I'm on my like tri-monthly random Borderlands fixation tirade tonight, and one of the things I've really got kicking around in my head at the moment isn't a character- but rather, Helios station in its entirety.
A corporate satellite hub orbiting the moon of a major planet, the size of a city or larger- shaped like an H, the pinnacle of egotistical, over-the-top design. Too *good* to grace Elpis or Pandora's surface, keeping a cool professional distance from everything and everyone below it. Allowing the people on-board to monitor the lives of those below on both sides, and to oversee all of Hyperion's endeavors from a distance. Built to give Hyperion express access via moonshot to anything that falls within its Eye's field of vision. If the Eye can see it, Hyperion can send people to it- or annihilate it from a thousand miles away in space.
Hyperion does surveillance really well. It's not something they ever really emphasize throughout the series, to my awareness, but it's fascinating. The first major time we're introduced to the concept of an ECHOeye connected to a Hyperion database, it's through Rhys- a character who can use his eye to see all the bizarrely specific information Hyperion's database has held over the years. Hyperion knows the names, faces, and life details of a stunning amount of people, when you really think about it. (I know this is just because the ECHOeye thing is a fun info-gathering mechanic in Tales, but hey- if I think it's fun to assign it narrative meaning, I'm gonna do it.)
But that's a bit of a tangent. Asides from being an enormous eye in the sky and Hyperion's very own hand of God as far as terrestrial punishment is concerned, it's also fascinating on an internal level.
It's design allows for so many fascinating choices. It isn't a company building alone, it's a city with a PA system. There are rooms you walk into in the lines of the 'H' that are so tall vertically that the endless expanse above you as you walk almost registers to you as the sky. Lines of vegetation- fake or not is anyone's guess- and paved paths make regular hallways feel like courtyards. There are countless windows that face the night sky, and some of them have been given a holographic sheen that makes them resemble a blue sky. People don't commute from Helios to the celestial bodies below on either side- they live here, work here, buy here, and more. There are commercial centers, office districts, laboratories, and more. A person could spend their entire career- hell, their entire life up there, cloistered away from the unruly truth of life on the ground, inventing weapons to fuel the fire of constant conflict outside their company doors. It's fascinatingly huge and terrible, and I wish we'd gotten more time to explore its insides and find out more about what life on Helios really looked like for Hyperion employees.
What we do get that I love is the vaguely haunting (or maybe I'm just way too sentimental) experience of watching Helios rise and fall over the course of a few games. Chronologically, we look up at the sky in TPS and see the half-built skeleton of Helios' limbs, still spindly and unfinished, rattle as the station rains hell onto the moon below. We see it again, finished and pristine in 2- a constant presence on the horizon far above us, completely untouchable from where we stand. Even when we explore it in TPS, Helios feels mostly untouchable. We have to stop the people on it, we know- but we never get the sense that the station itself is fallible or will somehow beget its own destruction. It's as much a part of the Pandoran solar system as anything else.
And then Tales From The Borderlands hits after Jack's death, as we visit what remains of Hyperion in Jack's absence- still putting along in the corporate world despite their retreat from Pandora's surface proper. Nothing's changed much. Nothing does change much, until the Jack AI begets the place's destruction.
Only in that first sequence of TFTBL's Chapter 5 (such an amazing musical sequence, imo, still- I've always loved it) does our perception of Helios as a fixed point in space ever get challenged. Watching it peel up at the corners and spout rubble into Pandora's atmosphere- drawn by the planet's heavier gravity to fall endlessly away from the moon- was enough to make me feel mildly dizzy the first time I saw it. As a pathetically tiny number of safety shuttles make their way away from the collapsing body of a city-satellite down to uncertain fates, we're reminded once again that Helios is an entire city and then some- supporting how many people exactly, who are now being violently spat out into the void of space, or worse, carried down to earth in a flaming wreck? Suddenly this impossibly huge display of corporate self-sufficiency, this giant throne they built in the sky from which to survey the world beneath, seems like a fatally hubristic project. They're not above the violence, chaos, and uncertainty of the world below anymore.
And when all is said and done, its skeleton sits there like a monument to the downfall of an entire corporation- carried to the grave by one man's foiled plans and replaced by a dozen other hungry mouths vying to profit off of intercorporate wars and upheaval. You look up at the moon, or down at Pandora, and feel ever so slightly wrong- like there's a star on the horizon now missing.
In a game series that doesn't often take itself seriously for long enough to deliver meaningful world-altering change as a result of past actions (in a way that isn't hideously underplayed or broken up by irony or a lack of care), Helios is a really subtle major world alteration that means a lot to me. It's a whole corporation we've come to know and despise taken out of orbit for the last time. There's no magical Helios 2. We never see a character turn around and try and make light of the situation with some shitty action-movie quip, or a joke about how 'that could've gone better'. There's just a flaming pile of rubble on the ground where thousands of Hyperion employees died on impact, and the knowledge that the Borderlands corporate sphere has been permanently refaced.
I wish we'd seen more visible change in the world throughout the games like that. It would have been a lot of fun. It's the little things- like a familiar location permanently destroyed, or a character we love dying in a way that actually begets grief and meaningful introspection (rather than just a wuh-oh, they're gone now, what's the next plot point again?) that could have really made the story of these games have a bit more punch. Because it's my opinion that when Borderlands actually *tries* to hit hard, they don't miss quite as often.
#this is me yelling#borderlands#tales from the borderlands#borderlands 2#borderlands tps#rhys strongfork#mentioned#because funny echoeye#yes this is me waxing poetic about the fucking giant H in borderlands what do you want from me people#this is what i do :)

brother and i finished rewatching zexal- time for the second half thoughts lol
there is a LOT more this time around, so it's under a readmore
right off the bat, Zexal II gives off major sailor moon energy in terms of "haha you FOOLS! the power you used to defeat last season's antag is USELESS now!"
ah yes.......gilag's design.............
brother and i have a long running joke that the barian emperors as a whole are just doing a group project and constantly struggling with the basic shit that people face when DOING group projects (infighting in particular)
also fun fact, my brother DESPISES the sound effect they use for the barian door opening during the chaos xyz summons
i want to say that 85% of shingetsu's shenanigans were planned. he wanted to put yuma through so much hell
furry coach duelist, never forget
TAKASHI TODOROKI MY SWEET BOY
ah rio "i will not be used as a shield to my brother" kamishiro.....we were so hopeful back then
alit remains to be a raging bisexual, we love that for him
though it does raise the question- since gilag couldn't recognize alit initially due to them not seeing human forms until then, could vector tell who they were or did he just hear their names be mentioned and go "wait wtf"
the friendship tournament ep remains to be one of the best one off eps of season 4 i swear to god
remember when the barians were supposed to come and collect haruto? yeah me neither
mizael is peak theater kid. i love that he and kaito fight on equal grounds and then by the end of the series you're hit with "btw mizael is like 15 and kaito's still 18"
rio may have unexplained (at the time) prophecy powers, but shark's got "i can tell yuma is in danger" senses
WE LOVE SHARK BEING A LONGING DUMBASS IN THE HOSPITAL
god i know that like- yuma's already gone through 3 seasons of shark-related emotions, but i wouldn't be surprised at all if it was alit who made yuma first go "wait, do i like guys?"
shingetsu also did a number on yuma with the same emotions, but for much different reasons
"im here to help astral" "yay!" "but don't tell him about me" "ok!" yuma we gotta teach you what a red flag is. though you are 13 and have already gone through a lot of red flags (ex. giving haruto to a stranger)
you think vector had like, a bazillion questions for yuma after seeing no96 for the first time, or did he zip his lip
we establish that kaito has global surveillance and satellites that can just- fire lasers anywhere. tenjos man
takashi and tokunosuke are canonly some of the biggest shippers in the series which is peak hilarity to me, i love that for them
im surprised anna even bothered with the uniform considering she just barged into the tournament regardless. then again, zexal rly loves putting characters in these middle school uniforms
also season 4 is filled way too much with underaged fanservice ugh
SARGASSO DUEL MY BELOVED
mizael refusing to use the lighthouse card cause it was cowardly is hilarious cause durbe is just right there like "hey"
yuma and his very bad no good day
RUIN ARC TIME
my brother was analyzing every second of each ruin tbh
he has.............a lot of thoughts on alit's backstory in particular
why is durbe's ruin in columbia of all places tho
yuma and co skipped so many days of school, you think the rest of the numbers club were just there like "where'd they GO"
we love kazuma desecrating ruins by adding markers and leaving behind coins that future teams will assume to be part of the ruin's treasures (like it did for gilag's)
also they really REALLY never fucking explain WHY kazuma knows all this shit fjdkhdfjkhfd
vector cannot sit still at all
they rly did no96 so dirty in the series. i love that he's a character fandom decided to flesh out beyond what canon gave us, he deserved that much
i rly thought there was more mutinyship moments than there really were jfdkhfdhjdfkhk ah well. they're full of potential
HEHEHEHEHEHEHE YUMA DEPRESSION ARC i know that sounds fucked up to get excited over, but it's also FEARSOME FOUR TIME
ill never understand why they bothered to go be like "heartland took a picture with esper robin" unless they just didnt want us to forget that's a character
"how'd you get your barian crests back?" "with the power of science!" is still SO funny
numbers club trying to be helpful only to get punished is foreshadowing for their fates the rest of the show
you know, you'd think kurage would've realized ryoga was one of the people he killed considering like- he knew his and rio's names. and their faces. but ah well
tokunosuke building a grave for astral is not talked about enough imo, that's like, one of the strongest scenes of the numbers club characters
kaninja you continue to bring me pain, you wouldve won your duel if you didnt say you poisoned kaito
ngl chris, you abusing kaito for a week straight for the sake of "training" was pretty fucked up
i hate the eliphas duel, i hate the eliphas duel, i hate-
"time to be with your REAL allies" durbe plz stfu
they never really do explain how nasch died. we just assumed he did himself in after seeing vector go down which is uh. hm
ahhh toku......the first casualty of the war.........
i wouldve liked more heartland backstory but THATS JUST ME-
jkfkfdhjdkf i love that it rly was just kaninja who was the reason kaito was becoming blind. messed him up even in the afterlife
astral/yuma remains to be so tender
i feel like if you ever want to make vector peak uncomfortable, just stare at him in silence until he breaks
i know that's the point, but once ryoga unlocks "nasch", his drama levels go through the fucking roof
also fun fact, between eps 122 to 143, something like 23 prominent characters die (tokunosuke, heartland, tetsuo, anna, fuuya, droite, gauche, roku, yamikawa, iv, iii, v, alit, gilag, durbe, rio, orbital 7, kaito, vector, mizael, eliphas, don thousand, shark)
"ryoga, my best friend" iv, i rly feel like that's a onesided sort of situation
alit/gilag deserves more attention ffs
GILAG DESERVES BETTER IN GENERAL TBH
i remember being numb by the point of durbe/merag's deaths. that hasnt changed
KAITO'S death tho, that still hits. mainly cause of the music
i love that obomi's affection for orbital only kicked in cause akari....kicked her
akari who was still trying to be in the plot, bless her for trying
haruto is going to need so much therapy tbh
numeron dragon's story is still so sad, love that dragon
it took mizael like 5 eps to get to the moon and another 3 eps to get off it
shark watching vector's performance and just going "........." the whole time is still hilarious. you know that'll always just be their dynamic even post canon
don thousand...........your design is so good but you are still so lackluster......
nasch vs yuma tho- THAT'S a real satisfying boss battle djfkhdfkj love that finale to pieces
aaaaaand now it's just pain and smiles all the way until the end :'3
the growing up storyline of zexal just really, really hits you by those last episodes ugh
there's so much to work with with the finale, and i love it to this day
still the best ygo series, i will not take notes on that fact
if you read all this, thank you
kattobingu <3

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea announced Monday it’ll suspend a rapprochement deal with North Korea to punish it over its launches of trash-carrying balloons, even after the North said it would halt its balloon campaign.
Over several days, North Korea flew hundreds of balloons to drop trash and manure on South Korea in an angry reaction against previous South Korean civilian leafleting campaigns. On Sunday, South Korea said it would take “unbearable” retaliatory steps in response, before North Korea abruptly announced it would stop flying balloons across the border.
On Monday, South Korea’s presidential national security council said it has decided to suspend a 2018 inter-Korean agreement aimed at easing frontline animosities, until mutual trust between the two Koreas is restored, according to the presidential office.
The security council said the suspension would allow South Korea to resume military drills near the border with North Korea and take effective, immediate responses to provocations by North Korea. It said a proposal on the suspension will be introduced at the Cabinet Council on Tuesday for approval.
Observers say South Korea needs the deal’s suspension to restart blasting anti-Pyongyang propaganda broadcasts, K-pop songs and outside news from border loudspeakers. They say such broadcasts have previously stung in the rigidly controlled North, where most of its 26 million people are not allowed official accesses to foreign news.
The 2018 agreement, reached during a brief period of reconciliation between then-liberal South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, require the Koreas to cease all hostile acts against each other, including propaganda broadcasts and leafleting campaigns.
But the accord doesn’t clearly state civilian leafleting should also be banned. That has allowed South Korean activists to continue to fly balloons to drop anti-Pyongyang leaflets, USB sticks with South Korean dramas and world news, and U.S. dollars in North Korea. Enraged over such leafleting campaigns, North Korea has previously fired at incoming balloons and destroyed a South Korean-built, unoccupied inter-Korean liaison office in the North.
The 2018 deal has already been in the danger of collapsing. Tension spiked after North Korea’s spy satellite launch last November prompted both Koreas to take steps in breach of the accord — South Korea resuming frontline aerial surveillance and North Korea restoring border guard posts.
Since last Tuesday, a total of about 1,000 North Korean balloons carrying manure, cigarette butts, scraps of cloth and waste paper have been discovered in various parts of South Korea. No hazardous substances were found, according to South Korea’s military.
On Sunday night, Kim Kang Il, a North Korean vice defense minister, said the North would stop its balloon campaign because it left the South Koreans with “enough experience of how much unpleasant they feel.” He said North Korea will fly balloons again if South Korean activists restart their own balloon activities.
Experts say North Korea’s balloon campaign, reportedly the first of its kind in seven years, is meant to trigger a divide in South Korea over its current conservative government’s tough policy on the North. Since 2022, North Korea has dramatically ramped up its weapons tests in what analysts call an attempt to bolster its nuclear capability and increase its leverage in future diplomacy with the U.S.

With their commanders captured, the moon base lost and their every move getting tracked by the defenders of Batuu, the blockade fleet let lose. A first wave targeted the satellites connected to the two surveillance towers. It was the endgame.
From the cargo Hall the TIE-echelon launched...
...and returned somewhat less than whole a little later.
Poe: "Who piloted the TIE? I heard tell they moved it right into a torpedo's line to stop it all the while sending footage of the damage to General Agnon in prison."
Finn: "Take three guesses."
Poe: "Lieutenant Chen!"
---
Despite Tina’s reputation as the one always wrecking the TIE, the screenshot reveals that this time it was Armitage. But in any case with both the First Order and the Resistance questline finished, Batuu is free once again and safe now.

Tony leaving EDITH to Peter is complicated. EDITH is pretty much the keys to Iron Man's kingdom. An access point with full admin rights to Tony's entire surveillance and control network, that really shines a light on just how uncomfortably extensive Tony's reach was.
Like. At a glance, Peter can read the private texts on the phones around him and even delete things he doesn't like. The magnitude of information control at Tony's fingertips is horrifying even before you take into account Tony's satellite-based assassination drones.
Y'know, it's probably a good thing Tony died when he did because he was a hair's breadth away from actually becoming a supervillain. Forget "Why did Tony leave this stuff to Peter"; I'm not comfortable with this stuff being in Tony's hands!
Peter accidentally calls in a murder drone to kill someone because he doesn't like a text that the guy's trying to send. But the reason he's able to do that is because calling in a murder drone to assassinate someone over a text you don't like is the natural conclusion of using two of EDITH's features in conjunction with each other. He didn't mean to call a murder drone, but EDITH was built with the capability to murder people over private messages.
Tony built his own Project Insight. Steve would be horrified if he wasn't up there on his moon base sipping cocoa and reading a The Wizard of Oz right now.

The History and Future of Space Exploration Technology
The History and Future of Space Exploration Technology From a technological perspective, it is hard to think of an industry that has had more dramatic growth than the space exploration sector. The remarkable accomplishments of the past century’s space efforts have transformed our view of ourselves and our place in our universe. From iconic photos of our planet as a blue marble to the discovery of signs that life may have existed on Mars, space exploration has provided us with powerful and symbolic images for the entire human race.
The technology used to build, operate, and maintain the machines of space exploration has also dramatically changed our lives on Earth. A few examples include satellites for global communication, weather surveillance and prediction, navigation systems that have replaced the need to navigate by paper maps, and remote sensing systems that allow us to detect fires, chemicals, or even the hole in Earth’s ozone layer.
As a result of the rapid progress in space technology, national governments have given high priority to science done in and from outer space. This has led to the development of massive robotic programs like the Curiosity rover on Mars and the Cassini–Huygens mission to Saturn and its moons, as well as major space-based astronomical observatories like the Hubble Telescope.
One of the most significant advances in space exploration has been the invention of liquid-fuel rockets, which allowed large payloads to be sent into orbit for techogle.co both military and scientific purposes. Originally developed by Robert Goddard in 1926, these rockets were refined into long-range ballistic missiles that helped the United States win World War II. After the war, these technologies were refined further to create the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station.
While the rate of progress in space exploration slowed toward the end of the last century, many important achievements were made, including the launch of six Apollo lunar missions and unmanned robotic programs that have mapped our Solar System, including the discovery of asteroids and even landing on a comet. These developments have greatly increased the knowledge and appreciation of our extraordinary planet and its finite resources.
With the advent of private spaceflight companies and commercial space stations, it is likely that a new, accelerated phase of human space exploration will begin within this decade. The development of spacecraft for manned trips to Mars and other destinations is already underway. The technology needed for space travel includes not only the power-generating hardware to reach the destination but also life support systems, cargo tech website resupply capabilities, and tools to maintain and repair the vehicle in case of any malfunctions. Many of the essential technologies necessary for space travel were first created by NASA and then adapted by other industries. For example, the image processing techniques used in CAT scans and radiography were both developed by NASA to enhance the visibility of objects in deep space. Similarly, the mouse and keyboard used on modern computers were both first developed for use by astronauts in their work in space.

Do you not believe that people landed on the moon
the united states lost on every margin of the space race. the soviet union got the first satellite in space, first dog in space, first man in space. they were interested in low orbit surveillance technology and continental missiles. the ussr had some of the best scientific minds in the world working for them and no plans whatsoever to send a manned vessel to the moon because they recognized it was not possible to go to the moon with 1960s technology. (it’s not possible to get a man there now, but that’s besides the point.) the US set their sights on the moon because it was flashy and theatrical. it was not a scientific endeavor it was literally just to dunk on russia. and tbf it was pretty funny and all of the apollo footage is funny as fuck because of how obviously fake it is but trying to get NASA to really elaborate on the exact science of the apollo mission or asking where their blueprints went makes it pretty obvious that it was all optics. it’d be cooler if we did but theres a reason we havent made any return trips.

Aliens, The Moon, and Evolution: Part 2 - Scientific Research and Contact with Aliens: Masterpost
Aliens and the Moon: The Moon is a Surveillance Satellite ~ Theory ~
The moon is a surveillance sphere to watch and learn about the species on Earth. But not in a sinister way, not in a God-like way.
It’s like when scientists put cameras into a jungle of grassland or in the ocean to film the animals to learn more about them. Scientists sometimes make the camera look like a rock or a tree or some naturally occurring object to remain inconspicuous. I believe that’s exactly what the moon is.
Sometimes a lion cub will find the camera and bat it around in curiosity. That’s exactly what the Apollo missions were: discovering the camera out of curiosity.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Humans and Aliens: Scientific Interactions ~ Theory ~
I think alien and Earth interactions would be primarily scientific. Scientists are always trying to discover new things and testing experiments. I think that’s exactly what our alien visitors would be doing.
Why study from the moon?
Well, our scientists don’t jump into a lion’s home, a wolf's cave, a gorilla’s home, the open ocean. Scientists use cameras and drones and tags and shark cages. Unknown environments and primal animals are dangerous, and scientific curiosity is not worth your life.
Compared to technologically advanced aliens, even humans are primal, wild animals. Humans have violence and war and would most likely react militantly towards an alien species. So it would be safer for a team of alien scientists to study Earth, and humans, from the safe distance of the moon.
I don’t believe that an alien encounter on Earth would be a hostile one. I believe that a species that is advanced and intelligent enough to master space travel would not be primal or hostile or looking for war.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Area 51: Alien Embassy? ~ Theory ~
There are a few reasons that may suggest Area 51 may be an alien embassy.
1) An alien who is advanced enough and intelligent enough to master space travel would not be able to be held captive. A relatively primal and unadvanced species who has not mastered space travel would not be able to imprison or hold captive a much more advanced and intelligent being.
2) If aliens were hostile or dangerous, Earth would have no chance. To think that humans, a species whose only feat of space exploration is to a point within its home planet’s own gravitational field, could defend themselves from a highly advanced, intelligent, space travelling alien species is absurd. If these aliens wanted to destroy Earth, Earth would already be gone. If the aliens wanted to eat us or enslave us, it would have already happened. If these aliens wanted to take our natural resources, they would just take them. And they certainly wouldn’t ask, it’s not like we ask the animals if we can cut down their forests or build farms on their grasslands. If we would have had unpeaceful contact with aliens, we would already know about it.
If we have had contact with aliens, it may be likely that Area 51 may be an embassy. Earth’s only logical contact with aliens would be peaceful. If we have already had contact with aliens, we know it has been peaceful, because if it wasn’t, we would know. If our contact with aliens wasn’t peaceful, we would be fully aware of our contact with aliens, they’d either be eating us or enslaving us or destroying our planet and taking our natural resources. If our contact with aliens wasn’t peaceful, we’d most likely not be alive to question our contact with aliens.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Humans are the Aliens to Earth ~ Theory ~
Humans are likely genetically descended from aliens. Humans are so much more advanced than any other species on Earth.
Any time we imagine what our contact with an alien species might be, we come up with ideas like
1- we’d be eaten, enslaved, our planet would be destroyed, and our natural resources would be taken
2- we would be scientifically studied and experimented on
3- it may be peaceful
Given these predictions, you could make an argument that humans are the aliens to Earth.
1- We eat the animals of Earth. We enslave the animals of Earth, making them produce milk, herd sheep, help in hunts, work in the military and police force, carry us long distances, work on our farms, and make them entertain us. We keep them in cages and strap them to leashes and whip them and do with them as we please. We take all the natural resources on this planet that we want without any regard to the species that live within those resources. We destroy our own planet for our own gain.
2- We study the animals and environments of Earth. We film and observe animals in the wild, and we even capture, study, and release animals, once we have gained enough knowledge about them. We even keep colonies of lab animals to experiment on and use them to learn whatever information we chose to.
3- We keep animals as companions. They are our friends and we care about them. They care about us back. It is friendly, peaceful and diplomatic. We even have animal rights organizations and we are trying to do better to have peaceful relationships with the other species on Earth.
Human interactions with the other species on Earth does seem quite similar to the way we imagine our interactions with aliens would be, if you really think about it.
