No, because imagine waiting years to get the answer to the one, most burning question you have about a franchise.
Your curiosity, growing more and more potent with every new installment, every new development.
So many possibilities, so much potential, the sheer capacity for interesting twists and intricate plot points.
All to be crushed, wasted, with the lamest, truly most moronic answer.
Night Furies were one of the most mysterious parts of HTTYD.
Personally, I was brimming with excitement just thinking of all the endless ways the directors could expand upon this species, its history and its culture.
Naturally, we got nothing. Zero. Zip. Nada.
Like, really? You expect me to believe that Grimmel (actually now? bffr, get this discount-Viggo outta here) cleared the entirety of, arguably, the most elusive, most careful, most intelligent, most powerful species of dragon.
(Which, even if rare, we're looking at at least several hundred dragons.)
Because they can't travel long distances (Who are you talking to right now? đ¤¨) and because they can't bear the cold (Girl, be so serious đŽâđ¨).
Ladies, gents, my non-binary friends; I've heard it all. This is it. It was so ridiculous, so disappointing, so ridiculously disappointing I started laughing.
And maybe fans who've only watched the movies don't get the hysteria, but if I'm anything, it's a RoB, DoB, RTTE truther. And damn, those series are laying it on thick, especially RTTE.
You have the Dragon Eye. Places like Vanaheim. New and fascinating discoveries about dragons left and right.
THIS PART:
I was kicking my feet up and down when I saw this.
We could've done so much more with this, but nope. Of course not.
Fuck, I will die mad at this movie.

I'm gonna say it; Hiccup did nothing wrong. We're treating him as the biggest problem of THW when literally his worst crime in is somehow losing his freckles and that's not even something he has control over. Oh and that kind of incredibly stupid plan of literally moving an entire people by going "let's just fly straight until we hit something :) even though I, Hiccup Haddock, somehow don't believe the world is round."
The entire rest of the movie is everyone else around him being horrible and out of character.
Berk is a mess in the beginning of the movie, yes. But it was also just a year ago that his father was horribly murdered in front of him because Draco Bloodyfist-Or-Whatever decided to sent his mind controled best friend after him. Everybody expects Hiccup to be put together and solve all problems immediately and remain a Dragon Rider when he should be buying a therapist a mansion and a yacht with all those billed sessions.
Then there is being told more than once that he's putting Astrid second when he literally isn't. And told he should meet her standard.s
There is all that stuff about how he's been a horrible pet owner to Toothless when he had legitimate and real fears about Toothless not making it out in wild and about the Light Fury turning on him and about him not coming back. (Like... he's a disabled dragon, for Gods' sake??? Toothless will literally NOT make it without human intervention)
He's called out for not embracing change when his name was literally synonymous with change before THW and every bit of change he proposes in the movie is met with backlash unless Astrid, their not-chief, says it's okay.
His mother, who abandoned him for 20 and came home with him after the traumatic loss of his father spends most of the movie not being the mother she promised him to be in the second movie and even advocated for the Riders to be less dependent on dragons when she was with dragons for the entirety of those 20 years.
And then there is all the bullying. Making fun of his voice, telling him- a disabled person- to LOSE THE LIMP, telling him he's not worthy of Astrid the warrior goddess (completely forgetting how Hiccup is both parts warrior and diplomat in at least the previous two movies, let alone the movies and the shows) and these three things are all said by Tuffnut! "Forgets he has a sister in THW" Tuffnut!
And let's not forget Snotlout's "who died and made you chief?!" when Snotlout was literally crying at Stoick's funeral. And then proceeds to hit on the dead man's wife and his best friend's mother while also putting said best friend down!
Like... none of the things said to him in the first movie were as bad as some of the things said in THW.
The entire movie is also basically Hiccup being pulled from one direction to the other.
It's "You're a bad chief because you're not changing anything" yet it's also "how dare you make this change!"
It's "you should step up as chief" yet it's also "we will only listen if Astrid says it's good."
It's "you were literally keeping Toothless captive for 6 years :/" yet it's also "Uuuhhh, time to cut the umbilical cord, don't you think? đ"
It's "you let Toothless go free, what did you expect?" yet also "uh, you let him go???"
It's "you are literally nothing without Toothless, sorry :/" yet it's also "Toothless only showed you what was already inside."
It's "you should put Astrid first for once" yet it's also "I, Hiccup, will literally listen to every single word you, Astrid, says even if it's hurtful."
It's "I, Astrid, will suggest to you, Hiccup, that we go find Toothless in the hidden world" yet it's also "I, Astrid, will blame you, Hiccup, for deciding to go to the Hidden World, making the Light Fury, who you have no control over, to follow us back home"
It's "hey man, can you help me with this dragon tail? :(" yet it's also "I will literally not listen to you when I'm about to break this branch that I and the dragon tail are on."
I mean, my God! I'd sent the dragons away if I had to listen to that for the past year after I watched my father die a gruesome death.
And that's not even the worst part. The worst part is Toothless abandoning Hiccup for the most shallow reason there is; chasing dragon tail that doesn't even want anything to do with him unless he does something that impresses her when he's the king of the dragons.
So yeah, probably an unpopular opinion, but besides one bad plan, Hiccup did nothing wrong besides listen to what all the people around him were saying, no matter how much they contradict themselves.
Really, what he needs is a hug. A Real one. :(
#me ranting about thw? it's more likely than you think!#i find myself thinking what the riders in the rtte-era would've thought if they saw the way hiccup was being treated in thw#because of the âwhere hiccup goes we goâ sentiment and because that's when the riders became a family#thw salt#httyd 3 criticism#httyd movies#httyd 3#how to train your dragon 3#httyd: the hidden world#hiccup haddock

Strap in folks this is gonna be a long one.
So as we know Dean Deblois is the writer of HTTYD2 and 3. As a writer you have a list of rules you should follow. One such rule is âshow donât tell.â
Dean disregarded this rule and we mainly see it with Grimmel and the Night Fury genocide. In the movie he tells us âI hunted every last night fury except yoursâ yet Grimmel has nothing to show for it. No trophies, no night fury hide cloak, not even a claw. The most we get is a few âfactsâ about Night Furies that arenât even true, or canât be proven to be true because weâve only ever seen one Night Fury.
âNight Furies canât survive the cold.â Yet Hiccup tells us (in GOTNF which is canon) that winter in Berk lasts for most of the year.
âNight Furies canât fly long distancesâ Yet Toothlessâ wings are large and wide, which allows him to glide for long periods of time.
âFuries mate for life.â We would never know because we only see one Night Fury in the entire franchise. And if we take a look at other dragons, it seems they only see their mate during mating season.
And why would Grimmel know that if heâs trying to kill off the Night Furies forever? Whatâs the point in knowing their mating habits if thereâs never going to be any Night Furies again? Did he just look at a Fury pair and go âyeup. They mate for life.â
Now another thing about Grimmel is that his hunting method is unreliable. One, he left his bait without any restraints. Imagine if the Light Fury woke up minutes before and just left? Boom! No more bait. What if Toothless wasnât horny and was mad at the Light Fury for trying to kill Hiccup multiple times? Boom. He wouldnât be trying to deal with her and the plan is ruined because the bait isnât appealing to the target. What if Toothless didnât smell her and never showed up?
Lots of plot conveniences. It happens in the entire movie. Dean also had to confirm that yes, Grimmel did kill all the Night Furies in an INTERVIEW because people didnât believe that Grimmel genocide the Night Furies. And Dean only did this because he thinks Toothless is special because heâs the last Night Fury.
Now we could be here forever talking about how stupid grimmel is as a villain and how stupid it is to even entertain the thought that ONE man and his six, drugged dragons were able to commit genocide to a species of intelligent, elusive and fast dragons, but letâs just continue.
Another rule Dean disregarded is having good characterization. Or ANY characterization!
The Light Fury immediately comes to mind. Name one personality trait she has that we actually see in the movie. You canât, can you? Because Dean actively wrote that out. There was a deleted scene of Light Fury and Toothlessâ romantic flight which gave her much more personality, yet Dean wrote it out and gave us the boring one we have now.
Also, can we just talk about how she doesnât have a name? Her name is literally âThe Light Fury.â Which is the same as naming a Golden Retriever Golden Retriever.
I know Hiccup wouldâve named her. Hell, anybody wouldâve named her! But no, Dean decided that she didnât need one because âhow else would she be wildâ?
Dean says this in an interview, âWe intentionally try to keep her [The Light Fury] wild and elusive, to kind of represent something that is pure dragon, that hasn't been tainted by human beings by domestication.â Which just goes to show that Dean doesnât know what domestication is.
(Dean also doesnât know what a subspecies is because if he did, then he would know a Light Fury canât possibly be a Night Fury subspecies because they have too many differences).
1. this means that Dean thinks all of the dragons that have benefited from human companionship (Toothless, Cloudjumper, Meatlug, Stormfly, etc) are tainted.
And 2, there is nothing âdragonâ about the Light Fury. She has small feet (Hiccupâs head is literally bigger than her feet), small claws, a small mouth, her wings are weirdly shaped, sheâs curved, she has no protective scales and her tailfin is in the shape of a heart, which would actually mess up her flight.
Many people have said this is because sheâs semi-aquatic. But this is disproven by the fact that weâve never seen her in the water and the art book.
Hereâs two direct quotes: âWe had to explore how the Light Fury would walk and make her feel like a female.â âWe had to control all the shapes while keeping her both powerful and graceful so she didnât fall too much into the reptilian category.â
The Light Fury is a plot device, a âagent of changeâ in Deanâs words.
Now while weâre on the topic of characterization, letâs talk about our main cast. Weâll start with Toothless.
Toothless is Hiccupâs best friend, who will do anything to protect him no matter the costs. Heâs sassy, intelligent, curious, loyal, protective and playful.
Now take all of this, and throw it in the trash because this isnât the toothless youâre going to see in THW. In THW Toothlessâ playfulness is shot to the max, making him more like a slobbery puppy than the lethal panther he was in HTTYD1.
Toothless isnât protective of Hiccup at all, his intelligence is below hell itself and we donât see a lick of sass. Httyd3 Toothless is physically incapable of looking scary because his face has been deformed to to look blocky and smushed together. He lacks any aerodynamics and we can even see it in his flying. He looks like heâs struggling.
Toothless and Hiccupâs friendship is so watered down in this movie, just for the sake of romance. Thatâs not how it should be. Romance and friendship go hand in hand, one is not more valuable than the other.
Astrid is nothing but Hiccupâs emotional support, yet she also puts him down. âyou gave him [Toothless] his freedom, what were you expecting?â This implies that the dragons are being held captive and Toothless doesnât want to be with Hiccup.
Which he does, as we see in GOTNF. Toothless only left to get Hiccupâs helmet, then he broke the auto-tail. But why would Astrid even say that? Thats so insensitive đ.
The twins are dumbed down (despite proving to actually being intelligent), Snotlout is flirting with a woman whoâs 20 years older than him (and might be his aunt, depending if you see Hiccup and Snotlout as cousins) and Valka outright tells Hiccup that they canât hide away from the world.
Which is true, they canât. Because eventually they will be found. Now remember this, itâll come back later.
Now, when writing a story itâs important to move the plot along in a way that doesnât seemed forced. When I think of this, I think of Trollhunters: tales of Arcadia.
The protagonist (Jim) goes into the villainâs home in order to rescue his friendâs baby brother, yet he gets trapped there. His friends have to get him out of there, which allows the villain to be freed from the Darklands. This happening allows the story to move forward in a way that makes sense and isnât forced.
Now back to HTTYD3. Letâs look at the scene where Toothless and the LF get captured. The Light Fury smells grimmel, she calls to toothless, runs towards Grimmel and gets shot.
Toothless runs over (ignoring Hiccupâs warnings) approaches Grimmel, takes forever loading a plasma blast while sloooowly walking towards Grimmel, allowing the man to shoot him and make him go night-night.
Hiccup runs over, also taking forever. And the next time we see grimmel heâs already tied up two dragons (BY HIMSELF) in these complicated straight jackets. The other dragons come around (finally) ready to attack, yet Grimmel threatens the light fury and tells Toothless to call of the dragons.
âBut isnât Toothless asleep?â I hear you ask, and to that I respond with âno, heâs not. He miraculously woke up in time to call the dragons off, despite the light fury still being knocked out cold.â
The dragons are called off and grimmel leaves on his quad-copter. The dragons follow them, even though Grimmel didnât tell toothless to make them follow.
Do you see how forced this is? Thereâs many more forced plot points, but weâll be here forever talking about it and this post is long enough already.
Next up on the broken rule list, Dean let the antagonist win. Now itâs okay for an antagonist to win, but never in the third act.
Grimmelâs ultimate goal was for dragons to disappear. Dean himself says âhe does not want a world in which dragons roam free.â And what do we see at the end of HTTYD3?
The dragons disappearing into the Hidden World forever. Exactly what Grimmel wanted.
Finally, the last rule Dean broke is having a consistent plot. Now the plot of each movie is a bit different. Httyd1: Hiccup shows Vikings that while dangerous, dragons arenât monsters. And itâs better to work together than working apart.
Httyd2: Dragons are being captured and enslaved, we need to save them and fight for our friends.
Httyd3: toothless needs to get a girlfriend. He HAS to, despite not ever showing to want one, but heâs horny right now so YES, he HAS to.
But the franchise has an overarching narrative about humans and dragons coming together. That no matter what, they will prevail because theyâre working together.
Well in HTTYD3 yes, they prevail. But the dragons leave. Why, you may ask? Because no matter what theyâll always be bad humans so thereâs no point fighting.
Hiccup sends the dragons to an underground glittery cave that doubles as a prison, and six years of friendship is thrown down the drain for a female Toothless met three days prior. Hiccup tells the audience that dragons will hide until humans learn how to get along (despite the many humans that already get along with them).
And thatâs it. The end. No more.
âBut wait!â I hear you ask, âWonât the dragons eventually be found again?â And to that I say, âOh, you remember!â
Because yes, the dragons will eventually be found out again. And because Hiccup gave up on fighting for change, these humans think dragons are dangerous monsters and will undoubtedly enslave/kill them.
We even see this with his own kids! Zephyr thought dragons were monsters and was ready to hurt them in order to âprotect her familyâ. Humans of the future will no doubt act like this as well.
Humans and dragons will never learn to get along if they are never around each other. Change wonât just happen, you have to fight for it. Like the end of slavery, or the Womenâs Rights Movement. Those things didnât just happen, people had to fight for change and they had to keep fighting because if they gave up then nothing would change.
And when the dragons are inevitably found once again, it will be Hiccupâs fault when theyâre either killed or enslaved.

Hiccup was a bad leader in HTTYD 3
I was so disappointed with Hiccup and Toothless' leadership in HTTYD 3 so I decided to post about this separately.
First, Hiccup deserves grace. His father was murdered a year prior and he's still relatively young. However, he's not except from criticism.
Putting dragons before Berk
I think this is a holdover of Hiccup's adventurous spirit from HTTYD 2. Why is Hiccup spending so much time rescuing dragons when he should be focussing on being chief? From HTTYD 2, Stoick made it sound like a demanding, full-time job. How can Hiccup be a decent chief if he immediately rushes off at the first sign of dragon hunters? It's so irresponsible to put his life on the line like this, especially when he has no heirs yet.
Overcrowding Berk with dragons
I have only seen clips from the tv shows. But HTTYD 2 shows us that Hiccup knows a ton of discovered lands. So, why is Hiccup bringing all these dragons to Berk when there are so many nearby lands where they can be housed as well? Hiccup's nonchalance 'We'll find room' was just so infuriating. How is Hiccup so freaking dumb?? Way to take your subjects' complaints seriously Hiccup!
No defense strategy
Hiccup is aware that bringing all these dragons makes Berk a target. So why are there no preparations being made to defend the dragons and Berk? Hiccup has all these dragons so use them damn it! Train them to defend Berk so they earn their keep instead of being freeloading nuisances! Instead of building those colourful abominations in the intro scene, build walls and towers. Build defensive traps. Coordinate with ally tribes. Do something! Which brings me to my next point:
Hiccup in HTTYD 3 is a coward
A bit harsh, I know. But I don't care. Yes, Hiccup was naive in HTTYD 2 and Stoick paid the price. I understand that Hiccup needs to be cautious and pragmatic. But Hiccup's first and only strategy is to run away from the Grimmel threat to some fairy tale land. He doesn't respect that Berkians are willing to fight for their homeland. It's funny how the Berkians don't seem to fight anymore after the first movie. It's like after the dragon queen fight, they decided to leave all the fighting to the youngins and their cool dragon armor :). Why does Berk not have a dragon rider army? Then, Hiccup decides to give up fighting altogether at the end of the movie because it's too hard. Hiccup is fine with settling down on that rock called New Berk and giving up on everything he fought so hard for as a teen. He doesn't consult with Astrid, Gobber, his mom or anyone else before deciding the dragons need to leave. What an inspiration.
I just hate how Hiccup was treated in HTTYD 3. I love this dork so much and it pains me to see how his story ended. I wanted better for Hiccup. From the little I have seen from the tv shows, I can't picture those Hiccups acting like this. My heart aches for Hiccup and Toothless. Oh well, at least New Berk was an upgrade at least :(

Iâve always had super mixed feelings (now evolved into negative feelings) regarding HTTYD The Hidden World ever since it first released, so seeing more people actually talk and speak about the issues of the movie makes me feel better LOL. Like yâall are putting it into words why this movie just felt so off to me. I just wish more of the general population of fans and viewers thought about the movie a little more beyond âvisuals pretty.â

I'm having thoughts about "Httyd: The Hidden World" and how incredibly disappointed I feel about it, and how I hate that.
Specifically, how I hate the fact I can't simply enjoy it. I feel envious every time I see someone praise the movie and show genuine love for it, meanwhile I sit here looking at it with utter disappointment and finding it hard to think it as canon.
And I tried to enjoy it, I really did.
I only watched it much recently, not when it came out, with not much memory of the 2 previous movies, and yet I sat there confused and in utter shock of the plot. I can't just sit here and ignore all the worldbuilding it broke, all the morals they fought for in the previous movies that got completely thrown out of the window. And this isn't even including the series (which I am now also watching bc I never got the chance to finish them), the more episodes I watched, the more the 3rd movie just became worse to me with how many things it just threw away.
But again, without the series, it still just doesn't sit right with me.
And I'm not gonna go on a rant about why, bc I think that deserves to be it's own post, or else this one would be way too long for me to type out coherently, I dont wanna focus on that rn (feel free to ask tho I guess).
I watched it with my dad, who was the one who introduced httyd to me (or well, it was one of the random movies that came out at the time that he had us watch since he knew me and my sis liked animated stuff), and he has no recollection of the older movies, and even HE felt put off by it. It just felt so....empty?
Idk
People can enjoy it, I dont wanna take that away from them, but it just sucks. I hate how this movie is the canon for it, how I'll have to sit here and accept that this is how it ended, (imma ignore the future series thank u very much), that not everyone will agree with me that this movie isn't canon and that we can move past it, which they shouldn't, people deserve to have their own opinions ofc. But that I, out of my own stupid will and stubbornness of not being able to move past it, will just sit here in this deep and dark hole of disappointment and no matter how much I claw my fingers on it's walls I wont ever escape to the top of the light.
There are stuff I genuinely enjoy about this movie tho, how they introduced hiccstrid kids, the cute chemistry between them and the lovely flashbacks between Hiccup and his dad. There were some moments I genuinely luaghed at and still do. But it's all attached to a bigger and broken plotline with such disappointing conclusions (take a sip every time I say disappointing).
And yes, there is the "ignore canon choose fanon" line, in which I do follow alot. But here, for some reason, I have such a hard time doing so :(
So yeah, I hate that I can't enjoy the 3rd movie. I hate that I live in constant disappointment for it and there wont be anything I can do about it bc that's how it is, how it ended, the canon.
I'm not here for an argument tho. If you like the movie, than great! Go enjoy it! I'm not stopping you, I'm not trying to invalidate that and sorry if I did come off that way. I personally just have alot of gripes with it and feel kinda alone about it
Just block and move on if this bothers you, I dont wanna upset anyone with this, just need a let out of my frustrations
#i dont often talk about my deep deep feelings over a hyperfixation#I'm still often embarrassed about it#the only one so far is fnaf but that has became my career at this point /hj#but this has been eating me up ever since i started to go back to httyd#i have so many other thoughts about it#and i might make more rants about it too bc i have THOUGHT and OPINIONS that has been eating me alive#and no one to genuinely talk to about it#so imma just scream into the damn void so i can relief the burden of my overtaking mind#httyd#httyd the hidden world#httyd 3#rant#httyd 3 criticism#cake talks

I get that THW was going for a sobering message of "sometimes you have to let people go" and "some friends can't stay forever", but it was hilariously unsuccessful.
It's still baffling to me, the amount of raving reviews calling it "the perfect ending".
Apart from the wild thematic inconsistencies, and the endless flaws with Hiccup's logic of "oh, yeah, I know that things have never before been this good for dragons, I know that Berk is living proof that even the most stubborn people can change their minds on dragons, I know that dragons thrive on companionship and love their humans, I know that good people exist, I know that I'm the instigator of a huge revolutionary period, butttttt..... because bad humans exist I'll lock away the entirety of the draconic population in a glorified underground cage, in the hopes that one day humans will stop being bad and learn to cooperate with the creatures that they question, or even forget, the existence of a measly decade after their disappearance. Magically.", this message plainly didn't fit.
Not just in a thematic context. I mean that it literally doesn't fit in this situation, and it doesn't fit the characters.
It doesn't even fit reality, because you have to let go of people for reasons. Some friends can't stay forever, for reasons.
Valid ones. Reasons like, you grew apart, you don't have shared interests anymore, they betrayed you in an unforgivable way, they're not good for you, they're not good to you, they died, etc etc.
Had any one of these happened? At any stage? The one thing you could, albeit pointlessly, argue is that they grew apart. That they outgrew each other.
Only that...they didn't? Did I miss something? Because Toothless flying away for, what, a day to spend some time with his love interest, is not outgrowing. Toothless finding romance does not mean that he and Hiccup grew apart.
And this isn't just about the Light Fury. I'm not discussing whether or not she's a good character (she isn't), and I'm not discussing whether or not she deserves Toothless (Ha, you're funny). Even if she were the absolute best, most perfect match for Toothless and a compelling character, it still wouldn't even remotely mean that he and Hiccup grew apart.
In fact, if you grow so far apart from your best friend that you can say goodbye to them forever, just because you found a new partner, then I really don't know what to tell you. (Except that you're probably not a good friend.)
Hiccup realizing that Toothless doesn't make him who he is, and doesn't define him, that he doesn't need Toothless in order to be someone, or even that he doesn't need Toothless at all, doesn't mean that he outgrew him. Not even slightly.
I mean, come on, I don't need the vast majority of people in my life. Arguably, I might not even need any of the people in my life. This doesn't mean I don't want them there.
This doesn't mean that I won't fight for them to stay right here, by my side.
Oh, look, how's that for a change? How about a movie where your friends refuse to leave you? Because that's what I want, and that's what How To Train Your Dragon deserved.
That's what Hiccup, and the rest of the Berkians, deserved. And that's what fit. That's what thematically fit, what fit reality, or at least the httyd reality, and what fit the characters themselves.
This movie treated the dragons as mindless pets, whereas in every other step of the way, they were treated as people.
Toothless isn't a just slobbery puppy.
Toothless is intelligent, curious, kind, understanding, funny, snarky and sarcastic, graceful, elusive, protective, loving, wary, and fucking loyal (plus much more).
I can't think of a character that has demonstrated as much loyalty and protectiveness as this guy.
And yet he was barely any of the aforementioned things in thw. He became unrecognizable.
All the dragons became unrecognizable, for no justifiable reason.
The final message shouldn't have been that your friends sometimes have to leave you, and that you have to let them go.
(The humans left the dragons just as much as the dragons left the humans btw)
It should've been that they'll fight tooth and nail to stay, even when the going gets tough, even when priorities shift, even when you tell them to go.
No matter how passionately you insist that caring for you is rotten work.
It's not to them.

So rumor has it that the Light Fury's design was solely based around the concept of "lady dragon." Apparently, so I've heard, the team behind her design didn't want her to look "too reptilian, like a lot of dragons."
So apparently, the Light Fury wasn't allowed to look like a dragon. She had to look female.

Now these are what Simon Otto took inspiration from to make the Light Fury.
But the Light Fury doesnât share any of these traits other than being white. With a blue belly. To me, itâd make more sense for her to grey with a lighter underbelly with rosettes. She should also have feet that arenât smaller than her eyes.
If she was truly made with axolotls in mind, her ear and side nubs should be bigger and she should have more than one (especially since the nubs kinda act as whiskers. She needs help with sensory).
If she was made with terns in mind, her wings would surely be shaped like them and not this.
Those wings arenât made for flight, theyâre more suited for a water dweller. Especially the tailfin.
We arenât even going to talk about how small her mouth and claws are. Or how round her teeth look (granted, Toothless also has round teeth) or how she has no actual scales (and yet has two glitter hearts on her head). And we know itâs not because of the invisible thing, because Toothless can also go invisible, despite having actual scales.
BUT ANYWAY!
The Light Fury is supposed to be a Night Fury subspecies, right? Well subspecies arenât that different from each other. Think of Darwinâs Finches. The only differences they have is their beaks. But compare these two.
They donât really look that similar.

âNow thatâs a king.â - Astrid Hofferson, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
I swear this whole movie, and the scene where Hiccup and Astrid go in to the hidden world particularly, was designed to denigrate Hiccupâs leadership unnecessarily.
Uwu Special Boi Toothless goes to the hidden world and immediately becomes alpha there.
Yeah right.
He became an alpha over the dragons of Berk (plus some others) by challenging the bad Bewilderbeast in HTTYD 2 and winning. And, sure, we do see some instances where Toothless has something akin to authority with other dragons in RTTE.
Toothless doesnât necessarily have authority over other dragons in HTTYD. Heâs more like that super dangerous mercenary that the evil king really likes than a challenger for the Red Death.
Whoâs to say there wasnât already an alpha within the hidden world.
As for how Hiccup figures into all this. During RTTE we see Toothless gaining some authority alongside, you guessed it, Hiccup himself. Itâs almost like the two alpha thing was contingent on Hiccup and Toothless being a single unit. And the whole plot of HTTYD 2 supports this.
