5 times fWhip really needs a break and the 1 time he actually does get to rest (feat. Smallishbeans)

(1)
The first time fWhip realized he was putting too much responsibility and work on himself, the empires server hadn't existed yet.
He was a young man, almost still a boy, fresh out of the admins academy. Studying code had been awfully hard, but very rewarding. fWhip was excited- extatic even- to start his own server, to look after a handful of people in the special ways only admin could.
He had always had the dream of creating a world that could be a safe place for all people of any kind. Hybrids, magical beings, even celestials he would welcome with open arms and a warm smile.
fWhip had to realise soon, however, that the task was not that easy or quick to be handled. Even after graduating from the admins academy, he still had to go through a lengthy process of requesting his own server, getting it approved and get permission to use the strings of code that allowed for hybrids and most magical beings to show their true forms and make use of all their abilities.
That last one seemed to be the highest burden. The specific code needed for that was hard to come by, under heavy regulations and usually wasn't given to beginner admins like fWhip. In the hands of the wrong people, that kind of world could easily become an interdimensional threat.
Proving that he had no ill intentions and that he was capable of running a server full of hybrids was near impossible. fWhip had known that when he decided what kind of server he wanted to run, but actually trying was much more exhausting than he anticipated.
But fWhip didn't give up. He couldn't give up. This was all he ever wanted to do. He had spent years and a good amount of diamonds to study at the academy, he had gotten his server approved fairly quickly, he had simply come too far to give up.
And so, he worked relentlessly, for months, day and night, getting just enough sleep to function half-normally, learning the ins and outs of all the rules, regulations and laws for hybrid servers.
In the end, he got his code approved, but not because of any of the work he put in, no. The reason he was allowed to run his sever how he intented was because an anonymous celestial - a god - had put in a word for him and insisted to the admins council that fWhip was fully capable of this job.
fWhip should be grateful. He knew he should've been. And he was, truly, he was. But he couldn't help the frustration and disappointment he felt at the fact that none of his work had been enough for the admins. The council had made it abundantly clear that fWhip wouldn't have these permissions if the unknown god hadn't stepped in.
While fWhip thanked the celestial, in all the ways he could without knowing what God exactly helped him, he still felt a little bitter.
But eventually, he let his grudge go.
(2)
The second time fWhip realized he may have been just a little too ambitious, was when he received the first applications for his new server.
He had decided to call it "empires", as the premise was to literally build a home for yourself and live together with others in a safe world, free from any oppression against magical beings, which unfortunately still seemed to be a fundamental part of many servers.
He send out a public notice to all servers and worlds who want to receive it, stating the premise of this new server and asking for applications. He had gotten 11 responses, from all across the universe, a cast so diverse he didn't know how to make it work, at first.
The first to contact him was Solidarity, or Jimmy. Jimmy was a young merling hybrid, more accustomed to the waters than the land, tho he had the ability to live in both. He'd said he'd been in hiding for about 20 years, which was most of his life at that point. Jimmy didn't state explicitly why he had been hiding, only hinting that in the world he grew up in people weren't kind to hybrids of any kind. fWhip didn't care why Jimmy had to hide, all he cared about was giving him the chance to be himself and enjoy his life, without any sort of fear from his servermates.
Accepting him as a player was a no-brainer.
The next couple of responses came fairly quickly, and most of them kept their own personal history private, only occasionally hinting at a hybrid hunt or similarly barbaric traditions. There was Lizzie, a shapeshifter who was tired of hiding her abilities, Joey, a rather secretive man who insisted on not revealing his full hybridism, other than stating it was connected to deserts somehow. fWhip thought he may be a descendant of the husks, hybrids of hostile mobs tended to get the worst treatment. (He of all people would know, he was a descendant of the netherdragons after all, a species of hostile mobs that were deemed dangerous enough to be driven to complete extinction.)
There was also GeminiTay, a truly remarkable deer hybrid. Along with her hybrid status, she also submitted a portfolio of builds and other creative work she had done and to say fWhip was in awe wouldn't cut it close at all. The photos were stunning, the choice of blocks and the way Gem had used them were unique and quite simply perfect.
Then there was Shubble, a young witch who seemed a little timid in her first applications (later, fWhip would find out that Shubble wasn't timid, but rather anxious about not being accepted), she insisted over and over that she was a nice witch, with no intentions of harming anyone.
The next person came as a huge surprise to fWhip. His full, official name was Dangthatsalongname, but he was far more commonly known as Scott or Smajor. fWhip had heard of him before, of course he had. He truly believed there was not a single person over the age of 14 who hadn't heard of Scott at least once.
To be all honest, fWhip didn't even know how Scott had gotten as famous as he was. Nowadays, he did plan and host the Minecraft Championship, one of the most popular shows of all time with fans all over the uni- and multiverse.
But Smajor had been a very popular figure even before then.
The reason for his interest, according to the application, was simply that: interest. He thought the concept of a save heaven for hybrids was promising and wanted to see where the server would go. fWhip didn't think twice about accepting Scott. He might not have thought once, even.
Then there were Katherine and Pearlescentmoon, two women who were mostly looking for new friends. The next two applications came from Pixlriffs, a name fWhip had stumbled across sometimes on the rare occasion he wanted to delve more into redstone, but he seemed like a nice person who held a personal and genuine interest in learning about different hybrids and didn't want to pass up any opportunity to make them as a whole group feel more welcomed and accepted.
The other application was from MythicalSausage, an elytrian, who fWhip actually had expected to apply. Sausage had tried to learn code and even attended the admins academy for a while, but he went off to learn about building instead after getting his moderator degree. fWhip had shared a few courses with him at the beginning of his time in the admins academy and the two had tried to keep in touch after.
And then there was the last application. This one struck fWhip as a little odd. The man who submitted it was called Smallishbeans, but preferred to go by Joel. He was, according to his application, fully, completely, 100% human and, unlike Pixlriffs, he wasn't a scientist and had no interest in learning about hybrids or their culture. fWhip was hesitant to accept him at first, so he went out to meet him in person.
Upon meeting him, however, all of fWhips worries eased away. There were many reasons as to why. The first and most obvious were the giant, golden, shimmering wings that spread out behind Joel. The second was well- he was funny. Really funny, and nice to talk to outside of jokes, too. And, apparently, he had heard about the server through his wife- Lizzie, the shapeshifter, who fWhip had already accepted onto his world.
The most peculiar thing about Joel however was that he hadn't lied on his application- as soon as he entered the empires server, fWhip asked of he could check his code, and Joel agreed. fWhip was just plain curious about Joels biology, since nothing except for his wings indicated him not being human. And that is when he found out- Joel was, like he had said, 100% genuine human. No hybrid status or any magical properties could be found in his code at all.
Finding a way to house all these different players with their specific needs and adjustments to their unique physiology and biology proved to be very difficult. But, after a bit of troubleshooting, fWhip managed.
(3)
At the third time, the health of all his players and fWhips own was in danger.
Somehow, a demon had found its way onto the empires server. It was a demon of corruption and hatred, the corrupted files it left behind in the code of the world were all named "Xornoth" so that is what fWhip referred to the demon as.
Demons came in many different forms, with various ways and intensity of impact. A lot of them were harmless, only some were out for mischief and even fewer were actually hostile.
fWhip didn't mind demons. He was born and raised in the nether realm, where many demons found their home. fWhips family had been taken from him at a young age due to the hunt of nether dragons and a small village of fire demons took him in when he was around 7 years old. fWhip liked the demons, and he was quite familiar with their language and culture.
So, he tried to contact the demon in his world, Xornoth, to calm him down and explain that he was not in danger, that he had no reason to attack, since demons are generally welcomed on the empires server.
However, Xornoth refused to communicate with fWhip. The only response he got was after he spoke in the demons native tongue and it was just a very angry "leave me alone" spat out like it was venom.
fWhip was confused, to say the least. There was no reason for this demon to act hostile towards him or his players. There was no reason for Xornoth to corrupt the server files and spread red tentacles around.
And that's when the demon started corrupting the players codes.
Joey was first, then came Pixlriffs, Sausage and eventually, Scott. The worst fate however had Joel. The demon had managed to corrupt his memory files, making him oblivious to the threat lurking at every corner.
After Scott properly lost his mind, convinced that the only way to get rid of Xornoth was his own demise, fWhip decided he needed to put end to this.
The corruption had spread too far into the server by that point. Rescuing it was simply impossible. The only option fWhip had was to burn it all. To destroy ever last bit of code in this world, transfer his players onto a new one and shattering the old server into millions of little pieces.
And so, that's exactly what fWhip did. He made blood rain from the skies, forced the oceans to drain itself and every bit of corrupted water, shattered the earth hard enough to snap entire palaces in two, let fire rain on the lands and blew up his own empire until nothing was left but smoking ashes of the buildings that once stood as his pride and joy.
That was the end of the first server he created. That was the day fWhip found out just how far his powers could go if he needed them to. That was when the admins council recognised his talents and classified him as one of the highest ranking admins in the multiverse. That was when not only the gods, but also the watchers found an interest in him.
Later in his life, fWhip would come to learn that most admins did not have the power to pulverise their own worlds to ashes as they pleased, that his powers went far beyond that of even Xisuma, who was long known to be the most powerful admin of them all.
But that knowledge wouldn't come for a long, long time.
(4)
The fourth time nearly killed fWhip.
His hand was moving on its own, reflexively catching himself on the cave wall. The world around him was spinning, fWhip felt dizzy and nauseous, his knees were shaking, his whole body shivering.
How had it come to this? fWhip liked to think he didn't know. He liked to think there was no particular reason, perhaps he had just gotten sick down in the cold, wet caves.
But he couldn't pretend, couldn't lie to himself any longer. He needed a break. His body was screaming at him, begging him to sleep, to rest. But fWhip- he couldn't.
He couldn't allow himself to do that. There were things to do, versions to be updated, mods to be checked, code to check and repair, and fWhip was alone. He was the only one who could do this job for the empires server. He was the only admin on the server, the only one who had access to the server code, the only one who was keeping the server running and stable.
12 people relied on him now- and his own life depended on it too, of course. He couldn't stop. He couldn't take a break, he couldn't.
No matter how much he should.
That's why he let himself fall down to sit in the cave, placed a couple more torches to keep monsters away and opened the right windows to start his check-up routine.
The server seemed to be doing okay. A few bug fixes, but nothing out of the ordinary, nothing unusual, nothing he couldn't deal with.
The only thing he could find that was concerning, was that one of his players seemed to be in bad health.
fWhips vision blurred, the lines of codes sliding and slipping around, his eyes unfocused. His head was pounding, his chest was heaving, lungs were burning. But he needed to see who's stats had dropped so low, needed to see what they needed and get it to them as quickly as possible.
He needed to help his player. That was his duty as admin, that was his job. fWhip needed to fulfill that duty.
He forced his eyes to focus in the player name. With much effort he could deciffer it, only to find that it was his own.
It was him who's health had declined so rapidly, him who needed help, who needed to rest and sleep and heal. It was him who was hurt.
That was the last realisation fWhip made before his eyes slipped shut, exhaustion taking hold of his body, forcing him to rest finally.
He woke the next day, minutes away from being devoured by a zombie. He attempted to fight it, but soon found he couldn't lift his sword, his arms far too weak still. So, he did the only thing he could do: run. As fast as his legs would take him, as close to his house as possible.
It took entirely too long, but he eventually got home. He managed to gulp down some soup- more solid food was not an option at that moment- before he collapsed onto his bed, falling asleep immediately.
(5)
The fifth time, someone noticed.
The fainting happened more frequently now. fWhip knew it was only a matter of time before someone would find out about it.
And he was decidedly not looking forward to it. He didn't want to worry his players, didn't want them to think he was weak or incapable of his job. All things considered, all of his conditions taken into account, he was doing- he was doing good.
fWhip repeated it to himself like a mantra. He was doing good. He was doing the right thing by not giving up, never giving in. He was doing good. He was good. fWhip was good.
And yet...
Yet...
He had meant to visit Joel, more of a routine visit than anything else. To make sure that he and Stratos were doing alright. He had felt the feeling of fainting creeping earlier that day, but thought he would hold it off a little longer.
When he took a pause next to one of the buildings in Lower Stratos, one hand on the building wall, taking in a deep breath, fWhips knees suddenly buckled.
He fell towards the house wall, barely able to catch himself before he slid down onto the ground and stayed there. He could feel himself struggling to get up again, to open his eyes again, just for another second, before he was out cold.
When he woke up again, bright lights shone down onto him, causing fWhip to squint his eyes and blink rapidly against the tears in his eyes. He moved one hand to shield his eyes from the light. Then, he noticed a pounding headache plaguing him, feeling like someone was bashing his head repeatedly against a wall. Sharp spikes of pain cursed through his body every now and then.
fWhip groaned loudly, rolling around in what was far more comfortable than the ground had any right to be.
"fWhip?" Joel's voice sounded just a little too distant, but fWhip would recognise him anywhere. He makes a low humming noise in response. "fWhip, can you try to uncover your eyes, please?" fWhip groaned again, but slowly complied, turning back around and blinking heavily. "Is the light too bright?" He nodded as best as he could. He heard Joel move around a little, and then the light was turned down little by little until fWhip stopped blinking as heavily. His eyes adjusted to the knew light level and he could make out a white mattress that he was laying on.
Joel came back into his view, shrunken down to average human height, sitting down on the edge of the bed. He took a deep breath. "Can you talk right now?" fWhip took a moment to register the words. He opened his mouth to answer that yes, of course he could. But his vocal chords gave out on him. He closed his mouth again, a slightly guilty expression on his face as he shook his head.
"Alright. Alright, that's okay." Joel reassured, moving closer to fWhip. "I'll ask you a few questions okay? They'll be very simple." He held out his hands to fWhip, palms up. "If you want to say "yes" touch my right hand. This one." He lifted his right hand. "For "no", touch the left one." He lifted the other hand. "Can you do that for me?" fWhip reached out to touch Joel's right hand 'yes'.
Joel sighed in relief. "Okay, perfect. Thank you fWhip. First question: does anything hurt?" right hand. 'yes'. Joel nodded. "Can you show me where it hurts please?" fWhip pointed to his head. "Head? You have a headache?" Right hand again, 'yes'. "Alright. I will get you some medicine soon. my next question: can I help you with anything else?" left hand: 'no'. Joel nodded again. "Good, okay. I'll go get some medicine now. Don't move."
With that, he walked out the doors.
fWhip tried to move into a sitting position and after a little struggle, he succeeded. Luckily, he didn't have to wait long for Joel to return.
"I've got you some healing positions and an insta health one." Joel explained as he gently sat down at the edge of the bed. He handed one of the potions to fWhip. "Let's start with health to kick-start things, then get a healing potion in you." fWhip managed a small nod, reaching out to take the bottle. He took it from Joel and carefully opened it up, taking small sips until the bottle was empty.
He could feel the potion starting to kick in right away. The headache dulled a little and his throat felt a lot less raw than before.
fWhip looked at Joel when he handed him the bottle back and smiled. "Thank you." He said, his voice still very rough, but at least he could talk again. Joel visibly relaxed at the sound of it. "Oh bright stars I'm so glad that helped." He looked genuinely relieved. "Alright, let's get some more potions in you now, drink slowly and remember these take a while to fully show their affect, so don't drink too many." fWhip carefully downed two more potions under Joel's watchful eyes. When the second bottle was empty, fWhip started to properly feel his legs again. He hadn't even noticed that they'd gone numb, but now, slowly, a soreness settled into his joints that he was certain would stay for a while. He closed his and sighed.
A gentle weight pressed down on one of his knees. When he opened his eyes, he could see Joel's hand there. The man himself looked at fWhip carefully, worry still very clear on his face. "What... What was that about?" He asked. "I got worried when you didn't show up to our meeting on time so I went to see where you were. I searched the Goblands first, but came back when I couldn't find you." Joel sighed heavily. "You're lucky the villagers down in Lower Stratos found you and caused a bit of a commotion, otherwise I would've never found you." fWhip could feel heat rise to his face. He hadn't meant to be a bother to Joel, or to anyone. He shrugged lightly and looked away from Joel. "I just.... I just overworked myself a little. With all the admin stuff, you know? It happens, it's no big deal."
An uncomfortable silence fell over them and stretched over a few seconds. When Joel spoke again, his voice was gentle and soft. "fWhip... You really shouldn't push yourself this hard." fWhip sighed. "I know that, okay? I just..." He trailed off, staring at the ceiling for a second or two. He closed his eyes again and slumped back into the pillow behind his back. "I'm the only one on this server who knows code, so I have to manage everything by myself. Keep the server running, keep the mods and datapacks running, making sure everything stays stable, you know that sort of thing. There's a lot of daily tasks I've got to do, before I can even begin to think about doing anything lore-wise." fWhip sighed once again.
"And then I also have to build and take care of an empire, do business trips for trading, try to keep up with everyone else's lore so I know where my help might be needed more. Sausage has been causing me so much extra work and stress with all his dimension hopping and what not, it's been awful trying to keep this server together." Joel's hand moved on his knee now, rubbing in small circles that helped fWhip take a deep breath. "It's just a lot to do. I don't exactly have time to-" fWhip suddenly blushed a little out of embarrassment. "Ah forget that one." Joel scoffed. "I don't think I will forget about it. Go on, please, you don't have time for what?"
fWhip didn't meet his eyes when he said:
"I don't really have time to look after myself anymore."
Joels breath hitched at the words. His mind was racing a million miles per hour, he was extremely worried about his friend. "fWhip- oh, fWhip..." Joel's wings shuffled nervously. "I- can I hug you? I really want to hug you right now." fWhip nodded slowly and immediately found himself embraced by the other. He carefully wrapped his arms around Joel's waist, mindful of the wings, and smiled softly. Both of Joel's wings fluttered a little, then they spread slightly, as much as the room would allow, and moved to wrap gently around fWhip as well.
They stayed like that for a few minutes, until Joel slowly moved back and sat down again. One of his wings folded behind him again, but the other stayed where it was, curled around fWhip and pressing ever-so-lightly against his back.
(+1)
And then, finally, came a time where fWhip could actually allow himself to relax.
The timing was... Bad, to say the least. When Grian had contacted fWhip and asked him if he was interested in a collab with Hermitcraft, he had agreed immediately. Now, there was an interdimensional portal on his server that warped reality around itself and was the most fragile and unstable piece of code fWhip had ever layed eyes on. He spend countless hours by the rift, even went so far as to build a small house near it whe he could watch it easily. fWhip was more than happy to deal with this portal temporarily if it meant he could see his friends for a while, but it was increasingly more work he had to do.
Needless to say, he hadn't found time to look after the Goblands or come to talk to the other players recently. Especially since Sausages dimension hopping had been getting worse as well, leaving Sanctuary more and more unstable too. So fWhip had been spending more and more time travelling between the rift and Sanctuary, doing his best to make sure the server wouldn't collapse in on itself at either places.
The only comfort he ready got was that Stratos happened to be close to Sanctuary. Joel came to visit Sausage quite often, it seemed, mostly with their child, Hermes. However that happened. fWhip had decided long ago he wouldn't ask.
Most of the time when he came to Sanctuary, Joel was there. fWhip wasn't overly comfortable with letting the entire server know how much he was struggling to keep up with admin work nowadays, and Joel was the only person who knew he had struggled much before. So it was easy for him to spot the signs again.
fWhip realized after a while that Joel was seemingly perfectly timed to arrive in Sanctuary whenever he did, too. He was sure that Joel was keeping an active eye on him and his health to make sure he wouldn't collapse on him again. Somehow, fWhip thought it was quite endearing.
One day, when he was in Sanctuary, Sausage himself wasn't there, but Joel came flying from Stratos anyway. He landed next to fWhip and smiled brightly at him. "It's a wonderful day! It's perfect for a little walk, don't you think?" fWhip chuckled. "It's always nice in Sanctuary." Joel hummed. "Sure, sure. Say, have actually seen Sanctuary yet? You're always working when you come here. It's a beautiful place, I'd love to give you a tour."
fWhip wasn't dumb. He knew what Joel was doing- trying to get fWhip to take a break. He smiled and shook his head fondly. "Alright, alright, you win this time." He carefully closed the windows of code he was working on and pocketed his communicator. "Show me around then, but don't make it too long. Sausage dimension hopping had left this area a little... wonky." Joel laughed and slung an arm around fWhips shoulder, dragging him along. "Wonky, ey? That sounds like a lot of work for you." fWhip groaned as he walked next to Joel and ran a hand through his hair in frustration. "You have no idea, my friend."
They ended up walking around Sanctuary for longer than fWhip would've liked. The entire time, Joel kept asking him about his work and how stressful it had gotten. He seemed genuinely worried about fWhip, so the admin had sighed in resignation and tried his best to calm Joel down, assuring him that he would tell Joel if it got as bad as it did before.
At the end of the tour, Joel dragged fWhip over to a bench and sat them both down. Joel stretched his arms and sighed. "I've been thinking." Joel started. fWhip snorted. "Oh that's dangerous." Joel rolled his eyes and waved him off. "Right, whatever. You know how I'm human?" fWhip nodded. "Yeah, I know. I'm admins can see that sort of thing in a player code. It's weird tho, I mean you've got wings. I'm pretty sure other humans don't have those." Joel chuckled. "No wings are not a very human thing. I don't really like to talk about my heritage, it makes me a little uneasy. I did something a while ago, couple years back, that my family and most of our kind didn't like." He sighed and leaned back on the bench. "I have the power to mask my identity however well I please. The wings- I've always liked them, so I kept them when I ran away from home, but I made it so my code would say I'm human." fWhip stared at him.
"So wait, so you're... not human?" Joel shook his head. "I'm not. I don't want people to know. Lizzie knows, but no one else does. But... I think I can help you. With admin work, I mean. My kind have a knack for code and if you're willing to give some special permissions, we could split the workload so you won't have to deal with everything all alone." fWhip sat up straight and looked Joel directly in the eyes. "Joel I'm gonna need you to explain that one." Joel took a deep breath and closed his eyes. "I know. I'm- I'm a celestial." fWhip blinked in confusion and perhaps shock. "A ... A celestial?!"
Joel nodded. "Yeah. I was born a god. Like, an actual god. If you're curious, my domain is rain, but my powers also cover smaller bodies of fresh water and, to a certain extend, fertility. Like, fertile soil, not the- other kind." fWhip stared at him for a long second. "Okay, okay, wow. That's- actually that makes a lot of sense."
Joel smiled and finally opened his eyes again, looking at fWhip from the side. "If you're up for it, I'd love to be a moderator for you. You know, help out with server things and all that stuff. I did go to admins school, I didn't have much to do after I left the celestial realm, and I have an admins' degree in player code sciences." fWhip could feel his eyes going wider. "Oh wow, okay. That's- that'd be super helpful, actually." Joel perked up at his words. "So that's a yes?" fWhip nodded. "Yeah, yeah. That's a yes. I- void I can finally actually sleep again-" fWhip groaned and sank back into to bench. Joel chuckled. "Yeah, you can rest as much as you need. I'll be here to keep everyone alive in the meantime."
fWhip smiled. "Before I give you the permissions officially, I have one more question. You don't have to answer if you don't want to." Joel nodded next to him and leaned back on the bench as well. "Alright, shoot." "What did you do? What happened that pissed off the gods so much you needed to... flee?" Joel suddenly laughed loudly. "Well, there was this admin, you see, awfully young that fella. Was fresh out of the academy and wanted to jump into server business right away." Joel sighed, as if he was remembering a fond memory. "I can see glimpses of the future, you know, being a god and all. I saw what an outstanding admin he would become and I had no doubt in his abilities as an admin. The guy wanted to build this massive project, taking care of hybrids of any kind on his server. The admins council didn't approve. I couldn't believe they'd put that little trust in someone who I already knew was more than capable of his job." fWhip suddenly shot up off the bench. "Wait- wait, pause!" Joel giggled.
"Us gods, we're not supposed to mingle with mortal all that much, you know? But I couldn't help myself. I was furious at the council, so I went down there and gave them my piece of mind. I didn't ask them to allow the admins request, but I told them how stupid they are and how wrong their decision was. They changed their mind afterwards."
fWhip stared at Joel in disbelief. "THAT WAS YOU?!" he yelled. "ALL- all this time?! It was you- oh deep void! I can't believe-" fWhip suddenly moved forward and pulled Joel in a right hug. "Thank you so much, Joel. You have- bright stars above- you have no idea how much that meant to me." Joel smiled and returned the hug. "I'm glad you got their permission in the end. You deserved it."

Heya! I‘ve spent my morning reading through your website and low-key your blog here and wanted to say that the way you describe Loki feels so weirdly familiar? like him being your Mad Muse resonated in a way with my experience as an artist that is somewhat similar to yours which got me thinking. some ideas or concepts come seemingly out of nowhere and get stuck until i get them out and many of them are to do with the human condition but also gender and living the true self kinda? but more like these characters feel actually alive and thus not wanting me as an author or painter to control them but to observe and conserve these observations. it often feels like a swirling mass of chaos in my mind with me racing behind trying to grasp what i see/feel (its all really vague and words are more feelings of the essence of whats said.)
If i understand correctly You often make a distinction between chaos and his trickery (i am so sorry in advance for possible weird-wording things, or completely misunderstandig you >.< english is my 2nd language) and for me personally, i delight in chaos and trickery, though not in a hurting others way, more in a good hearted fun for the shits and giggles kind? but i love chaos in the way i love a symbol, since chaos for me means change in a rather radical way but without any judgement. Things change and get chaotic but chaos itself feels more like possibility?
I have a bonus Loki-Story for you: one time he (i assume) probably annoyed a busdriver with a red light and i caught my bus after asking any god willing to help me catch that bus (it was urgent lol). I was so out of breath but the second i could breathe properly again i asked who to thank for the red light and i kid you not, i drove by a wall with a graffiti that simply said: Loki. made me chuckle ugly but i gave him the best part of my steak never the less, gotta say thanks!
There have been several of these happenings with other gods (Thor and Odin mainly but i caught a whiff of freya once while baking i think?) so now im at the point where i feel i should finally listen. Though i know nothing about working with the gods or magic ive always felt a pull to runes and even got an engraving set to make some myself.
After reading your introduction about deity work i kinda confirmed what i thought regarding knowing the basics of magic (mainly i wont use runes or magic until i know how to do it safely with warding and shielding, which brings me to my question:
Do you have any open source or freely online available sources for learning the basics of magic and getting familiar with deity work? (possibly even for absolute total beginners who boarder on dumb - hello adhd) Like how to shield/ward yourself and your house and how to cleanse. Same with sharpening the clairsenses. It sounds kind of easy when reading but when i try to actually do that i feel helpless and dont know where to start or what to do :(
I often see these things stated (on your page and in the asks you answer but also on any site regarding these topics as well.Saw this also on sunnyway when tring to read up on runes) but never really explained in a way thats friendly for beginners, and when i try googling (i am chronically out of moneys so i guess that has to do with it) all that comes up is wicca related stuff that makes me feel icky (the norse gods are generally the only pantheon and norse religion mostly the only religion that doesnt feel icky to me but that might be my catholic upbringing? the norse gods feel so healingly friend-shaped that it spooked me for years but im staring to fall in love with that. i do get its not always like that but having a kind of mutually respectful relationship with the gods is kind of all i wanted when i grew up). Im also too new i guess to be able to discern between norse practicioners and white supremacists and dont want to end up on a nazi page and learning from them :/ (Here in germany i mostly saw nazis and white supremacists wearing norse symbols which i guess kept my spanish-libanese-migrant ass away from norse paganism for so long bc i thought theyre the only ones who practice it and i really do not like the fuckers)
Thank you in advance if you decide to answer this! (And i apologize for the sheer length of this ask!!)
Sorry this took me so long to get back! If I’m not mistaken, you’re basically asking how to move from “theory” to “practical application” with paganism, magic, and spirit/deity work.
I had to sit with this for a while because I couldn’t think of an easy answer to your question, and maybe an easy answer simply doesn’t exist. For me, everything I know and everything I believe in was built upon a combination of a few things:
Introducing myself to different branches of magical theory and trying different things, even stuff that wasn’t Norse.
Familiarizing myself with MANY different spiritual and religious practices; how they work, their ethos, their worldviews, their metaphysical philosophies, and how they differ from one another.
Finding a reputable community of actual advanced pagan practitioners who gave me the tools I needed to rely on myself and helped me troubleshoot specific things.
Identifying how my clairsenses and magical tendencies manifest and working them out like a muscle, using Tarot to help confirm or refute my interpretations of experiences.
Learning to trust myself and my judgements.
Learning what bad communities look like.
Learning what Nazi-coded language looks like.
Learning what healthy relationships look like.
Trying things and learning from both my mistakes and successes.
This stuff takes months to identify and years to cultivate, and honestly the only way to do figure it out is to expose yourself to it.
One resource I started with that IS free would be Oven-Ready Chaos by Phil Hine. This is a PDF you can google and download that introduces you to the basics of Chaos Magic. Even if you’re not a chaos magician, it provides some good metaphysical philosophies that can be applied to basically any eclectic practice. This book was also the first time magic was presented to me in a way that made a damn lick of sense.
But that’s all I really have for you, unfortunately. Someday I hope to write more about this process of magical/pagan development, but I’m not at the point where I know enough about it to do so.

Hi Lee, not sure if you've talked about this topic before, do you know much about the post-exercise metabolic window? I see a lot of conflicting discussions surrounding it. Some people seem to think it's flat out not a thing; others say that after exercise you have exactly 30 minutes, give or take in which your body is most receptive to protein etc; I see others stating that the window lasts waaay longer, around a day even. Is there an optimal time to schedule meals around a workout? Cheers
As you stated, the post-exercise metabolic window is a concept passed around in bodybuilding (and some cardio) circles as the 30 minutes after a workout that your body is “most receptive” to protein (such as a protein shake). Some go as far as to say that if you don’t take in protein, you essentially wasted your workout.
As with a lot of topics on health and fitness, there is a hefty dose of magical thinking when it comes to building muscle mass. This has been dubbed “broscience”, but it’s not unlike any other superstitious belief (including religious ones like prayer) that humans exhibit. Adding muscle mass is a slow task that one must be regularly committed to in order to succeed; if there’s any possible way to increase the rate at which is happens, you’d better believe people will jump on it. I definitely was one of those people. Despite being a skeptic to a lot of supplement claims and other broscience, I would sometimes find myself stuck in a routine of superstition, consuming pills and powders like I was making some kind of muscle-building potion in hopes I could “cast a spell” on my muscle fibers to get those bitches to grow.
We’re usually of the opinion of “Better safe than sorry” when it comes to muscle building, which is why people can know it’s broscience but still pass it on to anyone trying to add muscle mass.
So what do the studies say?
Does the post-exercise metabolic window even exist?Yes, but not in the way that you are worried about. The post-exercise metabolic window not only exists but lasts for about 48 hours, according to studies like this. If you check the study, however, you will notice that it’s not a consistent window, but that there is a higher spike within the three hours immediately post-workout, and it slows down a bit from there, petering out after 48 hours.
Surely, you think, it must be beneficial to consume protein in that three hours, right?
Yes and no. Muscle breakdown is the biggest cause of concern to take advantage of the post-exercise metabolic window, but it seems that’s only really a case if you’re doing fasted exercise (that is, exercising first thing in the morning without having consumed anything but water), and even then the breakdown doesn’t happen within the first 60 minutes of post-exercise, so you have time to eat something. If you’re working out later in the day, after you’ve had some food, it seems that the muscle breakdown isn’t really a factor.
What about glycogen? Yes, you absolutely use glycogen during your workout, especially during workouts involving HIIT, but that starts replenishing with your next meal so an immediately post-workout glycogen booster (like a sugary electrolyte beverage or one of those high carb powders advertised to cardio lovers) is not really a big deal (unless you plan on working out intensely again later that same day). One study found that more intense exercise breaks down muscle glycogen faster than less intense exercise, but overall the amount of glycogen broken down was about the same.
Some of you might be thinking, “Aren’t these studies a little small?” and I am inclined to agree with you. Much more research should be done on the subject.
Others might be thinking, “These studies weren’t done in seasoned lifters, so will these apply to me?” There’s this concept of “n00b gains”, which is this idea that newbie lifters will absolutely gain more muscle mass than seasoned lifters, and that this somehow translates to “studies done on non-lifters are basically bullshit and not useful to seasoned lifters”. The problem with n00b gains is I can’t actually find studies supporting or negating the concept. Everything I find online is anecdotal. Some of these are simply people who lost fat due to finally paying attention to their diet and exercise, and as a result they appear to be more jacked but are really just “revealing” the muscle they had hidden under that fat. Another problem with n00b gains not being scientifically tracked is that we can’t be sure of how much fat vs muscle was actually gained. Especially for those starting off slim, new lifters tend to increase their food intake, so some of what they eat will end up as muscle mass but some may end up as fat.
“Wouldn’t they know the difference?” you may ask. The unfortunate fad is that just as “obese female” is now called “curvy”, “obese male” (and fitness-minded “obese female”) is now called “muscular”. They even made fun of this way back in the day on South Park.
I remember working at a supplement company and was recommending some different kinds of workouts (to give a customer some examples) and she told me she can’t do squats anymore because after one set of squats she’ll gain five pounds of muscle mass. I explained what was actually happening (people usually overeat to “compensate” for exercise, muscle swelling can occur after a workout) and she was adamant about it. I told her she needed to hit up the nearby medical research university to have studies done because maybe her special genetics could help cure muscle atrophy in patients with things like MS. I think she got the message.
There also may be a limit on how much muscle we can realistically gain and maintain, which might be a factor in seasoned bodybuilders. I’m just throwing this idea out there as a possibility to explain relative beginner gains, as I cannot find any evidence supporting this concept.
While we’re on anecdotes, what about the people who claim that adding in that immediate post-workout shake has helped them? They’re likely those that have been nicknamed “hard gainers”, which are really just people who don’t lift proper and/or don’t eat enough, so if they fall into the second category, of course adding in that extra bit of calories and protein will have them seeing results...but it isn’t due to the timing, rather the overall caloric/protein intake.
In short, the metabolic window after exercise only matters in regards to protein if you exercised in a fasted state and only matters in regards to glycogen if you’re going to do another intense workout later that day. That’s what the research shows at this time.

How To Get A Bothersome Spirit To Leave You Alone
Avery Hart
New witches worry about encounters with spirits a lot. I’ve seen it so many times, a witch is all excited and ready to jump into the craft but their fear of attracting spirits that they don’t know how to deal with ends up getting in the way and holding them back. This is such a shame! While spirits might seem scary up front, the vast majority of them are nothing to worry about.
Not convinced? I’ll break it down for you. We are both physical and spiritual being residing in a physical plane of existence. We can access spiritual planes without much trouble but our natural state of being is here in the physical world. Spirits are purely spiritual beings, they have no physical manifestation so their grounding in this reality is very weak. What this means is that you are almost always going to be stronger than any spirit you encounter here in this plane!
Most spirits know this and the ones that are mischievous will try to convince you otherwise. They’ll resort to scare tactics and fear-mongering to make you feel like you don’t have any power or like they can hurt you. But the only way they actually get any power over you is if you give up. Sadly this works a lot of the time! People get freaked out by a spirit who’s all bark and no bite and they end up in a compromised situation simply because they didn’t know any better. We’re not letting that happen to you.
It’s time that you learned exactly how to deal with a spirit that won’t leave you alone. Whether it’s a confused ghost, a mean-spirited apparition, or a trickster trying to one-up you, these steps will help you kick that nasty spirit right out of your life with no fuss, no mess, and no freaking out.
Why Spirits Get This Way
There are tons of reasons why a spirit might pester you. New witches are especially prone to picking up errant spirits because they have less control over their energy (which can look like a beacon to a wandering spirit) and they have an air of naivety about them. This combination can make some spirits feel very welcomed. Particularly shy spirits can often gravitate to newer witches because the fresh, open energy and lack of preconceived notions can feel less threatening. Unfortunately, this same open and unsullied energy can also look like gullibility to not so friendly spirits.
If you feel comfortable trying to help the well-meaning spirits that find their way to you, that’s great! You can learn a lot from these beings. If that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea though, don’t sweat it. You do NOT have to deal with any spirit, friendly or not, who shows up asking you for help. There are tons of other witches out there who are more prepared for this kind of work and these spirits can find those other witches just as easily as they found you. Protecting your boundaries should never make you feel bad. Decide what you are and are not comfortable with and stick to your guns when those boundaries get challenged.
How To Handle Bothersome Spirits
Now onto the actual practicalities of getting rid of a spirit that won’t stop bothering you. While many spirits will accept a polite but firm “No, thank you” and be on their way, others will not. In situations where a spirit won’t go away even after you expressed that they are not welcome, it’s time to witch up and show that spirit that you’re not joking around.
Cleanse the space
Cleansing your space and yourself should always be step one. This ensures that you’re not having to deal with errant energies, negative feelings, or magical sludge while trying to get rid of the spirit. it also ensures that you’re not being influenced by the spirit in any way, many spirits can impact how you think and feel and this can have a marked effect on your actions! Cleansing will cut through all of that nonsense and give you a clear space and a clear head.
Put Up A “Not Welcome” Sign
After cleansing, putting up a “Not Welcome” sign for spirits can help reinforce the fact that you are not interested in visitors and that any spirits who have overstayed their welcome can hit the road ASAP. How do you create one of these signs? I like to use sigils.
Remember, when creating a sigil the intention needs to be phrased in the positive because negatives won’t translate well. Saying something like “spirits are not welcome” won’t work. Instead, try a phrase like “spirit free zone” or "spirits go away". Create your sigil and then find a way to display it near or on your front door. The best part about this kind of sign is that it does not have to be visible! You can take some charged water and draw the sigil in the water on your front door if you want. This method may need to be repeated about once a month but it should get the message across to wandering spirits fairly well.
Banish The Intruder
If your cleansing and “Not Welcome” sign haven’t deterred the spirit, it’s time to break out the big guns and banish the intruder. You’ve told the spirit it’s not welcome and that you don’t want it around, now it’s time to back that up with some action. The reason a lot of spirits don’t take off when you tell them to is that they don’t actually think you’re going to do anything about it if they don’t. You need to prove them wrong. Remember, being a pushover in your spiritual life is like hanging a big sign around your neck inviting every ill-mannered spirit within a mile to come right on in. You do NOT want to be living in a house swamped with annoying (or worse, aggressive) spirits so putting your foot down in this situation is an absolute must.
There are tons of banishing spells out there and I have a few that will do the trick perfectly. Choose one that works for you and get to casting.

How To Make Black Salt & What It’s Used For
Ward Your Space
If you’re worried about this happening again, then you will need to ward yourself and your house. Thankfully, warding is a pretty easy skill to learn and it tends to be effective on many layers. Not only will it prevent most spirits from being able to get to you but it will also send a very firm message to them that you are not messing around when you say you don’t want spirits to pop in. This gives the very clear impression that you are not naive, not messing around, and not likely to be intimidated by a mischievous spirit.
I have two excellent wards available to choose from, both work really well against spirits although I personally prefer the home guardian when warding a space against spirits.
The Ring of Fire: An Elemental Spell For Protection
How to Create A Home Guardian
Personal Protection Spell
For warding yourself when you’re out of the house, I recommend a simple personal protection ward. This spell is so potent because it is repeated every day. This regular repetition layers intent and energy until it is an impenetrable shield around you. Don’t worry though, this spell is about as simple as they come!
1. Start by finding an item that can encircle you that you won’t mind wearing every day. This can be a necklace, a bracelet, a belt, or even a ring. It is important that you’re comfortable wearing it EVERY day though! In a pinch, you can also just tie a length of yarn around your ankle as well.
2. Every day when you wake up, put your item on and as you do hold the intention that it will protect you from harm. You can say an incantation out loud, visualise the item creating a shield around you, or simply hold the thought in your mind.
3. Wear the item any time you are out of the house (if your house is protected) or if you’re travelling or can’t ward your living space, wear it all the time and only take it off while showering to give you a chance to put it back on again afterward.
4. Every time you put your necklace or other item on, you will be increasing the strength of the spell. After even just a week this provides you with ample protection that will only continue to grow stronger as you continue repeating it.
These steps are all it takes to live your life without worrying about spirits. Remember, if you don’t want to deal with spirits, you don’t have to! It’s also fine to make space for yourself when you need it, even if you don’t want a spirit-free life all the time, sometimes life gets crazy, mental health struggles happen, or you’re just too plain worn out. It’s ok to put up boundaries and protect your space during these times as well! Always put yourself first in the craft and don’t be afraid to set firm boundaries to keep yourself safe, healthy, and happy in your craft.
Ever wondered if you’re really prepared to handle the dangers of the craft?
Or maybe you've recently come face to face with these dangers and you're determined to be better prepared next time.
Either way, you need to learn magical defence. This set of skills is absolutely paramount for new witches, witches looking to take their work to the next level, and even witches who are just looking for a little more peace and quiet in their spiritual lives. The craft doesn't have to be dangerous, stressful, or traumatic!
In Defensive Magic For Beginners, I’ve created a step by step learning path that will give you the boost you need to start defending yourself confidently today.

Herbal Energetics or Not?
Herbal Energetics or Not?
5/4/2016

by Melissa Laurita Kohl
I learned herbalism through the American folk tradition, sitting at the feet of those herbalists, like Rosemary Gladstar, who raised herbalism back from the dead. They had few books, no internet, and a strong calling and passion for something that most Americans thought was crazy. Intuition, or the art of herbalism, was strong. This American tradition is beautiful. Pulled from tidbits of the European tradition that survived in the United States, broken and battered by the Inquisition, the scientific revolution, and the American Medical Association. Pulled from Native American culture, broken and battered by Europeans. Pulled from the magic and mysticism that comes from working closely with plants.
Shen Nong, the 'Divine Farmer' who taught herbalism & agriculture to the people of ancient ChinaTraditionally and historically, herbalism is used in the context of a whole system. A poetry, or way, of understanding nature, its patterns, and our place within it. Observation is focused on ways you can observe the body and the whole person with all of your senses (as opposed to peering within via scalpels or microscopes). The concept of herbal energetics comes from these traditional systems and is often based on polarities (hot/cold, damp/dry) and allopathy (treating with opposites). For me, herbal energetics and the idea of a condition being hot or cold was somehow frightening and hard to grasp. Herbally, I grew up learning that valerian was a nervine and a sedative. And it worked and worked astonishingly well using herbs according to their actions with no consideration for energetics.
Today it is very popular to believe that this folksy way of using herbalism, without that energetic context, is a lesser way. Herbalists who practice this way are lesser. I have seen many herbalists say that it is dangerous to use herbs according to their actions, in a “this for that” manner.
But I think that this is a dangerous notion. Plants work. They do. They work if you simmer leaves or if you infuse them for 8 hours with a lid on. They work if you use organic herbs or if you have to resort to Celestial Seasonings Chamomile tea. They work if you write their name down on a piece of paper and keep it in your pocket, if you carry them on you, if you rub them on your body, if you ingest them, if you call on the plant spirit and think of them, if you tincture them. Plants work because we evolved with them. Every aspect of our being is interwoven with them. Their phytochemicals need to wash our cells regularly for our bodies to function properly. We have to see them for our immune systems to function properly. We have to smell them for our cardiovascular systems to function optimally. We must be in close connection with them for our spirits to feel comfortable on this earth.
And because ingesting and using and living among plants is so intrinsic to our nature and our existence on this planet, they are generally very safe. Statistically safer than eating, driving, or taking pharmaceuticals. This does not mean that you can use them without understanding the basics of herb safety, but it does mean that if you are a folk herbalist and you know what you are doing, you will not be hurting anyone in any significant way, if at all. Maybe someone will feel like the herb you recommended is making them too dry or maybe the first herb you give them won't be their ally, but the next one will. If you are an intuitive folk herbalist, you may in fact be recommending the same herbs one would choose if examining herbal energetics in addition to herbal actions.
Rosemary Gladstar primarily teaches this folk tradition of American herbalism. There is a reason she is wildly popular and is the fairy godmother of American herbalism (or as my dear friend and fellow herb teacher Cat Pante said, “Rosemary Gladstar is the mama mack daddy of herbs.”). If she were peddling a system that did not work, I can assure you that we would not be here today having this conversation, as herbalism would likely still be stuffed in the broom closet. I think this is important to remember as politics push us closer to standardization, to alienating our brothers and sisters who don't use herbs quite the same way we do.
All that being said, I do incorporate herbal energetics into my beginner herb classes because I think it is an important and useful tool and it is easier to integrate into your practice if you learn it right from the beginning. It is also a more legal way of practicing herbalism. Technically, it is illegal for me to treat your indigestion or high blood pressure. But if I am not treating those western diseases, but instead am treating the underlying imbalance in the body, based on herbal energetics, then I am speaking and using a very non-medical model and am no longer practicing medicine without a license (hopefully). Folk herbalism works incredibly well much of the time. Unfortunately, it is in a grey area here in the United States. Using a traditional form of herbalism (like Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, Unani-Tibb, Galenic, Tibetan, or a traditional Native American or African system) can add beauty, nuance, and efficacy to your practice. But it should never bring judgment or condescension for your herbal brothers and sisters who do not.
Melissa Laurita Kohl is the lead instructor and founder of the Fungi & Flora Folkschool in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. She credits her love of herbs with growing up in NYC (where every plant was a precious gift); her mama's unbelievable Italian cooking (which infused her home with the intoxicating aroma of herbs); and her colic (which brought her chamomile). Melissa has studied Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, and western herbalism with a variety of teachers. Herb walks and herbal apprenticeships take place on her farm, where sheep, alpaca, ducks, guineas, chickens, angora rabbits, and a stray cat from Brooklyn welcome visitors.

to address this quote: "I have seen many herbalists say that it is dangerous to use herbs according to their actions, in a “this for that” manner." I think that if you're using herbs according to their "actions", you ~are~ using energetics, whether you're aware of it or not. A great example here is that I feel one of the people Iearned the most about energetics from is David Hoffmann. But David Hoffmann once told me he didn't get energetics at all. If we understand when it's appropriate to use an astringent, an aromatic, a demulcent, then (to me) that's energetic, whether the person thinks in terms of hot/cold/dry/damp or not at all. Some years ago I did a talk for the Michigan Midwives Association, and we got to talking about how they used herbs, learned from a very long folk tradition,\: "when you see this, these are the herbs you should consider". Their usage of herbs ended up being very energetic. Most of the people I know (including myself) who criticize a "this for that" use of herbs aren't thinking about when people say "take this herb for a congested head cold" or "use yarrow to help stop bleeding", but much more nebulous suggestions like "st john's wort is good for depression" or "chaga is good for cancer". I do think that working to understand energetics on a more conscious level can help avoid some pitfalls. For example, herbs commonly suggested for head colds are usually best for stuffy or leaky head colds, and many of them will aggravate someone whose head is all dry and inflamed with tight tissues. Knowing to consider this can help you avoid suggesting, perhaps, eating raw garlic, which will certainly help the infection but might aggravate the ecosystem of the upper respiratory tissues. Probably the biggest issue is that "energetics" isn't commonly taught as beginner (or, as I prefer to say, foundational) herbalism.

Hi Jim, Thank you for your comment! I have to say that I only know your teaching through your online presence, but I think you are both brilliant and hysterical and secretly you are the teacher I am most interested in studying with next (well you and Michael Tierra). I absolutely agree with what you are saying and never thought of actions in that light because I have learned them so separately from herbal energetics (through TCM and now Ayurveda). It is true that a lot of the concern comes from these more nebulous suggestions or actions like antidepressant and anxiolytic and to some extent I think it's a valid concern, but I also don't. When I studied with Rosemary Gladstar, I did learn that St. Johnswort was for depression and anxiety. I think that is entirely appropriate, especially when coming from an herbalist versus a newspaper article or as part of a list of antidepressants or nervines in a book. Folkloric herbalists know that not all herbs work for all people or all types of depression, but it could work for you. So when I learned about St. Johnswort, I learned that some people recommend it for anxiety and some people think it is contraindicated with anxiety. I learned that it probably works best blended with other nervines, exercise, good sleep, and good diet (which could all fit right into energetics). And as long as you know what you are doing (and do not recommend herbs that are contraindicated for a particular person), then worse case scenario, you might have to introduce a few different herbs or formulas before you hit the right one. But if you really know your herbs and really know the person, there is a good chance you will unconsciously sense whether or not an herb would be a good match - much like when you meet someone and think a friend would love (or hate) them. In some ways, folkloric herbalism is about creating connections between people and their plant friends - the ones who complete and heal them. Practicing within an energetic framework does not necessarily prevent this kind of error (if you want to call it that). When I studied TCM, I learned that if someone does not respond well to a formula, it gives you another clue as to what is really going on and helps you fine tune your recommendation. I do think that a system of energetics is more nuanced and more structured and is more likely to give you good results more regularly - it is inherently more teachable. I think it's like feng shui. There are two forms, one highly organized and regimented and one totally intuitive. Ayurveda, TCM, etc. are on the highly organized systemic side of things. Folkloric herbalism is on the intuitive artsy side of things. This is obviously a gross generalization, but my point is that both forms are valid and at times get to the exact same outcome. I think the reason some herbs work in some situations is partially based on energetics, but sometimes I think it is biochemistry and it might not be observable unless someone tries an herb. I have a dear friend who is very similar to me constitutionally. Valerian is my bestie, but she gets agitated and overstimulated. I don't think I could have figured that out through energetics (well, I know I couldn't but maybe someone could). I also think that certain types of individuals are more sensitive and are therefor more sensitive to herbs that are not energetically appropriate. I always eat raw garlic, even when I have a dry head cold, and I love it even though I know energetically that is not a good match. I almost always have very dry respiratory issues or sore throats if I am going to get sick. My personal choices are always pungent and dry to varying degrees - elderberry, ginger, cinnamon decoction or sage, calendula, chamomile tea or really hot spicy cayenne soup or a hot dry sauna. I am usually always ingesting water as I primarily use herbs in teas and food, but I am still not thinking about it in an energetic way. These herbs are so effective so quickly with no perceptible adverse reactions that it is hard to get myself to change my ways though rationally I believe 100% that an energetic approach is a better approach. That being said, I know a few people who are Vata (dry, cold, sensitive) who are in the Vata phase of their life (elders) and if you don't take energetics into account they will have an adverse effect. Of course, they have adverse effects from lots of herbs, foods, etc. That all being said, I do agree that learning energetics should be foundational. It makes sense and it is not complicated if you are used to it. For me, I am still wrapping my brain around some of it because I did not learn it from the get go. I took a whole year to just read and think about the doshas. This essay appeared on my computer screen because a. Herbstalk was interested in topical issues like this and b. I have run into a lot of hostility in cyber land toward this folkloric approach (of course, the internet kind of breeds hostility but that's another topic). It

[oops my comment was too long so here it is continued...] This essay appeared on my computer screen because a. Herbstalk was interested in topical issues like this and b. I have run into a lot of hostility in cyber land toward this folkloric approach (of course, the internet kind of breeds hostility but that's another topic). It had nothing to do with teachers like you, Rosalee, and Michael Tierra who teach energetic approaches to herbalism. I have nothing but respect for this way of teaching. I have also met dear respected herbalists who believe Rosemary Gladstar's program is not a good program because it does not go into herbal energetics. It feels like as we move toward either a more scientific model of herbalism or a more energetic version of herbalism we are turning our back on the herbwives and mothers and grandmothers who very much practiced in a this for that manner to keep their families safe and healthy. I primarily studied through Sage Mountain and I would not trade that for all the world. It connected me to the heart, spirituality and legacy of folkloric herbalism and gave me so many useful tools I literally became obsessed with herbalism (just yesterday I successfully treated a severe and unfortunate genital burn with absolute confidence because of that connection and faith in the power of herbs). Finally, I think pharmaceuticals are dangerous in most situations, maybe especially for those nebulous situations like depression, anxiety, and ADHD. Maybe an energetic approach would be better for these situations, but damn if St. Johnswort does not magically cure my anxiety. Ashwagandha renders my frenetic disorganized ADHD mind into something focused and powerful. No energetics needed. No harm done. All us herbies are in it together. We each use the tools and modalities that make sense to us and we need to keep sharing that wisdom. Obviously, this is another essay, but I have just spent a week outside with 50 ducklings (in fact my fingers are stiff from sitting outside on this cold spring day while I supervise a little duckling outdoor time) and it's nice to think about these big picture issues with herbalism. Again, I am very grateful for your thoughtful and insightful comment and hope to meet you in person one day! I also look forward to listening to your foundational herbcraft program on herbmentor.com once life settles down a bit. Cheers, Melissa

Folk herbalism was my first approach and I do believe it is a valid one for self treatment, family treatment, and to some extent helping those we encounter along our path. However, this past year I decided it was time for myself to dive in and expand my folk knowledge. Intuition is great if you've taken the time to really learn to use it, but if, as I hope to do some day, I work as an herbalist in what is considered a more clinical manner, having the information that backs up our intuition is helpful especially since we may need to expand beyond our favorite go to herbs because they are for some reason not right for someone else. I haven't tried every herb personally and I likely will never be able to claim the I have. As a folk herbalist, I stick with what I know. As an herbalist armed with more info such as energetics, I feel more confident taking the words of other professionals mixed with the herbs information when using it for the first time. Sometimes the reasoning that something has been done a long time isn't the best reason to continue doing it and with all the info (some good some not so good) available these days, it is nice to back up our intuition with some solid information. I have loads of respect for folk herbalists as they were my first teachers, but as an herbalist, I want to arm myself with as much knowledge as I'm able and I never want to cease learning.
