Erin I have a question ⁉️
How did you start writing LoF? Like,.not writing it in general, I mean like how did you get—or learned—or studied—all the information regarding the Batfam and their backgrounds, and also about Peter and the Avengers, etc.
Currently, I'm honestly planning on writing a small fiction about Peter ending up in Gotham (You must know your words hold a very dangerous power to inspire) but unfortunately, I don't have the right information to actually START writing it TT_TT. Do you have any tips on how I can start?
(P.S Apologies if this sounds a little confusing, I am not entirely the best at explaining 😞🤞)
There's one person to blame for getting me into DC, and it's @alighterwood
I've always been a fan of Spider-Man. He was my first hero, I wanted to be him soooo bad. I had gotten around to sort of writing my own fic for it with my own version of Peter around last year? (Very much inspired by ITSV, LoF Peter came about because he's his own universe and is based on Spider-Man lore from multiple media versions). I had never thought about writing a Spider-Man fic until ATSV, but at the time I was pretty much dead set on rewriting VLD. I got inspired after rewatching ITSV and then watching ATSV.
But it wasn't until alighterwood got me reading their favorite Batfam fics (specifically Tim) that I started to enjoy Batfam or DC in general.
(My favorite Batfam fic is "The Lone Ranger Never Had to Deal with Bruce Wayne" )
From there I started branching out into learning more about Batfam, what is and isn't fanon, and forming my own opinions. It was a natural progression into "I want my favorite characters to meet each other" and alighterwood's evil genius plan ended up working.
I've read a few comics (mostly the Red Robin series, because Tim was my intro to Batfam so I figured I'd start there) but most of my information?
Wikis, reddits, forums from years (a few of them from decades) ago, my father (who was a Batman fan as a kid) and his friends (my uncles, who were all DC and Marvel nerds), my own friends- basically anything I can get my hands on. If I had a question, it was (probably) answered somewhere, or there was someone else with the same question that made me feel better for not getting it. The internet has a BOATLOAD of information about both Marvel and DC.
It's a LOT of research and note taking, to be honest. I have a physical notebook where I take notes on lore so I don't forget it. I comb through fanon AND canon and I decide from there what I want and what I don't want/what doesn't work and what does work for what I'm writing.
But here's something to keep in mind: at the end of the day, you're not writing FOR anyone else. You're not out to please people who are 100% canon, all the time, nor are you trying to accommodate people who only read fanon material. You're writing for YOU. This part is fun for me, but could be very tedious for other people. I'm a little weird like that (I started writing essays for fun since I learned about them in school).
I like doing research. Like a lot of writers, I go down multiple rabbit holes a day. I start by googling a simple question that should take five minutes and then I see something and go "oh! What's this!?" and pick it up, and the cycle continues when I see something else and eventually remember that I was writing.
I enjoy the research and figuring out the balance. Because DC and Marvel do the same shit with their own works! Shit gets retconned, or they bring characters back from the dead, blah blah blah. The fun part for me IS going insane trying to figure out the Flash Family and their STUPID family tree, or learning about characters that were basically forgotten by everyone- even the writers. The best part is that since it's my fic I'm writing, I can go: "What's the most entertaining way I can use this?" And no one can stop me.
But if YOU don't enjoy that part, and you try to do it, you might lose your spark!! Your inspiration!! You might not have fun, and that's what writing is all about!! My thing is, is that basically every fan interpretation, whether they try to stick to the original source as closely as they can or not, IS FANON. And fanon is fun!!
Basically it all stems down to: it's your sandbox and you can play in there however you want to. And sometimes, people see what you're doing and they're like "Can I play too?" and you're like "Yes that'd be awesome!!"
If you find that you do enjoy the research, I think it's well worth it. It's very satisfying to put together all that work and then get a comment from someone where they say "OMG!! I know that reference!" or "I love this interpretation of this very obscure thing!!"
My advice for writing a Peter in Gotham fic is to know where YOU are starting at, before you start writing your fic. If you're a Spider-Man fan and you don't know much about the Batfam, try reading a comic about them, or find some favorite fics and base your information on that. It works vice-versa, if you know more about Batfam and not a lot about Peter.
Imagine there are two people sitting in front of you. One is a Marvel fan, the other is a DC fan, and they know NOTHING about the other comics. But they both want to hear your story where you have combined them. It's important that you don't lean too much into either side: you keep both of their interest by appreciating the details from both DC and Marvel.
The Marvel fan will be happy to see Peter reacting to a new world and situations, even if they don't know everything you're referencing. But the DC fan will be excited because you care about the place that Peter is interacting with enough to make a joke that maybe only they would get.
So: have fun, explore everywhere you want to, and get a little crazy. Don't worry too much about not knowing everything there is to know. I don't know everything about DC or Marvel either!

Due to what little on-screen interactions we see between Noir Peter (Pete) and Peni in ITSV, it's no surprise that a lot of people have agreed upon the popular fanon of them being a sort of father-daughter duo (or, for those who subscribe a bit more to Pete being younger due to the comics, a sibling-like relationship). It's cute so I support it, but it got me thinking about the two in comparison to eachother, specifically in terms of corrupt systems and how they're handled in their stories. I think the two have a bit more a contrast than just the surface level stuff, so let's look into it!
(Essay + comic panel evidence beneath the cut)
From the very start of Peni's (unfortunately short) comics, she's shown as very resigned to her fate - when brought in to discuss her father and her future "career" in the SP//DR program, she's upfront and blunt; My father is dead, and I'm the only one who can replace him, so I will. It's a foregone conclusion, and one she doesn't shy away from.

Furthermore, even though we see how, throughout the comics, she's basically given no life beyond her work, and even her school hours are eaten into, she's told again and again that all of this cost means something.
She has to sacrifice everything, because there's no other choice. Her own Guardians, her Uncle Ben and Aunt May, work for the very organization that her father did, and persist to remind her of the importance of the job, even if they do try to remind her that she can't handle this alone. Very telling, when faced with threats to the multiverse, she briefly asks her Uncle Ben if she should stay with him, only for him to tell her to go.

Duty calls.
This isn't the point of this, but of course she joined Spider HQ and went along with what Miguel was telling her - she's grown up surrounded by very like-minded, sacrifice-willing adults. Of course she has to do this. What other option is there?
On the other end, Pete is quite the opposite of Peni's story. Yes, 100%, like all Spiderpeople, there's the element of responsibility, that looming recognition that not doing what you can gets people hurt, but while Peni's story is set up so that she's fighting for her system of authority, Pete is unsurprisingly against his. At any point that he can, even pre-spiderbite, he's picking fights and trying to fix things. He's so set in his beliefs and outspoken that he makes his own mentor question his actions, constantly in pursuit of a better world.
It's the responsibility of the people to give a shit, and Pete cares so much that it drives him a bit mad, I think.

Where Peni is told that this is the way things work, Pete is demanding that it change, asking questions. Peni was raised to accept her responsibility, whereas Pete was raised to fight against the expected status quo.
AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THEIR RESPECTIVE BENS.
I'll try keeping this fragment of a thought short because we're already clocking in 6 paragraphs pre-edits and I need to feed the dogs their dinner soon, but the TLDR is that Uncle Ben is the last surviving legal Guardian of Peni, and though distant, he tries his best to support her while she's in the SP//DR program. Pete's Uncle Ben is, by no such surprise, dead, but specifically, he was a WWI veteran, decorated but guilty.

Uncle Ben is, in the Noir comics, yet another symbol of how doing what you're told can haunt you. He was very vocally against the war machine he was a part of, while Peni's Ben has known nothing else but his work.
This is how completely dead opposite they are in so many regards. They contrast eachother!! It's really interesting! Honestly, I could see Pete getting into an argument with Peni's Ben over how she's been treated, even if it probably wouldn't go well. He cares too much to keep his mouth shut, often.
#noir posting#do I. tag both of these guys. what's the audience here.#uh.#spiderman noir#spidernoir#peni parker#shippers of these two DNI but I hope that would be. obvious#spiderverse#itsv#atsv spoilers#apologies for the crunchy as hell screenshots - fighting ad-hell and doing this on my phone#I usually just see people put them together as a fun father/daughter duo without any conflict. which is fine!!#but by comic standards I think Pete would probably pick a fight with the very concept of the SP//DR program#he would have some Words about it#blogcat: writing

A giant do-over of Mistakes were Made with GhostFlower and TimeBomb
Janna sends TimeBomb to Miles's Apartment to when Gwen visited
Timebomb try to right the wrongs of Mistakes were Made during the story
This saga was changed several times in planning. This is the original idea. I rewrote the first chapter 3 times before I lost motivation. I’ve basically moved on from both ships, but the idea is still here. The bold were questions I had no clue how to answer when I originally planned the fic.
PJO x MCU or DC
Both would have same divergence point. Basically, right after BOO, Zeus, Hera, and Ares decide to punish Percy and Annabeth by sending them to a different universe than their own, and they would have to face challenges to be able to leave.
MCU:
Basically, they have to survive the Battle of New York, Sokovia, Wakanda, and the Final Battle of Endgame. Could be consecutive or they could be stuck for twelve years in this world but twelve seconds in the “real” world.
DC:
I want to do this one more than the other one, but I am more lost here. The original idea was to drop them right into the clutches of the Scarecrow and Joker. The first arc would end with the deaths of both villains. I didn’t like it because the two were likely to die before either villain could be killed. I also thought even if the villains did end up dead, it would set them up more as antiheroes than heroes. Given their trauma, it would be deserved, but it also kinda goes against the essence of both characters. The second and current idea is having them body swap with Tim and Steph, since they look similar. I don’t have a plot line for either universe, but it’s the current idea in place for the future fic.
Jinx kills whole dinner party
This would dissolve into a war between Zaun and Piltover. I kinda just came up with this without an endgame in mind
Vander gave letter to Silco
Zaundads trying to fix Zaun. Need I say more?
Ekko came back before everything with Vander
Timebomb Found Family
What If… with different stories
Just something to do when I get inspiration
PJO something
Dunno what I would do
Arcane/Hogwarts
Not very thought out
Silco adopted Powder and Vi, not Vander
This would be at the bridge. Didn’t know where to go from there.
Vi led the Firelights
She would step down at some point and Ekko and Jinx would co-lead. That’s all I remember
PJO something
I genuinely don’t know what I want for this, I just know I want to make it
I lost motivation for most of these and don’t know what to do with the rest. If you have any ideas, tell me. If you want to use any of my fic ideas, also tell me and credit me. Ao3 username is the same as this one.

Circle Sewn With Fate/Unlock Thy Hidden Gate ~ Ep 2
(Part of this AU)
I can't lie, this was like my least favourite to do, but I persevered, so enjoy :)
~~~
Okay, so obviously this episode opens on the aftermath of the Rio and Agatha fight at the end of ep 1.
And Thalia's going around trying to clean up a little bit (to make sure Señor Scratchy and Kojo don't get any splinters in their paws), while trying to talk Agatha down from leaving, since that's just gonna complicate things even more.
Then while her and Teen are talking, (sensing the inevitable/Agatha not listening to her, and going off of her own quest for whatever she has planned to not get herself killed by the Salem 7), Thalia's just going around throwing some stuff into her satchel, then slips her Doc's on, and putting on Kojo's leash
She catches the last bit of the sigil, but doesn't really question it, (cause it's definitely one of the least weird things to ever happen to her), and catches the scissors with her powers, before they pierce Teen's boot, then clasps the bangles around her wrist, cuts Teen's rope restraints, and follows after him and Agatha.
^ These bad boys ^
Thalia's pretty quiet in the car, mainly just trying to see if her mom has a game-plan (which she knows she doesn't, but a girl can hope).
When they get to Lilia's shop, it's very much another like Spider-sense thingy (you know like in ITSV/ATSV, were multiple spider-people are in the same room); like "I can sense stuff about you, and you can sense stuff about me, but we've never met before."
Again, she's very much just there, quietly observing the conversation, but ready to jump in at any point, if needed.
Pretty much the same with meeting Jen + Alice, honestly; trying to adjust to her mom being lucid again, while trying not to get too attached to any of them, since she knows what Agatha's leading them into (a myth/con/cult, as Alice put it).
Not really much else going on, until they get back to the house, and Thalia's just sat there, on the couch, eating pretzels, while Teen's decorating/the three of them + Kojo are waiting for the coven to get there, so they can get started.
Then follows Agatha to go recruit Mrs Hart/Sharon, as like a 'good cop - bad cop' type thing (get it, cause Agatha's like fantasy thing was her being a detective/cop).
Fast forward to them being in the basement, Thalia's stood between Agatha and Alice, with Kojo's leash firmly looped around her wrist.
In terms of the Ballad (forgive me, I don't know the proper words for it), Thalia's very much a 'low' singer, kind of matching with Agatha (since that's who she learnt it from), and lowkey Lilia, too.
When the song's over, and Agatha starts going off, Thalia gets a little bit scared, honestly, since she (thinks she) knows what's coming next, and has grown quite fond of all of them.
Then the door actually appears, and she's shocked the same as Agatha, because like "What the fuck?! That's never happened before".
Thalia follows behind Mrs Hart, and instead of being nervous about what the road actually is, she's kind of like an excitable child (again, finding comfort(??) in things that are frightening to others), and walking ahead of the others with Kojo firmly by her side, looking around at the entire landscape of it.
She then doubles back, and take her shoes off like the rest of the coven (I was gonna have her not do this, since as a neurodivergent person myself, I personally wouldn't, but we're just gonna pretend that she has socks on), and walks the road to the right of Agatha.
~~~
Bonus: Thalia's outfit for the Witches' Road

^Ignore bag + add leggings (also the spider-pin defo isn't a nod to Rio's in Ep 4) ^
~~~
Took a while, lmao, but I'm lowkey bed-bound this week, so I'm gonna try and get more 'chapters' of this AU out really soon-ish.
dude your art is so GOOD!!! Do you take any classes or have any tips to share? that resource post you reblogged the other day was helpful but i've felt so stuck in my art. I don't know if you have anything u learned that just made something click for u or anything like that?
Tysm anon!!!👍
In terms of your questions, I apologise i advance for the long answer im about to give and possibly things you already know haha:
I guess in terms of what classes i take, Ive gone from GCSE to A level Art and design (Fine art), and both courses have helped me to learn the importance of observation studies.
However, its moreso all the art i practice in my own time that has played the biggest part in my art improvement journey. I adopted art as a big hobby around 2018, and really ever since then I tend to draw/create for myself every day, however big or small it may be.
I guess my first tip would be to indulge in a 'sketchbook' or space to work in freely, it could be any form but the importance is that its personal and can be picked up whenever. I find that having a sketchbook to draw in has really helped with productivity and creating new ideas. I think you can go into a sketchbook space with any mindset and it can work wonders, like for example if you wanted to focus purely on challenging yourself, you can do that! If you just, want to doodle without thinking, go ahead! After all, its a sketchbook for you and nobody else, so go wild!
My next tip would definitely be, when you are feeling stuck in art, to take inspiration from a wide range of different things be it in real life or on the internet, a building or a really cool tree, since I find it defintiely fuels the creation of new ideas/concepts that can provide a path out of that creative rut. I guess to an extent there may always be periods where you have that 'I have no idea what to draw!' Feeling, and thats okay! Sometimes its refreshing that helps the most. But I often see that the solution to being in a rut is usually REFERENCING, wether it be trying to accurately draw the anatomy of an arm or if I just saw a cool design/pose/style on Pinterest and i drew a bunch of wacky characters from it. In fact, I find that places like Pinterest or Resplash are such good resources to hone imagination and generally most art skills by looking at and drawinf from all the cool images (and get some of that inspo!). And if im not using Pinterest, im usually using an art book as reference! (The itsv and splatoon art book helped me so so much lol)
On the topic of REFERENCING, its mega important! Depending on imagination/memory feels pretty good at times but its always beneficial to have image references in your process when you find its good to have them. I woudl always recommend having a reference when drawing poses/expressions/anatomy because the more you use them, the more you learn about how an object like a face muscle, a torso or even light behaves and looks and the easier it is to draw/depict them.
The next tip is uh YOUTUBE, or any account/person who's art inspires you in particular. I found that certain channels like Ethan Becker, Marc Brunet, Marco Bucci and more have helped me the most to gain confidence in drawing and learning how to practice it better. Of course, theres a lot to learn from a plethora of other channels too, even ones that dont specifically promote themselves as teachers! Also, if theres a certain style/art approach or an artist that appeals to you, study it in any way you like! Analyse an artist's work or ask/find out about their personal process (or even watch a speedpaint/art stream)! Sometimes it can be a big inspiration booster and skill boost to do just that (plus the 'artist' could be any piece of media/thing too!! Like a game or something).
Ok ok last paragraph haha, on the topic of your last question. Thinking back, its hard for me to define any specific moment or thing that gave me a 'click' moment. Its more like a process of growth that starts with learning and understanding a new thing, then familiarizing myself with using it successfully/'correctly' by studying and practicing, so that eventually its like muscle memory or easier to use in my work.
Hope this helps!!! If theres anything else you want to ask, dont be afraid to dm or send another ask!!
#ask#answer#art#im still learning so much but heres all that i can give in its long windedness#theres stuff from like#less than a year ago that i would def redraw haha#but i guess most artists feel that way about some of past work#anywayy#listening to music while sketching away GOES HARD but that might jut be me
AND ANOTHER THING! Going off of my tags on my previous post, outside of me just thinking they're cute I also feel like flowerbyte works better for me purely on a narrative level. One of my biggest pet peeves esp for action movies is when the romantic subplot takes over like half the story without proper development. It doesn't matter WHO it is or how much I like the characters individually I will literally fast forward through every romantic scene if it feels shoehorned in. It makes it so tedious you don't even understand. (Haterism ahead. Well not really 'hate' just mild irritation really. this is looong):
So let's look at Gwen and Miles' relationsip. We start ITSV with Miles basically having a one-sided crush on Gwen. By the end of the film they had just agreed to be friends and have known each other for maybe like a week tops, and *maybe* Gwen reciprocates but it's not extremely clear. Whatever occurs between them in between ITSV and ATSV, we don't see (it's implied that they haven't even seen each other at all for obvious reasons so. oof).
But then we jump into ATSV, and suddenly they're swinging into the sunset talking about how they're "the same"...? Besties. Friends. Niece and nephew. Neither of you know each other dfghjkl
Then the wholeee rest of their scenes together is just the film trying desperately convince us through the music, framing, and even other characters' dialogue that there is romantic (notice how i specify ROMANTIC) tension between these two kids that is just so thick you could cut through it with a butter knife. I'm sorry, but is this tension in the room with us right now...? But okay movie.
Now, compare that to the scene in ATSV where Miles and Margo first bump into each other. They're able to establish romantic chemistry almost IMMEDIATELY! One look and a 'hey'. That's all it fuckin' took! They *both* like each other and it's clear as day.
Then right after, Margo is given a quick implied backstory that instantly gives her and Miles a reason to relate to each other that isn't (necessarily) just about them both being Spider-Man (because, in Margo's words, they're ALL Spider-Man and this means you need more than that to form a genuine connection). Neither of them feel like they can be themselves because their environment at home doesn't allow for it, even without the secret identity. Bada-bing bada-boom instant connection in under 5 minutes and I am still awake by the end of it.
Then, finally, we get a scene that shows that they can, to some extent, trust each other. Margo only just met this dude a few scenes ago, but she immediately goes against Miguel's wishes knowing the consequences and attempts to send him back home because her convictions are stronger than her loyalty to Spider Society. Just that act alone makes her a better ally to Miles than like, half the cast at this point.
...And that creates a bit of a dilemma if Gwiles is meant to be endgame.
As literally everyone and their mother have pointed out by now, Gwen is objectively a bad friend to Miles in this film. But...I would also argue that there are very few instances outside of combat in either film where she's even a *good* friend. And that's sort of the point, isn't it? Gwen has been terrible at friendship for the majority of the time we spend with her because she's traumatized from literally murdering the last good friend she had. Then her dad tried to shoot her. Then Miguel-- you know how it goes. She clearly has a long way to go before even a healthy *friendship* with Miles can start to develop. So that leaves me with a few questions:
A) Why did we wait until the last scene of the SECOND FILM for her to finally decide to be a good friend
B) Why didn't they just give Miles and Gwen more scenes together where they actually get to know each other if their relationship is now so important to the story, and:
C) If Gwen's whole journey is about her inability to maintain strong friendships...Why the FUCK is she the love interest then???
Either we all just got baited, or we are now going to have to spend a decent portion of BTSV watching Gwen try to salvage a friendship that was barely even that developed to begin with, convince the guy whose trust she just lost that she would ALSO make a good girlfriend i guess, and all the while there is now another potential love interest that is clearly, *according to the movie itself*, the better option (or so it seems for now). So like...Where do we go from here?? It just feels like a clumsy narrative decision. And if they do the misogynistic ass 'cat-fight' between two female characters over the main guy I will literally commit a felony. So yeah that's where my head is at right now thank you for reading all the way through my tangent over pixels on a screen sorry everybody
#blabbering#u can disagree but keep it cute#these are just things that don't make sense to ME in MY brain#and again we are only talking about narrative for the most part ship who you want i dont care#.
ive thoughts abt the b team
ik i already posted abt this but i wanna elab more.
so yall know how in itsv miles throws a bagel at j. ohn, and he becomes the spot, right? and in a deleted scene olivia says "the power of the multiverse in the palm of my hand" in ref to doc oc in spoderman 2. and guess who says that line in spiderverse 2? spot! why am i bringing this up? im using it as an example of the bonkers foreshadowing in spiderverse. Things often go from cameos and gags to something BIG. Like how miguel ended up being the secondary antagonist in spoderverse. He went from popping up at the end in a gag cameo scene, to being the antagonist of the second half of the second act and the entirety of the third act. My point is little things matter here.
That brings me to my next point. Now, I love the B Team, and I jus want to see more of them in the next one so this may be a little biased.
In ATSV, at the start of the third act when Miguel is explaining canon events to Miles, Peni pops up, and is given a single line. Now, most people dont/didnt think of this as more than a cameo. But I am not most people mon frer. They could've done this with anyone else, literally anyone else from the B Team, or just a random Spider-person. They couldve easily replaced her scene with the crowd of Spider People looking at him disappointed. But they didnt. They draw attention to her, they have miles EXPLICITLY Notice Her and even say her name. They show off her new mech and let the cam linger on her face more.
And then, in the third act, when Miles is running through Earth 42's nyc, we see in the reflection of a building he runs past, specifically, Noir, Ham and Peni. Specifically them, even thought they arent plot relevant. You even hear Porker saying "You cant save everyone,", his line from the first film. My question is. Why. Them. The producers couldve easily shown Gwen, Peter, and Miguel, or hell, His Mom, Dad and Uncle Aaron, hell maybe kingpin and doc oc and the spot! They couldve easily replaced Hams line with Uncle Aarons Keep Going line, or Peters Leap Of Faith line that im p sure shows up idk my memories fuzzy, But no. It was specifically *those three. * and That One Line.
And then at the end, when we see Gwens Spider-gang, we see Peni in her crossed arms pose behind Hobie, and Noir / Ham right behind Gwen in front of Margo. And in that very scene, just seconds before, we see Peni, and we see her smirking back at the camera from the corner of her eye. Now why did they specifically decide to give Peni this knowing look? It would've made sense for Hobie, as hes the one who helped Miles get free from Miguels cage, but why Peni. Last time we saw her she looked depressed, she looked tired.
Now, here is the crux of my theory. I believe, that just like in ITSV, BTSV is gonna come full circle, and make the B-Team extremely plot relevant. I feel like the producers are dropping little breadcrumbs relating to the plot, but not making it so obvious we immediately catch on. Much like The Spot and The Bagel Incident and Miguel and Miles' Spider and the constant showings-up of the number 42.
In ITSV, Peni is literally the one that gets them all to their home dimensions, she is the one that made the new goober, and got them all home. So I feel like she will play a big role in defeating The Spot. And call me crazy, but I feel like her standing behind Hobie at the end might mean that she works with him to create something that will defeat Spot, or make something that will help, most likely relating to the collider, since Hobie did make their watches.
And, vis-a-vis, Ham and Noir (along with Peni and SP//dr's dismembered arm), play a part in defeating Scorpion and Tombstone, and while they werent extremely important to the Plot, they where part of the Sinister 6, and they where the antagonists of ITSV after all. Next to King Pin, that is. All three of them also took out the alchemax employees (Gwen got sidetracked seeing Miles come back tho), and since Miguel is more a man of hand-to-hand and melee combat unlike spot and his portal fuckery, I feel as though they will be pretty instrumental to defeating Miguel, and maybe, his Migbot (cuz of the concept art that got leaked recently).
(Another thing i wanna discuss is the possibility of doc oc making a comeback in BTSV cuz last we saw of her she did get hit by a truck, but in a deleted scene it shows her throwing herself into the collider, but thats another subject for another time.)
Hi there!
I just found your page and binged your Parallel comic- Safe to say I'm absolutely in LOVE with it!
Dude you nail the characters better than I've ever seen anyone do- HECK to the YEAH!! This is everything I've ever wanted from these shows and more than I thought I'd want like-abugaeuWGBUEWGHUGBA YES!
I was just wondering if you ever listen to any music when you draw? If so what kind?
I’m so glad you like it! I always want to make sure that everyone is completely in character! I’ve also sort of made it my mission to make it sort of a “If there were no flaws, no plot holes, no retcons, no canon inconsistencies, no half written characters, nothing wrong at all, this is what it would be like, because this is how it should be” So I’m very glad I’m achieving my goal! :]
Oh gosh music. I listen to so much freaking music while I’m drawing. I’m ADHD, so I have to have music or I absolutely can not focus at all.
Generally I like listening to hard rock, and I guess electronic? I have two main playlists that I listen to for drawing ROTP comic pages, one is titled “Ninja Turtles” on Apple Music that I made composed of every TMNT song I could find including the video game soundtracks. The other is on YouTube that has all the songs I couldn’t get on Apple Music, (mostly because they’re not American) titled 「ミュタントタトルズ」 because that’s the Japanese name for TMNT.
I think probably my most listened to songs when drawing ROTP are The TMNT 2012 theme song, Last Moment (by Spyair), Shinobi(by GReeeeN), In the Back Room (by syudou), Start a Riot(From SM: ITSV), Sewer Surfin’ (from Turtles in Time), Invincible(by Skillet), a bunch of Nine Inch Nails songs, a few Three Days Grace songs and Re:Re (covered by NateWantsToBattle).
I’m sure there’s tons more, but I don’t want this list to be miles long.
Generally my current favorite band is Nine Inch Nails :]
Good question!
20 Questions Game
Thanks for the tag @maria-de-salinas :)
1. How many works do you have on ao3?
25
2. What’s your total ao3 word count?
50,473
3. What fandoms do you write for?
I’ve written for HP, Gilmore Girls, Avatar: the last airbender, Friends, and various iterations of Spider-Man
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1. Game night (HP)
2. Just another Thursday night (HP)
3. Can’t fight the friction (HP)
4. Would you be so kind as to fall in love with me? (Gilmore Girls)
5. Five Conversations and a dinner date (HP)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
100% every single time. The fact that people read what I write at all blows my mind, so when people comment I love it so much and definitely want to respond and have a lil conversation.
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Probably either The Life and Times of Sirius Black (canon complaint w/ major character death) or I guess What In The World Has Come Over You? (A bad things happen bingo prompt fill with no resolution of the aforementioned bad thing and an open ending. Which I personally dislike more than a sad concrete ending)
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I think probably Would you be so kind. But I’m generally a sucker for a happy ending so there’s a fair number of happy endings
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not really? In my early fandom days a little bit, but I am a huge fan of the block button so. Now I don’t.
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
Do I write it? Yes. Does it ever get finished and/or posted? Not as much. Pretty much everything I’ve written has just been PWPs that I either haven’t finished or don’t like enough to post.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve ever written?
I have posted one (1) crossover and it was an mcu/itsv crossover. It was originally part of a slightly more ambitious series, which was a post-no way home, post-into the spiderverse, mid-canon shattered dimensions crossover. (Despite the fact that shattered dimensions is a fairly unknown (in larger fandom) spiderman game from 2010). Miguel’s characterization is a bit different in that game than in across the spiderverse and after atsv came out I was like. This is going to be torn to shreds by people who have seen that movie and have no other frame of reference for him. No thank u. (Don’t get me wrong! I love atsv! They’re just two different versions of the same character okay).
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge. Someone asked me if they could repost one of my fics once and I was like ??? No??? And I kept an eye on them for a bit but they didn’t so 🤷♂️
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No, but if someone wanted to that would be fucking amazing. So If there’s any interest lemme know 👀
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Again, this is one of those ‘yes but it never saw the light of day’ things again. My partner and I had a fic that we outlined and started writing together almost four years ago but we both just kinda lost interest/started writing less. It still lives on in my drafts though.
14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
Hm. That’s a hard one honestly. Maybe Rory/Jess?
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
There are many wips on my computer, many of which will never see the light of day (the current wip count right now is 112). One I would have liked to finish is the Spider-Man one I mentioned before but honestly. I am fairly certain I won’t.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Characterization
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Action scenes! And sometimes dialogue :/
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I love it when it’s well done. Hate it when it’s just thrown in there to be thrown in there. Wish I could do it myself sometimes, but my French is ✨not good enough for that✨and I refuse to use google translate
19. First fandom you ever wrote for?
Harry Potter
20. Favorite fic you’ve ever written?
Would you be so kind. Absolutely my magnum opus as far as fanfic goes.
okay wait. I watched Into the Spiderverse yesterday again and i have more thoughts. And questions. I have so many questions.
They really did plan a lot this form the beginning, huh?
The 42 was very obviously planted everywhere, even at the start of the movie, like damn, talk about holding it under our nose and us not seeing it lol. The theme of the movie was put right under our nose by that essay Miles had to write about expactations and who he wants to be. At the end of Itsv he found an answer for himself and that answer is bascially what he upholds in atsv when he's confronted with....well the Everything. It's also seen in the mural he draws which is a loopy silhouette of himself that's eerily smiliar to Spot (talk about creating your own threat lol)
(also for how long are ppl (in the movies i mean) going to blame Miles for things Fisk and Doc Oc did. They ripped the hole in the multiverse. They created the collider. Miles had literally nothing to do with that. Like. 'you ripped a hole in the multiverse'. no. The others did, they got the spider over here from 42 and they were the ones losing said spider. Miles literally had no doing in ANY of that. My boy was just trying to live his life and stumble trhough the lyrics of his fav song)
And given that they obviously planned so much aheard... Didn't Gwen already save her dad? Isn't the canon already disrupted?
In her flashback in itsv we already see in the shadow her punching Green Goblin and him turning into Peter. But she also said 'saved my dad' with the visual of pulling him out of a bullet's way. The 'canon' event so far has been 'a police officier close to Spidey getting crushed after saving a child'. So maybe that wasn't the canon event but isn't not being able to save the captain A Thing?
And in atsv Gwen's dad has quit. He's the captain she's closest to. So her world, her canon is already disrupted. Her universe isn't collapsing. Also as we have seen with the spidey people in itsv not everyone had an uncle die on them. It was their father (Peni), best friend (Gwen) and Uncle Ben(jamin) (Noir/Peter B.). And we've seen in atsv so many more Spidey ppl so who's to say there aren't more options about this? Who says that it has to be death? you're telling me in infinte possiblities there isn't one spiderman out there that avoided the whole death thing?
Also, in itsv Gwen was blown into last week. Meaning the displacement wasn't just world, but also time. Is that important? How did the Time Part play into the Space Time Collapse? Why is Gwen the only one so far we've seen being affected not only by Space but also by Time? Also what 'canon' event did Miguel interrupt for his universe to collapse? And what happened in Pav's world with the big blob that took out part of his world? Can it be contained? How? And if it can be contained, can that be used against Spot?
(Alt: Meme of 'I don't need sleep. I need answers)
Anyway, couldn't sleep for three hours afterwards yesterday because i was doing mental gymnastics to get my answers and turned up with a frustrating 'answers were not found' and I'm reduced to throwing out theories that i will need to wait a while to get answers for.
#spiderman across the spiderverse#atsv spoilers#smarter people than me might've already had this thought and maybe even found out things i have overlooked but this is what didn't let me#sleep yesterday#there's obviously gone a real huge amount of planning into the films#therefore there must be answers to many of the questions#and a lot of things from itsv have proven themselves to be important in atsv#so who is to say how much we're currently missing in atsv that won't be clear until the next movie?????#i have so much brain rot about this lol#gwen stacey#miles morales#atsv thoughts
Do ya watched the new Spider-man across the spider-verse's cartoon?
Hello person who asked me a question all the way back in november of last year, im so sorry for making you wait so long for such a basic answer 😭😭
hopefully to make up for this, if i yap enough itll be like a years worth of answer, so strap in
To answer the question though yup!! I watched ATSV around a month after it came out. At first i wanted to watch it asap in cinemas but unfortunately it was banned here in egypt because of the fricking. Trans pride flag that appears for 2 seconds in gwens room in the blurry obscured background so that sucked
After waiting a long time for it to have a digital release eventually i gave in because the spoilers were getting too unavoidable and just watched a camrip with my friends in their house. Which was very unfortunate but i still enjoyed it. And i definitely enjoyed rewatching it like 5 times since then when the digital release was out
I think the movie visually innovates even more than the first one did. Theres nothing i feel was lacking they really did build up on everything from ITSV and then some. Everything was so beautiful and full of life and all the designs be it new characters or old are just so good and the animation and aesthetics are top notch. Its the kind of movie you watch frame by frame on purpose
I do think the movie was hurt by being a half movie though, as it does very much feel like half a story. I do like that gwen goes through something of an arc in this movie so at least *something* gets concluded. And its nice to have an implied transfem character take center stage!
I enjoyed a lot how grown up miles feels in this movie, especially when you contrast it with some early production deleted scenes and the teaser clip they released a long while ago. There he felt like he was still his ITSV self still sort of needing to prove himself, but in this movie he really does feel like he has grown. And for that im thankful i wouldnt want the movie to basically just repeat his arc twice
I mean it kind of is the same arc but its from different perspectives (which i dont think is ideal tbh and i wouldve appreciated a third direction but oh well) in the first movie he felt the need to prove himself and that theres a chance he could be Spider-Man. He wanted the other spiders' approval and to get to be just like them. But in this movie hes more confident and knows his place, this is a kid that knows he's Spider-Man, and he dont give a fuck what you say. Hes got the whole world telling him he doesnt have it figured out and maybe even his brain is saying that to him too but hes still gonna be like "no, im right youre wrong. debate over"
And at the same time it doesnt feel like stubbornness. He takes the time to understand the situation, assessed it smartly, comes up with his own conclusions, and acts accordingly. This miles is definitely not just a kid anymore (so much so that to this day im actually still suspicious that miles was meant to be 17 or 18 but they decided last minute they didnt wanna have that big of a timeskip)
Spot was pretty great in this movie too. I knew from the start that despite being sort of a nothing-villain in the comics spiderverse was gonna have a looot of fun with him, especially ever since i saw that one piece of art they released way back before even the teaser i believe, which had spot with sketch lines above him like the shapes guidelines you draw when doing a rough sketch. And they certainly did not disappoint there hes definitely reality warping with a capital R W. Really i got no complaints about spot i think hes a fantastic villain, though i wish the movie took him a little more seriously. Just removing that "i think he kicked his own butt haha!!!!" scene wouldve made all the difference in the world imo
miss cheng cameo goes hard
Miguel is probably the most conflicting thing for me in this movie, i cannot decide if i like this adaptation of him or not, though im leaning towards not i think. I will say im glad to finally have a piece of media where Spider-Man 2099 is like the main focus finally, hes the main character next to miles and gwen. Ive been a fan of his 90s comics for as long as ive been a fan of comics, and other than SM Edge of Time he never got his moment to shine really. Now this absolute unit of a man is coming in and absolutely stealing the show whenever hes onscreen. It was nice, as a longtime SM2099 fan to see now in 2023 just miguel fanart and miguels ass n titties everywhere on my timeline
They do get a lot of stuff right with this adaptation, even small stuff i wouldnt expect just anyone to get. Like his talons!! Most people draw them like long nails like typical claws but they actually extend from under his finger like a hook, and i was so glad to see the movie get that right haha. He also has.... a cape. He doesnt really use it which like i hate but maybe capes are too much trouble to animate idfk. He has his fangs and was gonna use them on vulture (loved vultures design so fucking much btw) so clearly they remembered he can inject paralyzing venom so that gets huge thumbsup from me even if he doesnt get to actually use it
This movie also gets miguel so right in terms of characterization. Nothing will ever beat Chris Daniel Barnes' take on miggy but Oscar Isaac does a great job in his own right as well and is definitely a take i can accept, im just probably too used to hearing chris barnes' voice playing EoT so many times over the years. And its great to have a hispanic actor doing the voice this time!! In general i love the fact that he has darker skin and speaks a bit of spanish in this movie, atsv rememberes miguel is half hispanic more than the comics themselves seem to sometimes haha
This miguel talks like how comic miguel talks he quips how he quips he has the same sarcastic deadpan humor hes funny and snarky and talks like hes smarter but not in an arrogant way because he can kind of back it up. He also fights how i imagine miguel would fight he uses his claws he gets brutal, shits AWESOME. When it comes to dialogue and interactions, this miguel definitely lives up to how i imagine Peter David wouldve written him
Whats really bothering me about miguel is how, despite them nailing the characters personality so so well, the movie also seems not that interested in him and his lore and world at all. He just doesnt have the love and care and history that Peter B Parker seemed to have
I mean, if its still in the year 2099 then wheres Alchemax? The whole point of SM 2099's comics is that Alchemax is a megacorporation thats infected most corners of life. It should have a looming presence EVERYWHERE, but its not even here as an easter egg. Which i have to say is quite bizarre considering Alchemax ALREADY exists in this universe front and center so why not even a reference. I think this is such a crucial part of SM2099's mythos that removing it is genuinely a problem for adapting Nueva York. Not to mention the complete lack of any sort of cops or security at all, again a looming presence that should definitely exist in 2099. Without those aspects Uptown becomes just like any generic futuristic city (when it should, at least, be a generic DYSTOPIAN futuristic city, lmao)
Also the movie's lack of interest in having any references to Gabriel or Conchata or Dana what so ever. I get that this is bordering on fan service but idk, at the very least Dana right??? I mean she dies in the comics, surely part of what miguel longed for in that alternate universe he went to was that Dana still lived there so why not nudge to the fans a little. At least through the form of having miguel comic scenes show in the slideshow thing he made for miles (though i get not having any miguel scenes there, since miguel probably wouldnt intentionally reveal his past to someone just like that)
I mean come on this movies so uninterested in any fan service in general when it comes to miggy. No references to comic covers or something no calling miguel S-Man he says shock ONCE, i feel like its the little bits of fanservice like that that dont like overbear on the story but really add a lot by nodding to the fans and showing that you did a lot of homework
Theres also the weird way they revise his powers here, seemingly working in the form of regular doses he takes to give himself powers rather than be powers he has like the comics, and the lack of organic webbing. Theres also no reference to his enhanced vision as far as i remember. And i have NEVER been a fan of miguels suit having advanced tech built into it. The watch is one thing, the holographic cape and nanomachine esque suit which uses energy and the laser webs and energy spikes he uses to latch onto stuff its all just ehhhh i never vibed with that in the comics and i definitely dont like it here (save that shit for the white suit at least if youre gonna go that route)
This lack of interest in his powers also means, if theres no alchemax looming existence in the world, and the movie intentionally REFUSES to give us a "my name is miguel o'hara" moment to go over his origin, then we are left with actually nothing to imply alchemax even exists in this world
Just no real interest in what made Spider-Man 2099 work so well in his world, as a privileged man who went down and saw the real world and realized how wrong he was about just everything and that he must rebel against those privileged like him and more. Who works with a suit made of fabric just like any ol human against super cops armed with armor and guns
Instead he runs a whole society himself (ironically, the only thing to imply alchemax's existence now. maybe this movie is a miguel from after the point in the comics where he takes over alchemax, which would mean alchemax's only implication in this world is that miguel runs a multibillion dollar corporation and uses its resources how he wants. not good...), hes not aggressively anti corpo anymore, he has a teched up suit, and he just ACTS like a ceo. This guy is basically spider-punk before spider-punk was a thing, and yet here he is being in the exact opposite side to hobie!
Honestly if it werent for a few factors like the powers thing id have actually said "wait let them cook" because i wouldve then thought that miguel being so wrong is the POINT of this whole thing like miguel is a sellout and theyre gonna call him out and reference how he USED to be in flashbacks, but i honestly do not believe that was actually their intention despite it actually fitting so well in an almost genius way if it WAS on purpose
It comes off a bit MCU-ish how they almost dont have faith in how cool 2099 is and think the only thing worth "salvageing" is miguel and his attitude, when the world is pretty rich with things fans like me wouldve loved to see either recreated in the spiderverse style or innovated on and made into something completely new and interesting; and also non-fans wouldve loved to see to learn more about SM2099 and his world. I mean half the fandom thought Miguel is a vampire because he has fangs, thats how much this movie doesnt do anything for the world of 2099
Wew that was a doozy, sorry for rambling so much about miguel when talking about movie-not-about-miguel, its just between Miles Gwen and Miguel he was the one i was most starved for content for and he was the one im most educated on and on what i would want to see when i see him onscreen haha
hope this longass post full of insane ramblings of a mad woman was worth the yearlong wait in my tumblr asks shdsjhdsdhs again sorry it took me so long to look at my asks
You guys don't understand though like, ever since Miles hugged him at the end of itsv I immediately thought "there is no way he didn't know that was Miles" like. This concept was built off the thought that his dad does know he’s just sort of...in denial? Like. It's so...insane, his conscious mind just kind of rejects it, but that's his son. You can't convince me he can't tell, when he sees him, when they talk, when "spider-man" hugged him. It's gotta be in there he just can't let himself believe it. It's too much. His 14, 15, 16 year old son, a vigilante, taking on the job left by a grown man, against the likes of Fisk. It's too...fantastical. No, not Miles. Not his son. he's not like Aaron, not living a dangerous double life, he can't be
But then. There's that...moment. Just like when he quietly willed him to get back up. He finds Spider-Man collapsed in an alleyway, breathing shaky, clearly disoriented. His suit's torn in places, there's blood, that's normal for Spider-Man though, a normal sight for a cop, too, but this Spider-Man, he’s younger than the last one, Jeff barely even thinks before striding over, crouching down. Almost instinctively he reaches for the mask's seam but stops, hand hovering as he tries to check in with him. Spider-Man slurs a response, starting to push himself up but wincing at a pain in his left arm. He might have a concussion, maybe a broken arm, Jeff tells him not to move, he’s so scrawny, easy to hoist up comfortably familiar in his arms, and he moves back out to the street quickly.
He’s done this countless times holding him helping civilians, getting people to safety, especially with all the "super" catastrophes that started popping up after the first Spider-Man. It's a blur, other first responders rushing to help civilians, put out fires, usher people to safety. It's automatic, carrying him toward the ambulance, EMTs moving to meet him, and it's not until they have him on the gurney, ignoring slurred protests, until they've secured him in the back and the doors shut and the vehicle pulls away, that distantly, he hopes they don't take his mask off. That's his son.
He’s not done working. Watching after it for only a moment, heart in his throat, when he’s snapped out of it by a question called to him. Was that Spider-Man? No Yes.
It's hours. He does his job, files reports, communicates everything he needs to, and then he’s sent home. All he had was some scrapes and bruises, and a burn on his right elbow. But the whole time he hasn't stopped thinking about it about Miles. His weak question, the night Peter Parker died Dad...do you really hate Spider-Man?, the hug after Fisk, the way he moves, the way he talks. The way he sorta slants when he’s anxious, any times between now and then they've spoken, he’s seen Spider-Man swinging away just as he arrives on scene, the times Miles came home on the weekends hiding scrapes and bruises and a black eye, with weak excuses he’s always been so bad at lying, nothing like Aaron, how worried he's been. Miles is doing well, in a good school, he’s so smart and compassionate and funny he’s a hero, when he lost his temper and they argued because Miles wouldn't tell them how he actually got hurt, and later when he apologized, all he could do was remind Miles they're there for him, no matter what, and Miles told him he knew. Still wouldn't say but they'd hugged and he hoped and prayed it was enough he could help this time, stop it from spiraling this time.
And it all comes down to one moment. Jeff waiting up for him at the table. Told Rio he needed to talk to him alone. If Miles walks through that door fine, it's all in his head, of course he's not Spider-Man please, please don't be spider-man. Or.
He walks through the door, banged up, trying to be purposefully quiet as he closes the door only to freeze when he sees his dad waiting for him. He smiles, that smile where his eyes crinkle up and his eyebrows furrow and he’s looking for any way out as he slowly says "heeeey dad".
It's undeniable now. They both know. And even though he’s had hours to figure this all out and to think of what to say, it's all pushed aside by an anger that surges forward. A sigh, running a hand down his face, When did you think it would be important enough to tell us? Do you have any idea how-
Miles tries, weakly, to stop the spiral, barely inching forward into the room, I wanted to tell you, I just...you're- I didn't want you to-
He’s so upset and hurt and he’s been a vigilante for years, his teenage son, the one he saw holding his brother's, his uncle's body in his dying moments, Miles has been the new Spider-Man the entire time, and he never told them. All that fear and frustration decades of it bubbling to the surface, he doesn't know if he wants to scream or cry but the further he gets into the argument, Miles struggling to defend himself, the more it crumbles in, his son, his 16 year old son cringed away from him in fear, wounds still fresh from the lies protecting him, and it's not anger anymore, his voice breaks and he has to turn away, running a hand over his face and brushing off the memory of a hateful glare that doesn't belong to his son taking a ragged breath.
He turns back, and Mile's eyes glance up to meet his, the making of tears there, maybe reflecting his own, and he closes the distance, pulling Miles against him, taller now but still so scrawny, careful of any sore spots, I told you we would always be here for you. But I can't catch you if I don't know you're gunna fall. Cupping a hand behind his head, cradling him, Alright?
Miles is clinging, far less mindful of his injuries, as he nods against his dad's shoulder. A choked whisper, yeah, alright.
Just spent the last half hour frantically exploring a scenario where Jeff figures out Miles is Spider-Man after carrying him (still masked) to EMTs after he got too roughed up to get up right away during a scuffle with [insert villain here]
what's your favourite moment from the movie and why?
Shoot, that's such a difficult question; I really love this movie a lot so choosing is hard.
The answer may end up changing at some point, but the beginning of the movie (aka before the starting credits appear,) is my favorite.
I know this is a kind of a cop-out answer, especially because the reason I call this my favorite, is not so much because of what happens in the beginning (even though I still love the scenes for what they are,) but because the beginning of this movie is when I fell in love with it.
I wasn't going to give a long response but let's face it I can't.
The rest of this response would be part anecdotical, part praising the hell about this movie, and probably, some incomprehensible squealing because I love this movie so much is hard to find the right words.
Let's start with the anecdotical part.
I am not a movie person in the slightest, before last month I wasn't even a big fan of going to the movies; honestly, for most of my life the big screen, the sound, and such weren't enough to make it better that watch it in the comfort of my home.
This movie changed that for me. I had no way to run the numbers but I wouldn't be surprised if I had gone to the theatre this past month more times than I had gotten the past 10 years. I am going to be certain that's going to be the case by the time this movie stops showing up in theatres.
I decided to go and see this movie when it came out because I have Fridays free, and while I really liked ITSV, it wasn't my favorite movie, just one a enjoyed a lot but wasn't able to tick all the boxes for me to get up there.
Why go to see it when it came out? Because I didn't trust the internet wouldn't spoil me and even if the first film wasn't in my top 3, and while I wasn't sure the movie could live up to the bar the first set (Especially since the trailer didn't convince me.) One way or another, I want to see it for myself with as little information as I could so I would judge the movies for merit alone.
Because of the type of movie it was, the regular seating had already run out, so I ended up getting an extra expensive viewing. I remember seating in the theatre with my also overpriced food (Since I didn't go to see movies often may as well,) wondering if this was going to be worth all this money.
Let's than 20 minutes in, the movie proves to me it's worth that and much more.
This, this was the shot that I saw when I thought "Oh it was worth it."
Is hard to describe how hard this movie hits and let me remind you, this shot is before it hits the 15-minute mark. I had never liked something this much this quickly.
I remember being glued to my seat, absolutely baffled how in so little time this movie was able to make me adore it.
The beautiful art direction, oh I wish I understood art better because I know there is so much more going on that I don't have the vocabulary for it.
I caught on other little details, like for me it was obvious how the fact that Gwen's apartment had warm colors except for her room was a representation of how much she is isolating herself, how she herself is blue by drowning in her isolation, and how she only became warm by hugging her father, the only bond he has left with someone who is active in her life.
Seeing Gwen switch between her civilian self and costume, thinking to myself to what degree she is stuck to her costume that she feels the responsibility of the mantle in her bones even when there is nothing going on.
I have 0 music knowledge really, but Self-love is my favorite song in the entire movie, and part of it is hearing the lyrics resonate with what's going on the screen.
It's funny how I went from really not caring too much about something that happened to a character, to "The first four times I watched this movie I was crying at this part."
Granted, I know exactly why. Execution, time, and tone play heavily into this, after wall, we went from the moment being said in passing to having the flashback of how it plays it out, and is of course, a lot worse.
It reminds me of Encanto in a way, where Alma talking about the death of her husband doesn't come with a twist, in fact none of what she told us is really new information. However because we are seeing things from her true perspective rather that just being told a sanitized version of it, it hits all the harder.
Which is exactly what happens here.
(I didn't include the scenes of Gwen with Peter because the ATSV makes me teary eyed and I already talked a lot about it in other posts, and the one in ITSV is funny because is deadass Peter B model. That also plays a part.)
And this brings us to another reason why this sequence made me fall in love with this movie: Gwen.
For this, I need to talk about my opinion of Gwen in ITSV: I liked her, and that's it.
I thought her design was cool, I adored the way she move in combat as if she was dancing. I liked that she was a good fighter and so put together. If this movie would have come out a few years earlier, I know my teenage self would have had a massive crush on her.
Yet that was as much as I could say about her, the movie didn't give us as much time to get to know her, and while the cool, badass persona is fun, I need more than that to like a character.
Then this movie comes, and has me crying for Gwen at the beginning of the movie.
I came from barely having any attachment to this character aside from liking the aesthetics, to wanting to hug and tell her everything was going to be okay. As far as I am concerned she is my daughter.
(Let's ignore the fact I am not even 10 years older than her and in no way, shape or form ready to be a parent.)
I don't really have an analysis to make this, this is just a good joke that I like.
It does however kind of illustrate my point now, doesn't it?
This part is moving, is emotional, is an artistical marvel and this post doesn't even mention Vulture (a lot of people had talked about that already, including people who know enough about animation that can truly appreciate it; so I will just say my jaw was on the floor by that point.) All while being entertaining as heck.
Movies tend to be too long for me, in fact, I saw the new Indiana Jones recently and I was grasping for my phone around the 50 minute mark. Not to say the movie is bad (not really my taste but that's on me,) but to illustrate that this isn't my type of thing.
The new Indiana movie is only 10 minutes longer than ATSV, yet ATSV is the movie I had watched MULTIPLE TIMES already, and still sit through without being the least bit bored. It doesn't matter the number of times I had said this already because I still can't believe it.
And is at the beginning of this movie that it encapsulates the essence as to why it works so well, this is the part that reminds me why I had gotten to watch this on the big screen the number of times I had, is the reason why this movie has basically become my comfort watch, the thing I see when I am stressed out and I want to immerse myself in something I love.
I said at the beginning is a cop-out answer, and this is why; the beginning has all the part that reminds me why I adore the movie to the degree I had done, and while I love so many scenes, this is the part that comes to mind when I think of favorite.
Okay theory time. Walk with me.
When I was rewatching ITSV, my brother made a good point. When Norman says "It's not up to me." He asked "why not?" And that's a valid question to ask. Why is Norman Osborn taking orders from Kingpin?
In terms of power, Norman wins. Intelligence? Norman has that too. So I started thinking about this. Why aren't you in control?
So. I figured Kingpin probably has something Norman wants. Something to make him follow orders. Maybe revenge? No, because he's clearly trying to keep Peter out, not kill him. So something more important than Spider-Man.
A cure then? It would certainly help to explain Norman's aggression and desperality.
But no. Again, Norman has the intelligence to pull this off himself. And the Norman I know would be caught dead before being seen working for someone else. Speaking of which,
he dies. He straight up dies for this. Maybe it could've been accidental, an unforseen product of his attack against Peter. But again, Norman's not just some wild animal. Despite how he goes from talking to roaring (and we'll get back to that), he is Norman Osborn. Why would he risk destroying the machine and ending his own life in a last ditch attempt to kill Peter? What's the point in getting a cure if you're just going to die without it?
So no. At least. I don't think so. I think it has to be something more important than a cure.
But wait. This is an adaptation of Earth 1610. The Ultimates Universe. Maybe he lost someone? Who did 1610 Norman lose that could be used as-
Oh. Oh yeah. His son. The thing that, especially if comic-accurate, he would feel guilt for the most.
And we know the collider was built to bring back loved ones. That's the whole reason Kingpin has it, to bring back his wife and son.
And we know they ran tests before the movie begins, because that's how Gwen got there. That's why Kingpin knows that "it's a hell of a freakin light show".
So maybe that's how he got Norman aboard. He showed him the potential of what it could do. What it could bring back. He leveraged his son above him to use his intelligence and use him as a sort of gatekeeper.
It would explain why Norman is so angry, so desperate to just keep Peter out. Why he takes orders from someone he could easily subdue. Why he's reduced to roaring and snarling as the fight enters the collider. Why he's willing to die for whatever was promised.
Because his greatest regret, his greatest failure, his greatest loss- could be undone.
