"Ultimately, the larger question is why this perfectly performed flirtation is so noteworthy. Has pop culture become so chaste? Has COVID, and the sex scene drought, left audiences so starved of intimacy on-screen that even the most curated chemistry content pulls at our collective heartstrings? In many ways, the flurry around the interview confirms it: we’re officially in the throes of a chemistry recession."

The thing is. Bad/gross food is rarely a DISH - when food is bad it's because it's been badly made, whether because of skills or available ingredients. but a dish p much only exists recognisably and has a name because someone likes at least one version of it.
which is to say. there isn't really a way of naming a dish, school of dishes or specific food culture and going EW ISN'T THIS DISH UNILATERALLY CONCEPTUALLY DISGUSTING without denigrating quite a lot of people.
like you don't have to like it in any form. but it's eaten and shared because it's good to a not insubstantial number of people when cooked right.
(and I don't really understand how you approach that with total incuriosity when it's a dish you haven't tried like. ARE rocky mountain oysters good? Maybe! I would very much eat some to find out!!!!)
this is actually something the British food poll did in a way the American ones I've seen haven't really - they described how the food they're imagining is, specifically, badly prepared (grey meat and veggies; unseasoned shepherd's pie). which is wildly tipping the scales by calling it British Food but. like. that is an on point definition of why that food is gross.
(this also applies to American chocolate, which like. Broad category but I think most of us understand this refers to low-cocoa high-sugar chocolate, probably with bucolic acid. so we are being invited to imagine Badly Made Chocolate not. the concept of chocolate)
personally I just think it's very rarely a good or funny idea to shittalk how gross any given food culture is. partly because food is important and culturally evocative for most people, partly because it's very...alienating? to be like WHO COULD EAT SUCH A THING? just because you wouldn't, and largely because to be frank it says more about you than about the food that you have so little imagination or curiosity that you can't imagine why a food might be enjoyable to folks who aren't you.
yes this includes jello salad, I would like to try it. ONCE. if it wasn't appealing to someone it wouldn't be so widespread.

The right cargo pocket of my favorite camo pants tore recently. (I had a waterbottle in my pocket and stepped out of a trailer, which was just too much stress I guess.) The pocket ripped away from the pants, leaving a hole, and the button also tore straight through the buttonhole.
Tumblr media
I fixed the buttonhole by hand. I started by tacking a few stitches across the rip to hold it together. I unpicked this horrible-awful-itchy-bad label from another pair of pants. It got folded in half lengthwise and used like hem binding to patch and support the ripped part.
Tumblr media
Next was the hole in the pants. That was a machine-stitching job that I did today. Today I also had a migraine. Migraine brain should not have been allowed to operate machinery, but the pants have been on my floor for a week and I couldn't take it anymore.
I put a piece of brown canvas behind the rip and used my machine's mending stitch to go back and forth over and over the rip. It holds up fine. I trimmed back the canvas. We'll see if it stays put like denim patches do or if it disintegrates.
Tumblr media
Then all I had to do was machine-sew the pocket back in place. Voila! Usable pants!

So, I’ve been invited to be a judge for a game jam (despite feeling hilariously unqualified for it I accepted), and now I have to create a character sheet about myself… (っ °Д °;)っ
This is turning into a full-blown side quest and way more work than I signed up for… sigh I just want to write in peace

helloooooooo. So, in 2023, myself and 2 other colleagues of colour lost our jobs at a Certain Australian Media Outlet™️ for calling out racism and anti-Palestinian bias in the editorial team. Since then, the three of us decided we needed a place to write the kind of articles analysing race, gender, and pop culture that our clueless, racist management team refused to publish. And so! The Offcut substack was born. We're trying to get our foot in the door for press junkets, press-certification, etc. but it's really hard when 1) you're a brand new publication and 2) you're three writers who have been blackballed for speaking up about racism. So, if any of that interests you, OR you just wanna help an outlet founded by 3 journalists of colour (including me!) get press-cred - subscribe below ❤️

a constant in her life (DS, ~115 words, early 1795 arc, cut & polished from a different fic, more "Vicki never gets to grieve anything")
Vicki had almost never seen Burke at breakfast, though she had looked forward to it becoming a constant in her life; it was strange to escort Sarah in to that cold room and have Jeremiah look at her – strangely, half-relieved. No one spoke. The shadows of her friends ate quickly, bolting their coffee and then out the door. It was a relief to be left alone, after that: bright-eyed little Sarah digging little landscapes into her cooling porridge, talking happily about the spinet, and her dolls, and the prospect of a walk if the weather held. Vicki could borrow a little life from her charge – at least, until her own came back to her.
