Hinduism's Puranas: Their Importance
Puranas are revered Hindu texts: The Puranas describe the universe's creation, deities, and Hindu ideology.
Puranas are based on five matters: They cover creation, secondary creation, god origins, Manu's regimes, and historical dynasties.
18 main Puranas: The texts tell mythological stories of gods and goddesses, such as Shiva, Vishnu, and Parvati.
Vishnu Purana is considered a gem: It presents Vedantic realities through mythical stories.
Puranas convey Vedas' message: They make Hindu principles accessible to common people.

Garuda - the Divine Vahana of Vishnu Talon Abraxas
Garuda was said to be the king of birds, and the Vahana of Lord Vishnu. In Hinduism, Vahana has a great significance as the Vehicles of Gods and Goddesses. Garuda was immensely powerful, and was so huge that he could even block the sun. He resembled a bird with the head, wings, talons and beak of an eagle and the body of a man.
Garuda was the eternal enemies of the nagas, or serpents, and used to kill them and eat them. Garuda’s image is often used as a charm to protect a person from snakes or snake bites, as it was thought that snakes were afraid of him, and did not harm his devotees. Garudi Vidya is a hymn used to cure all kinds of snake poison and remove all evil from this world.
He is known by various names, like Chirada, Gaganeshvara, Kamayusha, Kashyapi, among others. There is an Upanishad in his name, the Garudopanishad, and a Purana, the Garuda Purana is sang in his devotion. The earliest mention of Garuda is in the Vedas, by the name Syena. It is written that the mighty bird was responsible for bringing nectar to earth from heaven.

VISHNU PERSONA CHART
“Vishnu is the supreme being who creates, protects, and transforms the universe. Vishnu (or Viṣṇu, Sanskrit: विष्णु) means 'all pervasive'[16] and, according to Medhātith (c. 1000 CE), 'one who is everything and inside everything'.[17] Vedanga scholar Yaska (4th century BC. The Garuda Purana (chapter XV)[20] and the "Anushasana Parva" of the Mahabharata both list over 1000 names for Vishnu, each name describing a quality, attribute, or aspect of God.The conch shell is spiral and symbolizes all of interconnected spiraling cyclic existence, while the discus symbolizes him as that which restores dharma with war if necessary when cosmic equilibrium is overwhelmed by evil. One of his arms sometimes carries a gada (club, mace named Kaumodaki) which symbolizes authority and power of knowledge.” -Wikipedia
“Vishnu is one of the most important gods in the Hindu pantheon and considered a member of the holy trinity (trimurti) of Hinduism with Brahma and Shiva. Vishnu is the Preserver and guardian of men, he protects the order of things (dharma) and he appears on earth in various incarnations (avatars) to fight demons and to maintain cosmic harmony.”

The Goddess said:
O Kesava! today you along with Brahma and the host of gods take the bath in my vaginal-water and sip from that water without delay.
Your pride will be purged after you had done this. Then you being endowed with the power of others, should along with Brahmā, proceed to the heaven by riding your mount Garuda.
Having been thus commanded by the great goddess Kameśvari Keśava with Brahma took their bath in the water oozing out from the vagina of the goddess and also sipped from the water.
Kesava and the gods having taken their bath became extremely delighted and proceeded to the heaven with the consent of the goddess.
While the host of gods proceeded to the heaven along with Kesava and Brahma they had observed the goddess Kämākhyā moving through the ether.
They had also observed that thousands of Nilakūtas studded with thousands of pudenda of stone were there covering the sky and below the earth.
Those gods quickly climbed up to every one of Nilakūtas took their bath in the vaginal water and sipped water from that water. Thus they derived extreme pleasure.
The gods became highly astonished, their sense turned nimb, they kept on praising again again, the vagina of Kamākhyā.
The gods then paid their obeisance to the preceptor of gods , Bṛhaspati, and offered prayers to me; having been permitted by me, they with their eyes blossoming like flowers in their joy, returned to the heaven.
O Bhairava! the glory of the goddess Kämākhyā is like this and her kavaca is like as, what has been stated. O my sons: therefore, get this kavaca, use it as you like and be happy. What else should I tell you relating to the glory of Kamakhya? A piece of iron turns into gold if it comes into contact with the vagina-stone of the goddess.
If a person takes his bath in the water oozing out the vagina and sips from it he is never born on this earth again and at last attains liberation.
Here ends the seventy second chapter of the holy Kalikapurana, called the glory of Kamakhyā,
Kalika Purana 72.78-89

What is the link between meditation and enlightenment?
We have to first understand why we are not enlightened. We are unenlightened because our minds are impure.
Mind causes both bondage and liberation
It is the view of wise men that the mind is the cause of both the bondage and liberation of embodied beings. If the mind is attached to the Gunas of Prakriti and their products, it leads to bondage; but when it begins to feel delight and attraction for the Lord (Purusha), it leads to liberation. When the mind is freed from the impurities of lust and greed generated by the sense of ‘I’ and ‘mine’, it attains to purity and rests in equanimity, being unaffected by pleasure or pain. Then the Jiva, endowed with knowledge, renunciation and devotion, experiences in truth the Supreme Spirit transcending Nature (Prakriti) – Kevala (untouched by anything), eternal, self-effulgent, subtle, indivisible and unconcerned – as well as Prakriti with all its binding power destroyed.
Srimad Bhagavata Purana III.25.15-18
So how do we purify our minds. Meditation is a method to purify the mind. How does meditation work?
On Meditation
As we get butter by churning the curd, fire by rubbing the two pieces of wood, so by constant and concentrated meditation we can realize the Self and obtain peace. The Self is eternal, indeclinable, truth, omnipresent, all-supporting, great, non-comprehensible even to the mind. In the form of Existence, Consciousness and Bliss, the self is stationed in the heart of all creatures. While all other things are mortal, the Self alone is immortal. The Self is present in all beings as the ether in fire and water.
The Supreme Self, like the fire, is not attached to anyone. It is compassionate to the devotees and for their protection it assumes human form but the ignorant regard it as man.
If a person possessed of differential knowledge meditates on him in the heart, the Unborn Self is pleased by his devotion and appears to him in his true form.
It makes the seeker ever gratified when all sorts of desires forsake for ever.
Hence, leaving your ego and attachment for this mortal frame you should move all alone in this dream land without imbibing any sense of desire.
Where is stability in dream, truth in magic, eternity in the autumnal cloud and reality in the body?
Knowing that the world is born of ignorance, you should restrain your senses and control your mind, thereby you will obtain peace.
Garuda Purana, Dharma Khanda, Chapter VI
Truth dawns in a purified mind.

Ashta Nagas 🐍 Name of Ashta Nagas – 8 Snake Gods or Serpent Deities In Hinduism, the Ashta Nagas are eight gods who are snakes. South India, especially Kerala, South Karnataka, and parts of Tamil Nadu, is where they are most famous. Each of the eight snake gods is honored on its own. List of Ashta Nagas- Name of 8 Snakes God Ashta Nagas are worshiped to cure of skin diseases, pregnancy problems and to avoid all kinds of problems in the zodiac caused by Rahu and Ketu being in bad places in Horoscope. People also belive that making offerings to the eight nagas will help them find hidden wealth and happiness. They are Anantha or Sesha Naga Gulika Vasuki Shankapala Thakshak Mahapadma Padma and Karkodaka Chapter 5.2 - Ashtanaga—Eight important Nagas Out of the one thousand serpent children Kadru had, 8 important nagas are called Ashtanagas. They are: 1Ananta, 2 Vasuki, 3 Takshaka, 4 Karkotaka, 5 Shankha, 6 Padma, 7 Mahapadma, 8.Gulika. They are the nagas that are worshipped. Many of the ashtanagas are important characters in the Itihasa Puranas. Ananta He is the most important of the ashtanagas. The name itself means one who has to end. It means he is infinite. About the birth of Ananta, ValmikiRamayana says like this. From Mahavishnu came Brahma and from Brahma came the Prajapatis. From this it can be surmised that Ananta is a Prajapati. But as per the Mahabharata,Ananta is born to Prajapati Kashyapa in his wife Kadru. When Kadru and Vinatha, two of the wives of Kashyapa, were fighting and to win in the bet Ananta was asked to hang from the tail of Iravata. Ananta lost his peace and so went to places of pilgrimage and fasted. Immersing himself in reflections on Brahma, he obtained a boon from him. The boon was that even if the entire universe burns down, Ananta will not perish. That is how Ananta becomes Adi Shesha and the leader of nagas. He also became the bed and shade of Mahavishnu. It was because of the boon he received he went into the Hades and began to hold the worlds upright supporting them with his hoods. It is garuda that helps Ananta in this task of holding the worlds. Ananta has one thousand hoods and on the main hood there is the mark of Svastika. This indicates the Sun and Vishnu. As weapons he holds a plough in one hand and an iron pestle or mace in the other. He is served by Shridevi, Varuni Devi, Nagakanyaka and many other goddesses. The belief is that Ananta dwells in the abode of Varuna in the West. Ananta is not merely the eldest of the brood, but he is the noblest and occupies an elevated niche in the hierarchy of things. He is softspoken, philosophical and has an ascetic character. He is the one who leads the group of ideal serpents. Two of Ananta avatars are Lakshmana, the younger brother of Rama and Balrama, the elder brother of Krishna .The Anantashayanam indicates the mutual relations between Vishnu and the Serpent. Vasuki He is the son of Kashyapa and brother of Ananta. He spent his childhood with his parents. As a devote of Shiva, he dwells in the body of Shiva. According to the Puranas, it is thought that Vasuki is the ring on the finger of Shiva. In the quarrel between Kadru and Vinata, Vasuki did not support his mother and so he was cursed and therefore he had to live away from his mother in a different group. Vasuki has a special place amongst the important deities of Shaivas. Vasu means diamond. The one with a diamond on the head is Vasuka, that is Kashyapa. the son of Vasuka is Vasuki. Vasuki has the white colour of diamonds. When the Devas and Asuras churned the Ocean of Milk, they used Vasuki as the coir for binding the Manthara Mountain which was used as the churning stick.

Lakshmi and Vishnu
The Vishnu Purana talks about the six divine attributes of the consort of Goddess Lakshmi, collectively called Ṣaḍ-aiśvaryas.
Those six divine qualities or traits of Bhagwan Vishnu are :
Jñāna (knowledge): Lord Vishnu has complete knowledge of each and everything in existence. His knowledge is not limited by space or time. He is always aware of everything in the past, present, and future.
Bala (strength): Lord Vishnu possesses unparalleled strength. He can lift mountains just by a mere thought.
Aiśvarya (command): He has full command over His entire creation. Everything happens according to His will, without any hindrance whatsoever.
Vīrya (valor): Lord Vishnu is Vīra, a hero of unmatched valor. No one can defeat Him in a duel, except Himself—[Vīrya can also be understood as a tendency to be unaffected by external factors].
Śakti (ability): Bhagwan Vishnu is Sarva-śaktimān. He is fully capable of doing everything that others can do. At the same time, He can also do that which others cannot.
Tējas (independence): Bhagwan Vishnu is independent of everything other than Him. He does not need the assistance of someone other than Himself for doing anything.
Even though Bhagwan Vishnu is said to have infinite attributes according to Vishnu Purana, Brahma Moksha Kanda of Garuda Purana talks about Sri Vishnu’s 32 auspicious traits.
Narayana, the lord of Lakshmi, is possessed of Thirty Two auspicious traits. O lord of birds, I tell them serially. The person who hears the same obtain quick deliverance.

Each soul is born in this world with a fixed number of breaths and once it has breathed his/her last one, the soul is not allowed to dwell in the same body, not even for a split second. Jagatguru Tatvdarshi Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj sheds light on the fact that knowing our time is so limited on this Earth, we do not consider that the repercussions of our actions are felt even beyond this life. By reciting the Garuda Purana after one has died, cannot reverse the consequences of our bad karmas. Then, what can? Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj leads us through the answers to this question in the sacred verses of Sant Garibdas Ji Maharaj, revealing the quintessential pillars of salvation, in this article: https://bit.ly/3UQOkAB

The Story of Ganesha and His Favorite Laddu
Ganesha, the elephant-headed Hindu god, is a very popular deity. He is the god of new beginnings and the remover of obstacles. The word 'Gana' in Ganesha means ‘mass of people’, and 'Esha' means ‘Lord of the people’.
Ganesha is the son of Shiva and Parvati. Another name for him is Siddhi Vinayak. His mount is a rat, and he is worshipped by writers, bankers, and scribes. His favorite foods are Modak and Laddu.
His birthday is celebrated as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganesh Chaturthi. This falls in Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi.
People worship Ganesha for blessings like knowledge, education, wealth, and wisdom.
The Birth of Ganesha
There are many legends about Ganesha’s birth. The most popular one is that of Goddess Parvati, creating him using turmeric. The Brahma Vaivarta Purana tells a different version. On Shiva’s suggestion, Parvati fasted for many years (punyaka vrata) to please Vishnu so that she would have a son. Vishnu told her that he would be born as her son in every kalpa (eon). Thus, Ganesha was born and the event was celebrated with great joy. All the gods came to see the baby. But Shani (Saturn), Suryadev’s son, did not look at the baby directly as his gaze had great destructive power. But he looked at the baby from the corner of his left eye.
But Parvati told him to look at the baby properly. When he did so, the child’s head fell off. Shiva and Parvati were grief-stricken. Vishnu then climbed on Garuda, his mount, and flew to the banks of the Pushpa-Bhadra river. He found the head of a young elephant and brought it back to Kailas. The elephant’s head was then joined to the torso of Parvati's son, and the baby revived. The child was named Ganesha. All the Gods present blessed him and left.
Another story says that Shiva unknowingly killed Aditya (Surya). Though he revived the dead boy, the latter’s father, Sage Kashyapa, was still angry. As he was one of the Saptarishis (seven great sages), he cursed Shiva, saying that Shiva's son would lose his head. When this occurred, Indra’s elephant’s head was used to replace it.
There is also another story. Once, the bath water used by Parvati was thrown into the Ganges. The elephant-headed Goddess, Malini, drank the water and delivered a baby with 4 arms and 5 elephant heads. Ganga, the river goddess, claimed him as her son, but Shiva insisted that he was Parvati's son, and reduced his 5 heads to one. Then he enthroned him as Vignesha, the controller of obstacles.
Ganesha’s Sweet Tooth
Ganesha is said to be very fond of sweets. Modak, a dumpling made of rice flour and jaggery, is his favorite sweet. For this reason, he is called Modakpriya, meaning ‘the one who loves modak’. The laddu is another favorite of Ganesha.
Mythology says that Ganesha’s grandmother, Menavati (Parvati’s mother), would pamper him by making laddus for him. But when he grew older, his appetite for laddus increased. Parvati thought that preparing a lot of laddus in a short span of time was not easy and so she made another dish that he would like equally. This was the modak, made of rice flour, coconut, jaggery, and ghee. Soon, the modak supplanted the laddu as his favorite sweet.
Ganesha and Kubera
The tale of Ganesha and his favorite laddu began when he met Kubera, the god of wealth and the treasurer of all deities. Laddu is often offered as prasad to Ganesha. Behind this lies an interesting story.
Once, Kubera invited Shiva to his palace. The idea behind it was to flaunt his palace, which was made of gold and all his wealth. But Shiva realized what Kubera’s intentions were and sent his son, Ganesha, to Kubera’s palace. When Ganesha reached Kubera’s palace, Kubera began to show off his wealth and expensive possessions. Ganesha was not interested in all this. All he wanted was food, but Kubera continued to boast about his wealth. He said that he had prepared enough food to serve at least a 1000 guests.
After a while, Kubera remembered his duties as a host and served all manner of delicacies to his guest, Ganesha. Ganesha began to eat and went on eating until all the dishes got over. However, Ganesha’s hunger had not abated. He looked around for more things to eat. Then, he began to eat the uncooked vegetables and raw food in the palace kitchen. Even then, he still felt hungry. Then, he began to eat all the gold utensils in the kitchen. On seeing this, Kubera became upset. He didn’t know what to do or how to deal with the unquenched hunger of Ganesha.
Finally, he went to Shiva and complained that Ganesha was gobbling up all his wealth. Shiva merely smiled and gave him a laddu that Parvati made. Then he told Kubera to give the laddu to Ganesha and assured him that the laddu would satisfy his ravenous hunger. So, Kubera rushed to the palace and gave Ganesha the laddu made by Parvati.
Since then, it has become the practice to offer laddus to Ganesha. It is believed to be an auspicious ritual that can attract the blessings of Ganesha.

The Liberators From Death - Kartik Inspirations 2024
(via The Liberators From Death - Kartik Inspirations 2024 / Day 22 - YouTube)
**The Liberators From Death** *By Sacinandana Swami* Sitting outside beside my beloved tulasi plant, which I worship each morning, I am surrounded by the melodious sounds of birds. Recently, I returned from a pilgrimage, the Goan parikrama, where I witnessed a poignant scene that stirred my heart and reminded me of our shared journey through life and death. As I walked along the parikrama path, I saw a gathering of monkeys sitting solemnly together. Unlike their usual playful and mischievous behavior, they were quiet, subdued, almost meditative. I felt compelled to draw closer and soon understood the source of their somberness: they were gathered around a fallen companion. The monkeys sat in grief, as humans do when a loved one departs, looking at me with an expression that seemed to seek solace and understanding. Their silent vigil for their friend felt deeply moving, reminding me of the universal experience of loss. Death is a reality that touches all beings, regardless of species. In the *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam*, it is said that all living beings in this world are akin to prisoners on their way to the place of execution. We are each bound to meet the end of this physical existence—some sooner, others later—but the inevitability of death remains a shared truth. This encounter with the grieving monkeys brought forward a question that haunts us all: is there any liberation from death or the cycle of rebirth? In response, ancient Vedic texts offer profound guidance. The *Garuda Purana*, specifically in the *Sarara* section, reveals six sacred elements that have the power to liberate us from the cycle of death: 1. **Arati** (the ritual of worship), 2. **The immortal words of the *Bhagavad-gita***, 3. **Tulasi leaves**, 4. **The water from the Lord’s lotus feet** (*charanamrita*), 5. **The sacred waters of the Ganges**, and 6. **The holy names of the Lord**. Each of these elements carries a divine potency that transcends the confines of our material existence. The holy names and the Ganges, for instance, have a unique characteristic—they come from outside this world. They are spiritual in nature, descending into the material realm to offer a bridge of liberation for the souls entangled in the cycle of birth and death. The *Bhagavad-gita*, tulasi leaves, and *charanamrita* all share this transcendental nature, bringing liberation to those who embrace them with devotion. Among these liberators, the holy name holds a special place. The holy names we chant, like "Krishna" and "Rama," are not merely words but are imbued with the power to free us from death. A beautiful verse describes the effect of the holy name, offering an analogy to quench the thirst of a spiritual seeker: *"O my tongue, suffering from thirst, please mix the delicious fresh nectar of the name Radha with the wonderfully sweet condensed milk of the name Krishna. Add to this the fragrant delights of pure love and drink this charming beverage at every moment."* The holy name is like a divine elixir, quenching our spiritual thirst and providing liberation from the bonds of the material world. Reflecting on the monkeys’ silent grief and the teachings of the *Garuda Purana*, I am reminded that liberation is indeed possible. By embracing these sacred gifts, especially through the practice of chanting the holy names, we can transcend the limitations of this world and attain a state beyond birth and death. This, ultimately, is the invitation of the spiritual path—a chance to step out of the endless cycle and awaken to our eternal, liberated nature. Thank you for joining me in this reflection, and I look forward to sharing more inspirations with you in our next session.
