My dad asked me to look at some older baseball/NFL/marvel trading cards to see if they were worth anything. I organized them by what they were (sports or not sports) and while I didn't know anyone else other than MJ (obvy) we DID have a Larry Bird card and it immediately made me think of you. Now I know who Larry is :3
Haha that's great! Getting people to recognize the Hick from French Lick one person at a time

Last Saturday we drove from our small town to another. Our town has one gas station. I remember when mom asked excitedly if I'd been in the new Casey's. "It's so nice she exclaimed proudly."
Lol the town we drove an hour to get to is a veritable metropolis in comparison, three gas stations maybe, but its pride is vested in its favorite son, known as the hick from French Lick - if you don't know, look it up. He played basketball so they named a street after him.
We went to French Lick to eat German food made by German immigrants who've not yet been in this country for twenty years. As we waited for the hostest to appear, I noticed diplomas proudly displayed. The diplomas were from Purdue, not the famous Hick's alma mater, no matter, I know the recipient's mother and know she's proud of her daughters. I've met the daughters too, since they've worked in the restaurant since they were teenagers. Terrific young persons to inspire pride.
Pride, the first deadly sin, so I've read. While I no longer live in fear a heavenly father will burn me for eternity if I don't surrender to him, according to my indoctrination as a child, I do believe there's good life lessons in the bible among the horrific misogyny, approval of slavery, torture, and rape.
Pride is attainable be anyone and treasured most by those who feel they have the least otherwise. Pride empowers us to think we are better - than someone. White America is desperate to believe it's better.
I continue to read about Jason Aldean, who I first remember because he sang a song about a green tractor. It was catchy. It did well and I'm sure he was proud.
I don't regularly listen to country music so Jason Aldean wasn't on my radar until it was reported he'd recorded a song and video about how big city problems better not visit small towns because he and others like him, in small towns, have guns handed down to them from granddaddies.
The dumbassery of this message is exceeded by its enthusiastic acceptance by a multitude of dumbasses. Dumbasses like most of my family, one of whom just posted she wished she could get a kick stand for her bike so it didn't lean left. Actually, kind of funny but she's not smart enough to think that up.
There's no reason to refute the stupidity of this song and video here because it's unlikely the dumbasses would see it and if they did, they are too committed to their prideful dumbassery to be moved.
Why mention it? I think these dumbasses are likely the end of us.
I do appreciate a pretty church once the dumbass congregants have gone home to brag about harassing immigrants on FB.

My biggest 'born in the wrong era' regret is that I missed out on the Celtics 80's dynasty. Larry Bird may have been one of the weirdest looking dudes ever but The Hick from French Lick could ball.

Isiah Thomas on how Larry Bird and Magic Johnson helped save the NBA
Once, the NBA was very far from being the big deal it is today in terms of capturing the global hearts and minds of sports — never mind the advertising dollars that keep it afloat. Then a Hick From French Lick teamed with a Magic man from Michigan to save it. The story of how Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird and lifelong friend and rival Earvin “Magic” Johnson managed to launch interest in the…

Larry Bird praised Bill Walton’s passing on his trade to the Boston Celtics
Hall of Fame Boston Celtics forward Larry Bird made a name for himself as one of the better non-guard players in the NBA almost as soon as he got to the league. But it is less well known that the Hick From French Lick modeled his game after a teammate who also played outside of […]

Larry Bird and Dennis Johnson’s secret pass with the Boston Celtics
Larry Bird and Dennis Johnson’s secret pass with the Boston Celtics
Hall of Fame Boston Celtics stars Larry Bird and Dennis Johnson had an undeniable chemistry together on the court that helped them win two titles together in the mid-1980s, and it was not just a good sense of each other’s abilities on the parquet that helped make it so elite. *points up, up, up*
Yes, yes, yes! To all of this!
Steve's a sports dude, like 1000%. It's one of his most ingrained personality traits. It's all over his character, we know this about him, and it's rich for exploring in so many various ways.
He's definitely a Bird guy in my headcanon. Bird vs. Magic was huge, it revitalized the sport, and then Jordan joined the league. It was an awesome time for basketball. I get that everyone says that about the era they grew up with, but damn. The Dream Team was right around the corner. And I cannot even begin to explain how huge that was at the time. It was a Big Deal™️. If you're writing Steve in the summer of '92? He's glued to the TV. He's wearing the t-shirt where they're all drawn as caricatures. It was Bird's swan song, and was assumed to be Magic's too, since he'd already retired from the NBA after his HIV diagnosis. That Magic was able to convince Bird and Jordan to play, when they really didn't want to, was a feat of, well, magic.
Larry Bird is pretty fascinating, too. The Hick from French Lick. The biggest trash talker the league has ever seen, maybe. But he could back that shit up, tenfold. He was that good. That reliable. The first Three-Point Contest during the All-Star weekend was held in 1986. Bird won that. And he won the next two years, as well. And he played with chronic back pain. How was he hurt? Laying a driveway for his mom. While a NBA superstar. It cut his NBA career short. Just being a midwestern dude, doing something for his mom.
And Steve would have followed all of this.
If you have any interest in this time of basketball, read When the Game Was Ours by Bird and Magic.
Or watch this documentary about The Dream Team:

Sports: It's who Steve is. Have fun exploring that side of him!
On the topic of people taking away Steve’s canon interests, this fandom phenomenon has been driving me crazy for months. Too often I’ve seen people say that Steve doesn’t have any interests, that he doesn’t have anything going on for him, that fandom has to make up Steve’s interests and hobbies because poor canon Steve doesn’t have any when he literally does! Like just because fandom doesn’t like sports doesn’t mean that it isn’t a canon interest that Steve has, he was literally in two sports teams and he was the co-captain of one, and like he was clearly proud of being on the swim team since he boasted about it in that one scene in s4. Like fandom has this idea that Steve’s interests are too mainstream or aren’t rebellious enough or something, so they think it’s up the fans to “fix” Steve of these interests and give him “better” and “cooler” ones but then turn around and complain that Steve has no hobbies or interests in canon, like make up your minds
Yeah it’s a tragedy :( just let him be the midwestern dad standing in front of the tv with his hands on his hips yelling at the game that he was born to be
#yes!#Steve's a sports dude#i also headcanon that he loves the olympics in general#it's a holiday to him that comes around every 4 (and later 2) years#swimming?#absolutely#steeplechase?#for sure#everything else?#you betcha#steve harrington#stranger things#I also feel seen since I wrote Bird v Magic and the 1987 NCAA title into TtMaR because they felt so true to Steve's character#let him love sports#there's lots to explore#i promise
