My badly written and too long Hollow Knight AU

Little Ghost won, and the City came alive again. Bugs awoke from the light and began to walk with purpose. After the repairs, it seems identical really, besides the statute in the town square. The rich go to the colosseum and bet on the fools there to try and earn riches. They are amazed by the spectacle of the Grimm Trope. They dine in the pleasure house and listen to singers trained by Marissa the butterfly, now gone. The poor still work their shells off, a spared Myla’s shift gets relieved by another after too many years. She takes her goods back and sells them for food, and goes to sleep, unafraid of blinding dreams. Lower than the working class, maggots hiding under awnings from the rain. The days of them being murdered for sport are over, at least. The Regent gave them permission to carry nails, made by the Nailsmith and his husband Sheo, whose brothers and their mentor Sly train new guards. Life continues as it always did. The Hive lives happily, with a new queen. The Mantis Tribe claimed Fog Canyon as well, and The Regent does not see the worth of contesting for it, along with Greenpath, given back to the Unn. Deepnest busies the Regent more than the opulent, drenched, capital. 

The Regent of Hollownest is The Queen of Deepnest as well. She has no permanent home, she never did. Born in Deepnest, yes, but raised in the silver palace and trained under the Mantis Lords and Vespa, in the hive. It was there she took the name Hornet. She protected the ruins of Hollownest and now begins to foster its rebirth. She is tough and reserved and cares only in secret, to secret things. Her kingdom has fallen into disrepair. The Weavers left long ago, and the Devout fell into chaos after the death of Herrah and the awakening. They honored Hornet as their queen, but there was too much hunger, not having eaten in many years. Most of them tore each other apart. She tried to stop them, organize them into a proper hunting party. That failed, so she took to hunting for them. That failed as well. They became mad in the way the forgotten champion of the Coliseum did, without the help of the Light. She could not help them.

Hornet’s claim to the throne of Deepnest is undisputed, but cannot take true power over her father’s kingdom, as The White Lady lives on. Nor does she want to. Eventually, The White Lady, with the danger of the Radiance passed, does leave her gardens and retake the throne. Hornet abdicates it gratefully. She knows that with the kingdom rebuilt, it is only a matter of time until The Pale King returns to join his mate. Hornet did not wish to be there when he finally did, slipping into the exalting crowd and disappearing without the king knowing she was ever there. 

The Pale King reigns gratefully and secretly. He attempts to forget the sealing and all of the tragedy leading up to and after it. Luckily, nobody remembers it that will divulge it. Ogrim and Ne’mer came out of their hiding places. Isma untangled herself from the plant life that kept her safe from the infection. Drya awakened when The White Lady left. Only Hemogal could not be returned, but four knights were enough to defend the King, and keep his secrets. There was only one other who knew. She wanted these memories to be saved, the martyrs honored. She paints the whole story, the last and only record of the Radience’s return. Hornet must enter the White Palace occasionally, despite her scorn. As the queen of Deepnest, she is needed for diplomacy meetings. She is taciturn but authoritative. Her Father knows who she is but is too cowardly to admit her parentage. She does not care.

The only place Hornet feels free of trapping is in Greenpath, a spot saved for herself and her siblings. A tree bore thousands of scratches made by Hornet’s claws, one for each mask in the Abyss. All the masks she could find were strung onto vines. In her rage and grief for the fallen Devout and the missing Weavers, she drove Nosk back into its cavern and guarded it until it starved to death, then gathered the masks of the confused little ones that creepy into deepnest unaware confused by figures of each other. Little Ghosts’, split in half, was held at a place of honor, surrounded by flowers and all but one of their charms, (The Grimmchild, returned to its father) She rests there and holds vigil for all children of The Pale King. She murdered many of them. She needed to keep her kingdom safe from vessels seeking to fulfill their purpose. If they couldn't defeat her, they wouldn't stand a chance against the Radiance. She tries not to mourn them, to feel guilty. She knew it was the only option. She knows she will never forgive herself. 

She atones by caring for her most secret and guarded thing, a wounded vessel, once thought to be hollow. It is saddened and ashamed, weakened in both body and mind. She is all it has left, and she will not fail it. They speak through signs and drawings and movements. It sometimes has difficulty with recognizing that she is not spiteful, that her requests for it to move so she can care for its wounds are not orders in the way it is used to. She weaves bandages and sings lullabies sung to her by their mother. They should have been the one to hear them. In return, it lets her have something to care for, be gentle with. They are the children of the Pale King. One rejected, one rejecting. The Vessel’s pain is numbed, but it is not gone. It cries out in a way only known to void, silent and trembling but still is sensed by Hornet, who rushes to comfort it. 

Perhaps the Higher Beings heard it too. Perhaps it was just an accident. Perhaps it was fate. But somehow, the Pale King knows of the Vessel. He orders Isma to peer through the plant life, to reach and feel through every leaf. She does not want to report it, knowing what will happen. But the King's word is law. The gendered child, his soldier trained in preservation, does something impossible: Cares for the failed vessel. He knows her in meetings: reserved, hostile. He fears her and what she knows, what she represents. The giggling kid, who loved and didn’t understand what was asked of her when she was handed her needle. He wants to see his other child, see for himself the damage that Isma described. It feels pain, it feels, period. He needs to care for it, to apologize. He flags Hornet down, and asks her to bring it to him. She stares at him coldly. 

Hornet reports it to Hollow. It is not fair to burden it with this choice, it is not fair to take away any more of its agency. It does not want its father to see it like this, weak and feeling. It will come back when it is strong, a soldier once again. Hornet tells their father no. 

The Pale King needs to make amends with his child. He knows it is injured. He understands Hornets want to keep her sibling safe, but he is determined. Hornet will capitulate when he sees what he is willing to do. He sends an army of Kingsmolds and his champions and soldiers and a fighter from a far off land, named Lace.

The kingsmolds are easy, Hornet is a child of their creator and knows the commands to immobilize them. The soldiers are not prepared for ranged combat. The champions are not willing enough to be a threat. Lace is a problem, but all she needs to do is protect her sibling. But she is overwhelmed. There are too many. She almost tries to wrap herself in her thread of silk, but that will leave Hollow unsafe. She backs up to her sibling, completely cornered. The once-hollow knight sees its sibling endangered by protecting it. This is not acceptable. Soldiers approach them. Too many for Hornet to take with her needle. But it’s nail…No. That would be breaking all the rules. 

Hornet is knocked back, falling and springing back up instantly. Hemolymph stains her cloak. Her mask is cracked, revealing pincers. She looks back at it, and they curl into a sad smile. From behind, a miserable little aphid jumps with sharp weapons. It acts but does not think, but entirely unlike it was supposed to. Three bugs are knocked back by its nail, swung by an injured arm. The champions see this, the chosen child attacking its fathers other weapons. There is silence. 

“Retreat!” Bellows Drya. This cannot be dealt with now.   

The Pale King gets the news silently, obviously pained. The White Lady comforts him, but this does not trouble her personally. He wants to go to Greenpath himself, but spies report that they are gone. 

It was a troubling thing, getting her sibling to Deepnest. The quickest way went through the Queen’s gardens. She won’t do that to Hollow, a name given somewhere along this journey. So she goes and asks her mentors, the Mantis Lords, for safe passage. They recognize the bond between siblings, like the ones they share. They grant it. The jorney is long, Hollow too weak still to travel far without rest. When they get there, they bundle into the suspended nests. Hollow appreciates the darkness, and she brings plants that can survive in her kingdom. But the constant chitter of creatures, though dulled, still unnerves them, so she sings them lullabies from her memories of the same place. Hollow falls asleep in her lap.

Oh my god, I would love to see a Hollow Knight AU written by you guys!!! It's one of my favorite games!

Based on your stories, and you guys write an amazing family dynamic that warms and cheers sad hearts. I can easily imagine the Creator taking on the role of the Pale King, while the Shadow Lord could be Kill Code, who emerges from the abyss to search for the children and other family members who are lost in Hallownest Anyway, it's just an idea, I'm sure that whatever you write, if you decide to do it, will be great, I hope both have a great day, take care of yourselves!

Hollow Knight spoilers ahead for those who need it!

In one of the variants for the AU you would be correct in that KC would be the Shade Lord, but the Creator wouldn't be the Pale King, but the Radience!

In this version it's the first version/original Eclipse, who would fill in the Knight/Ghost's role, because the Shade Lord is Ghost's stronger version (kinda), and since Eclipse the OG and KC are made from the same homicide code, it kinda made sense. Solar's the Hollow Knight. A separate version (which funnily enough is the older version) actually has Solar and Eclipse switch roles, since at the end of the day, their base code is still the same.

The main other version actually has version one Eclipse himself as the Shade Lord, with Solar being the Hollow Knight, and 3rd/4th version of Eclipse (our current canon Eclipse) being Ghost. Same reason as with the previous versions, OG Eclipse is the "better" version of current Eclipse (whom Moongleam and I call something else, just like 2nd iteration of Bloodmoon gets a different name). Funnily the Radience in this version is actually Dark Sun.

Regardless of whichever version it is, there are a few roles that never change! These are:

Moon is always the Pale King - ties nicely into him creating Eclipse, and PK creating the Vessels;

Sun is the White Lady, in this case being the White Lord, but he'd take on a much more active role of raising the chosen Vessel;

Ruin is always Grimm, his pretended insane side being the Troupe Master, while his real serious side being the Nightmare King;

Lunar is always a Sibling at the bottom of the Abyss;

Monty is Milibelle. That does not need further explanation;

Solar Flare is Broken Vessel;

Earth is always Hornet;

A ship that I have drawn about but haven't really gone into depth in this AU is Mallow, Markoth, and Hollow Knight/Pure Vessel(thanks to @sumtoinfinity for giving me that ship name, it is absolutely adorable).

I have written their interactions in my other project, Could We Have Peace? but I barely touched on their relationships for this AU. I have only made drawings and mentioned they were a couple in Bugs That Warm Up Five Cold Days, which was a short fic I made for the AU.

But first, let me go over some parts of the AU as there aren't many scenarios in which these characters would even meet.

(Also sorry, but this is longer then I intended it to be)

So the infection happens, not so great. The Pale King enacts the vessel plan, also not so great.

He enacted this plan before the infection became worrisome. This way the vessel can grow to prime form just in time to seal the infection. He knew that void could seal the radiance, however, he didn't know the powers that she had. So over after the Vessel was more than halfway grown, he requested the assistance of the moth tribe. The appointed Seer and her son end up going to the Palace as they are the two most knowledgeable bugs that know what the Radience is capable of.

So one of the things that I questioned was the timeline and how much of an age difference there was between the two. I don't think Markoth is actually that old, he just acts a lot older.

For some age references for the AU, the Nail Master(Oro, Mato, and Sheo ) were barely in their tweens when the Pure Vessel ascended out of the abyss, and Markoth was just a young child. Markoth is younger than the Nail Masters. I don't think how we count time is the same way they were, but if I were to give an age ratio I would say that PV would be 21 and Markoth would be 25 around the time PV is revealed to be impure. Now I made a fic called Almost Like a Statue which isn't part of the AU but kinda of gives an outline of the timeline and the only difference between the AU and the story is the very last scene.

Anyways the vessel is revealed to be impure and a new plan needs to be made. Both Markoth and his mother end up getting invited to the Palace to discuss the Radiance even more. Eventually, after a month after the vessel is revealed to be impure, he finally sees them again, looking just upset as their hands are doing controlled motions.

Markoth approaches them and they are immediately taken aback as ever since their reveal nobody even looked in their direction as they don't have a purpose anymore. He tried to talk to them commented on their hand motion and realized it kinda looks like sign language. At that point, the vessel signed hello to Markoth and tried to start a conversation in poor sign language. Even though they were poorly signing, Markoth understood what they were trying to say and responded back, also signing to them.

Eventually, they had to get paper as the Pure Vessel only knew basic sign language and they only started learning sign language. They explained how they are trying to learn but everyone simply wants them to write what they want to say instead of everyone learning sign language to just speak with one bug. The drawing of this interaction here,

Now every time Markoth visits the Palace, he talks to the vessel and practice sign language with them. They started interacting more and slowly started to become good friends. Earlier on in their friendship, there were already bugs restricting their interaction, and it was the White Lady.

In the post I made about the WL and PK, I explained how WL wished she could have a do-over with a younger kid so she could mold them to her liking. She however is still trying to do this with the Pure Vessel, trying to pick a name for them, making them attend tea time with other nobles so they can be cultured. Of course, she didn't want this commoner to hang out with her child whom she practically neglected. PK was a bit off-put as moths are more likely to get infected and PK is also sealing away the moth's old god. He only made a comment that they should attend the city party and ball to find more suitable friends while WL tried to fill up their schedule with pointless parties with fake friends.

Eventually, the Vessel named themselves Howl, and their and Markoth's relationship grew. He eventually started gifting them stuff like chocolate and small trinkets from the outside world while Howl was able to get him books as that was one the few things that Howl could sneakily get.

Howl's self-image and mental health improved and eventually, The Great Knights started interacting with them. The five always looked after them from afar after their reveal, trying to make WL and PK act like real parents. However, the reason why they started interacting with Howl is because of Xero.

I mentioned this in The Knight's backstory along with The Great Knights' backstories, but Xero ended up getting recruited and trained as a Great Knight after stopping traffickers. He had heard about Howl from Markoth and decided to start talking to them. The Great Knight saw how interactions positively affected the vessel, and soon started interacting with them.

Howl and Markoth continued to hang out and started to get attached to each other. Markoth liked the wonder, curiosity, and kindness that Howl seemed to embody. While Howl liked the adventurous, patient, and understanding nature he had.

Both started catching feelings for each other. Markoth however pushed these feelings aside as he still held guilt for being a willing accomplice to seal them away. He knew what would have happened to their body, he buried enough infected corpses. Besides, why would Howl even like him?

Howl wasn't quite aware of what feelings they held for Markoth, but others around them could tell how much Markoth meant to them. Some of the knights became worried that if Wl or PK found out, then they might just try and shut off Howl from the rest of the world and try and continue to mold them to their liking.

At some point despite the infection, a festival was happening in Dirtmouth. Markoth decided to invite them and the two of them went to the festival with no issue. PK did give his permission and the knights convinced him to let them go as the infection lessened for a bit, and Howl could defend themselves.

The two went out and just had a joyful time. There was no stress and it was the most fun they had in a while. Fireworks were happening later in the night and the two of them went to a semi-secluded section to watch the fireworks.

While alone, both parties made comments that were more friendly than normal, more romantic comments. The area they was very dark, so both of them couldn't see each other. So when Howl moved their shell to Markoth, they accidentally placed their mouth on his.

They were both in shock. Embarrassment corsed through their body and what was even more embarrassing was that they weren't pulling away. They were both still until Markoth pressed lips a bit more, and soon enough they both reciprocated the affection.

Once they stopped Markoth immediately apologized, saying he shouldn't have done that. However, Howl stopped him, realizing what their feelings were.

They both agreed to give out this relationship a secret as if it gets out, it will be bad for both of them. The bugs who knew they were in a relationship was The Seer, because she supported the relationship and would have found out one way or another, and the two of the Great Knights, Ze'mer and Hegemol since they know how to hide a relationship as they both date political figures.

To most of the bugs, they were still friends, while to a few others they were testing out their relationship, while to both of them just fell harder for each other.

They dated for a few months, secretly writing each other notes and going on secret dates with the help of the two knights who made sure that WL or PK wouldn't try to look for them when they were out.

However, one of these letters was misplaced and somehow was placed on PK's desk. Thinking it was from some of the retainers, WL and PK opened up and they were immediately angry and requested to 'speak' with Howl.

PK and WL's lecture ended up being the both of them berating Howl for courting Markoth. PK is angry since Markoth is a moth and directly related to the Radience while WL classism starts showing up and tries to get them a suitable bug for them. The Knights came in and calmed the situation.

PK ended up banning Markoth from the Palace for a short time before realizing that he is still needed to give information on the Radience. But his time at the Palace was severely limited, only being there to give information and get out.

But something happened that caused PK and WL's demeanor to change as it was revealed that The Seer ended up adopting a child, unknowingly adopting a vessel instead.

I already mentioned Ghost's backstory earlier, and the general summary is that Xero saved them and got adopted by the Moth family. Pk, desperately trying to get any sort of vessel living in his house is trying to get Ghost to live in the Palace, with none of the parties budging.

Howls and Markoth's relationship slightly changes as he almost sees Ghost as a little sibling that was frozen as a child till now and he has been dating their twin. However, Ghost didn't mind their relationship as they saw how happy it made both of them.

So this is how the first part of their relationship went. PK and WL were not big fans at all while some others saw how beneficial the two are for each other.

Ómar sighed softly. "You must not be so impatient, my love." 

"You are monstrously wicked, Amillo!" Y/n howled in frustration after having been dragged back from the precipice a second time. "And what if someone comes upon us like this?"

Ómar smiled broadly and made himself more comfortable against the tree. The movement was all that was needed to push him even deeper inside of her. Y/n moaned with pleasure and splayed her hands over his chest in an attempt to stop herself from collapsing on top of him.

"No one will," he replied, his eyes full of wicked humor. “For they are all far too occupied with eating and drinking to even care about anything or anyone else."

"Oh? No one will think to question your absence?" Y/n refused to believe it. Ómar was a most gifted singer. His presence was sought for every festival and feast. The knowledge that no one would search for him in the hopes of pressing him to sing again astounded her.

"They will not, my love. Most were deep in their cups when we left.” Ómar heard the laughter and the ribald jests. No one would come their way; he was certain of it. “And they all know how I long to sing while bathing in the radiance of Silpion. I must, however, confess, sweet lady, I find myself yearning for a different kind of song right now."

His hand crept beneath her skirts. It moved smoothly up her thigh, going higher and higher, and then-

"There you are." Deft fingers glided over soft folds and their apex again and again, unleashing a flood of fiery sensations that nearly consumed not only his lady, but him as well. "Oh yes, my love. Sing for me. Sing."

Y/n buried her face in the thick, velvety hood of his mantel, fearful her cries would be heard. It was not what Ómar desired. He teased and urged and tempted her into letting go of her fears and crying out for him. And he found himself being rewarded richly for his efforts. Y/n twined her arms around his shoulders, her body like a bow string pulled taut. She was close. He felt it when fresh arousal poured down his cock. With a smug grin, he ceased and drew away. Y/n growled, then grew sullen after being denied once again. 

"Oh, if you could only see how you look!" Ómar laughed. The sweet, lilting sound of it merged gloriously with the singing of birds in nearby trees. "Oh, please do forgive me for this, my love, and let me make amends."

"How?"

"Like this." He pressed y/n closer and knelt upon the grass. Y/n gasped when he thrust for the first time. "And I give you my word; there will be no more denying."

My Favourite Game

A game where you play as a canonically non-gendered character with the appearance of a child, and descend into a despaired and dying underground kingdom. Where the queen has isolated herself because of the radical, deadly actions her husband had taken in an attempt to save the kingdom, and no-one has seen her for years, and when you meet her, she calls you her child.  Where you have a special power because of the mysterious substance you contain, which can be dangerous to others, but allows you to save the game. Where the ghosts of people with a similar nature to yours help you win one of the main final battles. Where multiple royal children die sacrificing themselves trying to save the kingdom, and fail. Where one of the royal children, though you don’t know it at the time, tells you the actions you can take to get a better ending, you go into the darkest and most disturbing section of the game, and then you have to fight them again. Where you can get a vastly different ending depending on the actions you take. Where the lore can be deduced from the dialogue with various of the kingdom’s inhabitants, shopkeepers, and from the ancient tablets and other enviromental clues. Where basically no characters are morally pure, even the main antagonist. Where the traditional symbols of good and evil are reversed or twisted. Where sound design and music is related to the lore. Where you feel bad fighting most of your enemies.

Monomon is God, Change my Mind

I think... there’s a distinct possibility that Monomon was on track to ascend to godhood. Just... bare with me here.

What is godhood in hollow knight? From what I can tell it’s made up of three things; territory, domain, and worship. Gods without any one of these three seem to diminish in power in one way or another.

The Radiance, clinging to worship and territory through the infection, through still powerful, isn’t in top form, as evidence from her godhome fight. 

Unn, tucked away in her (debatably) flourishing territory, but her children a slave to infection. She doesn’t seem to do anything but sleep. Though she still has more power than the white lady, as her children can still hear her if they get close enough.

The White Lady, bound by her own will, isolated in gardens she technically shares with Unn but is not considered a friend by (as by lore tablet). She has no worship- all she has is her domain. Is it any wounder that she can only do what she does for the knight in the game?

The Pale King, dead as a doorknob. After all, who worships him in this corpse of a kingdom? Who really remembers him besides his offspring? Though large, his territory is no longer his, as the territory of other gods encroach upon what once was.

The Nightmare Heart and the Grimm troupe are the only (debatably) stable godhood in the game. As it’s its own territory and worship wrapped up in a (heh) grimm package. Through the ritual requires help from outside, what god doesn’t?

So what does Monomon have to do with this? Well, I believe that Monomon has all three of what gods seem to require. Territory, domain, and worship.

What? you may ask, That doesn’t make sense, if she was a god wouldn’t we know it? Au contraire, my good fellow, that's why I think she was only on the edge of ascending! Just look at her territory!

The Fog Canyon is a bit of an anomaly in Hallownest. If one looks at the territory of other living gods, you’ll notice that the areas encroach on the territory of the godless or weaker gods. Greenpath into Crossroads, Queens Gardens into Deepnest, and The Abyss into the Ancient Basin. Fog Canyon? Fog Canyon, an assumably godless domain, is encroaching on its neighbors instead of the other way around.

I can only assume godly influence, a.k.a Monomon, and well, I feel like a fledgling god would have more power than dying ones.

So if Monomon is a god, what is her domain?

Well, the gods of Hallownest all seem to dual wield domains, The radience with dream and light, Unn with dream and growth, The Pale King with light and mind, and Grimm with nightmares and (probably) flames. The only odd one out is the White Lady. Growth, obviously, but I can’t seem to settle on a second one for her. The best I can come up with is reproduction, and well... Her whole bondage situation is because she wants to keep herself from ‘spread her seed’.

I believe Monomon’s domains are learning and electricity. The learning one is kinda self-explanatory what with the archive and all. So, where do I get electricity from? Uumuu and the electricity theme the fog canyon has going on, mostly.

What about worship? Well... Quirrel has a very similar devotion to Monomon as Lurien has to the pale king (though i know a lot of y’all see that as romantic, and hey, who says it can’t be both. personally i don’t abide by it). We don’t really know what Hallownest was like before the infection, so it could be very likely that there were more people like Quirrel in the Archive.

Thus, fledgling god. Of course, in the event’s of the game it doesn’t matter if she was on track to become a higher being, as well. You know.

Aaaa I love the newest chapter! I wasn't expecting how Ghost handled Midwife - and I love how as soon as she realized that the shades were Children how she approached them in a much gentler manner, they responded to the kindness so very few ever gave them in life

I also like how Herrah was slightly less incandescently furious because she is also a ruler of a people and understands the drive to protect one's people, even at heavy cost, tho I doubt Herrah would yeet a huge bumber of babies into the void on the chance that the radience could be contained by one of them.

And how worried Ghost was that they would be rejected by their sinlings for being so scary! The absolutely necessary stop for cuddles and reassurance that yes they are loved and they did good to waylay the adults from grabbing them, especially as they are so, so close to reaching their goal!

Speaking of said goal... I can only imagine the radience and the siblings' responses to one another ... is not going to go well. Also the seer prob going just as feral as radi bc she is trying to protect her goddess

Oh I ABSOLUTELY think he was a coward, in plenty of ways. But, he definitely did try everything he could to take down the radience and get rid of the infection, that’s what the whole plan with the vessels was. But when it failed and everything went south it seems like he just left. The reasons for doing so, though, we don’t know. And I guess that’s kinda what also makes PK an interesting character, we don’t know what he did or what he was thinking and we never truly will, but we do know he FUCKED up BAD. Whether him escaping to the dream realm was for him to just get outta dodge and save himself, or a desperate last attempt to confront the radience in her own realm, we don’t really know. But him leaving like that, without warning or tell of where he was going was still a dick move. I DO want to think that he WAS devoted to his kingdom though. Everything he ever did was to preserve that kingdom. He shed his big god-like worm body so he could walk among his people, he sacrificed his children (not saying this as a good thing it’s fucked up as all hell but he did this fucked up thing specifically so he could prolong HIS kingdom), everything he ever did, it seemed it was for the sake of this kingdom that HE made, it was HIS and he wasn’t gonna let this moth lady take it from him without a fight. And because of that I don’t think he never cared about his kingdom or his subjects. If anything I think he KNEW his kingdom was doomed (it’s mentioned somewhere that he had foresight) but he continued on with the Trap The Moth Lady in my Kid’s Brain plan because he just couldn’t accept that his mistakes that he made while building this kingdom were coming back around to bite him.

Hollow Knight & My Hero Academia crossover idea

Note: I’m mostly gonna wind up plain rambling & get off-topic, plus all I’ve read of BNHA is from fanfics & the fandom wiki, I’ve never watched/read official sources, so disclaimer on that. 

Hear me out, the Radiance’s fluff is a similar color to Himiko’s hair & I mistoke Toga’s eye color for orange when they’re actually yellow according to the wiki, but the hair part still holds true. If we do some cannon divergence, maybe change up Himiko’s quirk into being able to turn into a moth, a moth goddess, or maybe the Radiance just winds up infecting Himiko, unless you wanna use the Infected Radience theory, in that case, whoever’s using the Radiance as a puppet infects her & she gets it willingly or something like that.

Wait, Hollow Knight, but w/ quirks, that makes things so much more interesting. Getting back on topic, however, may be the Radiance is actually a sibling of Toga & they had the Moth Goddess quirk, wind-ups, perhaps even loses their memory, in what is now Hallownest, the other higher beings: Pale King, White Lady, Nightmare King Grimm &/or Nightmare Heart, Unn, God of Thunder & God of Rain (what if we threw Godseeker in there?), Wyrms, Lord of Shades & The Abyss Creature were all just humans w/ shapeshifting/mutant quirks that maybe even forgot they were humans & forgot how to turn back. Imagine the mental whiplash when even one Higher Being finds out how to become human again & word gets out. A Higher Being has a form that is some pale pink to dark brown squishy being. Imagine if they remembered their memories w/ the human world & some of them were friends! PK & Radiance were the closest besties & now their enemies.

Now, are we doing the Big Bugs, Bug Tank, or the Human Sized AU? I’ll provide an idea or more for all 3!

Bug Tank AU: That GIANT squishy thing a Higher Being turned into! The Abyss creature is the first one to regain their memories & the forgetting mist doesn’t affect humans for some reason, it’s too low. They’re benevolent & worried for Hallownest & it’s neighbors they do the most logical thing. Put them in a giant tank & care for them. They’ll protect them with their life, & the insanity of the other Higher Beings having to adjust to this.

In a nutshell (if we make the Godseeker’s previous gods alive), like at least 9 people are living in this house maybe they have to have a schedule of ‘who gets to be human when,’ as they decided to live in a single house, & only some people can be in public. The villain & hero chaos doesn’t help, it’s hard enough hiding Hallownest in the usual day.

The shock of everyone else, their lives were a lie! What if the entirety, of Hallownest’s ancestry, was humans that could turn into bugs & they could become humans, or half-human, half-whatever species they are people, maybe their size is a balance between their the small bug & large human height? Quirked Hollow Knight AU!

Human Sized AU: Mosscreeps & other adorable bugs get domesticated, heck though, what would they think of their smaller unintelligent counterparts? Anyways, let’s focus on the “Radiance was sealed & it worked for some time” era. The cultural whiplash (that should have already been brought up), & the technology gap here. There’s also a possibility there’s a gap between how long the humans & bugs have been sapient for. Not to mention the shock of all the laws & the whole quirk stuff, & there are so many meetings between official leaders & ambassadors. I’m not sure if the maggots were slaves, but if slavery was a thing & the fact especially the upper class will have to think “I’ll have to pay everyone I want to work for me”. The possible tension between the two! They hear the story of the first quirk & they may be torn between “Did the Pale King/the Radiance/some other light Higher being create quirks?” The language gap, how could I forget that? Assuming the more people that believe in you the more power you get as a higher being, humans w/ permission explore this alien world & find out about almost every Higher Being we know about, & the population is like in the billions, everyone’s power level, skyrockets, whomst has awakened the ancient one skyrocketing. Hallownest’s reaction to nukes . . .

(I just made a whole branch AU) I wanna focus on the Mantis Lords tho, assuming the brother was yet to betray his tribe, what if they pushed the disabled to be as equally strong as the abled? What if they looked down on most of humanity for regressing practically just because they by chance got powers that could be greater than what could be done w/ soul by chance? What if word got out of their opinions and the quirkless flock to becoming mantis tribe citizens because they have a chance at being equal not because of their birth state, but because they worked for such a state? The Mantis Tribe population becomes large as heck since 20% of the human population is almost 1,600,000,000 likely, maybe not the whole percent but a large majority. The economy on a positive note maybe becomes Mt. Everest on the charts for both groups & it doesn’t crash hard.

The introduction of Void & Soul to humans may be a bad thing tho, what the difference between human souls & bugs? Does the murder rate especially towards bugs goes up, does a war break out? Multiple? Does the relationship between bugs & humans stick on the edge of breaking? Does Hallownest split into several groups & countries with different opinions thinking humans should be wiped out, they should be lower than them, they should join them? Do even the maggots join the “I don’t feel like praising the Pale King anymore” squad since humans without much direct contact with gods have gone so far they think “We don’t need gods, we need masks.” The Mask Maker now has a business & several apprentices making masks. This branch AU has the most opportunities for drama, that’s for a fact. The whole opinions split large populations happen w/ the humans too. Criminals may see Hallownest as an easy target for a mass steal meaning security & law enforcement will have to be increased and improved, they’re given aid but this also to an extent makes them dependent on humans.

What if the Kingsoul’s discovered & it’s mass-produced, killing’s not necessary guys! You can stop now! What if the same happens to the Dreamnail? 

The Howling Cliffs is certainly an obstacle here tho too, whether you go the easy or complicated route, that’s up for debate, does being outside of Hallownest effect Higher Beings, do Higher Beings also naturally have sapience & language as well?

Human Ancestry AU part tho, bugs went from having their exoskeleton outside, to having them inside, every bug needs clothes now (Editing this for a second time I thought that on the spot, why would they all have to wear them now?), not to mention, the different foods they’ll sometimes be able to consume & sometimes not- CORDYCEPS! It messes up non-sapient bugs but has medical properties & is edible to humans if it can affect the big bugs, perhaps a quirk made, scientific &/or magical vaccine will have to be made, maybe a quirk w/ time reversing effects are used to cure a victim. Some bugs try to even make their human form permanent if we’re in the “Pure Human form” side of the AU. If not, more debate between the two groups~! Heck, a cure’s technically impossible meaning bugs would have to wait for a vaccine to be made & it may likely take a really long time since vaccines for bugs are likely rarely be focussed on, & pray they go their life never contracting it. We can also just go the “the sapient bugs are unaffected enough/immune“ route to make things easier or ignore Cordyceps altogether. Would bugs have a coffee equivalent or could take just some coffee before it’s too much, pure human sub-branch tho, heck yeah. Does the whole food & drink stuff means bugs have to wait till they fully digest food then they’re safe to shift to the other form? Is soul needed to shift? Does the body know when it’s safe to shift after eating/drinking food deadly to the other form? 

Anyways, this AU also means bugs have to learn their bug language & human language in human tongue. Some bugs like the Mantis Tribe will stick as a bug as much as possible as an exoskeleton is more appropriate with a culture like their’s but even the Mantis Lords seem to have just a single claw, the equivalent to a single finger, they definitely shift when in need of hands. People like Quirrel & Monomon have 4 fingers per hand/many limbs to get the job done, so shifting is much less likely for people like them.

If the Higher Beings has quirks humans, chances are there were missing searches for them, they remember everything & they go “oh.” Even w/ any AU if this is the case, even more, legal stuff happens. The family reunions could be every awkward.

Big Bugs AU: Mt. Lady would quickly be considered a candidate for ambassador thanks to her quirk, however, that’d be shot down. Likely she’d speak the actual ambassador’s mind if they decided to have meetings. Humans may also help with technological progression though the main issue comes with materials available on Earth, time to mine the other planets & go to other universes.

That’s enough of those three AUs & branch AUs I feel like thinking about, however, the Human Ancestory AU+Human Shapeshifting Higher Beings can both individually be their own separate AUs w/o the whole BNHA Crossover stuff. 

It’s amazing how much came from me mistaking Himiko’s eye color. This is why you twist even the tiniest detail for no reason or remember what you made a mistake about in a show/game etc. & think, “what if that was actually the case?” Edit: Frick, mistoke Mosscreep for Mosskin
