The Mysterious Stranger and Miss Fortune: they have the ability to show up when someone is in danger and disappear soon after

Jason Bright: It's not the radiation that makes his voice have that reverb to it he is speaking to you both physically and telepathically

This one is more of a joke one but Malcolm Holmes: the guy can track you from anywhere in the Mojave and claims to have seen you pick up a star bottlecap which would make sense in an area with tons of people but not so much in places like Jean's Sky Diving

@thealmightyemprex @ariel-seagull-wings @themousefromfantasyland @piterelizabethdevries since I'm not going to make it to streams this week, I wanted to share my experience reading Mark Twain's The Mysterious Stranger when I was little.

So - my dad read Tom Sawyer very early to me, and I loved it. Then he began reading Huckleberry Finn to me, removing the n-word thankfully and replacing it with "slave", but otherwise reading the original text and not a children's version. The portrayal of Huck's fear he would be going to hell for helping Jim has haunted me since that first reading, and I still think Huckleberry Finn is an incredibly compelling deconstruction of American racism.

Okay, so then I started looking for other books by twain to read by myself. My dad had this collection... and I stumbled on The Mysterious Stranger (the posthumously published 'finished' version, not the manuscripts.)

And if I was haunted by Huckleberry Finn, imagine my reaction to something that ends like THIS:

“Strange! that you should not have suspected years ago—centuries, ages, eons, ago!—for you have existed, companionless, through all the eternities. Strange, indeed, that you should not have suspected that your universe and its contents were only dreams, visions, fiction! Strange, because they are so frankly and hysterically insane—like all dreams: a God who could make good children as easily as bad, yet preferred to make bad ones; who could have made every one of them happy, yet never made a single happy one; who made them prize their bitter life, yet stingily cut it short; who gave his angels eternal happiness unearned, yet required his other children to earn it; who gave his angels painless lives, yet cursed his other children with biting miseries and maladies of mind and body; who mouths justice and invented hell—mouths mercy and invented hell—mouths Golden Rules, and forgiveness multiplied by seventy times seven, and invented hell; who mouths morals to other people and has none himself; who frowns upon crimes, yet commits them all; who created man without invitation, then tries to shuffle the responsibility for man's acts upon man, instead of honorably placing it where it belongs, upon himself; and finally, with altogether divine obtuseness, invites this poor, abused slave to worship him!...

“It is true, that which I have revealed to you; there is no God, no universe, no human race, no earthly life, no heaven, no hell. It is all a dream—a grotesque and foolish dream. Nothing exists but you. And you are but a thought—a vagrant thought, a useless thought, a homeless thought, wandering forlorn among the empty eternities!”

He vanished, and left me appalled; for I knew, and realized, that all he had said was true.

How we see the Princess: Yes! Behold, the perfect woman!

How the Narrator sees the Princess:

And the thing is, we are both right.

She creates life and then destroys it.

The Narrator thinks his world is about to end. Like clay people falling down a crack that closes on them. Then they are gone and forgotten.

Why would the Narrator care that she will make new worlds? He thinks his world is about to end and everyone he has ever known and loved will be gone forever. He willingly died to try and save everyone else.

Weather he was right about the immediate end of his world is unknown but he thought it was coming

Now not much can be said about the Mysterious Stranger. Some say he's a ghost, others say he's from the past to do what was already damaged, others say he's a guy who just shoots 1st and asks questions never. But some speculate that he's from a secret organization of trench-coats who help whoever in need in a gunfight.

Regardless the Stranger along with his lady counterpart from New Vegas are still in mystery. But my question is? Who is this guy? Where did he come from? And why does he help any of us? What is his sole mission that drives him to do what he does?

Again it will probably stay a mystery of the Mysterious Stranger...

I'm really proud of this build, but it could be a lot better and I'd really like to further hone my skills, plus learn some new adjacent ones. Cosplay for me is one part hyperfixation, one part "I want to learn how to do [x]".

The nice thing is, I can replace/embellish pieces at my leisure, as it's a fairly modular design. So, V2 may stretch over a year or two, as I have other projects I'd like to work on as well. 😅

I think the Mysterious Stranger by Mark Twain might be my favorite thing I have ever read. It explains so much of what I believe politically, spiritually, morally. I think while it obviously has a lot of nihilistic elements, it is also optimistic. It doesn’t say “just give up and die” but rather “why are we living this way and torturing ourselves when nothing really matters and your rules are made up?”
