Today I finally finished compiling and working through all the responses to my fan archive survey (it had over 240 participants!! that is wild!! I expected like 20 people tops!! thank you all again I have so much data!!!) and sent off an update to my advisor, and with that done I decided to give myself a Little Treat by installing a mass effect mod or two and starting a mass effect 2 playthrough. I may be computer illiterate but how hard can installing a mod be, I managed okay with the portal mods.

What is a mods tweak manager. How the fuck do I install this shit. Why is my computer suddenly running out of memory. Why won’t my external hard drive work. Why does every single tutorial expect you to have basic knowledge on this. I do not know half of these words. Please I just want to romance Tali and Jack and have more Legion content.

Do you have a Mass Effect recommended mod list?

You bet!!!

First, here is a really excellent intro guide on modding Legendary Edition, which includes a list of recommended mods for each game, split out into spoiler-free changes that are friendly for a first play through, and spoiler/heavy content changing mods. There are a LOT of mods on these lists, but it's a good place to look and see what's out there and what piques your interest.

If you want to see my own mod loadout list for each game, I've included it under the cut!

LE1:

This is the order I install this mod list in, as LE1 is a consistency/patching nightmare. Several mods include patches for other mods, so mods like Casual Hubs and Same-Gender Romances, which require lots of compatibility patches, need to be installed before a lot of other mods.

Make a backup of your game before you add mods. Restoring to vanilla if something breaks is very quick and easy if you have a backup, and it is easy to do with the mod manager.

Notes:

The LE1 Community Patch is a must (as it is for all three games). It is primarily bug fixes, and most every other mod for the trilogy is built on community patch framework.

Alliance Uniform Consistency/Casual Hubs/Same Gender Romance Mod are staples for me. Even if you are not doing a same gender romance playthrough, SGR mod will eliminate ninjamances, among other delightful tweaks.

The N7 Leather Jacket for male Shepard is now known as Ported Casuals for Male Shepard (I just haven't updated that one).

The LE1 Diversification mods is amazing, but requires the Halcyon Hair Pack and Advanced Weapons Models for LE1 to work. I prefer the original weapon models in general, so when I am not on the Citadel, I install everything but those mods. I have tried turning them off and it doesn't work (the textures for the original guns are no longer there), so I vanilla the game and re-install my core mods when I leave the Citadel.

Pinnacle Station is the big mod I haven't installed here, so I felt the need to mention it.

To get Shepard in their LE3 armor in ME1 you actually need two mods (if you are not a soldier who can wear heavy armor): 1. Iconic Fashion Party, in which every armor you equip becomes the heavy Onyx armor. 2. ME3 N7 Armor, which makes the heavy Onyx armor the LE3 armor.

I am still on the fence on the Private Message Terminal/A Little Help From My Friends mods - I love the added functionality of the message terminal in LE1, but I always do all the fetch quests on my own, so I almost resent the help. I have a feeling most people do not resent the help on mineral gathering. XD (If I am really ambitious one day, I might dive into the guide for the message terminal and see if I can make a mod that delivers messages from the 'Yang crew throughout the game....)

LE2

This is my mod list for LE2. I spend less time modding it, since it is generally the game I am most anxious to speed through, so this may not be the best example of a comprehensive recommended list.

Notes.

Flycam is a non-Nexus mod I made following this tutorial. It is necessary if you want to use the LE2 Less Restrictive Pause Menu & Photo Mode.

LE2 Less Restrictive Pause Menu & Photo Mode is INCREDIBLE for photo mode, but it's buggy. If you are not interested in using photo mode/screenshotting cut scenes from different angles in fly cam, you do not need this mod.

I believe Sheploo appearance consistency project is necessary for a lot of casual clothing mods, because for some reason LE2 Sheploo is cheeto-colored.

If you are using EGM Armors for LE2, be aware that when you first wake up, Shepard is in their skivvies, and will be until you select a casual outfit. Which you can do on Minuteman Station, and if you do not, this happens, and you're welcome. (Either that or this happens if you install EGM Armors after Minuteman - either way it's incredible).

LE3

Notes:

Like LE2, Flycam is a non-Nexus mod I created myself, following this tutorial.

At last check, Unlimited Fuel ME3 was not compatible with one of the other core mods, and doesn't work (you can give yourself gobs of fuel via a save editor, however).

The same caution on LE3 Less restrictive Pause Menu & Photo Mode applies here as it does to LE2. Here's a fun look at one of the bugs (which I see as more of a feature, honestly, and you can mostly avoid this bug if you are not using a controller during conversations).

Shoot With Your Mouth Closed is a fucking incredible QOL upgrade that gets rid of the dumb battle grimace Shepard wears in combat. There are two versions, one or the other should work. If you are using photo mode at all during combat, I highly recommend this mod.

I think Anderson's Final Conversation Restored is a mostly redundant mod if you're using the Happy Ending Mod. I just haven't cleared it out of my library.

Expanded Galaxy Mod is huge with an almost overwhelming amount of added content - I highly recommend it as a must-have.

A very important mod that is missing from this list because I have not played LE3 since it came out is Project Variety (LE3). I cannot even begin to touch on everything Project Variety does - look at the mod page to see for yourself. This mod is not compatible with the LE3 Diversification project - you need to choose between the two of them.

Same Gender Romance Mod is not out yet for LE3, but if you are doing mShenko, the romance flags will carry over, and there are only a couple of minor hiccups that are easy to overlook.

There has been a bunch of neat stuff out for LE3 since I last played it, so I am sure there are some great mods missing from my current list that I need to investigate. But this is what I have right now.

I'm sure there is a ton more I could say, but I think this is a pretty decent summary. Holler if you have any questions! I have next to zero knowledge on how to create mods, but I've gotten comfortable installing them and understanding some of the quirks.

The Mass Effect modding community is absolutely phenomenal. The fact we can mod the games at all is due to the dedication and hard work of a lot of fans. The toolsets they've created are incredible, and there are some REALLY amazing things being done right now with these games.

the sims 4 LEPacy challege: 5 gens in

i wanted to write a bit about how i'm feeling about this challenge ^_^

i started this because even tho i've been playing sims 4 since it came out (now 10 years!), i eventually stopped following the new packs. i always got them but i never played through new features because there is just SO much. i found myself always going back to what is comfortable -- i only enjoyed the first worlds and only knew the townies from those early packs. i wanted to play through more of what the game has to offer and be able to get more familiar with the worlds, townies & features.

well! i'm still in early sims days (current gen is spa day) aka what is mostly comfortable to me. but still, i've been able to do some gameplay i hadn't tried before, and revisit things i hadn't played in about 10 years.

i know some people that play this challenge keep all the packs but just focus on a certain one each gen. i wanted to have a more challenging experience by actually disabling everything. i soon learned that there's no use forcing myself to only use the awful base game clothes &c when assets in this game look so much nicer now, and by gen 2 i already had all the kits back LOL. so i guess not as challenging as it could be. STILL, besides kits everything else is disabled and i soon learned which features from certain packs i miss the most -- clubs being a major one, can't wait for gen 6...!

i've been trying out some mods as well. it's been interesting learning which packs have like nothing going for them, not even in cc world, while others require mods & fixes. i'm gonna make another post with mods that have helped for each gen so far, for future reference.

overall i've been really enjoying this! it's funny seeing new announcements every few months and getting excited about them while knowing i won't be playing with those features for a long long time. i'm the type of player that needs to stay focused on one save. before this it was my super sim save, that i abandoned around the time growing together came out LOL but i shall return to it someday. and the one that made me go back to the sims 4 was my not so berry save, that i stopped at gen 6 but i also want to return to at some point.

i've been so locked in on this lepacy challenge to the point that i saved backups of my other saves and 'deleted' them all from my sims 4 folder, so i only have the lepacy one there. a reason for that is that all my packs are disabled so i didn't want the clutter of older saves. but yeah, i'm all in for now and i've been having fun -- glitches & all!

another thing is that being a legacy player you eventually have no idea who is living in your world(s). some people are better at this, keeping up with families around them. i haven't really done that. with neighborhood stories & mccc townies have married each other and had kids. some familiar names are still around, but more often than not my save is populated with huge families of random sims. sometimes i try to clean things up by separating newlyweds & couples, but other times i just let them be since i'm focusing on my own family.

it is good only having a couple of worlds available though. i was never that good with using mccc to import sims from my gallery, but i think i have finally managed to do that! my world is less full of randoms, and newly generated townies are all from my tray files. sometimes i take a look at what's going on and i end up doing a quick makeover of random townies when i get a bit bored. so far i've been managing well a save that is already on generation 5.

another thing is that i'm NOT a builder. i wish i could also use this challenge to try and become one, but i'm truly not interested at all in building lol. maybe one day i will (idk). i rely on the gallery as usual. luckily the base game is a lot nicer these days and you can easily find bg builds on the gallery, but i found myself scrolling a LOT when looking for different community lots.

another issue is that, well, the gallery is shit so it's basically impossible to look for builds with the only packs you have. no matter which tags you uncheck, it's either base game or ALL packs, no in-between. incredibly annoying </3 so even tho i know have an expansion, a game pack and a few stuff packs installed i still mostly look up base game builds to save myself the headache. not only that but i always like playing with builds that only have one level bc i like being able to see my entire house at once and where my sims are. and i guess a lot of sims players are american/europeans and bigger houses are more common? idk, but they sure love two or more levels. so that makes me stay even longer on the gallery, looking for the one level house that fits my style. i'm aware things would be so much easier if i would just build, but i really don't want to x_x

one thing i've been liking so far is actually relearning all the bg worlds. i've lived in all of them before, but with less distractions (and some rules) i usually go on walks & runs in neighborhoods with my sims and i've been becoming more familiar with areas of the worlds i never paid attention to before. i could never be a sims 4 geoguesser player lol but it's still cool to check out the enviroments and how nice the worlds are -- even if a lot of it is set dressing. this IS a pretty game, especially when you have lighting mods installed.

so yeah. i do appreciate how much nicer the base game is now -- especially since it is now free to play. you can have a lot of fun with the bg + mods (and cc of course). i've been enjoying this challenge and becoming obsessed with ts4 again :-)

ok first of all: if the arm wrestling is the only thing about w2 that you want to fix you don’t have to fuck about with any of the unpacking nonsense! you do have to be playing on PC. I’m using this mod to always win dice poker/arm wrestling. steps as follow:

download whichever version you want (always win only arm wrestling, always win only dice poker, always win both). the file is a zip folder and you can put it wherever you want. 

extract the contents of the zip, also to wherever you want. inside is a README.txt and a file called base_scripts.dzip. you can ignore the readme, it’s just the description of the mod from the nexus site in a text file.

find your witcher 2 folder. if you’re playing on Steam, you’re looking for something like C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\the witcher 2\CookedPC. if you’re not sure, here’s how to view your Steam installation path. if you’re on GOG it’s usually C:\GOG Games\The Witcher 2\CookedPC. if not, you can find the installation path in the GOG launcher by clicking Witcher 2, then the settings button to the right of the center top bar, then “Manage Installation > Show folder”.

there should be a base_scripts.dzip already in the CookedPC folder—copy it somewhere else for backup or rename it to something like base_scripts_original.dzip

go back to your downloaded mod folder and drag and drop the mod’s base_scripts.dzip into the Witcher 2 CookedPC folder. if it asks if you want to replace the existing base_scripts.dzip say yes (but make sure to have backed up or renamed the original first!)

ta-da! load up W2 and go dunk on some arm wrestlers.

if you want to fix a BUNCH of things about W2 it’s a little harder. 

base_scripts.dzip is basically a special kind of zip folder with a bunch of smaller script files zipped into it. so for instance, the arm wrestling mod changes only the minigame scripts, while Conversation Skills Always Succeed changes only the scene_function script. technically, those don’t conflict, except the changed files have been packed up into two different base_scripts.dzip, and you can only have one base_scripts.dzip.

some mods don’t mess with base_scripts.dzip at all. True Encumbrance Remover (sets all item weights to 0 because inventory management sucks) is another one you can just drag and drop right into CookedPC, not even any file replacement required. the way to check if you’re going to need to do some fuckery for nexus mods is on the Files tab; click “Preview file contents” and if you see a base_script.dzip in there, it’ll require some fiddling if you want to use it with other base_script.dzip mods. how to do the fiddling:

Gibbed RED Tools

probably a copy of W2 on GOG because Steam’s a little bitch about DRM. if you have it on Steam you can redeem a free GOG copy of W2 here using the CD key you find in the Steam launcher here: 

you can try doing this modding process with Steam files, but it’s entirely possible that it’ll throw errors for you talking about file access, and if so... switch to GOG and install Witcher 2 again. i know it’s a pain to have multiple launchers but if you’re willing to fuck around this much with mods it’s not THAT much of a pain. 

ok! step 1: getting into base_scripts.dzip with Gibbed RED tools

download Gibbed RED Tools and extract the contents. you can put the resulting unzipped folder wherever you like, just make sure you know where. 

open up the windows command prompt—open the start menu, type in “cmd”, right click the program that comes up, and hit “run as administrator”. SCARY BLACK PROGRAMMING BOX. it’s ok all we have to do is type some stuff in! hit enter after every command and be sure to include all the spaces and quotation marks.

hit enter! ok now we’re inside the Gibbed RED Tools folder. we want to tell it where the original base_scripts.dzip is, and what folder it should unpack that file into. create a new folder somewhere for the unpacked files to live and then type in the next command!

first command moves us from the default folder into the folder that contains our Gibbed RED tools. the command structure is: 

cd "path to Gibbed RED tools"

so for instance:

cd "C:\Users\laurelnose\Downloads\Gibbed RED Tools"

it should unfurl a whole long list of file names! you can navigate to the folder you told it to unpack to and see all of the little script files that make up base_scripts.dzip. now we’re cooking.

the command structure is:

Gibbed.RED.Unpack.exe "location of base_scripts.dzip" "place to unzip file to"

so for example:

Gibbed.RED.Unpack.exe "C:\GOG Games\The Witcher 2\CookedPC\base_scripts.dzip" "C:\Users\laurelnose\UnpackedBaseScript"

go back to nexus mods and pick out all the base_scripts.dzip mods you want. say, Conversation Skills and Dice Poker/Arm Wrestling. or even more than that, as many as you want! repeat these steps for EACH MOD INDIVIDUALLY:

find out which files they modified. Conversation Skills is nice because they say right in their description that they modified  game\scenes\scene_functions.ws . other modders, it’s a little tougher; Poker/Wrestling doesn’t say, so i had to poke around in the “posts” tab until i found a user saying that it modified game\minigames\dicepoker.ws and game\minigames\wristwrestling.ws 

download the mod, and extract the contents into a folder. create a new folder wherever you’d like—name it whatever, but you’re going to be making one for each mod so to keep them straight something like ModNameUnpacked might be best.

go back to command line. if you closed it before, repeat the cd command to get back into the Gibbed RED Tools folder, otherwise you can just use the unpacking command again to unzip the mod’s base_scripts.dzip into your ModNameUnpacked folder. 

open up the unpacked folder and navigate through the folder structure until you find the file they said they modified. so for Conversation Skills, find scene_functions.ws in the game\scenes folder.

for instance:

Gibbed.RED.Unpack.exe "C:\Users\laurelnose\Downloads\ConversationMod\base_scripts.dzip" "C:\Users\laurelnose\Downloads\ConversationModUnpacked"

pull up your unzipped original base_scripts.dzip from the previous section. move the modified file from the mod folder into the same place in the original base_scripts.dzip folder. so scene_functions.ws goes in game\scenes in your original base_scripts.dzip folder. let it replace/overwrite the original scene_functions.ws. 

repeat this for each mod individually. if you’re doing a lot of mods you’re going to end up with a lot of folders! we can delete them later. if by some unfortunate chance you want two mods that modify the same .ws file you’d have to actually figure out which lines each one modified and rewrite your original .ws file to include both, so... idk don’t get yourself into this situation lmao

ok, now that you’ve pulled out the modified scripts from each mod you wanted and put them into your unpacked original base_scripts folder, it is time to pack that sucker up into a regular .dzip again!

back into command line. again if you closed it before, use the cd command to get back to your Gibbed RED Tools folder, otherwise the new command we’re using is:

Gibbed.RED.Pack.exe "location to put the packed folder\base_scripts.dzip" "location of files to pack up"

this time it won’t put out a whole list of files, because it didn’t pull out any files, it packed them up all neatly. check the location you told it to put base_scripts.dzip and if it’s there you’re golden!

so for example:

Gibbed.RED.Pack.exe "C:\Users\laurelnose\base_scripts.dzip" "C:\Users\laurelnose\UnpackedBaseScript"

pull up your Witcher 2 CookedPC folder—if you haven’t already backed up or renamed your original base_scripts.dzip, do that—and move your newly-created base_scripts.dzip full of all your lovely mods into the CookedPC folder!

you can now delete all of the ModNameUnpacked folders you created. if you need to start over, just delete the modded base_scripts.dzip and either move your backup into the CookedPC folder or change the name of the original back to base_scripts.dzip and that should undo all of your changes. worst case scenario you have to uninstall and reinstall, but that shouldn’t happen if you backed up your base_scripts.dzip!

Obedience: Recite, copy, or graffiti a text in a dead or self-created language in a public place, regardless of whether any others understand the meaning, and provide no translation. Benefit: Gain a +4 sacred bonus on saving throws against language-based effects.

(*IMPORTANT NOTE: The Subdomains are my best guess; Subdomains are not listed in Concordance of Rivals)

A step above Ssila’s Obedience in that, while it requires your act to be seen publicly, you can still stealth it by simply using graffiti in a public place so you’re not as likely to be arrested or seen as a menace.

Canon dead languages in Pathfinder include Ancient Osirion, Azlanti, and the ever-popular Thassilonian (the language of the Runelords), by the way, and studying any of those three languages is an automatic +1 to your character’s Cool Points if you manage to work it into their character concept. A DM may make it a little more difficult for you to acquire them, as dead languages are difficult to resurrect with mere points in Linguistics, but you can just cheat and have it be part of your character’s backstory. Anything can happen in your backstory!

You can also go the route of just making up a language. It has to be consistent, but you don’t have to go all out and present your DM with a journal filled with runes that help them decipher what you’ve written; you can just say it’s being consistent! And it’s yet another way to get Cool Points for your character, having them write journals or a diary in their own unbreakable code. Ydajisk requires their followers to deliberately not provide a translation for anything they create, leaving others to puzzle over the strange sounds coming out of this person’s mouth or wonder if the new paint all over city hall is an occult symbol or harmless vandalism. It’s also a pretty easy Obedience to hide, if you don’t want people knowing who you work for, since you can get away with translating an existing document into another language. It’ll make you look eccentric, but in a charming way.

The benefit is, sadly, rather poor. Many of the most dangerous spells in existence don’t rely on language, and this spell really only protects you from the seldom-seen Litany spells. It DOES work on Suggestion, though, which is commonly used and devastating if used right, but all in all this benefit is too narrow to matter in 99% of cases.

Boons are gained slowly, gained at levels 12, 16, and 20. Servants of the Monitors, though, can enter the Proctor Prestige Class as early as level 8. If entered as early as possible, you can earn your Boons at levels 10, 14, and 16. You MUST take the Monitor Obedience feat, NOT Deific Obedience. Monitors grant only a single set of Boons. 

Boon 1: Sibilant. Gain Aphasia 3/day, Sonic Scream 2/day, or Tongues 1/day.

Nice! Tongues has almost unrivaled utility if you’re trying the diplomatic route in unknown territory, allowing you to speak and understand any spoken language. You can slap it on the party face if you’re not already the Diplomancer, and it can last for hours at a time at higher levels! Since you’re in the business of learning languages, though, you may end up the party polyglot in due time anyway, reducing its usefulness as you put more and more ranks into Linguistics. If you don’t plan on following through on that, though, it can be useful to carry Tongues around with you... Unless you plan on going into combat.

Sonic Scream’s damage is way too low to consider once you advance past level 4, coming in at 4d4 and halving each time it’s used (up to three times per cast). If it didn’t eat your standard actions to use it might have been worth picking, but as it is, using your standard action to deal 2d4 or 1d4 damage is abysmal. Plus, there’s the fact that Sonic Scream prevents you from casting any other spell with verbal components until you use all three of its charges, so casting it just to deal with a swarm of tiny foes will see you creamed by any of the survivors as your ability to fight back is severely limited.

Aphasia is a spell very few people look at, understandably so. It’s a compulsion and mind-affecting spell and is only level 1, meaning its DC is 11+Cha, pathetically low unless boosted via feats or other spells. However, it’s also basically a Save-Or-Suck if used on an enemy spellcaster because, among other things, it keeps the victim from using any spells with verbal components. It also prevents them from communicating with their own allies and ruins their coordination, so there’s rare moments when hitting someone who’s not a caster also works, such as versus enemies with some form of rallying ability, or the power to inspire themselves or their allies with words alone. Slapping it on a dimwitted creature that relies on orders from another entity to function also works.

It’s a hilarious spell to have, is what I’m saying, but it requires some pretty heavy investment if you want to keep it useful at higher levels.

Boon 2: Burning Tongue. 3/day as a standard action, you can transform your mouth into a serpentine maw with a tongue of roiling energy. This grants you a ranged touch attack that targets a single creature within 30 feet. The attack deals 8d6 points of Sonic damage and renders the target confused for 1d4 rounds. In addition, a creature hit by this attack must succeed at a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 your Hit Dice + your Cha mod) or it is unable to communicate through any spoken or written language for a number of hours equal to your Wisdom modifier. 

Oooooohhhhh, now this is a REAL nice power. A beefy 8d6 Sonic damage--one of the least-resisted elements in the game!--on a ranged touch attack, so not even a mountain of armor can protect against it! And, you will likely realize, a confusion effect stapled onto it that hits automatically. No saving throw to avoid or shrug off the effect early, it’s an automatic confusion for 1d4 rounds and only immunity to mind-affecting effects will protect you from it! It really doesn’t matter who you slap with this, because it’s ALL equally hilarious. People under the effects of Confusion have a 1/4 chance of acting normally, wasting their turn doing nothing, hitting themselves, or hitting the closest available target.

That’s a four-sided coin flip each turn and, with only 1d4 rounds to its effect, there’s a chance they won’t be inconvenienced by the confusion at all... But that’s still 8d6 damage you knocked their nose in with, and since you can do it 3/day you can just hit them again next round! The only unfortunate limiter to this power is its 30ft range, requiring you to get within slapping distance of about 84% of all Pathfinder’s nasties, a dangerous place to be if you’re not a melee character.

I do like the touch that you get a snake mouth while using the power, though. I wonder if you can perform the transformation even when you’ve got no more uses of this ability for extra Intimidation points.

Boon 3: Screams of the Deep. As a standard action a number of times per day equal to your Charisma modifier (min 1), you can cast either Power Word Blind, Power Word Kill, Power Word Stun, or Word of Chaos as a spell-like ability, treating your character level as your caster level. You cannot use the same spell-like twice in a row. The saving throw DC, when applicable, is equal to 10 + 1/2 your Hit Dice + your Cha modifier.

Why, Ydajisk, if you wanted my hand in marriage you needed only to ask. You didn’t need to do this for me!

Some deities are content with giving you a level 9 spell as their final Boon, while most of the Monitors are often too busy to provide you with such power. The Mother of Tongues, however, says “No, MY flock deserves the best” and hands you two level 7 spells, a level 8 spell, AND a level 9 spell on a silver platter. Not only that, but they’re GOOD level 7/8/9 spells! Really hope you didn’t dump Charisma, buddy, because if you did you’re really missing out.

Barbatos may finally have some competition in the Best Boons Ever bracket, though I’ll admit that an obedient Pit Fiend is still more flexible than the Power Word spells. They can only affect one creature at a time, are mind-affecting and compulsion effects (Death is also a death effect, obviously), and require the victim to be below certain HP thresholds, but they offer no saving throw and their effects can often end a battle as soon as they’re cast. Word of Chaos is the unique one here, affecting everyone within a 40ft burst of you and blasting non-Chaotic entities in the radius with pure chaos energy, potentially killing anything too low on the totem pole for you to deal with while crippling everyone who’s more on your level.

Unfortunately, Word of Chaos has zero effect on creatures with more hit dice than you have caster levels, so using it to crunch the boss of a given adventure is a no-go. Extremely effective for wiping out their low-level backup, though... unless, of course, they’re Chaotic. And watch out for non-Chaotic allies you may have, because Word of Chaos doesn’t differentiate between friend and foe.

The only real “weakness” of this Boon is that you can’t use the same word twice in a row, but this isn’t a huge impediment. Its Cha-per-day restriction isn’t much of a restriction when you consider that other deities who hand you the Power Word spells (such as Orcus, off the top of my head) limit you to 3 or 1 a day, whereas a Charisma-based caster can rattle off lethal words up to ten times a day if they have a bunch of Cha-boosting magic items. The power of this Boon lays in the fact that it specifically doesn’t fall into the “save this for later” trap by giving you the option to use it on smaller mobs with how many times per day you can throw it out, potentially saving you way more resources later.

A real good Boon! 11/10! And Ydajisk is a pretty good god to serve, because they’re just a weird book collector! 12/10!

Hey, I saw an old post of yours about you finding a ton of dogs and bringing them home in Minecraft, and you mentioned that you were playing with mods. I was wondering if you'd be willing to recommend some good mods to me? Been playing with them for awhile but it's hard to find more good ones

I’m sorry it’s taken over a month for me to answer this – I’ve been using the mobile app way more than the browser lately and I always forget to check my inbox on mobile.

Anyway, I made a mod rec post before but it was almost two years ago and I’ve changed up my mod lineup a lot since, so here’s an updated list.

Right now I’m using Minecraft 1.12.2 and Minecraft Forge 1.12.2-14.23.5.2814. (Looks like there’s a newer edition of Forge, I just haven’t updated it yet.) Also some mods are dependent on other mods or require you to download additional resource packs/libraries/etc., so just make sure you check the requirements before downloading (probably goes without saying, but just in case).

I’m putting the list under a cut because otherwise this post will be an absolute wall of text. 

PERFORMANCE MODS

OptiFine: This one’s a performance mod that aims to boost FPS and improve the graphics.

NotEnoughIDs:This expands Minecraft’s ID limit for blocks and items, which is necessary if you’re using a ton of mods that add a lot of new content. 

CONVENIENCE MODS

Just Enough Items (JEI):This one is an item/block/recipe viewing tool with a search feature. There’s also a cheat mode that lets you just drop whatever item you want into your inventory.

Inventory Tweaks:This adds new options for managing/sorting your inventory (on your person or in storage chests) and some convenience features, like automatically replacing tools or item stacks when broken/depleted as long as you have more in your inventory (which also includes your backpacks, if you use the Backpacks mod listed below).

Multi-Hotbar:Just gives you 2-3 additional hotbars, so you aren’t just limited to nine slots and don’t have to constantly go into your inventory screen to move things around if there are more than nine tools/stacks you use regularly. 

JourneyMap: This one automatically maps your Minecraft world as you explore – there’s a minimap in the upper right corner of the screen, and it can be expanded to view the whole map if you want. It also lets you set waypoints (which you can teleport to), with an option to mark them with visible beacons that can be seen from the overworld. It also automatically creates waypoints when you die, so you can easily teleport back to where you died once you respawn.

Nature’s Compass:In-game biome finder, with teleport feature. Also works with biomes added by mods (e.g. Biomes O’ Plenty).

Find Your Way:Adds some new compasses to point you in the direction of various overworld structures (strongholds, mansions, villages, etc.). 

Backpacks: Adds recipes for backpacks. By default they’re 3x9 but by crafting and adding backpack pouches, they can be expanded. They start out brown but can be dyed. They can also be nested, so if you want a backpack within a backpack within a backpack, you can do that. Which I do. Excessively. My inventory situation is… hellishly recursive. But at least I can collect stuff forever before I have to go back home and stash it all.

Fence Jumper: A very simple convenience mod that lets players jump over fences. Doesn’t apply to mobs.

Survival Flight:This just lets you use Creative Mode’s flight mechanic in Survival Mode. Is it cheating? Probably, but it’s your Minecraft world and you can fly if you want to. 

WORLDGEN/ITEM ADDITIONS MODS 

Quark: This one adds a lot of new features – blocks, decoration, mobs, automation options, underground biomes, recipes, convenience tweaks, etc. etc. etc. Main website with descriptions of all the added features can be found here.

Roguelike Dungeons: As the description says, “a mod that generates large underground dungeon structures which have a procedurally generated layout and loot.”

Actually Additions:Adds a lot of random stuff, check the manual to see the full list.

Chisel:More decorative blocks, including many new texture variations of vanilla Minecraft blocks. 

Biomes O’ Plenty: Adds over 60 new biomes to the world, with new trees, blocks, plants, etc. Works best with the creation of a new world, but you can make it work with an existing world with some extra steps (see the installation section here). It’s pretty simple, but you need to download an NBT Editor to do it (last time I had to do it, I used NBT Explorer). 

Terraqueous:New fruit trees, flowers, mineable cloud blocks, tools, etc. 

Natura:More new worldgen stuff. 

Ferdinand’s Flowers:Literally just adds A Lot of new kinds of flowers to the overworld and makes things very, very colorful.

Pam’s HarvestCraft:More crops, food recipes, etc. 

Fairy Lights: Adds recipes for creating hanging lights, string lights, etc. for decoration and lighting options.

MrCrayfish’s Furniture Mod: Adds recipes for furniture. Mostly good for decoration, but some are also functional (e.g. cabinets and refrigerators that provide storage).

MOBS/CREATURES MODS

Mo’ Creatures: Adds a bunch of new mobs to the game (passive, neutral, hostile, and tamable).Many of the tamable mobs can be used as mounts, such as big cats, wyverns, manticores, giant scorpions, elephants, komodo dragons, dolphins, manta rays, bears, and several different kinds of horse (including unicorns, winged horses, ghost horses, and fairy horses). The config files are straightforward and easy to edit if you want to tweak the spawn rates of different mobs. Note: The Forge page says that DrZhark’s Custom Mob Spawner is required, but when I was having trouble with another mod’s custom mobs not spawning properly, Custom Mob Spawner turned out to be the culprit. I removed it, and it seems like Mo’ Creatures is still working even without Custom Mob Spawner, and it takes far less time to load a world than it did before. 

Dragon Mounts 2:Tameable dragon mounts. I love them.

Ice and Fire:Adds new mythical mobs – dragons, sirens, cockatrices, sea serpents, etc. 

Doggy Talents:Your tamed wolves can Do More Stuff.

Wolf Armor and Storage: What it says on the tin. Wolf armor is very similar to horse armor, and chests can be added to wolves like they can be added to llamas.

DIMENSIONS MODS

Twilight Forest: Adds a new dimension, the Twilight Forest. The list of added features can be found on the Wiki here. Each new biome has its own boss (usually with a corresponding dungeon) to defeat (bosses can be defeated more than once since there’s at least one per biome and, like in the overworld, there’s more than one of each kind of biome in the world). It follows a progression system, meaning certain areas (and therefore boss fights) are locked until you defeat other bosses (e.g. certain biomes having a weather effect that renders it virtually impossible to traverse until defeating the boss and getting the item that will allow you to pass through the area). It can be a bit laggy but it’s still fun.

Advent of Ascension:Adds several new dimensions with their own biomes, mobs, items, bosses, etc. It’s fun but I don’t recommend it if you hate clowns because there is an entire clown dimension and even though you can avoid that, there’s also this one clown mob that spawns in the overworld underground, you’ll just be minding your business mining and suddenly BOOM creepy murder clown in the shadows. Also, if you’re using Mo’ Creatures, don’t use the Custom Mob Spawner because it’ll prevent Ascension’s mobs from spawning properly. 

Cavern II:Adds new cavern dimensions to explore, new blocks and ores, and a miner stats/progression system. It’s the successor to the original Cavern mod. One of my favorite things is the randomite ore, which drops a random item when it’s mined (which can include items added by other mods). 

The Betweenlands:This one adds a dark, swampy dimension with its own lore and survival challenges (e.g. you can only eat what you can gather in the Betweenlands and any food from the overworld rots when entering the dimension; there are new mechanics like food sickness, player decay, and tool corrosion that occur when spending long periods of time in the Betweenlands; etc.). 

Erebus:Erebus is the “dimension of the arthropods” and is exactly what it says on the tin.

Better Nether:Some tweaks to the Nether that make it more fun to explore – new biomes, new mobs, new structures, etc. 

AbyssalCraft:New eldritch dimensions, mobs, biomes, items/blocks, etc. You do some inadvisable rituals, read some questionable tomes, collect some dubious artifacts, encounter things with lots of eyes and tentacles… oh and one time, when I was playing one of the earlier versions of the mod, Shoggoths invaded my home and killed all my horses and left a residue all over everything and I had to restore an old backup save, so. I recommend reading the wiki before you do any summoning rituals.

VoidCraft:This is an older mod no longer in development, but if you’re like me and get bored easily and download every new dimension mod you can find, have at it. 

The Aether II:This is the sequel to the old Aether mod (which also has a reboot for Minecraft 1.12, here). It’s still in development and I actually haven’t had a chance to explore the new dimension much yet myself, but it looks interesting.

I played on original ps4, I don’t got a ps4 pro and I didn’t trust my pc to run this game properly despite meeting minimum requirements

I’d just ignore it and not even buy the game and just sit back and laugh at everyone hating it

and I feel like V’s actions should have more of an effect on night city instead of not at all

they should let you name yourself and just give you titles or nicknames that people call you based on how high your street cred is

also they REALLY should’ve let people join the different factions and have the story play out differently depending on which faction your in

the amount of romancable characters needs to go up and they should all be bisexual to allow any player to romance whoever no matter which gender they play

also I know silverhand is big part of the story and all, but when finishing my nomad run and starting a street kid run, I found myself not wanting to put V through being berated by him for another whole run again. He really influenced a lot of my decisions in the game and I just didn’t like the literal voice in v’s head telling her what to do all the time.

I felt like doing stealth didn’t matter and that it was more of a choice most of the time, like if you like playing like that, it’s fine but for me I ended doing stealth just to avoid fighting too many dudes at once or because I felt some sort of moral obligation to not get a bunch of innocents involved in a club shooting or something. Sure you’re fixer will complain, but you just get a lil less money but they’ll still do biz with you later anyways.

also fixers should be faction based so you aren’t being bothered all the time. The amount of fixers that expect you to do stuff for them, they sure didn’t help me at the end of my nomad run.

Also since you can run into active crimes and kill the criminals, you can just take their dope vehicles after wards and I found myself wanting to keep a few or at least be able to customize my own vehicles but this ain’t GTA and that’s not a feature, which it should be! Ya know for all the driving they expect from you and buying cars, they REALLY should’ve let you customize and keep vehicles.

Also V should be able to have faction hideouts where they can store things like vehicles and stuff. Also a faction backup system, so V can use their phone to call for back up and faction specific members can show up for help.

also the game SHOULD have a third person mode because being able to see your character in the world would’ve been nice.

also the menu screen needs even more organization, especially for all the fixer messages and important files for reading and stuff.

also gun mods need a damage boost on like the scopes and silencers and stuff.

also for as expensive as the cars and body upgrades are, I feel like money needs a buff as well, you end up running around and being forced to grind street crimes and that can get old FAST for some people.

I also felt like there was no need for walking around and exploration. There’s nothing really to see tbh and that’s sad. Night city looks cool from far away, but up close it’s really boring and empty.

also what would’ve made this game better is being able to let your car autodrive to locations through a gps system or something. I’m so bad at driving sometimes. Bikes are no problem, but regular cars are just so annoyingly wide and long sometimes or not fast enough or too fast.

also of course fix the crashing issues and making my poor old ps4 scream.

I don’t know what later expansions or dlcs or whatever could change, maybe it might fix a few smaller problems

but other than that, I feel like the management at cdpr needs to either go about getting this fixed in a humane way, that doesn’t stress out the developers, for like the next couple years, 

or just step down and let someone else manage this shit show.

I’m not a cdpr fan, I never played the witcher or any of their other games so I don’t really know how they do things.

- Frosty Tool Suite for Andromeda (install mods with the mod manager AND launch the game through it or the mods won’t work) (there’s also an editor to create mods if you want)

- Shorter landing and departure cinematics (because if they want me to bounce between planets multiple times at least i won’t spend so much time watching the same scenes playing over and over again)

- Romance for all (allows multiple romances + removes gender restrictions - and before tumblr murders me, no I’m not going to romance Gil w/ a female character)

- Faster Kadara doors (god bless)

- Turian makeover (makes them look more like the turians in the trilogy)

- Shut up SAM (WE KNOW IT’S COLD SAM)

- Dialogue annoyance removal (god bless, god bless)

- Nomad top speed increase

- Massively increased inventory size (honestly who wants to manage the fucking inventory)

- Materials for sale in the Tempest Kiosk (if you want to craft your stuff you’ll probably need this one)

- Road rage (increases the damage to enemies when you run them over with the Nomad because it’s fun)

- Better squad (otherwise they will keep making dumb choices and dying during combat)

- Addison tweak

- Lexi tweak

- Reyes tweak

- Female Angara retexture (more detailed)

- Character creation overhaul

- General augs rebalanced (if bioware insists on filling my inventory with junk at least let’s make it kinda useful)

- Remnant decryption key limit increase (no bioware i don’t want to play your damn alien sudoku)

- Better deconstruction (increases deconstruction return from 20 to 60%)

- Better backup life support (if bioware won’t get rid of the environmental hazard even after i activate the vaults, at least i’m increasing my resistance)

Hi guys! I was a staff member of Wolf-Haven from 2011 to 2016, although I was not very active for the last two years because that’s around the time Karlos lost interest in WH. It was very frustrating to work for someone who did not care to be an administrator of his own site, and you can only preach to someone so much before you realize that it is a lost case and your time is better spent elsewhere.

I want to preface my statement by saying that I am not here to slander the site, spread rumors, or bash it for no reason. I am here to share facts – events that really happened – and my recollection and opinions of those events. I will probably be banned from WH if Karlos sees this, but I obviously stopped playing the game years ago and I no longer interact with the community.

Seeing Karlos’s activity elsewhere bothers me to no end. I asked him to work on things several times; he always claimed that he was going through a lot or that he was very depressed. I completely understand, and he really did experience life-changing events that affected him and forced him to step away from WH for a month here and there. That being said, these events did not last for years, which is how long it’s been since he’s given a flying fuck about the site. He has had enough time to bounce back and readjust. He has gone to furry conventions, dated multiple people, moved, etc. I think what many people failed to realize (even myself) was that Karlos was not absent; he knew exactly what was going on. Staff can see the last time a user logs on, and his timestamps were always recent. He visits the site, and he has an extensive knowledge of web coding and design. He showed me the dozens of textbooks that he read on coding and web security. Perhaps it was a lack of motivation? I’m not really sure; he definitely had the capacity to fix many of the issues that occurred.

I think that when WH was hacked in 2013, he lost a lot of confidence in himself. I don’t think the site truly ever recovered from the hack. We lost many of the most well-known members simply because of the way Karlos chose to handle the events after the hack. He banned users who disagreed with his decision to not restore XP (the site had to be reverted to a previous backup, which was at least a week or so old). He claimed that they were trashing the site and being mean to him but in reality, they were just expressing their opinion. By the way, it’s beyond me why WH wasn’t backed up more frequently.

Out of the many users that he banned, I feel that the most notable ban was Stormgaze. Stormgaze was a notorious member who knew a lot about web design and… well, he wasn’t a moron, so he could see past a lot of Karlos’s BS. And he was vocal about it. Stormgaze ran a blog where he voiced his opinions about current WH happenings, which inspired me to create my own (this is important later). Stormgaze didn’t always see eye to eye with Karlos and was willing to point out his mistakes. I don’t feel that Karlos takes criticism well because Stormgaze eventually got a permanent ban. Stormgaze was a very matter-of-fact person who held an elitist view on the site and his own choices, but he knew his shit. Looking back now, I feel that a lot of his rudeness was just him being an honest person. He saw past the façade that blinded many of us.

As for Karlos’s creepiness? I mean, I can see where you’re coming from, though I don’t think I particularly experienced any of it. I joined the staff team when I was 14 but I lied and said that I was 16 because that was the minimum age requirement after the site’s renovation. (Karlos, if you’re reading this, I’m a really shitty person and I apologize for lying to you. Regardless, I did my job and I did it damn well.) He Skyped me once out of the blue which I found a bit odd, and he had his webcam on and was showing me stuff around his room. I definitely glorified him a lot back then, so I was just excited that the site owner was talking to me personally. I don’t think he meant anything of it but it came across as really weird, especially given that I was only 16 when that happened, and he was at least 21 or 23.

Before I forget about Karlos’s extensive dating profile, remember how he used the donation money to visit his girlfriend in the United States in 2011 or 2012? The donation money that was supposed to partially be donated to a local animal shelter, and the rest was supposed to go towards hosting the site? Yeah. I can tell you now that WH has had an immense profit and it STILL somehow makes a profit because people upload multiple characters to the site. Customs cost around $10-12 and there are over 3,000 of them on-site. Many members also purchased Points to spend on leveling up their wolf and to buy artwork from other members. Do the math, and Karlos makes a royal shitton.

But does anyone remember how he put the website up for sale a few years ago and immediately removed the listing when users found out? He later denied any allegations, but I think selling the website would have been his best bet.

I’ve saved the best content for last, which is the knowledge that I have because I was a staff member. I have never kept my opinions a secret, and I’ve always been honest. Here’s where my blog becomes important: I had a WH blog where I discussed what was going on with the site after updates, gave opinions on community events, and so on. After 1.3, Karlos asked me to remove an article that critiqued his inactivity because it made him look bad. I obliged, but I felt that it was majorly fucked up. I knew that if I didn’t remove the article, he would remove me from staff. I was a new moderator with 1.3 and it was something that I worked hard for, so I was not willing to give it up.

I’m not really sure where to start. I hold a personal grudge against Karlos because I was on staff for the longest time, yet three other moderators received promotions to admin before me. Sheri was one of my good friends and she did the job well, and I’m not sure how Fang still manages to have so much passion for the site, but I respect her immensely for that (although I don’t know why she’s still wasting her time; WH is not a relevant website at this point). I always amounted their promotions to personal bonds that they had, and I was never that upset because I can entirely understand why someone would want to promote a friend. What I will never forgive Karlos for is making Jekyll a mod and an admin and choosing her to run the site. Jekyll was a rude member before she became a mod, and she was even ruder with a blue name. I turned in complaints about her behavior numerous times, and other members came to me because she was so awful to them. He always claimed that he would talk to her about her behavior but he never did. I later found out that Jekyll and Karlos were so close because Jekyll was working on Cervidae with him. Instead of creating art for WH, they made art for Cervidae. We had a staff forum where multiple artists, including Jekyll, claimed different animals to work on. Miraculously, they were never finished. Jek and Karl (more like Jekyll and Hyde) were pouring all of their energy into this deer RPG thing that never actually opened up to the public. Amazing concept, but it was executed poorly. And instead of ending WH or passing it on to someone who was capable of handling it, he put Jekyll in charge. She is the most unprofessional person that I know. Have you read the news posts? Her grammar is absurd, she unnecessarily capitalizes random words, and she just… oh my, it irks me to no end. The FRONT OF THE WEBSITE is unprofessional. Who wants to join a website where the news is updated after months and it isn’t even typed correctly? Having someone represent your website who can’t even hold a normal full-time job is really embarrassing. But maybe that’s why they got along so well! /shrug

Jek was awful with how she treated the members. We never had any protocols to follow when giving users PM warnings or mutes or bans; there was no structure so we were all doing different things. Jek would mute someone for having stolen artwork on their profile, whereas I would PM the user, explain why the artwork was considered stolen, and add it to their user notes. I brought this issue up multiple times and was told by Fang that I was actually the one in the wrong. ??? That’s so corrupt that it’s ridiculous. None of these people knew how to be a moderator. It is beyond me why someone should be muted because they broke a rule they probably didn’t even understand. The point of being a moderator is to help users to understand the rules, not to be Hitler and swing your banhammer around willy-nilly. That’s probably why I never got along with anyone on the staff team, though.

Oh, and the staff panel was broken for years. When a post was reported and you clicked on the post link, you’d get “HTTPS” in the URL bar twice, so the link would be invalid. I’m sorry, but as a staff member, I should not have to manually type in a reported post just to handle it. The fact that he couldn’t even add a simple fix to the mod CP was really offputting and made me realize that I was working for someone who didn’t care about me. We didn’t get any compensation for our work until someone suggested it in 2013. Our compensation was 5 free customs because we were staff. Cool.

It was a very hard decision for me to leave the team, but I realized that WH was not the site it once used to be and it was never going to be fixed. I was not comfortable working for Jekyll because I don’t think she has a thousand competent brain cells and she’s just not an enjoyable person to be around. It was exhausting to work for a website and try to make progressive movements, only to be shot down and ignored. I begged Karlos to get new animal artwork. I begged him to update the mod panel. To fix the referral system… nothing was ever done. I had to accept with a heavy heart that he was never going to change, and the website would never amount to much. The community is dead. All of my friends left or were banned after the hack. I hated the people I worked with; there was nothing to keep me there.

The White Lion Pub and Shops are designated as a Local Watering Hole, as the pub is the only part of the build that requires a special lot designation in order to function. But there is also a boutique (that can be made functional with minimal to modest adjustments, depending on which direction you want to take this in), and a “radio station” that serves no in-game function, but contains a lot of activity / skill-type objects that make it perfect for a photoshoot or storytelling purposes.

There is also a “blank space” which Martine actually decorated to look like a real vacancy to let, and not just an unfurnished extra space. You can put an extra shop or restaurant there if you like, but I rather like the way Martine added those quirky touches, and it seems more realistic to have some vacancies somewhere in the town, so I like to keep it empty in my own game.

Originally I wanted to keep the WCIFs all on one spreadsheet, but 1) there are so many objects AND so many different rooms that it was getting unwieldy to cram them all on one sheet, and 2) there was very little overlap of items used between different "sections“ of the lot, so there wouldn’t have been any point on insisting on a single sheet, anyway.

This lot is one of my personal favorites, even among the many beautiful builds @martinessimblr has done for this world, and I hope my WCIF efforts will help you enjoy this lot as much as I do!

Just in case it wasn’t already obvious, the Late Night EP is required for the lot to retain the “Local Watering Hole” designation, as well as for the pub games (dartboard, foozball, etc.) and the actual bartending bar in the pub. The Ambitions EP is also required, if you want to turn the boutique into a functional clothing store (more on that later).

Update (18-03-05): I realized I’d mistakenly attributed the wrong texture to the interior paneling of the White Lion Pub... I’d previously said it was Around The Sims’s “chestnut” wood pattern. It’s not, it’s the “elm” pattern by the same creator. I also managed to find two previously unattributed wood patterns (one for the picnic tables outside the pub, one for the countertops in the clothing boutique) and have updated the files and links accordingly.

Tips about missing CC + notes about playability:

Often, most of the decor on the counter behind the bar (see this image to see what exactly I’m talking about) will spontaneously “disappear” when the lot is placed. Don’t worry, it hasn’t actually disappeared... it’s just that all the OMSPs used to place the clutter have sunk back to ground level, below the counter where they can’t be seen. You have to temporarily move the counter aside, and manually raise the OMSP values. Just remember that counter height in TS3 is 1 m high, give or take a few cm, while the lower shelf is approximately 155 cm.

The booths look like benches built into the wall, but actually behave as dining chairs. This is probably the easiest option in terms of hassle-free gameplay, but I don’t like how weird it all looks (plus the benches for the table opposite the stairs on the ground level are just impossible to use, this way). So I use the “disable snapping to slots on alt” cheat to place the booths however I like, then use this chair item (registration required to download, sorry about that) CASted to match the booths, and place them where I think the sims should actually be sitting. Luckily, the overlapping booth footprints don’t seem to interfere with sims using the table to sit and dine properly.

I have replaced the Store Bistro Oven with Ani’s modded version of the same item, as I prefer her version (still requires the Store item to function, as it contains the necessary scripts). And for menus I actually use neither the file given by Ani nor the Store, but the menu recolors by aa6x7 (versions are provided to work with both versions of the Bistro Oven).

Clothing Store:

This shop can be used as a playable boutique with the Shop for Clothes mod by Ani. If you have the Into The Future EP installed, and would prefer to use the Shop for Clothes Pedestal, Ani’s newer clothes shopping mod, you can simply replace some of the deco mannequins with the functional ones that come with the EP. For use in this particular store, I would recommend using this modified mannequin base by @aroundthesims​ instead, as it’s much less bulky and less likely to clash with the decor.

Most patterns used on this part of the lot have actually not yet been identified and/or found... the floral print on the dress hanging on the rack, the muted fabric on the mannequin, the striped pattern on the sliding curtain “doors”, etc. The wall textures also default to white when recolored, so I assume some pattern must have been used on them originally, despite them appearing solid in Martine’s previews.

The only pattern I still have my heart set on finding is the one on the University EP awning out front (the one with the motif of blackbirds / ravens sitting among birch trees), shown just above. I have still not given up, however! Any tip-offs will be greatly appreciated

For my personal use, I replaced the floral pattern on the hanging dress with the Fool’s Parsley pattern by Awesims (can be found backed up at TehSims here, or included in their “Mid-Century Mid/Mod Bathroom” set here). I also added an accent wall to the interior of the shop using this pattern of egrets (”Leaves 6″ by Pilar, and believe it or not, fully CAStable) on it to almost make up for the lack of the bird print for the awning. I use this fabric pattern by Djehmli on the mannequin.

The floorboard pattern I tend to replace with a textured wood pattern that looks like a single large slab of wood. I’ve tried both oak and pine patterns by Madaya74, and usually have trouble deciding which looks better: they both work well with the atmosphere of the store.

Radio Station:

None of the wall patterns have been found for this part of the lot. For my own game, I have replaced the missing concrete / sheetrock textures with modern, sleek wood paneling, using the “Chestnut” wood patterns by Sandy at ATS3, as quite often birch wood paneling is preferred for the interiors of recording studios.

CC from Karas Watching Society (the standing record sleeve decor in the recording studio) does not show up in my game as placed, for some reason. You will have to place the decor item used on this lot manually.

The wall lights used in the antechamber / waiting room area have been lost forever, and I cannot find any backups.

However, I have included notes in the spreadsheet about the best replacement for the missing items. I promise you, my tips will result in the exact same effect!

The light colors will also have to be set anew, after being replaced. Setting them “red” and “green” and both “0.8″ for brightness seems to work fine, but I prefer to set the brightness at “0.6″, and custom colors for the lights: “215,35,5″ and “35,215,5″ respectively. But everyone’s game looks different, so play around until you find a result you are happy with.

Pattern Hoarder Tutorial

A brief introduction: Hi! I created this guide to help other people who hoard patterns like I do. There are other tutorials out there for most of the things this tutorial will describe, but I have brought together several things from separate tutorials (as well as added a few things of my own) that are only all needed because I use several hundred custom patterns in my Sims3 game. It took me a while to figure all of this out and develop a good strategy for how to keep track of everything, so I hope this will be helpful to others who love the wonderful creativity of their fellow simmers and the patterns they upload to share with us.

This tutorial is intended to show you not only HOW to convert .sims3pack pattern files to .package files that will work in your Sims 3 game, but also how to organize and keep track of your pattern collection to make it easy to give credit to pattern creators and remove patterns you no longer want.

Addendum: If you, like me, got starry eyed at all the wonderful patterns you found, and downloaded them and installed them before you found this guide, and without recording the creator's names, etc... you may find it easier to start over from scratch by deleting all your installed patterns and re-downloading them in small batches. But if you are insane like me, you will instead spend several days or weeks hunting down all the patterns you downloaded to figure out who created them and add the creator names to the file names so you will never forget again.

Section 1: Tools

To do everything that will be discussed in the later sections, you will need a few user-created pieces of software.

Required: Delphy's Sims 3 Pack Multi-Extractor - http://modthesims.info/download.php?t=364038 Delphy's Multi-Extractor is used on .sims3pack files, to get the .package files out of them.

Section 2: Setup and Organization

Download 7zip and install. (Installation instructions on the 7zip site.)

Download the Framework setup folder, and follow the instructions on the download page to place the Mods setup folder in the correct folder on your computer.

In your Documents folder, create a new folder for storing Sims3 related files. Mine is titled: 'Sims3DownloadFiles'

Download Delphy's Sims 3 Pack Multi-Extractor and place it inside your new folder.

Use 7zip (or whichever program you've aqcuired) to unzip/extract the Multi-Extractor .exe file from the .rar archive file. Extract the .exe file directly to your new 'Sims3DownloadFiles' folder. The Multi-Extractor does need any additional installation. For ease of use, I right-clicked on the .exe file and selected 'pin to start menu' to give myself a shortcut from the start menu to use the program. According to preference, you can also simply create a shortcut on the desktop, or pin it to the taskbar.

Download s3pe. Place the downloaded file in the same folder as the Multi-Extractor. If you have Windows, you can download the Easy Installer version of s3pe, and simply follow the directions after you run the .exe file. Otherwise, follow the other instructions on the download page. The Sims 3 Package Editor (s3pe) will install similarly to most Windows programs, and automatically generate a shortcut in the start menu. I, of course, once again pinned it to the start menu, but this is personal preference.

If you want to use CC Magic, this would be the time to download and install it. In section 9, I've linked to three separate tutorials on how to install and use CC Magic. In this tutorial, I will focus more on how to install .package files in folders in the Mods folder, for those who don't want to use CC Magic.

  Section 3: Methodology

After much trial and error, many mistakes, and tons of frustration, I came to the following conclusions:

It's polite and respectful to give credit to the creator of the pattern when you use it on a piece of furniture or piece of clothing and upload it to the Exchange or elsewhere.

Because the in-game interface does not display file names or any titles when you are in CAS, if you do not make preparations ahead of time (or have a photographic memory), you may have much frustration, irritation, and difficulty in figuring out which creator a pattern you used in game belongs to.

Therefore, the steps below - while they take a little time, can save much future frustration and time.

In your Sims3DownloadFiles folder, create another folder titled 'Pattern Images'.

Inside the Pattern Images folder, create an individual folder for each category of Patterns within Sims3. In these folders you will later put the image files you will save from each pattern that you install. I file the images by category rather than by creator, because in CAS, the only clue you get is what the pattern looks like and what category it's in.

Whenever you download a new pattern, ALWAYS make sure the name of the pattern creator is part of the file name. If it isn't, re-name the file and put the pattern creator's name into it. There's a screenshot of one of my Pattern folders below. Note how I added in the creator's name followed by a dash before each pattern name.

Decide how you're going to organize your .package files. Personally, I use CC magic, but I also keep a backup of all the .package files in separate folders. For any pattern creator that I have more than a dozen of their patterns, I create a separate folder. I also keep patterns obtained from different places in separate folders - so any patterns from ModTheSims or TheSimsResource are in separate folders from the patterns I downloaded from the Exchange.

Create a folder on your Desktop to use as a staging area for Patterns you are currently converting. You can name it anything you like. Mine is named '6365476' (long story).

  Section4: Extracting .package Files

Thanks to Delphy's Multi-Extractor program, Extracting the .package files from the .sims3pack files is the easiest part of this entire process.

Place all the .sims3pack files you want to extract .package files from into the staging area folder on your desktop, and then open up the Multi-Extractor.

Check the box near the bottom that says, 'Rename files on Save'.

Set the Multi-extractor to extract from and to the same staging area folder on your desktop.

Click Extract.

  The process usually only takes seconds (even if there's quite a few files), and afterward you will have both .sims3pack and .package files (with the same name) in your staging folder.

    Section 5: Editing Pattern .package Files

Here begins the slightly more complex bits of the process of making patterns usable as .package files in your game.

Open up s3pe.

In the top left corner, select 'File -> Open' and navigate to your folder with all the patterns you are converting. Select one, and click 'open'.

The very first thing we are going to do is find the Tag that reads 'ICON'. Find it, and then right-click on it, and select 'Export -> To File'.

Navigate in the window that pops up to the same staging folder you are using for the .sims3pack and .package files, then rename the image file to the same name as the pattern, and click 'Save'. Now you'll have three different types of files with the same name in your folder.

Next, find the _IMG Tag that has an Instance number beginning with 7EDD (ignore the 0x in front of everything). Most of the time, there will only be one _IMG Tag starting with 7EDD and it will end with 6CE. If there is more than one _IMG Tag that starts with 7EDD, you will need to take some different steps, outlined in Section 6: Multi-Layered Patterns. Please finish looking over steps 5 and 6 here but do not complete them if you are working on a multi-layered pattern. Instead, when you've read these steps, then skip to section 6, as the naming conventions for various layers is way more complex in a multi-layered pattern than for a single layered pattern. This section will continue as if there is only one 7EDD _IMG Tag. Once you've found the right Tag, double click on it to bring up a new window.

In this window, you'll do four things. First, check the box that says, 'Use resource name'. In the 'Name' field below, type in a unique name for this pattern. I usually just use the file name I'm already using for the pattern, because that's easier for me to keep track of and ensure it's unique. Next, click the FNV64 button next to the name field. This will generate a new number in the 'Instance' field. Fourth and last, copy the new number that was generated, omitting the 0x at the beginning (just highlight and ctrl+C). That's everything for this window. Now you can click 'OK' to close it.

Now you'll find the _XML Tag with a Type number of 0333406C (again, ignore the 0x in front of all the numbers). When you've found it, right-click on it, and choose 'notepad'. This will open up a text window in Notepad that you can edit.

Inside the text document, find the original 7EDD.....CE number. You need to replace this number with the number you copied from your edited _IMG file.

After you've pasted in the new number, look near the top of the text file for 'Res_Key' followed by a string of numbers. In some patterns, there is a space after the colon and before the last string of numbers. If you find that here, delete that space! That space is what can cause the 'materializing materials' issue that can crash Sims3 games. (If you do find it and remove the space, you'll have to do the same in the PTRN tag file. PTRN File shown in step 11.)

Finally, take a moment to look up at what the assigned category is for this pattern. Do you agree with it? If yes, choose save from the file menu, and then click the red X to close it. S3pe will bring up a notification window to tell you the resource has changed and ask if you want to committ the changes. Click yes. Move on to step 12. If you want to change the category, look at step 11 instead.

To change the category for the pattern, you will need to refer to a category list (Here is one that I made, if you want to reference it) to make sure you have the capitalization and spelling exactly right. Any mistakes will result in the pattern showing up under the 'Miscellaneous' category. In the XML file, before you save the changes, simply type the new category between the quotes. THEN you will save the XML, close it, and commit changes as directed in Step 9.

To complete the category change, or if you found the materializing materials error in your xml file, you will also need to edit the PTRN Tag. Right-click on the PTRN Tag and choose 'notepad' just like with the XML file. You'll find the category name between quotes again. Change it like you did in the XML file, remember to remove the space from the RESKey if needed, then save and close and commit just like with the XML file.

Now your edits to the .package file are complete. You will see Tags with lines through them that are the original versions of those Tags before you edited them. Just go up to the top menu in s3pe, and choose 'File -> Save'. Your .package file pattern is now ready to install.

Section 6: Multi-Layered Patterns: Extra Steps

Before starting this section, read through the first six steps of section 5 if you haven't already, and then come back here. The steps here detail differences in steps 5 and 6 from the previous section, plus extra steps that must be taken.

If your pattern has more than one _IMG Tag that starts with 7EDD, you have some extra editing to do. Please pay close attention to the instructions here, as there are more rules to follow when re-naming the _IMG Tags for multi-layer patterns than for single layer patterns. Every _IMG Tag that starts with 7EDD (They will be CF, CC, or CD when there are more) will need to be edited and re-named. Each layer requires a unique name, but also a similar name. Keep in mind the following:

Every _IMG tag must have a resource ID that is different from all the other _IMG Tags in pattern .package files that you've installed.

The re-naming requires a specific schema, to ensure the layers are displayed in the correct order in-game.

Every time you edit a 7EDD _IMG Tag, you will need to follow this up with editing the _XML file 0333406C and inserting the new resource name where the 7EDD number used to be.

Multi-layer patterns also require you to edit the non-7EDD _IMG Tags, if you are going to have more than one of them installed at a time.

Whether you edit one IMG Tag at a time and update the _XML file after each one, or edit all three and then update the _XML file is up to you. I've taken to keeping an open notepad document while editing a pattern so that I only have to edit the _XML file once.

Here's what a .package file with multiple layers looks like in s3pe:

    The BASE or bottom layer in a pattern is ALWAYS the 7EDD IMG tag ending in CE. Re-name this one first, and append a 1A to the end of your name.

 After re-naming it, click the FNV64 button to generate the new Instance number you will paste into the 0333406C _XML file. (See the previous section for images.)

For the other layers, append the same two letters to the end of your name that the original Tag contained. Make sure that aside from those two letters, the name you use for these layers is the same as for the first layer, includng capitalization and spacing! Like this:

 After re-naming each layer, be sure to click the FNV64 button to generate the new Instance numbers.

Now you need to edit the two remaining _IMG tags. I don't think the naming schema is quite so strict on these, but I also haven't tested just putting in random names, so I can't say for sure. In any case, one of these tags, the one starting with 9CC - is the RGB mask used for that pattern. The second, starting with AC9, is the Specular layer.

These _IMG tags also need to be edited inside the same _XML file as the others. You'll find the references to them underneath all other _IMG tag references, so scroll down a bit to find them.

Once again, as you re-name them, make sure you don't get them mixed up. It's important to replace the old number with the correct new number inside the XML file. I re-named mine using a similar naming scheme as the other _IMG Tags, but instead of 2 letters or numbers appeneded at the end, I added 'Mask' or 'SPEC' depending on which one I was re-naming. Using practical names like that also helps me keep track of which tag is which, even after they've been re-named and have new numbers generated.

As before, once you've typed in the unique resource name, be sure to click the FNV64 button to generate a new Instance name, which you'll paste into the XML file.

If you've been recording your new numbers in a notepad doc like me, then when you're done you'll have something that looks like this (with a couple extra references for the mask and spec tags):

Take those numbers and edit the _XML Tag as directed in steps 7 and 8 of section 5 for single layer patterns, but make SURE that you replace ALL of the IMG Tag numbers with the CORRECT replacements. Getting these mixed up will cause the layers in the pattern to display incorrectly, or might cause the pattern to display as all black, etc.

If you've been editing each IMG tag and updating the _XML in between, you'll have a lot of crossed out XML files like this when you're done (that's normal, so don't worry about it).:

Everything else for a multi-layer pattern is the same as a single-layer pattern. So look over steps 9-12 in section 5 to learn how to edit the category if desired, fix the Res Key if needed, and save the .package file with s3pe. Then you're done!

Section 7: Installing .package files to the Mods folder

 Other people have already written excellent tutorials on this, so I am going to link you to a few of the excellent tutorials that already exist:

Section 8: Testing & Finishing Touches

Assuming that you have followed every direction perfectly and correctly, there really wouldn't be a need to test out newly installed .package patterns. Since I am all too aware that I am human and constantly making mistakes or forgetting to follow a step now and then even when I know a process well, I -always- test every newly installed pattern that was added as a .package file after installation. It is recommended (though not required) that you have a separate Sims 3 folder for testing. Either way, be sure to keep your un-tested .package files in a separate folder (either in CC magic or in your Mods folder) from the rest of your .package files.

Testing is simple, just fire up your game, go into CAS - either for furniture or clothing, it doesn't matter, and find the pattern you've just installed and test it out. If it displays as expected, hurrah! File the pattern image file and backup .package file in the folders you previously created for that purpose, delete the .sims3pack (or file it along with the .package file if you prefer), and once you've closed the game again, place the .package file in its proper place in your Mods folders (or in CC Magic).

If it doesn't display as expected, you may have to go back to steps in section 4-7, and re-edit the .package file and try again.

Some more esoteric issues that I have encountered:

-The Pattern has a custom mask or specular, requiring those layers to get the same re-naming treatment as the 7EDD layers.

-The Original Pattern has the same exact original name as another pattern (the launcher doesn’t care about this, but once converted to package files it matters), requiring the Name hash to also be redone.

-Some TSR patterns I’ve encountered did not seem to have the same resources inside them, and sometimes seemed to contain no images after conversion to package file, so I was unable to convert them. If you know how… let me know!

As a note, patterns installed as .package files will not have the little purple asterisk indicating they are custom content. Instead, they'll have the blue folder just like any patterns you've re-colored and saved.
