I liked the part with the roast pig(s).

Harsh, brutal, and unrelenting. The Homesman presents a traditionally structured western story with some interestingly untraditional characters and perspectives.

Hilary Swank gave an excellent performance, portraying a sympathetic character with a tragic arc. It really took me out of things every time a character referred to her as "plain", because she's anything but. Tommy Lee Jones was pretty great too; Though his character was more typical for the genre, he did a good job conveying a man with inner conflict and depth.

I really did not expect the POV change that took place about two-thirds of the way in, and I definitely have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, the last third of the movie worked well and contained some of the best scenes in the movie, but it also significantly reduced the focus on the hardships of frontier women that had made the story compelling in the first place. 

The Marco Beltrami score was pretty good; Subdued and sparing used, but very well fit to the tone of the material. Likewise, the cinematography conveyed a good sense of wide, oppressive emptiness that suited the script and setting.

Just like with Charlie's Angels (2019), I saw Hailee Steinfeld listed on the letterboxd page then forgot about it, before being surprised when she showed up right at the end to barely be in the movie at all. Not that this has any real relevance to my review, I just thought it was weird it's happened twice now.

A grim but fascinating story. Very good.

Filme de 2014, que vi no cinema e gostei, é um filme triste, bem triste na minha lembrança. Apareceu no Mubi, coloquei na lista pra rever e essa semana me avisaram que vai sair do catálogo. Melhor rever depressa. Tommy Lee Jones se ariscou um pouco na direção e esse ainda é seu último risco.

depois de ver: continua bom e triste. filme sofrido sem salvação no final. boa parte desse sentimento vem da trilha de Marco Beltrami. as atuações de Hilary Swank e Tommy são precisas.

She was named by Time as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2005.

Swank later ventured into producing with the films Amelia (2009), Conviction (2010), You're Not You (2014), and What They Had (2018), in all of which she also starred. Her other notable films include the television film Iron Jawed Angels (2004) and the feature films The Black Dahlia (2006), Freedom Writers (2007), The Resident (2011), The Homesman (2014), Logan Lucky (2017), The Hunt (2020), and Fatale (2020). In 2022, she starred in the television drama series Alaska Daily.
