I got a comment a few days ago (which I'm too lazy to dig up, sorry, esp since its argument is made so frequently) about how Faramir's rejection of the Ring vs Boromir's fall is basically insignificant because he(Faramir) was around it for a brief time while Boromir had to resist it for a protracted period. I've seen that point made a lot, but I'm not convinced tbh.

For one, even if you only consider in-story details, it typically ignores the increasing strength of the Ring over time as it approaches Mount Doom. Faramir didn't have to face a protracted temptation, but he did have to face a more powerful one than Boromir ever did. How the length of time vs intensity compares is pretty debatable, but it's a factor.

But the dismissal of the contrast also just seems a plain resistant reading that ignores (or denies) the treatment of the two incidents by the overall narrative. You can do that (and probably should at certain points), but I think it's important to be upfront about it. The narrative of LOTR pretty blatantly treats Boromir's and Faramir's differing responses as indicative of their underlying characters and not simply a difference in length of exposure etc.

I don't think this is an indictment of Boromir's overall character; he's definitely a heroic person in general (much as Isildur was—the Ring's warping of heroic characters is a major aspect of its function and tragedy). But to argue that Boromir's fall has nothing to do with real flaws the Ring was able to exploit or that Faramir's rejection says nothing significant seems such a rejection of the narrative treatment that I'm just—nah.

And I am a Faramir stan, so my opinion might be suspect, but I do like Boromir a lot. And his fall to the Ring and reclamation of himself after make him much more interesting to me, personally and thematically, than he would otherwise be. Denying its significance to the function of his character and what the book is saying about attitudes to war etc is just ... blah.

Also, this is more headcanon, but I think it's important that in terms of the writing process, Tolkien came up with Faramir after Boromir's fall. Boromir's account at the Council revealing that the vision/riddle came first to Faramir and more often, with the clear suggestion that Faramir was the primary intended recipient and Boromir an acceptable replacement in the long run, was very deliberate. If there's no meaningful difference in the Ring's effect on them, then the reason for the preference for Faramir and active incorporation of him into the dream account becomes a bit baffling.

But the thing is, not just considering Faramir's rejection of the Ring but his overall character, I do think he would have been more suited to the stealth and grinding strain of the Ring than Boromir.

(Yeah, there are some plot complications w/ the alternate scenario, but I think those are pretty easy to overcome and far from an "all would be DOOMED, the dream-sender must have really intended for Boromir to be the one in the Fellowship" scenario.)

Basically, they are very different people, and in the canon scenario, the Ring reveals these differences in ways that are actually important to their characterizations and the concerns of the novel.

Tell me about blowfly appearances. How can they look? Any fun mutations?

tbh I dont know much about common blowfly mutations!!! Just about identifying the regular ones (native to my area)

Some blowflies, like house flies, are a pretty dull black or brown color, but there are lots of very shiny, pretty blowflies as well! Blue and green bottle flies for example!

Aside from bright body coloration, flies can be identified by details as small as the number of bristles in a certain area on their back, or the color of their "cheeks" (the under-eye area). One if my favorite identifiers is the bright orange spiracle (breathing hole) of Phormia regina ! It's hard to see with the naked eye, but it was a very easy way to differentiate it under a microscope!

One SPOOKY fun fact about identifying blowflies is THIS: one of these species of fly is normal and its larvae eats only dead tissue. The other, closely related species is parasitic, because it has larvae that eat LIVING tissue.

The only difference between them visually is the length of the middle stripe on their back!!! ^_^ They're called Primary and Secondary Screwworms

Don't be scared, though. It is pretty hard for a well-cared-for person to accidentally have fly eggs hatch on them. Fly eggs take a while to hatch and most humans are pretty good at swatting flies away quickly.

These parasitic flies are a greater concern for big, slow-moving livestock that don't shower & change clothes every day!

late at night. i will find myself unable to read during the afternoon and then as soon as it's dark out i'm like oh hell yeah its books time. i also like reading physical books cozy and comfy in bed but alas i read so many pdfs on my computer and have to sit (not cozy or comfy)

19: most disliked popular books?

i cant fucking stand tess of the durbervilles tbh. i loathe the entire victorian english romantic pastoralism project it's riddled through with, i loathe hardy's vision of the rural poor and of englishness, and unlike a lot of books i find ideologically repugnant i also don't find it compelling or worth picking apart either.

oh, and 1984. 1984 is absolute fucking dreck. so is animal farm obviously. both of these books make it clear that if you are working class orwell had nothing but sneering contempt for you. you are not a real person to him you are an amorphous flesh mass who will do what you are told. there is literally nothing concerned with material politics and reality to be gleaned from 1984. it is an abstracted liberal vision of dystopia with nothing meaningful to say about its primary themes of surveillance and the control of information other than 'they exist, and are bad'--not to mention the fact that it's basically a novel-length anti-communist screed. nothing of value to be extracted from it except a sense of the cultural anxieties of the mid-century english imperialist.

Yep! I'm not actually sure what a domestic longhair would look like without guard hairs; both of the breeds I'm aware of that don't have guard hairs (or at least as many) are both shorthaired breeds. I'm guessing they would look similar to the Selkirk rex:

A lot of sources kinda disagree with how many coats there are to a cat, tbh. :/ It's hard to distinguish between them, and it can get a lil fussy. But most sources say two coats. There's the top coat and the undercoat.

Guard hairs, along with awn hairs, make up the topcoat of a cat. The guard hairs tend to be longer and stiffer than the rest of the coat, and are the rarest hair; for every 1000 down hairs, there are something like 20-30 guard hairs. Awn hairs are about half the length of guard hairs. In addition, kittens aren't born with guard hairs. They grow them later.

The undercoat is made up of the soft downy fur, which tends to be curlier than the topcoat. This fur is VERY soft and is meant to hold heat close to the cat's body (hence it's curly nature!). Think of it as insulation. This is also why cats without topcoats tend to have curly hair, like the Devon Rex (like Edna) and Cornish Rex. In addition to lacking a topcoat, Devon and Cornish rex also have a secondary Extra Curly Hair mutation.

Now, the Laperm and Selkirk rex listed above both have topcoats and undercoats. Their curly hair mutation just affects ALL their hair.

so, onto the Problems With Not Having a Topcoat: the topcoat is the primary protection against UV radiation, so Edna isn't allowed to go outside, or else she could get a sunburn. She also gets colder more quickly than most cats, so she's usually found monopolizing the heated beds.

Just found your blog and I absolutely agree with everything you've said regarding the treatment of Sharon in TFATWS. What hurts the most is that EVC has third billing in the show yet is getting paid dust. (So is Mackie tbh, the writers are really giving him nothing to work with.) All I wanted from this show was found family with Sam, Sharon and Bucky but it looks like we're not even getting that. So much wasted potential with Sam and Sharon paralleling Steve and Peggy in terms of the legacy theme.

The marketing and interviews for the series have sent a lot of mixed messages when it comes to Sharon, but one of the few things that encouraged me was EVC being third billed when the show premiered. i hoped that meant she played a significant, integral role after sam and bucky, but now I think it's just the consequence of her agent negotiating her a slightly better deal than the films.

and we're on the same page re: mackie, too. my primary concern is sharon's treatment because she/EVC is what brought me here (and because of all the terrible shit she went through before), but if I had the energy I'd have plenty to say about how sam (and bucky and zemo) are all being grossly underserved by the writing.

you mentioned the connection sam and sharon could have with legacy, and that's the rub: it's not even remotely hard to make that link (or many others); it practically writes itself. the narrative is contorting to avoid having these crucial capfam characters actually find some empathy and encouragement from each other? build themselves back up from where they began? what was the phrase... shared life experiences? it's alarming the lengths they go to to shoot it dead before it even leaves the ground.

at my most, most skeptical, i was confident we'd have worthwhile action scenes with sharon, even if she was doomed to being an afterthought in every other respect. now i read that skogland said she requested the EVC solo fight sequence in the shipyard because there were initially 'too many people' in nagel's makeshift lab. and she created the club scene because she wanted to see sam, bucky and zemo dancing in evening wear.

so that's why sharon owns a club? that's why she beat up those guys by herself 'atomic blonde' style? just to get her out of the way? if that doesn't sound like fanfic indulgence, i don't know what does. and like a moron i thought that fight scene was conceived to a) showcase that sharon's seen some shit b) establish her strength and skill and c) act as kolstad's de facto marvel film audition.

EVC killed the scene obviously, but it chafes with the rest of the set piece. watching it you know that sam and bucky can hear her screams. there's absolutely no way i buy that neither of them would go outside to back her up and uh, make sure she hasn't just been killed?

i've seen some say that they accelerated the interrogation because they heard her struggles and exchanged some worried looks, but i wouldn't be surprised if that was merely an acting choice and not indicated by the script. fact is that skogland doesn't give a fuck about sharon and spellman only thinks she's worthwhile after her #CoolGirl rewrite.

this show just puts sharon, sam and bucky one step forward and five steps back both in terms of their individual arcs and their collective journey. and it's all for the sake of re-establishing the same status quo that the movies ended on with barely any real gains - seemingly none at all for sharon.

i know that's a general D+ disease, but if you really want to excavate a bunch of foregone conclusions for the sake of luring subscribers, at least make it a worthwhile character study (i'm sure they think they've accomplished this). instead we're sludging through 6 messy hours of incoherence and confusion for what probably amounts to 36 total minutes of any significance (sharon still being alotted her traditional 7, naturally).

thank u so much anonymous friend for this important question which i will speculate on at length based on no real evidence except here’s petey on his birthday enjoying a nice red wine at a place with an entire wall based on the concept of Wines being stored as decor.

my thesis here is structured around three major points:

1. good wine does not actually taste that much better. i may be a fan of absolutely horrifying white wines in a little tervis tumbler due to my flaws as a person, but i think this is true. 

2. this is also true about things like graphic tees, etc., and it doesn’t stop petey from spending incredible amounts of money on those things. this is the crux of it--it’s about legibility in terms of luxury and style, it is about aesthetics. he does like some things which are not incredibly expensive--see: weird little vintage tees. so there’s wiggle room, but not so much.

3. he does know his own specific taste very well. he likes what he likes. but i think it would be a lie to say he is a Taste Maker--he has simply chosen a path others have paved for him in terms of style. he is susceptible to influence and convincing within the channels he’s chosen. he has a “media manager.” you know how it is.

so my takeaway is this: he is a person who enjoys wine like a regular person, and is absolutely faking different and unique enjoyment of fancy wine--whether he knows he is faking it or whether he is striving hard to detect the head of some $864 bottle, there is not complete confidence about it. like. i could drink a nice wine and say, “mmm, this has a pop of cherry” or whatever, and i could go home and make that shit up about my aldi brand winking owl $2.97 chardonnay too. 

however, unlike us (if you follow me and you are a multimillionaire you have to tell me :/), he has access to nice wine and the ability to drink enough of it that one day, he will not be faking it--he will be able to tell. (“it’s a learning process”--brock finishing petey’s sentence.)

i doubt he is taking money from the sneaker budget (nightlife and entertainment budget here we go), but i bet he starts getting numerous nicer wines For Company and a respectable wine rack. i don’t think it will become his primary rich people activity, and it shouldn’t. he just has to do it well enough on a basic level.

here are some rich people wine behaviors i’ve observed: 

1. getting a little bit of the wine to taste and then rejecting it--i think this is evil behavior. at best, tasting the wine is a formality. petey would not do this. he would just drink his wine and pretend it is good, as we all should

2. buying several bottles of expensive wine. who wouldn’t do this if they’re rich? this is good.

BUT. doing this and then demanding different glassware for the different wines including like, a specific shape of glass. i couldn’t bear it. if you care about wine, don’t @ me on this. i understand the underlying reasons about taste and aeration and muddying the flavors. YOU brought that on YOURSELF by ordering multiple bottles. i do think there’s a risk here. i think there’s a risk he would do this for various pretentious reasons and concern with style and aesthetics and luxury, but i also think he doesn’t really know all of the glass styles so his ability to be annoying is limited. tbh, most hockey players are rich and still drink shitty beer, so it’s not like so much of his social group is about fine dining. (that said, i have gone to Hockey Player Steakhouse Haunts and. well. you’d get your different glassware, easy.)

3. swirling the wine. okay, this one is fun. i would expect him to do it. we all should. it makes you feel fancy and superior and it does not affect anyone else.

4. asking for wine pairings with TOO MANY followup questions. you are allowed two questions, which are “what would you recommend with [ONE DISH ONLY]?” and then one followup. this is one that i would have to ding petey on. unfortunately, i feel like he has built exactly the kind of confidence which allows you to quiz servers at very nice restaurants about wine pairings.

oh, and he would never drink cheap champagne. if i were rich, i wouldn’t either.

HOW I RUN MY BLOG.

SPEED: I’m not a speedy RPer tbh. If I’m really pumped about a current thread and my partner and I are both online replying, I might shoot back and forth, but generally it takes days to weeks to put out my replies to any given thread. I have a job irl--and I 100% treat this as a hobby and don’t want to let it stress me out by writing with people who expect me to reply instantly--otherwise I would just stop.

REPLIES: I prefer mid-length to long threads (not novella level tho), especially with partners who I’m rather comfortable/familiar writing with. I tend to enjoy exploring what my character is thinking and feeling, so one-line dialogues can be fun to quickly develop a rapport between two characters for an initial meeting or a little side-thread to enjoy a ship dynamic...but for threads that I’m really going to be interested in and want to reply to most, they are the plotted ones that are multiple paragraphs. Single or two paragraphs are my regular mid-length threads.

STARTERS:  I will write a starter for anyone who I’ve plotted one out with, or by request/call without much plotting if I’m familiar enough with their muse that I know how I would want to set up a plausible meeting with them and Tinker Bell. If I’m not quite familiar with a character I might be less inclined to write a starter and rather my partner writes one for us to begin with. And I treat starters written for me with priority!!!

If somebody makes me a starter and I don’t reply to it within a few days--unless I’m not replying to anything in which case I’m low activity at the time like right now lowkey--LET ME KNOW. Writing a starter someone asked for and it being never answered is very frustrating and a way to make me quickly lose interest in RPing with someone, so I never want to do that to anyone else. (Weirdly, I care way more about ignored starters than dropped threads. Like if you drop a thread I’ll probably forget about it, but I never forget who liked my starter calls and didn’t answer the starter I gave them....)

INBOX: Always open for IC & OOC memes from my memes tag. Always open for IC & OOC questions for/about my muse! I don’t reply to everything immediately honestly. I’ll reblog some memes and not answer all of them, but then go back later when I’m feeling the inspiration again to get to them. It’s not my primary/preferred method of starting RPs, so not my first concern to answer--but if my partners want to continue them into threads, that’s also kind of what they’re for!! I answer them more as jumping off points to reply to rather than little drabbles of my characters reaction. So I’m always willing to turn them into threads, never hesitate. Assume it’s a go.

SELECTIVITY: Not super selective. I consider myself semi-selective because I’m technically open to RPing with non-mutuals--but at this point I basically follow back every blog that looks decent (not full of OOC and un-cut posts, has about/rules page that’s not just a link to a wiki page) whether I know the muse or not, so that tends to be all the ppl I’m willing to thread with anyway.

(I’m still not mutuals-exclusive because I can imagine a situation where maybe I enjoy an RPer’s style and am interested in their character and writing with them, but they regularly reblog stuff that I don’t like. I’m not bothered to thread with them even tho we’re not mutuals, bc I’m just here for the writing rather than following their inspo posts lmao)

WISHLIST: My wishlist tag is here, but instead of scrolling through it...My wishlist is honestly just finding RPers whose writing really clicks with mine so I find it easy and relaxing to reply to threads with them, instead of trying to force myself and get stressed for not being able to make it flow when this should just be for fun? There are ppl who I really want to write with, whose blogs/muses I like, and who I enjoy talking to OOC, but then when I actually get to our threads I’m like....eh, idk what to say here. And others who I want to have a hundred threads with because every time I go to reply, it just comes easily and I’m inspired.

+ Our characters have interesting dynamics and plots, potentially we ship our muses so I can squeal over them! It’s not something I can exactly just point at and say “who wants to do this specific plot with me?” It’s like, once you find a good partner, keep expanding your verse, your muses’ relationship, your plot ideas, and your friendship OOC to make this hobby really worth the time.

HONEST NOTE: I’m not the best writer. I’m not the best role-play partner. I take a long time to reply to things, and I drop threads if I’m not feeling it, but it never means I don’t WANT to write with you or that I have no interest in our threads. I just don’t want to let this become a stressful activity for me, because I can only write when I’m feeling the inspiration. I can’t just grind out replies like that, because my imagination is very picky, I guess?

And I’m very much a perfectionist in the self-sabotaging way so if I’m trying to write something and don’t feel like it’s good enough to share, I’d rather just not do it at all...(like taking a 0 instead of a higher but still failing grade bc if u didn’t try then u didn’t really fail, which is ridiculous but i’ve always been like that even in school--anyway my point is DON’T STRESS ME OUT I HAVE ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION)

My honest note is just, I’m always ready to plot and discuss and try to thread, but please don’t expect too much from me and end up disappointed bc I don’t live up to expectations as an RP partner. I’m just doing my thing here and putting in the effort I realistically can with my mental state. I want to have fun writing with all of you, just give me patience and time and enjoy what we do get to see from our characters, and I also won’t judge you for being slow with replies or dropping things.

Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes and “Genderfluid Drow”

Okay so there’s been some controversy lately over D&D Beyond’s video talking more about the drow (CN: biological essentialism in video, transphobia and exorsexism in comments) because the video talks (at the 10 minute mark) about certain elves, blessed by Corollan, who are able to ‘change their sex’, and are able to ‘decide whether they are male or female, or neither, depending on the elf’s choice’ after a long rest. I spoke about my opinion on this a little in OpenDND, the DND discord server I help run, but I thought I’d post a little of what what I think and hopefully clear up a few concerns and misconceptions that have been floating around. For the record, I am not genderfluid, but I am nonbinary, although I recognise that I cannot speak for genderfluid or for all trans people. This is purely my take on things, that I thought some folks here might be interested in. 

Putting under a read more cos it gets kinda long, but the tl;dr is: some elves can quote unquote “change their sex”, this doesn’t make them automatically genderfluid or trans because that’s based on harmful assumptions about what sex and gender are and especially what genderfluidity is, and picking individual “body features” rather than assuming body features based on sex is a much less harmful way of framing it that isn’t linked to either sex or gender.

I think when the video refers to elves choosing their sex, assuming "oh they meant gender" is...mistaken. The idea of linking that with genderfluidity promotes harmful stereotypes about gender and transness as something within ones control, and gender as an outward presentation rather than an innate thing. Especially with the long rest aspect, there is a particularly harmful stereotype about genderfluid people "choosing what gender they're going to be when they wake up", which is not how it works because again a) gender isn't a choice and b) my understanding from talking with genderfluid people is that their innate sense of gender can change over the course of the day, or can remain static for a few days, and so on, and so linking it with “waking up” is reductive. 

In terms of implementing this really exciting development as a DM or a player in a less potentially harmful way, you can adapt D&D Beyond/ Mordenkainen’s “sex” terminology without necessarily making it biologically essentialist (although the video itself does kinda make this mistake, I'm just reinterpreting it). Obviously there is no such thing as a "male" body or "female" body because sex is as much of a social construct as gender is, and even within, say, the conventional "cis non-intersex male body" bracket there are variations in body type and build. Reinterpreting it as "they can choose (within reason) their body features after a long rest" kinda negates the "sex" muckiness. I’d argue that changing things like height or weight or hair length/style wouldn’t be "within reason", but if you're gonna focus on elf mutability, reinterpreting it as body features enables a varied change of features such as facial features, shoulder/waist ratio, even primary and secondary sexual characteristics if you want, without linking those features to the concept of “sex”, or picking between a quote unquote “male body”, “female body” or “androgynous body” (bleh) upon waking from a trance. 

So while this blessing from Corellon doesn’t automatically make an elf trans, it’s also worth considering (and getting excited about!) the possibilities for trans characters: for example, how having this blessing would affect that elf’s (and elf society’s tbh) understanding of sex and gender; or the idea of a trans elf who is on a quest to become worthy of such a blessing from Corellon through adventuring so they can gain the power to have the body that would feel right for them; and indeed a genderfluid elf who is fortunate enough to be able to change their body features to match how they feel internally after waking up from a trance.

If you are a cis (non-trans) DM or player who is interested in incorporating this aspect in your campaign, or incorporating trans characters, I’d recommend talking to trans people (my inbox is always open) about your ideas to check they are appropriate and respectful. There are also a number of articles out there written by trans people about writing trans people well, and I recommend this one, as well as the ‘Writing Trans’ series.

ok so!!! i’m guessing ur primary concern is the head, which honestly is the hardest part tbh. once you get the head down, the rest of the body can be bullshitted pretty easily, but it’s that first clause that’s the killer, so we’ll start there.

now to be perfectly honest, i very very heavily use screenshots for help. ur life will be much easier if u just allow urself to use screenshots. and tbh?? tracing can really help u learn anatomy and proportions. obv i’m not saying to trace every detail, but sometimes doing a rough trace over a screenshot to lay out where the plates go goes a long way.

now that that’s out of the way, let’s get started. i’ve got a picture of my darling aediteia that i’m working on, and teia is a very dainty crestless, so i’ve been using nyreen as a reference, because nyreen is a very thin and petite lady turian (i have a rant abt in-game crestless turians, but that’s another post). get all ur refs open; if at all possible, find refs with the specific head angle ur looking for. it doesn’t have to be tilted quite right, that’s what transform tools are for, but if ur doing a 3/4 view, find a 3/4 view of a turian.

i always start with getting down how i want the head to be positioned, cause then it’s easier to figure out where everything needs to go:

this is still a rough sketch, so it doesn’t have to be perfectly the way the finished piece will turn out. next, do some rough, basic geometric shapes where the plates will go. this is one case where tracing is ur friend if ur not confident in ur own ability to eyeball placement; sketch out the shapes on the screenshot, then copy/paste them onto ur new file and adjust accordingly:

again, doesn’t have to be perfect. some of those are pretty off, actually. this is just meant to help sort out where everything will go, and can be fixed later on. also notice i turned off the cowl sketch. that’s just cause plates are really complicated, and it’s a lot easier to figure them out when you have less cluttering up the canvas.

once those are laid out, you can start doing the actual plates. plate shape varies widely for turians, so don’t feel pressured to get it exactly as it looks in the refs. if you’re drawing an oc, i actually strongly encourage you to experiment with plate shape. see what looks nice!

see all those extra detailing lines? those are important. they add depth and definition to the plates, make them look more real. you don’t have to go overboard; just basic lines to show a ridge or an edge will do. your refs are your friends!

okay, now let’s say you want to move on to full-body posing, or even just above-the-waist. easy enough! turians have fairly human-esque proportions when it comes to length of body parts, so you can use human pose refs and just adjust accordingly. for example, here’s the posing from this sparatus drawing i did a while back, with the body sketch overlaid:

simple, right? i didn’t even include the cowl in the pose sketch. the legs are the trickiest part, and honestly? those you can just sorta bs your way to victory. use your refs, and remember, turian legs are digitigrade. when they stand flat, only their toes and the balls of their feet touch the ground. they have very long feet, and slightly shorter shins. like dogs or horses, or, yknow, birds.

here’s some examples, if you want a look:

note: i do not recommend using me:a models for leg reference. digitigrade models (turians and salarians most noticeably, but krogan suffer as well) were forced into unsuitable rigging, giving them all permanently half-crouched stances. this is not how these species would stand naturally. use original trilogy models for reference wherever possible.

moving on. you can make your turians as bulky or as skinny as you like; turians canonically don’t have any builds considered more “feminine” or “masculine” than the other, and such labels are assigned to them by human standards. their only sexual dimorphism is the presence or lack of a crest. you can have the daintiest of the dainty, like aediteia:

turians, like all species, have a wide spectrum of builds! go wild!

now, of course, there’s the part i’ve been not-so-subtly avoiding: the cowl.

it’s very, very tempting to make the cowl small, possibly even leave it off altogether. don’t do that. the cowl makes up a large portion of the turian body mass, and is a distinctive part of their silhouette. leaving it off makes the silhouette difficult to distinguish as a turian; without their cowls, turians look like plated sangheili from halo, and you don’t want that. (don’t get me wrong, the sangheili are my fave alien species in halo, but if you’re drawing a turian, you want it to look like a turian, right?)

this is actually a trick eli @99bottlesofhorosk​ taught me: draw half an egg where the cowl looks like it should go:

you don’t have to get it exactly right. hell, you probably won’t. that’s okay! i always do the cowl on a separate layer from everything else, so if i figure out it’s not matching up, i can just rescale and/or transform it until it looks right. (in case you hadn’t guessed yet, the name of the game is “bs accordingly.”)

a good ballpark estimate: the back of the cowl should come up to about halfway up the turian’s skull, give or take a bit depending on their build. also, crestless turians tend to have steeper slopes to their cowls (45 degrees or so), and have more of a point in the back, while cresteds tend to have shallower slopes (30 degrees), and are more rounded in back.

i feel like i’m forgetting some things, but this is already very long and very image-heavy, and i think i’ve at least covered the most important parts, so i’m going to wrap it up here. this is probably less informative than you were hoping, i’m kind of stupid, lol.....

Combat System Related

“The combat system is tremendously complicated to configure and use. You have to make templates to guide the new players or they will not attract you. In my case I have decided not to use it, it requires too much time and there are faster options that favor roleplay “

The template suggestion is a good idea.  This is one of the easier to learn systems we’ve used over the years though, if anyone has any trouble configuring it feel free to poke any online staff board or ask in the Discord, we’re here to help!

However before we attacked someone or another group we extensively rped out the scenario these days its all DICE MATH DICE MATH i am horrible at math i come to SL to relax and just play out my character with the occasional battle here and there. Now i am aware thats all the current generation of SWRP but the freedom is very limited i'd prefer old school honor FFC above meter and dice but i realize there is a huge trust issue in the community which i gotta admit is somewhat logical considering the amounts of people that god-modded in the past especially the Sith and Jedi who all were SUPAH powerfull. Hell i'm a sith too but i hide it and play like Palpatine nobody knows i'm sith unless they are sufficiently alligned with the force to sense the intense dark energy hidden. 

 Eh long story short. Focus more on ROLEPLAY and less on DICE or any other system.

 In the end we all come to SL to escape the hectics of life adding complicated systems like CLOCKS [Large Events only as far as i heard ] does make me want to just walk away. Turfs work pretty neat but requires more consistent rules like Take 1 turf a week to prevent Big groups such as my [REDACTED] to Streamwall it all I can go on for hours but wont bother you guys ;) I love the casual rp on the sim that's what drew me in “

We’re looking at things like Clocks & Turf for revision or termination.  Those behind it are no longer with us, and we do feel it’s current version is too heavy.  The add ons such as that are not mandatory for players to know, they’re more for group leads and often something they can opt out of as well under certain circumstances.

“ Leveling/Rank system is kinda meh'. While I do like a system that has leveling/rank to it keeps people honest and cuts down on meta/god emoting and shit. I feel like the gaps between some of the higher ranks and lower ranks seem like kinda insane. Which might be intended if so then I suppose it's fine but I feel like Emi basically can't interact with certain people in a hostile manner once she learns their abilities cause you she would have be insane to try it again lol. “

The gaps are actually much less significant than they have been in the prior systems we’ve used such as SWT & Chimera but will look further into that.  I’ve personally lost to a 1 on a 5, so it’s not invincible mode by any means.

Build/Setting Related

“i feel it might be nice to see more places for people to sit and hang out around coronet, maybe replace some of the derelict vehicles or make it so you can sit on them like benches. id like to see more items handed out as mission rewards even if rarely. “

Been working on this, adding in more benches, small parks, etc.  As well as getting more staff the ability to generate items that can be given as rewards. If anyone is running a storyline that they want to request items for ask in the Discord or ask me directly, if I’m busy I can at least point you to someone who can help

I agree! I assume this one is more about staff than the playerbase as we’ve been pretty happy with the low number of OOC player vs player incidents.

Since the survey have added enough rentals to catch up on the waiting list.  While the waiting list is now empty they are all full last I checked so will add more.  The waiting list is why the boxes often auto-lock and do not notify.  When we do have freed up rentals and no list I let people know in Discord announcements. If you want to get on said list let Zenless know, specify which of the rental types/location.  Generally go down the list when one becomes free but if I don’t hear back from someone in 48 hours move on to the next person.

Would have liked elaboration as to why, I personally enjoy the contrasts in setting.

We do have a build box, but yeah need to be in the landgroup to rez, this is to protect the sim from griefers.

Worked on it with the addition of the RP scenes, currently there are 4, we may switch them up now and then, any player can use these for their adventures. As of writing this we have a snowy one, a shadowy planet, a jungle and a minimalist desert.  It often depends how many prims we have free how details these are.  Things are also added to them specifically for a story, etc.

Story Related

Lot of similar themes in these 6 so I’ll touch on them at once. Our group leads have been great and have been the primary ones responsible for the high levels of activity.  On the other hand since the start we had a story team that did not put much time and effort in other than those who were also group leads.  There was a main story arch yet few if any segments were ever run, and when these people left they asked for their stories not to be used so we had to go back to the drawing board. We’re working very hard to get more people involved in stories/running stories, do let me know if you are interested as we’re always looking for more aid.  Typically we bring on people as mentors first, find out what they do well and help with stories if desired.

Staff/Management/Leadership Related

As some may have noticed there has been an overhaul of staff, much of this will seek to address any of the comments here. Everyone knows I say what I think to a fault.  So I’ll be transparent in my POV (take as you will) though I’m sure some are going to be unhappy I even touched on this.   The SWL Community was in bad shape after what happened on 4D for those who were here for that, I made a bad judgement call in some of the people I partnered with as our views were incompatible. I was very depressed after 4D (our prior region), and didn’t input as much as I should have when it came to staffing the sim, so they filled the staff with those who I’d consider their “friends”. Staff often became a battlefield of ideology between myself and what I saw as a circle of friends.  In no way am I ever a perfect angel, and there are patches that I could have navigated better so I am responsible for the conflicts within staff as much as the departed are.  Sometimes people just don’t work well together.  What’s done is done though and moving forward I feel we’ve been making a lot of progress in having a more cohesive team.  Still some rough patches as any sim with a decent sized playerbase is going to have it’s share of arguments, but I can say for certainty that everyone involved in leadership now genuinely cares about the community and that we’ll do our best to listen to the players and strive for consistent improvement.

I know it’s repetitive but the person who did this is among those who departed.  Fixed this personally as being consistent is of extreme importance to us.

We are currently interested in taking on another mentor or two as there is a lot of work to be done, but we’re being careful in that we want a staff that can get a long to avoid a lot of the feedback that was brought up here on staff environment being internally hostile.  

MISC

“ Clear advertisement of those willing to mesh-build or animate on commission for players would be nice! Even if we don't take them up on it, knowing it is available helps. “

I like this suggestion, will think of ways to try to advertise for them.

“ - More sim events for common people 

- More story events at current scale before we try and move large scale. We really haven't even tested the waters here and yet we're trying to move larger? It's like an amusement park with one slide saying we need to buy more land rather than build more attractions in the available space to entertain people. Lets try and utilize the current setting to its fullest before we decide it needs to go larger - The main social hub moved to a neutral ownership.

 - More balanced meter 

- Less outrageous things being brought onto sim. The more outrageous things get, the harder it is to bring content because that content gets dismissed by one person with the snap of a finger rather than being a tension and toil to overcome It also puts newer players at a huge social disadvantage. “

This one touched on a lot of things so put it in misc.  Pretty much touched on everything but “outrageous” in other sections.  What people consider outrageous is very subjective but we do try to avoid anything too crazy.

True.  If any issues with an avatar or anything else, a GM or Admin should be contacted.  Players hostilely confronting other players is often something that will be considered a minor offense which can lead to disciplinary scenarios.  If you need any help do let one of us know, it makes me very sad when I hear about someone being given a hard time over something like that.

In conclusion, thank you to everyone who filled out the survey.  This was the hardest section to give feedback on as it does touch on a lot of “drama” elements.  I’m not the smartest admin, def not the most PR or PC, I speak from the heart.  It means a lot to me that after six years and all the obstacles that people are still here. I’ll do my best to try to improve everyone's experience.  Please keep in mind we are a VERY diverse role-play community and it’s literally impossible to fully please everyone, sometimes the good of the many will outweigh the good of the few but the tyranny of the majority is also something you always try to keep at bay.   

SWRP as a whole has now lasted about fifteen years as you can trace it’s origins back to 2003 while the first groups and sims really got going in 2004 with groups like the Mandalorians under Dazzo Street,  Jedi under Marcus Moreau and others,the first Galactic Empire.  Then in 2005 sims exploded with Korriban, Sirius, New Holstice, Tatooine, the founding of GAR & DLOTS.   We may have had to do a lot of adapting and changing with the times to still be an active community, but fifteen years is an amazing accomplishment for any roleplay community.   We’ll have our ups and downs but I think we’ve proven ourselves to be as resilient as they come.  :)

I'm very excited for a series of solo episodes!

Don't know how I feel about the new Grand Magnificent tbh… This concept feels more conventional than the original one, and I'm worried the aspects of his character I found interesting won't be in focus anymore.

I had my problems with the previous system and how it flattened down emotions into inaccurate categories, but so far I'm not excited about the switch… Blades in the Dark's mechanics were kinda hard for me to follow by ear, and being unable to keep track of the gameplay by myself is unpleasant; and the new classes sound really dull compared to the ones in The Veil. 

Iota's speech is strange… It sounds more like a simple copy-paste of real-life colonialism than the invasion described previously in the story. “They will ask you to give them a name like ours, they will ask to touch your bone” etc sounds nothing like Independence and its followers' modus operandi was, and, judging by the future tense, hasn't actually happened with the present time settlers yet – so where did that come from, in-universe? In fact, shouldn't her people have a relatively positive outlook on non-hostile outsiders, since they brought on the planet's golden age? Hopefully the following episodes will elaborate on this, because I've made peace with needing lore or plot points explained to me several times, but I need more clarity on big ideological question like this. 

Gig is such a Chaotic Good!!

Buying sex is legal, normal & common in the utopia and Signet is a regular customer?! Fucking seriously?! I couldn't even focus on the episode for the next half hour and eventually turned it off because my thoughts kept returning to this and I kept seething with anger. Way to ruin the episode after I was so moved and intrigued by the intro…

They've been pretty careful with past spoilers this season, here's I think the first example: talking at length about the Hitchcocks, plural. Sure, it was only an episode three spoiler, but it was such a good reveal! 

So, who actually printed out the ancient Quire people? Was it a political move from one of the sides? 

No Austin you definitely have not mentioned Earth building a giant Dyson spehere around themselves!!! What the fuck :D

Everyone got a nice inconsequential vignette and Fourteen's scene had actual high stakes…

It's always cute when the first words after the intro are in that specific tone of voice that makes it obvious that at least 5-10 minutes before were spent in a lively conversation about some nonsense that finally was put to an end no more than two seconds ago (and then they talk about nonsense for ten more minutes lol) 

I love this show's dedication to describing everyone's outfits in extreme detail at every opportunity 

50k+ years later it's Art and Jack's turn to be the half of the party who walks right through the door and charm their way in lol. I hope they don't get shot or buy a bunch of torch units or something

I really like “finding a way to help a teenage community fit in the world” and “reconnecting a family and acquiring infrastructure for travel between planets” as the first projects; it really does convince you that these people have set out to make the world a better place (even if a lot of the time is actually spent pulling heists or fighting mechanical tigers).

Okay, the scavenger faction leader is literally a vulture, I get it.

What I don't get is why we are supposed to dislike that faction. There was some general “eh, they suck” said OOC during setup but we haven't actually seen them do anything bad! Show, don't tell! They need to, like, raid Big Garage and try to steal Gumption's arm if you want me to see them as an enemy.

Remember that nonsense I wrote about T. Rex in my C/w notes post? I can't believe they're doing basically the same joke on the actual show!

But how about… not capture or kill… but befriend the Axiom and/or release it into the wild… I know, I know, they can't travel far enough to move it to a safe distance from humans. But it just offends me on principle that after all that talk of diversity etc, when the characters actually meet a truly alien, unique species, they only consider the options of killing or capturing and exploiting them, and nobody even tries to ask “hey, shouldn't these creatures have rights, even if we are forced to disregard them in self-defence for the moment?” You know who I need to appear on screen ASAP? Bounty. Ask it everything! Does it remember being an Axiom? What did it feel like? What does it think about its transformation and new role? 

I thought Grand's special gun was just Even's gun?

Did Janine just call Belgard Signet's “robot wife”? Hell yeah

Me for an hour straight, not having read the description: Blease Do Not Kill My Alien Child I guess that's at least postponed now though… The situation did immediately get mildly creepy again, which makes me concerned. Is this just a different reason to kill a different Axiom – to Free Innocents from a Lotus Eater Machine? I'm getting serious September flashbacks. Honestly, between this, the other team's arc which felt like a crossover about the Chime in Marielda, and everyone getting a personal mech, this half of the season is starting to feel like Counter/weight 2, which is sad because at the beginning the atmosphere was much more original. Also I miss Primary and Satellite's correspondence, it was such a good framing device and a touching relationship at the same time!

Polyphony's powers and way of thinking are more similar to Quire than anything else

I feel very relieved and vindicated by the direction this story took!

Hell yeah finally more about the Waking Cadent!! I've been waiting for that for how many episodes now? Now that we've seen her in person I hate her actually Amend that, I hate both Cadents. A plague on both their houses!

Am I glad to hear from the Rapid Evening again! Bold of Austin to assume we could forget who Primary and Satellite were Okay, I first had this question a ton of episodes ago, but now it is relevant again: does Grey know the contents of the previous Satellite's final message? She knows about its existence because the numbers match up (yeah I went back and checked), but does she know that Crystal Palace either made a colossal miscalculation about Independence's route or lied on purpose for some reason?

Wait, characters still have beliefs? I don't remember this coming up since the game change

I completely forgot about Tender's cyborg legs and also misheard “I have a fake leg” as “thick leg” and was like “Uh good for you but how's that gonna help?!”

Once again, Team Exploration goes ahead and leaves Team Heist without resources lol. What do you mean they're using our ship for an orbital drop? What do you mean they've taken all axiom scanners? :D Seriously though, it's a shame that the sessions were played in this order because in-universe I see no reason why they wouldn't say “Hey before you go after Acre Seven, let's fly over Terncage and do a scan real quick” (the range on the scanners is far enough for that, right?)

I don't get how Ache works. For Quire, it made what it wishes it could be, but for everyone else it just made evil clones vaguely themed after their regrets?

Gods in this world are all ascended mortals but are just a fact of life, nothing to dispute since interaction with them is pretty frequent. I’m unsure of how this world approaches Creation and evolution atm. Despite growing up in a religious setting though, Ausra serves no god/deses personally and is embittered by them.

12. Describe 5 unusual characteristics your muse has.- Always wears her hair in a tight ponytail to keep her hair out of her face but ponytails give her a headache and headaches make her cranky. She’s always cranky. This might be connected.- Her cooking has healing abilities.- Has very good luck.-  The most important thing you need to know about her? Accent: Valley girl.

14. Are they a team player or do they prefer to be solo?Will do anything to ensure the people around her survive to her own detriment (which is often to their detriment as well) but she is difficult to work with in a team and is prone to making things more difficult for everyone by complaining.

25. Do they have any weird bedroom habits? Any unusual kinks?Tbh, my OCs are like my kids so I haven't really thought about it deeply. Just taking a quick think on it… Ausra has a tendency to doctor people and not in sexy way.  I can see that following her into the bedroom. Shirts come off and she feels a lump and she’s like “Gotta get that checked out.”  Might be into hair-pulling? idk

26. How does your character prepare for bed? Do they sleep at all or can they stay awake for days on end without trouble?She has a whole bedtime routine with tea and scented lotions. She sleeps easily and quickly - helped by her aforementioned bedtime routine. She doesn’t want to let her own exhaustion cause anyone else’s death so she ensures she gets enough sleep.

28. Are they afraid of death? Do they have any regrets?Despite having a bit of a death wish and feels guilty for surviving through several events for which she was the only survivor for, she desperately wants to live.  She regrets surviving at the expense of others though.

29. Does your character get restless when things are too quiet or do they favour solitude and silence? Why?She says she hates when things are hectic but she tends to wallow if she’s left in solitude and silence too long, stewing in her own guilt.

Describe 5 unusual characteristics your muse has.- Middle child of 13- 28-ish and has never left her family farm until now- When I say family farm, that includes extended family - her farm has 200+ people and all of them are related to her or married in or want to- Befriended the Giants living behind her family farm eventually- Family loves and supports her and she gets care packages on the road

26. How does your character prepare for bed? Do they sleep at all or can they stay awake for days on end without trouble?Gotta get into her jammies and drink a glass of warm milk every night. She’s used to a happier and cushier life than the others but she’s always used to not getting a lot of sleep and doesn’t lose steam easy.

28. Are they afraid of death? Do they have any regrets?Doesn’t really think about death much - probably doesn’t realize she can die. No regerts!
