of mine. 

When does the story take place exactly? In an alternate setting that resembles the end of the Second Intermediate Period / the beginning of the New Kingdom era, so approximately 1550 BC. 

Were the characters inspired by real historical figures? Some of them, yes. 

I noticed that X detail is not historically correct... Yes, I'm aware. Magic isn't real either. 

Why do you use modern words when the story takes place in Ancient Egypt? Because I'm writing it in a way as if I was translating the character's words from Ancient Egyptian into modern English. That's also the reason why I use slang, sometimes incorrect grammar, abbreviations, and such. Additionally, English is NOT my first language. Please keep that in mind. 

Do you use AI? No.

Can I play without romancing anyone? Yes. There is an option that completely disables romance for the entire game. There will also be extra content that you only get if you disabled romance, plus you'll get more screen time with non-romanceable characters, so you won't miss out on the story. 

Will I be able to romance several characters at the same time? There will be one poly route, but other than that, you will get a choice sometime in Chapter 4 that will lock you into a romance route for the rest of the game. The pre-requirement will be only that you have to have at least 2 romance points with your chosen character. 

Who will be in the poly route? Zaia and Ahmose. 

What are the age restrictions for the romance routes? Narmer and Qenna will gently reject a character who is 18-20 years old and is trying to romance them.

Ahmose on default cannot be romanced by a character who is older than 30, therefore, the poly route is also unavailable.

Why can't I romance XY with an 18 year old character? Because this is not a Young Adult novel. Some of the ROs are older and they simply aren't romantically interested in such a young main character. 

Why can I even choose "late teen" for my character if I can't romance all of the ROs with it? Because one of the ROs is 18, so I wanted to give you a chance to play a main character of the same age. 

Why didn't you answer the message I sent you? Probably because I didn't get to it yet. I apologize if it sometimes takes too long. I'm answering the asks in a chronological order, but some of them need more detailed answers than others, and that takes time to write. From this moment on I go into busy mode again, but I didn't want to leave without wishing all my mutuals and all simblrs in general a very Happy New Year 2024 and dedicate some words I have been meaning to say to you but hadn't found the time or the appropriate way to do it.

I'll start by saying to all of you who had a hard time in 2023, those who went through depression, physical and/or mental health problems, family problems, marital problems, work problems, problems with your children, with your partners, with your parents or grandparents. To all those who in some way suffered or were hurt in the year that is ending -and assuming that all of us here, or most of us, are storytellers-, my advice is: don't stop writing, ever. Keep doing it through it all, through the good times as well as the bad; write even if the tears well up in your eyes and fall on the keyboard. Just write!

Writing heals, cures and consoles, because it is what we do and because there is no better way to get out all that we carry inside, be it sad or happy. I went through the long night of depression myself and I can say with all certainty that writing was what pulled me through, and that although it may not seem so, there is light at the end of the tunnel, and it's never as dark as when it's about to dawn. I suffered from depression since 2006 and for many years; around that time I started a novel that took me 14 years to write. Through all that time, I slowly healed, and by the time I finished, I was free of all the demons that drove me to write that particular story in the first place.

Okay, enough of me, I want to tell my mutuals, that I love what you write/create, and I really enjoy your work, be it stories or gameplay; and not only those who write, but also those who make custom content, mods, those who create any kind of art, those who take beautiful pictures, those who share memes or funny things about their pets. All of you, know that I read you every day and I take you with me everywhere I go, because you are so talented, creative, funny and interesting.

I don't always have the courage to comment on your posts, be it about sims or personal, for different reasons, mainly because of language barriers, because as you know, English is not my native language, and sometimes I don't have my translator at hand to confirm that what I am writing is correct, or if there is a spelling or grammar mistake or a typo in there; also because of my social awkwardness, as I am a rather shy and introverted person; and the fact that I'm an old simmer, cause believe me, compared to many of you I am old, and this makes me afraid of saying something out of place, out of time, or of being politically incorrect. This may sound silly, but I was born and raised in a time where people thought and acted very differently, even in my early years of sims on the internet, everything was way different than it is now. Well, those are the reasons why I don't always comment, but the fact is that I read you, I like what you do, what you write, I'm in love with your characters -who are already part of my sim-universe-; your stories capture my imagination, intrigue me, interest me, amuse me and, above all, teach me, because I've learned a lot from you, talented creatures, in the time I've been reading your work.

Anyway, I got off my chest what I've been wanting to tell you for days now. I also want to thank you for all your likes, comments, questions, messages, and in general for all the love I received from you this year, it's amazing. I never expected so much in just one year, really. How to use dictionaries: A tip for language learners

tl;dr use a monolingual dictionary, and translate the definitions with deepl.

As native speakers, sometimes we take words for granted.

“Busy means busy. It's an atomic piece of meaning."

That's the mono brain talking. Often a word in one language will correspond to multiple concepts, and therefore multiple words, in another language. It should be obvious, but not all languages group their concepts into words in exactly the same way.

Even when you look in the dictionary and see multiple definitions for a single word, you can sometimes be tempted to think “But those things are the same, the dictionary writer is really splitting hairs here.”

For example, I didn’t think of the concepts of “a person having a lot of things to do” and “a place being crowded” as separate. They were the same - "busy" just means "having a lot of activity". I didn’t notice the difference until I had a moment talking in Japanese, when I tried to use the word いそがしい (often translated in English-Japanese dictionaries as “busy”) to describe a train station. The person I was talking to was completely confused. They had no idea what I was talking about. That’s because いそがしい does NOT mean “busy”. It means “having a lot of things to do and no free time” and can only refer to a person being busy, not a location.

Bilingual dictionaries are bad for this reason. They often translate a word using multiple other single words in the other language, rather than an explanation of its meaning like you would find in a monolingual dictionary. The problem with this is when the dictionary says いそがしい＝"Busy", they can’t strip away the extra meaning that “busy” has. In fact, I’d go so far to call the below definition incorrect.

This definition even uses the words "occupied" and "hectic" which can also both be used to describe locations or situations. I don't think these bilingual dictionaries deserve to be called dictionaries. They're much closer to being bilingual thesauruses.

People often recommend using monolingual dictionaries from your target language instead. Unfortunately, this is not very helpful for beginners, and beginners are the ones most affected by this issue. Without a critical mass of vocab and a decent understanding of grammar, you won't be able to understand the dictionary definition at all.

What we really need is a true bilingual dictionary. It would have a word in one language, and a full sentence definition written in the other language. Such a thing doesn't seem to exist. However, you can kind of make one yourself!

Here's my tip: Use a big scary monolingual dictionary (like weblio.jp for japanese) and copy and paste the definitions into DeepL.

Like so! (I deleted the example sentences because this dictionary formats them in an annoying way, and to focus on the definitions themselves). This results in a much clearer understanding of what the word actually means, compared with using the japanese-to-english dictionary. I hope this technique helps!

I remember back when we were able to edit reblogs the only thing that I always did was correct people’s grammar and spelling mistakes before I did the reblog.

I’m sure that if anyone saw this on their reblogs they would find it completely obnoxious.

But it’s equally as obnoxious to me seeing the completely incorrect There/Their/They’re or Your/You’re. I may have even touched the occasional Then/Than but I don’t remember.

I shouldn’t be like that, seems unfair to people. I get it. I make typos all the time because my mind is working faster than my hands and now I have words or phrases repeated, a letter added before its place, a statement that becomes unclear because I forgot a period. But I also go back to fix them when I see the mistake in post.

But it’s one of those little bugbears that gets in my head and really bothers me when I see it. Like intent isn’t enough unless it’s done effectively. Like I know what you mean that doesn’t make it any less of a problem. Like, how is one supposed to take it when you’ve used the contraction for “They are” in place of “there” for a place or position?

I never did it for plural v. possessive apostrophe “s” because I’m not an English teacher even I don’t know how that works

Like yes, i for others to treat me like they would someone else, but at the same time acknowledging that i have some things off would be nice.

I have disorganized speech- i often struggle with speaking, have pauses, use incorrect words and grammar, forget words, etc. It's mostly due to psychosis, and it's something i am very insecure about. Same goes with my memory loss. I've forgotten words, important events, personal i formation and such details, and it is very much frustrating when i struggle to even remember my own native language. Yet the only time anyone acknowledges that is when they joke about it. They'll get angry about me forgetting to do something, they'll think i'm dumb when i make a complete word salad, and then they'll poke fun at me, but they'll still fail to see the underlying problem. And even if they do, they won't think it's a big deal.

When i was younger and my school asked if i'll need any special treatment, my dad said "It's nothing to worry about". I spent the next 2 years with shitty grades due to the cognitive issues that came with psychosis, bullied becouse i was seen as weird, and always late becouse my pills made me so awfuly sleepy and drowsy. My family was either angry or joked about it. And my school didn't do anything becouse my dad already told them that it's nothing to worry about.

It feels like they're just pretending that i'm a normal son. Like all my flaws and failiures are due to my own character, and not some other untreated issue. It feels like any progress that i make is ruined by either them bullying me, or by the fact that they won't even try to accommodate for my issues, becouse they don't think i have any.

I.e., unless you're trying to make your point more precise or you're making some kind of deliberate, rhetorical move, why would you use certain constructions? Generally, there are a few I do not like, but that's subjective.)

Helluva Boss S2 E5 fixes

These are some scene changes between Barbie and the counselor that make their interaction less gross. First off, I like the show. Yes, it has problems but everything does. But denying what happened in the episode isn't grooming, is just incorrect.

She refers to him as a kid and a teenager in the episode. Sorry, but an off-to-the-side tweet doesn't change that.

The lines:

"I don't wanna fucking hear it, kid."

Barbie is interrupting him while saying this. There is literally no one else in the scene she could be referring to.

"Do you have any idea who easy teenagers are so easy to manipulate?"

He then immediately responds with "Hey. No, I'm not."

He is straight-up refers to himself. There isn't a single other person that they could be talking about. There isn't a second accomplice because the second the guy died, Barb is out of the job. It wouldn't matter as much if there was someone else.

Fixes:

In the first line, have Barb call in dude instead of 'kid'. Why they went with 'kid' instead of any other general-sounding identifier is beyond me.

For the second line, replace teenagers with virgins or something. The rest of the dialog can play out the same and nothing change. The rest of the episode can go on and nothing changes. The counselor being underage means nothing to the show but makes it weird.

(That and Millie getting a nude, while pretending to be a young teen, from a guy who was clearly WAY past legal age.)

Honestly, sometimes it feels like the show crosses lines like this just to get more attention. Yeah, the offensive show is offending people. But the more it stacks up the harder it gets to watch.

The fact that Barbie and Blitzo's storyline was the B plot makes so little sense. Isn't Blitzo's character journey supposed to be important or something? Why is finding his sister, the one family member he as left, not matter next to a camp infiltration plot?

So we can have a Millie episode, with isn't what happens. Millie nor Moxxie grow or change or learn anything. Moxxie has always praised her and she has always been shown to be the better of the two. The only exception is with her parents in one episode for a few minutes. If that was ever a problem it should have been shown more there.

I'd be less hard on it if it was next to Luna getting a shot or some other non-consequential second plot but it isn't. Blitzo is trying to track down his sister who he hasn't seen in who knows how long and it takes up less than half of the runtime. That time could have been used to explain WHY Barbie doesn't want to see him. Or at the very least hint at it.

Would building around hell would have also been nice. But instead, we get Millie being awesome, which we've seen plenty of. And Moxxie feels inadequate, which we have also gotten a lot of.

Wrote more on that than I meant to. Hope there aren't too many spelling/grammar mistakes, I'm not reading through it to check.

Again I want to say that I like the show but you can make sex jokes without involving kids. Not to mention that there are plenty of dark-humor jokes to work with.

The worst I've done was researching the schooling/education, as well as town/location for SMFM BECAUSE I use a fake name for the towns and the fact it was a grammar school was only mentioned once, so it was a waste of time. But it is based on a real place and the way they got into the Grammar school, and how they became a paramedic and psychology teacher are all legit. I also spent hours studying the villa they're staying at and given there is no floor plan, I literally drew every bedroom and studied every video I could to work out the layout and then tried to place them together. I would have spent about eight hours on it... and for what? No one needs to know where all fourteen bedrooms are???? That was a waste.

I've spent hours upon hours upon hours researching for YMAEWK, especially around the legalities of contracts, and just closeting and the music industry in general. I really want it to be in the realms of reality and while the storyline is different, there are definitely elements of it being canon as well. I think it's the only fic I've reached out to people for.

I think it's the only fic I've reached out to strangers for, and I've never had any issues except being ghosted, lol. I contacted about 15 music management businesses in Australia a couple of months ago, and not one of them got back to me. I've emailed three Uni professors in the UK who have PhDs in various areas of the music industry and have written publications on them and they all got back to me and were kind but couldn't tell me too much.

The business that tweet was about was okay. More confused than anything.

For ychiits, I just asked a lot of friends questions if they were in their area of speciality. I told them they couldn't ask me why I was asking, lol.

I just don't want to do anything that pulls people of the fic being like "well that's not realistic at all". The was one singular thing I said in ymaewk that I knew wasn't entirely true for the UK and someone from there called it out, lol. I needed to word it the way I did to move the plot in the direction that I did and someone caught it straight away. I don't want stuff like that to happen.

I was talking to to a friend about another fic - a really old one - and while they aren't from the UK, they are from Europe, and there was something in that fic that was an inconsistency for a fic set in the UK, and they went spoke about it for a good couple of minutes (which I thoroughly enjoyed, lol), but it was another reminder that inconsistencies can really throw people off.

I know people who can't read football au's because they aren't accurate enough, and they literally can't get through it because it makes them so angry.

There was a line in ychiits that I know someone knew was incorrect because she's an expert in the field, and I'm not, lol. I think she was able to overlook it enough to enjoy the fic, but it still stuck out to her (I don't know if I've fixed it yet, actually).

I'm sure there are plenty of other things I've overlooked as well. I realised that I hadn't even thought about the fact that in SMFM they're in Spain and I can't just assume that everyone there can speak English so I had to make some amendments to that.

And that's totally fine and if people would rather lose a couple of readers than do 30 hours of research, I completely understand and it's probably the smart thing to do... it's just not who I am, lol.
