I've been wanting to see the Maroon Bells since I first found out about it years ago. I am letting the location be know as it's the most photographed mountain range in North America, and a permit is required to visit, which limits how many people can be here. Finding a camp site this time of year is very difficult. I got super lucky and scored the last first come first serve site! I had to wait 5 days for my permit but it was totally worth it. This shot was taken at 6am on Maroon lake. It was a beautiful chilly windless morning which allowed for the mirror effect, the light was amazing and having the person fly fishing in the foreground really helps give the shot scale . The bells and the lake were glacially formed over 250 thousand years ago. The mountains are big and steep (they remind me of the Swiss alps ) overall the place gives you the feeling of being very small and is quite humbling. Two of the peeks that make up the Bells are over 14k . A lot of climbers have been killed here because of the loose rock and year round snow pack. Although the peaks are out of my reach, I hiked a lot and learned you really need to be prepared here! It's a very special place with tons of awesome hikes and lots of wildlife! Very grateful for my time in this beautiful place. It's a very special place with tons of awesome hikes and lots of wildlife! Very grateful for my time in this beautiful place. My personal favorite (click for a larger version): a series of warning signs as you approach Fox Glacier on the South Island of NZ. You can (or at least, could back in '07) walk on an easy path up to very nearly the face of the glacier. At the time, the only thing preventing you from continuing to walk right up and lick the glacier or something was a fence that was just those yellow ropes. (I don't think they were electrified or anything like that. They were more of a notional barrier.)
The signs were very clearly trying to convey to you why you should not go past the yellow ropes. Rocks may fall on your head! The glacier is calving all the time and may drop huge hunks of ice on your head! Hunks of ice calving off into the river may create huge waves that can swamp you! No, seriously, no matter how shallow it looks, do NOT go in the water at any time.
In trying to look up whether there is a more substantial barrier now or what, I found out that Fox Glacier has retreated substantially from where it ended when I was there in '07. Hard to tell, but it looks like you can no longer hike as close to the face as you once could.

I wish there was a very safe and trustworthy way to organize a local activity like hiking with you ladies... i bet y'all have some sick zip-off pants... or camelbaks with impressive capacity... or maybe even pee gadgets
