so. uh. yyyyyeah. when i said i liked all interpretations of their dynamic equally i uh. i lied. and to be totally and completely and 100% honest with you it speaks volumes to the state of the internet that i have been legitimately afraid to say that like i've genuinely been debating and turning it over in my head and arguing with myself about it for days because i don't want people frickin' YELLING at me and telling me to off myself because i like a dadgum fictional ship but it's valentine's and my friend has been hyping up the crap outta me so i'm past the point of having a reasonable excuse to chicken out (and i know myself and if i don't do it today then i likely won't do it at all)

anyway words actually cannot express how obsessed i am with post-o66 aus in which they stay together (largely because i so completely refuse to believe they'd be willing to split up after THAT, ESPECIALLY that soon) so yeah shoutout to the softest fluffiest gut-punch-iest pair in the galaxy to whom everything bad has happened but who stay silly despite the horrors

im ignoring any and all news of potential casting in favor of lucid fever-dream-hallucinating my own pitch for a beatles biopic that follows ringo as the main perspective character as he meets the other's in hamburg, when he's with rory storm, and older and more experienced and the beatles are all intimidated by him and trying to impress him so he's introduced to them at their Most ThemTM -- paul at his most McCharmly, John at his toughest of teddy boys, george trying harder than ever to play at the grown up who belongs there

So both ringo and the audience start off getting to know these people as the most one-dimensional, performative versions of themselves, almost the caricatures that stories usually end up painting them as anyways because that's what theyre acting like at first, but again both ringo and the audience slowly peel away the layers of persona as they watch things fall apart, and build back up, because this eclectic little band of boys is a complete mess with a rhythm section that should probably be in jail for crimes against music but there's something sparking under the surface, just waiting for that last cog in the machine to click into place to become something

and as time goes on and they all have their ups and downs, the more they spend time around each other as two bands of familiar faces from home while living in a foreign place and get to know each other bit by bit, it uncovers the little glimmers of who these people actually are. the john that's only tough because he's still running from grief, and chasing the relationships in his life he thinks he can hold onto. The paul that isn't as charming when hes lonely and furious because hes ready to fight tooth and nail -- and eventually just fists -- for the promise of this band he dropped everything for and nobody seems to be taking as seriously as he is. The george who wants to be more than the spare part to the duo who have already decided that theyre it and dont have room for anything else

he sits in for a few performances while their drummer is who-knows-where. and not only does everything start to fit into place musically, but he brings both a levity and a steadiness that they'd been missing, the reliable heartbeat in the background that keeps it all going

and theres something compelling and electric about them that drags you along and won't stop that just isnt entirely there in the more polished band he belongs to now, so a few years later when hes offered a little higher salary and a place with them, he takes it

etc etc continue that same process of breaking down barriers and finding your way into already long-established dynamics and getting more complete pictures of who they are as a unit and individuals through the creative process, through public scrutiny, through the chaos and euphoria and horrors of success, through the incomparable connection and intimacy of becoming one head of the monster, and the exhaustion and turmoil of what its like to be one thing just to eventually tear itself apart

in my head the ideal version is a show or even a miniseries so theres more room to spread the story out compared to a movie. but a large part of the purpose of creating a biopic in the first place is outsiders wanting to know what the reality of being in the belly of the beast is like, and learning about the people within, so why no one has ever utilized the framing of the one member of the band whose experience of joining was exactly that....

I know we’ve all been calling Eddie‘s moustache, his gay moustache and I’m as guilty of it as the next person, but the reality is moustache he’s gave far more symbolism than being gay - in fact the gay moustache is actually a very recent thing (the 1970’s!) and an intentional movement by the gay community to subvert cultural stereotypes.

You see the moustache has been symbolic throughout history. They have been symbols of wisdom (think long Chinese moustaches), status (in parts of rajput India, historically only those of an upper caste could wear a moustache so it was associated with being ‘higher born’) and in Europe and America it was a symbol of masculinity and male virility. Indeed many European armies required officers and often enlisted men to wear moustaches. So its association with the military is long founded (apart from the equipment only allowing moustaches, it’s also a part of the reason firefighter swear them - because it is a male dominated career and therefore the moustache is a symbol of masculinity) and predates the moustache as a symbol of queerness.

All of this combined with Eddie diaz having one at this point in time is so interesting, especially because we now know that he’s going to symbolically shave it off on screen as a part of his emotional arc.

Eddie growing a moustache in the aftermath of the Shannon/Kim of it all - the fact Eddie has clearly not dealt with loosing Shannon or his grief, and there is a lot of other emotions and things tied up in dealing with that grief is super important. Eddie growing a moustache is him expressing his masculinity - tying himself to his heteronormative relationship and his military past.

To Eddie right now - his military past is when he had Shannon - it’s when he had a ‘complete family’. He isn’t seeing the cracks in the walls or the fact the foundation is made of quicksand. He isn’t able to see that his In his mind that is when he was happy and that is why he can’t grieve. Which is why he’s grown a moustache - because he’s clinging to his masculinity and the time when he felt he had control over his life.

It is essentially Eddie breakdown 2.0 and in the same way breakdown 1.0 came with a new haircut, but ultimately allowed him to process and deal with part of his trauma, breakdown 2.0 is likely to be the same thing. This time, likely dealing with Shannon and very likely the fact that she was essentially a ‘beard’ for him (even if he wasn’t fully cognisant of it at the time - I genuinely believe he loves(d) Shannon - but I also believe she enabled him to not have to look at himself too closely and keep himself in the closet) so shaving off that moustache is symbolic of shedding his beard (because he’s a firefighter and cannot have a full beard) and embracing his true authentic self.

So Eddie’s moustache is a symbol of his queerness - but only when he shaves it off.

I’m sure people have done alignment charts for the raven cycle but I’ve been thinking a lot about adam as chaotic neutral. like there’s a line in trk where he says he doesn’t take sides (and then proceeds to take sides) and he actually takes sides a lot, but he doesn’t take sides between ronan and gansey bc he likes one better than the other (he is loyal to them both) but instead he takes sides because his opinions of right vs wrong are entirely his own. anyways here are my thoughts:

🍷I think the reason we tend to be offput by drag/crossdressing/otokonoko media is that they’re also often still strictly operating by cisheteronormative values.

How many mangas feature crossdressing that both A. Don’t have a single trans person that exists, or B. Has them stop at the end of the story?

How many times have Drag Queens like RuPaul been explicit transphobes who punch down at transgender women?

It feels gross. Like an underlying implication that it’s only okay for them to do this if they still identify as cis men. That it’s a costume, a performance, a gag a joke a bit it’s not real. That the hidden agreement would break if they were just transgender women. :/

And so much of this would be avoided if we were just…. Allowed to exist in the space. We’re not asking for a takeover, we’re saying they’re trying to do a math equation with vital variables ignored every time.

Maybe we’d take “UwU I’m a boy! I just love presenting as a woman in public uwu! And cute things UwU! I’m still a boy U-fucking-wU!” More seriously if ANY trans woman was actually there to pitch the idea and be respected, even if declined. Eesh. - Faye
