Echoes of Souls | A.T
Pairing: Aemond Targaryen x f!reader
Summary: In the old, abandoned castle, she found a love letter addressed to her, written by someone who died a century ago.
Word Count: 1.121
A/N: Feedback is always welcome. English isn't my first language so excuse any mistakes but feel free to point them out to help me improve.
Chapter 1: Echoes of a Forgotten Past
Tumblr media
The old castle stood quiet and forgotten on the outskirts of King’s Landing, its once-glorious exterior now a ghostly relic of the past. Long vines of ivy climbed its weathered walls, making it appear almost as if nature had attempted to reclaim the abandoned structure. Shutters banged against cracked windows, held only by rusty, old hinges, while the wind whistled mournfully through the broken panes. Even the birds seemed to shun the place, their songs the only absence in an otherwise haunted landscape.
It was this eerie, magnetic pull that had drawn you here—a sense of familiarity combined with an insatiable curiosity for between all the projects the company allowed you to choose, this was the one that stood out for you. As you walked through the creaky front doors into the sprawling foyer, you were struck by the imposing architecture, which still held a sliver of its former grandeur. Your footsteps echoed softly against the hardwood floor as you moved through the house, your fingers lightly grazing the banister of the grand staircase.
A sense of déjà vu washed over you. You paused, trying to pinpoint the origin of this haunting familiarity. Why did every corridor, every room, seem like it held a secret, a memory just out of reach? It was as if you had been here before in another life, another time. But that was impossible—or was it?
As night fell, the castle’s eerie charm only deepened. You made your way back to the trailer with the delivery you had ordered. The moonlight casts silver shadows through the window. Exhaustion soon claimed you after dinner, and you drifted into a deep, dream-filled sleep.
In your dream, the world was different—brighter, more vibrant. Standing on the verdant grounds of the palace, it was no longer an abandoned relic. It was alive, bustling with people, laughter, and the roar of dragons. The skies above were filled with the majestic creatures, their wings casting shadows on the cobblestone pathways below.
You looked down at yourself, your attire reflecting a time long past. Rich fabrics and intricate embroidery adorned your gown, and your hair seemed to be styled in the fashion of nobility. Heart swelled with emotions you couldn’t explain as you walked through the manicured gardens of the castle, the very same one that looked like a dried jungle just moments ago. Everything feels uncannily familiar.
Suddenly, you felt a pang in your heart. A strange vibration in your chest. And then saw him. Your breath caught as you took in the sight of him. His tall, statuesque form was cloaked in regal hues, the fabric of his attire moving subtly with each of his graceful movements. He reached out to touch a blossom, his long fingers brushing the petals with unexpected tenderness, and in that moment, you felt as though she was witnessing a secret part of his soul.
His face, chiseled and strong, held a serene intensity. The angles of his jaw and the line of his nose were softened by the play of light and shadow, creating a portrait that was both striking and ethereal. But it was his eyes that truly made you hold your breath. Piercing violet, it seemed to see right through the world and into the very essence of things. When his gaze shifted and met yours, you felt an electric thrill course through your veins, as if his eyes held the power to unravel your very being.
Slowly, a rare, faint smile touched his lips, transforming his face with a warmth that contrasted beautifully with his otherwise austere demeanor. The sight of that smile, so fleeting yet so profound, made your heart ache with an inexplicable longing.
Something inside you is alarming that the man standing a few meters from you is the very same from the letter whose words haven’t left your mind. Aemond Targaryen.
His silver hair glinted in the sunlight, and his piercing violet eye, filled with a depth of emotion you instantly recognized, locked onto you. He approached with a look of tender resolve, his footsteps confident and deliberate.
“Vaela,” he called you, a name from your past life that felt both foreign and intimate. Familiar. “I was waiting for you. Walk with me.”
You nodded, heart fluttering with a mixture of excitement and calm, and took his offered arm. Something inside you told you to stop staring but how could you avert your eyes from his figure when it was making your heart beat so fast? You strolled through the garden, the scent of blooming roses enveloping you, the sound of dragon wings beating in sync with your heartbeat.
“I have something important to ask you,” Aemond began, his voice steady yet soft. He led you to a secluded alcove where the garden’s flowers seemed to bloom more brightly. He turned to face you, taking both your hands in his. “I have loved you from the moment we met. In you, I found my heart’s true desire, a soul that mirrors my own. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”
Tears welled up in your eyes, the emotions flooding through you from both the past and present. Why was your heart-warming so abruptly at his words? Why did they sound so familiar? How the answer seemed to wish to jump out of your lips so quickly. Aemond was strange after all. Perhaps something is created just in your mind. But it couldn’t be, could it?
“Yes, Aemond,” you whispered, your voice trembling with joy. “I will.”
His smile, rare and sincere, was a sight that imprinted itself deeply into your memory. Wishing you could see it again. He lifted one of your hands to his lips, your knuckles being touched so softly and yet intimately by them as his violet eye seemed to stare deep into yours.
You awoke with a start, the remnants of the dream lingering in your mind like the last notes of a haunting melody. You could still smell the scent of the flowers. Feel the touch of his lips on your skin. You realized in that moment that your journey here was no accident. The castle, the dreams, Aemond—they were pieces of a puzzle you were destined to uncover. Meant to find.
Clutching the blanket tighter around you, you knew the first light of day would bring with it a new resolve. You would unravel the past, discover the hidden secrets of this place, and understand why destiny had led you here. There ought to be answers somewhere in those walls. It was not just an abandoned relic; it was a bridge to your past, a testament to a love that had defied time itself.

Supercorptober - 4. Garden
Gardener AU (to be continued)
At barely twenty-five, Lena Luthor lives alone, works from her mansion - that oversees a whole hamlet, from her different lab buildings, her four annexes, and the cozy wooden houses built all over the fifty acres of land at her disposal.
Lena lives in a wild, empty village, surrounded by a lush, verdant, protective wall of greenery.
It's been slowly growing into a jungle since Lena's previous gardener tried to plant a bomb in her house and was promptly let go.
Lena doesn't mind, revels in the wilderness and the luxuriance of invasive plants, and Lena's employees (the ones she trusts enough to meet with) are too mindful of themselves around her to ever complain.
Samantha Arias, however, Lena's CFO, official acting CEO, and only friend, has no such qualms.
"Uff- Lena, this is absolutely terrible. Whoever persuaded you to live in the jungle?", she asked one day, after tripping on three strings of ivy and almost face-planting twice, her clothes greener after her eventful trip than they had been in her car.
"Whatever do you mean?" Lena responds cheekily, one eyebrow raised. "Are you for some unfathomable reason insulting my well-tended garden?"
Sam chuckles, and Lena follows suit.
"No, really, Lena, I know exactly why you haven't hired anyone else since- well, since the previous gardener turned out such a twat, but- this is not possible anymore. At some point it will become impossible to even exit your house, never mind go in."
Lena sighs in acknowledgement.
"I realise this, Sam, but- I can't go through this again. I don't even know the first thing about gardeners, I would have to screen them, and any unlucky pick would definitely have to spend a lot of time around the house considering the current state of the garden, so I would have to interview them personally to make sure we at least get along."
Sam nods, obviously already aware of Lena's concerns.
"What if I told you I'd already found somebody who I think would be perfect?"
Lena's right eyebrow twitches.
"What have you done now, Sam?"
Sam lifts her hands in defence.
"Absolutely nothing. I simply mentioned you in passing to my girlfriend, who, by the way, you still haven't met," Sam interrupts herself to throw Lena an accusatory look, "and as it turns out, her sister is a gardener and a landscape architect, and she's been looking for a job."
"Does your girlfriend even know who my family is?"
Sam shakes her head. "You told me not to tell anyone."
"Then what makes you think her sister would even come within ten feet of me, never mind willingly work for me?"
"I know her. Trust me, she won't mind. She would be happy to help - especially if you give her a job.”
"Fine, then. If she agrees to work for me once she knows who I am, I will see her for an interview. Deal?"
Sam's grin widens, and Lena has the distinct impression that she just fell into an elaborate trap.
*************
Kara Danvers rings Lena Luthor's doorbell on a Monday morning at 8:55.
Lena had been awaiting her, of course, as per their appointment, but she had also definitely expected to be stood up.
Yet the doorbell rings, and when Lena comes to open the door, she's faced with a preppy blonde who seems better suited for HR than gardening.
The blonde's eyes widen for a tenth of a second at the sight of her, and Lena sighs internally.
It looks like the interview will be short, after all.
She extends her hand in greeting nonetheless.
"Hi, I'm Lena Luthor."
The blonde shakes it with a surprisingly firm grip.
"Kara Danvers”, she answers with a smile.
Lena releases Kara's hand, beckoning her to come inside.
A little while later, both women are seated on Lena's immaculate white couches, opposite one another, glasses of water on the table separating them.
"I'm sorry for asking this question, Ms. Danvers, but it's better if we don't waste both of our times here."
Kara's eyes meet Lena's questioningly, and the blonde's eyebrows furrow slightly.
"Yes?"
"Do you know who I am, Ms. Danvers?"
"Um- I think so? I mean, you're Lena Luthor, right?"
Lena's lips twitch into an involuntary smile.
"Yes, I am. But surely you've heard of my family? Why would you even want to work for me in these conditions?"
"Well yes, I know about your family, but I also read a lot about what you did, once you got the reins. I saw you invest in oncology research,  air cleaning, divert from resource spoliation, patent some of the most revolutionary inventions of this century, so- To be honest, I'm quite excited to be working for you."
Kara has gathered her hands in her lap, awaiting Lena's sentence, while Lena is busy picking her jaw off the floor. She’s never heard her achievements listed quite this way, without judgement or a follow-up statement reminding her of the Luthors’ legacy, and how little what she did could offset the damage already wrought.
"Well- in that case- I can pay you 300k a year, with health benefits and property insurance. You would be expected to get here around nine A.M., leave around 5 P.M., but hours are flexible. The one thing I ask is to respect my privacy around the house, and get this garden back to a liveable place. Should you want to stay on the grounds overnight, cook lunch, or simply rest, there is a secondary dependence built some hundred meters away, with all the necessities. Does that sound fair to you?"
Kara is openly gaping then, her eyes wide as saucers.
"Yes?"
Lena chuckles. "You don't sound sure. Why don't you take some time to mull it over, and get back to me some time this week?"
"No! No, no, I'm quite sure. I just- had some questions, if that's okay?"
Lena nods her assent.
"Um- what if I need some help, to pull fallen trees for examples, or simply another pair of hands to work faster, would that be allowed? Can I refer to my own contractors or would you rather I go through you?"
Lena purses her lips. Of course the task has become so monumental that Kara can't do it alone.
"Well, I would appreciate it if you could work alone to the best of your ability, but in cases where help is absolutely necessary, I would prefer it if you ran any person entering the premises through me. Of course, money for contracting will be covered, and budget should not be a problem."
"Okay." Kara breathes.
"Okay?"
"Okay, I'm in."
"You are?"
Kara laughs and Lena fights the urge to blush.
"Definitely." She replies easily, without a trace of hesitation, and Lena is truly baffled.
"Okay, well, when can you start?"
Kara grimaces with a guilty look, and Lena is instantly alarmed. There is always a catch.
Of course this was too good to be true.
"I- well, actually, I brought everything I need to kind of start today?"
Lena chokes on air.
Misinterpreting her new boss's silence, Kara rushes to explain herself.
"Sam said it was really urgent, and that I'd better get to it before it truly became a jungle, and since I've got nothing better to do, I just brought my tools, but if you'd rather- I mean, you don't have to pay me from today or anything, I just- this could give me a head start, unless-"
Lena raises a hand, but Kara's rambling doesn't stop.
"Ms. Danvers."
"Just say the word and I'll be gone until you want me to start, I-"
"Ms. Danvers."
"I really don't want to impose, I just thought-"
"Kara!"
The rambling stops abruptly, and the blonde's cheeks turn a lovely shade of red.
"Oh I'm so sorry, I was talking over you, I-"
"It's fine, Ms. Danvers", actually, Lena has to smother a chuckle, "I was simply going to say that you can absolutely start today, and that you'll of course be paid. Should you need anything, don't hesitate to ask me."
A disbelieving smile takes over Kara Danvers's features and Lena feels a pull on her lips in return.
"Just like that?"
"Just like that", Lena confirms. "I'll send you the contract this afternoon so that you can review it and sign it."
"Oh, well- thank you, Ms. Luthor."
"Lena." Lena gently corrects. "If you're a friend of Sam, I think we can do without the formalities, don't you, Ms. Danvers?"
Lena could have sworn she saw a blush colour the blonde's cheeks.
"Oh, well, if it's Lena to me, then-" Kara is absently fidgeting in a way that Lena immediately finds endearing.
"Kara it is," Lena completes, and Kara can't help but notice the beginning of a dimple.

Seasons — Javi Peña x reader
this is literally 1312 words of Javi mush. and no, don't look at me like that — soft Javi is the hill I am ready to die on. this one is for @iamasaddie. it can be read as a standalone but it kinda follows the same pattern as Frankie Morales fic I posted recently.
Tumblr media
Javier isn’t one for summer.
He finds no charm in the swelter, no joy in the length of its days. Days that stretch endlessly, blurring into sleepless nights filled with incessant thoughts, as aimless and restless as ceiling fans.
For Javier, summer spells oppression. Heat that clings like a second skin. Discomfort that saturates. Sweat that doesn’t let go. It brings chaos—within his mind and on the streets below his balcony where he spends the humid evenings smoking one cigarette after another.
It’s a ritual. A twisted kind of comfort. Peace. The only constant in his life.
The change comes unexpectedly—an icy trickle down the back of his neck. One, two, three, and then some more. Irritation is poised to erupt, but he pauses and tilts his head back and up. But instead of a brooding sky, there are droplets falling from the balcony overhead where a jungle of plants greedily laps up the water, nurtured by hands he’s never seen before.
His reaction, when it arrives, is a stifled grunt, swallowed by the city’s noise and a curl of cigarette smoke. And with that Javier rolls his shoulders and pivots around, retreating into the sanctuary of his apartment.
Your apology, tender and tentative, barely touches him before it's quashed by the sharp clap of the balcony door slamming shut.
The fall that year makes a swift entrance, and the first gusts of wind come with Javier’s first glimpse of you. You, with your light and effortless steps as you descend the stairs while he drags his own upwards to his fortress of solitude. And there is a brief pause; an exchange of glances. There’s your smile, bright against the fading light. And there is his nod, curt yet not unkind.
“¡Buenas tardes!” you greet as you pass him by, the scent of blossoms and freshly turned earth in your hair—a fragrance so potent that, for a heart-stopping second, Javier aches for the sun-drenched days of summer he claims to detest.
They carry on, these encounters you share, each brief and subdued: at the building’s entrance and at the compulsory tenants meetings, on the stairwell, when he's alone or when his arm is wrapped around a woman he won’t recall the name off the day after.
And it’s always the same. Your greetings, effortless and warm, contrast to his muttered replies; the way you start conversations he never tries to finish, offering smiles he won’t return. Each time, he retreats swiftly—back a little stiffer, his goodbye a bit sharper, a rehearsed move in the dance of social pleasantries.
Because, it’s easier that way, he thinks. Thus, he makes sure to rehearse his apathy, dons it like armour, even as his defences falter in the privacy of his thoughts.
Javier rarely speaks to his neighbours, especially not to you, but he finds himself going against the current of the river he knows so well.
He catches sight of you at the building’s entrance, grappling with an oversized fern whose lush leaves nearly conceal your form. Compelled by a rare impulse, he moves to help without a moment's hesitation. His hands stabilise the verdant mass as you navigate through the doorway, his movements surprisingly smooth and decisive—perhaps even natural—as you prop the door open for him and usher him into your world.
Inside, your apartment unfolds like a secret garden. Plants claim every nook: they sprawl across the floor, drape over shelves, crowd upon tabletops, and tumble from window sills. And it is exactly how Javier imagines your soul to be—warm, vibrant, and a sanctuary adorned with trinkets and photographs of beaming faces that mirror the smile you offer him—a smile he admits, perhaps only to himself, he has started to anticipate.
"Planning to supply Bogotá with oxygen single-handedly, are you?" Javier ventures, a trace of humour threading through his words for the first time as his eyes pause its wanderings around the slice of your home you've revealed to him.
When you laugh, it’s airy and delightful, resonating through the room like a melody. He places the fern in its designated spot, and his posture softens for a moment, though his hands linger awkwardly at his hips.
"No," you reply, the amusement clear in your tone, "I figured if I'm going to be surrounded by walls, I might as well make them beautiful."
And Javier wants to say it—the words teeter on the tip of his tongue. He wants to tell you that the beauty of these walls comes not from the lush greenery but from your existence among them. He wants to confess how many sleepless nights he's spent sprawled on his sofa, the soft creaks of your footsteps overhead weaving through the silence, rendering the darkness less oppressive, the nights less suffocating. But the words stall, barricaded behind a wall of reticence he can't quite breach.
So instead, he just smiles—a small curve of his lips—and looks down at his feet, shuffling slightly. His eyes linger on the worn fabric of his boots, a stark contrast to the vibrant life burgeoning around him in your apartment. Inside, a torrent of thoughts and unspoken words churns tumultuously; yet outwardly, he remains the terse man with a gun and a badge from the apartment downstairs, shielded by his solitude yet silently reaching out from behind his carefully constructed barriers.
And you take what he’s offering, with a tilt of your head towards your small couch as you speak, “Would you like some coffee?”
The first days of winter bring cool winds outside, but inside Javier there’s a new kind of warmth, gentle yet persistent. It’s in the way he now looks forward to the accidental encounters he used to dread before, and it’s in the glances that perhaps linger just a moment too long.
And it simmers with the brief exchanges on the stairs that no longer feel brief, with shared moments that seem to pause the time itself, and the fleeting touch of fingertips when they accidentally brush. It doesn’t knock either. Rather, it effortlessly crosses the threshold of his apartment—and his heart—sometimes with the misdelivered package, other times carrying a batch of freshly baked pandebono.
As the spring washes its colours across the city, so too does something fragile and new between Javier and you—something not born of chance, but chosen, nurtured like the budding blooms on the city’s trees.
It sneaks up on him with a cup of coffee in the morning, and a glass of whiskey as dusk falls. It clings to him, just like your conversations—the ones you lead with thoughts and tales, spinning the strands of tapestry Javier’s learning to read. A mosaic of people he’s never met and concepts he’s yet to grasp, but he finds himself wanting to learn.
Just as the first birds of paradise bloom, the summer begins once more. Heat still clings like a second skin. Discomfort still saturates, and sweat that doesn’t let go. But this time he embraces it, just like he embraces you when he pulls you closer and draws you onto his lap; into his life.
And from there on, it’s just closed eyes, subtle touch of noses, gentle words and gentler kisses. It’s you, and it’s him, and it’s his rough fingertips, and the soft skin underneath. And it’s whispers, and promises—the ones he intends to keep, and it’s blossoms, and sweet nectar on your tongue, and it’s peace and everything in between.
It’s his lips against your hair, and it’s the way you hold him. As though he could keep you warm. As though you are able to stitch wounds old and new; keep him safe. And he knows you could, he trusts you that you can, so when his breath hitches, and his body stutters in the sea that is you, Javier doesn’t seek a shore. Instead, he leans into the storm, allowing the current to sweep him toward the solace found in being utterly, hopelessly lost in you.

Left Hanging: The Rose Sisters' Botanical Bind
In the latest thrilling adventure serialized within the worn pages of 'Detective' magazine, the ever-intrepid Rose sisters, Cara and Maddy, found themselves amidst the lush greenery and floral fragrances of the local botanical garden. This sanctuary of serenity, usually a haven for hobbyists and horticulturists, had become the hunting ground for a new type of predator: a thief with a taste for the rarest and most valuable flowers.
Dressed in denim and cotton tees, the Rose sisters had exchanged their formal wear for a more down-to-earth guise as they mingled with the crowds, eyes scanning and minds racing. Their detective's intuition had already hinted that whoever was behind this was no ordinary burglar, but someone who knew their way around the world of exotic blooms.
The plot thickened when they met the garden's executive director, a woman with a smile like sunlight and words as soothing as the pattering of a gentle rain. Yet beneath her warm exterior, the sisters sensed a storm brewing. Her husband, a quiet man with a shadowy gaze, seemed to watch the garden not with pride, but with possession.
Undeterred, Cara and Maddy delved deeper into the verdant maze, until whispers of rustling leaves betrayed a hidden presence. It was then that they discovered the truth: the executive director and her husband were the culprits, harvesting the botanical riches they were sworn to protect.
Alas, the sisters' sleuthing led them into a trap. Before they could react, they were ambushed and found themselves in a predicament as precarious as it was unexpected. With expert knots, the treacherous twosome bound Cara and Maddy, suspending them between two exotic jungle trees within the greenhouse, a place where prying eyes seldom ventured.
Silenced by tape and bound by ropes, the sisters were the very picture of defeat, their figures captured as if by a surreptitious photographer, suspended in silent alarm. The greenhouse's glass ceiling cast dappled shadows over their determined faces, their situation dire but not yet despairing.
The executive director sneered at their capture, confident in her victory. "Enjoy the view, ladies," she mocked, before she and her accomplice vanished amongst the foliage.
Left in their leafy limbo, the sisters' situation seemed bleak. Yet even as they hung there, a plan was already forming behind their fierce, unwavering gazes. No words needed to be exchanged; they had been in tight spots before, and if there was one thing their captors had forgotten, it was the Rose sisters' uncanny ability to think on their swing.
The story left off with the sisters in suspense, literally and figuratively. The botanical garden's secrets were safe for now, but the tale of the Rose sisters was far from over. Readers of 'Detective' magazine knew that the next issue might reveal how the duo would twist and turn their way out of this latest cliffhanger. For in the world of Cara and Maddy Rose, every entanglement was an opportunity, and every dead end but a detour on the road to justice.

Done For
Summary: Azure Lion is sent to negotiate with a monster.
He finds a monkey.
Notes: So you know when you have this grand plan set out because you're so close to having both 500 works and a million words written on AO3 but the word count is off but you're so excited to share your 500th work?
AO3
The news came early in the evening.
A small group of celestial soldiers had been sent to the realm of the one known as Sun Wukong, the Monkey King of Flower Fruit Mountain. The plan had been to scout out the mountain and see the monkey’s forces. Considering his history of violence and threats against those who stood in the way, it was just in case. According to several nobles, the Dragon Kings were starving for a fight.
But the soldiers had been unable to complete the mission. One had returned, looking like he had been through a warzone.
“They…they came out of nowhere!” he had stammered. “An army of monkeys- they took everyone and then that-” A golden monkey, carrying the iron pillar stolen from Ao Guang’s palace, had allowed him to escape. To deliver the news. “He wants to negotiate.”
The Gold Star of Venus had perked up. “To negotiate?” The soldier had nodded. “Did he say what he wanted?”
The soldier had taken his head. “No, no,” he stammered. “But he promised that the others would be treated well.”
The debate in the court raged for days. Several wanted to just plummel this monkey into the ground. Others, like the Gold Star, wanted to negotiate. He had the right to take prisoners. The company had snuck on his land.
In the end, it was agreed. A negotiator would be sent to negotiate the release of the prisoners.
And that was when Azure Lion volunteered himself.
As Gold Star agreed, he didn’t notice the lion celestial’s satisfied grin as he stared at the floor.
Azure’s smile faded when he landed on the golden beach of Flower Fruit Mountain. The very moment his foot touched the sand, he could feel eyes digging into him. The lion took a deep breath. He needed to keep calm. He was a celestial warrior. He had faced bigger things than this.
With that, he began to walk for a few seconds before he found himself pausing at the beginning of the path.
Azure swore a trail hadn’t been there before, reaching up through the beach and disappearing into the jungle's green. It was clear. The king of this mountain knew he was here. He was expecting him. This was practically a red carpet and a welcome mat, rolled out and displayed just for him.
How powerful was Sun Wukong? Could he manipulate the entire mountain?
The warrior took in a deep breath and let it out slowly. “Keep your wits, Azure Lion.” He was a warrior of the Jade Emperor’s court. Nothing was more powerful than that.
He stepped forward.
The moment his foot landed on the dirt of the trail…nothing happened. Azure blinked as he stepped fully on the trail. Honestly, he had thought something would happen. But nothing did.
Deep breath in, deep breath out.
The trail was surprisingly nice. The eyes glaring at him hadn’t let up, but Azure was more distracted by his surroundings. He had never seen such verdant green trees or beautiful multi-colored flowers before. Butterflies, bees, phoenixes, and other such flying creatures could be seen. Occasionally, he caught a glimpse of a white tail of a monkey, but more often, he saw deer with glossy brown hides, sunny turtles with multi-colored shells, and cute little lizards running about.
Slowly, the trail began to move up. Azure almost didn’t notice until he came to a pause and realized he could see the ocean. He looked out and his heart skipped a beat at the vast expanse of natural beauty.
He had seen beautiful gardens. Flower Fruit Mountain had them all beat.
But the glares of unseen eyes were even fiercer now. He was getting closer to the king and the monkey knew it. Azure took another deep breath in, deep breath out.
Focus.
The trail was still nice and easy (even if you noticed how easy it would be to have spears or arrows aimed at you), but Azure was still winded when he reached a flat pane. Like the survivor had said, there was a giant waterfall. A small river with stones popping out was the path forward.
Azure continued forward.
It would be easy to just walk through the river. The water was barely up to the ankles. But he could not resist jumping from stone to stone, feeling very much like a small child. Maybe it was just this place, but Azure found himself laughing like a small boy that had found something extraordinary.
Before he reached the last stone, there was a rumble. Azure paused. His eyes widened as the waterfall glowed gold and a seal formed like water lilies blooming on a still pond. It looked like a heart-shaped blossom, spreading its petals across the water, before the water parted like a curtain.
Sun Wukong knew he was here.
Deep breath in, deep breath out. Ignore his racing heart.
Azure stepped through.
He must’ve been inside the mountain itself. A wide cave met his eyes. Still, there was no shortage of life. Flowers that bloomed in darkness shared space with glowing fungi. In spaces where sunshine shone through, sunshine-eating flowers and actual crops grew.
He crossed a bridge and came to a stop.
In the most immense cavern he had ever seen stood a stone manor. The survivor had described it as monstrous and hulking, but Azure couldn’t bring himself to agree. It was elegant, working with the space it had, and practically glowed with radiance.
What was even more amazing, however, were the monkeys.
Several nobles had personal zoos. Azure had always thought the animals looked rather sad, and that included the monkeys. Here, however, the monkeys gleamed with good health and joy. Until they all turned as one to stare at him.
That explained the glares.
Azure took a step forward and a few monkeys moved off the staircase. He took the path with a polite bow of the head.
The inside was even more beautiful, with bright colors and soft shades. It was more color than he had ever seen in Heaven. Even more monkeys waited inside, on either side of a path. Azure took a deep breath and continued to walk.
He was led to a set of grand red doors. The handles were the only horrifying or scary thing, sitting in the mouth of hideous monkey faceplates. Before Azure could study them, the doors opened.
The throne room was just as grand as the mountain. Wide windows allowed sunlight and a gentle breeze inside. It felt more like a garden with how much plant life and monkeys existed inside. A simple stone throne sat at the very end, perched on top of a large dias.
And, standing to the side and watering some flowers, was Sun Wukong.
He wasn’t a monster. He wasn’t even ugly.
He was beautiful.
Soft golden fur shone in the sunlight. More golden fur was leaking past a cute yellow cap. A tail swished back and forth, giving the monkey an air of casualness. If they stood facing each other, Azure was certain he would have to crane his head down, the monkey was so small.
Focus.
“Are you the lord of the palace, Sun Wukong?” His only response was a simple hum. “My apologies for just barging in, but I heard a disturbing rumor that you are holding a squad of soldiers hostage. I wish to keep things peaceful and I did not want to start a fight. So, I must ask: Did you do something to them?” He tried to keep his voice serious, but also warm. He wanted peace, not a fight.
“Who, me?” His voice was warm and sweet, honey-sweet laughter lining the words. A pleasant shiver shot up Azure’s spine. “I only showed them their place.”
“You’re holding them hostage.”
“Hmph.” Sun set down the jug and whirled around, revealing flashing golden eyes and sweet lips twisted into a sneer. Azure’s heart skipped a beat as he glared at him. “I don’t know who you are, but let me make one thing clear.” The room darkened as he stepped down the steps. The monkeys backed away, giving room for Sun Wukong and the golden glow of his magic. “I’ve got people to protect, monkeys I can’t neglect, so I’m not taking chances here.”
And there it was.
The staff, red and gold, right in his face. Sun began to stalk around him, looking more like a fierce jungle cat than a monkey.
“If you make one wrong move,” The door slammed shut. “ Anything I don't approve, then you're done for,” The monkeys vanished. “Boy, you better run or soon you will done for-”
“I know.”
There was a pause. A stutter.
“Excuse me?”
Azure turned. Deep breath, in and out. “I know we are not evenly matched. I know better than to dare to fight you.” He knelt at the king’s feet. “That is why I am here to pledge my loyalty.”
The room brightened.
“Um, what?”
Oh, this was better than he hoped. Everything was going to plan.
Truth be told, Azure had already met the terrifying Sun Wukong. Or, had seen him. Azure had followed the rumors of a monkey demon, a king, to the island. For a while now, anger at the bureaucracy of Heaven had burned in his heart, especially at the court’s rotten center.
The Jade Emperor.
However, as tempting as the idea was, Azure could not take the throne. He had no knowledge of how to rule. His only example in leadership was commanding armies and that was rare, only done if needed. And, he hated to admit, he was not the strongest one there. Cleverness and a willingness to learn had helped him rise.
He had followed those rumors to an island paradise hoping to find someone worthy.
He had found that and more in Sun Wukong.
It had been torture to stay away from the island from that first glance. Azure’s heart ached as he forced himself to walk away. It was so tempting to throw himself at the feet of his beloved and beg to be his. It was almost frightening- Azure had never felt this way towards anyone, not even the maidens and soldiers he had dalliances with.
This was love. True, all consuming, love. Even if Sun killed him now, Azure would happily die with a smile on his face. He didn’t like the idea of dying, but still. The pause was giving him hope.
“I am Qingmao Shizi, also known as the steed of the bodhisattva Manjusri, commonly known as the Azure Lion, and I am tired of corruption." He had a speech planned and everything. "The Jade Emperor is the heart of corruption, stretching from the Heavenly Court to the mortal realm. I have seen how mortals suffer. I have tried my best to help and I have begged the emperor to help, but he is unmoved. He thinks there is nothing wrong.” Azure didn’t dare look up. “And then I found you. I’ve seen how you love your subjects, your people, your home. You told me yourself that you are willing to kill any intruders.” The end of a tail wagged in his vision. “You have made this place a paradise. I wish to leave the Jade Emperor’s service and-”
“Be my sworn brother?!”
“What.” Azure craned his head up, not expecting those words. Sun’s frown had disappeared, replaced by a dazzling smile. “I don’t think I’m worthy to-” He held his hand up, not sure of what to do or say, mind in a daze.
Did he mean sworn brothers as in allies? Or sworn brothers as in husband ?
A warm hand wrapped around his and Azure was yanked to his feet. “I mean, I already have sworn brothers, but you seem pretty smart! I didn’t know animals were part of the court-” Azure was being dragged somewhere, still in a daze, almost unhearing of the babble.
“You want me to be your sworn brother. Sun, I-” The very idea of being husbands was enough to make Azure feel faint with want. “I don’t think I’m worthy.”
The monkey turned and grinned at him and there went his heart again. “Oh, hush. Sure you’re worth it!” That tail gently tapped his knee. “And, please. Call me Wukong.”
The thought of the soldiers he had sent here was barely a thought.
Instead, the sunshine smile of Sun Wukong filled his mind.
“Of course…Wukong.”

#41: cr2.wad (Crumpets 2) (2024)
Tumblr media
Download, made by Ribbiks ^^^
I guess Ribbiks retired? I wasn't in the Doom community again until the middle of last year and had gone ghost for a couple years before that, so I guess this is news to me. Regardless, they have shadowdropped this excellent little morsel of challenging goodness in the form of cr2.wad.
Episode 1 (maps02-04) are light on the challenge and have a very Kuchitsu-esque influence to them. Angluar geometry, not that hard, focuses on exploration. In one of the maps (I'm blanking on which one) there is a nice flower garden where a key spawns! I should mention before I go any deeper that according to Ribbiks these are speedmaps, and by god do they not feel like them.
You sort of have to appreciate Ribbiks as a Doom legend, being able to understand this game SO well to string together various concepts and ideas of a fight in so little time. Geometry, thing placement, and monster placement are all beautifully intertwined and there are countless works of theirs I could list that fulfill this standard ever since day one, and this is no exception.
Another thing I like about this is that monster placement (mas o menos) stays the same across difficulties; the major adjustments lie in ammo and health. For E1, this doesn't matter much as its motifs call for an easier time, but things get into proper Ribbiks form in E2 (maps05-07). I'm getting a sort of... Memento Mori, D2ISO/Scythe X Jungle motif metal and verdant green with nature vibe out of the aesthetic? That's another thing about these maps, they are GORGEOUS while not straying too far from vanilla idealisms.
In this second episode, players will face moving combat puzzles, usually involving a cyber turret from afar that will be your arch-nemesis for most of the map until you can afford to telefrag him, with the green low-HP Cyb being used for more incidental encounters.
Everything climaxes at the final map, a slaughter map through and through if the final fight doesn't convince you. I feel proud of myself for beating this one, even if it was on HNTR and with saves on the last two maps.
Seriously, check this one out. You see the simple title, you see there's only practically 6 maps, you're thinking "Why do I play this?".
My answer to that would be... Why wouldn't you? We got friggin' RIBBIKS maps in 2024. Do yourself a favor and don't miss this one.
