I’ve been wondering what exactly about the World’s Finest story rubs me the wrong way this much. And now that it clicked, I feel kind of stupid for not seeing the glaringly obvious sooner.

CONNER.

The reason Boy Thunder irritates me so much is because Conner should have deserved this. Clark was so hands-off with Conner and always kind of kept him at an arm’s length, never truly taking him under his wing even though Conner should have been Clark’s sidekick, the way Wonder Girl was Wonder Woman’s and Robin was Batman’s.

And while it always bothered me, I also reasoned that Clark just had no real experience with super-powered kids, he was never really in a mentor-role. And we do see Clark gradually getting better with his interactions with Conner.

But now this stupid retcon pretends like no no years before Conner, Clark actually already had a sidekick once! A totally random kid that he just decides to take under his wing even though he has zero connections or obligations toward the kid. But because we’re unoriginal as fuck and just gave the kid the same backstory as Clark, he feels a ~connection~ to him and takes him on as his sidekick.

And it bugs me. It bugs me so, so much. Because why did he keep Conner at an arm’s length then and was so awkward about having a teen around who clearly needed his guidance and, quite frankly, also his love? He’s doing incredibly good with this random kid, I mean damn, a total natural at this whole taking-care-of-a-child thing. So where did all of this go when Conner came around then, huh?

Reading all of this, and being expected to accept that this is somehow now canon to the past of Clark, sours the early stages of Conner’s existence so much more for me, because I am shown a version of Clark who is just a total natural at taking on a sidekick and tending to his emotional state.
