#the fight for places 4-6 was fire tho

If you don’t mind telling me, can you tell me what you found wrong with act 2? I did think it was a little rushed but I still love it, I’m probably biased tho

yes!! i was debating on making a post about this so i'm glad you asked lol

just wanna say that this is not me saying that my opinions are right; i find it great that you loved the act and who knows if my opinions will change in the future anyways

i'm going to break my thoughts down by character and compare what happened to them in act 2 from where they left off in act 1 to help organize my thoughts

JINX

last we saw jinx in act 1 she had fought vi with the help of sevika and isha and lost her middle finger due to a shot fired by caitlyn. sevika released the air from the janna temple and kept jinx and isha covered while caitlyn and vi were separated from them. the strong wind causes piltover to be covered in these paint explosions which incites the people in the undercity to start riots in jinx's image

we start act 2 with jinx and isha doing sisterly things that she wished she got to do with vi when they were younger. we also see, with some conflictions, that she isn't interested in being a symbol for the undercity and doesn't seem to have much going on outside of that because her goal of "finishing what's left of her family" basically ended when she realized that vi still loves her during their fight. when isha and the other people from the rally are taken to stillwater, jinx breaks in, releases them and receives more love/praise from her supporters. here it can be strongly interpreted based on jinx's reaction that she was going to be accepting the role of being the symbol for the undercity and help lead the fight against piltover's rule. but after all of that, her reunion with isha is interrupted with the introduction of warwick/vander. then she spends the next two episodes trying to find and cure him with the help of vi and there no further development on her role in the rebellion, aside from the mural in episode 5 and her calling herself a hero because of the jailbreak.

i love that jinx was able have her family back again, it was my favorite part of act 2, but i found it strange that there was a lot of focus spent on jinx being the symbol for the undercity rebellion in episode 4 and how she was presented to be ready to step into that roll only for it to be almost forgotten about for the next 2 episodes. i don't know if the possible death of isha and warwick is going to be used as reasoning for get her to actually "join the cause" but if not then i don't understand why it was implemented into the show in the first place. my guess is that its going to be used just as a way for jinx to easily get people to fight in whatever battle is going to take place in act 3 since it seems like the noxians are already going to be attempted to be removed by caitlyn anyways since she betrayed them in episode 6

JAYCE

jayce ended episode 3 possibly entering ??? into the hex thingy after touching it and smashing it with his hammer (way to go dude!!) while he was with ekko and heimerdinger. we do not see him again until the end of episode 5 where he emerges from the hex looking like he had survived some crazy arcane apocalypse and experienced a shit-ton of trauma... after realizing how powerful viktor has become and killing salo, he makes his way over to viktor's cult base and kills him too before fleeing the scene lmao

i've already seen people joke about how it's no wonder jayce has haters because he just continues to fuck things up but this is the most interested i've been in his character since first watching the show. but i'm worried that were not going to get to see much of what happened to him while he was in the hex and that the show is either going to just have jayce tell us what he witnessed or use quick flashbacks instead. (and like... the show is named arcane because of the arcane magic and hextech is crucial for a lot of the story arcs so i would've anticipated that there would be more focus on that i guess??) though it isn't really fair for me to use this as criticism for act 2 since act 3 is not out, with only 3 episodes left and a lot of story to wrap up i feel like that is going to be the case

MEL

mel ends act 1 getting captured by the black rose and spends act 2... being captured by the black rose... i also really like mel and have enjoyed watching her character develop but i feel like her story is part of the show that has bitten off more than it can chew. i am not familiar with anything from league so the black rose stuff is very new to me and as much as it is interesting, it just doesn't feel necessary to have as part of the show. i think if it were introduced more in the first season then i would understand why it's a part of this one but it's being used as a storyline that is either put to the side or is getting ran through to get to the other stories arcs that need their own attention.

on a positive note, i am excited that the show is writing her as a character more than a piltover counselor and that we get to see what her tattoos, or is it armor??, are truly intended for

EKKO

so ekko also entered the hex with jayce??? i guess we don't know for sure since he didn't physically interact with it and i guess we still don't know now lol

i realllllyyy missed him in act 2 and his story is another one that i'm worried is going to be reduced to quick flashbacks or dialogue. my guess is when he returns from the hex, that is going to be the explanation for how he can manipulate time and he's going to use it at some point to help with the final battle

HEIMERDINGER

no complaints it was refreshing not seeing him ngl

AMBESSA

we finished act 1 with ambessa declaring martial law on the undercity and appointing caitlyn as commander with the intention of manipulating her and using piltover's recourses and weaponry for her own gain... and i would say that's basically what continues in act 2 for her as well

ambessa is a great antagonist and her motivations were set the moment we saw her in season 1: she wants control hextech and she wants her family to be safe. i don't think there was anything specific about her character or story that didn't fit for me because honestly everything with ambessa has been very consistent. i really look forward to her fight scenes in act 3

VIKTOR

viktor because jesus in act 1 and continues to be jesus in act 2 BUT a more powerful jesus... plus he has a cult

i just think he is another rushed storyline and that's pretty much the sum of it. it was wild watching him be able to enter people minds and float around in those celestial planes but i wish we got to see more about how he got to that point. when i think back to season 1, i liked how that season took time to show viktor's desperation with the hexcore and trying to find a cure for himself. it made me feel almost as desperate as him and i wanted him to be successful. watching act 2 didn't make me feel much of anything for his character and same goes for his death, although i'm sure that isn't going to be the last we see of him anyways

CAITLYN

we all know where caitlyn's arc finished in act 1 lol

i was really surprised that her first scene in act 2 was of her already showing doubts in how ambessa was running piltover because i think a lot of us expected her to do that much later in the act. i also wasn't a fan of how the show chose to have her character express these concerns with a couple scenes of dialogue rather than have us see her do something about it. if she were concerned that the noxians were being too violent with the people in the undercity, then show her trying to do something to stop it ! i feel like her scenes were either her saying she wasn't sure she was ok with being commander or it was her being like "i have to find jinx" and avenge my mother. so when she ran into vi in episode 6 and was somewhat casual about it, i was almost confused that there was nothing else to it... especially when the next thing we know is that she and vi devised a plan to stop ambessa from getting warwick??? it felt soooo random and i started laughing because it was practically ridiculous to me

i'm glad the act 3 trailer showed vi calling caitlyn out because there needs to be a discussion between the two of them over everything that happened. also it looked like it was taking place in caitlyn's house (mansion) and idk i think i just assumed that they wouldn't feel safe to go back to piltover after pissing ambessa off so maybe there's a reason for that?

saving my best girl for last cause i'm biased oopsie... uhh we also know how things went for vi in act 1

ugh this might just be me getting my expectations too high but i was really hoping we were going to see more with her pitfighting than just those first 2 minutes. if anything i would have liked some scenes with loris before he decided to leave after her drinking got too bad. and thats other thing... you have vi being presented as an alcoholic but she's totally fine the second jinx shows up?? as mentioned in cait's section, i don't love how their reunion scene went. i find it really difficult to believe that vi would have enough trust in cait right away to let her be brought to ambessa without any concerns that something could go wrong. but in general it feels like vi doesn't have much of an arc going on anyways... she started off working with cait to find jinx which didn't go well. then she's working with jinx to help vander which as far as we know could be dead. so now is she going back to working with cait to stop the noxians? it just seems like she doesn't have a solid motivation this season when it could have been something about her finding self-acceptance for all the guilt she's had over the years or idk making her lead the rebellion in the undercity, just something to make her feel like she has purpose.

and i'm going to stop here :) i think i got everything i wanted to say somewhere in here but either way i'm sure i get my point across just fine. i want to reiterate that i don't think i'm right about my opinions and also wanna say that i am enjoying the show, though it may not seem like it with this lol. i think act 3 will make me change my mind about a couple things anyways but this is how i feel currently and that's pretty much it

This world is a wasteland (where nothing can grow) - DQ Brothers & Law

I've been working on this since this poll, and the first chapter is almost finished! This is a DQ Brothers fic that focuses on Law and his new life with the Donquixote Family who happens to be the mafia. He gets adopted by Doflamingo (not because of the goodness of his heart, mind you!) and gets closer to Rosinante as they try to survive. I've planned to make it 9 chapters (and already drafted what'll happen at each one), too.

2. Fools & Clowns - Buggy/Mihawk

What the hell is Buggy supposed to do when he suddenly encounters the infamous Marine Killer - Dracule Mihawk - who also seems to decide to mess with a lowly pirate like him for some reason? (Or, Mihawk tries to flirt but Buggy thinks he is getting threatened, which causes a lot of frustrations to the swordsman.)

This is going to be a fun, silly little fic with lots of misunderstandings.

3. I love you anyway - DQ Brothers

Rosinante is a freeloader who lives off of his brother's back because of his inability to keep a job (he really tries but they keep firing him for some reason!) but Doflamingo loves him regardless. (Or, Doflamingo has attachment issues and makes it Rosinante's problem, even if he doesn't know it.)

4. Flesh, blood and all that other nonsense - DQ Brothers

When Doflamingo came to them with Homing's head, the Celestial Dragons decide to humor him and say that they would let only one of the brothers back in; the choice was his. What would Doflamingo do now?

5. Lovesick - Buggy/Shanks

For the first time in his life, which wasn't that long, mind you, Shanks had gotten to see an actual prince. He had blue hair that he had never seen before with a red nose to match. He was the cutest boy that he had ever seen! He knew then and there that he had to be friends with the other. (Or, a pirate boy and a young prince meet and fall in love, and decide to run away together. Roger and his crew was not included in the making of this plan, tho.)

6. Outrunning Fate - Buggy-centric

What if Buggy had been a slave before being rescued by Gol D. Roger and his crew?

7. Sickly Sweet - DQ Family (focusing on Homing's Wife)

The love of a mother is unconditional, which meant she would do anything to make sure that her boys were happy and safe, even if it meant giving herself up little by little. (Cakeverse AU)

8. No better version of me - Buggy & Shanks (Maybe even Crocodile??)

"What the hell?" Shanks mumbled in confusion. "What is wrong with your wanted poster, Buggy?" The other boy's bounty had been substantially increased to 1,000,000 Belli after their visit to an unkown little island had ended with them fighting with a marine ship and the writing had changed from 'Dead or Alive' to 'Only Alive' as well. Which was strange, considering that for the Marines any pirate was the best if they were dead. Even Roger and the others were flabbergasted with this sudden change! Buggy took the poster out of his hands, almost causing it to tear along the way and stared at it, looking just as pale. "….Oh shit." (Or, Buggy has a secret that he is dead set on to keep it hidden but life doesn't seem to follow his wishes as he is dragged back to a place that he hadn't thought that he would ever return.)

9. Just a bite, that's all - DQ Brothers & Law

I'm not going to spoil too much but this'll be a Zombie Apocalypse AU where DQ Brothers find a lost Law when trying to survive together (Rosinante is happy to see the kid but Doffy, well, not quite. He doesn't like to share.)

10. and now you'll see (that there's not much left of me)- DQ Brothers, Law

This is a Medical horror AU where Doflamingo forces Corazon to go under a *procedure* after his betrayal. He's angry at his brother but he'll be damned if he lets him go away from his side.

11. No idea who you are meant to be - Buggy-centric, Roger, Xebec

There's a rumour going around that Xebec is still alive and planning an attack. Roger and Garp meet once more to talk about this threat. Everyone in Oro Jackson is nerveous and all serious, but neither Buggy nor Shanks have any idea why or what is going on.

(You guys probably know the theories about Xebec, tho I was SHOCKED that there were no fics about it or with him and Buggy. That needs to change real soon!)

24, I've orphaned and deleted a couple of fics lol

106 303 and I'm very proud of every single one of those words, I usually have to fight my perfectionism to put anyhting on page

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Mostly DC comics! I have one (1) les mis fic and one (1) x-men fic

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Catalogue of Things Unsaid by far my most popular fic with 1000+ kudos, it's a Superbat fic. I love re-reading this fic, sometimes I like my writing in this and sometimes not but I'm still fond of it Bear Me No Witness my most popular Jaydick fic, I worked really hard on this one so I'm glad people liked it Lost And Never Found is a moody, horror-esque JayDick fic that really fits my style blow a kiss; fire a gun my first fic ever asdfghjk idk it's kinda silly False Alarm I wrote this mostly as practice, I don't really have anything to say about it

5. Do you respond to comments?

Yes!.. except on wips because I'm delusional and I keep telling myself I'll reply once I update the fic... lol

I don't think I have angsty endings? I don't remember most of my endings, it's my least favorite part of writing, oops

Yes! It was fun but I don't think I'm built for it, I like oneshots and my co-writer liked multi chapter stories hence why the only time I tried we didn't finish it lol

The way I can tell a story in 7k words or less, "short but packs a punch" is 100% my strenght. Also the fact that I really enjoy editing

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I love it in cases like les mis fandom. I get so excited when I see french especially in canon era fics. There are a lot of ways in which we can put the translation in the notes or using a skin I hate it tho, when I'm reading a fic and a latine character's only personality traits are that they are a criminal and they speak spanish BUT that doesn't mean I don't want more spanish speaking characters in fic even if they're just minor characters

19. First fandom you wrote for?

DC comics! I started writing and posting fic in 2019 and it's still the fandom that I write for today, attempts at branching out haven't been succesful

20. Favorite fic you've written?

Always the hardest question to answer but I really, really like re-reading Bear Me No Witness it has it all: Dick in a croptop, a news scandal, fake marriage and Jason messing with Dick to hurt Bruce I wish I could write a sequel!!!! (self call out)

Writing Fight Scenes Part 6 - Body Type

Depending on your character's body type, they are going to have very different fighting styles, and very different strengths/weaknesses. Body type can also have an impact on which type of martial arts a character excels in (see part one for a non-comprehensive list)

Really, there are two main considerations: weight and height. I'll write about the opposite ends of each spectrum and their strengths and weaknesses, as well as the things I've noticed whilst fighting each

(Please note, I'm breaking this down into very large boxes - most characters will exist in the in-between. As such, please take this with a grain of salt)

Weight

'Slim' characters:

Pros:

Slim characters have less weight to move around, so they tend to be faster

As such, these characters do better in drawn-out confrontations

Cons:

Because they don't weigh as much, they likely won't have as much power behind their hits. Remember, power comes more from weight than it does from strength! (see post number two for a more in-depth explanation)

Slimmer characters also don't have as much muscle and/or fat to 'pad' their body, so it is easier for them to be hurt

I never had much of a problem sparring with short slim people - I myself am 5' 4" and sometimes, it's just easier to fight fire with fire. Tall slim people were a different story - I found it difficult to get within my personal striking range. More on that in a minute

'Stocky' characters:

Pros:

Stocky characters have more powerful strikes

More muscle/fat -> more padding. Some heavier characters can actually injure their opponent simply by blocking their strikes!

Intimidation factor; anyone who knows what's good for them wouldn't pick a fight with someone who looks like they could beat their ass

Cons:

Carrying around more weight gets tiring - movement will be slower and endurance will be lower

Adding to above, these characters are easier to 'pick apart' - someone who is smart will throw lots of well-placed strikes to squishy spots in order to wear them down

I fucking hated sparring with beefy people omg. It didn't matter if they were tall or short, one good hit from them and I was checking my ribs for cracks (I never broke any but I had the wind knocked from my lungs Multiple Times). I also refused to throw certain strikes (i.e. roundhouse kicks) at some of my larger opponents because all they had to do was lift their knee, and I'd break my leg on theirs. The only good thing about sparring them was that I could generally dodge their strikes. When I couldn't...

Height

'Short' characters:

Pros:

Shorter characters have a lower center of gravity, which makes them more balanced/harder to knock over. This is way better than it sounds (more on this in the next post?)

Cons:

Short characters will have a much harder time landing hits because they have to actively step into their opponent's range (the danger zone) in order to have even a chance. This is way worse than it sounds (most of my worst sparring memories happened at the hands of tall mfs)

I don't think I sparred with anyone shorter than me by more that a couple of inches, excluding children. Yes, I sparred with children. There is one guy tho, he was short and stocky and he had the most devastating front kicks. Vomit-inducing. I broke his nose (sorry dude)

'Tall' characters:

Pros:

Longer reach! One decisive kick to the ribs from a tall character can stop lots of fights before they start. If you want to write a character who is a bitchass bully, make them tall. No I'm not mad (lie)

Cons:

More body to control will make it harder for a character to stay balanced

Tall characters are often, to some extent, slow; their strikes have a wide range, but they're very vulnerable as they pull their arm or leg back. A dashing, intelligent, good-looking short character can use this opportunity wisely

It was SO frustrating to spar tall people because they all knew how to bully me out of their range. I could either keep my distance and risk not being fast enough to dodge (bad) or trying to close the distance and running straight into one of their hits (worse)

3. If this oc could change anything about their life (or lack thereof), what would it be, and would you change that?

Well, he'd probably like to bring back his mentor. Or, at very least, accept it if he realizes he can't. But aside from that he probably knows that he's incapable of staying in one place for too long, even tho he tried it a few times. And yeah, he kinda moves with Destiny's seasonal content so it's convinient for me. Or well. He will return to moving with seasonal content when I return to sesonal content.

6. What was the inspiration for their story/ lore?

Well, a bunch of things - his backstory really evolved over time, as did his character. I really like Eliksnii, exo lore and guardians lore so these are the elements I used the most. And Master Ryba was created after I've listened to a really edgy song about mentor's death.

9. What is your favorite part of having this oc?

It's fun to imagine what your player character would say to what happens in seasonal content. Especially to go "He wouldn't be there, he wouldn't say that" every time. Also dressing him in little gay outfits, Also - drawing robots is fun.

4. How was this oc named? Is there any specific reason or meaning behind it?

Ok, so there is this book called "With fire and sword" which I like a lot and has a character who is named that. And I mean, he really sucks but also, his name sounds cool. It's kinda gender neutral also and all Ajidialian names are so it fits. It quite literally means "Asia" but in universe it has no meaning (beacause Asia doesn't exist) (unless I come up with some meaning in the language; I have quite a lot of it). And Zaavim is very vaguely based on one sylabe of my own surname. Also, it's read as Za-avim.

7. Have you made any alternate universes for this oc? if not, what kind of au would you make of them?

Ok, so to start - he, as my compleatly original character, is a sort of AU alredy - he was originally my NationStates leader but then I started to come up with compleatly original universe for him. Also his character changed a lot, so basically they only share a name now.

If I were to make an AU... Modern Earth/human AU, oblivously, if I wanted him to interact with other people's human OC wihout unpacking that he's not a human first. Apocalypse AU would be fun, tho he is very much a guy who would die first (depents of what genre tho I suppose). Or I could trap him in Groundhog Day AU. Or turn him into krasnoludek (borrower), he would make a fun krasonuldek. Honestly, he's kinda flexible.

9. What is your favorite part of having this oc?

One, putting him in cute outfits; two, imagining him splattered in blood; three, I also like imagining him happy with his husband. Sappy, I know, but that's me. I should draw them together one day.

ADL-17, Changyu. He used to work at a theatre in Kowloon and boarded the Nona Ouroboros to escape the "war" during the Golden Age Era. However, he was "restrained" and lost his memories as a result. After a certain incident, he fled from the Nona Ouroboros and became an escort for the Adiliek Trade Alliance.

In addition to Changyu's body being collectively equipped with both a young man's tenacity and keen and nimble reflexes, he could make use of his abilities in kung-fu to its fullest—his eye color would instantly change whenever he reaches the maximum output.

After he regained back the memories he had lost, Changyu frequently remembers the view of having meals together during his time working at the theatre. Even though he studied how to recreate the flavors through how he remembers them, he shared the food he cooked among the residents of the commoner train car because Structures don't need to consume food. Unfortunately, however, he gradually stopped cooking, seeing that the food culture of Kowloon isn't much accepted in the Azil. He may not talk about it frequently, but Changyu feels a bit regretful about it even now.

The copper coin Changyu owns is a "war trophy" from a certain military operation. Since it was originally a limited edition commemorative coin issued inside the Nona Ouroboros, the wealthy owned it in order to display both their identity and stature. It seems like Changyu frequently uses some kind of "trick" to acquire them. Although it isn't needed anymore, Changyu still brings it with him out of habit.

"We shouldn't abandon each other, no matter what. Whatever happens, I'll absolutely keep our promise." Changyu, who was born in Kowloon, has experienced farewell and betrayal countless times. Because of that, he doesn't easily give his trust to others. Although he promised to have a strong working partnership with the Commander, it was the first for Changyu to lighten his wariness and vowed to cooperate with them.

"The war has taken everything from me, that's why I'll do everything I can to protect you. I won't let anybody take what I hold dear ever again..." If one asks about Changyu's frantic reasons, it's because he doesn't want to turn against the trust and promise he had made. And one thing he thought of while answering was to sit around the dining table with the Commander and let them have a taste of Changyu's homemade food as if they were part of his family.

Rumors and Secrets

Secret 1 Even though his merit focuses on practicality, Changyu has a moral sense strong enough that he won't be led astray just by his self-interest alone—his definition of merits not just entails material things, he has also thought that kindness and relationships with other people are also valuable merits.

Secret 2 Calls people who are older than him "uncle" or "auntie"—rather than disrespecting them, Changyu calls them that out of respect towards people older than him. If they feel offended by what he called them, Changyu would immediately change what he'd call them.

Secret 3 Takes good care of things and is a frugal person. Because of his disposition, Changyu hates wealthy people who simply throw away things and refuses to make a deal with them. Jamila however, is different and even thinks of her as an exemplary merchant—it's because she'd make use of the merchandise to its full potential.

Secret 4 Structures cannot grow taller—Changyu seems to be very bothered by that fact.

Secret 5 While he is fundamentally a lazy person, Changyu will certainly finish the work he accepted.

Secret 6 He specializes in Kowloon's cuisine and likes to cook for other people. Though the food Changyu makes is delicious, most of how it's plated become visually off-putting because he hates spending too much time in the kitchen just for prepping and plating.

Secret 7 Has 48 places he calls his "secret hiding spot"—they're located at the gaps between each train car. All of the things he had collected are hidden in those said secret hiding spots in case something happens to Changyu.

Secret 8 He won't easily make a promise to others. Changyu would either refuse or would somehow dodge the topic if it's a promise he wouldn't want to make from the very beginning.

Secret 9 Changyu's dream was to become a hero just like the ones in theatre plays—the reason appears to be that he wanted to be strong enough to protect everyone he cares about.

Secret 10 He is well-versed in traditional games like Mahjong and such. In Mahjong, Changyu could differentiate each tile simply by touching it and has the skill to rearrange them in the way he likes.

Secret 11 He's familiar with many magic tricks used in performances aside from card tricks. He applies them on missions to outwit his opponents.

Secret 12 Changyu's tail not only allows him to grab things with it and regain his balance, but it can also serve as a weapon. He pretends to trip over, wraps his tail around his opponent's feet, and as he feigns an apology, Changyu shifts towards the counteroffensive. It appears nobody has yet to avoid it at first glance.

Card counting is a calculation method in Statistics used to increase the odds of knowing which card is currently on play.

「四功五法」is a collective term used in traditional Chinese theatres which encompasses the basic skills and techniques a classically-trained opera actor should have.

Cùn Jìn is a type of striking attack using your fist in both Kung Fu and Karate.

it’s sunday, and this this Sunday i posted ch 2 of moonlight! as such, i now have six fun facts!

1. most of these are ideas ive been sitting on since like, week-if-not-day one of lamplight, so im INCREDIBLY excited theyre Out There on the page officially. ren’s ascension to godhood, how he loses his body, how he gets it back

2. the monster fight was NOT in the og plan tho. but i needed a way for Ren to prove his godhood, and ive been idly thinking abt how Ren needs a reason for the neck scar in his design, so hey, monster fight!

3. in the original plan Ren had turned himself to stone, not fire, and the fire was more like an extension/expression of his will. figured it was easier to cut the middleman, but it’s why Ren gets his body back the way he does

4. there’s a bit of narration from the end which i wrote for a treebark week piece i never finished (or got very far in) lmao. everything from “A great many things frustrate Ren about his current form.” to “Of everything Ren misses—his hands, his face, his legs, his nose—the lack of a voice is the worst one.”

5. speaking of scenes i lifted from other places, there’s a scene some ppl might recognize as being from tumblr--the Ren pov scene from torchlight, which i did for a tumblr ask a bit ago. i def edited it a good bit to go into Moonlight, tho

6. i also had crystalline, the scar and grian lamplight fic, open for a section of this, and talked a bit w flowey for figuring out scar’s short part in here. the convo we had abt him was a lot of fun, and i made some big overhauls for what i had down for Scar already, all of which made the scene a bit more interesting to me as well as suiting the Ren scenes better

Footsteps of a Stranger

Written in 2019 to be part of an anthology that I don't think ever quite got off the ground. Spawned a good character, tho. Short story that I broke up into chunks for Tumblr. Inspired by the Noir Princesses art by Ástor Alexander.

Summary: A PI is on the case to discover who has been setting forest fires. A beginning investigation leads to more questions.

The smell of destruction still lingered, even days after the fire had been put out. The blackened heart of smoke had stained the trees, the nubs, the soil, and it seemed to cloud the very sky. Dragging my sickened stomach along, I stepped into the hollow husks and began to explore. The sprite in me twisted in turmoil as I walked, but I had to know. There was something here if that letter was right. Something I missed the first time.

I didn’t see it until I was well into the destruction. Bending down to inspect the forest floor, I spotted a different kind of broken limb; it looked human. Didn’t make sense; they had accounted for all the people in the area, dead and alive. So this was humanoid but not human. A quick examination revealed a bark-like texture along the skin, including small moss pieces grown from the skin itself. At least...that’s what it looked like under the burn marks.

So the ‘someone I recognized’ wasn’t a person. The letter was referring to a fellow earth sprite caught in the fire. Which shouldn’t have happened, as they are among the first to sense a threat to their forests and usually flee. Sprites are better at healing than fighting. I had to wonder why this one hadn’t had time for either.

Something clinked under my fingers−something metallic. Numbness shot up my fingers, and I jerked back, shaking my hand and peering at the spot. There was a metallic cuff wrapped around the wrist, scorch marks running up and down the broad sides of the cuff. I tapped it again with a curious finger with the same result.

I heard footsteps behind me and grabbed the arm, yanking the cuff free and stuffing it into my coat pocket. Just in time.

“Excuse me,” the tone was high-bred. British. Snobby. “I do believe this area is off limits.”

I stood and turned, taking in a white tailored business suit and shoes so clean they looked out of place. Something clinked as he moved, watching me with haughty superiority between his bushy eyebrows and a nose to rival an eagle’s beak.

“Excuse me,” I echoed his pretentious politeness, “but the forest is open to all.”

He smirked. “Not anymore. This land was bought by my company after the fire. We offered to handle all the restoration, and the city heartily agreed.”

“And what company is that?”

Instantly whipping out a card, he held it out. “Virginia Co.”

I took it with a glance. “And you’re what? The representative?”

“David Ratcliffe,” he answered with a sniff. “I own the company.”

My eyebrows went up. “The big boss, huh?”

“Yes. And you’re still standing on private property.” He held out a hand to direct me away, trying to both escort me and shoo me. I went with it, having no real reason to argue; the body hidden among this wreckage was a signpost of which trail to follow, and this Ratcliffe had given me footsteps in the mud.

“David Ratcliffe,” I repeated the name to Thomas while sorting through my files. “Apparent owner of Virginia Co.”

“Oh,” he said, the pages from our mysterious tipper spread out in front of him. “They’re the land sharks that set up shop a few years ago...an offshoot of a company overseas, I think. And they’re the ones trying to buy up local farms.” He tapped me on the shoulder with a pile of papers.

Company reports. “So,” I mused, thumbing through them, “they’ve been putting money into buying up the land right outside of the city, including any farms still in residence.” I glanced at the location of all the farms that had been vandalized or had the owners suddenly die off and back at the Company reports. They had made bids that were ultimately rejected by the same farms. Suspicious coincidence, of course, but not enough for the local police to be concerned about.

“So...they’ve been buying up land and possibly committing crimes against those that won’t sell,” Thomas mused, thumbnail pressed between his teeth. “But what about the forest fire? And the sprite you found?”

I had been wondering about it myself. According to their records, all the places that suffered from wildfires had been bought up by the Virginia Company years before. The news articles in my own stores all boasted the Company declaring land preservation with each purchase. I was always bothered with big money buying up the forests inhabited by earth sprites, but had little recourse; very few humans knew about the world behind the curtain, and had proven they’d rather remain ignorant than admit they were at fault for a population’s decline. Both sides of my heritage were proof enough.

Regardless, it made little sense why they’d start setting fires on land they owned.

I shifted my seat and felt something shift in one of my pockets: the cuff I found. I turned my pocket inside out and let it clatter to the ground, catching Thomas’s interest. He picked it up and began turning it over in his hands, glancing up at me with eyebrows raised.

“What’s this?”

“Not sure; found it attached to the dead sprite. I think it might be the reason why it was dead.” Thomas dropped it with a startled look, and I shook my head. “No, not poison. I think it’s iron.”

“Iron? How can you tell?

“It blocks magic,” I explained, nudging it with a finger. Cold spread through the tip of my index up to my knuckle. “I’m not affected as badly, but it still gives me a chill the way no other metal does.”

“So someone put this on the sprite, and...it died?”

I shook my head. “No, but it kept the sprite from healing the forest. Probably kept it from healing itself after it was caught in the fire.”

“Which means whoever started the fire knows about sprites and how to stop them.” He said exactly what I had been thinking, which put a different spin on this whole case.

Hi there, first I want to say i came in peace. you are probably new to tumblr. There are different quirks on different sites. Like on Reddit, if you go to the Sherlock subreddit, you can rant about anything as long as your language is not bad.

On tumblr tho it’s different (obviously bad language is not welcome anywhere), because tumblr has a filter function. You can block any tags/blogs you think boring or hate, so as a result, not liking a ship is not a valid reason here to question it. 99% of time if a blog has an obvious ship or really, any topic, and you question it, it’s automatically considered as harassment and you’ll get blocked even if you use good language.

Especially if a blog tags its post with the ship/topic and you still question it, they’ll yell ‘I tagged my posts! Why are you here!’ and people will support it becasue that's how it works here. Some blogs will have a pinned DNI (do not interact) people/topics, but one can figure out the blog theme easily even if there’s no DNI. You may come across people saying ‘you need to curate your own experience on tumbler’ that’s what they mean.

As for the sideblog thing, yeah, something terrible happened in march and it lasted like two months(? My mind blacked it out). The blogs were a literal war zone. You are sooo, soooo lucky you were not here, I seriously mean it!!! Sooo lucky! It was very stressful to go through. There was almost no roleplay going on during that time because mods were busy fighting off those bad guys. All of them have 4 to 6 sideblogs. That’s why people have freaked out this time around. It was brutal time in march! ah, shudders.

That mass bullying started 6-7 months ago but if you count from when it mainly ended, it was probably only 3-4 months ago. You can ask the mods for details. I don’t think it’s my place to tell you more, because mods may not want to talk about it. they deleted all the posts about that mass bullying but you can ask them if you are skeptical of what I said. I see the mods are really patient with you so I think they’ll answer. Last week I told the mods that I kicked my cousin off my sideblog last xmas because she wanted to stir up drama. You can verify this with the mods too.

Just a few "nitpicks" i wanted to share: 1) first of all, really matt? K-pop in the freaking second to last episode of the whole show?? In the final battle with Andrias??? Look i like k-pop but it was Soo out of place 2) Marcy and Sasha's calamity forms look bad imo. Marcy looks boring and way too similar to Anne, and Sasha looks like she's trying too hard to be cool and edgy with all those spikes (tho her ponytail being on fire IS cool) 3) i wish we had gotten to know the olms the same way we got to know the other amphibia races, they looked so cool but were just kinda there 4) the way Marmar and sash got their calamity powers felt so cheap it just sorta happened 5) i don't necessarily mind the idea of the gems having a self destruction spell but i wish the show didn't pull it out of it's ass in the very last episode. Tho now that I'm thinking about it, why would the cat god make a self destruction spell for the gems? 6) "the prophecy is more of a request for help than anything" THEN WHY CALL IT A PROPHECY?? in fact where did they even get the prophecy? How did mother olm know about the spell?

Honestly, I never understood the K-POP thing. Like....was it really needed?? It kinda cuts any tension that scene could have had....in favor of saying they managed to get the rights to use a BLACK/PINK song. Like, well done for getting the rights??? But don't get the need for the scene beyond a joke about K-POP really.

The way the calamity trio forms all together being done was just....meh??? They obviously had to do the forms after foreshadowing all three can do this in Mother Olm episode, but like, all the theories about Sasha getting hers via something happening to Grime or Marcy getting hers via fighting back against the Core...kinda just became nothing, and the only detailed one out of the three seemed to be Sasha's, while Marcy's couldn't even maybe resemble an adventurer outfit maybe and Anne's was just a upgraded form of the one we kept seeing throughout the show.

Honestly, an episode with the Olm's wouldn't have been bad really....but you know....we really needed that episode I guess with Sprig and Ivy being that annoying couple we all hate to be around.

"Why would the cat god put a self destruction in the gems?" Because we needed a half-assed way to split up the found family. Like, they really made the cat god confusing as hell for a character that was really only in the finale.

Honestly, I feel like they wanted to do a prophecy....but also didn't know how to execute said prophecy in the finale, so now they just say it was more of a call for help for some reason, making it confusing why its called a prophecy then.
