Ten best snacking options in India
Craving for a quick snack? Gol-gappa time? Maybe not because we have just emerged from a pandemic and hygiene is foremost on everyone's minds.  I asked  my 10-year old cousin and he too said that he's allowed to snack at 'proper shops' only. Thankfully, there are enough brands in India to satisfy every mood and craving.   Here are my top ten choices.
10. Dunkin Donuts
My search for a classic donut and bun maska came to a pause when I tried at Dunkin Donuts at Dehradun. The brand launched its first store in India in April 2012 in New Delhi, offering a wide variety of donuts, beverages, and baked products.
9. Haldirams
A good weekend to me is having my favorite chole-bhature and rasmalai at Haldirams. A common household name over years, Haldirams was founded in 1937 as a retail sweets and namkeen shop in Rajasthan. Some of the items include Soan Papdi, Cookies, and Pani Puri, among others. Haldiram restaurants can be found in nearly every city.
8. KFC
A couple of years ago, my best friend and I went to try a zinger box at KFC. We were not sure how it was going to taste, but even today,  whenever we meet we make sure to have a taste of it. Their menu includes Hot & Crispy Chicken, Fiery Grilled Bucket, Chicken Zinger, Krushers, Rice Bowlz, and 5-in-1 Meal Box among others; they also offer a vegetarian menu.
7. Barista
Espresso Italiano is my second favorite brew after filter coffee.  Founded in 2000, it has over 275+ espresso bars all over India. The second-largest coffee chain in India after Cafe Coffee Day,  it delivers an Italian coffee experience in a relaxed environment; try the non-milk versions as well.
6. Burger King
Just before I turned 20, I tried Burger King’s veg wraps, which were an absolute revelation. Launched in 2014 in India, the Brand offers a mouth-watering range of burgers and meals. My most favorite items of the brand are veg whopper, wrap, king paneer melt burger, among others.
5. Pizza Hut
My sister loves pizza and tries new restaurants every month to explore what's new; however, her constant dine-in place for years has been Pizza Hut. Famous for its Italian-American cuisine, it serves pizza, pasta, side dishes, and desserts. Our favorites are the country feast, paneer soya supreme and tandoori paneer. Recently, we also tried  the new Momo Mia Pizza- keep the innovation going guys!
4. JumboKing
I was pleasantly surprised when I visited Delhi Metro and found a JumboKing store. All my friends from Mumbai had been talking about it and when I finally tried its Nachos Burger, I found it worth the hype. Launched in 2001 in Mumbai, it is regarded as one of the biggest vegetarian QSR players in India and offers a variety of Indian burgers, wraps, shakes, flavors such as Nachos, Macaroni, and Cheeseburger, Spicy Mexican.

3. Subway
I’ve never been a fan of ‘healthy’ sandwiches (who wants health if mom's not around!). But Subway’s veggie delight is something I think everyone should try. A ‘go-to’ place for people who crave a sandwich, it sells submarine sandwiches, salads, and beverages. The Signature wrap is also an amazing choice.
2. Dominos-
I remember knowing Dominos from its famous 30-minute express delivery, long before Zomato and Swiggy were in the game. My favorite pizzas from the brand are  Farmhouse with cheese burst, peppy paneer, and double cheese Margherita among others. Also, they keep providing exciting offers throughout the year. So much so, that it has become synonymous with home delivery.

1. McDonald's
McDonalds has been around forever; and Indians call it MacD for some reason. I have lost count of the number of times a friend has said, "lets meet at MacD." Famous for its burgers and fries, their menu includes wraps, desserts, chicken products, milkshakes, and breakfast items. McAloo Tikki Burger, Dosa Masala Burger and the Veg Maharaja Mac, are some of my  favorite items on their menu.

CHAAT DE PEANUT
Salty, spicy, tangy, crunchy, and ridiculously easy to make... This Peanut Chaat is the simplest cold appetizer to make, taking only 10 minutes to prepare. It goes well with a cup of chai or a cold beer!

This is one of my all-time favorite chaats! It takes regular 'ol peanuts and infuses them with spicy, tangy Indian flavors for a quick snack. It's the simplest to make and only requires a little dicing prep with the vegetables before it's ready to go!
Some people even call it a peanut chaat salad because it's generally healthy and can even be used as a weight-loss snack. The fat in the peanuts keeps you full and satisfied.
There will be no frying, chutney making, or use of processed foods with this. Peanut Chaat is a simple and flavorful dish that is ideal for serving as a snack or appetizer at a party.
This vibrant, colorful appetizer takes only 10-15 minutes to prepare! Peanut chaat, also known as chakna in India, is sometimes served as a snack in bars.
Peanuts contain 19 vitamins and minerals, many of which are beneficial to the heart. Peanuts have 8 grams of protein per ounce! Because peanuts are so nutritious, we never use other nuts for chaat in my house. Chaat, for example, would never contain pistachios or walnuts.
In its most basic form, peanut chaat is a simple mixture of unsalted, raw peanuts, diced vegetables, a few spices, and lemon juice. In India, there are several versions that are served street-style.
WHAT EXACTLY IS INDIAN CHAAT?
"Chaat" refers to an entire category of Indian snacks and is a popular street food in South Asia. They're the most popular vegetarian starter at any Indian restaurant. It hits every flavor and texture profile that makes it craveable: sweet, spicy, tangy, salty, and crunchy.

haat is essentially a quick snack that you can make at any time using ingredients you already have in your pantry. Typically, family and friends gather around a tablescape of various chaats and a cup of freshly brewed chai to gossip. "Let's talk over chaat," as the saying goes.
Samosa Chaat, Papdi Chaat, Sev Puri Chaat, Fruit Chaat, Peanut Chaat, Aloo Tikki Chaat, Gol Gappa or Pani Puri, Raj Kachori, Bhel Puri, Dahi Vada... the list is endless.
AN EXECUTION FORMULA FOR ALL CHAATS
To make any type of snack, there is a basic formula for all chaat, which consists of five layers. In India, there are numerous regional variations with different names, but the majority of combinations remain more or less the same.

THE FOUNDATION. Chaat's base is typically something crispy or crunchy, or it focuses on a single ingredient such as peanuts, fruits, or fried potatoes. Samosa, gol gappa, matri, crispy rice puffs, thicker sevs, papdi, and other carb-heavy dishes work well as a base.
THE SEASONINGS. The best part about chaat is when all of the sweet, spicy, and tangy chutneys and sauces combine at the bottom! Tangy imli (tamarind) chutney, cilantro-mint chutney, dahi, and lemon juice are common sauces.
THE SPICES. To enhance the flavors of chaat, a few aromatic masalas are always added. Chaat masala is without a doubt the most important masala blend for any chaat dish, providing a healthy dose of umami. Other notable ingredients include roasted cumin, kala namak, and red chili pepper.
THE CRUNCHIES. A crunch is required to balance out the sauces. Sev (deep-fried chickpea flour noodles), potato chips, peanuts, roasted chana (chickpeas), and namkeens are some popular crunchies (savory snacks).
THE HIGHLIGHTS. Toppings are typically a mix of raw fruits and vegetables that can be mixed and matched depending on what is available. Red onions, tomatoes, chilis, cilantro, mint, pomegranates, roasted potatoes, chickpeas, and avocado are popular toppings. Fruits like watermelon and apples aren't allowed unless you're making fruit chaat.

FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) is an autonomous body that is established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India to monitor and govern the food business in India. FSSAI is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety & ensures the food products undergo quality checks.
HISTORY
On 5th August 2011, Indian Former Union Minister Dr. Anubumani Ramadoss established FSSAI under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (FSS Act) which was operationalized in year 2006. FSSAI consisting of a chairperson and 22 members is responsible for setting standards for food products, so that there is a department or one body to monitor and clears the confusion from the minds of consumers, traders, manufacturers, and investors.
Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India is the Administrative Ministry of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The following are the statutory powers that the FSS Act, 2006 gives to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India
Framing of regulations to lay down food safety standards
Laying down guidelines for accreditation of laboratories for food testing
Providing scientific advice and technical support to the Central Government
Contributing to the development of international technical standards in food
Collecting and collating data regarding food consumption, contamination, emerging risks, etc.
Disseminating information and promoting awareness about food safety and nutrition in India
It is responsible for the registering and licensing of the Food Business Operators (FBO) in India, and it lays down the rules and regulation for running the food business in India.
Who need FSSAI Registration or License?
Every food business operator (FBO) involved in the manufacturing, processing, storage distribution and sale of food products must compulsorily obtain FSSAI Registration or License.

𝓦𝓱𝓪𝓽’𝓼 𝓨𝓸𝓾𝓻 𝓖𝓸-𝓣𝓸 𝓒𝓸𝓶𝓯𝓸𝓻𝓽 𝓕𝓸𝓸𝓭?
Comfort food is anything that holds a sentimental value for someone besides, maybe being high-calorie or high in carbs! But it differs with different people, check out my amazing answers here.
If you search 'comfort food' on the web, it will define it as any food that has a nostalgic value to someone and might be categorised by high-caloric or high carbs level or simply a quick and easy preparation. But a comfort food can be different to different people all across the world. While one might love to sit cozy with a bowl of mac and cheese, the other could find solace in a chocolate bar. Honestly, who can resist a jar of hazelnut chocolate too? Oh did we mention a pizza oozing with cheese? And not to forget the variety of Indian food that can be equally soothing as anything else. From chaat papdi, gol gappa and samosa to momos and even biryani, we can't help but simply slurp at the mere mention.
So while slurping on such irresistible dishes on the lunch table, these are my go-to comfort food of all seasons.
What I really want on a day like today - too dark wet and rainy even to want to go out, is a good hit of carbs. Today I have actually got some cold roast chicken to eat up and I’m going to make some sweet potato oven fries and there’s some nice fresh green veg in the fridge to make me feel healthy!
I’d also happily tuck into a big bowl of pasta, maybe with my own home-made pesto. That filling is also great inside cannelloni and covered with a cheese sauce.
Good old pie, mash and mushy peas would be nice - I’d choose a chicken, leek and mushroom pie. Buttered cabbage or carrots would also be nice on the side.
Popcorn, cracker chips, dry cereal (I weigh out a serving size; I don’t consume it by handfuls out of the box), individually packaged ice cream treats.
Cola. Pepsi by preference, but Coke or RC will do.
Hamburger. I make this every week or so and have since I was a kid, I think the first dish I learned to cook. It’s what I think of when I think “comfort food.”
Picture a freshly baked pizza bursting with cheese and mouth-watering toppings! Pizza can be quite a mood-changer like nothing else and we can't agree more. Top it with some crispy veggies or succulent meat; you can even make mini pizzas at home whenever you feel like. And once you try a homemade pizza, there's no going back.
Come rainy seasons and your kitchen pantry will be stocked with ready-to-make soup packets or stew ingredients because there's nothing more satisfying than a piping hot bowl of soup to warm the soul during the rainy chill. Be it a simple clear soup or a mutton stew, it makes for a perfect comfort food when you are craving something wholesome, delicious, light and easy!
Let's admit it, chocolate is everyone's weakness. And brownie makes it all the more better! Be it warm or cold, with or without ice-cream, chocolate brownie in any form makes any mood, day, meal all the more better.

To answer my own question: my ‘go-to’ comfort food depends on how I’m feeling – sometimes I need salty potato chips (crisps) and other times I need chocolate/sweet things

01/4Golgappa is more than just a street food for India
He picked up a round and flaky ‘crepe’, made out of ‘sooji’ or semolina and with a gentle prod of his thumb, carved a hole in the center of it. Next came a mixture of boiled potatoes, onion, and chickpeas, which was thrust inside expertly in the blink of an eye. The lid of a big steel utensil was removed, which revealed a green colored water with ‘boondi’ floating on top of it. With a swift action, he dipped the crepe in the water and placed it on the small paper bowl, which I was holding in my hand while salivating. I picked up the ensemble and pushed the whole thing in my mouth in one go. Boom! The taste riot that exploded in my palate was such a flavorful experience that it created a space of its own in my mind and memories.

02/4It reigns the sub-continent
The vivid picture described above is the ‘Spiritus Mundi’, or the collective memory of all Indians when it comes to ‘Golgappa’, which easily qualifies as India’s beloved street food. The word ‘Golgappa’ can be broken down into two to get an essence of the dish: ‘Gol’ refers to the crispy shell, and ‘gappa’ refers to the eating process, since Golgappa is eaten one at a time. Golgappa’s name varies depending on different regions in India. In Haryana it is known as ‘Paani Patashi; in Madhya Pradesh ‘Fulki’; in Uttar Pradesh ‘Pani ke Batashe’ or ‘Padake’; in Assam ‘Phuska’ or ‘Puska’; ‘Gup-chup’ in parts of Odisha and ‘Phuchka’ in Bihar, Nepal, Jharkhand, Bengal and Chhattisgarh. Consisting of a round hollow ‘puri’, filled with a mixture of flavored water, tamarind chutney, potato, onion or chickpeas, Golgappa has its origins in the Indian subcontinent.

03/4The story of its origin
The story of Golgappa has two versions to it. One is the mythological one and the other, historical. The mythological story of the Golgappa could be traced to the ‘Mahabharata’. As per the tale, when a newly-wedded Draupadi came home, she was given a task by her mother-in-law Kunti. As the Pandavas were living in exile, they had to manage with scarce resources. Kunti wanted to test if her new daughter-in-law would be able to manage with them . So she gave Draupadi some leftover vegetables and just enough wheat dough to make one puri. She instructed her to make food that would satisfy the hunger of all her sons. It is believed that this was when the new bride invented an early variation of Golgappa. Historically, it is believed that ‘Phulki’, believed to be the precursor to Golgappa, first originated in Magadh. However, the person who invented it is lost in the pages of history. Though these could be claimed as the precursors to Golgappa, the ingredients used might be very different. Two important ingredients of Golgappa are potato and chili and both came to India 300-400 years ago. Prominent food historian, Pushpesh Pant is of the view that Golgappa originated around Uttar Pradesh and Bihar about 100-125 years ago. According to him, it is possible that Golgappa was made out of Raj-Kachori. In between other delicacies, someone made a small ‘puri’ and ate it.

Golgappa is such a dish that has a great scope of experimentation and innovation. In bars of metro cities, a variation of it is served with Scotch or wine instead of spicy water. To impress and woo foreigners, people have come up with a dish called ‘Pani Puri Tequila Shot’! All this has made the dish immortal and even though its history is complicated and questionable, there is no doubt that Golgappa brings the spicy and tangy side of India together.

Car Craft’s Top 25 Picks From the 2017 Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals
For many attendees, the annual Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals has become a yearly pilgrimage. Filling up the Stephens convention center in Rosemont, Illinois, minutes from O’Hare Airport, people travel from literally around the globe to be here. For most of the year leading up to it, managing MCACN member Bob Ashton is out locating a few great cars to invite. Well, more than a few; a lot of really great cars.
There are no bad cars at MCACN. The best of the best originals, the best historical examples, the best modern and accurate restorations, and some of the best stories all come together. Bob made a great statement in the annual program about how our cars erase the political, religious, color lines and gender lines that fissure modern culture. As the unifier in these somewhat turbulent times, there is a level appreciation for the finished and found, the rarest and “realest”, and more. But then Ashton goes and finds area managers from every interest and discipline who get cars for every category’s subcategory.
There were many special groups of cars from 1967, 1972, Formula Firebirds, Kar-Kraft Fords. There are Saturday morning unveiling of the latest restorations just like the original new car shows used to do. There are seminars and concerts, judged awards, and special displays. This is the greatest musclecar show on the planet. Period. You need all two days, always the weekend before Thanksgiving, to see it. So hopefully you enjoy these picks, but you really should come next year. Oh, and Ashton, you owe me a pair of shoes…
Car Craft Giveaway Car: 1969 Swinger in the Barn Finds section Tom Ellie brought his find from St. Petersburg Florida in, the original 1969 “Swinger” 340 Dart GTS. Really long-time readers will recall this machine from almost 50 years ago, when staffers like Terry Cook built this thing. That it survived so intact and in its original custom paint is pretty incredible, and it would be a hard decision whether to leave it be or restore it. Back in 1969, the Dodge was given away at the NHRA World Finals in Dallas to contest-drawing winner 16-year old William Outlaw (yes, correct). His mother accepted it for him, as his father Odis was over in Vietnam at the time.
Coolest Ex Car Craft Cover Car: 1970 Hemi Challenger This real Hemi Challenger showed up on our cover back in October 2013, after it had been stored but undriven for decades. Here it is, brought back to like-new condition by restorer Ward Gappa (left). The owner, Lowell McAdam (center), was very happy to have acquired this car, which has 98% of its original sheet-metal, a completely original Hemi driveline, and excellent documentation.
Nicest Engine without a Car: Malcolm Durham ZL1 With a lot of first-gen Camaros on hand, this engine was one of the most notorious. East coast racing hero Malcom Durham, known back in the day as the “D.C. Lip,” was a prominent player in the FX, Funny Car, and early Pro Stock wars with his Strip Blazer Chevrolets. It is believed he raced a blue 1969 COPO Camaro that is now known in the hobby as ZL1 #42, and Jeff Stranak has the rebuilt engine on a stand on display.
Nicest Car Without A Body: 1953 Corvette Cutaway You want to talk about cool Corvettes, this one is an engineering sample showcasing details for the newly-released Corvette from when GM’s huge Motorama displays were happening. This is the lowest Corvette chassis number in existence, and when owner Ed Foss had it restored, a half-body was added to make it into a cutaway. Yes, it is a six-cylinder, but let’s be honest- who wouldn’t want to find this thing stashed away somewhere no matter what kind of cars you were into. And it drives, too.
Coolest Old School Racing Hero: Tom Tignanelli Some people will remember Tom Tignanelli’s Detroit-based “UFO” drag cars- mainly Funny Cars that ran in the modified division on gasoline. Collectors Clark and Collene Rand had Tom’s old 1965 altered wheelbase Plymouth on display following its fresh restoration, and Tignanelli himself also came to MCACN this year with a load of experimental parts like titanium torsion bars and stories about his work in Chrysler’s legendary “skunkworks” the Woodward Garage.
Nicest One-of-None Car: 1967 Hemi Belvedere 1 There are exceptions to every rule, and this 1967 Belvedere 1 with Hemi power certainly fits the bill. In 1967, the Hemi option for Plymouth was specifically noted to only be available in the GTX. However, it is documented that four were installed in the basic Belvedere 1 model for drag racers like Judy Lilly. This car, however, was not raced, and features 100% of its original paint, very original interior, and original Hemi driveline. Now owned by Frank Karabetsos, it was in the Vintage Certification program.
Best Collection Overall: First Gen F-bodies The choice was a given based on the 1967-1969 best-selling model. Selection was a challenge when you consider that while both the 1967-1969 Camaros and Firebirds are plentiful, choosing ones that will fit into a couple of rows of “the best” meant hard choices. In fact, most of the Z28s were in another area. So here is Bill Jenkins Indy Nationals-winning L78-powered Super Stocker, the Penske-Donohue Trans Am champion, Pete Estes’ one-off 1968 Z-28 convertible (shown), and a row of documented 427-CI supercars from Dana, Nickey, and Yenko. The Firebirds were highly-optioned Trans Ams and deluxe models, led off by Truman Fields’ notable NHRA record setter barely seen in the left foreground. The guitars were used as eye candy around several display areas.
Most Expensive Car not in Attendance A certain 1970 Hemi Challenger Convertible was drawing a lot of comments from people. This picture shows a 1970 Challenger R/T Hemi convertible whose asked-for number was a big $1,795,000. They were accepting trades for other cars, but we were fresh out of prewar Bugattis…
Coolest Show Car to drive for fun-1967 Camaro SS This car had the largest accumulation of trophies at this year’s event. It is all painted up nice and shiny in bright orange and has a chromed blower sticking through the hood like some ‘80s trailer queen. Well, this thing goes when Duane Waldrop hits the loud pedal on this car, as seen by his handout. The car runs on E85, sort of like an alcohol funny car.
Best Musclecar Equalizer Event: The Pure Stock Drags This trio of monsters is part of the action when the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race happens in Michigan each summer, and they all look the part of stock street vehicles. Seen here are Steve Hodges’ 1970 4-4-2, Dan Kruger’s 1968 Hemi Charger, and Dave Hemker’s 1970 Buick Stage 1.
Biggest Muscle Wagon: 1964 Impala 409 Under restoration by Keith Curry is this 1964 Impala station wagon. While you can hot-rod these things, nothing extra is needed when it first came down the assembly line with a 425-HP 409 dual-quad engine and factory four speed driveline. Most of these things got crushed, so we are looking forward to seeing this one when its finished.
Best E-Body Shaker: The Swiss Connection The Wellborn Musclecar Museum sponsored this display of Shaker Mopars, and this restored 1971 Challenger was making its first public appearance in the USA. Ordered new by a woman from Switzerland, this is a heavily-optioned 1971 Hemi / four-speed, with a formal rear window, spoilers, and colored rubber bumpers. Despite all this, the car ended up being road raced in Europe with a front air dam and wide wheel flares. So if you think running the Matterhorn on a Ducati would be a handful, trying this with a nose-heavy Hemi machine required skill and a little madness.
Coolest team effort: Ford Drag Team display Organized by noted collector Bob Perkins, this was likely the largest group of cars from the original Ford Drag Team assembled since 1971, and certainly the largest in a show arena. Two 427 SOHC Pro Stock Mustangs, two Cobra Jets Mustangs , the rare 428 Torino that debuted and is seen here, a “Going Thing” promotional Mustang, and a tribute Torino plus Bob’s well-known glass house trailer full of rare memorabilia. Perkins is second from right here, and Torino owner Dave Steine is seen at the left.
Coolest Mustang: Shelby GT500 Paxton Supercharged Kevin and Winona Suydam had two very impressive cars to unveil, a 1968 “drag package” Yenko Camaro and this beast that most people never knew existed, the 1969 GT500KR experimental test car equipped with a Paxton supercharger. Though a handful was built in the GT350 racing era, this one bolted atop a 428 is incredible, and the paint is a legitimate special-order color. Kevin stands with the screaming yellow zonker after the unveiling cover came off on Saturday morning.
Coolest Nifty Fifties Car: 1958 Packard More supercharged cars were in the Studebaker invitational this year, following up on the blown Larks from 2016 with a group of late 1950s speedsters. One car that really drew attention was this very rare 1958 Packard Hawk, which came from the Studebaker factory that year with a McCulloch supercharger. If you are not familiar with this design, which featured EXTERIOR leather armrests, don’t feel bad; only about 900 were built. This was the last year to ever see the legendary Packard nameplate.
Coolest Mod Wife: Sharon Jones We sort of did this for fun, as a number of the ladies dress up in ‘60s fashions for the event. Sharon and her husband Ron had their deluxe 1969 Coronet 500 in the South Oak Dodge display. This car had been dragged out of a hometown field in rough shape and Ron constructed it as an OEM-looking rebuild for her, adding a Mercedes electric sunroof and a Hurst four-speed shifter through the console to the automatic trans. With a nod to hipster fashion, Sharon dressed up as part of the 1969 advertising campaign, which was likely approved by Dodge Sales VP “Crusher” Bob McCurry and his he-man crew over lunch-time martinis in late 1968. We were digging it…
Coolest Corvette for a Car Craft guy: 1965 L88 experimental This being the Muscle Car & CORVETTE Nationals, there are always exceptional ‘Vettes on display, and this was one or our favorites. Looking suspiciously like a body in white rarecar project, we learned it was just that, and for none other than legendary developer Zora Arkus-Duntov. He used this car to test big-block racing packages, including the very-first L72 427 and L88 427 extreme racing development. It had a string of first-ever notations a mile long, and was modified regularly between 1965 to 1967 when the so-called C2 Stingray models went out of production.
Best-known Celebrity Musclecar Enthusiast: Jason Line 1970 Buick GS Most people know Jason Line from the NHRA Pro Stock class, but not so many know that he has a wheels-up 1970 Buick GS he runs in Stock Eliminator. A while back, he bought a rough-but-rare real 1970 GS Stage 1 convertible and chose this event to debut it to the public after a lengthy restoration. He is seen toward the back of the group here with a big crew of his restoration guys and their better halves. Why Buicks? We know Line understands power-to-weight ratios, and 455-CI Buicks had the lightest long-blocks coming out of the OEMs in the era. That they are timeless in style doesn’t hurt, either.
Coolest AMC: 1969 Scrambler by MASCAR  The crew from Costa Mesa states they have had some unhappy Kenosha campers as word on this project came out – a real Scrambler converted seriously enough to clock 8.50 specs. Truth be told, what remained of the original car likely needed to be rebodied; it was cut on that badly. So they built a hot 401 engine, lifted the scoop a couple inches, blended the Group 1 and Group 2 paint schemes (you know what that is about, AMC dudes) in metallic paint, and bolted on a deck wing to prevent flight at 160+ MPH. The result was a head-turner even in a sea of the rarest musclecars on planet earth.
Most Valuable Available Racecar: 1965 Landy’s Dodge Mecum’s big area has been used to showcase cars for their upcoming events, especially their season opener in Kissimmee, Florida. The racecars collected by Nick Smith will be a highlight there next January, and for the first time, the restored Landy’s Dodge will be offered in public. The king of the 1965 “funny cars,” Dick Landy wheel-stood this Dodge to infamy, and this is the best survivor of the Chrysler program. Oh, you’re a Chevy guy? How about the 1963 Z11 Impala of Frank Sanders, the most original of those cars, and Fords, which were Smith’s personal favorites, will include not one but two original Gas Ronda Mustangs!
Best Survivor Oldsmobile: 1971 Cutlass Dave Belk is a pretty experienced car collector who got wind of a 1971 Olds Cutlass Supreme convertible owned by a woman 20 miles from his Iowa home base. The well-optioned car turned out to be everything hoped for, the equivalent of a 4-4-2 in classy trim with a 350/four-speed/Anti-Spin-type rear end, and less than 40,000 original miles. Carefully cared for since day one by Lonna Rea and her late husband, this silver beauty had single-family ownership until 2017. It is never modified, a cruiser not a bruiser, from the waning days of Dr. Olds performance medicine show. So Belk chose to bring it up to MCACN for Vintage Certification, where specialty judging found it scoring a Legend rating at a very high 92.5% originality.
Best Restored Oldsmobile: 1970 4-4-2 Oldsmobile This was a hard choice, as there were a lot of them here. The Olds we chose was just redone by Magnum Auto for Jeff and Joanna Stolowski, a 1971 tri-color (blue, black top, white interior) convertible with 445 cubes of W-30 under the hood and many options. Its emotional unveiling for original owner Kathy Maddison, who had owned the car with her late husband Keith from new until 2015, was a highlight for the crowd who was on hand as the restored car was revealed to the public for the first time.
Best Oddball Barn Find: Early Logghe Streamliner We will admit, we are always blown away by the stuff that shows up in Ryan Brutt’s Barn Finds and Rare Gems display. There were very cool cars in 2017, like COPO Chevys with documentation, vintage muscle trucks and even an old funny car, but one car that took everybody by surprise was this 1959-era Logghe Stamping Company streamliner. According to research still being conducted into this car’s origins, it was one of only two sports-car chassis built by the brothers for a possible road race effort that were instead pressed into drag strip duty. This may have been because Detroit Dragway was host to the NHRA Nationals in 1959 and 1960. Of course, Logghe later helped Mercury ignite the funny car revolution. Saved from a Motor City-area junkyard, Dragrace Relics LLC, owned by Clark and Collene Rand, will direct its eventual restoration.
Best Oddball Cruiser: 1967 Boss Bird Randy Birchfield built and displayed this 1967 Thunderbird, which obviously has had some upgrades. The engine is a Cobra Jet-type 428, complete with Shaker scoop. The car uses a C6 automatic, features a deck wing, and has flawless “highway star” deep purple paint. The clean execution includes custom Boss Bird lettering. Not something you see every day…
And Best Car of the Event (in you author’s opinion): 1970 RT/SE Hemi Challenger It started with that super-cool Gator-Grain roof and survivor appearance. This Challenger R/T SE with its 426 Hemi engine, four-speed transmission and 4.10 Dana rear is pretty cool, and it was highly optioned. But I needed a story, and this car had it. Original owner, the late Godfrey Qualls, was in the 82nd Airborne and bought this car after a tour of duty for Uncle Sam. He later served the city of Detroit Police as a police officer for 37 years. He ordered the N96 Shaker, and was not happy when his custom $5,272.00 factory build showed up at the dealership without it, and was further told he could not get one on a Dodge, period. So he sued the company and eventually won, getting the parts from Chrysler for the conversion. As you can see, he never put that design on. When off-duty, Officer Qualls established a noteworthy reputation as the baddest Hemi car on the east side of Detroit, parking it during the mid-1970s gasoline crisis. His son Greg and their family brought to MCACN after Bob Ashton, a native of the area, found out this ghost still existed in solid unrestored shape, with dealership plastic seat covers intact and every piece of imaginable factory paperwork. There were a sea of Shaker cars in pristine shape at this year’s event, and a lot of other very worthy cars, but a cop from Detroit with a Street Hemi whose reputation echoed to Woodward and a car that still exists today, unrestored and with his family? Yep, that’s MCACN…

If there is one quirky pub to be, one which follows no conventional rules in its blending of cocktails and crafting of meals – CraftBar it is.  A place to hang out at after work hours or to chill out during weekends, typically for those located at Mumbai’s central corporate hotspot – B.K.C.   A startup set-up which comes equipped with unique selling points that sets it apart from its competitors.   Its owner, the ever hospitable Sagar Chakraborty, breaks away from traditional food patterns having applied his own ingenious art in designing the restaurant’s menu.  This is my creed too, to deviate from time-honoured cooking/serving models, like eating shrimps from a gol gappa or sipping a cocktail from a gola or devouring a spirit infused melon!

As I stepped into this gastro pub, the first thing that I caught sight of was an assortment of colourful bottles which apparently are done in what is termed barley art.
Barley art which has its roots in Indian culture has been selected as its thematic design.  So it is but natural to see the pub’s walls adorned with circular embroidered frames conforming to this art.  Naturally, the restaurant’s menu is printed in a similar fashion (see pics).

Piped upbeat music plays in the background making this the last place to want to have a heart to heart chat.  If you do, you won’t be heard.
At the far end of the restaurant IPL matches get screened, attracting cricket aficionados.   More excitement and less audibility.  Not my cuppa tea.
Come Thursday evenings, you will see (or should I say hear) the town’s self-proclaimed singers assemble to sing along on Karaoke – both Bollywood ishtyle and Hollywood.
For those who dig olde worlde music, Fridays has been picked to be their Retro Night targetted to start with effect from May this year.
There’s nothing like a ‘live band’ that performs inside the restaurant that makes this place come alive!  Hear that celebrity singers are being geared up to be brought on board soon.
What is CraftBar’s singular attraction you might ask?  Its Sunday brunch which allows you unlimited food from a set menu.  Designed for those whose mission is to live to eat.

The brunch constitutes a whole collection – of 2 breakfast items, a soup, 4 types each of vegetarian and non-vegetarian starters,  a large salad station, 1 non-veg and 2 vegetarian mains plus 2 types of desserts.  @ a mere Rs 799 per head and guzzle unlimited drink @ Rs 1,299!
Didn’t you just go back to check if you read right?  I bet you did.  What better incentive than unlimited food and drink at as nominal a cost!  Now, if that didn’t catch your attention, you probably need a doc’s prescription!

Having provided a broad description of the pub, I’d like to get started with an illustration of my very first and experiential tryst at this gastro pub.  The first dish came in the form of a Caribbean style Pirates Pepper Soup which is a milky, peppery and banana-sweet potato inspired soup.  Almost Thai-like in taste owing to its coconut content perhaps.  Velvety on the palate, no black eye whatsover setting me wondering about its Pirates connection.
Some light Glassy Classy salad with cherry tomatoes, dry fruits, dark olives, citrus fruits and lettuce dresssed in vinaigrette to accompany.  For the diet conscious.  Looks prettier than it tastes.

This was followed by Paneer Tikka Tarts which came trundling on wheels.  Not the Formula One types but one served on a cart like tray which makes picture-happy people happier.
It tastes cheesy, I mean not in the trashy sense but like cheese.  Small enough to pop into the average mouth. An eager one to pop in a couple in quick succession and without guilt.

The Pav Bhaji Bruschetta it is called, which comes with pav bhaji topping over baguette slices to give it an Italian twist.
A creative fusion play that makes the die-hard vegetarian Mumbaikar happy to go the Italian way.
Just wish there were fewer chopped onions over the bruschetta topping.  Leaves no room for a close-up peck :-)

For the hard-nosed non-vegetarians as I, there was comfort in chicken tandoori momos which taste close to wood fired kebabs.
What goes into it, I learnt from the chef, is minced chicken and veggies steamed in typical momo style which is then dipped in flour and oven grilled.
Unfussy and delicious!  Tops my list of favourites.
How could one forget those prawn gol gappas!  Yes, you heard right.  Fried prawns stuffed into crisp home-made puris sat invitingly upon a shot glasses filled with sol kadi.  How do you eat it?  Just pick up a puri, crunch into it and wash it down with the kadi which is nothing but a digestive.  I didn’t venture pouring the sol kadi into the puris and mouthing them whole.
While the waiter at our table did his best to explain the food on an lazy afternoon, I suspect it could be hard to keep pace with the evening crowd.  Waiting is an area that needs rephrasing and polishing.

Well, that’s a full measure of food art for now.  Let’s get to the fundamentals of this gastro pub.

No visit to any pub is complete without indulging in spirits or cocktails.  CrafBar, in particular, is known to  attract its customers for its craftily mixed blends.  For me it had to be the vodka gola which is what drew me to this pub in the first place.  Tera Kya Hoga Kaliya is its name.  The concoction wasn’t chaotic as I believed it be, in fact I thought it was a remarkably good idea to have a crushed ice gola sitting in a kala khatta vodka of a drink.  The gola has dual benefits.  For one, it reminds you of those good old picnic days on the beach when you would happily slurp gola after gola.  Or if you didn’t feel young enough to remember those picnics or perhaps didn’t go to any, you could at least let the gola cool your drink.  Blended with vodka it is bound to revive you into a gola-sucking-youth a few pegs later.  Priced @ Rs 335 per drink.

If you happen to be a coffee fan, you are likely to enjoy its coffee liqueur cocktail served in a chocolate shot glass, with whole coffee beans.  Don’t Angry Me – a funky name – made angrier with some dark rum.  I took a sip of this one and let the rest take a miss as the coffee beans interfered in the channeling of the liquid inside.  I bit on a bean as it popped into the mouth while sipping the liqueur and then I wondered why I hadn’t swallowed it whole!

Not all coffee liqueurs here come with trespassing beans.  There’s the Irish Cream which came as saviour but was a mite too sweet for my liking.  Aata Maji Satakli, whose coffee powder aroma is intensely reinvigorating.  Sweetened with condensed milk and spiked with whiskey.  Priced @ Rs 350 per cocktail.

And then came the biggest thunderbolt of it all, KICK.  This translates to a tequila shot in an ice glass!  A fantastic herbed flavoured drink that couldn’t have been a better bet to give an ice glass company but not for long as the meltdown begins.  Kickass.  Priced @ Rs 395 per shot.
Smoke Valley is the name of CraftBar’s bar station.  The drinks range from wine, beer, aperitifs to single malts, blended whiskey and so on.  Beer starts at Rs 135 while malts @ Rs 400, blends @ Rs 270, cocktails @ Rs 345, Sangria pitchers @ Rs 1,260 onwards.  Refer to its menu for more options and pricing.

Fun all the way, not surprising then that the pub’s chef and mixologist are of Indigo fame!
As if this wasn’t enough of a surprise tour, there came a brown surprise at the end of the meal.  Brownie sandwich with gajar halwa, a sensation that can take your breath away.  Learnt that it’s a popular choice.

In summary, this is a great place to indulge in eccentric spirits/mocktails/cocktails, devour idiosyncratic fusion food with Indian undertones, sing/listen to music and watch your favourite game even if you have to shout to be heard.  A handful and a quite a mouthful!
