Why the "Prime Energy?"
Tumblr media
In Echoes of Wisdom, we encounter the Triforce for the first time in a long time (in its usual state, anyway). But something that stood out to me (and a lot of people, I'm sure) was the title it went by: The Prime Energy. It's not something we've heard before, so we have to wonder: why? I obviously can't give a "canon" answer, but I do have some ideas.
Energy in Echoes of Wisdom
Tumblr media
Throughout EoW, we collect little blue crystalline shapes called "energy." This replenishes the gauge that allows Zelda to use her swordfighter form. These crystals are found throughout the Still World and appear tied to Might Crystals, which also appear from the rifts (but only when they close). We use them to upgrade the sword and bow themselves.
There are two safe assumptions we can make about Energy:
Might Crystals are the "purified" form of energy or something close to it (its resemblance to bismuth "crystals" seems to hammer in this implication).
▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎
"Energy" is the essence we see Null consume in Din's tale. It appears on its own even before land and sky are built around it. Because of this and the association to might and vitality, this essence must be that of life itself. (Perhaps Zelda's role as a Priestess is what allows her to use this energy in its raw form and gain that supernatural state, unlike Link?)
How may the Triforce relate to this idea of energy?
Tumblr media
We know that Din, Nayru, and Farore go on to create the land of Hyrule (or what would become MANY Hyrules over time) to seal Null and prevent its destruction of all life. In A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, and Skyward Sword, we are told the Triforce is left behind in the wake of this world's creation (creation over the void, in the context of EoW).
The Triforce has the ability to judge those who use it (even going as far as to prevent deities from using it) and its essence speaks to Link in ALttP. Although it may not be "alive" in the same way most mortal characters are in the series, it has a will. This will knows not of good and evil, only of the traits each piece is meant to embody.
We also know that the Triforce has dominion over said world and beyond, being able to shape realms by its wish-granting and power-giving abilities. Hence, the idea of "prime." And, in Lorule of A Link Between Worlds, we can see just how much the rest of the world depends on the Triforce's existence for its energy to be sustained.
EDIT: Don't forget the Force Gems in FSA! They further emphasize the ideas above in the same way!
It's also worth noting that the Tris are tied to the idea of threes, and they are the idea of "existence" to Null's "nothingness." They reinforce the idea of the Triforce's embodiment of "being."
The "Prime Energy" is the Triforce's true name and original state - its intended title. "Then," You may ask, "Why have we called it the Triforce up until this point?"
▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎
Why the Triforce?
Tumblr media
It is after the three leave that Hylia is brought into existence with the sole purpose of protecting the Prime Energy. But there's an important detail many overlook:
Hylia doesn't know the purpose of the Triforce.
Not fully, anyway.
Yes, Hylia knows how it works - her whole plan to defeat Demise revolves around it - but she still has questions. Even with all of her memories restored, the first Zelda states that she doesn't know why the Triforce was left behind. She guesses that it was to give the people of the world Hope (perhaps even against world-destroying entities like Null, should he break free...). Even then, it's only a guess.
Doesn't it stand to reason, then, that she wasn't even given its name? After all, she was only created to understand and protect the golden power; perhaps even as an "extension" of its being, given her often implied powers over light and time magic (but that's just a personal headcanon). Perhaps "Triforce" is simply what she took to calling it, as she still could recognize that it was something beyond the nature of the mortal world. (Also, I see it reasonable that she could see Tris - she probably saw them patching rifts and drew a connection between them, which influenced the name).
And, in the thousands of years to follow, wars become waged over the Prime Energy as it is understood only as a relic: a relic meant to give ultimate power to the one who touches it.
▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎
Conclusion
Tumblr media
The Prime Energy is the true name of the Triforce, and it is the core to the many realms of Hyrule. Its nature has been misunderstood by many throughout its existence, but none of these ideas are truly false; it holds dominion over time and space while simultaneously keeping it together. It is an essence of the very concept of "life," and as such holds a sort of "will" of its own. It is the ultimate state of the Energy we see everywhere else in Echoes of Wisdom, and Hylia may not be far off - despite being a neutral force that begins and ends wars, it may just be personification of the idea that life will prevail. Although the worlds in this franchise may be scorched and healed, they are never meant to fade into nothingness like Lorule once verged. They are simply meant to be.
▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎
to those who may have scrolled to the bottom because this is unnecessarily long, it's basically just what its name was supposed to be when the three created it but then they just sort of forgot to tell hylia that or anything else lol. also it may just be a personification of existence like the fittingly-named tris.
I love love love solving little Zelda lore puzzles, I may do this again. :) I just HAD to lore dump when a friend asked me about it

Some soh stuff but mostly redone refs and goofy things, there are… more lore-related things to come. The Twili dude is not a spoiler btw, he’s practically a concept because I haven’t settled on anything for his character yet. But he kinda has a mullet and we are 2 for 2 with red-headed dudes having mullets and that includes Groose

He is furious.
Volga storms into Cia’s lair, shoving monsters and minions out of his way as his gut burns with rage. His mind is focused on only one thing, and nobody dares try and stop him as he approaches the sorceress. Cia is reclining idly on a chair as he enters, but Volga is unconcerned with whatever she’s doing, striding to her side as his chest heaves with anger.
“Oh Volga, I didn’t expect you back yet,” Cia hums, sounding only mildly interested. “Was your mission a success?”
Volga glares at her.
“You knew he was my son.”
Cia slowly blinks, and she flicks her gaze up, red eyes unreadable.
“Who?”
Volga slams his spear into the floor, a snarl escaping his lips. “The Hero. He is my son. And you did not see fit to divulge this information to me.”
“Oh that,” Cia hums, resting a hand on her staff, almost casually. “It never came up.”
“He claims you told him,” Volga hisses, feeling the urge to shift into his dragon form and demand answers. “Weeks ago. You saw it fit to inform him, and yet kept this information a secret from me?”
Cia has the audacity to laugh.
“It changes nothing,” she says with a wave of her hand, meeting his gaze. “I knew it would serve only as a distraction to our goals. That is why I informed him, and not you— it now consumes his thoughts, and the Sheikah leader’s as well. Their minds are filled with distractions, which makes them more susceptible to mistakes.”
She strokes a hand along the length of her staff, and her eyes flash.
“And Link is the Hero, and therefore mine. His relation to you is of no concern.”
She waves her hand in a clear dismissal, and turns back to whatever it was she was doing before.
Volga narrows his eyes, smoke trailing from his nose as he stares at her. He had not concerned himself much with Cia’s infatuation, focused only on the goals which she set before him. But now, learning his son is the object of such lust...
There is a different sort of fire in Volga’s chest now, one that he has not felt in nigh over eighteen years. Something that burns not only for himself, but for the hatchling he did not know existed until mere hours ago.
They may be enemies, but the boy is his kin.
And Cia seeks to chain him to her side, without any choice on his part.
“He is not yours,” Volga growls finally, the fire growing in his chest. “I am his kin, and therefore if he is anyone’s, he is mine. I reject your false claim on him.”
Cia’s hand tightens on her staff, and the fire in his heart stalls, a creeping fog overtaking it.
“Make no mistake, dragon,” she says in a low, cold voice. “You are only here by merit of your usefulness. And I do not tolerate meddling with what is rightfully mine.”
The fog creeps deeper, soft and inviting as it spills in. It beckons him to sink into it, but Volga resists, glaring at Cia.
“Witch,” he spits, starting the transformation into his dragon form, “you have no honor, using magic to persuade me. Curse you—”
Volga’s grip on his spear loosens, and he grunts, his transformation stopped as pain ripples up his chest and through his head. The fog follows it, dark and thick as it spills through, and the conversation and reason he had stormed in sink away into it, lost in the mists of his mind.
Cia smiles.
“Leave me, dragon. I have work to do. I will call you when I have another mission that requires your skill.”
Volga grunts again, a distant buzz of pain in his head. His anger is gone now, the fire nothing but embers whisked away by Cia’s magic, and he nods, giving the sorceress a small bow.
Then he turns and leaves the room, Cia watching him go with that same small smile.

LU characters as dumb shit I did as a child:
Legend: Laughed and make jokes (lightheartedly) at someone for being scared of potholes while riding a bike, proceeded to cycle into one, do a flip over the handlebars where they jammed in just under his ribs and lay on the ground winded for at least 4 minutes
Wild: When first learning to bake, attempted to bullshit his own recipes for cakes and stuff, accidentally gave himself food poisoning which lined up with getting the worst sickness he's ever had in memory so not a great time
Sky: Zoned out staring at the sun while counting to see how long he could do it for (my eyes are extremely light sensitive now)
Twilight: Was convinced that mermaids existed and made up stories about befriending them and a whole ass mermaid society and genuinely believed this was true (...actually this is more silly and whimsical than dumb but I'm keeping it here)
Four: Accidentally sleep walked out of a hotel room and locked himself out, woke up to be sitting on the floor of a creepy ass hotel corridor with no recollection of how he got there and started crying, nearly wasn't let back inside because who tf would answer a random knock on the door in a hotel in the middle of the night??
Warriors: Was going through a really rough time and ripped out chunks of his own hair and ate them as a coping mechanism, blaming the missing chunks on tying his ponytail too tight instead of being honest and asking for help
Time: Was genuinely convinced Pokemon existed for ages and could vividly hallucinate them on command.
Wind: Ate both lasagna and cheesecake with icecream as a meal despite being lactose intolerant
Hyrule: Thought it was fun to sprint across a room and flip onto his head on a sofa, also enjoyed standing on one arm of the sofa and falling over onto the cushions. Also liked to just... sit upside down on armchairs.
(If this sounds like someone you know irl, no it doesn't shhh please don't mention anything to me or them)

Chain as Cryptids au: Huggability
My back hurts, have some comfort! Characters are ranked by who gives the best hugs to the worst hugs, and a little bit of an explanation!
(Under the cut because long)
1. Sky
Do I really need to explain myself? He’s Sky. He’s the softest, sweetest, most cuddly hero to ever exist and we love him for that. He’s kind of known for taking a random hero into his arms, wrapping his mighty wings around them, and then flopping onto the ground and falling asleep. He’s just. So soft. His wings? So warm. Every hero- even Legend, who’s pretty touch averse- would kill to be wrapped up in his crimson feathers. (Eh, except maybe Time. At first). He has a knack for finding whichever Link needs a hug the most and seeking them out.
2. Twilight:
This guy? Is extremely gentle. He’s so incredibly strong but also so incredibly soft. His Hylian hugs are second only to Sky’s, but he also had the added bonus of being a Shapeshifter! One moment, he’s got a Link all wrapped up in his arms and the next, he’s a purring cat on their lap. A wolf wrapped protectively around them. Warm and cuddly and always so careful. Gotta love Twilight.
3. Suprisingly (?), Legend:
Legend’s pretty touch averse most of the time. But when people need him, he’s there. He has so much love in his heart that he keeps bottled up. He has experience, and he has a knack for reading people. He knows exactly what they need.
4. Wind:
Little big brother. He’s surprisingly good at comforting the others and when he wants to be, he’s biggest cuddle bug in the world (second only to Sky, I guess haha). He’s really good at curling up and holding on tight, and he definitely 100% uses his younger age to his advantage. You wouldn’t tell the child to let go, right? You wouldn’t tell the child to get up. Even though, in reality, he’s comforting them more than they’re comforting him. He lets them think that they’re being the strong ones- it’s his little trick haha.
5. Hyrule:
Little guy. His hugs are always warm and gentle since he’s absolutely buzzing with magic. Fairy magic is inherently healing, so even if he’s not actively casting spells, the others are affected by his Good Vibes when they hug him! Having a bad day? Not anymore, Hyrule won’t let it happen. (Disclaimer: when he’s in his True Form, the two inch tall fairy, it isn’t wise for the others to try to hug him. Unless they’re Four and are also two inches tall.)
6. Ravio:
TOUCH STARVED BABY!!! GIVE HIM A HUG!!! Ravio is so eager to be affectionate haha! He kind of jumps directly on top of Legend like all the time, and when be hugs people, be squeezes them tightly as if he’s making up for lost time. While this is comforting to some, it might catch others off guard. I think he should be tied with Hyrule and Four but that’s not how these things work haha.
7. Four:
Four’s hugs are good hugs! They would be higher up on the list if it weren’t for their horns getting in the way. Sky’s go-to move is to rest his chin on peoples’ heads when he cuddles, but the top of Four’s head is deadly. Because they’re shorter than almost everyone in the Chain, the horns will get in the way. It’s no problem! The others can work around them! But they are gonna knock them down a few points. Sorry, Four.
8. Time:
This man. This God. Is so incredibly bad at being social. He’s awkward and not very good at reading social cues. And that’s not because he’s not mortal, it’s because he was raised by a tree. He’s not sure when it’s appropriate to hug the other Links (he’s more confident with Malon and his children), so he just tends to leave them alone. His philosophy, in this and in everything, is that if he gives them space, they’ll eventually come to him. That’s… not always correct. His hugs have great potential- he’s big and gentle- but he can’t give good hugs if he doesn’t give hugs.
9. Wild:
Wild doesn’t really… hug. He’ll sit next to a Link and flop against them. He’ll lean. But he doesn’t quite understand to wrap his arms around, and he doesn’t respond well to someone wrapping their arms around him, feeling trapped. So the leaning is about as close as they’re gonna get haha! And that’s perfectly fine! He’s not heavy (like at all) but he is warm (absolutely buzzing with spirit magic), so he’s always a welcome snuggle buddy. Just as long as he doesn’t try to steal their things while he’s half on top of them haha!
10. Warriors:
I’m sorry, I truly am. He’s a sword. He doesn’t do hugs. And even if he did, his physical form is metallic. Cold and hard and just about the least comforting ever. I love the guy, but this just isn’t his strong suit.

I was rereading some of the posts I've saved, and noticed Wild, Twilight, and Sky at some point are all mentioned to be at Time and Malon's place. Are they all living together? Did Time just kinda pick them up as strays? And do any of the others live together as well?
Time does love to pick up strays LOL
Twilight and Wild were living in crappy motel, and once Time figured that out he brought them to the ranch. Sky lives in a cabin in the woods, but he had a really bad depressive episode and was brought to the ranch so that everyone could take care of him. He comes and goes after that, Twi and Wild are mainly the permanent residents.
Eventually, once the group figures out Hyrule's homeless, they'll drag him to the ranch too. But then Hyrule will save up to buy himself a truck and a fifth wheel, but that takes a hot minute.
Legend likely will live with Time for a little bit after Ravio's contract is up and he goes to hang out with Hilda - that way he avoids rent going up. He pays rent to Time, even though Time says it's unnecessary.
Four is definitely the one who lives on his own the most. He might pop to the ranch once in a while but he's happy where he's at.
Warriors and Wind live together in an apartment, but their landlady isn't exactly the best. Not that anyone knows that yet. Also Wars, uh, might have a bit of a drinking problem and ends up at the ranch once or twice or eighteen times. They all get it sorted eventually.

Up first! We have none other than the downfall duo!
These two were requested more than double any of the others!
We have Hyrule and Legend giving each other an epic high five! Legend finally found a ring that give him immunity to Hyrule's poison :D

Lu boys as stuff I overheard in thrift stores (mostly)
"Scientifically...a lesbian?" - A confused Time. "His robes? WACK. His Elixirs? WACK. I make wonderful elixirs, yes, you should see them." - Hyrule. *Blasting It Girl* "I-T G-I-R-L, You know I am that girl, shh-" "You ain't even a girl, bruv." - Wind, Twilight. "I was trapped. In the Rona. And Legend wouldn't help me up." - Warriors (fell in a chair, couldn't get up) "Sir yes sir! I am getting my money, and my pussy, up!" - Wild, in his best drill sergeant voice. "Let's go. Cowboy stripper." "NO. NO!!" - Wild, Twilight. "every time I go here, I leave with a new bunny. C'mon! He's got a little vest, and his nose is crooked! I LOVE HIM." - Twilight (He'd love stuffies. You can't take this headcanon away from me)
