ATLA (zukkaâŠ.) au where everything is mostly the same except that the phrase âfriend of the Avatarâ is a euphemism for being gay, a la the phrase friend of Dorothy
(the phrase started towards the start of the 100 year war because in this universe Avatar Roku was some flavor of gay, then Sozin canonically banned gay marriage after their situationship went downhill. so people had to be more subtle about communicating their identities, something something something, the phrase became semi-commonplace throughout the fire nation and later the earth kingdom. maybe it started even earlier because of bi queen kyoshi. who knows!)
miscommunication and self-discovery ensues throughout the events of ATLA:
early on into his banishment and search for the avatar, Zuko runs into someone who casually mentions that theyâre a âfriend of the Avatarâ and heïżœïżœïżœs immediately like âTHE AVATAR IS ALIVE? WHERE ARE THEY. TELL MEâ
âŠhe learns a new phrase that day! perhaps he didnât even know gay people existed until that awkward encounter (bc sheltered fire nation royal.) maybe he does some self reflection at this point, or perhaps he puts off his sexuality crisis in favor of his avatar hunting mission. whoâs to say?
(the next time he hears someone say theyâre âa friend of the avatarâ he asks if theyâre gay or if they actually know the avatar. you know, just in case they actually do.
âŠ.and the next time after that, too.
but after that he catches on pretty quickly that, no, itâs REALLY just a turn of phrase, and he does not repeat the mistake again.)
+ early into the series events sokka runs into some confusion when he mentions to a stranger that heâs a friend of the avatar while aang isnât aroundâ
sokka: hey so uhh iâm actually a friend of the avatar⊠think i can get a discount for that??
kindly ally shopkeeper: oh! i love that for you!! you know, i have a cousin whoâs gay, real swell guy. anyways about the discountâ
book one sokka, canonically sexist and with perhaps a fragile masculinity: what wait a sec, IM NOT GAY??????
shopkeeper: oh thatâs okay, you donât have to explain yourself or put a label on it to me (:
(sokka does in fact get a discount.)
he walks back to katara who was waiting for him and overheard the whole conversation, and she says âyou know, sokka, itâs fine if you like boys.â sokka responds as youâd expect he would at this time.
(some amount of time later, sokka comes up to katara and aang very nervously and says âhey guys. i think i might. um. be a friend of the Avatar.â
and aang, confused but enthusiastic, goes âaww buddy, weâre already friends!!!!â)
at some point theyâre fighting Zuko and during a back-and-forth exchange, Sokka proclaims âi wonât let you hurt him, the Avatar is my friend!â or something to that effect
Zuko, who has learned from his past mistakes in misconstruing this phrase, says âlove is love. but your sexuality will not stop me from capturing the Avatarâ
#i have brainworms sorry.#zukka#atla#a:tla#avatar the last airbender#long post#god. sorry.#zuko as the edward elric meme: I See No Difference. Love Is Love#sorry if this makes light of the actual historical implication of the phrase#i am just here for a fun time

The fun part about this event is people who aren't into digging into bizarre and fun historical topics finding out about two of my favorite philosophical things and that's:
A. The Cave Allegory
and
B. Pythagoras' wild ass cult about numbers. Y'all, this man got major beef with the number 3 like there's no tomorrow. Also beans.
#reverse 1999#the prisoners in the cave#i love this game and i hope they continue to add in more historical events that maybe even I'm not aware of#it oddly engages you to look into fun historical facts about society during that time as well different cultural contexts in that era

Not to get pedantic (oh who am i kidding thatâs most of this blog) but I am genuinely fascinated by the potential applications of the established canon in HoO and TOA that the gods canonically have both historic and regional forms, and can appear as specific versions of those forms and have kids of those specific forms, which influence what powers the kid has/what pantheon they fall under/etc etc (and also the implication that demigods can be born under multiple forms of a singular deity). This is somewhat backed up even earlier in the first series when weâre told that Percy has earthquake powers because of his father being Poseidon âThe Earthshakerâ (which is Mycenaean Poseidon) - which could also tie into why Percy generally takes leadership roles, is hopping in and out of the Underworld a lot, and is apparently particularly powerful for even just a Big 3 kid, since all that would line up with Mycenaean Poseidon being generally put at the head of the pantheon and also being a chthonic deity.
Now this gets really interesting when we start looking at deities being combined and conflated, because a.) the Romans werenât the only ones doing that and b.) the Romans had their own gods originally, they didnât just take the Greek ones and slap a new name on them. They merged a lot with their own preexisting deities alongside adopting worship of deities from other cultures as the Romans spread (and the Greeks also did this), and c.) the ancient Greeks and Romans did exist at the same time.
Like, we know in terms of the Greeks and Romans that if their godly parents are âequivalentâ then their demigod children are siblings, just like if Greek demigods have the âsameâ godly parent then they are also siblings. However, very few Greco-Roman gods are one-to-one, and a lot are like three gods in a trench coat, and then if you want to get into historical forms then you can start running into weird things like âWell, if you go back far enough, these two Greek gods may have originated from the same thing-â and also if weâre talking historical forms, again, the Greeks and Romans existed at the same time! Which means there would be historic forms of godly parents that are both Greek and Roman! So like, where do we go from there? Would Hazel be equally siblings to a child of Plutus as she is to Nico because both Hades and Plutus were conflated into Pluto? Orcus was also conflated with Pluto - does that mean when Nico killed Bryce Lawrence, he was killing his half-brother? (cause then that parallels just a couple chapters later when Will faces off against Octavian-) Are there demigods who, depending on their godly parentsâ form(s), are technically both a Greek and Roman demigod? If Hermes and Pan possibly originated from the same god, does that mean all the satyrs are siblings with the Hermes kids? If we want to get into all the nonsense of Dionysusâ origins and Zagreus and Hades, does that mean Nico is technically siblings with Dionysus kids? Does Dionysus joke about this during their therapy sessions? Are some demigods in certain cabins siblings with kids in other cabins but each othersâ siblings arenât siblings depending on what form their godly parents were in?
I have a headache now.
#pjo#riordanverse#percy jackson#chb#camp halfblood#camp half-blood#camp jupiter#analysis#meta#Percy gets tagged for the fun random analysis interjection#listen i think too much about the worldbuilding and how it relates to historical mythology RICK YOU BROUGHT THIS UPON YOURSELF-#i hear ''yeah the gods can appear in historical and regional forms'' and i am already writing stuff about it you cant stop me#listen. there were city-states where the MAIN PANTHEON WAS TOTALLY DIFFERENT#i wanna hear about demigods whose parents are from a *different pantheon format* and how confused they get by the CHB format#also the potential humor of two demigods going ''well technically im your sibling but you're not my sibling'' ''what'' ''nevermind''#also how does deities adopting demigods play into this. how confusing does Jason's family tree get#is it different depending on what form(s) specifically he was adopted by?#also also also - you could totally argue based on linguistics and stuff that Nico 100% never lied to the Romans#(at least about being Greek vs Roman) but that can be a post for another time

norway what was the bloodiest and most brutal battle you've ever been part of?
The battle of Lund in 1676.
The bloodiest battle Norway has been a part of is the Battle of Lund in 1676, fought between Denmark-Norway and the Netherlands against Sweden, where Sweden won. The Danish King had 12Â 300 soldiers to command and the Swedish King had only had 8Â 000. Both sides ended up loosing about 50% of their army. It is said to be the bloodiest battle ever fought in Scandinavia, and it was a coincidence that the Swedes won just due to the chaotic nature of the battle.
The battle was a result of Danish forces invading the southern part of todayâs Sweden, an area that had previously belonged to Denmark. The Swedes were led by a reckless and young king who had already put them through harsh conditions and bad camp locations that had cause a great percentage of the soldiers to die from illness already before the battle had begun. The Danes had followed the Swedish army and were in much better position, both location-wise and with a steady supply line.
The Danes became impatient and gave up good placement to attack the Swedes as they neared the city of Lund just outside Malmö. As mentioned, the battle was disorienting and chaotic, with a lot of breaks in formation, a missing Swedish King who came back after several hours to break through Danish lines who had his forces surrounded. Not to mention over-eager Swedes absolutely slaughtering sailors who wanted to surrender, with the words âSailors have paid to fight at sea, but not at land. You therefore deserve no mercy!â. The massacre was stopped by a Swedish officer.
#hetalia#historical hetalia#cw blood#aph norway#aph denmark#aph sweden#hws norway#hws sweden#hws denmark#thank you for the ask!! đ„°đ„°#finally historical asks don't feel like homework anymore and I had so much fun looking this up!#also fascinating how the wikipedia page for this battle differs so much between languages#the Danish page is basically empty#the Swedish page is the most extensive and thorough#the Norwegian page is almost as extensive as the Swedish - but includes Norwegians#the Swedish page just lumps both Danes and Norwegians under âDanishâ#the Norwegian page was also the only one who had included that Swedish quote from the massacre#it's so interesting how the different countries portrays these events!!

"The outer reaches of space remain unexplored by humankind to this day, but its greed is relentless. We grasp and yearn and hunger for knowledgeâ answers to questions we cry out into the endless void expecting to understand, expecting the stars to respond. The stars will not, but one day something else willâ and we will not like what it has to say." â Rome Solomon, Beyond the Exosphere (1965)

If there's one thing I've respectively noticed from Zionists and defenders of Israeli war crimes, it's that every source, argument and potential avenue to explore each explanation is riddled with cherry picking, moving the goalposts and mental gymnastics to explain why their conclusions, which typically are barely even related to the sources they use, somehow overshadow literal reality and what we see with our own eyes.
While scrolling, one example I came across was the repetitive misrepresentation of BLM, antifa and quotes from Martin Luther King Jr, as well as statistics, scholarly journal articles and government website information. These are all good sources, yet every single time they're mangled completely until the only possible "interpretation" of any of them is "well Israel is right to defend itself after shorting rockets beforehand because the retaliation was brutal and all Arabs are bad by default therefore". As if any of these sources are even about individual exceptions of Israel versus hatred towards Arabs.
I think what I find most absurd, as someone in the middle of their own studies, is how every bit of critical thinking and logic goes out the window as they do every single thing possible to do what professors worldwide say NOT to do when evaluating sources. It's like watching a race to see who can tangle and misconstrue scientific information to fit their world view the fastest. Then said people say "um actually I studied at university before so it's actually not wrong that I'm doing this exact this everyone is warned not to do because I have a permit". Ignorance I can forgive, but willful and arrogant manipulation? That's another thing entirely.
#zionism#my gods y'all need to get a grip and start remembering that confirmation bias exists#and y'all use sources continually in this way while just generally having so much bs of presenting How To Not Use My Own Sources#or actually to be more correct you clearly do know you just choose not to because you'd rather be justified in resource theft and profit#Like the while tome it's been about either material gain or feeling good about yourself while you shit on strangers#and then I also see y'all make other accounts ro harass random Arabs for fun and random queers who aren't even related like#the fuck is wrong with y'all go sit down and think about why you all do this pointless bs#it's such a waste of your own life spending it looking for fights to help with your bottomless insecurities#Israel#fuck israel#long live palestine#like you can say hamas was bad all you like it doesn't actually change the situation and what y'all have been doing for 76 years#and actually longer but y'all arent ready for that conversation and how Zionists butchered Jews and helped Nazi Germany historically#like sorry that Was a thing that happened and if you want to label yourselves as The Sacred Protectors of Jews then you have to face that#Pretending history didn't happen isn't helpful to anyone including yourselves y'all just making Zionism look even worse and like idiocy#I mean it is but you all aren't helping yourselves by being literal holocaust deniers#and being like âbut Zionists saved Jews afterwardsâ as if that somehow erases the fact they ALSO helped the Nazis#like history is full of contradictory bullshit so when you say âbut what about thisâ you know that doesn't erase the other things right??#âThat's worse. You DO see how that's worse right?â#I'm shaking you all and yelling this like it is WORSE that they killed Jews and then started playing the saviour and fellow victims#You do see how that is really bad for Jews today to be in a place created for political power plays and material gain through any means#like you see how that could be REALLY dangerous for Jews if they're that expendable to Zionist entities and the government#and you do realise that is literally what we are seeing from the actions of said government#and how they acting sadly very predictablely when you consider the historical contexts for its existence?#People who research this shit aren't surprised because it happens every single year and has been happening for centuries -#- before Israel the holocaust etc. It's been like this for as long as political Zionism and the French Revolution#It's been going on since pre Marxism and pre a lot of differing things but y'all pretend Zionists haven't ever harmed Jews ever when -#- there's a long history of internal conflict and in fighting that formed modern Zionism and plenty of internalised antisemetism within it#Yeah there's a genuine desire for return to the land (Not Own It just return and live peacefully)#but that is very very different to Political Zionism that formed as a socialist nationalist movement

What is your preference for how much modern day Cybertronians know about their planetâs distant past?
It varies from continuity to continuity, but I like a little mystery so we can discover it with them on screen or on the page
It also depends a lot on factors like how old the transformers we're dealing with are and if there's any mass memory shenanigans going on (looking at you, Aligned Quintesson War)
Extra points if there are historical misconceptions we get to see get dispelled
#like is it just me or does the fact that these guys are so long lived have a tendency to make their history seem shorter in comparison?#deliberate disinformation is alsp a topic we can apply here#certain powerful mecha maybe having a hand in spreading a different historical narrative than what actually occured#it's interesting to play around with#of course in a simpler series they're gonna wanna make things more straightforward#but i feel like there's a lot of fun to be had regarding how the story of Primus_ Unicron_ and the thirteen matches up to reality#transformers#maccadam#Quintessons#transformers aligned#transformers prime

Fun facts about crown prince rudolf đ„°đ
Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria was this super tragic figure whose super tragic life was always tragic and very sad. Also he was an irredeemably evil sexist jerkface and if you like him you're a pick me girl who wants WOMEN TO DIE,, anyway here are some fun facts about him!
He died in 1889 from suicide :( Or he may have been murdered by French agents sent by his friend Clemenceau,, listen I know they were friends who were aligned politically, but Empress Zita said this ~40 years after Rudolf's death, and because she's distantly related to him through marriage it must 100% be true!
He shot himself in the mouth, I don't know why all of these adaptations change it to be the temple lol
He infected his wife with syphilis >:o
According to his writings (mostly Eine Orientreise where he frequently admires the fresh manliness of his Arab hunting companions) he was heteroromantic polysexual <3 representation
He used to keep this creepy sex register where he used different colors of pens to mark what kind of woman he slept with (virgin, of noble birth, etc...). No trust me bro it's legit even though nobody has ever presented proof of this register existing anywhere or even a credible primary source citation to point to someone contemporary describing it
During his travels in Egypt and Palestine Rudolf acquired many cultural and historical artifacts for museums in Vienna as well as for his personal collections<3 Explorer king. Wait what do you mean imperialism, graverobbing and arson?? Noo I wouldn't describe it as such haha...
He was really sexist and that's not ok tbh :/ How can anyone be interested in him when he was horrible to women :( I mean it's kinda hard to find 19th century european men who would not have been and a lot of our still-revered statesmen had comparable attitudes that people let slide, but actually when it's someone that was also mentally ill in a Scary Violent Way it's ok to center his negative traits and ignore everything else about him haha. Also women are only allowed to enjoy researching and discussing historical figures who are unproblematic and good representation<3 ALSO women are not allowed to make arguments about historical figures being interesting or sympathetic based on their political views/positions if those figures were awful people in their personal lives, it's like the rules of feminism or something! ~~
He was involved in this crazy conspiracy to crown himself as king of Hungary. Also he was really hyped about hungarian nationalism and independence and totally wasn't an imperialist first and foremost who would've seen the ideology as ultimately destructive regardless of any personal fondness for Hungary
The italian anarchist Luigi Lucheni actually really wanted to fuck him and this was a motivating factor for Lucheni's assassination of empress Elisabeth in 1898 đł
[THIS POST IS SATIRE (inspired by) and the "facts" are purposeful misinformation kfkfkfkf. If anyone can provide actual proof of that sex register thing that does NOT come from greg king and penny wilson (derogatory) I will graciously not duel them in the hofburg parking lot xD I hate that this disclaimer needs to be included because it ruins the joke, but a lot of these are such common takes that I can't not]
#tw suicide#its like a fun game for finding the mistakes/differences between two images xD like we used to have on juice boxes in finland at least#idk what this is it started out funny and just became a thinly veiled rant aldlsödö maybe its unrebloggable#history#i'm so annoyed about the morality stuff though. like obviously there's lots of power involved in how we talk about historical events but i#dont think boiling a real life political figure down to one ickily conducted (on his part) relationship is right. especially since um. the#morality stuff and emphasis on rudolf's immorality is actually a political tactic with roots dating all the way back to febr/march 1889....#(to make him and by extension liberalism seem politically meaningless & frivolous & weak & immoral)#ANYWAY UM#akfkdlflfl that lucheni thing is based like 15% on actual fact. like there's a kernel of truth i've blown out of proportion#(lmk if you want to know more aoÄfpdod)#shitpost

Extremely rough indulgent clothing design concept stuff. Trying to make their pallets clash and find shapes. One oc and one kinda oc? Bloodthirsty freaks conversing about swords.
1600sish inspired fashion for an Italian vampire and Japanese yokai. They're both around 400 years old. Clothing suggestions appreciated.
#if u kno you know.. i shant say more#my art#my ocs#historical costuming#always a fun sitting down challenge to try and make clothes for them#i think the ren outfit turned out good this time.#it's funny because with other ocs i'll just design them whatever clothes without researching specific centuries but --#--but with ren it's like no i gotta know what century the different collars are from. when tights started to be paired with britches ect ec#but i'm fine with the annoyingness of coming out with outfits for him. since it's fun#searching for notsess was hard too.. i liked using dolls as refs but too many looked too close to edo period for me

my relationship with historical accuracy in OFMD is so fickle. im more than down to see Blackbeard's crew in full leathers, zips & hot topic belt headbands, but god forbid someone calls Stede's shirts silk
#completely takes me out of the moment#i guess its the difference between Fun historical inaccuracy and just. you did no research#you have to know the rules to break them kinda thing#aesthetics vs completely impractical#i guess the leather is also largely impractical but it also is visual. a silk vs linen shirt gives no difference its just wrong#and harder to look after. and less cooling.#nyxtalks#ofmd#our flag means death

#it sucks that it's so hard to tell the difference between#'thing you made sucks because you just made it and are too close to it'#and 'thing you made sucks because it sucks'#i think ideally for creating Good Product it's a good idea to sit on something for a while before posting it so youc an get some objectivit#however im also trying to defeat the perfectionist bug so it's really in my interest to post things that suck a bit maybe#it's also freeing to finish making something and then just toss it into the void. the absentee parenting of content creation#ill sit on this for a day or so while i figure out how to format it#but i think im falling back into the pattern of not wanting to post fic unless it's sufficiently polished#and that has never historically like... been good for me? some of my fondest works are things i just word vomited and threw out#so maybe i should just post this soon and hope and trust it's the first suck and not the second suck#but even if it does just suck. oh well. i had fun making it.#rookposting

Y'all are TRULY sleeping on Hyacinth by S.M. LaViolette. Like, I really enjoyed Phoebe (first book in the series), but Hyacinth is on another level. It features:
--a scarred libertine duke
--a neurodivergent heroine (23 to his 36) who happens to be KILLER at playing cards (in part because she's counting them) and sneaks out at night to play them while dressed as a very awkward young man
--a very casual interest in kink from her that makes him (a kinky man) go "O_O"
--a shockingly fabulous scene in which he tries to get her to admit she's a girl by taking her to a brothel, making her watch two people fuck while sitting beside him, and rattling off like 75 slang phrases for "jerking it" before being like "there's nothing WRONG with it bOY MEN MASTURBATE IN FRONT OF EACH OTHER ALLLL THE TIME" and starting to pull his dick out
--her: "AHHHH NO--YES? NO!"
--RIDING CROPS!
--so MUCH begging from this man, SO. MUCH. BEGGING.
--they're switches, your honor
--squirmy carriage BJs
#i think reading this close to phoebe has also given me some personal insight about my reading habits#and don't get me wrong i wholeheartedly approve of phoebe it's a 4.25/5 and it's so fun#but to get a book into what is feeling like unless something goes wrong in the homestretch 4.5-5 range#at least with historicals... i need a hook beyond a well-written virgin/marriage of convenience book#unless ofc it's truly exceptional (see: devil in winter) i want to see like... SOMETHING happening that gives it a distinct feeling#(i think is probs why that first elisa braden series while fun w some truly standout entriesgot tedious after a point for me#bc it was like... all virgin marriage of convenience books with different spins)#the detail and thought that went into how she wrote hyacinth and its plot is so good to me#romance novel blogging#anyway this is a delightful book would recommend
