nuts reading in jp 12 - trimax ch 1 and 2 time HBRBRHBRHBRHBR

last we left off, vash meets wolfwood and i smashed out a bunch of nonsense saying how wolfwood brazenly climbed over one of the walls vash has.

i think more of this happened in trimax ch 1 and 2. there's something going on with the framing here.

being buck naked

so previously in post #10 ive mentioned how meryl and milly stumbling into a half naked vash is him showing them the most open and vulnerable self he has. in trimax ch 1 this happens again

except he isnt half naked this time, hes buck naked and just took some bullets right in front of wolfwood and his ruined salad grub.

theres also this scene where vash talks pretty openly about how he feels about the fifth moon incident. hes scared, and he declares it to wolfwood. buuuut, check out the bubbles ive highlighted here:

i think this might be a problem stemming from DarkHorse's work bc in the JP its actually like this:

Wolfwood says "So ya chose to retire." (more directly: so ya chose to live on the down-low?) the Tell here being the kansai dialect in the bubble.

i dont like nitpicking over translation mistakes. id probably slip up here and there if i did trigun too bc the japanese level in here is higher than what Shounen Jump has. also no hiragana aid in trimax cry

this then implies wolfwood has sussed out vash pretty well enough for vash to continue spilling more information. i suspect if wolfwood didn't, the conversation miiight have ended right there.

these panels, man. wolfwood is looking with half of his expression covered. meanwhile, vash doesnt meet him and just wants to hide. maaaybe run? idk. interpretations ahoy.

thats a fun dynamic. on another note

that vash in trimax ch 1-2 seems to be using Ore with wolfwood throughout their interaction. i suppose its a continuation of how vash seems to have some trust towards wolfwood, as he did watch him give whats little of his money left towards kids previously.

but if im understanding how nightow is now framing this whole concept correctly, the whole pronoun usage here is to drive home how multi-faceted vash is. that is to say, all of these parts are him, and we as the viewer see it all laid pretty bare.

the characters meanwhile do not, and certainly not wolfwood... yet. though if you wanna interpret the nakedness it might be that the TriGang have seen the rawest part of what drives Vash.

aside, boku is still around. internally when hes reflecting and feeling unsure, Boku is used in this scene:

they talk sometimes on phone and talk as if they're fighting, so the gom is a little confused on who akashis angry at all the time

i haven't talked abt my d4 headcanons for a while so it's time to change that! (this is random. like. very random there are no specifics.) also it's fine if u dont headcanon anything i headcanon of course lol, im not saying everyone should headcanon the ones i have.

(i made it long. i ramble and go off rails for a bit. apologies. cutting it.)

so. dalia half filo headcanon time!!!

dalia's mother is filipino while her father is japanese. she has one uncle and one aunt who r also filo, with dalia's mother being the youngest. her mother and siblings were born and raised in pampanga, her grandmother is from ilocos, (im not sure on ilocos norte or ilocos sur so im just saying ilocos.) and one of her great-grandparents was from around visayas or mindanao (they have no idea bc dalia's mother moved to japan at a young age bc of her grandfather needing a better job and general work environment. dalia's uncle and aunt moved back to the philippines when they were older but dalia's mother stayed in japan bc they're more connected to the philippines than her but they still keep contact.

the way they keep contact is by giving gifts. a lot of gifts. and also phone calls. when dalia and her brother (i havent made up a name for him but i will soon) were born, their gift giving doubled. they gifted them a few stuff from the philippines like a maria clara gown (that was originally from dalia's grandmother), a barong (that was originally dalia's uncle's), and a few vhs tapes and videos of their mother dancing tinikling, carinosa, and other filipino folk dances.

dalia's mother met her father and fell in love. since her husband is a chef, her siblings sent many many recipes of food their mother made when they were younger. dalia's mother also made sure that they knew their filipino food so she and her husband made sure they knew it as well.

dalia fell in love w dancing bc of her mother's old videos of her dancing. her mother let her learn those dances she knew as a child because it was like she was back at the philippines again. (and also bc she wants dalia to know that side of herself more) dalia's brother also got interested in cooking bc of their father so he started following that path.

bc of this, dalia and her brother know three languages: japanese, tagalog and english. they know japanese and tagalog more compared to english though. reason for knowing english is because in the philippines, they (in my experience, anyway) only teach japanese and other languages in international or expensive schools and dalia's mother and siblings would not be able to go to that type of school. but! in public schools or cheaper schools (depending on how u see it idk) they mostly teach u english and tagalog together. so her mother would know english and tagalog then soon needed to learn japanese.

so. um. enough abt dalia!!! onto my next d4 headcanon ramble!!!!!

trans girl shinobu. i havent thought of this much like i did w dalia but it still means a lot to me even as a transguy. (still not used to saying that lol) it's gonna be explained when i ramble. im a closeted transguy. so why would i headcanon shinobu, someone i draw in mostly masc clothes, transfem instead of transmasc? bc to me it's like. "hey! look! this transgirl can wear masc clothes and is still a woman, so a transguy wearing fem clothes is still a man!" so it comforts me.

also bc why not? nothing is stopping me, people in this fandom love hearing me talk abt my headcanons -- hopefully -- and they arent going to argue and make long ass thread on me or my art and why it's wrong.

anyway, enough abt myself, onto the "lore" thing or whatever to call this. shinobu is not on hrt yet, but was on puberty blockers when she was in middle school. (im not sure on what age ur allowed hrt in japan so...) and did voice training. her family and peaky pkey are the only ones who knows she's trans and she's VERY private abt her transness. when kyoko asked her abt voice training when she didn't know her much she got very scared and told her she didn't know. she wears hoodies bc it hides the fact she's flat chested. she doesnt wear tight shirts either, only when she's home. dennojo and all her relatives support her greatly and make sure she's comfortable w herself as much as possible.

kyoko, esora and yuka were confused at first why shinobu would just. not dress up w them and stuff but after she told them why, they simply smiled and said it was fine. the three of them make sure shinobu is comfortable whenever she's changing in gym and also make sure no one is looking at her. they do a little wall thing. ough theyre just. very supported of her ok?

that's all i got for shinobu. if i continued it would be super long so im stopping and going to continue ramble on abt something else.

merm4id has heart accesories that are meant to match w each other. idc what u say. rika has a heart-shaped sunglasses, marika has a bracelet w heart beads, dalia has heart earrings and saori has a heart pendant she can open that has the pictures of rika, marika and dalia. they all love each other so much <3

touched on this in my bday fic, but aoi has two crow plushies named lucifer and hesperus. lucifer is a very light orange-colored crow with dark brown eyes while hesperus is a dark blue one w yellow or orange eyes. she got lucifer first when she was ten and has been with her ever since. he's full of stitches and stuff bc of how old he is. hesperus, on the other hand, is very clean. he doesnt have stitches yet. to her, lucifer was her first friend. he comforted her when she was at her lowest. tsubaki, nagisa and hiiro didnt know she had lucifer until side origin and they love him dearly. then at her birthday, tsubaki gifted hesperus to her.

all of them like to think theyre rondo's mascot even tho theyre the only ones who know abt them. hiiro likes making little outfits for them and nagisa likes making accesories. also nagisa jokes a lot abt how hesperus and lucifer are like tsubaki and aoi's sons, which tsubaki does not (she secretly does) like and aoi just chuckles and agrees. tsubaki is especially attached to hesperus bc she bought the little guy. that's her little thing. aoi sends in silly pictures of them in the silly outfits hiiro made for them to the rondo gc. tsubaki treasures them deeply and nagisa likes showing it to shinobu w no context.

noa is a very normal (she isnt) fan of takarazuka revues (bc she has the same voice as junna) and she tries to get towa into it. towa half heartedly watches the plays for noa's sake and she's just kinda happy that noa wants to share something she likes w her. noa rambles A LOT on what some things might mean and represent in the plays and towa tries to add what she thinks whenever noa rambles. she also tries to get ibuki and saki into it and she semi-succeeded, but towa is the one who keeps up w her normalness abt plays. they also talk abt how cute some musumeyaku and otokoyaku are bc of course.

aaaaaand that's all i got. this isnt much headcanons but i think some of the details i put compensate for that lol. hope u enjoyed seeing my headcanons? idk.

JIRO: i’m going to visit the shrine with my siblings! There’s a lot to ask for, like prosperity (for business) and good health… fulfilment ? You can ask for all sorts of things. My friends also invited me, so i’ll be making a lot of new years visits!

SABURO: it's just a regular day. I play board games with my brothers on new year’s.

Yuzuriha fanarts and, of course, cosplays seem to have skyrocketed after the anime's release and while this had a positive effect on the series' popularity, I can't help but think many people are missing out on Yuzuriha's character. Plot (and fan service -_-) aside, looking at her character individually, she's a finely written character. We don't get to see many logical and pragmatic female characters who can hold their own and actually fight without being a burden in Japanese media. And I find her, for lack of a better word, "tough girl" act overall quite satisfying especially when her concealed feelings were revealed and explored towards the end of the manga. This made me want to read her part in the light novel, which I am planning to do soon. Anyway, I was wondering what you think of her and her relationship with the rest of the cast and her relevance to the plot.

General Opinion on Yuzuriha;

And you explained really well. She is fine character but she is also used as fan service and comic relief a lot which is a shame so anyway, here's my general opinion on her and her relationships.

She is fine character;

She is smart. She cooparates with others in a situtions that she cant survive on her own. This also means a lot of interesting interactions between different characters. She fight well and she is independent. We dont have much female characters, especially good ones so its nice that she is in the story as good character. She is pretty. She gives fan services but at least, she still has character. She is femme fatale, a pretty woman who seduces men for her own gain and drives them to dangerous situtions. Her fighting style also fits this side of her. She is funny so at least she gives comic relief to the series. Most characters are too serious so sometimes, it's fun to have a character who is chill.

As personality, she seems to similar to Toma at first sight. They both are mysterious, kinda sadistic, they always give a smile and pretend to be trustworthy only to usually betray for their own gains and they both has earth element etc but i think she is a lot similar to Chobei in a way she is independent, she is naughty girl who wants to do whathever she wants. She is pleasure person. She doesnt care about shame to survive. She lies and she is very social, this part of her is a lot like Chobe. Only difference is Chobei wants to be leader and dominates others while Yuzuriha usually prefers to play safe. She has her own agenda. She is also very realistic or negative like Gabimaru. They both are ninjas, after all.

Though her motivation as villain was explored more because it would make sense why Sagiri is so protective of her and she would actuall have an answer to Isuzu when she said 'think about her victims and their families'. And honestly she has a point.

She is Good Big Sister;

The most interesting part of her for me is that she is actually good sister. She became ninja to gain money for her little sister. She risked her life for her many times and still tried to make her happy. And the reason she wants to live for long time isnt just because for herself. Its most likely a promise she made with her sister. And we only learn this when she is about to die, that story she told before is actually real. Jigokuraku is a story that explore humanity of criminals and Yuzuriha is one of them. She is not just bad guy for the sake of it. Her love for her sister and her motivation also gives depth to her character.

I think this wasnt mentioned enough because Chobe usually overshadow her as big brother but i think its different. I am just gonna say it. Chobei is crazy. His love with for Toma is crazy. Thats just him and Toma. Yuzuriha is good, great big sister actually and this should be talked more.

I am mentioning this because usually 'brocon/siscon' siblings love shine more but their love or obsessions is too much sometimes. So its sad to to see they overshadow just your usual loving big sister/brother. And thats very unfair.

Fake Death Scene;

I think this really ruined her character and made it hard to take her seriously after that fake death scene. She has clearly 'last moments' scene which is perfect way to end her character but she suddenly comes out of nowhere. And not only her survival doesnt make sense, and also ruined the death scene but also, her staying in story did nothing for the plot. Whether that scene shouldnt have portrayed as death or she shouldve stayed death.

(Similar thing happenned with Chobe but it was obvious that he survived with the way Toma hold him nad problem isnt him surviving at that scene but it show it happens and the whole baby thing is ridicilous.)

At least, this couldve been good chance to explore Yuzuriha's humanity tooo, but her backstory wasnt explored the way Gabi and Chobei's story was. Not just Yuzuriha, Toma and many other characters too, wasnt explored much. Though, i think thats one of the main issues with Jigokuraku. (Another issue is it shouldve been more 'dont tell, show' thing). We didnt explore much even though there were so many different characters, different interactions, there wasnt much development. For example, it would be interesting plot if some point she betrayed the main group but eventually felt regret and came back to them maybe.

Sagiri and Yuzuriha;

I think its fine ship but its full yuri fan service. My biggest issue with this is Yuzuriha suddenly flirt iwth Sagiri out of nowhere and at some point, Sagiri is okay? with it, also out of nowhere. If only we could explore why they suddenly attract towards each others (other than 'oh hot woman'). Like, why Yuzuriha suddenly likes her out of all people? Gabimaru also has idea of justice, just like Sagiri. She also has a fan, Senta who seems to admire her personality. And same with Sagiri too. She was so stubborn with her rules even against someone like Gabimaru who is victim but then she sayd 'you are not a villain' to Yuzuriha even though she doesnt know anything about her story.

Though logically you can guess Yuzuriha (also just like Toma) likes people who would do anything for her and protects her. There is a soft side to her. My only issue is that there is no development and their interaction seems out of nowhere. And also Sagiri always think about Gabimaru more than anything so its weird. But otherwise, i like fanarts. Their personality fits each others. Serious innocent girl x Chill naughty girl. Its very fun idea, but in canon story, i dont think its well explored.

Her Other Interactions;

I feel like her love for Sagiri overshadow her other interactions. She was like a big sister to Nurugai and Mei. She was good ally to Gabimaru after some point. She even teased Toma. Senta who is lying to himself btu honest to others and Yuzuriha who is only true to herself but lying to others. He views her as free and admires her but her hiding hearth from anyone isnt a good thing so i wish we explore more of this. Its a shame we didnt get more of it. Anyway she clearly likes them too.

Okay I'm back, I've pondered this (simmering in my mental soup for months) and I've come away with some additions. I particularly really like the idea that vulcan structured their society around dealing with autism, so that many of the characteristics for a human with autism don't appear in vulcans. With the flip side being human neurotypical behaviors are considered disabling in their society.

sorry im posting a lot about race stuff today i wasnt expecting it to be a topic on my dash but i actually have been thinking about it a bit recently in terms of like, my own experiences with racism. but im kinda weird right, like i usually say that my experiences with racism are pretty like medium/mild because im asian, right asians are like the furthest up on the barrier between white and not white. east asians are just BARELY not white (especially if youre not diaspora, i will find a way to turn this into hating japan [the country not the people] as an asian)

but im in a weird spot because i live in australia, there are a LOT of asians here, because asia is literally right there, im like an 8 hour flight from vietnam which is crazy as someone who grew up disconnected from my culture on the other side of the planet (im pretty sure my grandma got send to one of those assimilation schools when she got shipped to the midwest when she fled to the US after the vietnam war but she doesnt talk about that stuff so idk)

and ive talked about some experiences with racism ive had to other asians here and theyve been like WHAT THE HELL?? because theyve hardly interacted with white people for most of their lives despite growing up in australia which is a white (british) settler colony obviously

ive dealt with a LOT of racism growing up, because i grew up in rural minnesota and wyoming and im mixed race and the white side of my family is a lot bigger and more connected than the asian side (my parents broke up like around when i was born, and my dads pretty non confrontational and avoidant so i never spent a lot of time with him growing up even though thats not what he wanted) so not only am i really really used to being the only POC in like a 10 mile radius im also used to being the only POC in my own family (a lot of racist comments ive gotten have been from my own mother, sister, grandmother, aunts, etc. bc their proximity to me makes them think its okay to treat me that way, they know me so they know i dont have the power to fight back)

and its not like i havent experienced racism in australia, ive experienced plenty and ive only been here for a handful of years, its usually in the same vein as the racism i got from the rural redneck types that im used to except maybe a little bit more tactful

like sometimes i get assumed to be japanese, or that im like a mail order bride, but its not usually "is your vagina sideways" the only time they converge is when people make comments about my people being poor/dirty/primitive, implying that we are basically monkeys or cavemen or that type of thing. yeah turns out if youre not from one of the BROWN asian countries instead of one of the cool/rich ones thats how it goes

im light skinned but ive had weird comments made about me whenever i get a tan, people tell me i look like im from a 3rd world country when i get a shade darker in the summer

anyway the point is im getting distracted by the dumb bullshit ive experienced bc the point was that i feel like lately ive been trying to quantify my experiences with racism to figure out "how bad it is" bc like, even with everything ive just said at least its not violence, and i dont think anyone has even ever said anything to me maliciously its always just been ignorance, and im like, LIKE I SAID IM NOT EVEN FULLY ASIAN tbh if you go by blood/dna/whatever im not even HALF asian im at least 75% white, mostly norwegian (and i like to acknowledge my norwegian heritage too, it informs a lot of that "minnesota culture" i grew up around) i just usually dont pass as white (usually if i do its bc im hanging around white people who are used to what asian people are SUPPOSED to look like, which is evidently not me, but im not sure if i actually pass as white in those settings or just "not asian" people tend to mistake me for latino a lot [so mestizo probably])

i do suspect that my poc-ness has affected my ability to get a job, more often when i was living in rural areas people tended to give me the stink eye a lot when they saw me, and theyd act kind of grossed out when i applied for jobs, i have a white name so people seem to have an assumption shattered when they meet me after seeing my name, its hard to confirm if thats real or not though. all my jobs ive ever gotten have been through nepotism :thumbsup: (theyve been really shitty horribly paying jobs though)

So today I opened up the canto dub of CATWS because I wanted to double check the dub for a fanvid (they dubbed Steve’s line of if you’re going to a fight you need to have a suit into “I promised him I’m never leaving him behind” and I was like NO WAY). Anyway bad news that was not the offical dub, but the end of the line quote is still super gay in both dialects of Chinese.

I seriously think the English version is softened by the addition of “the line”. I’m with you to the end of the line — the front line? The train line? The marching line? And maybe in context of them both joining the army, that seems to make it lean more towards bromantic than romantic. That ambiguity doesn’t carry through to the Chinese (or Japanese) translations.

Cantonese: (text) Because I’m with you until the end. (Dub) Because I’ll walk with you until [indefinitely]. (*) There’s slight variation between the two because the spoken dialect of canto doesn’t convert well to written.

Mandarin: Because I’ll walk together with you until the very end.

(*) Both Canto and Mando adds the word “陪” which is a more proactive word than “I’m with you”. I dunno if that’s my weaboo going off but firstly as we said the Japanese tend not to use pronouns if they can avoid it, they’d rather refer to someone by name directly (even while they’re talking to them). But the translators decided to use “you”, and not only that, they chose “kimi” (okay I know there is a dearth of choices but still!) which is a word of endearment. Basically you use it to refer to juniors you’re very close to, your family (in your generation or younger) and your boyfriend/girlfriend 🙈 The term comes with a slight patronising sense which is why you’d never use it for people who have seniority over you.

I’m going to use this summary because it captures what I’m trying to get at.

Another way to look at this is assuming that the "you" you're talking about is some cute, sweet, frail creature of sorts. Ok, that's a bit extreme. But it holds that sort of meaning when you think it can be used by fathering figures (actual fathers, employers, elders) and by intimate friends or childhood friends. It's saying "you are not dangerous" in a way, and that may be perceived as "you are some weak nobody" which is why it can sound condescending or it can sound friendly depending on context. (Source)

since i was explaining it to my friends yesterday so its fresh on the mind. so here we go! first things first i should point out: kiru is actually half Ōbeikei! her dad moved to mainland japan from chichijima as a young adult for college. i should note that while the ogasawara/bonin islands ARE considered japanese territory the majority of people living on the islands, especially Ōbeikei people who arent of japanese descent (in kiru's case her family on that side is primarily descended from the polynesian settlers to chichijima with some overlap to the japanese community there), usually refer to themselves as Ōbeikei or bonin islanders and not japanese. so if asked kiru would say shes half Ōbeikei! because of the bonin islands' tumultuous history, particularly from the start of WWII up until the late 60's, forced assimilation and changing of hands from japan to america [and then back again] meant that a lot of the Ōbeikei people living on the islands had both a japanese name and a western name, and the same is the case for the nikuya family! their surname was originally "butcher", but when japan enacted more forced assimilation on the island via name change in the 40s, any families that weren't already using japanese names had to pick one. as such they chose "nikuya" as it was the direct translation of their current surname and they thought it would make things easier

since kiru's dad was born at the tail end of "navy time" [aka 1946-1968, when only the Ōbeikei people were allowed to live on the island under heavy military restrictions + the japanese people living there were forced to stay in mainland japan], and the reversion back to being part of japan happened when he was very young, he grew up using both "butcher" AND "nikuya" as a surname, and often times wouldn't even really pay attention to which was being used. however, when he moved to mainland japan he stopped using "butcher" as a surname so he would have an easier time adjusting. thus we have kirumi nikuya!

that being said the doylist perspective for her surname being "nikuya" was definitely a butch joke
