#is it the two times i've had covid?#the handful of chronic health conditions and perhaps side effects from the medications i have to take for them??#the omnipresent internet being so distracting i can't focus on anything for longer than 20 seconds??#idk but whatever it is my brain is FOGGY and i am BAD at THINKING and FEELING about WRITING now#i just needed to express that#now i continue to wrestle with my very weak-sauce word doc#dollsome's deep thoughts#i am pretty sure you're supposed to get smarter as you get older (at least to a certain age!) but i'm doing the opposite. :(

Nearly 10 years ago I spent a week being tremendously ill then seemingly largely recovered. For the five or so years following that, my health slowly but surely declined. First it was pain. Then other bowel problems. Then fatigue. Every time I reconciled myself with the state of my body and adjusted my life to fit my newly reduced capabilities, I would find that a few months later I was once again too sick to handle what I had thought was going to be my new normal.
At my worst I basically didn’t leave bed for several months apart from to use the bathroom. I used a wheelchair because walking took too much out of me.
During this process I got tested for a whole bunch of stuff and basically just ran out of routes to persue. I tried a ridiculous number of dietary solutions and saw every specialist the NHS had to offer. No-one was able to establish anything beyond that I was sick for an unknown reason. A popular running theory was/is that much of what’s wrong with me was probably caused by my having been so ill for so long causing other problems to crop up, which was why I kept getting worse and worse.
Then about a month ago I got my appendix out. Shitty night of acute appendicitis and condescending homophobic paramedics. Within 48 hours though, I could tell that something was really different. At first I was unsure if it was just decent pain killers giving me a chance to relax for once, or perhaps a side effect of the general aneasthesia, but in the weeks that followed I’ve become more and more convinced that the difference is that my appendix is no longer constantly in pain.
It’s called a “Grumbling Appendix”, and basically means your appendix sucks but isn’t quite ready to explode yet. It’s in the vague grey area of commonality where my first-year-junior-doctor friend has heard of it, but none of the rare-gut-problems doctors I went to see over the years every mentioned the possibility. I’m like 97% sure that a fucked up appendix is the underlying problem that caused me to be sick enough that I developed all my other problems. A bunch of the pain triggers that have haunted me for nearly a decade have suddenly disappeared. My body is still a wrecked shit show, and I haven’t been able to detect any obvious positive healing trend beyond the initial disappearance of a subset of my symptoms - it’s early days yet so there’s no way to know if I’ll heal or if I’m stuck this way.
It’s not all that common and I was likely presenting oddly - I know that every doctor I ever saw gave me standard blood tests for inflammation markers and infection markers and I always came back negative. But I do know that the most significant focal point of my pain was on my right hand side just below the height of my belly button (i.e. appendix central).
I’ve believed for most of this decade that I would never know what was causing my body to fail, that it was probably not something that was even vaguely understood by current medical science (like a vast portion of chronic illnesses). I didn’t think that a real life Dr House would be able to save me, though I often daydreamed of a silver bullet cure.
That whole time, I had basically a minor variant on one of the most common serious gut conditions that exists. Probably, had a doctor really been passionate about figuring out where my pain was coming from and solving that, and they had the time and energy, it was totally figureoutable. And I don’t doubt that if I’d gotten my appendix out 8 years ago when I could still jog down the coastal paths with a 20kg backpack, I probably would never have gotten this ill. If I had the kind of doctor rich people have, I wouldn’t have lost my young adulthood.

Today is the 8th anniversary of the nuclear disaster at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan. On this day 8 years ago, 3/11/11, Japan experienced a 9.1 earthquake and resulting tsunami that destroyed a large portion of the eastern seaboard and caused at least 4 nuclear reactors to melt down, irradiating the facility and surrounding landscape with nuclear fuel. There were multiple detonations at the site in the following days which spewed nuclear fuel rods into the air, water and soil. The contamination of the Pacific ocean as well as the air at the coastline of Japan quickly spread around the world particularly the northern hemisphere. Obviously, the Hawaiian islands and the west coast of North America including Canada, the United States and Mexico were hit soonest and hardest. This official model of the path of the contamination plume is taken from NOAA’s website here. NOAA is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (the US government). Of course, since the nuclear material has yet to be effectively contained on site and likely never will be, the plume coming out of Japan has never stopped. It has been an ongoing circulating plume starting anew and aggregating every single day via ocean currents and the atmospheric jetstream for 8 years by now.
Most people and especially most sick people do not have the energy or even the cognition needed to thoroughly research this event and to come to rational conclusions about it including the potential and actual effects on our health and lives. There is also an active and lavishly funded propaganda campaign that’s been running on us in full force since the event intended to cover up both its occurrence in the first place and its completely predictable effects on the environment and in turn on our planet’s biomass (read: food, pets and ourselves) in the second. So there’s that.
It is my observation that propaganda is particularly effective against sick people and their carers knowing the truth about the nature and prognosis of disease where Big Pharma has managed to convince everyone that if we just swallow more and different poison that it will somehow make us feel better and not-poisoned and people believe it! Perhaps especially Americans seem unusually susceptible to patriarchal propaganda and ignorant about anything health-related and combined with our cultural death taboo and extreme patriarchal conditioning we worship Western medical (male) authority and accept its lies even when it is in direct opposition to our lived experience. That is the purpose and effect of propaganda afterall. American corporate interests pay billions of dollars annually to inundate Americans and others with pro-corporate propaganda (otherwise known as advertising) because they know it works.
Likewise, we have all been fed a line where the harms of male-made nuclear radiation have been known for decades and yet we have accepted “treatment” including diagnostic testing with male-made nuclear isotopes in the form of “nuclear medicine” for just as long and we are not expected to recognize the sleight of hand there and most of us do not recognize it until it’s too late if we recognize it at all. For example, cancer patients receiving so-called radiation therapy where radiation is known to cause cancer and which treatment actually does cause severe iatrogenic illness and injury requiring additional interventions and so on. Predictably, when these irradiated cancer patients almost universally end up dying anyway they are said to have died from the original cancer and “complications” of the cancer and perhaps helped along by the “side effects” of the medications. We are not allowed to consider that it was actually Western nuclear medicine that killed them and tortured them viciously up to the end.
The disaster at Fukushima is of particular import to readers of this blog and all chronically ill people everywhere because male-made radiation is known to trigger and/or exacerbate chronic inflammatory conditions and autoimmune disease. A cursory review of the medical literature bears this out even though most people do not realize a correlation exists. I didn’t know about it until I started researching radiation enteritis as a possible explanation for my own gastrointestinal condition where my dickless medical team were content with telling me the cause of Crohn’s disease is unknown. Anecdotally, while I was mostly able to control my GI symptoms for some 20 years using diet and supplements, I became increasingly ill after the Fukushima event as did other AI patients I know. By the fall of 2012 I was no longer able to control my symptoms no matter what I did and began a rapid descent into the hell of incurable and progressive disease. Here, in an article entitled “Radiation-induced inflammation and autoimmune diseases” we see that a causal link is accepted where people irradiated through nuclear accidents develop autoimmune thyroid disease and diabetes even though the exact mechanism by which radiation causes these diseases is not yet known.
Especially radical feminists are aware by now that due to men’s lies including so-called national security, biased accounts of history, corporate and other patriarchal propaganda campaigns and the like, our own history is mostly unknowable to us. We are unable to access the information we need to put the pieces together and the information we do have is unverifiable by male or scientific standards and therefore, our theories exist at the level of conspiracy theory (repackaged today as so-called “fake news”). Of course, the very existence of patriarchy is an unverifiable conspiracy theory/fake news to most people despite its obvious existence (patriarchy means that all relevant power lies in men’s hands with only token female representation in areas of military, economic, regulatory, academic, sci-medical powers and so on which is verifiably true but regarded as an unverifiable conspiracy theory anyway). We are used to this.
We, more than anyone, must seek out information where and when we can and then mostly rely on our own discernment as “verification” in order to save precious time and to come to rational conclusions about our reality and our lives. We must come to rational conclusions if we are to act in our own best interests and under patriarchy this is exactly what women are forbidden to do. As a shortcut, I recommend the work of the Nuclear Proctologist aka Canadian anti-nuke activist Dana Durnford to those who want to understand what happened at Fukushima on 3/11/11 and what the literal and figurative fallout of that event has been and is likely to be, particularly the related effects on our own health. Fatigued? In pain all the time? The little-known illness that is far more common than we’ve previously thought, especially among geeks.
This is going to be a bit long, but it's so incredibly important, and so very much not just a personal issue that I hope you will read it (and hopefully, also share it). I'm choosing to speak about this now because this is an insanely unknown, disabling and yet seemingly a fairly common illness, and I want more people to know about it, especially as it affects geeks--geeky women in particular. I’ll talk about my own variant briefly at the beginning, but don’t stop reading there, thinking this is just a personal post--there are lists of symptoms and resources at the end that I urge you all to look at, because they are *frighteningly* common.
I and the doctors have finally found out I've got Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.
Which means there is one, or there are several, genetic mutations in my body messing up the build of my collagen, collagen being the glue that holds your body together and which is found practically in all your tissues. So, technically, anything that can go wrong with your body might do *exactly* that, because that b0rked collagen is everywhere. This is why I've always been not only hypermobile (being good at yoga and able to bite my toenails and tie myself into knots while sitting down), but easily fatigued and have had trouble simply sitting, let alone standing or walking, because my muscles have to strain like crazy all the time to compensate for my connective tissues being too wobbly. (Every time I've participated in guided meditation, the exhortation to "sit up with your back straight, your body as relaxed as possible" has always been absurd to me, because I can't hold myself upright if I don't tense my muscles. Try it: lightly tense all the muscles in your body for a bit, and see how long you can hold that, and you will know what staying upright is like for someone with EDS). It's been said that having it is like the body having to do strength training with weights all the time, except, unlike on a normal person, the muscles never get to rest and recuperate fully (except during sleep, and even then perhaps not completely; to make it even more fun, sleep disorders are a common manifestation in EDS). I sprain things all the time--I do my back in even in my sleep, and get trapped nerves/sciatica just from walking; winter clothes, let alone bags, are exhausting for me to carry even for short distances. For me, lifting a coffee cup, due to the laxity of my connective tissues, requires the same amount of muscular exertion as it requires for a healthy person to lift a full pint. Et cetera. Plus all the other weird ailments, which I'll get to in a bit.
But the main reason I'm telling you all this is that you really, really, *really* ought to read up on EDS. The whole world does. But especially if you, or someone you know, suffer(s) from chronic fatigue and muscular pain and are bendy--*because it looks like this is actually the illness behind many (not all, but many) fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome cases.* I repeat, *this is now assumed to be the most common cause of fibromyalgia and CFS.*
And then there's all the other EDS-induced stuff, all freakishly common among geeks. Here’s a list of some of the most typical symptoms:
-Bendy? "Double-jointed?" Good at yoga (even without practice)?
-Gut problems/IBS? Leaky gut?
-Serious fatigue, unrefreshing sleep, body feels like it's made of lead? And is it unexplained by other conditions (such as a dicky thyroid or anemia)?
-Sleep problems, anxiety/panic attacks/PTSD, autism spectrum, AD(H)D?
-Bad PMS and awful reactions to the Pill and other progesterone preparations, health crashes after pregnancies, dysmenorrhea with godawful cramps (like you're giving birth to a demon baby every month), endometriosis, fibroids, pelvic pain and other gynaecological issues?
-Allergies by the bucketful? Multiple chemical insensitivities?
-Weird heart thumpages, blood pressure issues, fainting when standing up?
-Early-onset problems with eyesight?
-Can't go numb from anaesthetic, and/or are hard to put under for surgery (this is great fun)?
-Feel pain more intensely than other people (developing needle-phobia from horrid experiences when having blood drawn or being put on an IV drip)? Are all dentist trips and having gynaecological exams (even sex and wanking at times!) a nightmare?
-Or, as a bonus, has the weird pain response made you kinky or just crazily responsive to acupressure/acupuncture? Or just caresses?
-Have you got weird and/or excessive scar tissue formation? Keloids from piercings? Have your wounds healed badly; after surgeries, have your stitches torn spontaneously?
-Got hernias, squashed-up internal organs, including a heavy/tilted uterus, breathing problems like your lungs are squashed (but asthma inhalers don't seem to help much)?
-Weird bruises, and you have no idea where they came from? Excessive bleeding (including bleeding buckets during periods)? Varicose veins at a young age?
-Flat feet? Funny little round, soft bumps (piezogenic papules) on your ankles? Need sturdy shoes with high tops and arch support? Find it difficult or impossible to walk in high heels, due to wobbly ankles and/or the muscular strain it puts on the whole body?
-Constant sprains, muscle pulls/tears, dislocations, subluxations (=partial dislocations; just something going 'crunch', like when the bones of your hand or your vertebrae seem all scrunched up together and you need to pull them open), trapped nerves, monster headaches? Growing pains? Pressure in the skull?
-Just. Hurt. Everywhere?
-Weird adverse reactions to medications that are way worse than ordinary side effects, completely intolerable and/or causing permanent damage, even life-threatening situations?
-Even queerness/gender-atypicality (I am not joking; it goes with the neuropsychiatric profile)?
Guess what, they're all related to this exact damn thing! And just how common are they in fandom, among geeks?! Right? Weirded out yet? And this is *far* from being an exhaustive list, because again, this is a multisystem disease which can technically affect pretty much all your body parts and their functions. But if you said "yes" to several, take a deep breath and keep reading. Or if not, hell, keep on reading anyway, because it's likely you know someone with this thing--it could be as common as 5%-10% of the whole human population.
Even if you are born with this rubbish, people go undiagnosed for decades (I only got diagnosed at 38, and I’ve been sick ever since childhood!) and since it mostly affects women (although guys *can* be affected), it's ignored and/or psychiatrisised by doctors. And since the female body is a chaotic body horror movie anyway, many have just thought it's normal to always have little sprains and crunches everywhere all the time, and that the fatigue just has a merely neurological basis. That it's just depression or a part of having been born with XX chromosomes. But it isn’t.
And another main reason that it goes undiagnosed is the persistent myth that EDS *always* has to involve extremely stretchy skin and extreme hypermobility, which is categorically *not* the case for everybody. Even the sodding Wikipedia article (misleadingly) only uses photos of *extreme* hypermobility and skin stretchiness, of the usual circus performer contortionism EDS has traditionally been associated with but which is NOT WHAT YOU NEED TO HAVE TO HAVE EDS, I repeat, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A RUBBER PERSON TO HAVE EDS; you only have to be bendy and exhausted and ill. There are some people with it who are even *stiff.*
Thousands, hundreds of thousands of people remain undiagnosed even if EDS/hypermobility-related illness seriously messes up their daily lives--it can be debilitating. So, please, do yourself and your friends a favour and spread the word, and check out these links.

I don't often say this, but reblog to save a life. These are geek illnesses, *our* illnesses. There are forms of this stuff that are lethal (causing stroke and heart attacks and organs going boom out of the blue at a young age), and the amount of suffering it can cause is ridiculous--I would have lived my life in a drastically different way, and would have never got so ill from the wrong medications and life choices, had I known I had EDS. (Just don't call me a "spoonie;" I'm not a fan of that thing--I'll explain later. Call yourself whatever you like; however, I'm still a ridiculous arctic chicken just as I've always been.) But there are still thousands of people out there who have all these symptoms and yet have never heard of this stuff, and for whom this knowledge can be life-changing, so *please,* spread the word.

Mental Health and Mindfulness Activity Research
With us deciding which activities we will be holding in our festival, I decided to do some research on how the activities we brainstormed are used to help with relieving and reducing anxiety and stress (which is very common amongst our target group: students) as well as general mental health.
Meditation:
Standard medical treatments for anxiety are anti-anxiety medications, cognitive behavioral therapy, or a combination of both.
Anxiety disorders affect about 40 million Americans.
Therapy is time-consuming and expensive.
Anti-anxiety medications work fast, but are some of the most addictive substances around and are not intended for long-term use.
Latest research shows that meditation works as well as commonly prescribed anti-anxiety medications!
A regular meditation practice not only can reduce anxiety symptoms, it also can reverse the damage caused by anxiety.
Researchers from Johns Hopkins University sifted through over 18,000 mindfulness meditation studies to determine its most effective uses. They concluded that the number one use for meditation was anxiety relief.
Other studies support that meditation benefits mental disorders of all kinds including generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, panic disorder, agoraphobia, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, binge eating disorder, bipolar disorder and addictions.
Meditation can reduce rumination, even in those with lifelong mood disorders
Meditation Balances Brain Chemicals
Meditation increases the level of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a neurotransmitter essential for feeling happy and relaxed.
Feeling anxious, easily overstimulated, and overwhelmed are common signs that you might be low in GABA.

Art therapy is a distinct field and art therapists are trained and educated in both art and psychology
Making art enables you to feel and express gratitude by helping you to observe and see beauty where others may not. It also gives you an outlet for expressing some of your anger and frustration, as well as your personal political and world views.
Art can help you discern feelings and express thoughts that are difficult to articulate. Engaging with the arts and creating something is a way of engaging with and being in relationship with yourself, helping you to know yourself better. The process of creating art opens channels of communication beyond those of the purely verbal, dissolving barriers caused by words or our own internal censors, helping us to see ourselves, and others, more fully and clearly. In so doing it connects us more deeply to ourselves and to each other. If you are working in class with other people the atmosphere becomes one in which there is a mutual give and take of ideas, and a spirit of generosity. The creative process helps to create new relationships and foster existing ones in a positive productive environment.
Therapeutic Photography:
Therapeutic photography involves taking, analyzing and using photos for the purpose of personal healing, growth, or understanding, whether done consciously or unconsciously. By actively constructing, exploring and reflecting on photographs by pairing it with creative writing, you are able to learn more about yourself and how you see the world.
Photography can be a form of mindfulness (or present state awareness), similar to meditation, which is proven to help people suffering from depression and anxiety. Often when you’re taking photos, you can find yourself in “flow”, which brings many health benefits similar to meditation like calming the mind and providing relief from stress.
By creating photos that you are proud of, you can start to build self-esteem. Similarly, sharing your photographs and getting positive feedback from others can help you continue to build confidence and become empowered, which can help you become more comfortable expressing your opinion, thoughts, and story with others. A 2014 study found that those who took part in creating visual art had a significant increase in psychological resiliency. The neurotransmitter dopamine can be increased through this process, which can be lacking in those suffering from depression and has been found to immediately start to help prevent depressive-like behaviours.
A person’s perspective on themselves and the world can be gradually explored and changed through the process of taking photographs, analyzing them and discussing with others. Neuroplasticity tells us that our brain has the ability to change constantly throughout our lives and grow new connections.
People are using therapeutic photography techniques to help themselves and others overcome depression, anxiety, chronic pain and much more.
Zentangle Art:
Zentangle is known to many artists and craftivistas as a way to create structured designs through drawing various patterns. Basically, it’s a specific way to draw images, most often in black pen on white paper.
Zentangle has become an international phenomenon that now has applications in stress reduction, education, therapy and even motivational training.
Zentangle itself may be relatively new, but the basic principles involved are as old as the history of art.
It includes ritual [a core practice in ancient and contemporary arts] and mirrors the symbols, designs and patterns of numerous cultures [Mayan, Maori, Celtic, and American Indian, for example] from ancient through present times. And like “doodling” it is based on a human behavior in which one refrains from planning and allows lines and shapes to unintentionally emerge.
It Teaches How to Own Mistakes: Using a pen on paper requires that you risk making mistakes; in fact, most tangle art has at least some misplaced lines which cannot be erased. Tangling teaches you how to incorporate what seem like “mistakes” into the overall pattern of the design. It’s a great metaphor for everyday life—nothing is ever perfect, but how you adjust to imperfections [mistakes or the unexpected] in life is what really matters.
It Reinforces “Aimlessness.”: Many Zentangle enthusiasts highlight the tangle doodle process as a form of mindfulness. I like to think of tangling as a form of "creative aimlessness."
