Of all the tragedies that plagued Scully during the X-Files run, I think the worst one was Melissa's death.

Her father's was natural, and at some point expected. Her various abductions and close calls, part of the job. She survived the cancer. Emily was a tragedy, but her suffering was short, and her connection with Scully herself even shorter. Mulder, in the end, came back from the dead.

I guess if I accepted William's arc, I'd have to agree that losing your child, twice, is just too damn tragic. But with the way the William plot evolved I feel no respect for it, as it completely ignores character arcs, so I can safely say, Melissa's death was the worst of all.

Melissa was her sister. Her big sister. And not an annoying one, they were close. Can you imagine losing a big sister, and having her being murdered instead of you? In your house? There are so many layers of grief there that have only ever been explored in fanfic, because the X-Files were already buried decades deep into the grief of losing one sister, and couldn't afford to spend time on the loss of another.

And for that exact reason, I think Melissa's death was a big miscalculation from a storytelling point of view as well. Because Melissa couldn't possibly get the attention Samantha did, and Scully wasn't allowed to process what was a tremendous amount of grief, because the show didn't have the space for it.

i’m sorry but the funniest thing to ever happen in the x-files is by far mulder receiving a vial supposedly containing an important antidote in a vial from a villain character, so to test it first he gives it to the lone gunmen to run through the gc-mass spec they have (???) and it comes back as pure water, nothing else in it. naturally he goes back to the villain demanding the real antidote and the villain is like “there’s a microchip in the bottom of the vial dumbass”

the scene in the crackpots and these women where Josh is standing in front of a target listening to Ave Maria talking about how he doesn’t want to be saved while his friends aren’t. When he will in fact be targeted when his friends are saved and he will be so traumatized from nearly dying that he will associate music with sirens and nearly have a breakdown listening to another piece of classical music. Aaron sorkin when I find you.
